Well most of the usual topics have been covered so this is pretty much how it’s going to be all week. Until BG/SoR finally admit they secretly love each other and stop this charade of being mortal enemies, thread will always be like this. No-stealth Thief saying hi! I’ll challenge you to make a thief and see how EZ mode it is… The most squishy class in the game – by far. We are a profession designed for one thing – eliminating our enemy, and that fast.

Oooh little off topic, but what you running? Shadowstepping is amazing though I haven’t clocked many hours yet in W3 and leveled with P/P – SBow cos I was lazy. Thief isn’t so called ‘EZ mode’ unless you perma rely on near perma stealth Kinda knew before I finally made thief, but experiencing firsthand just reaffirmed it. It’s these thieves giving the class bad rep.

Thiefs/Ele's more survivability than guards?

Ele: If a D/D doesn’t seem to be taking a lot of damage, they’re not dealing that much damage. Time interrupts on our heals and dodge major abilities to make us useless. If more bursty.. not survivable if we make a mistake from exp anyway. Bunker isn’t as good as it used to be.

Thief: Stealth. Try and kill before stealth, expect the usual combos and if you can’t win or sick of them trolling you, run since you’re wasting your time. Actually… most cases don’t fight at all Proper thieves who don’t near perma stealth are hard to find

Guardian: Very tanky with good damage if specced right, one of the more survivable in generic circumstances right now. They’re in a good spot and fun to fight! Not sure what happened in last patch to bring ‘battle guardians’ out of hiding but whatever it was it’s awesome!

Take a break for awhile and when this matchup topic/s finally stop being BG vs SoR, all this new drama starts up. Hope all the major W3 guilds can work this all out since JQ can’t follow the trend of slowly breaking under stress.

Seems like all servers need to be split over three groups next matchup to get a break and change of scenery. Also tiers don’t exist so stop calling them that >:(

I mean we are lookin for small mans vs small mans. Have literally zero or maybe even negative interest in ppt or Zerging or meta. So if those two servers have groups that don’t run 5/6…. Like i asked its basically pointless right? Cuz a few people have said coming to jq will present us with server matchups against good small man action (along with 60-80 mans which well just flat out avoid)… Trying to find a place to xfer our 5 man to see if any small man action exists before we quit the game entirely.

Bit late with reply but try out Eredon Terrace. They have guaranteed small fights and any new players will really help them out especially if you’re able to help develop new strategies. Chatted with a few and sounds like they have a W3 experience all of us can only dream off whislt punching well above their weight.

I am not quite getting your example, so yeah the opposing player manages to blind/evade/block your stealth attack at the right moments, which is hard to time because he can’t even see you. And by doing that he forces you to be Revealed. You would have been revealed had your attack succeeded anyway. The ONLY difference in this scenario is that the opposing player has managed to avoid taking damage from your extremely powerful ability by using a defensive skill/ability at the right time. This is how it works for every other profession’s skills. And being revealed does not prevent you from using all your utilities/steal/weapon skills/elites/heal, you just cant go into stealth for 3 seconds, thats all, that is the shortest cool down of any ability.

A thief becomes Revealed during combat anyway, all the time. Except with this change, it makes it so that your stealth attack is not a guarantee, you don’t get to spam through dodge/block/aegis/blind while remaining invisible and just land your stealth attack anyway. If you somehow think that this change would be unfair to thieves then I am not sure what I can tell except to try other professions for a change so you can see how it works from more than one point of view.

From earlier in case you missed:

Coming from an ele (mesmer secondary and just finished up with S/D, D/P or Sbow Thief),

If i see a thief stealth in the distance, I assume basilik/backstab variant opening, so wait till I think they’re near, then dodge into knockback/stun since I open with defensive Air. Not perfect but can help survive initial burst when i get it right. Like I said, the non usage of abilities was a massive unrealistic hyperbole, but only thing I could thing of to compare against though I could’ve come up with something a bit better in hindsight. Difference between hitting->revealed compared with missing-> revealed depending on what stealth ability was used causes revealed to trigger anything from 1-5 seconds earlier. Can’t remember exactly the max single stealth chain you can get traited so max is probably wrong though SR is 3 duration into 5 sec stealth. That tiny amount of time could be the difference between surviving or becoming downed hence allowing too much to trigger revealed possibly hurting the class.

Probably over-thinking about this as a hater of permastealth and my refusal to rely on stealth since I decided to make a thief eventually after a few months from launch whilst not affecting all other playstyles/weapons. Really need thief mains (and NOT the near perma stealth troll players) to weigh in on what you just said since they have way more thief credibility than me Honestly couldn’t care less just as long as it ONLY affects heavy stealth abusers. Do have a point though so assuming you either majority play a thief or know everything about thieves.. which is more than me and think I’m starting to confuse myself as well now.

In short, agree with Blocked triggering revealed, but a little weary about misses triggering revealed if it affects other builds or the class a lot. No more long replies too to save scrolling since I think I’ve covered everything!

Dodge at the right time = evade = 100% ability/attack missing so it is the single most effective tool to counter most damaging abilities, so it’s the reward for good play and thief shouldn’t be punished apart from usual initiative loss. Blinds already got changed so you can’t just swing wildly to get rid of it and based on the fact it’s a relatively common condition for all classes in some way so kind of unfair to also proc ‘Revealed’. Going to need experienced thieves thoughts on the blind issue.

Imagine for every other class, that missing an ability, no matter how, incurs an immediate 4 second CD on ALL abilities. Yes, it’s a hyperbole but the idea is that baisng ‘revealed’ on missing means you cannot miss a single ability from stealth , ever and there’s 0 counterplay to combat the humble dodge. Imagine this scenario for a thief going to sneak up onto a class. Person dodges initial thief stealth attack (3/4 sec reveal), thief stealth, tries again, person uses blind (3/4 sec reveal), whilst following times can be invulnerability, dodge, evades, blinds or simply being out of range. Didn’t include aegis since that’s what topic is about so basing replies if aegis did already proc ‘revealed’. Sure it would weaken permastealth which I would love, but for thieves who don’t rely on stealth attacking as much would be hit hard for no reason at all.

Kinda unfair IMO, hence Aegis proccing ‘revealed’ is a very subtle change that won’t affect the thief class as a whole but make a big impact in the right situations.

I think what a lot of non-thief players are forgetting is that if the target is moving you’ll likely only get 2 attempts at backstab before stealth runs out anyway, an that’s if you’re lucky.

*And in regards to Aegis, that shouldn’t reveal because then every guardian regardless of build would have a straight-up counter to the first backstab. *As for other blocks, they generally last as long as stealth does anyway so it doesn’t really matter whether they cause revealed or not because it’ll be the same result either way.

Pop Aegis before leading into the backstab combo. Is it really that hard to actually have to think before going into fights and calculating the situation? Every class has some well known opening/defense all of which can be countered. At least with a guardian you know exactly at least one thing they’ll have

Didn’t really bother reading through all the posts from thieves trying to justify this mechanic.
I completely agree that thieves should be revealed when blocked or miss an attack from stealth.

Not missed since that would destroy the class, just blocked triggering reveal.

It would hit the thief class far harder than the revealed change did. There are already ways to counter them from entering stealth from C&D and the BP/HS combo. It would do nothing to stop permastealth, it would only encourage people to stay in stealth longer to wait until the block ended.

Not stuns, evades, glancing, plain swinging in the air or anything, just blocks. Think about this way with the Ele RTL change. 40sec if you hit nothing, 20sec if you do from the previous flat 20sec. Kinda annoying but just means we have to make sure we use RTL wisely. Back to thief, attacking from stealth into a block would do the same, albeit in a much smaller way since it would just use up initiative and trigger revealed, not ‘remove’ the main X/D gap skill for an extra 20sec. That small 3 or 4 second revealed can completely change the flow of the fight. Shouldn’t be permastealthing in the first place so this change would only affect those people, not the good thieves out there

Fine with me. Would make landing those back stabs much more satisfying knowing that there was a risk of being revealed if I don’t get my timing correct. I’m up for anything that makes stealth more interesting.

Be careful what you wish for…unless you want Tier 2

There are no more tiers so nothing to worry about since that era is gone. Groups are.just that so order of groups is simply to continue the old trend and not confuse people. Still think this is the best matchup for us three… Only one way to find out if we don’t break the randomiser again.

I think the point is to show that outside the whole personal story and Tyria in general, my understanding is that the Living Story shows there’s more happening than ‘saving the world from eternal doom’, like politics, shopping and trade agreements. It sounds un-fantasy like on the surface but if you think about, take away the dragon presence and it’s just a world with all the boring real life stuff.

Though F&F signals another sub plot going on I think in the background which we’ll go back to soon. Still no idea who the ‘person from our past’ is.

Chatted with some ET’rs whilst guesting and envy their W3 situation. Punch well above their weight, have an amazing core group and probably have better tactics than most other servers. Just compare to the EU situation. ET and other lower tier teams can be enticing since you wouldn’t become just another screen name amongst the masses where NPC’s hold more representation and possibly become good friends with the smaller group of players compared to larger servers.

They didn’t seem to care about winning or losing on the scoreboard, but more about having good tactical fights, never giving up, not being pushovers and most importantly, having fun!. Should stick them and you might become a better player overall. Can guest servers for PvE anyway if needed.

goodnight JQ. have a good week

Ask you crew which played over the the past 12 hours just how long it took them to take Redlake on your BL. Guild OWNED it for about six hours. We held off your countless attacks, the odd BG attack, then a double team. JQ took fights all over the map, yet always kept the tower under JQ control and made sure Lowlands and yaks were safe. We managed to get all upgrades but one complete and it took commanders calling it a night/day, and having maybe 10 people in the map with about four in the final defense to take it back for yourselves , whilst we were outmanned most of the night anyway. Even got hold of and held Hills for quite a long time as well.

Considering the only reason you took your map back was because you finally figured out you need a golem and about 40+ people zerging the map inan anti clockwise formation after six-ish hours is nothing to be proud about. Triple digit badges (103 to be exact), few hundred kills, five ranks and a few rares + usual at the loss of not sleeping and pulling an allnighter was worth every single second. You can have your BL back, but what we experienced overnight is something you’ll never understand.

@ the whole JQ crew who were on, commanders and all the havoc/scouts, thanks for giving me and the others what is possibly our single greatest experience in GW2 ever. Best coordination I’ve seen.

@BG: you made for some awesome fights to watch vs SoR and when you lost Bay, we knew Redlake was their next target. Held Briar for hours as well so good job!

@ the SoR who refused the party invite, I just wanted to congratulate you guys on finally taking Redlake since it was an amazing battle of attrition, which you eventually won, though you had way more losses than our side ^^

Don’t mess with the plush griffon and JQ when we’re at our most determined.

[How To] FIX WvW Thief Stealth

Perma tealth or majority stealth is a problem. Distribute power from the Shadow Arts traitline to make others more attractive is a good start. Sucks how all condition removal/defends is in this line at no offensive loss whatsoever, in fact actually promotes constant stealth to gain power. Hopefully a shuffle happens so you’re not deliberately torturing yourself by going 0 SA.

Maps are awesome when no blob/zergs are around since there’s no lag whatsoever. Envy other matchups since they get this most of the time.

Now I humbly request SoR and BG to stop dropping spikes/salvage stuff and start dropping badges so I can upgrade my weapons. NPC’s are dropping more than both of you combined, at least for me

Really? Black Jade is literally just that, which if memory is right in ancient and current cultures is used to ward off bad emotions or something. Got given a necklace of one as a gift a few years back. Just clicked on alternate ‘meanings’… maybe ‘Jade Gate of Rall’ is better. Yep, sticking with that.

Back to chilling and hopefully this lag/dc business stops soon for you all!

General Discussion: Thief 2nd place (worst)

Finished my thief finally so just gotta kit out with my build (SD/DP and won’t rely on stealth as a control tool like all these annoying perma stealthers. ).

Levelled mostly with shortbow PP cos everything single target = getting blown up if more than one enemy which was a little annoying after main ele, then mesmer. The problem with W3 is the frequency you can stealth being annoying. Even worse that once a thief starts, they’ll just keep pestering you. That’s the problem I have… Not thieves being able to burst. Thieves just become a thorn in your side which never goes away, and cos of constant stealth, makes it annoying running from what is essentially your own shadow. At least with other classes you can see your stalker (mesmer built certain way not as much though rare)

The #2 SB nerf makes no sense though since it’s the only proper AOE skill. Should have a PvE/PvP split so thief in PvE can be more fun! Thief in PvE seriously needs some love.

Do you even enjoy W3 anymore? Seems you just hate each other when the other is ahead of you. Both have more coverage than us but don’t see as many of our forum warriors complaining. Should turn this friction into one of those cheesy drama shows where you have this love-hate thing going on but can’t accept the truth!

Also BG….. Where’s Frudoo/Drufoo these days? Best troll ever since he sparked discussions, not pointless arguments.

On a side note, why would we all stay on this server together if we disliked everybody on it?

I know your secret. You’re subconsciously implanting your philosophy into all BG’rs mind so over time you all become a big happy server…. Somehow you’re able to spread this to your opponents through these so called ‘hugs’ as well thus creating a super tri server guild of [LOVE]!

I’m onto you and won’t fall for it since I got this cool tinfoil hat in the mail though might need a new one since his one has a hole in it.

:( This thread was going so well.. Must be a new record at 10.5 pages! All I know from exp is being part of the JQ militia is nothing but fun since no matter the score, map, or numbers, there’s always people taking objectives somewhere rather than give up at the slightest hurdle.

Anyway early congrats to whoever wins since anything could happen on the final day, wait to see what the randomiser decides to do with our dysfunctional family and hope matches remain pretty balanced!

Finally finished the puzzle and got the achievement after over an hour of failing and fighting. Also a shoutout to the MERC Thief in the lantern room for cheering everyone on, and watching over the plush griffons

According to the QQ, our OP active defense is getting downed in range of portal/door in W3 so we can Vapour Form to safety which just happens to be ALL W3 is about apparently =="

Fine with the way things are since it ‘forces’ you to become a better player not relying on readily available buttons to defend yourself which is why we’re considered OP all the time. We have to put in a lot of effort (and dodging) to survive and people don’t like that

Edit: in other words, we have a lot of passive and player active defense and not many ‘press a single a button’ actives so that’s where our strength lies.

From ele main, you get used to the constant nerfs and such over time. If ele pattern is anything to go by, shatter will be nerfed (as phantasm just got hit harshly outside PvE) then the less common weapon (torch) will get some nice buff opening S/T to be more popular as ele S/D and staff got huge buffs.

Luckily I stayed away from pure shatter for W3 cos had a feeling it’d get needed constantly. Hopefully it’s left alone though cos shatter mesmers are awesome to fight with and against!

Other class downstate is useful in all aspects of W3 except getting through doors. Our downstate is ONLY useful for getting through doors or frantically trying to get further back into a group (thieves and warriors can but not as easily whilst mesmer is random). Any thing thing else is just to troll enemies into a fail stomp or buy time hoping you res somehow. So because of one gimmick which can be used on the brink of death, the class must be destroyed since it would also affect PvE.

Guess we’re not allowed to be able to do a gimmick when downed near a door/portal as well as no damage

Don’t worry, the massive Hammer-NERF is coming to Thieves on the 25th and I will surely be making the most OP class in the game: Guardian.

June 25, 2013 — Thieves will be the least played class due to the mass nerf it is getting.

Not sure if being sarcastic or not.. If not, you’re overreacting I think. Doesn’t look THAT bad… still doesn’t address cheese perma stealth but with my basic understanding, is a buff to thieves who rely less on stealth as a ‘get out of jail free’ card and more of a tool to their arsenal. Could be horribly wrong though

Levelling mine with P/P and SBow focusing on condition cos I’m lazy so no stealth at all. I’ll theory a proper build when closer to 80 though so my opinion is from this. Changing regen rates would hurt the Sbow utility too much I feel, though the only issue I have is frequency of stealth. If you’re fighting an opponent you don’t see for what seems to be 3/4 of the fight, something’s a little off.

No idea how to ‘fix’ this since no firsthand PvP experience with the class yet, but lowering the frequency seems to be the safest way to solve problems at first without affecting team oriented builds.

I don’t bother fighting thieves since I know I I don’t burst them immedietely, then’ll jsut stealth, hang around, get annoying and slowly wear me down both because they have more DoT (as they can constantly see you) and I jsut get frustrated and mess up. If a thief comes up and I see them stealth, I wait about two seconds, spin around by moving mouse side to side, dodge then whatever, just to mess with them…. then i proceed to run away

Thieves aren’t OP at all, just extremely annoying that a single cheese tactic seems to be the staple style of most thieves in W3. Not going to be a cheese thief so I’ll actually be useful and play the role thieves should be doing rather than wimping out when you see more than two people.

I think it was broxigar that thought of it. We should have multiple people from different servers keep count. Then, at the end of each match up we compare notes and take the average in an attempt to remove personal bias.

Some are hard to figure out which server though…. Still makes the thread more interesting. Could even add more categories or something.

Reset was so fun to play with nonstop action everywhere on EB earlier. This dysfunctional family matchup is destiny since it seems hard to truly split us up

What they mean is for every even # fractal above (and including) level 10, when you get the bonus Jade Maw, you get a pristine relic in the chest.

Thing is you only get one per day between level 10-18, 20-28, 30-38, 40-48 and beyond.

This matchup forum is never gonna get old! Makes for good reading. About the supposed 2v1 , do you really think we (JQ) are going to ignore BG after last week?Congrats on the win and the margin but seems the main W3’rs always are out for revenge so everyone should be used to it by now. That or they plan to always hit the #1 server. All I know is our commanders(pin or not) always have a reason to attack whatever so it’s always about putting the server in the best position possible. Less time whining, more time playing BG forum warriors! You make your server look kinda bad.

Anyway if the guardian I fought from IRON (ele with the tentacle backpiece) and lost to before getting swamped near briar on JQBL the other day is reading, got a speargun fractal skin so guess you gave me some luck

Whenever I read about losing to RNG, I can’t help but laugh. No event so far comes close to the odds of getting an event box/chest simply by playing the game! If you want to farm it out, go ahead whislt the rest of us carry on doing whatever and hoping we get lucky.

Anyway some people can spend their whole lives buying lotto tickets and never win, whilst someone buys one and wins the jackpot. RANDOM = RANDOM, not to mention the ‘jackpot’ is simply cosmetic. If it was game changing then RNG would be a problem though which has not and hopefully will not ever happen. Just be happy you don’t need to go out of your usual play style to get the biggest chance of event items (chests)

Little worried now… Always looking for event bargains(selling the dragon coffers early when they were 10-13s when event went live knowing they’d go down) and thought this was another new thing. Didn’t ring any bells immediately after first and only attempt (4 or 5 forges when they were 1.8g), then kinda made no sense after checking pet price history, then realised it was Wintersday all over again, but worse.

Pulled all my orders and really worried now. Made a big loss on it so hopefully I don’t get in any trouble from this. Should’ve followed the saying “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is” and stick to normal trading

To those who did it way more times, they should get the appropriate justice though.
