Mace/focus is best. It gives the most damage doing hammer mace rotations if you have writ of persistence on which you should. It also gives you 2 blocks and 1 blind. GS is good as well if you need trash pulls from binding blades. If you need no pull then mace. Still your not a tank and shouldn’t try to be one. Use your aegis and blocks instead to tank hits and other utilities to negate damage.

Like others have said you should have seperate setups for each mode. For pve, meditations are bad and valor stops being worthwhile at 2 for retributive armor. The rest of the suggestions are strictly for pve.

The most well rounded build would be 45005. It has all the support you should need which would be blind/vul spam, master of consecrations, absolute resolution, and indomitable courage.

Utilities should be retreat (90% of the time on bar), wall of reflection if there are projectiles, and purging flames when there are conditions or if you need a fire field. That is a well rounded utility bar in general. If you need a lot of projectile defense (fractals) shield of the avenger + wall, if you need stability then stand your ground or hallowed ground, and if you don’t need support and have a free slot then bane. Your heal and elite are the best choices.

For gear I’d suggest at least working on a set of berserker armor or trinkets to mix in with your soldiers. You really shouldn’t need that much survival stats for pve and it can be better spent on dps which is what mostly matters for pve. Ruby orbs are terrible since the ferocity update. Scholar runes are best but flame legion runes are a good cheap choice and the next best thing.

We looked at camping each weapon using optimal setups to camp the weapon. GS + sword/focus rotations do the most dps ignoring pure scepter. GS2 does more dps than sword. It does even more if you stand in a target’kittenbox and hit all 14×. Symbol is a dps gain so it should be in the calc. Binding blades is also a gain. This is due to the condition it applies. It also will hit one target with all the blades meant targets around it if you stand in the hitbox which is nice for bosses with adds like alphard. It wasn’t considered as multiple hits for our calcs though since that is very situational.

Mace or hammer in fractal ? DPS meta guardian

If you can survive fine just run GS + mace/focus instead and do rotations. Running 45005 for everything should be fine. Mace is good for fractal over sword because cleaving is a pain for some of the content and the extra block is really nice to have for bosses. If you run hammer then mace should be on swap unless you need the pull from binding blades. Hammer and mace/rotations are top dps for hammer builds since they both benefit from writ. I’d only bother with hammer if your having a rough time or you’re in a bad group that is having a rough time and doesn’t like to stack might.

DPS rune guardian(PVE): Scholar vs Strength?

in Guardian

Posted by: obal.3218

obal.3218

Scholar is best. Flame legion would be the best alternative to scholar for guardian. Flame legion have the same stats as strength and 2% more damage multiplier on it’s conditional buff. Assuming you have permanent burning then it would be equal to around 60% scholar uptime. Strenth would be less. If your completely solo you won’t always have might on unless you run strength sigils on every swap and there are better choices.

PVE Empowering might build

in Guardian

Posted by: obal.3218

obal.3218

You could just use flame legion runes which are cheap. They are equal to 60% scholar uptime assuming perma burning.

You can better spend that 3rd point in virtues to get 1h strength instead.

EM costs 4 trait points which is a lot to invest that could go to damage multipliers and dps stats. It has an internal cooldown and doesn’t last long so you can stack much might like ps war can. Also if you’re in a group that does stack might your might stacks will overwrite ones that last a lot long which will just hinder the group. If you’re pugging your given up a big chunk of your dps which is probably better spent on you then a couple might stacks to a bearbow.

Does hammer dps works?

in Guardian

Posted by: obal.3218

obal.3218

It’s viable but not optimal. It generally lets people take an extra hit and avoid some one shot attacks. The constant light field makes it difficult to stack might mid fight so it will annoy eles and such in an organized group. People don’t might stack much in pugs so it’s not as much of an issue there. It does comparable damage to gs + 1h/focus builds on paper but interrupting hammer chains tanks your damage. Here is a dps comparison across an overwhelming number of builds, weapons sets, and rotations.

PvE Guardian reboot advice

in Guardian

obal.3218

DPS builds go after the best support the class offers and puts the rest to damage. The builds in the sticky vary between the amount of support you will need. Going 45005 in general would be all the support you should ever need and gets you near max damage output while doing it. Damage is also a form of support!

Guardian is all about passive support to negate damage with blinds, aegis, projectile defense, stability and condi removal when needed. The main support you would want is renewed justice, master of consecrations, and absolute resolution/indomitable courage based on the need along with the right utilities for the occasion like wall of reflection, shield of the avenger, stand your ground, purging flames, etc and aegis (retreat) for pretty much everything. Healing and tanking don’t work well in the game so you shouldn’t try to build around that kind of support.

Sword/Focus + Hammer Guardian PvE build

obal.3218

Sword doesn’t go well with hammer. Mace is the best choice because of writ and will do the most damage. GS if you need pulls. Berserker gear is best. Run 3/5/0/4/2 if you need lots of reflect uptime and 5/5/0/4/0 if not.

obal.3218

Purging flames is a fire field and can be used for just that. Hallowed is the same.

Tome of wrath has a blast also.

Greatsword + 1h/focus builds do more and consistent dps than hammer + x. If you interrupt hammer chain then your dps tanks. The reasoning behind having a weapon to swap to is a dps rotation. Camping gs or hammer is less dps then rotating. You use up your bursty skill and swap between the two. The secondary choices in the sticky show when you should use each.

Shield utility is terrible. It’s a dps loss for both and be done better using utility skills. Torch isn’t as good as focus for dps or utility so it’s only useful if you use both which you only do for pure scepter.

Greatsword builds are preferred over hammer since they do more damage and that’s all that really matters in this game the way it is. Hammer is decent to use if you having a hard time surviving since it gives permanent protection but at a loss of dps and a constant light field to hinder might stacking.

Mace/focus is best for Hammer secondary. You would want a gs instead if you need pulls. Mace will do more damage in a rotation because of writ of persistence. It also gives you a couple of blocks.

Hammer Build for 40 & 50 Daily Fractals

in Guardian

Posted by: obal.3218

obal.3218

Try using mace/focus as your secondary for times when you don’t need a pull. It is 2 more blocks which are great for bosses and could end up doing more damage than gs in rotations. The rotation would be hammer chains → mace2 → focus skills → mace2 → hammer chains → repeat.

[Guide] DPS Guardian for PVE

obal.3218

The patch won’t make a difference for that in gs + 1h builds. You should be on the 1h set for about 9-10s. Camping it longer for another zealot’s fire would be worse. If your starting out in 1h for quick boss fights then the 2 focus skills will do quite a bit more than torch since the shield. The only way it could be better damage is if the shield doesn’t hit or if it is a long fight since shield will be on cd every other rotation. Adding 6 stacks of vuln and not having to dodge while shield is up still would be more appealing. Open world bosses I guess throw some fire if you want.

The only change I see with it would be the scepter rotation. The new rotation of smite -> focus skills -> 3x zealot’s fire instead of 2x -> focus skills -> repeat would be better. It will be less dps in our calcs since they are cut off at 30s and that means 1 less ray of judgement and a few seconds of waiting on zealot’s fire again. It will lead to more at that point. Both focus skills will be off recharge instead of having to swap back and forth like before for longer fights so it will be a nice clean rotation.

Last time I checked it was, but I didn’t bother doing the maths since months. It’s probably a dps gain on mace and scepter ( since they are less reliant on aa), can’t say about sword.
summons obal

Assuming your hitting one target and it bounces twice it is a gain over sword autos. The other autos are weaker so it’s even more of a gain. One bounce would be slightly less than sword aa. Even if bounces once or you can cleave multiple targets with autos there is still the vuln you put on for the group or can be a well timed blind for a slight loss. It’s not like it’s a big loss like flashing blade would be in that case. Most importantly though you get regen and become a tank and are healing and supporting your group and don’t need to run a healer tank build! Zerk it up with a focus.

Good Build for Fractals?

in Guardian

obal.3218

The best build would be 4/6/2/0/2 gs + mace or sword with focus depending on block needs and ease of cleaving and flip the 2 in virtues between unscathed and master of consecrations based on if reflects are needed or not for the event. For huge hitbox bosses (bloomhunger and molten duo) 6/6/0/0/2 scepter focus and torch. If you really feel the need to be tanky then hammer + mace/focus or gs for trash pulls with 3/5/0/4/2 or 5/5/0/4/0 depending on if reflects are needed. You can look at the sticky for the trait spreads.

What you have now is bad support for fractals for the following reasons. You should have 3 in radiance for blind spam to negate damage from hard hitting trash. You should have 2 in virtues for master of consecrations when reflections are needed since a lot of damage comes from projectiles in fractals and you can maintain projectile defenses doing wall → shield → wall with master of consecrations on. Shield is awful compared to a focus which gives blinds/vulns/blocks and negates far more damage than shield can. Also, you shouldn’t need more than 2 in virtues either like suggested for fractals since absolute resolution is a waste for everything in fractals but mai trin and the times where you need stability you can take both utilities and be fine without indomitable courage. Running more than 2 in virtues is more suited for a dungeon tour than fractals.

The second build doesn’t look worthwhile over the first one since it would do less dps and has no blind/vuln spam. The first one would probably be more dps doing 2/6 instead of 5/3 since the majority of your damage isn’t coming from symbols. Judging by the rest of the spreadsheet the first one would probably be in the upper 9k range if you ignore elusive power since it won’t be triggered much and a bit more if you consider it. There is 3/5/0/4/2 gs mace calc that is 9896 which would lead to similar damage. I’m not sure if 2h or writ was used but it would be the better of the two for that trait spread. It seemed like 2h mastery rotations were harder to pull off when I did them for the calcs.

The rotations video I made are what were used for the calcs along with a few others like 2h mastery tests and such. We do a rotation for 30s as perfect as possible and count all the different attacks done chopping off any further hits and symbol ticks at the 30s mark and then plug them into formulas. Doing new rotations would be a lot of work and Dekeyz isn’t that interested in the game anymore so I don’t want to bug her for exact numbers. She started to use some program as well which makes her work unsharable for people to pick it up and try to use it and dumps the results to a spreadsheet. The best I can give you is the ballpark above.

Unless your capping out on vuln reliably frailty is a good choice for 1h guardian weapons. The reason to take frailty or strength is that you will cap out with accuracy on the 1h weapons between all the buffs + right hand strength. There’s not much else to use when your capped out on crit, it’s day, and slaying sigils aren’t going to help or you need a ton of sets.

Nomads is the worst gear for pve since it doesn’t boost damage. It would be better to get gear that boosts both damage and survival. Celestial would give the most damage and least survival. Knights is middle ground for the two. Soldiers gives the least damage and most survival. The difference between knights and soldiers for damage is very minimal so you can take your pick. I prefer knights for reasons I use it but a few soldier pieces would probably be the best all around thing for you if that’s what your going for. Also keep in mind that healing power scales very poorly so it’s basically a wasted stat so it’s best to ignore anything with that on it.

Setup from video – 1980

Given that tanking doesn’t help your group the way aggro works and the heals are weak your pretty much a ranger pet with a wall of reflection. Some odd choices were made as well for what it’s going for. You could just run a hammer build with knights/soldiers/celestial gear and still be very tanky and provide a lot more support for your group as well as dps.

The important part of your damage would be in phase 1 for this. Just putting up your wall and using save yourselves at the right time will finish lupi off so you don’t need to go all out dumping everything into getting a good reflect. Zerker gear is fine. The optimal setup would be 4/6/0/0/4 scepter/focus + scepter/torch with seaweed salad food + undead potion. Sigils would depend on if your bothering to get stacks. I’d say undead + strength if not since you will keep a lot up with scepter.

Try the hammer builds if you want to be tanky. They do comparable damage to top dps builds and you get perma prot for the small tradeoff in damage. is Mace viable for dungeon Guardian?

in Guardian

Posted by: obal.3218

obal.3218

Scepter/Focus + Scepter/Torch is top dps if you fight a boss with a large hitbox. Torch isn’t good for anything else.

Mace is really good for fractals. Hammer + mace/focus does more damage than hammer camping and hammer/gs in some situations but you mainly will want it when you fight hard bosses like mossman, archdiviner, and mai trin. Sword cleave is awful there for when you run gs+1/focus so mace would be better.

For dungeons mace is better than sword where your taking little damage or condi damage that will strip people’s scholar bonus and mace will be enough to get it back, where cleaving is an issue which would be mainly pugs not doing los or grouping mobs, or when a boss with a small hitbox will die in about 10s since you can use focus skills + symbol then swap to gs to burst since sword has nothing bursty. Mace will do less than 2% less dps than sword in a gs+1h/focus rotation and that’s not counting the extra vuln from mace with symbolic exposure or if you get off mace #3. You can see the difference in dps and rotations in the dps guardian sticky.

Mace is good for fractals and some dungeons when you use it in rotations with gs or hammer. It’s about 1% less dps not counting extra vuln than sword in gs rotations and more dps than sword in hammer rotations if you need more blocks. Shield is the worst weapon choice in pve though.

I already did. Sword of Justice is decent in unoptimal cases. In an organized group that stacks might and vuln bane signet would be better. Tome of Wrath still isn’t worth taking. The only good part of the change was Shield of the Avenger. Use the command immediately and when it recharges to get 2 more aegis. I don’t see it being a replacement for retreat but it will be amazing in fractals or wherever you take both wall and shield.

Here is a somewhat chaotically written quick guide. I’ll probably ending up making an overview video guide of what to bring eventually so it’s not really final. It’s meant for organized groups but should give you an idea of what you should have. I have a knights set for somethings but it wouldn’t really work if you pug. Hammer is enough prot itself but it’s not really needed in a lot of areas anymore since you can change traits whenever.

Swamp:
Mossman – 3/5/0/4/2 Hammer/Mace+Focus retreat, wall, sheild, renewed, shelter. go in first to grab aggro for a bit.
Bloom – 4/6/0/0/4 Scepter Torch+Focus purge if don’t have ele to blast at start or retreat, wall, shield

Aquatic:
Krait – trident #4 at los spot then swap to spear. use hold the line and virtue of courage when the group. purging flame also
Jelly – stand your ground, bane sig, retreat. swap to 2h mastery and trident 5 the agony (starts at 75%). swap to spear after agony interupt then swap back when possible to get ready to interupt the next agony attack and repeat

Ascalon:
5/5/0/4/0 Hammer + X
stand your ground for first part and the courtyard, retreat for the town, wall, shield
Ashym – Hammer + Mace/focus retreat, wall, bane sig. use aegis as soon as you see him with a staff and wall at gs

Snowblind:
Stab the fire – Hammer + staff with wall, retreat for first event. run up to where they spawn and cast line as soon as you see them spawn. tag them with staff and use ring, wall, and zealots embrace to keep them busy and kite them away from the fire.

Elemental Source – 3/5/0/4/2 Hammer + GS signet of resolve, wall, stand your ground, hallowed ground. when transition starts get to the fire and put a wall down so you can safely light it and people can get to it safely. start in gs at transitions as well so you can group mobs and switch to hammer after. learn the ele melee move tell so you can blind, dodge, or aegis it

Lornarr – 5/5/0/4/0 Hammer + Mace/Focus retreat, bane signet, purging flames if no one has fire field to stack might during transitions

Cliffside:
5/5/0/4/0 hammer + mace/focus with retreat, bane sig, whatever else for first fight. Try to keep up aegis for people. Wall is unreliable for his projectile attack so don’t rely on it.

5/5/0/4/0 hammer + gs with retreat, wall, shield for chest seal. use reflect in middle and pull mobs if need be with gs.

5/5/0/4/0 hammer + gs with retreat, wall, purge for arm seals if using the mesmer portal tactic or theif shadowstep. use wall and pull mobs with gs. purge conditions.

5/5/0/4/0 hammer + staff with retreat, wall, purge for arm seals if NOT using the mesmer portal tactic or theif shadowstep. constantly pull mobs with staff and line or ring of warding them with a wall up at the los spot. purge if need be.

3/5/0/4/2 hammer + sword/focus for archy #2. go in first to grab aggro. save wall/sheild for his phases where he summons devourers since they eat aegis and his projectile pull hits hard.

Dredge:

4/6/2/0/2 GS + Mace/Focus for trash

Ice ele – 4/6/2/0/2 GS + Mace/Focus with stand your ground, hallowed ground, save yourselves. use stand your ground and hallowed when the vets are up and save yourselves as your own stun breaker if you get cc. use binding blades when it tries to heal.

Powersuit – 4/6/2/0/2 GS + Mace/Focus with retreat, wall, bane sig. use wall when he starts bomb animation or use aegis (won’t save you if you are on multiple circles). use sheild of wrath against agony attack.

Volcanic:
first part – 3/5/0/4/2 hammer + staff with stand your ground, wall, shield. use line/ring and wall/shield at los spots

second part 3/5/0/4/2 hammer + staff with stand your ground, wall, shield. cc vets with staff then swap to hammer and cc more. stability if you see circles

imbued shaman – 4/5/0/0/5 GS + Mace/Focus if you melee and GS + Scepter/Focus if you don’t with retreat, wall, shield. when it starts to bubble immediately run to it casting shield of wrath and shield of the avenger. when it has <= 5 stacks dodge the opposite way it was moving and cast wall and gs pull the adds to it. let you group know when it is about to run out (22s left on recharge) so you can back off.

Hammer + Mace/Focus is pretty good for harder fractal bosses. When your out of aegis, shelter, and renewed you can swap to mace/focus for 2 additional blocks. You also would have the symbol traits which would help mace too when swapping is needed.

The torch is absolutely crap, never take it over a focus. A focus offers more damage, more survivability and a blast finisher. All the torch offers is a weak 6 second aoe burn (which is 180 range, basically melee range) and a very weak, short range and difficult to aim condition cleanse.

Torch is good. You take it and focus when using scepter and rotate when fighting large hitobox targets. Zealot’s Fire does nearly the same damage as shield of wrath and you can get 2 in before focus skills are about to come of cd.

It’s good for open world since you won’t need much support. I’d use superior aria though when your not doing big zerg fest events for more swiftness. You will be doing almost as much damage as gs + 1h/focus builds.

For phase 2 barrage you should be able to alternate shield of wrath shelter shield of wrath with the focus trait. Just dodge back once then walk forward with shelter or shield up and you should be fine or stand in wall with shield of wrath on.

No. If your not throwing consecrated walls you should use 6/6/0/0/2 scepter/focus and gs if your soloing. Having an energy sigil in both should be enough dodges. If your walling him at 3 and baiting a barrage you only need one on the gs. Phase 2 and 3 attacks can pretty much all be blocked with 1 dodge + shelter or shield of wrath with renewed as a panic button so it’s best to get used to doing that to save dodges. Camp scepter as much as possible and take the scepter and focus traits in zeal and burning duration in radiance.

What Trice said or take mace instead of sword for when you need more blocks.

It’s preference. Celestial will give you the most damage with less survival. Soldier would be the other way around. Knight is a little stronger than soldiers but offers less survival. I prefer knight for what i use it for.

Guardian has high dps with unscathed and moderate without it compared to other classes in a group setting. We are rerunning numbers for guardian so they will probably go up a tiny bit after if this is updated as well.

What sigils for S/F?

Night/Force would be the best for night time. For day Force/Frailty if your in an optimized group that stacks might and has fury + banner of discipline. Force/Strength if not. It beats Accuracy by a little bit assuming your not capping on might.

Hammer is good vs hard trash and bosses. Weapon swap would be GS for bursting, mace/focus for more blocks (mossman, archdiviner, mai trin), or staff when mobs run to an los spot for more cc.

Being able to retrait whenever lets you optimize in each fractal and not be locked into hammer all the time. Scepter camping would be good for bloomhunger and molten duo. GS + sword/focus would be good against dredge bosses, maw, and fractals with easy trash like thaumanova.

For dungeons GS + 1H builds are the way to go. GS is pretty much a staple of every build for bursting and grouping mobs. The only time it’s not worth using is against large hitbox bosses since scepter camping is best. Hammer is great for a lot of fractal content but GS is also useful there and better in open world and dungeons.

How long did it take you to solo Lupi?

My first solo was on guardian with mace for an additional block. Took about 10 hours to kill the big bad wolf in about 15 minutes. The times when bubbles were scary without reckless dodge/evasive arcana bring old memories.

That was back when anchor was meta and no one had ever done it on anything besides warrior.

I did it :p

Sorry, I forgot about that screenshot. I think you did it on ele too at that point but there was nothing to really look at to learn from except Wethospou’s videos at the time. I know mine were inefficient as could be that I did

My first solo on guardian took 1 hour which was my 2nd attempt and lasted 37min . It was ranged for phase 1-2. My first full melee one took me 3 hours with full knights gear on the 7th attempt which was almost 30min. That was back when anchor was meta and no one had ever done it on anything besides warrior. I had done duos/trios and taken groups full of first timers countless times so it all helped me do it with ease. My first full berserker melee one took me 3 hours. My latest one with no vigor and 1 energy sigil took me about 3 hours again and 10 hours to do it reliably and get a good time.

Warrior took me 5 hours. I felt like a noob since guardian took me so little time and warrior should have been easier. It took me some time to figure out how sword 4 worked and to deal with WA delay and fumble dodges.

Staff guardian, bowbear ranger, p/p thief, and flamethrower engi took me 1-2 hours each. This was after reliably being able to solo him on guardian and warrior though.

In a group 66002 with scepter and 46202 without it. I don’t think it would change for a solo setting but I’m not sure. We haven’t run numbers for solo yet but we might after we rerun the group ones.

It seems that’s part of it. It helped a little when I used the ptv staff in a full berserker group. It didn’t work miracles or anything though.

I use 3/5/0/4/2 for mai trin and i use a soldier staff to just help pull the wraths better in arah p3. I usually just use a berserker one for fractals now and try to get in a symbol after the line if I have time then swap but I usually don’t. I usually don’t attack once with it so I figured mine as well go with more survival if that’s the case.
