Even with that trait you will have lower effective power. I use radiant fire and swap it out for powerful blades for hard bosses like mossman and archdiviner where I use sword/focus on swap for more blocks. The trait selection is underwhelming but radiant power makes it worth it.

This is great work. I would like to add this to the dps guard sticky if that’s ok with you. It seems good to show people the tradeoff of dps they will get from running the different variations from the support they will give up.

Could you add the following in? I’m curious to see the difference in just going 10 in virtues as well as going full dps with no support.

Obal,
If I mainly PUG, should I switch out some of my Berserker gear for Assassin’s to get my crit-chance up? And if so, which pieces should I switch out? (exotic gear, btw) Thanks.

Get head, chest, pants assassins like Nike suggested. It will raise your EP more than full zerk but it isn’t a big diff.

The entire game is filled with speed killing elite wannabe’s that die every 10 seconds, and flame and blame it on everyone else. They do that because they copy what they saw someone else do… they saw big numbers not understanding why or how… they drolled, they copied and they use it wrongly with the wrong people which is bad for everyone.

And of course they are never to blame even though they are more downed then alive… how could they, after all they copied the guy that did 54000 whirling wrath by exploiting the bug, with a perfect party composition…

I thought my guide was pretty thorough but I guess not. The builds I offer and I summed up are ones the community has deemed good with all the right support and how to use it. They aren’t even my builds and I took no credit.

I’m not really sure why he would say he doesn’t know the class well and make a guide to show it. I’m not sure why he continues to say negative things about the community as well as the stuff I had out there just simply showing numbers and how much DPS a guardian can do. Making a build guide tailored for pugging that has no support to the group is detrimental to pugs.

I’d say these would be the best choices if you don’t want to go deep into virtues. There really is no reason to not put 10 in it though given how great of support you get and are supposed to be doing. The gain of a small amount of power and wasted traits isn’t worth it.

You actually lose EP by filling in the last 10 points to zeal instead of valor based on the raw stat points. The traits are really unappealing other than the gs and scepter and the damage multiplier. You can just run sword + scepter if you feel like you need to range and swap traits. I’d still prefer virtues since pugs will be all over and probably won’t be doing condi cleanse and in organized groups you can keep the unscathed buff up a decent amount of the time.

There are plenty of LoS spots in this fractal and you will want to group them up and cc them like any other content. Then again, you can basically skip doing anything in this fractal except for the clown car and bosses.

We have very few min-max options (or none?) in order to complete it. No silly stacking in a corner or on the boss cheap brainless tactics – just proper gameplay. From my experience the following works the best (TLDR; play it properly):"

I guess doing things like the cannon room in 90s is worse than your way. Bombs would be the same idea but takes longer only because you have to wait for them to respawn.

http://youtu.be/YerTi1PM6YU

  1. Use all 4 spots in the boss room. You have a high enough IQ to do that, I promise.

The bosses require you to use only 1 spot and better to use just 1 and wait if you need more pours unless you miss.

Thankyou for the advice everyone!

I’m going to keep practising and see if i improve, i have three questions however…

1. I have never heard of “Whirl finisher in Light Field” to cure a condition before can someone please explain how this works?

You can put down a light field from things you have like symbol of wrath and wall of reflection. When they are up you can use skills with whirl finishers such as whirlwind attack and binding blades which triggers cleansing bolt.

2. It is suggested that i use Knights gear to help until i get better, what about Soldier or Sentinel? Since we get so much precision and ‘Right Hand Strength’ in 30 Radiance, can you ever have two much crit chance?

You do gs + sword dps rotations. RH strength only affects weapon skill 1-3 of 1h weapons and not your gs, reflections, offhand, etc so you will want the crit chance from knights.

3. I have always been hesitant to go deep into Virtues trait line because i thought pure stat increase is better than boon duration? Is a few seconds shaved off our Virtue recharge and a slight increase in boon duration worth the 300-600 stat loss?

You will have at least 3-5 boons on average which will give you a dps boost to everything instead of 1 weapon if you have 25 in virtues. You lose dps in stats and the traits you would pick won’t really add too much. You get absolute resolution which is really nice. You can swap to unscathed if you don’t need it for what your doing at the time and probably do near or more dps than dumping points elsewhere since you have 2 aegis + renewed + reflects to maintain it for a decent amount of time. You give up a little dps for more support which is why you bring a guardian in a group in the first place.

Running knights armor + zerk trinkets with the builds should be fine. That is what a lot do at first or stick with. You won’t give up a ton of damage and you avoid getting 1 shotted by more things. Given your situation the hammer builds would probably be better since there is a lot less work with doing dps rotations since the optimal rotation with hammer is press 1 and you will have perma prot and more health.

Having the same build for pve and wvw isn’t good. You should run different builds and gear for both. It’s annoying but they are 2 different modes that require 2 different setups to be more effective than just running the same one.

The point of bringing a guardian in your group is for reflections and removal. That is why you trait that way to get the minimal amount of good support and dump the rest into dps. The tradeoff is worth it. The 10% from honor 25 won’t be active much if you think about it. You tend not to dodge at trash mobs and for bosses if you actually have to dodge you have perma vigor so it won’t last long.

I skimmed through the video so I might have missed things. Here are some answers to your questions. I tried to be as constructive as possible.

Q: How does this compare to other Guardian DPS builds?

This build is traited for pure dps. I’m not sure if it would be maximizing damage since it relies on foes standing still and scepter is single target. I don’t think it would out damage a gs + sword/focus rotation with the current builds under most cases. The rotations he suggests don’t seem optimal. Cleansing flame is a dps loss and the gs rotation would be 2→4→3→5→AA→2 swap and you would be in other weapon for 9s then swap.

Other builds are traited for the minimal amount of support which goes a long way and the rest of the points go into dps. The dps loss is small and worth the tradeoff since you bring a guardian in a group for the support it brings in the first place. This is supposed to be a pug build but it doesn’t have things like traited reflects, removal, and shouts. You could swap things around as he suggests but it still wouldn’t be as effective as the other builds support wise. This build also suggests you should be ranging so virtue of justice is kind of wasted since the point to it is more the blind/vuln it does rather than the burn (great too though mostly for the 10% against burning foes) which you will lose since you are not near the foes. You will also want to be in melee range for reflect use. He does say you can gs then hop out though.

Q: Some initial concerns when looking at the build and gear?

It doesn’t look like he tinkered with his build to check EP. Full assassins armor and weapons + accuracy + perception would not be optimal. If you add in things like fury, banner of discipline, and spotter it would be less especially if your just going to mainly use scepter + RH strength. A more optimal thing would be to go chest, pants, helm assassins and the rest zerk as Nike calcuated and using force/night/slaying and bloodlust with RH str and perception without RH str. Ruby orbs are just not worth using. If your going to be ranging a lot you shouldn’t have much of a problem keeping the scholar rune buff up. If you have problems then Ranger runes would be the next best option.

Torch really isn’t worthwhile for PVE. Your virtue in a group would do enough burning, #4 is a dps gain but against 1 foe, and #5 is a dps loss and you can just whirl in light fields while doing more damage for the same effect. Focus is the best for more blinds, vuln, block, and more damage.

Q: How does this compare to Obal’s build? (Note: I am not looking to start a flame war, so please don’t make it that, it just happens to be the build I currently use and like.)

The builds I posted offer a lot better support while potentially giving up a small amount of dps. You will want that support whether your in an organized group or pugging (especially when pugging) and is why you bring a guardian in the group. The gear I suggest would lead to more optimal dps as well.

11k HPs on nearly all the best DPS builds?! IMHO That’s simply not playable.

This shows how unplayable it is http://youtu.be/whAcKsXHvxw
Dead zerkers do zero dps as you can see.

But this is not how the average game goes for many people. Here’s your random average Joe video: http://youtu.be/o0G3i9DLhUE

I use zerker gear myself with a hammer build when I’m pugging but I seriously wonder how people are able to survive in average pugs with the number 1 DPS build in OP’s list?

The person in the video had bad utility choice, no weapon swap?, no energy sigils?, and didn’t know what to do in phase 2. You can just put wall up and stand in it with shield of wrath up and be fine, dodge backwards waiting half a second and dodging forwards while casting aegis, dodge backwards and use renewed focus or shelter and walk back to him and be fine. Guardians have so much at their disposal for survival that using it properly is better than trying to tank hits. You just have to know the fight and get used to using what you have.

I would agree the 20/25/0/0/25 build is not for the average pug in Arah and suggested in my guide taking 10/25/0/10/25 or 10/30/0/5/25 in that case depending on your skill level. However, someone claimed it was unplayable so I just provided that to show otherwise. I use 20/25/0/0/25 everywhere but fractals and do fine. Our typical lupi fights don’t push him nearly that far into phase 3 and I usually get targeted by the single target life steal and am fine. I have 2x aegis, renewed focus, shield of wrath, wall of reflection, and shelter to keep me alive. Most classes going into the fight won’t have nearly as much as that to negate damage.

Hello cuddly guardian friends!

I have a problem, i have been using the Altruistic Healing build since the launch of the game and have only recently switched to Sword/Focus Zerker build.

I love Sword/Focus, i love the higher dps, but i have died so many times now my brain has gone on a holiday to Southsun Cove and i dont think its coming back.

Use a greatsword and do dps rotations with that and sword. You have an extra blind and do more damage.

What i really miss the most about the AH build is using shouts to spam cleanse debuffs from myself and friends. I have been trying to find a build that will let me keep high dps yet also give me access to shout condition removal.

Shout cleanse isn’t good. You have to bring shouts instead of better utilities and waste them to remove conditions. Purging flames and Absolute Resolution are more than enough usually. You can whirl in light fields with gs if you need more.

This is where i need your lovely help, is it better to go 30 into Honor for Pure of Voice, then use Scholar runes and zerker gear. OR. do the standard dps build and use Soldier runes?

I have been messing with build editor and what i think it comes down to is how good is ‘Elusive Power’ and ‘Power of the Virtuous’. Also i need to consider if i am capable of keeping my health above 90% to get the benefit of Scholar runes.

Anything more than 10 points in honor is a waste for gs + sword builds. The same goes for hammer at 20. If you can’t keep the scholar buff Ranger runes are the next best thing (bugged so you don’t need companion to get 5% buff). Power of the virtuous will be around 5% always. For Elusive Power, you don’t have to dodge against most trash and when you do have to dodge you have perma vigor and won’t proc the buff much so it isn’t very good for most content.

I dont think i will ever be capable of going FULL zerker spec and gear, im just not skilled enough. So any help would be great thanks

It’s an adjustment. Your pretty much forced to relearn the content. I struggled at first like most but got the hang of it and can see how much more useful it is than AH. You have a lot to keep yourself alive it’s just a matter of managing what you have and it takes time to get it down. Hang in there and you will get it and be that much better at the game and much more use to your group. If you want more info on builds, rotations, etc you can look at the guide that’s here.

Hi

This days im just using much more GS that 1H sword in the rotation or indungeons or Arah and just for fun in PVE events, im thinking to change from 10/30/0/5/25 to 15/25/0/5/25 to win Weakness in GS symbol over the RHS.

Should i do this or stick to 10/30/0/5/25 or change it ? Another option is go 10 honor for the shout CD trait.

thx

I would suggest running one of the 3 I have. You won’t be able to maintain the symbol for long so you won’t do much vuln with gs alone. It’s also short vuln so it will overwrite better vuln which would hurt your group if they have good sources of vuln. If your group sucks for stacking vuln it would be ok. The only time I would really run it is fractals since sword cleave sucks for some parts and I just use hammer instead. It’s great for the hammer build though since you can maintain the symbol and around 5-6 stacks from just auto attacking.

How does might and bane signet buff the reflects since reflects take the bosses power but your crit damage and precision..Vulnerability and the + 1% per boon would buff it but the power increase has no effect at all on reflects

It was there to speed things up in phase 1 and get him further into phase 2 as we attacked him while he did his aoe. We saved ray of judgement and a couple virtues of justice for 25 vuln and burning along with save yourselves, hallowed ground, and virtue of courage for all the boons to boost the reflect damage.

Ah. I posted this at guru but only just saw it here.

Very nice!
Did you decide to skip casting Tome #5 on prebuff for the might stacks? It’s a blast finisher and should also be affected by quickness.

Thank dwayna you had all those AH ticks to keep you alive through those tough times.

I figured the might stacks would have gotten overwritten by virtue of justice anyway since 3 of us planned to use it during phase 1. We should have probably done it anyway since we spaced the virtue use out to help with vuln better since it faded towards the second half of the phase since we were saving ray of judgement for before the aoe to reach 25 vuln for that.

Thnx Obal
So we can see the difference between Asc. and Exo aswell, if we compare the numbers with your earlier Vid?!

Thnx also to show the difference between full Cleric and the other things.

Could you do a direct comparison with your Hammer- Fractal-Build? That would be great! (Hammer-GS).

For my old video I didn’t have a strength booster and was missing 1 boon so I added 6% more DPS on top of ascended armor + weapon. I hit for 52-53 without the additional dragon breath bun proc I used for 56k compared to the 49k with exotic armor + weapon.

There’s been so many arguments about dps and clerics gear, AH, etc that I figured I’d just add that in case the arguments come up again which they eventually will.

I did tests comparing gs + sword rotations with 10/25/0/10/25 compared to hammer 15/25/0/20/10 on the indestructible golem without any buffs from gear to make it longer. I got 55s kill with gs + sword and 53s with gs + hammer rotations. I got 1:02 with just doing hammer auto and the same time doing mighty blow → 3x hammer auto → might blow rotations so there is no difference in dps with that other than using mighty blow and breaking up chains which would be a loss. The whole point to using a hammer build is for perma prot so you wouldn’t do a rotation and be optimal dps. I did each test a few times and got nearly the same times. The hammer build isn’t a big loss in dps for the perma you gain which is OP for fractal and not needed for much else other then starting out or pugging if you feel the need.

Max dps would most likely be 20/25/0/0/25 with gs + sword/focus rotations. I use this for everything other than fractals. People don’t put points in valor since they put points in the other trait lines to get damage multipliers which add more dps and the valor traits are selfish support and underwhelming for pve so it isn’t worth it for just getting the crit damage. Some1 ever tried 10/25/0/25(Writ of persitence)/10(I if VI is not needed) Hammer+ GS rotation?
In my tests Hammer AA+MB (or AA only) is pretty equal to sword AA. So, this build could be a alternative idea for people who want to play with the hammer and/or gs instead of 1h sword.
Proper use of MB can give your team a few more mightstacks. Disadvantage is…stupid light field on hammer AA Chain…..

The 15/25/0/20/10 would be better than 25 in honor since you can keep up around 5-6 vuln if you auto attack with hammer and you won’t trigger elusive power most of the time between not having to dodge at trash mobs and perma vigor for when you do have to dodge. You also wouldn’t want to compare it to sword only since the build is to do gs + sword/focus rotations. Doing tests on the indestructible golem with no gear buffs I got a few seconds quicker kill doing 15/25/0/20/10 hammer + gs doing the normal gs burst rotation → 3x hammer chains → gs burst compared to 10/25/0/10/25 gs + sword rotations. The difference in dps is pretty minimal considering other things but the whole reason to run hammer is for perma prot. Just doing hammer is a noticeable loss compared to the gs + sword rotations, but it isn’t huge. That is why you run hammer if you need the prot and the gs + sword if you don’t and focus on dps. Both builds do great damage but suite different needs.

Didn’t know guards were doing this too. You still stacking perception? I usually just stack perception and food plus warriors to get my crit chance at 99 last I checked? You go Sin armor to swap to bloodlust?

Nike did calculations and found that to be better. The difference is only <1% no matter if you have RH strength or not. If you run RH use bloodlust and if not perception. I usually just run hammer for fractal and 20/25/0/0/25 for everything else and stack perception. The crit chance from that with full zerk gear (armor exotic) + banner + 25 perception stacks + fury + minotaur steak = 93.71% so you still have a bit more to go.

Run the 15/25/0/20/10 hammer build if you have someone with condition removal in the group and 15/15/0/20/20 if not. If you have 2 guardians in the group and the other is the hammer guardian then run 10/25/0/10/25 gs + sword/focus build or you can take 5 out of honor and put it somewhere else for more dps.

Right, so you responded to me because I wasn’t agreeing that AH is bad. You confirm what I was saying. Like I said, if I so happened to be on the “AH is bad, bad players use it” bandwagon.

I’m on the “AH is bad for PVE, misguided or stubborn players use it” bandwagon like most that you would label as “AH is bad, bad players use it” bandwagon.

Anything is pretty much viable in this game but it doesn’t mean it is optimal or good. For PVE it’s best to run a build that does good dps and the proper support at the same time instead of dumping 30 points to get a selfish trait and have a very underwhelming adept and master traits on top of that. You miss out on too much and won’t get to experience or learn the true potential of the class or do all you can do for your group. You can supplement extra survival with gear choice if need be. With the number of blocks, projectile defense, blinds, cc, prot, vigor, and dps potential at a guardian’s disposal survival shouldn’t be an issue with some practice and experience.

People just seem to have 1-2 bad experiences and give up on it or are just too stubborn to try and post things like omg zero dps dead zerker! It gets just as old as someone saying zerk is great and rest is trash which adds some hostility to both sides I guess.

okay so since there is talk of ranger. i have ranger that i love that ive been kinda working on lvling occasionally. would a trap master ranger be decent for dungeons?

No. The only ranger build that would add value over another class would be this http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/84268-the-perfect-dps-ranger-guide-for-real/

The problem is that sword is a pain to get used to and is a difficult class to play. It is also unusable for some fights since you can’t max melee stuff and your forced with greatsword which is rather weak. It is also annoying since it hits so fast that it pushes enemies out of range of reflects. They bring spotter, frost spirit, fury, vuln, and an extra reflect which are nice though.

A good trio would be a guardian or mesmer for reflects and support, a warrior for offensive support, and 1 other.

You get perma prot, perma vigor, blind/vuln spam, auto attacking symbol maintains 5-6 more vuln if you do nothing but auto attack, traited consecrations for purging flames/wall/hallowed, traited shouts, traited extra condition removal, and decent damage. Get full zerker trinkets and weapons. For armor you can go with knights if you want more survival or zerk if you want more damage and can deal with it. AH is a lot of points better spent for damage or the right support and that is what is best for pve.

[Guide] DPS Guardian for PVE

I absolutely do not agree, simply because you always have a organized group where you can maximum your dps and do not need to consider surviving for you own. This build is very misleading. The way I see guardian is that you cannot do damage or span skills if you are down by running glass dps build. Same way as I play thief.
I do agree that EM + AH is selfish, or not? Because only if you live can you continue supporting the team. The guardian should definitely be the last one standing even in a wipe. So from this perspective, AH is the best support for the team, especially in high end pve.

I added a how do I survive section. It’s a long list of stuff you have at your disposal. The builds I went over give the right support as well as great dps. Guardian is one of the highest sustainable dps classes in the game and isn’t worth building it to tank and lose things that would help your group survive like blind spam, vuln spam, condition removal, and great dps so you can facetank and hit like a wet noodle. I still pug once and awhile and do fine running the builds I listed as ones I personal use that are the max dps versions and I do fine. It takes some time to get used to dps guardian after running the AH facetank builds. You will become a better player and do more for your group then you could ever dream of compared to running AH builds in the process.

The same can be said about your thief. Survival comes from playing the class properly. You can just chain black powder on mobs and laugh as they can’t do anything to you or your group. Do smoke screen against foes with projectiles, stealth past trash or just skip whole events like this http://youtu.be/YerTi1PM6YU , use pistol whip and evade, or just dodge when needed. Again you will be keeping you and your group alive doing the proper support and good dps at the same time. I started playing glass theif in fractals and can see how OP they are and I do fine.

I would just give it a shot and learn how to play the classes to their full potential rather than run a build from 6+ months ago when people were still learning the game and didn’t know any better. If your struggling just put on a set of knights gear and run the hammer build since it will give you more survival and group support than AH as well as hit harder.

"Fumble" dodges.

This has been a groundbreaking bug in the core of the game play for a long time now. Failing at content when playing it as intended is very frustrating and off putting. Will this be fixed in the near future?

1-50 since they don’t give fractal weapon skin boxes.

go and ask people who have done lupi solo with multiple professions. im pretty sure they will tell you warrior was the easiest. + warrior probably has the most room for error.

Everyone knows that bowbear is definitely the easiest. Bear is too OP.

Guardian Fractal Build?

in Guardian

The hammer build is best for fractals which is 15/15/0/20/20 or 15/25/0/20/10 if you have someone else with condition removal for max dps. You would change secondary to gs for grouping mobs, staff for running, kiting, or pulling mobs and cc them at start, and sword/focus for extra blocks at harder bosses like archdiviner. The gs sword/focus build is best for dungeons other than fractals.

[Guide] DPS Guardian for PVE

It really just comes down to the situation to spend the last 10 points which is why I made the guide the way I did. Like Cat says the 10/25/0/10/25 is best for pugging since fights will last longer.

In an organized group shout cd is kind of useless since things die too fast for it to matter. You mine as well trait for more power at that point. For something like Arah or Fractal you will want the perma vigor trait. RH strength is a good trait to dump 5 more points to at that point or even 5 in zeal for fractals since sword cleave sucks for things like clown car. The shout cd would be nice in fractal, but it still shouldn’t be needed since you should be running hammer build and if you still run 2 guards the hammer guard will have it and you will add even more overkill support without it traited. If you don’t need the vigor 20/25/0/0/25 with perception stacking is the best choice.

You have to backpeddle away from him when he hugs himself then use sword 5 so you are out of range of him. If your right next to him with it then it will go off but immediately end and you will be dead. Sword is a lot better than sheild.

LFG Tool is breaking my Spirit

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Hi, I’m Bob. I play a scepter/torch guardian and have been getting massive grief from everyone I party with in the lfg tool. This is my build and I can crit over 600 with my burning so I know my personal damage is fine. Yet I constantly get people yelling at me and even some death threats and its really ruining my immersion. I haven’t even been able to craft a single piece of dungeon gear because I’m constantly booted and its just so wrong and frustrating. People say these instances are not that difficult yet people treat them so seriously.. My faith says to forgive and forget but this is just so crushing. Help?

Hi Bob, I’m Gandalf. I play a staff guardian and have been getting massive grief from everyone I party with in the lfg tool also. I can solo lupicus with my mighty staff but people keep calling me a noob and kicking me. Add me to your fellowship and we will journey up the mountains past our fiercest foes and frighten others into the wall so they will be powerless against us! We will earn great coin by offering safe travels to humble citizens through the treacherous undead wastelands of the renowned City of Arah!

The truth about clerics gear in pve

in Guardian

Guide to succeeding high level fractals:

Use wall of reflection and shield of the avenger when needed.
Use aegis during hard trash mobs and bosses
Blind spam mobs
Use hammer for perma protection which is so much better than regen and cleric heals
Line of sight and group mobs
Use ring and line of warding as the mobs come to the line of sight spot
Use stability whenneeded
Use scale venom since it’s OP in fractal
Dodge when needed
Rally off of good DPS is always win
Blind, weakness, grouping mobs, projectile reflection/destruction, aegis, CC, stability, prot, good dps…. you can do all these things as a guardian
Other classes can bring additional support of all these things and it will mitigate damage beyond anything a set of clerics, pvt, knights, celestial, sentinel, cavalier, giver, or settlers gear or weak heals could dream of

What not to do:

Facetank
Don’t use the proper utilities
Die slow deaths as your down and your group lacks dps to rally and will die reviving you
Think your heals do much good since your group will still most likely still get 1-2 shotted
Don’t group mobs or LoS
Don’t use blinds or weakness
Ignore good builds and strategies and call people elitists that use and preach them to help others
Take 2-3x as long for being stubborn or ignorant
Take the effort and learn to play and improve instead of asking for advice and ignoring it or claiming it doesn’t work

So basically Clerics gear is detrimental there. The same would apply to dungeons which are easier so there is even less of a need for weak heals.
