condi rangers are survival masters. you can easily kite 2-4 players while taking forever to be killed. the big thing to me is making sure that your other weapon(s) match well. pretty much all the melee weapons work well for it. personally i would go with sword/x or a GS.
also, condi rangers are heavily dependent on positioning to get your bleed stack. if you cannot out flank or work your opponent you will have a tough time getting kills.

dailies count whether its pvp, wvw, or pve towards the reward. so if you cant get it pvp then just go do some gathering or whatever dumb thing they want you to do.
Actually there’s not a problem of balance, there’s a problem of AoE. And to fix that ANet need to make a big rework over all classes… a rework that you will never see.

i been taking screen shots of almost all my matches since the 2nd. i have sooo many triple class and double doubles. my favorite is 2 of each on both teams and everyone is solo (ive asked a couple times). whatever spvp is crap now, too many little things that makes me feel like im wasting time rather than enjoying my time.
i had a couple of landslides and a couple of really close matches.
one of the landslides tho we had someone leave for like 4-5min and then come back (not afk but actually logged out). so i cant really blame that on anet.
the quality of a ranger is heavily dependent on the skill of the player. very easy to learn the basic play, much harder to learn the advance play and be good at it.
for solo play the pet works great if you are attentive. for group play you really got to keep your pet in line. its ability to pull aggro can get stuff out of position quick. but they can add buffs to your team and help with stacking condis. honestly to be good at the class you do need a fair amount of awareness.
in pvp your pet is a pain for everybody else. especially if you choose the right ones for your play style and really keep them on task with what they are intended for. even a “dead” pet can rez you in down state. you can even still use their special ability while in DS. good ole wolfie has saved me a few times scaring everyone off.

just make a character of every class, use the gates to get to the mists so you can experience what the lvl 80 version will be like. on the right side of the mists map there are monster npcs to fight, class npc at the north, and golems all over the map. honestly its the best way to get a feel for the classes and game imo.
I think rangers should have the option to turn off their pets instead of letting it just go into a mob and commit suicide. If it’s stowed while in combat, can’t I just command it to come out and fight when I WANT it to?

As I’ve stated repeatedly in the past, Ranger has 2 layers of learning. Most professions are either easy or hard. Ranger is easy but also hard. You can pick it up and do fine with it but there’s a second layer you have to discover to truly be effective with it. Most players never discover that second layer and are perpetually stuck in an uphill battle to understand the profession. There’s more to it than pew pew or evade evade. It’s a very viable, powerful profession but unfortunately most people assume it’s not because most people haven’t/don’t or won’t take the time to truly explore it.
this is very true of this classes common counterparts in other games.
and ranged clkittene comes from noobs who cant get in close and work them. it also comes from the standard noob desire to pick that type of class, much like a warrior type class. both are noob/lazy heavy classes to pick.
personally i love the ranger, its fun to play. each weapon is very different from the others. i would gladly give up the pet for a slight buff in base damage and toughness and/or vitality. alot of rangers i have run into do not make good use of their pet either.
Are you in the mists? For some reason I cannot open unsafe gifts in PvP / PvP lobby (while I can open all the other ones).
In turn, I can open all consumables in PvE, except for PvP reward progress. I have to go back to the PvP lobby to be able to double click that.

they obviously have made their choice. get a team or stop playing pvp. if your goal is to shrink not grow the community then they made the right choice…all though a dumb one.
and i dont see why it would be hard to make it so no more than 2 solo players go against a full premade. or make unranked 3 player or less queue.
as a mainly soloq player, i dont care about the leaderboard i just want competitive games.
but oh well, lots new games coming out over the next year.

personally think they should not be in ranked.
maybe some of the current builds dont really allow for one to be full melee…
warriors with the right weapons and build can be mobile, cc, and deal good damage. personally i dont think Hambow or Shoutbow really bring out the best a warrior has to offer.
rangers are another under rated melee class. full of blocks, evades, condi, and ok damage. the only thing they lack is ability to takes lots of damage, but with the right build and skills they can be decently tankey.
dont get me wrong tho i definitely agree there is WAY TOO MUCH aoe in this game!

The soloq was ok before the patch , now its unplayable. Every 2nd or 3rd match i am put against premade team that stomp us like 500-100 , i mean what are arenanet thinking with this move. Soloq RUINED.
tbh with you i was on a team of all solos in ranked (i asked them) and we almost 500-100 the other team with the only coordination being who was taking home, who was going for treb and who would focus mid. after the game started we only spoke at the end with a gg.
really not all stompings are premades, alot are but not all. sometimes if you get stuck with 2 or more kitten players your team cant do anything. and that happens ALOT in unranked since the patch.
See how that works for you in 2 months. When you back to slow Q’s again because the solo qr’s stopped qing.
in 2 months the solo queuers will find people or teams to queue with. they will adapt. and maybe more than 2 pro teams will appear because of it.
highly doubt this. alot will stop playing. many will try to find teams but have trouble (look at the new wonderful forum). competitive teams wont necessarily be down with you playing whatever class/build you want. and some will endure for awhile and move on to another game that has pvp that doesnt punish the solo player.
my prediction is that this move will greatly reduce the overall pvp player base.
Solo players don’t want to get in TS, listen to others bark orders, we just want to play the game at our own leisure and have fun.

i dont understand why people have such a hard time understanding this. who knows, its probably the same people who bark out orders, rage on ts, and mouth breathe to high hell.
Do you really need a leaderboard for playing at your own leisure and have fun?
no leaderboards are not necessary imo. but a team of pugs playing against a 5man premade is not fun. granted that doesnt happen as often as some think, but even ending up against groups of 3 in a premade gives that team a huge advantage over 5 solos.

What is the point of having a 3rd skill for sword, dagger, and pistol on a thief? seems silly that if you put anything in your offhand it is replaced with an offhand weapon skill. and you have only 3 skills for how long in pve 2-3 levels that take 15min to go thru. or is there a way to make it so offhand doesnt trump it?
someone mentioned on another post about making a zone in hotm that when you enter all players are red. kinda like a royal rumble type area.
though dueling would be awesome and preferred for me. i wouldnt make another peep about having nothing to do in the mists.

I really don’t see how this is possible. How can you hold 2 points all by yourself against a team that is reasonably organized, as most are in the arenas if they have groups in them?
its not about holding 2 points at the same time all by yourself. its all about playing off your teammates. bad players make the same mistakes over and over again. learn what those mistakes are and how you can capitalize on them to get points for your team.
a common example
say you got 4 people on your team constantly engaging in road fights. unless the other team is well disciplined, more than likely they will get into a 3v4, 4v4, or 4v5 with your teammates on the road, making them also weak at holding points. go cap the points while theyre busy.
sometimes being the only one on your team playing to win will get other people on the team in the right mode.
will dishonor play a role in the leaderboards?
It’s true to an extent but I can tell you from first hand experience you can win as a solo player and “carry” bad players
Most people do their own thing without communication etc
I find the best thing to do is simply what your team needs
No one going home? You do it
No one going mid everyone going far? Do not go mid alone and get rekt
No one grabbing/killing treb while you keep getting rekt at mid? DO ITetc etc
You want to play solo and succeed? Be flexible

didn’t you know, they intentionally match you up with the intent on your team losing.
btw, idk, im a nub. but when i solo in ranked i get mostly even matches and have been averaging 2/3 wins since the new patch. still getting lots of teams with 3 of the same professions. even had one yesterday with 3 rangers and 2 warriors, we lost that but i think its cause we had a dolt on our team.

^ Would kill pvp honestly. The amount of toxicity, trolling, abuse, etc would be out of control.
if this game became f2p i would quit. f2p games have the worst communities. it amazes me the # of horrible people a 1 time $20-40 fee keeps out. id rather see the game go sub-based before f2p.
what keeps a game from going esports is the ease of which it is to follow. LoL, starcraft, etc made it because it is a simple concept that anyone can figure out within a couple minutes of watching. honestly i cant think of a game in all of esports that was/is successful and complicated to follow. yes the advance gameplay is complex but it doesnt appear that way when watching it.
^ ive had alot of matches since patch with 3 of the same profession on the same team.
I am currently in Avg. queue time of 22 minute in Ranked Arena. Seems like queue times are a little screwed up!
alot of people have said “off hour” queue times blow. glad i manly play during peak hours
courtyard isnt bad, but its not a good TDM style map.
i’d like to see TDM get its own queue and a few more maps (better designed ones) get put into it.

Been playing the game for a little over a month. Looking for some people to PvP with. I typically play a condi ranger, tho I am still playing with other classes to see what I like/am good with. in ranked matches I am 50/50 playing solo. I’d like to find a good group of people that want to compete but also know how to have fun. No rage kitties and people who can’t see their own faults (makes you a better player) but also people who understand when someone is trying their best (thats all you can ask really). Would be cool if we could get good enough to compete in the tournaments.
WvW seems like fun but it is a bit much solo. I am not into zergs tho and think the roaming side of it looks fun. I’m a real newbie in this area of the game. Also, don’t mind doing PvE occasionally but would prefer to spend most of my time doing PvP.
I typically play 3-5 nights a week, NA CST (GMT -6), 7pm to 10-11pm. With winter here more time will be spent on the game during the weekends. Usually once daylight is gone you’ll see me pop on.
Some things I don’t want to deal with
- requirements to be on voice chat at all times while playing (obviously when partied i will be on)
- rage kitties. rage behind your computer, i dont want to listen to it or read it.
- mandatory “must be doing what the guild is doing”
TLDR
LF some fun people to be competitive in sPvP with and enjoy WvW and PvE for fun.

which isnt exactly that much of an alert. could easily be drowned out by TV, music, etc.
honestly, if their best defense for why this system is better is there’s an alert and now you cant do anything else but wait while in queue, its a cruddy one.
i’d gladly wait 5minutes for a match to start if im doing something.
doing nothing for 2 minutes for a pop gets really old after it happens over and over and over again. it encourages me to do something else not game related or leave the mists to do something else.
of those complaining about unbalanced matchups, what are you playing ranked or unranked? i notice a BIG difference right now in match quality between the 2 and q times within a minute of each other.
honestly it feels like sPvPers are being punished. “if you want to pvp then you have to stand around and do nothing until its your turn.” WvW and PvE don’t have to deal with it at all. And the reasoning below is just backwards imo.
If you can queue from anywhere, what happens when the match is ready while someone is loading, in a cutscene, or talking to a scout? I doubt people want the match-ready UI to stay up for 90+ seconds while the slowest player loads and maybe decides to accept. We also can’t just give dishonor to people who miss the queue because they are loading, or watching a personal story cut scene as that seems unfair. These problems led us to the compromise we have now, but we are open to other options!
simple solutions.
1) if you enter an instance (personal story/dungeon) you should be automatically taken out of queue. and vice versa. the only cutscenes i have come across that are longer than 10 seconds are the personal story or dungeon.
2) why does it have to be 90+ seconds? 20-30 seconds seems fine to me. if i am killing a npc and cant finish it off before the timer runs out i need to make that choice. if i say “no” then i deserve dishonor and a short time out from queue. if i select “yes” then when i am done with the match i can retry to kill the npc.
3) the matchup screen trumps all, so if you are looking at the map it would be on top of the map. so it shouldnt matter talking to a scout or any other npc,matchup window goes right over the top.
4) so we are left with the slow loaders. i cant imagine there is a large player base that takes longer than 20-30 seconds to load. and if there is well that sounds like another issue all together. the matchup screen should just popup after you load. i have played other games were this is common place.
and since i am pretty positive the grand majority of the community doesnt take forever to load, why should they be punished with nothing to do for a small minority?
5) and honestly, what is “unfair” is those players who are waiting 30+ minutes doing absolutely nothing in the mists, just so irresponsible players don’t get dishonor for their poor choices.
6) or how about you make something to do in the mists?
the problem with mixed queue is exactly the comment below. the “best” team in the world in playing unranked and wiping the floor with their pug opponents. sure sounds like fun. and i bet that group of pugs sure does appreciate getting completely owned. i bet this will really foster a solid pvp community. from waiting in the mists doing nothing to finally getting to play to getting owned by a full premade. definitely going to keep people coming back for more. (hopefully you can detect the sarcasm).
if your goal is to try and force people to play on teams with each other, it could back fire on you. people might just move on to another game, one that allows them to queue and do something while waiting.
its a simple solution, dont let teams of 4 or 5 queue in unranked. allow pug players to have a place to queue against other pugs. its a fair compromise.
Me and my friend duo q in unranked and get vs abjured, what the actual f***…..
i guess playing against pugs is how they hone their skills….
I don’t think theres anyone enjoying the queues being merged.
It’s really stupid when you solo queue and get placed with 4 pugs to fight against a full premade and get smashed.
Or when you queue with a full premade, and smash 5 solo queue pugs.
you know whats messed up, i bet you alot of those full premades are enjoying the heck out of themselves curb-stomping pug groups. i really dont understand how winning 500-0 is fun at all, especially over and over again…but to each their own i guess.

normally i run a condi survival ranger which i do well with. but with courtyard/TDM being apart of the normal queue now, i am wondering if there are better builds to run just for TDM. any suggestions?

I’m sorry but I’m not someone who can “just ignore it” when I get a PM telling me “go kill myself.” Call me a kitten, call me a care bear, I honestly don’t care. That kind of stuff really upsets me for very personal reasons, and I know for a fact that it upsets a lot of other people, too. Why should we get shoved off to the side to protect egomaniacs who get their rocks off on hurting others?
i honestly feel bad for your generation (im not being mean in any sense), you guys/gals were not taught how to cope or deal with bullies.
and i agree with you that the behavior is bad and should be dealt with. but thats why you report them and ignore them otherwise. if enough people report an individual then the devs should take action.

if they dont fix this they ARE going to lose alot of players.
the only sensible reason i can see with this is to stop players from hitting cancel instead of accept when they are in the middle of doing something else. which honestly is fine if you get people hitting cancel. all they would have to do is keep everyone that didnt hit cancel together and find another player or two to get it going.
or how about putting in an epic jumping puzzle or something? and making it so when you finish a match you are ported back to where you were and not at the gate.
biggest problem i have seen in courtyard is that most players do not focus as a team. see too often a guy with 10% life on the other team and i am the only one still targeting him while the other 4 people on my team are after the guy with 100% life left. conquest builds would work just fine if people understood the basic strategy and teamwork in a dm.
plus, if you dont like the chat convo dont read it….

I understand that we’re talking specifically about map chat nonsense, but sometimes it gets taken way too far and sometimes it gets taken to PMs, too. I watched someone troll an entire HotM map for literally HOURS a few nights ago. Every time I came back from a match they were still there, still babbling, and people were just feeding them and adding fuel to the fire. There is a point when enough is enough.
its really really easy actually. if youre drawn to drama i could see it being difficult though. the only time i read chat is in a match or party. dont care otherwise.
and in this day and age if people still cant learn not to feed a troll then i really dont care if they are not enjoying themselves. block him, ignore what he writes, etc, its easy. like any bully/troll if they are not getting the attention they so desperately seek they will move on to another venue to get it. its that simple.
they should prevent people for queuing up more than 3 people in unranked. groups of 4 or 5 should have to queue ranked only. i think you would see an improvement in queue times.
i played all unranked this weekend and matches were better balance as far as score. still got 4v5 and lots of duplicate and occasional triplicate of a class on one team.
also, if queue times are gong to be that long in ranked, you really need to allow for people to queue up without having to go to the mists. 30min queue time without being able to do anything would make me quit playing a game really really quick.
GW2 has one of the best pvp communities in any of the games i play/played.
Heck in Tera the worst people are literally protected by EME even tho they spread peoples personal information around so they can be harassed outside of the game as well, hunt people in the game to the point of them leaving the game for good, and all sorts of other nasty stuff. Honestly, the Tera community makes LoL look like a bunch of saints throwing marshmallows at each other.
plus, if you dont like the chat convo dont read it….
