Thieves do awesome with small groups. you make your opponents nervous once you go stealth. not only do they have to attack your teammates but they have to worry about when you are going to pop out and shred their hp. they have some huge burst. a bearbow and thief could kill someone in a matter of a few seconds, regardless of class. plus you can stealth and rez your allies without them being able to stop you.

personally i think engi is mechanically the highest skill cap, if youre not good with hitting buttons youre not going to be good. (unless of course youre a macro turd). engi also has great synergy.

if youre planning on your wife being a bearbow, go with a thief or engi. i think they compliment each other well and the gameplay isnt mindless.

I don’t know what the player was playing (or if he was hacking) but I once played against a ranger who perma evaded (literally) 1v4.
If it’s legit, that’s probably the best roaming class/build.

condi rangers are not great in wvw, much stronger in spvp. power ranger does a little better overall. tho i prefer running condi ranger if all i am doing is looking for fights and not taking objectives.
engis shine in spvp but in wvw were just kind of average. you really have to play it well to shine but certain classes can counter you rather easily without being that skilled. i main engi, and love it in wvw, alot of variety and allows me to adjust for the situation at hand rather easily.
mesmers get alot of love in wvw, youre useful across the board. they are also not an easy class to be really good at.
thiefs are strong too, across the entire game. high burst and stealth (too much stealth imo).
guardians are another strong class in wvw. i dont play one but i know they are loved.

for my personal experience i would say mesmer or engi is what you are looking for. both are strong classes but also require you to play smart.

But problem is, that certain classes, such as thief, warrior or mesmer have high in combat mobility.
It’s not about swapping weapons or few traits.
So in melee, they can’t win against someone, so they’ll get out of combat but stay in sight, and with simple click go for full condi spec to unload right after catching up.
Only few classes will be able to do it, and especially those which have the handful access to Torment.

thief is a different story, personally i think the burst and stealth potential is out of balance with the rest of the classes. mind you not OP just not balanced.

and this pretty much sums it up:

All it does is encourages fair fights and you fighting at your best. Makes fights more interesting because both players are ready to fight.

It’s logical that removing gates from content makes that content more accessible.
The easier it is to switch builds the easier it is to play different builds, This PROMOTES build diversity.

I am gonna make a wild guess about Morwath and Lazaar… you both play Ranger…

general consensuses amongst experienced players is that rangers are an average to below average class. its also not a “noob” class, just like with every class there is some really cheesey builds that are really simple to play and will do well against newer players. really the only place they do well in is roaming in wvw and getting the drop on a solo player, and even then if you evade or interrupt their burst theyre dead meat.

Also as stated, you cannot compare this to WoW Esports. That just makes no sense. Reason it’s not Esports is outside viewers have no idea what is going on. No ‘big’ shift in events in their eyes. To us, yes; but not to them.

exactly the point. conquest doesnt make much sense to a random person. arenas are a simple concept to pick up on and therefore more popular with your random viewer. arenas are more esport than conquest by a long shot.
heck i cant even stand to watch the pvp in GW2, and i know what the heck is going on. i cant imagine someone who has never played trying to watch.

I feel like they might be sitting on it just because of the ideas that are already arising in this thread.. “Wvwvw needs it!” “Pve needs it!” “No they don’t!”

Now PVP can’t have it until we have a version that works across all game modes which isn’t easy to do…

Im about to write an auto hotkey script.. it feels like I can make a non intuitive scrummy version of this that works for only me in like 5 minutes.

pvp would have to be different then the pve/wvw template. for pve/wvw its just swapping gear not sigils and runes.

Because who need templates for PvE.

because that function would be abused by high mobile classes where they could swap entire builds(phys<=>condi) with one click.

i have yet to play a game with templates that allows you to swap while in combat. so i dont see the issue.

From what I gathered in an earlier form the problem was to do with they wanted to make a template that would work for pvp,pve, and wvw. The previous discussion with the devs make me think the coding is not the problem, its figuring out what needs to be coded.

well considering that your stuff already auto changes when you enter the mists its already setup to be 2 different platforms.
and all they have to do is start with the basics for the templates. all the frills can be added with time.

ummm coding for that isnt that hard. ive seen much much much smaller teams pump that feature out in a very short time frame.

My suspicion is that they basically have it for PVP only, and have had it for quite some time, ever since the new PVP build UI launched..

If you look through “We need templates” posts there was actually a pretty big discussion with Justin/Evan about what could be in the Template UI for PVP.. and basically people from pve came over and like yea we really need finishers and minipets, otherwise there’s no point.,,

Fact is population needs to be nerfed. I don’t even care how it would be done, but seeing some servers can afford having 10 man dolyak defending squads it’s quite ridiculous.

and people actually defend the dolyaks?

sometimes i see a whole guild defend one. 15 of them and it still died with me being chased to the ends of the earth.

maybe its an EBG thing, when i get on theres usually a q up for that already so i go to one of the borderlands.

Unfortunatly man you can test every build you want…but nothing will change. Ranger is the most broken class in this game. Other classes are more than decent and have decent F skills..whereas ranger…well it has nothing viable above all concerning survival skills. That’ s why noone wants it in guild vs guild.
Don’ t do my same mistakes…don’ t play ranger and don’ t test things on ranger..it’ s wasted time… if you want to be competitive Play another class.

Rangers are actually a really solid class. Problem is that there is 2 skill caps. one thats easily attainable, which gives it that “noob” feeling, and the other is a high skill cap that takes alot more skill and awareness. Granted yes its still not cream of the crop but it is nowhere near the worst. Condi Rangers destroy Engis, Power Rangers can wreck almost every class if they get the jump on them, they beat the heck out of Necros regardless of spec, and if the player changes their specs to fit the situation then they become very valuable solo, small group, and zerg. The latter hardly happens tho.

You sound more like a spvp player than a wvw player tbh. Which I would agree that in spvp rangers cannot compete at the top sans a few highly skilled individuals.

also cramming the newbies all together doesnt help them either. who are they going to learn from? other noobs? and then youre forcing new people who are more compotent and mechanically skilled to put up with nubs for 100 games? no fricking way. it literally took me 1 game to get with the flow, if i had to play 99 more games with noobs i wouldve never got into the pvp scene in this game. its a stupid elitist attitude.

Newbies who think they become “better than the rest of the noobs” in one game is exactly why they’re noob.

Point of Newbie Arena Que is to let “real” newcomers grasp the flow of PVP, and not fighting in the horribly unbalanced 5 v 4 spectator/auto-balance hot-join, yet not being brutally beaten by the more experienced players in real arena.
And this feature is an account bound thing, so no, you don’t have to go through this process every time you create a new character.

Forcing those newbies, who think they’re better than the rest of the people, even though they have no proof whatsoever, (“Oh! I win 2 games, so I must be good!” isn’t proof) to battle each other actually starting to sound good when I see people like you.
If you’re THAT good, then you should win that Newbie Arena Que 100% of the time right? That’s enough proof that you’re good no? If you can’t do that, and start complaining about your team being bad, then you have no right to say you’re more competent than the rest of the community.
(Also, this Newbie Arena Que should contribute to the classes’ champion win count, so people actually want to stay there longer to get more easy wins early hand lol)

Added note: If you already play PVP for quite awhile, please don’t respond on the behalf of newbies, since you’re not newbie anymore. This feature is created exactly for newcomers of PVP, so veterans have no place to protest for the system.

“get with the flow” =/= mastered, it means gaining competency to be a contributing member of the team. ive been playing video games since Atari came out, its not hard to become “average” quickly at any game. its not like conquest is some brand new concept to the gaming world. or knowing how to focus a player down. there is nothing unique about GW2 as far as game play goes.

each map has a slightly different playstyle to it. biggest problem i see with pug groups is they act the same no matter what the map is. a map like LoF favors a team that plays smart. running around capping and leaving is what kills pugs in that map. or the random guy who tries to take the lord all by themself. its not the map its the players.

This is technically a player created solution and its an incredibly simple one. We all know that since the genesis of gw2, population has made things very very unfair. WvW has been on decline below the t2 area. There is a pretty significant difference in numbers. A lot of people I know who were once are t3-t4 servers have moved up to t2 and t1.

Thats what I suggest the playerbase do. Stack on t2 and t1 and if everyone did it, then t3 as well. There is literally no point in having 24-27 servers anymore. The population is almost non existent the lower that you go. You may see one queue on a bl during reset night, and thats.

This is what DAoC did. They never solved the problem. They just stacked on 3 servers. Ye, it would mean queues again that lasted 30 minutes, but it would be better than ded gaem WvW. It would make the game feel like launch day when there was constant battling occuring.

while i agree that condensing the population into less worlds is ideal, i dont think people should give money to Anet for it.

    but to reach lvl 80 takes some commitment to figuring your class out. a new player isnt going to have a stack of ToK to insta 80.

Do you even PVP? That’s the worst idea I’ve ever seen.
PVE does not make you learn how to PVP
LV80 PVE noobs are everywhere in PVP nowadays…
Also this suggestion forces PVP people to do PVE contents,
that has nothing to do with PVP.

I already have a much better solution that I pointed out long time ago.
Make a “Newbie Arena Que” for anyone who just entered PVP.
You have to complete 100 games in “Newbie Arena Que” before you can participate in any Unranked or Ranked Arena. (To avoid leeching, additional requirement is that you need to win at least 25 games among those 100 games.)
To protect the Newbie Arena’s safety, after you fulfill all the requirements (100 games, 25 wins), you cannot Que up in Newbie Arena again.

Also, to avoid shortage of people, the game will be automatically started with any number of players currently in Ques(1v1, 2v2, etc) after 5 minutes of Que time.

With this, newbies can play around with each other, not being slaughtered by pros, and not being a liability to a normal team. They can learn the concept of maps, movement, classes, combat in this Arena with all the other newbies.

I used to be in favour of your dynamic map population caps, but I’ve been leaning away from it lately. It seems to me that the idea isn’t to punish servers that have more population by locking people out of a map until their opponents can field a comparable number – that will generally mean that people who play anything other than prime time hours could well find themselves unable to play WvW at all if their opponents don’t have people on during those times… and that is a real possibility once you get out of gold. That’s not fair to people who do shift work, or are stay-at-home parents, or any of the many other reasons people don’t play during prime time.

thats were combine someworlds i think would help. #2 doesnt work without #1 being implemented properly.

I’m much more in favour of buffs and bonuses to the servers in second and third place at any given time in a matchup, and something of real substance being granted if you have the “Outnumbered” buff.

Swords could be one of those – no white swords if you’re in first place, white swords after thirty seconds (the current default) if you’re in second place, instant swords (like it used to be) if you’re in third place. That sort of thing.

Or, you can’t waypoint keeps if you’re in first place and any already constructed ones get locked off, normal waypoints in second place, and contested waypoints can still be used if you’re in third place.

The idea is to never keep people from playing WvW (and dynamic map caps would do that), although I admit to still being in favour of lowering the current map cap down to sixty or so to see if that would unstack some of the population from gold and redistribute it.

im not a big fan of buffs but i like this thought process as well.

i thinking it makes a difference what your world population is. on T1 there was lots of defensive battles, scouts were posted so someone was there to cause trouble until the backup arrived. if you have the population the sneak attack was alot of fun. i could see how a low pop world would find it a kittenty thing. but that imo is the biggest problem in WvW, population imbalance. it would be nice if they merged the lowest pop worlds together.

also, i would HATE your idea, again its a misunderstanding from someone who plays on a low pop world thinking that its no different in a high pop server.

And a misunderstanding to think the other way around – that a “one size fits all” decision (like no white swords) is a good thing.

You want fun matchups where people don’t cry “WvW iz ded!” because they can’t find a tag leading 60+? The lower tiers have that. My own server just got up into silver a couple of weeks ago and last night (which was a Tuesday) we had a queue for EBG.

Granted, it was only a queue of three or four, but we’re the smallest (population) server in our matchup. And on our own forum, with very few dissenters, we hated no white swords. I seem to remember that, based on the many threads spawned here, pretty much everybody hated having no white swords outside of of gold in fact.

So in my humble opinion, the population imbalance you speak of could be fixed by ANet unstacking the T1 servers and distributing their population to tiers with a marked lack of population equiity. :-)

After all, gold as a whole is a minority compared to the rest of the servers! Ha!

i understand we are the “minority”. but you’ll notice i have never said what other people want, only what i want/like.
i do think that people from the low pops would enjoy a higher pop world. that comes after talking to people who transfered up and how much more they enjoy the game. but that is a small sample size.
personally i would like to see them do 2 things with wvw.
1. merging/combing/transferring the lowest pop worlds.overall reducing the # of worlds. close off T1 and maybe T2 for transfer.
2. make it so each world can have a set # of players on a map. and until all worlds reach that number it will not increase. so say the limit is 50 per world, once all 4 main maps are filled then the limit would increase by “x” amount for each world. (this would also depend on what the servers can handle for lag/etc. just throwing numbers out there for clarity sake).

and we are only the minority by # of worlds, not necessarily by player population. of course that is all speculation because we dont have a dev that would actually come into this forum and clarify it.
also, using the forums as an indication of what the player base wants is silly. i doubt even a forth of players ever come to the fourms.

Arena doesn’t work as an e-sport, it is too simplistic and too low skilled

If you’re talking about this game’s pvp then I’m questioning your knowledge of it. The game, with such build diversity, is so complicated that there are numerous more Bad players than good ones regardless if they have a meta build.

Mechanically there’s a pretty low skill ceiling (< not so good thing) and very low skill floor (< good thing). The good ones vs the bad ones is mostly because of more subtle things: i.e. rotating, picking right fights, reinforcing, cleave or stomp, etc.

I mean, mechanically speaking, it’s mostly cooldown management, efficient skill rotations and weighing the opportunity costs.

you honestly sound like someone who has never tried to compete in Arena games. 3v3 is a high skill cap, takes ALOT more teamwork than 5v5 conquest. Granted tho, i have only played arena in MMOs with your typical healer/tank/dps type game, but that just means you dont have to focus on healer harassment/killing. But in previous games ive played with arena, the best PvPers in the game, no matter the mode, was the people at the top of the arenas.

also, Arena is a whole lot more viewer friendly than conquest. much easier for your average person to turn it on and understand what is going on. i can barely stand to watch conquest and i know what is going on, i cant imagine someone trying to enjoy it who doesnt know the game. one thing you have to consider with esports is how your common viewer is going to understand and enjoy. LoL is successful because it is very simplistic and easy to understand. it also has the appearance of being a low skill game, which attracts people to try it/have dreams of being one of the best.
but at the same time, GW2 will never be a successful esports game. it is designed around PvE (and by customer base rightly so) and not PvP. It would be like LoL basing their entire game off of playing the bots. It would fail miserably.
i dont have hopes of this game ever being an esport, but i still want arena because it is more fun and a higher skilled mode. if you die you dont respawn, so you have to have great survival skills, you have to work to not only focus an opponent but keep the others off your back (its a small map cant run away), and you have to communicate with your team even if youre a pug to stand any chance. in conquest, you can contribute without communicating, being good, or even average. in arena an average player gets smoked fast and a team that doesnt communicate is a free win.

My solution to the Sneak Attack experiment? I tried it and saw how awful it was for my low population server and defensive play, and took a month off of GW2. If you don’t care about defense, I’m sure sneak caps against empty towers and keeps are great fun but they are horrible for the person who spent 3 hours trying to get a tower or keep upgraded and sieged up, only to watch it flip while their back is turned.

Seriously, if reliable and fast capping of empty towers is so much fun and what everyone really wants (judging by EotM, it may be), the solution seems pretty simple to me. ANet should build a PvE map that uses WvW mechanics but everyone is on the same side, so towers will never be defended by anything but a handful of NPCs that can quickly and reliably be defeated.

Population imbalance problem? Solved. Everyone is on the same side. Frustrated defensive players tired of spending their afternoon upgrading a site only to have it flip in a couple of minutes to a zerg or when caught off guard? Gone. There won’t be any defensive play. Players getting bored because the karma train has stalled on some defenders. Won’t happen. No more risk of unexpected death to a well operated siege weapon or defenders showing up to defend.

Nice, safe, and predictable without enemy players showing up to gum up the works and it can be perfectly balanced just like the rest of PvE.

if youre running in a zerg, nades and elixir gun make you very useful. long range and aoe with the nades. and the elixir gun provides extra healing and condi clears for your teammates.

rangers dont complain about rangers cause they know how easy they are to kill with every class (except necro usually).
i think most people who complain have never taken the time to play and learn the class to see how weak they are.
the only time in wvw that it sucks is when you have a group of 2+ power rangers descend on you running around solo and you get wasted by multiple #2s.

If we’re focusing so much on esports then:
Counter-Strike
Since I can remember, CS was always about
- plant Bomb = Win
- save Hostages = Win
You don’t even need to kill anyone from opponent team.

maybe if youre playing the most nub teams in the world.
you have to fight your way to the bomb site, plant the bomb, and then fend off the other team from disarming it. same with hostages, you have to fight to get to them and then fight to get them out.

if they made it so there was no points to cap and you had to defend/kill the lord and that was the only objective it would vastly improve the game.

Right now at the highest level there’s like maybe 4-5 teams across 6 continents that can compete with each other! That’s so bad and not esports!

No I believe that’s what hotjoin is for, there is no excuse for doing exactly what I advise them not to do because they’re clueless. I played 1500 hotjoin games before going to solo/team queue, someone should play at least 100 hotjoin matches before playing legit PvP.

I went straight to soloq when I started playing PvP. Took about 2 minutes into the match to realize what was going on and start contributing. its not complicated. if you want to avoid noobs then man up and play ranked. or do you not have 1500 unranked matches yet? smh

also, all the time people are kittening about the lack of people in the pvp community, yet every time there is an influx of new players some bleep comes on here and complains about them. how about instead of being a jag, you try to NICELY help guide them. that doesn’t mean yell at them to go to hotjoin and “figure it out” it means tell them nicely why you dont double cap home, what rotating between points is, focusing down players, etc etc. contribute to the community and you’ll feel rewarded when there are more competent players.

You Expect every player in the game even the new ones to have TS? I mean 10 or so in a zerg or so is the average in some worlds. 50+ around the map seems a bit to very unlikely in a lot of worlds/shards.

JQ has a TS. they will tell anyone who is in wvw for JQ what the info to get on is. i dont know your worlds situation but they make it easy in JQ to be apart of whats going on.

plus i dont think you should be able to see any of the enemy chat/emotes outside of /s. what about using the worthless report feature? theyre mis-using/exploiting a game function.

also, who said TS is free? hahahah….its not!

Siva- I right click and report them for what? Botting? Verbal abuse? How about Selling Gold? As you can see Siva we Can’t just right click and report them because we don’t have an option to report them for what they are doing.

I remember a time where there was much more dev interaction in these parts. I guess the toxicity however made them pull back.

and there lack of presence creates even more toxicity. instead of removing themselves from interaction, they couldve hired someone with thicker skin to interact with players. and then actually use that feedback to improve the game. (not that forum goers are a good representative).

idk about the person you quoted but white swords bring the zerg, not a small group. there was also more scouts and roaming groups during no white swords, which made small scale fights more common.

That’s funny my experience is that there where less small scale fights and more ktrain blobbing with the sneak attack event. I don’t know what tier you are in but zergs don’t generally show up to swords on a camp and if they do you lead them on a merry chase half way across the map wasting their time. I will repeat this one more time – stack might before you enter the camp and cap it before they pop.

I appreciate that you are interested in finding out more of what will be in the new map, but we didn’t show anything about it in the trailer that could lead you to the conclusions here. We’ll be talking about it a lot more and showing it off soon. At the least I’d hope you can reserve judgement until then.

i think you would have more faith from the community if there was more interaction between the players and the wvw team. i know people insult for stupid reasons (OP for example), but that’s out of frustration. a more interactive relationship cuts down on frustration and will lead to a better experience.

if its anything like the current EotM though it WILL suck. that much i will agree with.

I think it actually be great if they did so, however they should only make free transfers for the lowest ranked servers,

this is the right train of thought to me.
evaluate the current worlds active wvw population. make the bottom 1/3 free, the middle 1/3 discounted, leave the top 1/3 the same.
do this 2-4 times a year for about a week at a time. i think wvw would remain more balanced.


maybe even get rid of some of the lower active pop worlds and allow those players to choose a new world for free.

im pretty much convinced that Anet isnt going to be ble to get matchmaking right, but i dont think its all on them for the blame. every online pvp game out there has players who are bad and who are intentionally bad (time wasters). the bad players dont bother me and the system as designed will weed you out from them. the intentionally bad players are the troublesome ones and the system doesnt really account for them, especially since many of them have the capability to play well when they want.

ive been getting alot of people on my team that just sit on auto run. every time i say something they either leave (making it a 4v5) or they rant in chat and purposely die to the other team. the dishonor system has done nothing to deter this behavior.

i used to like pvp quite alot, but now i just do 1-3 matches and im out. if i get my daily great if not oh well, would rather enjoy my play time with people who try. WvW has been way more fun and is the only thing that i really care to sign in for now.

Do you have WvW badges and/or karma? Jury rig a celestial 3kit rifle set up with zerk, knight, valk , and rabid gear. Good for roaming and you can zerg and tower defend as a nade chucker.

STRONGLY suggest Toolkit instead of ElixS.

i used to run tool kit but dont find it as useful in wvw. elixir S has saved me and others more times then the block, tho i do switch it out if there is an unusually large number of rangers out and about.

Condi engis make for better roamers.
Alternatively build zerker engi with ~4 Soldier trinks.

Needless to say, your stats are all over the place.

how so? almost everything goes into power, toughness, precision, and vitality. i dont see how the zerker build is any better. only about 200-300 more power but significantly less everything else. a more assassin style build with added vitality/toughness, crits about 2/3rds of the time and has almost as much power and far more vitality and toughness. the trade off in crits i would think offsets the power increase of zerker. plus then you have 1000 more hp and 300-400 more armor.

and i dont find the condi engi style of play very fun.
