the one who dropped the golem should be the only one who can control it.
also, from the title i thought this was going to be about being able to kick an enemy out of their golem. like you run up to it and jump on it kind of thing.

GW2 isn’t MMORPG in terms of PvP and many PvP players doesn’t give a kitten about it’s MMORPG aspects…
in a MMORPG PvP is a MOBA
the core of the game is the same, the only difference from a typical MOBA is that you build your character from the ground up instead of having one pre-designed for you. oh and you have a handful more skills.
so honestly comparing LoL, DOTA, Smite, etc are fair comparisons to PvP in a MMORPG.
I think the play by yourself attitude should go out the window and they should encourage you to play with others, and not just 1 or 2 other people. Sure, I don’t mind you can solo everything in this game, but zero incentive to play with others, that’s just dumb.
the core mechanics of this game are the biggest hindrance towards team play. tank/dps/healer style games will always promote more team play than games where everyone can heal, support, tank, and dps…HOORAY!
arena will grow the pvp population
stronghold will grow the pvp population
all 3 game modes together will grow the pvp population
incentives and rewards mainly attract farmers and trolls.
a simple W/L system with no reward besides being the best of your peers attracts players who want to win. and this is what i think arena will atract.
stronghold will bring more pve players than pvp players. at least thats the trend ive seen in other games.
only problem with the JP is that every time you load in after a game you would be back at the entrance not were you left off. so if you wanted to complete the puzzle you would have to not be q’d. while it would be something to do it would also generate its own frustration. and i can understand why anet would prefer to load us at an instance entrance as its easier and faster on the servers.

there is definitely need for something to be done but there are good fixes and bad ones. plus with HoT expansion coming up we will see some changes, so lets see if they are positive or negative changes before we continue beating our heads against the wall with ideas they are not going to be implementing any time soon.
So no matter if I win or lose (in practice matches), my reward track progresses at the same rate?
Cause here I am thinking I need to do anything I can for wins (the 500 points, rather than the 200 I get if I lose) so I get more reward track progress.
If there are more people on at a given time, then their individual efforts matter less.
That said, this is a global game AND not everybody works or goes to school on a nine to five schedule. When I feel like playing in the morning (west coast NA, PST time zone) why should I be penalized for it? Same for people who work afternoons and get home at midnight and feel like playing for a couple of hours before sleeping.
Or stay at home parents who get in some game time while the kids have a nap or are at school.
Or when I move overseas, want to keep playing my game, but my daylight hours are different to NA?
This, as always, is a dumb idea. If you have dead times on your server, it’s ridiculous to penalize OTHER people for it.
How exactly would it be that you are being penalized? Given equality during prime time you would still have the advantage. I said in original post same rewards just less points. How do those points hurt you personally in regards to rewards? The poster who said night crews are more valuable is totally correct. It makes YOU-the night person-more valuable so I think the pots calling the kettle black. Your night capping everything with little to no resistance makes MY efforts mean less, I’m just looking to make matches better. I have to actually fight other people to get my server points.
sounds like you have alot of assumptions as to what goes on during your non playing time. and also, just because your world/tier doesnt have much going doesnt mean that others are in the same boat.
im on T1, i’ve played at almost every hour in the day weekday and weekend. i can always find a fight, and there is almost always a group that will come defend their stuff. the number of people might not be the same as prime time but it doesnt mean their efforts should be diminished any more so than someone who can play at prime time.
and not everyone in gaming is concerned with their personal rewards, some actually care about contributing to the TEAM effort, whether or not they get a shinny trinket matters little.
While I posted above to agree it would be fun, you guys should keep one thing in mind: nobody who DOESN’T want arena-style TDM bothers to post in these threads. So you’re basically shouting into an echo chamber and getting a seriously inflated impression of how popular such a gamemode would be. Let’s face it, if people REALLY wanted it, there’d be more custom arenas running it.
also if that were totally true you wouldn’t see so many anti-duelers in dueling threads. not that there isn’t some validity to what you said, but not totally accurate either.

their lack of reporting options leaves people like that to do what they want. hell i should of been banned ages ago for my bad mouth.
another thing thats not hard to code, you just add options to the already existing code. heck even i can write that code.

Reward track progress is not tied to rank points in any way, and has its own balance between wins, losses, and the different arena types.
Reward track progress is linear, and the same for all tracks.
Potions give a fixed amount.

No. But keep in mind celebration and birthday boosters increase reward track progress.

because gamers are notorious exploiters and hackers. the more info they have the more they are able to cheat the system. its why we cant have nice things.
Seriously you are in tier 8. Why don’t you get some players who need map comp, buy some superiors rams, omega golems what ever and go cap all places you need? If enemies are in tier 8 they can’t have lot’s of players. When i still played in normal wvw we capped stuff with 5-10 man easily in tier 1.

sounds like OP doesnt actually play wvw. try playing it and you sill see how fast you get those points. might only be a handful of ones would might have to wait until its your color.
one day people will realize that this game, and all online games, are played by people around the world. but until then we will see more of these selfish posts over and over again.
if you receive hate while playing your ranger, its not because you are playing ranger, its something you are doing. or possibly you just have bad luck with getting matched up with jerks.
0-100 is definitely not a lost game unless you already gave up. many games have been won while down way more than 100 points. dont need comeback opportunities, need a better attitude.

By point in “point farmers” do you mean ladder points or individual points? Ladder points work off of your team’s performance, so there should be no conflict of interests there.

more than 1 class has stealth options. thieves have to spec for stealth for it to be truly useful which means they are giving something up for that. just cause youre bad doesnt mean a class or type of skill is broke.
ill admit i thought it was broken too, until i played one and realized its not at all. sometimes i think people are under the impression that stealth=invulnerable. which clearly shows a lack of understand the game.
I will not be playing pvp in any form until this happens, ZERO invisibility. This mechanic absolutely without a doubt has ruined the pvp game for me. FLUX IT!
There system of detecting good players is bad, they need a player ranking system to tell whose good and not, so whenever I do go against premade its not me and 2 good players and 2 newbs vs premade (hence we lose, 2 weak links).
and thats the big problem right there.

To those saying you should only stomp or res, not cleave, I have two words for you: mesmer shatter.
I play mesmer and I love it when a squishy class goes to res someone and I just take the resser out as well. I then either res my team mate or continue damaging the downed bodies.
Even if we have a player down, I can be pretty certain that I can cleave a downed guy faster than a downed person can cleave a downed person.
In fact, the only time you should stomp is when you’ve got stability/invuln. Trying to stomp and getting interrupted and potentially killed is far worse than cleaving or ressing.

So I have been playing mostly PVE since launch and have decided to invest my time in PVP, and this game has an awesome PVP with a large player base partaking in it but i can’t help but notice how rude people are in the lobby, is this common or did i just start on a wrong day because i have not witnessed this amount of rudeness in my time in PVE.
one thing that is common in online pvp chat, if you are sensitive to rude and crude chats then dont read the chats. if you have the right sense of humor its funny, if not its off putting. the grand majority of players in pvp are friendly or quite.
Different kinds of players exist: those who prefer fair and healthy competition, and those who prefer fierce and unhealthy competition. The first are usually peaceful non-hardcore teenagers and casual grown-up players (which turn out to be the target audience for which GW2 was actually designed in the first place, with all the timidness of content, failproofness and cooperativeness in mind), and the latter are usually aggressive teenagers who are using online games as a sublimation for unsatisfied offline desires of being “better” than others, while not being constrained by offline moral and law limits. This usually leads to offensive behaviour, which can already be seen in both PvP and WvW (with as far as death threat whispers); such things are not tolerated in GW2. Open world PvP attracts the second type of players, and since many mature players already live a moderately risky life, they see their games as a comfort zone to rest in, and not a war zone similar to life, and want GW2 to stay as is.
I’d rather wait longer and have fewer games overall if those games are of higher quality. If I get stomped 100-500 I stop playing PvP that day because it makes me angry, as I’m sure it does for a large number of others.
how often does this happen tho? it only happened to me at times when it was reset, after like a dozen games or so it happens every once in a great while (at least for me).
I’d be totally okay with really long queue times if we could bloody leave HotM or have something to do. An 8 minute queue is only bad because we’re forced to stay in HotM and there is nothing to bloody do in there. There aren’t even crafting tables or a Mystic Forge, let alone a jump puzzle or anything to keep us occupied.
this solves the whole queue length issue quite nicely. sadly i doubt it will be fixed any time soon because of pride. not wanting to admit that an idea was stupid and pushing it on people is never a good solution. i really dont understand what is so hard about adding the crafting elements to the game while in the mists. heck add in some gathering nodes too.
Funny thing is, the guy laying on the ground about to die is blaming the other guy who is still alive doing damage and holding a point. The guy laying on the ground needs to get good.
your teammate just went 1v3 and killed 2 of them before the last one managed to get him downed, and then you finally arrive.
why does he need to get good? maybe you shouldve been there to assist sooner?
goes both ways, many different scenarios. fact is you need to help your teammates to win a team game consistently. unless theyre just really bad, then maybe them waiting to respawn helps the other team not score points.
i get annoyed when people dont rez or stomp when they have a down teammate. they try to kill them with damage instead. so many times ive watched a stupid teammate do that and not even get the kill and end up dying right next to me.
usually the only time i will criticize a teammate is when they are playing with a stupid strategy (like 2 people running around together capping and leaving) or not playing at all.
also, i dont remember quite how the saying goes but its something like the first one to lay blame is usually the one at fault.
i know myself and about 15-20 people who all feel the same way. not much for choice of quality mmos with player bases these days. at least the list for mmos for the next year looks potentially pretty good.
So, how the hell T1 managed to queue so many maps at so many different timing IF the population system is SAME for every server? That is like saying T1 do not have PvE players but we all know that is false, those who are here before megaserver knows very well how big T1’s PvE population is. Back then, the lower tiers are also rated “Very High” but their WvW population is so low and their PvE population is pretty much empty too, so where does that “Very High” comes from?
you want truth, i think there are a plethora of pve ktrainers in T1 wvw (surprisingly they arent just in eotm lately). every once in awhile i get really annoyed cause the majority of players from all 3 worlds are running around in circles capping stuff and barely fighting. it was bad last night.
most times tho this is not the case and there alot of zerg v zerg v zerg battles that go for hours (more common than the ktrainers).
kill anything that moves.
every once in awhile ill avoid them because the fight im heading for is more interesting.
but seriously if you go into WvW its fair game, there is no getting upset about it.
But think about the potential income of PVPers! We could take part of the population from WoW’s arena base who would love this type of freedom and skipping the leveling process. And bring back old GW2 players and convert at least some PVErs. I thinks a bit short sighted to just think it’d be fracturing the player base, when in reality you could just be growing it. Bringing in more players and ex players could do wonders for both arena AND conquest populations at once.
It isn’t off the table, and we have most of the tech for it. I expect at some point we will do it, just not now. I don’t know when either.
Edit: This isn’t a promise we’ll do these type of arenas, just my opinion based off of previous discussions with the team. We may never do them, or we may do something like them. Nothing is planned at this point.

my buddy the other day was asking about the game. his first question was how the pvp scene was, and his second was about competitive arenas. the answer to the first one got him excited the answer to the second made him stop caring.
10.7% chance of winning…wtf? Why even start the match.
These sort of matches happen most often due to fail-safes we have in place to keep queue times low. I would guess the premade team had to wait around 8 minutes to get that match, and they didn’t like it either.
I’ll continue to work to make these sort of matches happen less often. I don’t think we’ll find a comprehensive fix without sacrificing queue times though.
Anyway to allow us to know our chance of winning before the match starts?
I would like to quit while I’m behind and get it over with as quickly as possible.
just go back to pve dude. thats a kitten poor attitude to have. youre not going to get better unless you play against better people. “shake it off”
storywise human makes the most sense i think. plus human armor male and female looks pretty good. and you can choose things like growing up in the slums and wanting to be in the circus.
seems like if they were to monitor for say a month, not inform the community, and then base the population off the # of people who log into their wvw say more than 2-3 times a week for “x” amount of time. do it at random intervals throughout the year. and just never inform the community that you are doing it.
also, they could take the highest pop of their test and make the the ceiling for all worlds. when a world reaches that sealing it is locked. base the amount to transfer servers on how much space it has left. and then for newer players offer wvw leveling buffs or something for joining a world with low pop.

The guilds its referring to are the PvE aspect of the game.

PvP is nothing but a tiny fraction of the game, not heavily emphasized, that’s how most MMORPG’s balance it out, PvP 5%, PvE 95%, this game however has WvW, so I’d say 5% WvW, 90% PvE.
Just have to give it time for the game to build up to the guild wars.
We are going to go to war with Slyvari, so if you playing Slyvari your going to have a lot of enemies and there’s not going to be many safe zones for you in PvE.
Unless of course, you build up your faction by killing centaurs, Clan Crushbone orcs, bandits, Blackburrow gnolls, pirates, etc.
Enjoy being kos to mostly everyone if your playing a Slyvari.
good point i always forget to consider the pve side of the game. but then shouldnt it be called Order Wars? ;P
and if the rest of that is true then i cant wait! wish i had a better slyvari worked up then my ranger. might have to work on another class or wait for the new one. and excuse my pve ignorance here, but whats the point of killing that stuff?
I don’t think rangers should be nerfed. However, I do feel like rangers are polarized and need to be worked on to make them more well rounded instead of one trick ponies that they are currently.
It’s possible, just hardly anyone ever runs it. Dump 6 points into wilderness survival and/or nature magic, play about with utilities and have you a nice hybrid build. I see it occasionally in 1v1 servers.
hybird builds are great for 1v1, but as soon as you have a team or they have a team its useless in comparison.

I’m leaning toward the thief now, with my ranger as an alt.
thief is a good/great choice, but i wouldnt bother with the ranger. if youre a good player youre going to get bored with it. i think you would have more fun as an engi or ele alt, plus both of those take more skill and game knowledge.
a good way to get a feel for how the class will be at 80 is also to go into the pvp lobby and head east and play against the NPCs there (not the golems). all your skills are unlocked right away unlike if you go to wvw. i wish i had done it cause i wouldnt have wasted my time with my warrior and probably wouldnt have bothered with my ranger either.
@OP what class does your friend play ? and i would say that casual players like your friend are average in WvW unless you duel solo roamers etc.. you will have to learn to avoid people who know what they are doing regardless because they will always win vs you and your friend / wife. I suggest specs with decent mobility to run away from conflict with spam rangers. Necromancer, though not that high skill cap, is a very strong class unless your fighting a stupid 2k range ranger and can kill or force anything to run away in a 1v1. it is not as useful when outnumbered because it lacks mobility.

do you know if your friend is a support or dps style player? that may influence opinions, especially if he is going to play a support role.
engi and ele are both complex to play, and very strong, they provide support and high burst.
and i would think that a thief would compliment those 2 as well.
Its just easymode. Im feeling bad when im playing this because its so easy i would say its cheesiest build after minnion master If you learn to use terrain to you’re advantage , kite you’re enemy and snipe the targets you’re party mark its really strong. Its doing better on maps with less structures blocking you’re line of sight. I got champion hunter from sniping players with longbow using sword/dagger on swap its not a joke.
s/d is very very easy to counter, especially when that person doesnt now how to manage the animation locks.
