why are attacks that deal that much damage even possible?

my best attack single target is around 1-2k so how does someone use kill shot to deal that much damage?

i went from max health to near dead in one attack second attack after that just leveled me.

is this kind of thing normal? and should it remain in the game?

when aurora actually fight we do go all out, it’s just keeping up our numbers is challenging, we seem to have much smaller numbers than blacktide and gunners that make things interesting for a while, i think some lose interest at the sheer difference in numbers though.

i often end up with far more from an evening of wvw than i lose from dieing, unfortunatly last night i made a massive loss, couldn’t see a single enemy the entire night and tried to stay with the hovering commander logo and just tab target things, sadly we had no idea how many of us were there and died far to often.

we walked with a massive loss in money and very frustrated.

as much fun as it was capping the garrison with a 5 man group is just silly and shouldn’t even be allowed to occur.

yes it is, it utilises direct compute components not available in older hardware.

No. Directcompute is rarely used in games, and is available with D3D10 hardware as well to some degree

how do you expect to use dx 11 with a dx 9 card?

by using D3D_FEATURE_LEVEL. Many of the performance improvements come from changes in the API itself (Multithreaded Display lists for instance)

aside from that no wonder the game performs so badly on modern gpu’s when so much of what they have isn’t being used.

With cpu power to spare, this game easily chews up a GPU

direct compute is used in most dx 11 games to increase performance, some use it more than others but most do use it’s feature set.

dx9 does not have dx 11 features, sure it can be patched to have some elements but not direct compute elements because those cards don’t have the hardware to do it.

as much as you are right you are also just as wrong, dx11 is as much about the hardware as it is about the software layer interface, without the hardware to support it you will not get the benifits of dx 11 features.

you also won’t get dx 11 features on vista/xp as the os doesn’t support those versions, just as windows 8 will have a dx update that windows 7 won’t support because it can’t.

look if you want to argue this go play crysis 2 dx 11 mode with a dx 9 only card i’ll eat 100 cute fluffy kittens if you can get that to work.

hell go play the original crysis and try to enable dx 10 on a dx 9 only card and i’ll eat another 100 cute fluffy kittens.

you will not get higher version dx features on dx9 or 10, and when dx 11.1 comes out at the end of the month dx 11 cards won’t get those feature sets either, there is a hardware standard that has to be implemented for those features to be enabled.

if direct compute which is a dx 11 feature only and partially dx 10 though was pointlessly bad to really mention worked with dx 9 hardware we wouldn’t need newer versions of graphics cards if it was so easy.

of course it can get missed in testing, I think what bugs people is that it’s such a gamebreaking bug that it’s ruining the time’s when they do play.

my realm is now dead in wvw most transfered out, winning a supply camp is a bloody good day on my realm right now and trying to hold a tower is a blessing and thats on our own map.

we go out in a group and come across 40+ zerging us yet we only see 10-15 until it’s way to late, everyone says the same thing it’s not random it’s not like someone just didn’t notice the other 20+.

it’s not ruining the game it’s breaking it, less people go to wvw now at least on our realm and most are at their wits end with the other issues the game has as well.

if it was just a bugged skill point or 2 and the odd bugged quest then do you think it would be gamebreaking? this is a major feature and one of the reasons many got the game and it’s not working.

frankly no responce from anet will be good enough untill it is fixed.

i had to pay 65s in repairs and mostly for deaths i couldn’t even see coming, why should i pay anything if i can’t even see what is killing me.

game went from being fun to just plain annoying.

@ban sidhe

in reference to your gpu choices, avoid the asus 7950, due to some changes from the reference amd card they changed the heat sink in contact with the gpu’s core to a lower quality one and it doesn’t make physical contact either resulting in a bricked gpu in less than a month.

they are doing a revised version in due course but i don’t know when it is due.

no other brands were reported has having that problem either it is strictly limited to the asus design.

so if you see a good bargain on the asus model you know why.

some customers reported temps in the region of 130 deg before the card went and no amount of fans was going to help.

other than that enjoy that system when you get it looks awesome.

flashing them is essentially another huge number of writes to the blocks that they would otherwise not have had.

it’s the funny thing with solid state drives, over time the life expectancy will drop off quite alot, indexing and hibernate files should be disabled as should pagefile as they are all random writes to the drive it really doesn’t need and they all over time reduce the life span.

pagefile isn’t needed and if you have it enabled disable it, sounds harsh but increase your ram if your worried but 16gb of ram is more than enough to disable it on any system.

to disable the hibernation as it rewrites that every time you make a change, elevated command prompt, type- powercfg -h off

given your faults and the occuring errors when you run a disk check my feeling is going towards the drives reaching end of life.

current gen ssd’s can take a considerably larger number of writes before failure and the controllers have been improved a great deal as well.

the problem with the orr zone is the orr zone…

it’s hated that much that you don’t see anyone around ever…just a vast wasteland of zombies.

the stuns pulls cripples that you get flung at you non stop just gets bloody annoying after the 3-4 time it happens in a row and you’ve made about 6 feet of progress and the mobs have respawned in that time..

i actually like the map…just not what resides in it, not fun and not challenging just bloody irritating.

and i would consider trying to solo a dragon a challenge even if it was doomed to failure it would still be more fun than battling the endless respawning zombies in orr that cripple stun cripple teleport pull cripple you to bordem and tediously moving forward slowly while trying to avoid as much as humanly possible.

then you have to hope that not every sodden waypoint is contested, sadly i found that all the one’s i’d been to were contested so it was a 20 min walk/swim back to where i was having to fight the same mobs and rince and repeat what i had to do above over and over.

screw orr.

yeah i wasn’t being anti sli/crossfire.

but it is not up to arena net if it works with thier game, it’s entirely up to nvidia and amd if it works well or barely at all.

oh and the point of vram is to push high resolutions across multiple screens, 1gb vram will do 1-2 screens at 1920 × 1080 but will struggle with 3 at those resolutions, more ram means more can be displayed.

you’ll find the power draw in sli/crossfire is rather high.

to give you headroom as you may want to upgrade your graphics later go with at least a quality 800+w psu even at that you won’t get 2 top end cards working you’d need closer to a 900 or 1000w + for some in sli.

don’t cheap on the psu either i say this often enough and have to tell enough people that did when a cheap one blows their whole pc that they should have gotten a decent one.

amd are doing a product upgrade soonish which are suppose to be competative with intel’s current but they aren’t out yet, so i would grudgingly suggest intel as there is nothing really wrong with any of the amd cpu’s on the market.

benchmarks show the real difference and unless you work in an industry where you really need the best and 2-3 secs on a render make all the difference then you won’t notice as that is the overall difference 2-3 seconds it’s not like amd chips are rendering minutes behind an intel comparative it’s literally seconds and that’s being generous to intel as well, they have more support and a wider range of motherboards and high end motherboards which may be all that difference really is.

it’s an awkward one, sli/crossfire is not really that great in some games and can hinder performance in others quite badly.

try single card and see what happens, it could just be a driver issue with sli, but don’t expect drastic improvments above that with the second one plugged in.

you are relying on nvidia for those improvments not arena net so don’t blame guild wars 2 blame nvidia/amd for sli/crossfire problems.

one amazing single card has always outperformed sli/crossfire in games, in direct compute work multiple cards always do better but they aren’t rendering at that point they are doing math.

I sound like i’m having a go at sli/crossfire but i’m not, in some cases people have seen nearly double fps upwards of 200+, but that is all down to drivers and updates to those drivers.

check with nvidia see if they have any updates coming for gw2 optimisation in sli.

lets be blunt, the gpu is out dated and the game really requires an nvidia 550 gtx or amd equivilent at the least to perform well were talking decent frame rates here not ok frame rates.

cpu, at least current or last gen intel or amd, for playable performance, sure you can play it on older hardware but were talking enjoyable gameplay nothing less.

i have an intel i7 sandybridge 12gb ram an amd 6850 i’d like you to guess which item is not quite up to spec? considering they are all newer than your items and all better yet i’m not entirely happy with my play experience but then i’m realistic.

I know if i’m not happy with how a game is playing i need to upgrade my hardware, my cpu is fine and my ram is fine, so i guess it’s my gpu that’s not quite up to spec for what I want from my gaming, what i expect has nothing to do with it when reality brings you back off your cloud with a thud and says buy new hardware.

didn’t read the whole post? then here upgrade you’re computer it’s out of date and you shouldn’t expect better than avg fps from that hardware when so much better is on the market.

the minimum requirements are just that minimum being just above them doesn’t mean you’ll see some miraculous improvment in performance.

if in doubt when you go to buy a game take the reccomended requirements as the bare minimum to enjoy the game.

if arena net think using applications or programs designed to augment your gaming experience but not alter the game are bannable then they need to wake the kitten up, eyefinity and nvidia’s alternative are becoming more common place as are peripherals designed to improve certain elements of game play in all games not just guild wars.

not all third party applications are trying to hack a game but some do augment someones experience in a way that they enjoy the most and aren’t hacking or botting.

if they don’t want to support eyefinity then that’s fine but i see no reason to stop it.

building a pc for my friend for less than £600 including monitor.

Cpu – intel core i5 3570k £162 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Generation-i5-3570K-3-40GHz-Technology/dp/B007RUZKK6/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348938075&sr=1-1
A great cpu, the i5 is a quad core cpu running at 3.4 ghz with turbo boost taking it up to 4.2 ghz when it needs to, you can overclock it but why bother when it does it without any help, also it is covered by warranty if you do overclock it.

Graphics card – xfx 7770 £100 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Graphics-XFXAMD-Radeon-HD7770Double-Dissipation/dp/B00792VT98/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1348937019&sr=8-3
The new 7 series from amd, great value for money and amazing performance in video editing and games thanks to their new focus on non gaming uses such as rendering and video editing.

Motherboard – gigabyte h77 £70 http://www.amazon.co.uk/GIGABYTE-GA-H77-DS3H-Motherboard-Pentium-Celeron/dp/B007KZQFP2/ref=sr_1_8?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348937131&sr=1-8
Nice and stable platform for all the components, long warranty with surge protection built on to protect your attached components.

Arguably the most important component in the computer, corsair are good quality brand and ample power for all the components.

Ram – corsair vengeance ddr3 1600 £35 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9-1600MHz-Vengeance-Memory/dp/B004CRSM4I/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348937311&sr=1-1
Corsair ram is well known for quality and this ram delivers.

Hdd – 2tb Seagate barracuda £75 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Barracuda-inch-Internal-Drive/dp/B006H32Q3S/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348937360&sr=1-2
Need storage? Then how about a 2 terabyte drive for all the movies you will be making, Seagate have been in the business for a long time, this drive has a large cache and high rpm for faster read write speeds which will help.

Optical drive –sony dvd rw £15 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-AD-7280S-0B-Internal-Multi-Writer/dp/B0057FRTPW/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348937397&sr=1-2
Well it’s a dvd drive

Case – cooler master rc-430 elite midi tower £40 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-RC-430-KWN1-Elite-Window/dp/B003OEDJTI/ref=sr_1_42?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348937587&sr=1-42
This is where it all goes, cooler master have been making great cases for a long time, this case has ample cooling and space for all the parts while being not to large.

Monitor – lg 22 inch led widescreen monitor £110 http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-IPS224V-inch-Backitten-Monitor/dp/B008F7GVZS/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
A great monitor with crisp clear colours, uses less power as well as being quite pretty to look at, a low response rate and high contrast ratio make viewing easy.

Keyboard and mouse set –logitech mk260 £20 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-920-002997-MK260-Wireless-Desktop/dp/B004MEXYLM/ref=pd_sim_computers_1
A simple set but Logitech make some great products, other options would be a Microsoft set.

there you go, doesn’t include the os as i get mine cheap as a microsoft partner but thats a decent system, obviously you can upgrade the graphics if you want but thats a good base to go from.

note, don’t cheap out on the power supply ever it’s far to important.

all prices are current and links are valid to amazon uk, you can get some of the parts cheaper from the likes of scan and dabs but you may only save £15-20 and others are the same price but ship faster.

build your own, retail a pc with that spec from the likes of pc world will set you back close to £8-900 and only has a 1 year warranty each of those components has an avg of 3-5 year warranty.

the monitor is a low power ips led, with a resolution at 1920 x1080 has hdmi/dvi and vga for all your needs.

remember a self assembled pc will be better than a pre fab from hp and dell, the motherboards are better the ram is better and the power supply is far far better.

oh and if you want you can upgrade to an ssd for an additional £70-80
and don’t forget about the drive bay adapter if you do.

Windows 7 vs Windows XP?

the nvidia 9400m is a legacy device now on windows 7/8 and will use the wddm drivers.

If Nvidia aren’t doing drivers and your manufacturer isn’t doing updated drivers then you have to just accept that.

laptops were not meant to last more than a few years at best older laptops last longer due to far higher standards than current laptops, which is probably why your’s still works.

in any event you have limited options due to it being a laptop, you can’t upgrade the graphics or the cpu or cooling or the motherboard, so you have to either accept what you have and go with it or change to either a new gaming laptop or a desktop.

the issues you are seeing may be a result of the age of the machine as well which doesn’t help matters, gw2 is not exactly a light game and isn’t the best optimised either, and that’s obvious when a many with dedicated gpu’s are struggling for better frame rates.

Have people tried reverting their drivers?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: orlen.7810

indeed drivers don’t account for every concievable computer build, and user tweeks and changes, so some will see issue’s where other’s don’t for various reasons.

mathisk, the same issue as i point out above will occur regardless of driver version or graphics card brand/model.

the pc can come in so many different configurations that it is nearly impossible to account for them all so minor glitches can occur, which is annoying but just one of those things.

the rendering issue is annoying lol one second your alone the next your being rofl stomped by a horde of enemy that ran at your screen you didn’t see untill you were dead..not much fun.

WvWvW is my main game and is my end game as well so it is one of those issues for me that needs fixed asap, but at the same time i’m not investing a great deal of time into the game either at the moment, i mess about a bit and level slow and still have masses of the game world to explore..was never my thing but i’ll do it all at some point anyway.

i think some have burnt out on the game already, as they are the same comments or types of comments made about almost all mmo games by players that have played to much myself included.

i always took my time, with mmo’s and certainly new mmo’s as i expect bugs issues and problems in the first 6-9 months to be slowly ironed out i have realistic expectations on patches and fixes and i’ve never wanted them rushed.

that said 9 months of no new content would have me walk, after doing the same raid bosses in wow for months on end it’s not a position i want to find myself in which is another reason i left that game last year, pvp is the only game i’ll play from now on, repetative boss’s with the same mechanics and the same positioning every time…i’ll pass on that kind of repetative gameplay for the rest of my life.

Facebook is cleverly programmed but at the same time, it’s much like Vista. As a programmer, it needs an hacksaw taken to it. I avoid it like the plague as well.

thats harsh lol, vista wasn’t that bad. far better than people think, it got a bad rep because it was a hungry little swine and companies like dell/hp/compaq the list goes on sold them with insufficent hardware to do the job and thats their fault as they were told a long time before what the requirements were.

those that had at the time overpowered computers didn’t have any issues with vista, ran it for 5 years and not a single crash that i didn’t cause of my own stupidity.

I think the combat in this game feels very stale.

how odd, i actually like the lack of abilities, after years of wow i got sick of having 23 keybinds for umpteen spells you rarely used but had a reason to on the odd occasion during that random boss fight with a weird situation that demanded you use that spell you forget about all the time.

having a strict set of spells the way this game does it really is a breath of fresh air, there is such a thing as to much.

take pandaria, i pop on to the pre expansion patch…my pala has more sodden spells thanks to the talent tree, more i don’t know where to put more i could care less about, what with so many choices already for that odd situation you ended up running out of buttons in a set configuration that just bugs your happiness far to much.

gw2 imo got it just about right, sure i reckon adding another main auto attack type would be a good idea maybe something that has a slightly different purpose but no less potent would allow a broader game play choice but then thats just how i see it now how it has to be.

i play ele main, so staff (current choice) and 4 elements to choose from thats 20 spells which i often use, switching between fire/earth and out of combat air for speed/trap and water for healing i do fine and rather enjoy the variety of gameplay choices open to me.

but each to their own, some will be happy others won’t, can’t please everyone and there is no point in trying either.

@ delmarco[Facebook is really more about outreach to potential new players. There’s a bunch of social metrics built into FB that shows correlation between the number of Likes and Mentions which potentially translate into actual marketing for them. Emphasis of course on “potential”]

this here is mostly false, as has been proven many times now that most likes come from fake accounts for whatever reason(bbc news did a report on this not long ago and largely still stands to be true), facebook is a pain in the kitten for most people and others use it for all the wrong reasons.

facebook keep going on about how many accounts they have…i get it they think that matters, but sadly that doesn’t matter when there are few alternatives and so few even care about facebook, just how many of those accounts are active? just how many are actually real..and we all sit and wonder why they are doing so badly on the stock market…

but thats one view amoung many and doesn’t mean facebook is terrible…though it is the only place i’ve ever had online harrasment to which i resolved offline rather quickly, hiding behind a keyboard is the new form of abusive behaviour and it’s disgusting.

If i spend £8 on gems i expect to get a reasonable amount, at the moment you get roughly 2-3 gold worth of gems and frankittenhats no where near worth the investment.

the store doesn’t have enough items yet to buy, i’d gladly fork out cash for a light armour set that actually looked good the prophane armour set just doesn’t look nice and that is a problem, spending real money for cosmetic goods i expect too see some really outlandish styles not something that is worse looking than standard in game gear.

on topic.

level normalisation for zones seems glitchy and part of that is perhaps feeling incredibly weak having just walked out of a higher zone, but even at that i kill same level mobs before they reach me and in lower level zones i’m running around like a mad man because they take a freaking age to kill, being in a lower level zone is just more annoying than it is challanging at the moment, i’m not sure about costs though.

@echo

the gear you have is reduced as are all your damage abilities, not to mention the countless reports like what i point out above where damage just isn’t quiet right, you can have all the exotic gear you want it won’t help you a jot in a level 4 zone. traits and such stay, but again the damage dealt/absorbed is the same is it would be at the level of the area.

i’m not saying it’s broken but it doesn’t feel right sometimes and other times it feels fine, which is where it becomes noticable that something is broken, how can i be in a level 20 zone whacking away barely noticing the difference to a same level zone then shift to a different zone and have to run myself ragged for no apparent reason, feeling like i’m up against mobs 10 levels higher than me? there is something quirky about the whole thing.

i just wish i had time to actually check and see if there is a noticable difference in stats/weights and such to see if they are being adjusted wrongly in certain zone level ranges.

Melee useless in WvWvW

get a better commander to utilise your role better.

a good group of players mixed with range and melee can litteraly rofl stomp keeps and such as long as you move accordingly and learn when to sit back and wait your turn to beat the hell out of your opponent.

it’s all in how your group play they are perfectly fine.

issues would arrise if they became more powerfull however, if you give them more damage when they get in melee range they are op if you give them too much defence they become unstoppable in a good group and that causes balance issues.

in good groups now they seem fine, may need minor tweeks i don’t know, but they don’t do any more or less damage than ranged.

just one side of the debate though, i’m sure others will have a different view point, my post isn’t meant to cause outrage just a point of view.

Should this game have raids?

i’m ok with it i guess, as long as it doesn’t become the focus of the content and the game.

if i wanted that i’d play wow.

as i’m not playing that anymore i think i’d quite like guild vs guild.

bosses get boring very quickly sorry to burst most peoples bubbles about raiding being fun, but sindragosa was dire after the second time the lich king followed the same pattern regardless as did all bosses.

the sheer lack of difference from one weeks raiding to the next made it extremely boring and mind numbing.

but as long as it doesn’t get my money or become important to the game i’m all for it.

What does "END GAME" mean to you?

oo err, well i did raiding in wow which for that game was end game.

in eve my end game was trading and building ships and mining oh and hunting down that weee kittene that took out my hauler in week 2….. i got him in the end.

in gw 1 my end game was guild vs guild

in gw 2 my end game will be wvw gvg combat.

why does end game have to be the same for every game you play?

why so focused on one style of game play? the point of different games is to get different experiences not to supply you with the same experience with a different logo.

thats just one aspect though, your missing the point of guild wars then, guilds will be the ones that have commanders and will no doubt in due time be on the battle field with thier guilds.

just because the situation right now isn’t perfect doesn’t mean it won’t change drasticly over the coming months.

these things will sort themselves out over time as guilds grow and stablise and you’ll start to see guilds themselves with their commanders running around wvw and coordinating with other guilds to cap towers and supply camps.

but to expect perfection from the player base….is just crazy.

and also those commanders still want to play the game you know play the auction house, do pve and such they don’t have to babysit wvw 24 hours a day.

edit: Anet gave the players the tools to enjoy wvw, some will use those tools and others will abuse them, but those players are still people.

stopping to view the scenery

Hey everyone.

does anyone else find themselves stopping at times to view the scenery in the game? and no i don’t mean the vistas which are nice too.

sometimes i just find myself stopping and saying oo thats pretty, which i have to say is a first for me in an mmo.

with just how pretty it all is i actually want to run around more.

so thanks for all the nice eye candy.

i have issues with this as well but i think i know why.

i forget very easily how little health i have and instead of paying attention to it i think i still have 6k health (lvl 52) when i only have a few hundred. i know it should be relative to in terms of damage but it doesn’t feel that way sometimes.

it’s one of the few things i think should be tuned a smidge, i’m kinda benched on the whole thing i don’t really like it but i can see why they did it, i’m just not sure i agree.

one of the reasons you deck yourself out in amazing gear is to well feel amazing like you’ve accomplished something yet this sometimes feels like your not achieving those goals, understandbly thats just one way to look at it and i like to try to see it from a different point of view at times as well.

a reason i like it though is that it presents a constant challange, but thats providing the players don’t see it as a constant chore which is just as possible.

I wish trion and Rift all the best, but sub based games are going out the door sharpish.

if other mmo’s of high quality like Gw2 go free to play as well then those sub based mmo’s are in for a bad day.

Eve is by all accounts one of the only games that would sail through such a shift due to the dedicated player base and methods of payment already in game.

err i checked, and the rates seem fine.

pretty sure we pay the same as the americans or close enough to not make me care a jot.

i’m sure thier is some elaborate equation to work out the value per region that makes sence to someone.

wait a minute, you want to try to make sense of the economy in gw2 after 1 month of being live….am i the only idiot that sees this as a pointless endevour?

5-6 months down the line this will still happen but the effects will be less when there is more money in the players pockets.

1 year down the line this will still happen…same with all mmo games, and the effects will be lessoned still due to increased money in players pockets.

Massive Overheating?

Like Gadzooks suggested, I too have been using the frame limiter option. My gtx 670’s were running in overdrive giving me 140+ fps in some areas, were using over 100% power and running close to 70 degrees and thats with 5 case fans at turbo setting.

Now, with frame limiter set at 60, they use only around 30-40% power and hang around 40-45 degrees and I can set my case fans on cruise without any kind of heat building up.

For some reason my cards go completely nuts without the limiter and so far GW2 is the only game that does that. Also, vsync for some reason didn’t give me the same effect, so I would definitely try out the frame limiter option.

some peeps with nvidia cards reported the same issue in swtor, granted they have always run a few deg hotter than amd cards but not by as much as some are reporting.

nvidia and amd both did investigations into cards being bricked by that game, and they did find a fault in the game code that was causing something that shouldn’t be happening.

they both patched their drivers to prevent it. and thats about all i can remember regarding that issue it was a while back now.

just ran wvw for the sake of debate using the above listed system specs, maxed settings on the 6850, using fraps to get a real time fps count.

in combat was always above 40 fps.
out of combat was above 100 fps.

it’s not the gpu at fault here, unless it’s broken xd.

using the same card here, with an i7 2600 12gb ram, i can report no issues.

fps does drop during wvw when i see 30+ storming a gate but not that badly usually around the 20-25 region with high settings.

does this worry me? nope
my solution…ordered a 7950 3gb

if my hardware can’t do it i’ll upgrade it.

thats the point of the pc, you move with the times or get left behind.
