Dreamer Short Bow

The dreamer short bow has by far the best attack "trail’ or w/e you would call it. However, it is also sorely lacking in other areas. It really needs rainbow footsteps or a cat/unicorn to come out from your footsteps. Something like that would complete the look of the bow. It’s one of the few legendaries (the other also need some added visuals) that only have 1 special animation. Things like twilight and sunrise have 3. the swinging trail, and the trail following you (kind of the same but you don’t get the same passive trail with any of the ranged legendaries) and the foot steps.

nope, I know how broken equipment works so if it was broken I would have realized that’s the case. Every time I noticed myself going down in 2 ticks and feeling it was weird was when it was intact.

sounds like that would make soloing him very easy with a ranger as long as you stay at range.

Also I love how every Lupi solo post now consists of 1/2 page of congrats and the rest turning into an “I wonder what’s going to solo him next” kind of thread

That’s not true. This table has been true since agony came out. The only blatant agony-related change was the cap at 50+.

There is a bug sometimes where your AR won’t count; simply take off and reequip the item to get the bonus. Make sure your bonus is what it should be before every boss (can check in stat panel).

That could be the case, never really look at it but it’s weird that it would happen to me like that multiple times… Stranger things have happened, esp with my crap luck.

Kind of bored, help me brainstorm

So I’ve done pretty much everything there is to do in this game so I tried to venture out and move on. Turns out, this game is top notch and most other games just don’t hold up. So, I need your guy’s help to keep me busy :P

I’ve been doing some solo challenges recently but can’t think of much else to try and solo that would be fun.

I’ve done arah and coe already so those don’t need to be mentioned. I’ve tried champ karka but I have no clue as to what it does so I fail horribly there. So… is there anything any of you guys would want to see a thief try to solo? Easier to do these things when you have a plan

i would really hope this month they add /more thing to fotm is been 3+ month since they do anything but nerf drops rate and stuff to fotm

they also buffed agony damage. Not conspiracy here, they actually buffed it. Proof is when I first got 30ar and did frak 48, I could just barely survive 3 ticks of agony at maw (with or without healing, still went down up on 2nd, down on 3rd). A while back I noticed I was going down on the 2nd tick instead of the 3rd with 30 ar. Needless buff imo.

Stuck on phase 3, having a really hard time escaping the bubble when it gets me. I’ll get there soon though!

Always felt that if the ranger used main hand axe along with sbow it would make p3 significantly easier. Kiting with chill should make circling him less of a pain. Other than that I have no idea. Don’t play a ranger enough to be able to give any class wise tips.

Yea I just don’t understand how people can play a passive thief while in combat. IMO, if you want passive, play a ret guardian or bomb engi. Always tank, never die, always boring.

Please pay attention and read my post carefully. I said that healing can be traited with condition removal on all classes and that is fine, stealth is powerful enough as it is and it should be not linked with the 2. All the other classes that have stealth do not have the healing and removal conditions while stealthing. It is laughable because the thieves spend more time stealthed than anything else. How would you like all the other classes to regenerate and remove conditions (every 3s) solely as a bonus for not being stealthed?
Stomping while invisible is an exploit because it negates the downed state if that wasn’t the case all the classes would be able to do the same thing and the downed skills that require a target would be removed from game.

In your 1st paragraph you just explained all d/d eles, all in kit engis and all necros. In your 2nd then by that logic engis elixir s, ele mist form, mesmer f4, and all aegis should be removed from the game just because it makes downed skills not be able to do anything to the non-downed opponent.

Just because you can’t see the thief doesn’t make them invulnerable, they still eat all the damage you are throwing out there. Don’t see the problem.

Now please read all the points in my post and take a good long look at the other classes before you look at 1 class’s mechanic and rush to the nerf logic just because other classes can’t utilize it as well.

You do realize that the added second was a lesser nerf than what they were going to do to stealth right? They were about to make stealth cast revealed every time it went down regardless of how you come out of it. Massive thief QQ changed their mind.

Actually, I like to believe this happened:
Anet tried to nerf Stealth, but it stealthed up and Anet missed. They went off in a different direction and stealth got away with minor injuries. Stealth is so OP it can escape the nerf bat!

I very VERY much so feel that this stealth change is insanely worse than revealed on stealth exit. Just be aggressive and use the stealth attack then you’ll never feel like you were nerfed. And if you need to be invis for longer, use other stealth skills to keep the stealth uptime up longer

I will start saying that I have a thief among other 4 level 80 characters and I see two problems:
One problem is stomping while invisible which I think is an unintended exploit because it renders the downed state useless. The other problem is the traits shadow embrace and rejuvenation which link stealth with healing and removing conditions as well. There is no other class that can do that, healing and condition removal can be trait linked to each other but stealth is a powerful skill which should stand alone.

Ele – Cleanse condition when attuning to water, heal when attuning to water, heal when dodging when attuned to water, have condition cleanse and healing abilities when attuned to water, gain pretty much all boons when aura’ing, the cantrips traits, etc.

Guardian – Remove a condition with shout (to many around you, also Rune of Soldier), altruistic healing, many many heals and condition removers, I know there’s a lot more but I don’t play guardian so I don’t know them.

Warrior – Shouts heal, shouts remove conditions (Rune of Soldier), banners give regen, I know there’s more but I rarely play warrior.

Necro – Death shroud removes condition, heal in an aoe when leaving death shroud, 9k base heals when using death shroud 4, stability on death shroud, extra health bar on death shroud, wells heal, wells give protection, wells remove conditoins, minions heal, minions remove conditions, etc.

Engi – Turrets, elixirs, and kits… nuff said.

Ranger – Pet takes away conditions, massive water aoe that cleanses conditions… honestly can’t think of anything else, Soldier rune for shouts remove conditions… I mostly just play my thief over all my other classes :p

Mesmer – null field and illusions/phantasms grant regen, summon illusions/phantasms removes conditions, summon illusions/phantasms grant regen.

Now exactly how is thief cleansing a condition when going stealth so super unique that no other class has it? Btw, healing in stealth makes the thief take 30 points into shadow arts which limits their build. Not saying 30 into sa is bad, just that there are better options out there.

Also I lol’d at invis stomping! What a joke that you brought that up, seriously. There’s this thing called stability (that the thief doesn’t have access to outside of 1 elite skill (that you can’t stomp while using and it breaks stealth)) and another called invulnerability (thief also doesn’t have access to this) that make stopping the stomp impossible. Necros, guards (both also get autos that channel though the invis), and a well timed war or engi can all interupt the stomp while we’re invis. Your friends can also come and save you with their aoe cc skills. Vs a war, guard, necro, ele, engi, ranger or mesmer, you CAN NOT POSSIBLY STOP THE STOMP aside from blinking or running away.
Now how is stealth stomping an exploit?

What the hell are you all complaining about? Perma-stealth, so the only class that can remain hidden from sight for the remainder of the day, still quite OP in my humble (ranger) opinion..

If we had 1500 range (or even 1200 range) I’d agree with you. As it is though, we need to get in very close before we can do anything significant. That coupled with the lowest health pool, only medium armour, and necessity to building damage over tank to do anything significant, we are in a bad place. Also you need to play another class over ranger if you’re wanting to make a solid argument vs thief. In wvw, thief is a hard counter to ranger. The only time they aren’t is in pvp (where the thief has significantly less burst and overall damage) and where the ranger goes bunker traps. Thief is almost ranger food in that situation.

The +1s on revealed debuff is still very much a problem and NEEDS to be reverted. It was a terrible balancing decision and failed to hit it’s targeted group of wvw and pvp thieves. The only ones feeling the massive pain of this nerf is us pve thieves. If you’re wanting to nerf wvw and pvp then leave us pve’ers out of the way of your nerf bat! We were in a good place before and now we feel clumsy and off-balance.

Each new piece of AR gear is meant to allow you to progress to further fractal levels, which have increasingly better rewards compounding with higher scaling difficulty.

So I’ve been doing fractal 38s and 48s (had to do the 99% res trick for that though) with just ascended rings and a back piece since I got to those levels.

In the past few months I’ve upgraded my gear to have an ascended amulet and 2 ascended earrings. That is 3 new pieces of ascended gear. Can any of you guess what fractal level I am still currently stuck on? YOU GUESSED IT! Fractal 48!… wait a minute… that doesn’t sound right

I guess it’s a good thing that I can now survive 48 maw in the downed state without any guardian book or warrior shouts… Hold on a minute here! I also could still do that back when I only had 35 ar and could still use my consumable healing seed pod! So sad

GL and colorblindness

I’m assuming the op is red-blue colour blind (meaning they look the same I think, pretty sure it’s similar to our green, forgive me if I’m wrong). The burning animation won’t stop distorting his screen just b/c he/she doesn’t see the colour the same as most people, he’ll just have the distortion look different… still there.

Worst part is, if the colour patterns are the same as league of legends, then people for that type of colour blindness will see ally and enemy aoe circle as the exact same colour. No advantage here.

yea these guys basically got it spot on. If you can’t see the circles (i feel for you), then you’re going to have to melee him and use 3 regular dodges or 1 dodge and 1 big dodge (like warrior gs 3, thief roll or withdraw) or just negate all the damage altogether with something like warrior shield, guardian block while healing, focus 5 works good but shield 5 is pretty much designed to be anti lupi, same with mesmer feedback, and anythign elementalist. I know there’s more but you get the jist of what i’m trying to say

@randomfightfan, I see what you mean in that video. It’s interesting you went full acrobatics and trickery rather than DA and SA. I hardly ever use mug so I was actually considering going 0/30/30/10/0 instead, I was afraid I’d lose out on the damage output but seeing your video I think I’ll be ok. One thing though, how important is it to have 50% critical chance? With the gear I have in mind I’ll probably only have 30% crit chance, maybe 35 ish with food and buffs

Going 30 into acro was a mistake, should have only went 15. General pve build is 10-30-20-0-10 (wish I could have 15 into acro there but everything else is just too kitten good to give up) for the insane ini recovery, damage, condi removal, and b/c of how well it synchronises with my play-style.

General pvp is 10-30-10-15-5 when I’m going power… it’s also amazing.

Gear wise, thief is amazing at using offence as their defence so if you can play the class well then you should be going zerker. If you can’t take advantage of their skills and traits to the fullest then you might want to go soldier. Thief can go in, burst something really low, really fast, finish it, then get out. If they don’t finish it then they have enough defensive abilities to keep them safe in the fight for a very long time. If they run out of defensive abilities then the target is either really low or else you messed up. Either way, you can either finish them fast or get out with a good stealth. Also, if you use an aggressive stealth, odds are it will win you the fight here.

Another big thing to take into account is if you only have 30% crit chance, you won’t be proc’ing all those amazing on crit things that thief loves using. Flame blast aoe won’t go every 10s, life steal on crit won’t be all the time, any on-crit traits won’t be going off as often as usual. It’s up to you though. Different play-styles for different people.

@randomfightfan, can u elaborate a bit more about how you would control a fight while avoiding damage? I’m defn taking too much hits with sword mainhand.

pistol 5 to blind groups, kite around melee so you can always be hitting them but they never touch you (due to perma cripple), clever use of sword 2 (if you want to see what I mean by that then watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye85Ad4LJqY ). If you can stand the horrible feel of s/d 3, you can do pretty decent dmg with it in a spike… although you actually lose out on dps when you use it b/c the disgusting cast time, it’s main use is for the dodge and boon strip. Sword pistol 3 can also keep a target nearly perma stunned while also evading during the entire dmg portion of the ability. If you’re using dagger off-hand, the stealth attack strike blinds if u hit from the front and dazes from behind.

If you’re in a dungeon, there’s no better class than thief (finish reading the line) and no better weapon combo that sword pistol for defiance stripping or sword dagger for boon stripping.

if you want high burst dmg, don’t use sword. Sword does deal high damage but it’s a control weapon, not a damage weapon. you use it for the aoe cripples, the immobilizes, stuns, blinds (stealth attack or pistol 5), and dazes. The best part of this weapon is that it doesn’t matter which off hand you use, you will be getting more utility and control.

Gear check is the cheapest and laziest way to create difficulty. In a game that advertised itself on having skill-based combat it’s pure lame-sauce. I know ArenaNet can do way better than creating gear checks, so why they don’t, I dunno…

The devs have also said they didn’t intend for players to reach the higher levels of fractals. Most of the players doing this exploited bugs, AI and mechanics to bypass things they weren’t intended to bypass. They intentionally designed the Jade Maw to wipe people at a certain level. They don’t want you going higher than that, not yet.

Terrible mechanic is terrible. Nothing should ever be built with the purpose of making teams fail, no matter how good they are. It’s straight up stupid.

Also the devs not intending someone to get that far? WHO CARES! Such thing as pleasant surprises. Sure getting there with exploits sucks, but for teams that are genuinely good enough to make it that far legitimately, they deserve their reward. Clean up the exploits and let the good players be rewarded for being good enough to beat near impossible content.

Just run, don't fight...

Annoing is that when you run from trash and when you must run back you always have problem with that. When dungeon is cleaned you don’t have that problem.

what problem?

Solution 1. Don’t die, won’t have to run back.

Solution 2. Don’t suck at running (this includes using your dodges and skills), you won’t have a problem getting to the end anymore.

Solution 3. Play a thief or have a thief friend, running is never a problem ever again.

I seriously don’t understand why people complain about running. The response I get back almost every time is “When we die, we won’t be able to make it back because we won’t be able to make it back through the mobs”…

So dissecting that line I’ve determined that
1. The player is horrible and will probably hold the party back during the fights because they are assuming they WILL die and the party WILL wipe.

2. They don’t have the confidence of running through the pack on their own. This is probably due to them being overly reliant of someone else taking the hits and agro from them or else, with their lack of timing and dodging, they will die. Running solo and running as a group has no difference to anyone who can run effectively except that in a group, other people may draw aoes and agro on top of you or you may die trying to save someone else.

I know there are people who don’t fall under those 2 categories. For those people you should find other like minded people who want to clear for the sake of taking up the time and w/e reason you feel like using that day.

Now lets put this into another setting to help you see our opinion. When you’re 100% map/world completioning, do you kill EVERY mob you see or do you run past some to grab that vista/poi/wp/what ever?
Even you’re gathering do you clear all the mobs around or do you tank a few hits while you gather then move on?
When you’re walking around solo in wvw, do you initiate a fight against every straggler or zerg you happen to pass by?
When you’re in a zerg in wvw and you’re walking through a forest full of mobs (not people), do you commit genocide against all the harmless forest creatures or do you leave them alone and go take the castle?

Tldr~ Please stop forcing a minorities opinion on the masses, trying to change an important part of this game. Some of us enjoy the dungeons for the boss fights and the end rewards. Please don’t try to force us to do trash content just because you don’t want to do something that all the other members of the group have already decided to do.

Need something better than Jade Maw

As of now, Jade Maw is a joke fight. The worst part? The joke isn’t even funny.

The boss isn’t a skill or dps or intelligence check, it’s a freaking gear check. You’ve already beaten all the hard content, now the only thing stopping you from getting your reward is this giant octopus stopping you to make sure you have all the best gear.

It doesn’t matter how good the players are, if you didn’t hack the game to turn agony off at maw, you’re not getting the reward for all the hard work you did getting that far on fractals 50+.

Why isn’t there a skill check boss at the end of fractals? If you have to, just bring in other bosses from other dungeons and put them in at the end for w.e fractal lvl. It would at even help to keep the dungeon fresh. Something like current maw t1 fractals, ac t2, cm t3, ta t4, etc. Random end boss from each dungeon. SOMETHING.

End boss for 80s or w/e could be a beefed up Lupi that would be a real challenge to most people (something warranting the challenge a group of people who just completed lvl 80 should deserve to get).

I know these suggestions aren’t perfect but they’re a hell of a lot better than the gear check bs we have now.

tldr~ make fractals a skill check instead of a gear check by replacing Jade Maw with something that doesn’t wipe parties with the agony alone.

Still no forge recipes for ascended stuff

I now have both my ascended earings (1 guild commendations 1 laurels) and my amulet on my main. Real shame that I can’t infuse them for extra agony resistance. I was hoping to see if I could survive maw at 48 with 50 ar but I’m almost certain I can’t with the 40 or 45 (whichever I have). Even worse that I can’t move on past 40s b/c there’s no way to beat 50s.

I completely forgot about haste, the fact that it depletes endurance has always put me off from ever considering slotting it in.

not only that but also if you’re in a fight and you get hit mid cnd (happens all the time), the cnd will break your stealth instead of stealthing you (usually getting you killed).

Either take it out all together or replace it with something that every sa thief should use and put it on the passive bar. Either the 2 ini on stealth or cleanse on stealth or blind on stealth. Any would fit the bar and all would be 10000000000x better than last refuge.

All I can say is that I really hope devs are continuing to examine and test new ideas for stealth, and I guarantee they are. Whether the 4s reveal mechanic changes or not, we will still likely see additional changes to stealth in the next 2 months.

Looking forward to the next SotG!

thief class was the only reason I’ve been playing this game as long as I have. If what you’re predicting comes true and if it’s along the same lines as what we’ve been getting, I won’t be looking forward to the next anything. I LOVED thief since day 1. Now it’s getting a lot harder to love it when I try to cnd a boss after a full auto rotation and some extra time given to compensate… and still it doesn’t work.

To a lesser extent, final refuge was the start of it all. Just 1 other thing that should never have been but is.

they were meant to stop people from being near impossible to kill through clever (or exploitable, depending on how it’s used) use of stealth. Also yea, many other classes could have done it, just not the same way and couldn’t confuse the enemies nearly as well.

Lastly, that was just1 story, there were many others but that one was just hilarious to me.

not entirely true nika. If you have 15 points minimum into shadow arts (the extra 1s on stealth), smoke screen, hide in shadows, haste, and shadow refuge, you will be able to do the entire duration with max 1s sealth down time. That isn’t a problem because it takes longer than 1s for the only in range dredge to hit you.

Combo is : spam cluster on smoke screen, run in, hide in shadows, shadow refuge, haste (very important to do shadow refuge BEFORE haste) right before you press the switch. Your total stealth with the shadow refuge should be about 15-16s and the haste will cut off a few seconds from the pannel channel.

Side note, time warp does NOT help with the channel here. No idea why.

Now story time to add on to my point but def isn’t vital to the thread.

Went power thief in tourney. First thing I do is go and try to steal their creature/buff. Sneak over there and get the last hit in. They now hate me, that was THEIR buff. I let myself get down to 30-40%. Now they REALLY want to kill me. The 3 guys who were killing the creature are now chasing me. I bounce back and forth between them to confuse them, go invis, reappear behind them again. Shoot them a few times with my sbow and run to their spawn area. They all chase me. I run around a bit then they finally overtake me.

Meanwhile, my 4 teamates got our own creature and kept the other 2 points solid b/c they only had to worry about 2 targets total. Score is now nearly 100 to about 15.

If the revealed debuff was there after every time I break invis (no matter how), the enemy team probably would have been able to kill me a lot faster. It’s a shame how the nerf failed so hard but anet will probably never change it back because that would be admitting they made a mistake.

In pve I’ve felt that this nerf has been wrecking my gaming. The timing is off, the dps is down, and it just feels overall clunky and awkward.

In pvp, I don’t really notice a difference. Still just as trolly and maintains all of its strengths as before. If I’m in a hairy situation I can still spam invis and kite multiple guys around me, keeping them away from the points we want to cap and keeping me alive until my heal is up.

After messing around for many hours I can safely say that this nerf, that is supposed to help players fight thieves in pvp and wvw, completely failed at doing its job. All it does is completely mess over the pve players.

I should also note I spent several hours using both the condition thief with caltrops (still doing its job very well) and power thief. They are still strong and can still pull off their thiefisms no problem.

1/4s evade duration on death blossom

Even on a condition build just for the bleeds it’s nothing special really. At least for pvp/wvsw that is…

They just need to reduce the initiative cost and maybe increase damage or something so non-condi builds can use it too apart from the evade.

Nothing special? with 100% bleed duration and all my build going towards regen ini. withdraw, Roll for Ini, Assassins sig. along with vigor on dodge traits and ini on heal heal on ini use 0/0/10/30/30.
Self buffed i.e. none lol my bleed from DB hits for 118 per tic for 30 seconds….. again 30 seconds…. with caltrops and endless ini and end I can 25 stack bleeds in 3 to 5 seconds. Then the 30 sec DB bleed will take over after caltrops in gone. so 118×25 per second is nothing?

1 dodge to get out of caltrops, 1 condition removal to take off all those bleeds. I’ve taken maybe 400 dmg and now most likely have the advantage.

How to keep 4s reveal and happy pve thieves

solid point that I didn’t think about. I guess I was just thinking of having the possibility of being a very fluid attacker with each attack chaining the other. Since my thief is based off a water dancer, that would be why I would prefer another aa on the chain. It for sure would take away from the hit and run kind of game play though

Lightning Hammer

What’s the big deal about this summon? I wanted to see what all the hype was about it so I grabbed one with my zerker thief and the dps I was doing with that was significantly lower than what I’d be doing with just my daggers.

Is there something that I was missing because I found I was doing 2k regulars and 4-5k last attacks so about 9k over the course of 3s. With my daggers and against the same target I do 2k with double strike, 2.5k with wild and 3k (poison rounds it up) with lotus. I also get a 4-5k cnd with a 7-8k backstab after each of those rotations.

So now what’s the big deal about lightning hammer? I didn’t notice anything special.

Jumping puzzle chest luck

Just a fun thread on how lucky (or unlucky) you are while doing jumping puzzles. I’ve done at least 1 jumping puzzle per day since I first discovered them (about 1 month after buying this game) and always felt lucky when I got rares and orbs cause I’d never get anything higher. I’ve received a grand total of 1 exotic from all my jumping puzzle chests and that was some random 2g exotic weapon from the eb jp. I thought I was cursed. I didn’t complain about this because I really like jumping puzzles, it just confused me that the rewards didn’t seem to line up with the rest of the game.

Then days like today would happen.

Another small story first. 2 days ago I did 20-25 jumping puzzles across all of my characters and got a grand total of 3 continue coins. I was doing the puzzles with a bud at the time (who has significantly less characters than me) who only did 1 jumping puzzle for every 2 of mine. At the end he still came out with 8 coins. I was baffled.

Today I did 8 jumping puzzles and somehow came out with 6 coins (5 in a row) and 2 rares.

I think it’s funny that you can have such terrible luck with this rng game but have it all come full circle to give you your long lost rewards.

So my question is what has your luck been like with jumping puzzles in this game and whether or not you still have fun going after the chest at the end of the tunnel.

Please Jeff don’t post things like that without actually reading the op’s points.

I have had the same problem. Today I did the Megadestroyer in mount maelstrom. I was on my lvl 80 thief and this was the very first time I’ve done this event since I first discovered that event when doing world completion (maybe 3 months ago). I still didn’t get a daily chest and the regular chest that drops on the ground didn’t contain anything above a green.

This is a very real issue so please don’t sweep this under the rug because you posted something about the player needing to be lvl 40+ to get the chest.
