The smaller the game mode the less ppl can complain that losing is not their fault. Naturally ppl will flock to the larger “zerg” type play because there is less chance for their faults to be in the open.
This was the reasoning for hot join originally being 8v8. It is more beginner friendly.
As for rewards, spvp ideally would be almost a separate game entirely where rewards are obtained after a while of only doing spvp. Such as ranks unlocking different gear and /rank emote finishers. A player who only does spvp will see rewards in the game differently than a wvw or pve’r
Unfortunately it seems this concept is not being realized. Or it is simply not enough to overcome the casuals getting their feelings hurt in 5v5
There are no features to push people to form actual teams. Yet.
This pretty much sums it up, imo.
For the hardest of the hardcore, they have no problem shelling out tickets for QPs that mean nothing. They play for competitions sake.
But even casual-core or normal competitive players need to be led somehow via in-game content to take the leap into tpvp.
Quickness and on a stationary opponent.
I fail to see the point
I play a thief.
Thieves OP as kitten. I am not a “super awesome pro gamer hell yea I always win because i’m awesome!!” gamer.
I tear it up in WvW w/ that thief. I can engage any sized group of people, and 99% of the time make it out alive. I am the fastest. No one can out run me. I am the fastest. No one can catch me. I solo WvW all the time. Picking off a weak person in groups of 2,3,4, even 5 sometimes. Anyone saying this “try playing the thief, you will see they are not OP.” This is bullkitten. I play the thief, and I own face. I have never played an MMO and had this “top dog” feeling like I do in guild wars. I play other classes as well now, and they are not nearly as strong as the thief. As much as I love my thief, I want to see them nerfed.
Anet. I am a thief, and I’m way way way over powered. Please nerf me. My good time must be stopped… for the good of the land.
So you roam solo, steal in and down a player in a group before they (prob bad) even know what hit them, but you can’t get the stomp off and blow all your CD’s to get away from the group as they rez the player in 2 secs. And that is OP?
k.
also @ this post, any class that is considered the “stealth” class in a wvw type setting will attract people to want to gather a large group of them and roam together as a super secret stealth gang. Look for that thread about 2 months back of the guy starting a thief only group.
i fail to see the point of how this means theives are op
Trying to sweep how crappy the invis/culling issue is with thieves under the rug by comparing it to zergs culling isn’t really going to save thieves from getting nerfed in the future.
Their not sweeping it under a rug, their saying that culling when not attached to a zerg doesnt exist.
Culling only occurs in zerg situations anyway, are you a zergling?
so it’s ok that thieves remain stealthed in zergs? wow, great logic there. BTW it happens everywhere in wvw. try again.
Actually, I have tested this extensively and confirmed by asking enemies after fights……5v5 and smaller fights experience no culling. If there is a zerg nearby though (near enough to be trying to load on screen) then, yes culling becomes an issue. That however affects EVERY class, not just the thief. You simply can’t see half the enemy zerg.
Culling IS a major issue. But, as I said, only affects the zerglings. Most of the complaints vs thieves have been in 1v1 roaming situations where culling is just a weak attempt at an excuse.
This.
The current incantation of the “single perma stealth” thief is one completely made up on the forums. It is a plague of the mind that carrys no actual relevance in game. It was created from forum mob mentality and allowed to grow because of the C/D thief spammers that would troll ppl from taking supply camps. THAT was the only time where a “perm stealth” (even though they were never really permanent) could have been linked to culling.
This spec during its prime helped give rise to this now uber-villian “perma stealth thief” who is never seen but must be there lurking in the shadows because, y’know, you read about it on the forums…
wait, wasnt the point of one of the resent patches to make it so that you COULD /rank anywhere in the game?
didnt even notice, im guessing it was an unintended reversion?
If their 40% you could kill them in fractions of time with other skills then landing 5 heartseekers, and have plenty of initiative left over to actually be useful because its 2V1!!!!
2v1?????
thieves are so op they kill someone 2v1 at 40% hp
?????
and 2 dodges MAX. that is the only defensive mechanic in the game. such a hard game because you can only dodge TWICE and thats ALL
qqqqqqqq
(edited by rmBossa.4621)
WHO GETS HIT BY 3-5 HS IN A ROW??!?!
i could dodge that even on my necro!
these forums… i dont even….
I would argue that the skill-gap is actually the gap between the average and expert players.
I agree with your assessment about the types of skills and how you can generally get away with “spamming” or using defensives without thinking about it. That is to be said of average players. I think for the people that DO know the proper timing and when to use said skills against specific class and specs properly, there is a large payoff.
I can’t think of a game where the difference between an average player and an expert (pro if you will) is so visibly evident and effective.
So if this problem is truly all you see, then you just might not be facing good players enough. I am definitely not claiming that I am one of these players, but I have played to the point where I have encountered them and noticed the difference.
There is def a reason to master your class and to figure out all the classes and specs you will come up against.

Yes, let’s remove a core part of combat because it is annoying to some people.
/sarcasm
Pretty much this. Downed state stops being so annoying when you stop considering it an add-on to how things “should” work. Downed state is an organic part of GW2 combat, and the way you fight should always take it into account.
You can no more cherry pick out the downed state from GW2 combat than you can make the complaint that “siege ruins WvW and everything would be better without it because other game did it like that”.
Using overwhelming numbers to keep up allies, fighting near NPCs so you can rally off of them, “special” stomps (stability, mist, stealth, quickness, etc) are all part of the downed state meta that is supposed to develop around this part of GW2 combat. They aren’t extraneous novelties, they’re how the game is built and supposed to work.
Was going to make a post, but found this ^
Agreed.
Just get in the habit of thinking of “downed health” as just another part of the health bar. Noone is dead until they have to respawn. (get into some spvp tournies if your having trouble with this concept)
Downed health adds a whole layer of dynamics to the gameplay, i personally dont get so annoyed by it and I find that ppl who do are just bringing bias from other games. IF you seriously have a problem in 1v1 because of downstate it is not the game thats at fault it is your spec or skill level.
All this talk about “adaptation” but what anet is saying is you need to “adapt” BEFORE the match starts. Is it more of a challenge? Yes. But we want this to be competitive right?
Example:
I run a burst d/d thief roamer, but many a second round match has been decided just because I had this option. I keep 2 bleed length% sigil daggers and a full carrion neck in my bags. Sometime in the early part of a match someone takes down a gate and returns to fighting on the points. Then later in the match the rest of my team pressures the other team while I go to the lord, swap into condition gear, make a few utility adjustments and then procede to SOLO the lord. (quite easily i might add)
No full glass cannon burst thief should be able to do this, but because I had the ability to completely change my char during the match I am able to fulfill this role. And then when im done switch back into my optimized roamer self again.
Now, if the team wanted to have this benefit I would instead have to gear full condition and play with it the ENTIRE time. You should have to make a decision, not have the best of both worlds all the time.
This encourages ppl to actually think and choose different builds and setups.
Most people have actually expressed positive feed back with the balance changes, to the tune of everything slowly getting balanced instead of sweeping up and down changes every patch.
And to have that on the forums of an mmo is pretty incredible imo
As for the needed additional content, they never said it was coming this patch. So while that may not be comforting at least you knew it so you could make an informed opinion on whether to stay or go.
I think anet knows they can get by for a little longer and so they will. Its business.
In spvp, a good d/d dps ele will almost always beat a d/d burst thief if they see the thief coming. If the thief catches the ele by surprise, the thief will probably win.
If the thief is running 30/30/0/0/10 with scholar runes, assassin’s signet, and basilisk venom with 100% crit out of stealth trait the thief will most likely insta-gib the ele.
TY
that pretty much described my situation spot on, though its nice to know im not a total scrub ,its not really encouraging lol
guess ill just work on figuring out exactly what needs to be dodged when vs them
what about specifically in spvp, vs a d/d dps ele NOT a bunker
I play d/d + sb glass roamer thief and recently have noticed Ive been getting taken down by d/d eles when my elite is on CD (or im saving it)
im assuming that not all d/d eles are bunker
GW2 of course lacks in game-modes and features, but those will come eventually, but the core-system of how you build a character is just extremely deep and is heavily underestimated by 95% of players.
THIS, this this this.
A lot of people lack the imagination to see the incredible diverse nature of building the character just because its not in traditional forms like skill slots, talent points, etc.
If you dont believe me then you prob haven’t gone through and read every single sigil and rune (6) modifier and thought about applying it for every profession.
I also think the combo/finisher system has yet to be touched by the playerbase
Also +1 for the point that this current system can even come close to a game that has been out and revised for 5 or more years, a lot of the “revision” comes from players figuring things out on their own in the same span of time.
face it, Arenanet did not just make this an expansion of GW1 for a reason, and since it is a brand new, separate, game— it needs to have the same amount of time to develop
now I wont argue that I think it is lacking in content to retain players for pvp currently. But its free so bringing players back shouldnt be too hard (look at LoL) But the core of the game is astonishingly balanced, diverse, and competitive and has a lot of potential.
(edited by rmBossa.4621)
You suggest to balance the game even more, but then you suggest arena style deathmatch….
yeahh, thats gonna be a problem
Agreed.
I posted for this a while ago, some people think that it will be an “all or nothing” mob mentality and this will kill 8v8 as ppl would only then do 5v5.
I argue that a good amount of people will still just do 8v8 because it is better for grinding glory/rank, but with this easy change 5v5 hot joins would at least be active enough to be a viable alternative for people who just want to train

just started up the guild for cross-server spvp goodness its been great for finding teams.
Join up if you enjoy spvp. having consistent groups is a lot more fun.
I completely agree, its one of several things that I feel highly discourage new players to try out spvp. (another being the complexity joining tournaments, or even that fact that the ability to enter free tournaments solo even EXISTS)
To me it just makes more sense to have 2 tabs within the browser, one that says 8v8 another 5v5. Likely the 8v8 servers would still be most popular as its the fastest way to gain rank/glory and easier to hide in a team of 8. But it would definitely fill up the 5v5 servers A LOT more then they are now.
GG all.

SOS has had outmanned buff plenty of times, i know last night we had it all during primetime EST. Though it was on SBI BL
Ive heard ppl talking about taking a break attributed to finally achieving t1 victory (long push from.. wait what tier was it?) Though not an excuse I think were seeing just an overall decline in participation in the game in general on all three servers, and all tiers.
Personally ive been demoralized by Anets decision to include PvE based top gear (treadmill) and as WvW’ers im sure you all can agree. Though ironically i think it may be the only thing to save this game, even if I do not agree with it
If one guild is that effective to do that to your server when they left, think about it from their side.
They obviously were carrying the server which means doing the heavy lifting, like PR to the “pugs”, commander tags, and spending the most on siege. This is a very draining feeling and demoralizes their guild and puts its existence at risk. Its not fair to them either.
My guess is the rest of the server did not put in as much effort as you may think or claim. So they moved somewhere so that their hard work will be complimented by others to achieve something.
I have a feeling the OP might be more right then we want to believe.
So many things regarding sPvP just confuse the hell out of me. Mostly because I see a game that is great for so many ways, but just off the mark as well. But this disconnect is big enough to bring the whole thing down.
I always get a paranoid impression when thinking about it, like Anet knows something we don’t, like some sort of marketing scheme that just needs a little more time to come to fruition.
But the more logical assessment would be funding. If the game development is split up between pvp and pve(as mentioned by anet themselves) than the parts that bring in the most profit will receive the most attention. Which would be pve.
Another issue to add to my previous post that I think would have an impact on the current state of the game is with cross-server play.
I think the idea of being able to group and chat with players from cross server is completely lost on most people. This is a great aspect of the game and in theory SHOULD dramatically increase the capabilities of a community.
But theres no real mention or encouragement for players to do this. Most probably see the (dwindling) number of players in their own heart of the mist lobby which then adds to the feeling that even attempting to put together 5man groups (pick up or consistent) as futile.
Reinforcing this idea and making it easier to group up with non-server people could help reverse this trend.
Some ideas would be a cross-server lobby or chat, which would simply just show this aspect of the game to its players and they could go from there. Or even some ideas from FPS matchmaking type games where there is a list of recent players that you have been grouped with no matter what server their on. Or maybe an accessible in game “LFG” type of bulliton-board where all servers can see and quickly make groups of 5 to then q into free/paid tourneys.
“looks like meats back on the menu boys”
i LOLd hard
well played.
I think in game communication of features is a big problem. We need the community to grow with new blood not the opposite.
Some things just straight out confuse me, and im usually very optimistic with devs.
For example, why were the 5v5 hot joins just thrown at the very bottom of the browser? I look and see that the only real full servers are the 8v8s at the top, and im willing to bet that a big reason for that is people just dont even realize the 5v5s are there.
Most of the player base either forget or dont even read a small blip on the patch notes explaining the change.
Another example is with the tournament browser UI, just yesterday I had to explain to someone who was obviously new to the mists how to join a free tourney. I suspect that most dont even know this much, to even try to solo join a free in the first place. What scares me is that while this guy was lucky enough to ask in /map, theres probably a multitude of other players that never got it, and all that opportunity to bolster the community with “new blood” is gone.
In conclusion, I feel that the actual pvp system is great— but people dont even know that it is there. And we cant just count on them to slowly figure it out, because they will just quit. Which results in the current active community eventually quitting too.
Remember for every person who is active on these forums there are hundreds that are not and must have everything spoon fed via in-game UI and announcements.
Probably the reason we are so jaded. Countless times I see us push into SBI lands only for you guys to attack our flank instead of attacking SBI elsewhere.
Welp so it begins…
though you realize if we do that, then an SBI equivalent of yourself would make their way onto the forums and complain about double teaming as well. Attacking someone whose currently attacking the other is actually a more effective way to double team then straight up both attacking the same target. because SBI would have to call off their attack to defend.
perhaps we should make it a rule that everyone must refer to this as “wvwVW” instead of shortening it to “wvw” so that we can remember the true aspect of this game
make sure to hit “submit”
Thx a lot all for your comments, it really motivates me to continue !
Tell me what do you prefer, i want to do my next tutorial on my pistolwhip build, but i’ve find like 15 new infiltrators arrow so what do you prefer first ?
Spec vid would be cool, ive seen some highranked ppl still using pistol whip, if so try and highlight why you prefer it over D/D
and if you do more infiltrators arrow could you have the cursor option turned to on so its a little easier to see exactly where you shoot
either way looking forward to it
Hello thanks for the post!
My gameplay experience is mostly in pvp (both wvw and spvp)
But my comment will mostly be for spvp
What I have noticed among most of the more experienced players is a playstyle that I did not imagine for a melee sneak archtype. The most popular style is full glass cannon, which is made viable due to combined high mobility and stealth. IMO this is great and functions perfectly for class dynamic. But it seems that the melee aspect plays a secondary role to range as a result.
Mainly short bow. Most thieves in tpvp run around with short bow a majority of the time doing aoe dmg and only switch to (dagger dagger/sword pistol) for a few seconds to drop the burst bomb and then retreat back to SB.
I believe this is due to a lack of more viable weapon sets and specs. The short bow is amazingly balanced and I am afraid that it is just going to be nerfed to address this issue. I would rather see some other weapons get some buffs with viable specs. Perhaps some that are not full glass cannon but still equally viable performing a different (more melee centered) roll in pvp. That would be great, players could choose which route they prefer and not feel pigonholed into one style.
Basically; please dont nerf short bow so thieves have to go into melee more but instead balance other sets/specs to foster more diversity in high end pvp settings.
I leveled entirely in WvW from lvl 26 to 80 in a manner of days.
but to do it you def need an ideal situation. if you are in a group that moves quickly from supply camp to camp (or tower to tower if large enough) there is no other exp grind that can compare, or as fun imo.
however it needs to be in a BL/EB that is mostly held by an opposing sever, whose presence is big enough to backcap you but small enough that they never wipe your zerg.
so idealy a small or dead server that is being dominated but you have a consistent group big enough to take a tower/camp in a decent amount of time.
all this mushy backhanded compliments from JQ n SBI making my kitten soft. cant wait for next week “the real” week to crack some more skulls
on a side note it was very entertaining to see LoD, Lords of Death again. I assume the very same from Darkfall. I guess it makes sense you guys would be up here in tier 1 haha. looking very forward to fighting you kittens more too
serious good times, all the times
Can we get updates on Daish’s BL location or is he only in EB
Weve earned this right. Let us have our wrath.
Human engineer, CoF gear, commander no guild tag
all I need to know
one thing Ive noticed about the nature of AOEs or ranged fights in this game is you are actually at advantage when fighting from below. Ever hear of having the high ground?
example: i play a thief, and cluster bomb aoe is a powerful range attack, but it is limited because it is arcing. When I am lower than my target it is much more effective, like if I am attacking a wall I run up to it until im touching the wall and then shoot at the top (but not actually where enemy is standing— still the side of the wall) this takes away the arc aspect of the skill and allows me to spam it. Also, even though I am hitting the wall face the aoe still acts like it would on level ground and spans the reticle distance on top of the wall hitting any defenders there.
in the reverse; if I am defending on top of the wall I have to deal with arcing, so much slower time to target. and thus is not spammable and a lot less effective. also I can not hit anything directly below without being completely exposed literally standing on the edge. this top-down dead zone is rather large and often I waste a scatter because it clips the edge of the wall instead of where I try and shoot.
range aoe is much more effective from lower groundwow I was doubtful when I went to watch it, but definitely am impressed.
great work
to be perfectly honest it seems like their thinking was that if thieves can have this amount of melee burst that they should not be able to do as much damage at range, or “range” (since it was already the shortest range, range weapon)
but while playing the only time I had really thought to myself “wow this could be op” was when going to the range spells. thief is a melee class and the amount of damage we can put out while in melee range is, without argument, very powerful. but in those situations when i did move to range (dancing dagger, cluster bomb) and those abilities ALSO did very good damage it occured to me to be a little bit OP.
IMO having this toned down is much more preferable to straight backstab nerfs, which happens to be more of a direct source of damage
I was under the impression that items from gold chest have a much higher chance to salvage into silvers where as the bronze 200pt boxes almost always will transmute into just dust. Is this still the case or has it been disproved?
also @Leadfoot the easiest way to get to the cool looking gear at lower ranks is free tournament chests. Only need to win once, not too hard
I definitely like the sound of this, especially the world announcements.
Since referencing GW1 as things they should do is so popular around here, im wondering this: Were all these awesome features from Guild Wars present and available at the launch of it, or were they added in over the years?
Really fun matchup so far.
SoR and IoJ have to do something to keep their moral up, going into the week.
If you recall both SoR and IoJ made good pushes late into the week of their respective matchups. But lost out because these weeks basically came down to a 1v1. Now that their both in the same match against SoS theres no telling what can happen once the weekends over.
Server moral plays a huge part in this game. A few weeks ago on SoS there was mass chaos and finger pointing going on mostly due to transfers and everyone wanting to do their own thing. Moral was low and we were getting stomped. But eventually everyone started working together and it really showed. Now even the pugs are motivated and attentive. I dont even think of them as pugs but more as small mercenary groups now.
Also running on highest graphic settings is not a big deal for me but would be a plus
I’m currently lookin to buy a new MacBook pro. I was wondering which machines available are known to have the best performance with GW 2.
I ask this because I know that the responses for performance have differed widely for different machines since the release of the guild wars mac client. (Example: with the new retina MBPs)
I’m goin mac for career purposes but I also like to have it double as my gaming machine. So don’t just say “build a pc”
Also bootcamping is an option but I’d prefer to run it native.
My goal is to run game with good fps in WvW
Your many years in MMO’s haven’t taught you that one of the best indications that a class is out of whack is these kind of threads ’ Don’t touch us, we are not op. Other players just don’t know how to play ’
One thing that HAS evolved in mmos is the use of forums to complain. People are more likely now to just become apathetic and not even try to counter a problem and instead spend more effort mindlessly complaining on forum until its nerfed so they dont have to try.
In every MMO people will complain about the class. Be it thief, rogue, or assassin the play style and implied vision of this character type lends it self to broad and sweeping scrutiny (see post by Dried Donkey above).
The class is always presented to be 1v1 dominant and high dmg as well as being mobile/stealth. To players who subconsciously have bought in to this idea it makes it extra annoying to be beat by the class. So they will be motivated more so to cry for nerf.
Good game developers know this, so they know where to draw the line.
In conclusion: they just jelly that they rolled a profession that cant stealth and backstab.
lol wait but based off what you said, you still get there. meaning with HS you caught up to the player ,therefore you are MORE mobile. you cant just negate HS.
thieves are def the most mobile solo profession. signet, shortbow, shadowstep
in wvw everyone is up to speed if there in a zerg, but again solo the thief is the best roamer
I dont have a Guild Wars 2 folder within application support. Nor could I find the directory, should I be worried about this?
