Thanks. I’m conflicted. I either want to download GW1 to my new PC or I want to stamp my feet until ANet lets us run dungeons with our own alts in GW2. To have a small guerrilla contingent of my own Sylvari alts would make me SO happy. The fury of the salad people!!
Correction to the above: the couple in the vid is running WvW, not a dungeon.
Wow, I can’t believe I never knew that. What does DoA and UW stand for?
Wait… I never finished GW1… are you saying there WAS actually a part of the game when we COULD use our own alts as companions??
I was wondering if anyone here has any personal experience using SoftXpand with GW2.
For those who don’t know what it is, it’s software that basically allows you to attach 2 mice, 2 keyboards, and 2 monitors to a single PC, and run 2 workstations off of it. What this means for us is that 2 people could run their own instance of GW2, each using their own account, off of one computer:
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hUsQXMkgd2o
In the above YouTube vid, a couple is running a dungeon together using 1 PC with SoftXpand. They say there’s no lag, or at least no more than if they were each using a separate PC. The video is blurry, so it’s hard to tell how much lag there really is. They do say that each of their monitors has its own GPU.
Has anyone used this? I’m currently the only one in my house who plays GW2, but some of my family members are interested too and I’d like to be able to play with them without shelling out for a whole 2nd gaming PC. Sounds too good to be true though.
^ That would be my dream as well, though like you, I know it’s unlikely.
ANet has always “wanted us to work together.” It’s been called Guild Wars since the beginning. But that didn’t stop them from implementing the heroes in Nightfall. Based on that, I’d say that just because they’d LIKE us to work together doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t ever use the hero system again. I’d say they’re well aware that some of their playerbase would just prefer to play alone.
You can contact support to get your gems back. You’re entitled to that. PLUS – you’ll need another makeover kit anyway to get you glow back once the fix is live. Other than that, nothing we can do but wait…
This is a known bug that affects only female Sylvari. It’s affected a lot of people as you can see in this thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Total-Make-over-Kit-Sylvari-Glow-Merged/first
Apparently the fix for this bug will be included in an upcoming patch. Hopefully it will be the next one.
Very much disagree that more humans are likely. We already have humans, AND big humans. I, along with many others, would be very disappointed with a new “race” that is actually just ethnic humans (and this is coming from an Asian player). I haven’t been to the Human and Norn character creation screens, but I know for the Sylvari there are certain face options that look more Asian, or more African American. With slider tweaking they can be made to look even more ethnic. Do the Humans not get options like this as well?
I think as expansions are added for Cantha and Elona (at least I hope they’ll be added) the devs may release more faces that are appropriate for those regions, like in GW1. But as for a separate human race that just happens to be ethnic? I highly doubt it.
+1
I posted a similar idea here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Character-Overview-in-GW2-Extended-Experience/first#post1490529
But it didn’t get any love. I can’t believe that so few people are interested in the idea of a mobile app that can display in-game information! To me it seems like a no brainer, and useful in many different ways.
RE: Traherne; no, I don’t know why everyone hates him. But yes, everyone seems to. Why?
Dungeons are what I would want to use them for. I don’t really want to have to look for a group of 5 to do one. BUT. Since the average player is going to be better than an NPC companion, I would think the dungeon would have to be scaled according to how many NPC heroes were in the group. Not sure how/if that would work.
I can’t remember which forum I saw it on, but someone posted a picture of a winged creature similar to a Largos whose wings folded into a cloak-like covering when they weren’t using them. That would be cool, or perhaps they could fold into a cape.
I agree, I want to see more Largos! I can’t wait to watch their story unfold as the game progresses.
Do you think it should?
Being somewhat of loner player, I enjoyed the artificial company in Nightfall. But from what I heard, the hero system unbalanced gameplay… or something. I don’t really know what the problem was exactly.
What do you guys predict?
and hopefully their own theme (and I doubt Soule comes cheap).
Soule doesn’t work with Anet anymore. I like to think Anet cut those ties because of how their customers were treated when trying to buy the soundtrack through DirectSong (Soule’s company).
Anyway, Tengu are pretty much guaranteed. We already know where their capital is, what it is called and where the entrances are.
Bit of a shame. I personally really dislike the redesign. Would have much rather seen the Largos and what the art team could do with an underwater capital, or another original race. It would also give them a blank slate as far as lore, possible professions, skills and the like. The Tengu are already written. I can’t really imagine any huge surprises.
They will most definitely be paid expansion content and you’ll probably get 1 or 2 more character slots to go along with them.
I don’t see any reason why BOTH Tengu and Largos couldn’t both be playable eventually. I’d prefer the Largos too, but I think Tengu will be first.
PS: maybe other countries are not celebrating it?
maybe not,
(but we dont celebrate wintersday in the Philippines)
so why not hearts day themed weapon skin also?
(we dont celebrate hearts day also here, just in case you might ask)
Wintersday is Christmas. Philippines has Christmas.
Philippines also has Valentine’s Day. I know bc my bday is November 14 and my parents always teased me about Vday being exactly 9 mos prior.
This suggestion of course assumes that the GW2 Extended Experience for iOS is still in development (I hope it is!).
In addition to the features the devs have already described for this app, it would be nice if they included a character overview screen. This would be like the in-game hero screen, but we’d be able to access all of our characters’ info – stats, armors, weapons, etc.
This would be incredibly useful for altoholics (like myself) who need to keep track of all our characters’ gear stats so that we know which armor/weapon drops to salvage/sell or save for another character. If we could view and keep track of that information on the iPad while we’re playing the game, it would be a big help. I know a lot of altoholics use spreadsheets to track all that stuff. I personally use an app that records athletic stats and adapted it to keep track of GW2 stats. But a GW2-dedicated app that serves this purpose would be infinitely better.
If you’re having to stretch to see it, then you’re the one making it a stretch aren’t you? shrug I’m not the only one who has seen the similarities. There’s a whole thread (or more) devoted to the topic on GW2Guru. Like I said, who knows? Surely you don’t claim to.
Basically my question is this – who pollinates the Pale Tree?
Most trees reproduce sexually – the ones that are asexual reproduce by sending shoots up from their own roots. If a tree reproduces by spreading seeds or nuts (i.e., the Sylvari pods), then that’s an indication of sexual reproduction. Perhaps other Pale Trees (like Malyck’s) can have their pollen carried on the wind or on insects to pollinate our own Pale Tree?
Or maybe the devs decided to ignore this bit of biology for the sake of fantasy. Not saying anything’s wrong with that, I’m only speculating. One could even say that Ronan is the Sylvari’s father, since the Pale Tree modeled her children after the humans, him being the first human that she knew of.
What do you guys think?
I think it will happen in the first official paid expansion. When that expansion will come out is anyone’s guess. I’d say between a year-2 years from GW2’s launch date, which I know is a wide guess.
True. But both Largos and Mursaat have actually been called “Unseen.” There’s the similar skintones, yes… and neither race has ever been seen without a mask. Maybe the feather appendages could have evolved into fins? Who knows.
We were just talking about thr possible Largos-Mursaat connection in another thread. Over on GW2 Guru they were talking about that too. Both races have the ability to make themselves “unseen.” Both sport similar armor styles. Maaaaybe?
Thanks for that link! If Largos were added as a playable race and they actually are related to or evolved Mursaat, that might add some interesting tensions between the Largos and the Sylvari. Mursaat killed Ronan’s family, didn’t they?
Fix is incoming with next patch (I’m the one who fixed it). I think it affects female Sylvari exclusively.
This was posted by randyknapp (an ANet dev) on the GW2 sub-reddit earlier today, though after todays ‘sale’ patch; so hopefully glows will return in a week.
Found the link going to share for those glowless Sylvari interested…this is GREAT news!

(Dancing around)
Yaaaaaaay! Soon I’ll be able to play again. I haven’t done since I noticed my glow gone, bc its absence made me too upset to play.
I’ve been considering installing GW1 on my new machine. I miss the old armors. And because I never played it on a good gaming rig, I never got to see the game look the way it’s supposed to.
If ANet were to add an aquatic race, I believe it’s more likely to be the Krait (or the Naga, if they come with a Canthan expansion). There’s considerable variation in appearance between different types of krait; I’ve seen them in shades of grey and brown, as well as light and dark skinned variants. Some have heavy scales, some have spines, and some are almost smooth. Some have a flat, swimming tail, while others are more pointed and snake-like. There’s also visual distinction between male and female Krait, which is important for players.
More importantly, Krait can function equally well on land as in water, and traditionally they have also been known to possess different professions (Back in GW1, Krait could be any of the six base professions).
I think krait are about as likely as the centaurs to become playable. No-legs and 4-legs, both of them evil. Where would the pants go? The boots? They’re burning down our towns and enslaving us one second and fighting an Elder Dragon beside us the next? I would be very surprised if either of these made it.
The Tengu are almost certainly going to be the next playable race – not many can argue that this is probably true. And since the Tengu are a bestial race, ANet should know the diversity of their players well enough to realize that a balancing act is called for. That means NOT following a bestial race with a monstrous one like the krait. Beautiful characters are highly demanded by many players, and Largos offer a great potential for beauty. In fact, they’re the only race among the likely candidates that can satisfy that aesthetic need.
In no particular order:
- Simple aesthetics. Some liked the look of certain gear or techniques on male characters more. Some were also offended by a perceived lack of modest clothing options for female characters.
- They were tired of being crudely propositioned and/or viciously harassed, often by the same individuals.
- They were taking advantage of minute but demonstrable differences in animations that favored male characters with fractionally quicker abilities in some situations (or… they thought they were taking advantage of those things, but hadn’t been keeping up to date with the patch notes).
- They were Roleplayers, and being a person of a different gender is no more of a stretch than being a Wizard or a Space Monkey or a Robot or whatever.
- They were the other kind of Roleplayers, and their character needed to be an expression of their own sexual fantasies for them to properly enjoy ERP.
- They were altaholics, and wanted to differentiate character #15 from characters #1-14.
- They honestly did not give a crap what their character looked like, and after selecting a class, either left the character appearance in the default configuration, or just hit the random button until the tutorial started.
- Some of the male characters had shapely buttocks, and some of the female players did not mind watching them run.
See, if some dude is bothering me on an MMO based on what my character looks like, I just tell him that I’m a guy… and start flirting back. Works like a charm! Lol. I haven’t really had that issue in GW2. I guess guys don’t really want to hit on a salad. But the Sylvari are still really beautiful to ME, so it’s win win.
I kind of agree. Somewhere in Metrica Province (I forget where) there is a quest to interrogate the Skritt to test their intelligence. I nearly fell off my chair giggling at the dialogue in that quest, but still a part of me wanted to tell my character, “stop being mean! They can’t help it that they’re stupid!”
Also, I used to work as a GM for another MMO, and between data mining and outright polling some of our players we were able to paint a very interesting picture of player gender choice. The short version is that female players play male characters about as often as male players play female characters (just over 2/5ths of the time in either case), but often cite very different reasons for doing so. That was a pretty different game though, and the question of gender differences in fantasy races is a pretty huge complication we didn’t have to deal with.
I don’t really have to guess too hard about why male players play female characters, but what were the reasons that female players play male characters?
Thanks to everyone who replied! I’m going to stop adding to the poll now, because the tallies for the populous humans have started wrapping to the next line, sort of ruining my bar graph look. That, and it wasn’t easy keeping up with all the replies! I just wanted to do this poll to get an idea of what people like the most, and maybe what goes into their decision process when they enter the character creation screen.
Some things I gathered from the results:
1) Despite many people’s opinions (my own included) that humans are a boring race, they’re obviously still the most popular by a landslide!
2) The distribution of professions is actually a lot more even than I expected it would be. If I continued the poll, I have the feeling they’d even out even more
3) The female population beat out the males in every race except the Charr… I guess I’m not surprised about the Charr females being somewhat left in the cold, but I had thought the male-female division among other races would be more even. Nope, ladies win. Quite possibly because among our playerbase, the gentlemen win. :P
4) Guys think Norn men are cartoonish and goofy looking. Just learned that today, thanks for clearing that up. :P Charr are apparently the preferred brute type character.
5) The idea of male Elementalists and Mesmers is apparently quite awful to people.
6) It’s apparently almost inconceivable for a Sylvari to be a warrior.
Anyway. This was fun.
Updated up to Nittles’ characters. Be back to do some more later. Even though it’s early, it’s interesting to see some of these results, isn’t it? Some things are really not a surprise, other things are. For example, I’m surprised most of the Norns so far are female. I would have thought a big hulking Viking character would have been popular among guys. Shows what I know.
I’ll go first:
- Sylvari, Female, Ranger
- Sylvari, Female, Thief
- Sylvari, Female, Mesmer
- Sylvari, female, Elementalist
UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who participated. I’m going to stop adding to the poll now. This has been a limited sample, but it’s enough to give a general idea of the trends in character creation represented by our playerbase. We talk about the popularity of this race, or that profession, but it’s interesting to see the results of an actual sampling. Just some food for thought!

+1 to adding GW1 armor skins in the gem store.
Might be difficult to manage hug and kiss animations with all the different character heights and shapes in the game.
For example, one of the main complaints from fans of EAGames’ Sims franchise is that the Sims are all the same height. But this is necessary to make sure each character’s animations align properly with the other’s when they interact. I remember in Sims 2 (never played Sims 3 so can’t speak for that) there was a cheat to make Sims taller/ shorter. I used it to make men taller than women. It worked fine for most of the game, but when they kissed, the guy would kiss the girl’s forehead and the girl would kiss his neck, or the air under his chin. If they were the same height, they would have been lip to lip. The animations can’t handle differing heights.
Now imagine how much worse that would be when one of you is an Asura and the other is a Norn.
I’m surprised that no one thought of vines for hair? Maybe they looked too much like tentacles. Anyway, I also hope they add more options for Sylvari hair in the future. When people complain that all Sylvari look alike, I think the hair is to blame. Sylvari have so many options for customization, but those are all more subtle compared to their hair, which is their most prominent feature. And so the lack of hair options make it seem like there isn’t much variation among the Sylvari.
If you have gaming friends IRL chances are at least one of them knows how to build a decent gaming PC for $600. Unless you really need a laptop, I’d suggest enlisting a friend to help you build a desktop, or learn to do it yourself. More bang for your buck.
Profession specific armors were more important in GW1 because everyone was human. It seems that racial armors have replaced the profession armors for now, but I would be happy if they were implemented in the future. I miss being able to look at someone’s character and know what profession they are. Profession specific gear adds replayability value to the game and encourages more “profession pride” and identity. Also encourages more characters being made, which is to ANet’s benefit. I know in GW I had at least 3 alts that I made simply so I could wear their profession armors!
Anyway, +1 to this.
They are only nomads and loners to the other races who haven’t really seen them before. In the deep sea, they have homes (therefore NOT nomads) and a society (therefore NOT loners). The Asura kept to themselves too, before the dragons drove them out of their underground homes. Not sure why you think the master-apprentice mechanic is so anti-GW2 or anti-playable, for that matter. SW is an obvious example of that mechanic, but it’s not the first or only one to use it.
There’s a lot to indicate that your playable race preferences are actually pretty backward, in terms of likelihood. Tengu & Largos > Kodan > Quaggan & Hylek (and any of the sympathy races).
Until Mesmers can steal and use initiative, I can’t agree with the above statement. Maybe I don’t have enough experience w the 2 professions, but the only thing I can see as similar between the two is shadowstepping for the Thief and teleporting for the Mesmer.
My argument for the Largos isn’t original; I read it in another race convo and agree – I believe the Largos will eventually be made into a playable race because they were introduced to the world in a way similar to the Sylvari… In that they are a mysterious, previously unheard of race that came to light on account of the dragons (assuming that Bubbles is the “horrors” that Master Sdias is referring to, and I think he is). They are being driven from their homes because their home waters have become “dark” and they must prepare. Sayeh al’Rajid is somehow connected to Trahearne, who is a central part of the dragon plot. There are many indications that the Largos will play a major role in the future story. On top of that, their lore provides fertile grounds for becoming a playable race. They have Houses (much like the Cycles, Legions, Colleges, etc. of current races), a home city, and a training system like that of Jedi Masters and Padawans. It’s not hard to imagine choosing a House when creating a Largos character, and being sent on quests as the apprentice of my Largos master early in the personal story.
Aside from these hints in the lore, there are design indications that prime the Largos for becoming playable. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that they happen to be humanoid. People who want Quaggans/Hylek try to dismiss the armor argument, but it’s an important one as it involves less work for the devs if the race can fit existing armor models. Plus the Largos may well be the reason why the underwater aspect of gameplay was given so much consideration. Can anyone think of another MMO that got the the same TLC for underwater worlds and combat that GW2 got? That’s telling, IMO.
I do agree that the Largos need some work. I love the idea of them, but like someone else said, I’m not particularly impressed with their textures. I’d want more options for customization, too. By that I mean it would be boring if all Largos had white hair and blue luminescence on their wings as all current in-game Largos seem to have. These are all things that can be improved however. All in all, Largos get my +1!
I’ve been fantasizing about this exact thing since the hero system in GW1, honestly. Not just in dungeons either. I want this option EVERYWHERE. (Ok maybe not in PvP/WvW)
Why?
- Because I want to be antisocial sometimes. Or all the time. This shouldn’t mean that I can’t run a dungeon.
- Because I’m a control freak and I want to dictate everything about my companions; weapons, skills, armors, dyes, everything.
- Because I like the idea of combo attacks, but coordinating them with other players seems like it would be a pain.
Taking this idea and running with it, I would love a way to “tab” between characters to change your active character on the fly (obviously using a diff. key bc tab is already taken). All inactive characters would use the companion AI.
The developers are aware of this issue and have confirmed it to be a bug. I have refunded your recent purchases of 2 Total Makeover Kits (700 gems). These gems should show on your account the next time you login. I know this will not resolve the glow issue for you just yet, but it will allow for you to purchase another kit once the issue is confirmed to have been fixed by the developers.
Please be aware the bug which caused you to lose your glow is still active, but we are working to get the fix for that in an upcoming update. When the bug is fixed, you’ll be able to use a kit to fix your character. Until then, keep an eye on the news forums as that is where we post the patch notes every patch.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/news
In the meantime, I would like to apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused you.
If you have any further questions, please let us know.
Regards,
GM Serendipity
Main points in this response:
1) Still no ETA on a fix for the glow bug; just an “upcoming update.”
2) Yes, a Makeover Kit will be required to get our glow back once the bug is fixed (it won’t just automatically come back).
+1 for farmers and exploding chickens. Brilliant!

“We kind of went with the 8 professions because we think that… it’s enough to cover the really important archetypes for players. Each one has its distinctions and we try to keep them distinct in that way…” ~ John Peters
This was part of an answer to a player’s question (last one asked in the vid) about whether professions will be gear locked. This doesn’t specifically say that they won’t be adding new professions, but still, the mention of 8 professions covering the important archetypes suggests that ANet is comfortable with the professions that they have.
I couldn’t find that video that Khaine was referring to where Colin Johanson talked about expanding the current professions and that new ones were unlikely. If anyone has a link to that video, please post it!
Yet another to join the club.
I play only Sylvari. I have four now, and WAS planning to buy extra slots so I could have all 8 professions. Now, I don’t even want to play anymore. Not until this is fixed. ANet cannot pretend that they don’t know how important a character’s appearance is to a player. If they didn’t know that, they wouldn’t have created the legendaries.
Simply put, ANet took our money and ruined our characters. This is NOT a backburner issue.
I’ll be back on the 26th to see if the fix has been made. If it hasn’t, I won’t be back for a long time, and certainly won’t be spending any money on additional… anything.
She looks like Cameron Diaz!
The page for Flame & Frost mentions being able to choose our daily achievements. I can’t find this option; am I just not seeing it? Or has it not been introduced yet?
I really want to use this feature. I want to boohoo every time I see Daily Dodger on the list bc I suck at dodging and can’t get the timing right… so every time it comes up it basically means I don’t get the laurel for that particular day.
Wait… how do you guys know whether the Sylvari have sex? Was that actually in the lore??
