Aesthetic is probably the most important factor for fun. So it really depends on your personal favourite aethetic.
However ele and engi can be fun due to the technical nature of the classes. Mesmer can be fun because of the utility and uniqueness. Warrior can be fun because of its brute force feel and high mobility. Then you can also get fun out of simply being useful. I dont really like the thief combat feel or aesthetic but i enjoy playing thief in dungeons because of the stealth utility and big hits. And ele is just flat out the best class which can be fun in its own way.
My personal favourite aesthetic is necro. But i get frustrated playing it because its so weak and useless. I also enjoy the mesmer for the same reason. But its frustrating to play solo.
Wait what? Okay, I never do such things but if I kick someone and we are only 2 players in the party, I get kicked too? Didn’t know that. When has this been implemented? Together with the new kicking system?
Kicking yourself out has been a thing since the game released.
There are other things that will make most of us buy it regardless. If the challenging group content is disappointing then it will just mean we go back into semi inactivity sooner and be less likely to buy gems etc.
For example. I will be buying it for the new elite specs and the story. The new WvW and stronghold stuff is an added bonus that I may try out and enjoy. Im already certain i will be buying it. But it would be a very nice bonus to feel like my money has gone towards areas i like (instanced content).
Also i dont really get why people say “if theres no instanced content i wont buy it”. Who are you kidding. You are clearly invested in the game if you follow news, still play and read these forums. I seriously doubt someone like that isnt going to buy it. Unless they plan to quit. But if you havent quit already then what makes you so sure you will with the expansion.

I will do it later tonight.
Theres some stuff on the DnT forums i believe. This was something i found immediately. I know theres more somewhere on that site.
Theres also a calculator website but i dont remember the address. That should be linked somewhere on DnT’s site as well.
I was always under impression that designing raid content was allocating substantial development effort for very small minority of the player base (PVE oriented guilds that could organise raids). It makes sense for a game like WoW (that is based around the idea of vertical progression), but doesn’t really appear justifiable for a more casual-oriented game like GW2. Wasn’t that the original reason why GW2 didn’t have raids?
Theres no such thing as a completely casual orientated MMO. A game doesnt need to have vertical progression to have raids make sense. Raids can give skins and such for rewards instead of the next tier of gear. People still focus too much on what raids are in other games. GW2 is completely different so GW2 raids can be completely different. The only similarity would be that they are instanced content for organised groups (at least thats my personal hope).
The hentai tonic?
Kicking yourself out has been a thing since the game released.
Besides a level 80 warrior with only 600 AP and joining arah. Sounds suspiciously like someones second account. So you probably would have been fine. Honestly dont know why you are complaining. He didnt ruin your solo. You did that yourself.
‘slow clap’
Also noone in this thread is being toxic. They were just pointing out the quite amusing truth. Maybe you should take a step back and have a good laugh at your mistake. :>

if you don’t nuke down molten duo and leave the berserker last, it is probably one of the best boss fights in the game.
It can also be the most frustrating because of how those fire fields work. And then theres the berserkers auto attack which is basically an almost perma melee denial for squishy classes.
Its definitely a better fight. But its not great either.
(edited by spoj.9672)
Erm. You know they said that burn is getting nerfed because it will stack. I said maybe ethereal will be good. We do know confusion is getting two damage components. So that most likely means a tick and a bonus on skill use. So it could very well beat burning. And it also depends on the enemy. We might get more frequent attacking bosses in the future.
Also fire does not complete destroy it. Phalanx warrior makes fire fields mostly redundant mid fight. And its not like you cant use both fields in sequence to get burn and confusion. If there is a worthwhile use then the fields become good regardless how often others are used.
@phys
You kind of just outlined what i already said.
With the skipping thing there are alternatives already. What you are suggesting are simply extra choices in instances. So events and such in a huge elite zone (we dont have this type of content yet so it doesnt fit). But people value time and reward over most things. Time is a valuable resource. You cant really fix this unless you overbuff loot which will create farms that need to be nerfed into oblivion. Which means you are back to square one.
And i dont think its a bad thing that blasts are the best type of finisher. I do think 20% chance projectile finishers should be changed to 100%. And i do think whirls should be made more reliable. But other than that its fine. Theres always going to be a best way to do certain things.
As far as fields are concerned. Fire, smoke and lightning are on equal footing. Group swiftness and stealth is invaluable out of combat buffs. Might is invaluable in combat. They are different and opposite situations but that doesnt mean either is better than the other. In fact lightning field could be considered the best simply because swiftness is always useful. As far as other fields go water is niche but very useful. Light would be really good if whirls were more reliable to trigger the cleanse. Dark fields will be good with the break bar stuff. Ethereal will maybe be good with condi changes. Poison is niche for weakness and probably the only field that will stay bad.
(edited by spoj.9672)
Even if you fix those (and you cant fix them all). The problem will still be there. Because group interaction is important. Like i said the content isnt perfect. But as it stands its the necro that is the problem.
Finishers are ok to a certain degree. The problem with leaps is they often move you away from the group/field so even if the effects are good they arent perfect. You cant really change this because they wouldnt make sense if they were changed. Whirls have problems with reliability which could be fixed with enemy/ally tracking. Projectiles are fine. Blasts are fine. Its just blasts work better for buffing because you dont move. And projectiles have a more niche use.
Field balance is actually not too bad. Its just certain fields are only situational. With break bar changes dark fields should be much better. And with condition cap changing. Ethereal fields with projectile + whirl finishers could become a thing.
Not going to even respond to your third point. Its not worth getting into an arguement over.
Limited mob complexity is an issue. But even with more complex AI it wont really change anything. Groups will just use CC and blind spam to control the group. Just as they do already. It will simply become even more important.
I dont agree with the last point. There are benefits. And thats reliability. Mob loot and slightly more difficult mobs could shift this either way. More difficult trash might encourage people to skip more. People are always going to value time. There are ways to solve this to a certain degree but i dont think its in anyway a serious problem.
There are plenty of thematically correct things they could add to make the necro fit the current meta (accessible blasts, unique debuffs, high damage, gw1 style skills and group lifesteal which we are getting). It really is the reverse. Which do think is the real problem? A single class out of 8 that doesnt fit. Or a meta which fits all classes except one. Im going to say the necro is the problem.
The meta isnt perfect. But group interaction is always going to be the most valuable part of it. This is an MMO. Group play is the purpose of this type of game. We need to be valuable in a group. Something as simple as a single accessible blast finisher and a bit more damage can improve our standing dramatically in casual group situations.
Religion is the cause of this kind of stuff on a regular basis throughout history and recent events. Its realistic portrayal. And i dont think its a topic that should be shied away from.
Don’t forget they intend to remove all damage modifiers so maybe all our classes can hit like floppy revs #spongehype.
What?
Why do people always mention protection for necro. The only access to protection the necro has is spectral wall (will troll in PvE because of the fear). And Ritual of Protection. Which is totally useless and can barely be considered access to protection. I dont really see how 3 second protection on well use (which have long cooldowns) is any sort of viable form of protection. You spam 4 wells and get 12 seconds of protection. So good! /s
That trait should have always been wells pulse protection at the very least. But noone really cared because its such a bad trait in a bad line.
(edited by spoj.9672)
Revenant blacklist before it even comes out. I like it. :>
You have whirls on GS and new DS. You dont really need any more lifesteal interaction than that. Besides we have 1 leap and no useful blasts. So its not like blast/leap for vampiric aura is going to be useful to us in PvP anyway. Blast for blind will be useful for groups breaking defiant though.
You act like its surprising that the open world stuff is like that.
We still dont know anything about the “challenging group content”. Or what they are doing to fractals. So theres really nothing new to talk about. And its pointless worrying.
I sincerely hope you’re right.
Im not saying be optimistic. Im just saying nothings changed. And theres no further evidence to say we wont get instanced stuff. So its pointless fretting over. We will find out when we find out.
Oh. As if celestial wasnt enough. They gave you dolyak runes aswell. Such generosity.
You act like its surprising that the open world stuff is like that.
We still dont know anything about the “challenging group content”. Or what they are doing to fractals. So theres really nothing new to talk about. And its pointless worrying.
You also have 3 specs so you can go defensive with the 3rd one. Spite, Reaper and then death/blood magic.
I think berserker will work but i don’t think berserker and spite trait line should be mixed. Ofcourse there are probably a few who have already decided to do this but it shouldn’t come as a surprise when they suddenly get one shotted by Dragon hunter trueshot with +50% damage.
Why does the spite trait line have any relevance to that?
The new WvW stuff may make me play it. I will definitely be only using berserker. I feel like glassy bruiser is the way to go. Especially if we engage with frost armour and putrid defence. As Bhawb said valkyrie is probably the safer bet in WvW.
For me theres no way im going to craft a different set just for WvW.
Dark field giving blind on leap + blast is better. It gives us defiance breaking fields.
OP is overrating the dagger.
No necromancer has ever appeared in a high level Pvp tournament with dagger. The weapon doesn’t have GAP Closers, or defensive tools to survive in melee like reflects or Stability.
Necromancers really did get the short end of the weapon stick.
I think the reason our weapons suck is MINIONS. Their DPS is figured into the overall power budget for the class, Also, their finishers. But since they suck, necromancers who don’t use them have low DPS and no finishers.
No necromancer has ever appeared in high level pvp tournaments and not been a liability.
Staff isnt really a good weapon. Its just our only 1200 range weapon. Rating it highly doesnt make any sense.
Please spoil me with a perma hair kit. I can dress up however you like.
Or will the new system totally prevent you from putting a master trait in the grandmaster slot?
Yes.
Theres not really any reason to miss out on eruption unless you dont need the might and fury (speedrun)
Might comes from PS War not running kitten Warbanner instead of SoR.
Fury comes from either FGJ or you blasting your lava font with arcane wave while doing ice bow.
Instantly freezing a boss and getting 90%+ of your Lightning Storm off is worth more than a kittenty Eruption.
But you can use eruption and still get 100% of your lightning storm off. An instant freeze only matters if you are using tempest defence. But the OP is learning. I doubt he cares about such optimal situations. Tempest defence isnt that great in pugs.
@gin
The reason people cast lightning storm early is because the vuln is important for bursting with icebow and we want to be in fire attunement for our damage modifier traits. Which means we need to end our start rotation on fire. If we want to stack might and fury then we need lava font. This means lightning storm has to be cast before we switch to fire and we need to cast lava font before we summon icebow.
Its ideal to cast lightning storm just as the boss becomes hostile so you dont lose any damage. But it doesnt matter too much in general. If you can time it right you can eruption > lighting storm > lava font without missing any damage. But your freeze will be later (doesnt matter in pugs).
(edited by spoj.9672)
You can start air > lightning storm > eruption > lava font as an alternative. Theres not really any reason to miss out on eruption unless you dont need the might and fury (speedrun). Of course flame burst is a dps loss. But most groups tend to lack burn uptime especially in pugs. Im guessing the OP is more concerned about the general rotation and what works in pugs.
The only problem with having unrestricted completely unrestricted is that it means some paths become really boring and over exploited. And restricted is far too restricted. Id personally like 3 different rulesets to give a middle ground option. But we would be splitting things too much if we did that. So i know thats not really an option.
This is kind of why i push for restricted to allow certain exploits like jumping over walls. Because i think unrestricted should remain true to its name.
Im predicting about 5 maps. Verdant Brink doesnt even have much of multiple biomes as far as we can see. And im guessing most maps are going to be more focused around one biome with a bit of branching into the others. Which means we need more than 3.
Besides we have an idea of where we will be going in the jungle. And based on the maps we have in gw1. It looks like a lot more than 3 even if they are big. We need to go to the heart of the jungle which is quite far from verdant brink. And weve seen from the trailer we are probably going to see the balth temple. Which is also far off from current maps. Theres also the bloodstone north of verdant brink which is very likely.
Usually expansions bring a whole continent of maps. Which is more than 10. So getting about 10 could still be considered “fewer maps”. Although i dont think it will be quite that much either. But 3 is way too little.
(edited by spoj.9672)
Honestly you’re just noticing one of the number of issues with their new specialization system. They simply haven’t done a great job with a lot of trait placements, and there are a few situations where the three choices can end up all being worthless to you.
hasn’t this been a necro oriented problem since release? haha
THis will be even worse when we have 3 trait lines, and third one brings nothing to the curent builds. yay, i got a 3rd grandmaster, that does kitten-all for my build. THANKS ANET!
Its never been too bad because we can slot adepts in the master and grandmaster tier.
Why does everyone think its only going to be 3 maps. They said less maps but more content per map. That doesnt mean its going to be that few. I doubt they would be able to do a complete story if its only 3 maps.
15 challenges per map. And im fairly certain there will be more than 3 maps. Anyway. Even if its only 45 challenges in the new content. Thats a fairly big contribution towards the elite specs. Which will probably be about 100 hero points maximum.
Oh. In that case, you probably shouldn’t be going condi at all, so Banshee’s Wail is the best choice. Warhorn is good there. Consider that traited Locust Swarm has an effective power coefficient of 3.0 (though crits factor in differently than one big hit) and is AoE. For reference, Backstab is only a 2.4
But i want to go Condi… so banshees wail is out of question…
you’re going to be building crit anyway on a conditions build, why not take reaper’s precision? Life force is always a good thing to have more of, regardless of how little the gain is. It’s better than nothing.
In PvE the only time lifeforce is an issue is if you are playing condi and trying to solo a boss like lupicus. But i doubt thats something the OP does. That plus the slow attack rate of scepter makes the trait totally worthless.
(edited by spoj.9672)
Theres also going to be hero challenges in the new maps. So you really dont need to suffer through more than 65 hero challenges in the base game. I suspect there will be close to enough in the new maps to unlock the elite spec. And no matter what you say about PvE. Im sure you WvW’ers will want to at least try the new content.
Yeah putrid defence is passive as well. But a 10% passive is far superior to a bit of toughness.
Thats what i meant. All intended bosses that show up as the next objective. Bosses like Korga and Kholer do show up but theres no doors or anything to suggest they are anything but optional.
Yeah we need to review the unrestricted ruleset as well. It simply says the final boss needs to be killed.
Im guessing noone put any effort into that ruleset when the meeting was held.
I personally want all major bosses to be killed and the path complete to trigger as the minimum for the unrestricted rules.
(edited by spoj.9672)
Axe 2 is not even remotely close to burst. Maybe in comparison to axe 1 it could be considered burst. But against anything else. Nope.
Axe is just flat out the most useless weapon in the game. Scepter is ok because it atleast has a purpose. Although its clunky and pigeonholed. Staff is just pure utility and its weak at that.
I would give axe a 0/5, scepter 2/5 and staff 1.5/5.
Approved.
Whats the full guildname of TCA?
Its not just on necro. Toughness gives pretty poor returns on any class. For example in PvE. It will reduce the damage you take slightly. But the chances are it wont stop you from dieing if you get hit. In PvP it only really helps on frequent weak hits. But people tend to rely on burst to kill each other. Those that dont rely on burst have weak damage anyway. So toughness doesnt help because you could probably survive without it.
Besides the game is about active defence. Passive defence is poor compared to complete avoidance. If it was block on channel then it would be good. As it stands a flat 10% damage reduction is far superior passive defence than a bit of toughness. Because its always 10% no matter how much toughness you had to begin with. So putrid defence is a huge improvement. But it will probably still be an underused trait.
Yeah its fun to watch the goating. These records are cool but people are going to judge harshly. Which is why so many people seem to be against it.
Having all events done makes that less likely and makes things a lot more entertaining.
And despite it being that much it doesnt do much. Toughness is a really over valued stat for a lot of players.
I doubt vampiric aura will effect minions. It will probably only be player allies. Just like spotter, empower allies and strength in numbers.
Mhmm. I don’t see where/how you’re disagreeing with me or think that I am with you…
But that’s not what this thread is about anyway so. Happy Memoria Weekend. Hope you’re having a good one. /hi5
Yeah i was just clarifying.
