But they did port the style to SWTOR, and cutscenes in story seem to be one of the things they did right in that game.

The Battle for Claw Island - My feedback on a second run through

in Personal Story

But it was to showcase Trahearne’s leadership capabilities, not about an epic Player Character fight with a huge monster. I’m not claiming that made the fight fun, but putting him up on the high ground to repeat the same four lines is meant to show him taking charge of the fight and organizing the troops, was my take. He pulls the Orders together and uses their combined might to push the undead back so that the story can shift from despair to hope.

This, of course, highlights how unfortunate it is that the PC is not the big hero, that for many of us we unfortunately have to let Trahearne get all the credit while we do the work, and that the Orders are, despite their bravado and brains, pretty darn juvenile in their refusal to work together until we come along and make them.

----

But this was originally about the first trip to the island. I agree wholeheartedly that Talon was a bad character. I didn’t care that he died, though I did find it an amusing and failed attempt to get me to appreciate the character. He really deserved it, to be honest.

And the trebuchet bit should have just been something you interacted with, like in GW 1 missions, that didn’t need aiming. No matter how long you take or how often you miss, the situation does not get worse on the island. So just remove the mini game and make it a player-triggered mini-custscene.

This mission emphasized that killing mobs isn’t often the goal of personal story missions. I guess the idea is to not let people grind the undead for XP, but *shrug* I wasn’t really motivated to fight enemies in personal story missions anymore after the mission.

The fact that the three groups trying to save the world need the player character and the chosen one Trahearne to tell them to work together -- as normal behavior for them is to mock each other and fight/argue -- is really, really dumb.

The personal stories have a decent enough start, in my opinion, but lose their appeal once you get into the Pact territory.

This is true for all warriors. The sound is triggered at each 1/3 of the adrenaline bar. Unfortunately, when you are losing adrenaline, it also triggers. It should be ignored on adrenaline loss, or they should add a loss sound if they want a sound there. As it stands it’s just silly.

You must hate the jumping puzzles in a few of the zones, then.

Vistas are amazing, and most of the fun is figuring out the path. What "mouse movements" are you talking about? It’s all about running and jumping in the right direction or taking it slow when appropriate to see where the best place to stand and jump from is. Being close to a vista but trying to force your way to it using a path that’s not really a path can definitely be frustrating, too.

Would you be comfortable with giving an example of one that is making you angry/frustrated and how you’ve approached it so far?

edit: As someone who is so very happy that jumping around terrain was made into an actual game feature, I don’t want these to go away at all. But I also would love to see a person who doesn’t like them get a better hang of them and start to like them. I think that would be great if we can help in any way.

What I don’t get is why we have the two-person-max "cutscenes" when there are plenty of examples / instances of a more GW1-style cutscene playing out in so many of our story missions.

Just freeze my character in place so I don’t go goofin’ around when I am meant to be talking and let me and the NPCs have our talks. The meetings with the order reps in the home instance, for example, are abysmal when it cycles around to show two at a time. What is this, a Hall of Monuments trophy shelf with a max size of 2?

---

In any case, now that I’ve finally gone through most of the asura stuff, I think I have to conclude for now that the worst VA work is mostly in norn areas. I am not a fan of Felicia Day, but Zojja is pretty kitten well done. They sylvari have mostly been a treat, and I really like the Charr acting overall. Those norn, though, they easily sound like the most bored, reading-from-a-script people a lot of the time -- at least the women do, that is (don’t get me wrong, there’s good work there, this is just a high-level generalization).

Female norn NPCs are so meh.
"I pray to the spirits, but they seldom/rarely answer." OK so apparently there are multiple actresses who deliver this line. But one of them, oh man, one of them sounds like she’s so out-of-her-mind bored, delivering this line as flat as possible. This is on top of how... odd this is as a greeting. "OK, thanks for telling me, I guess? Can I buy that salvage kit now?"

I am runnin’ around Hoelbrak now and not getting the line to trigger off an NPC, but there’s that one where she basically sounds happy and then more or less goes "Oh, it’s you, what do you need?" haha wow what a jerk

So the filter is set up to try to catch people dumping spaces into swear words and phrases and making it even more needlessly complicated to post an actual post. Good times...

What’s wrong with limiting the filter to the exact words and just manually warning the few folks who go out of their way to get around it? You’ll never get a simple forum word filter to intelligently parse a word/phrase/sentence, so this just generates a lot of false positives and tosses "kitten" into weird places.

As I am not you and cannot accurately tell you what you’ll have fun doing, I say make one of each. Use a character slot, pick a class and race combo, play it for a few levels, bank your money, delete, try another, repeat.

Alternatively, take the character into the mist to get boosted to 80 to get a preview of the traits and skills available. I did this after I made my mesmer to see which classes I thought I might want to play the most (for example, it helped me realize I wouldn’t be able to replicate my GW 1 necro experience, so I shelved that class for the time being. Shame, as that was my first and oldest GW1 character. Spiteful Spirit is still one of my favourite skills).

I mean, I am glad that DE try to get together and work through things in the story modes of dungeons, but it feels like a big fork in the story with one side having all the appeal and build up and the other coming from nowhere and feeding into an NPC’s ego.

I’ve noticed this as well, for what it’s worth, on some enemies. Rather than an enemy getting pulled back to its spawn area by the magic tether on its leash, sometimes a mob will sort of step one or two paces out of your default melee range and keep doing it if you adjust your own position. I just keep chasing them / snare them; not sure what else can be done. And it’s not like every mob of the same type will do it.

Allowing folks to vendor through Black Lion

If the vendor+1 prices are merely folks dumping inventory as they quest/explore/etc., then just stop letting us use the trading post anywhere and require us to talk to a trading post NPC. We already have to in order to claim our winnings/money.

I vendor at vendors. I only sell things that might make me a profit on the TP, and I easily carry those few items with me back to a city or outpost. I keep reading that these listings are because the TP is a free, anywhere-you-want vendor, so it seems worthwhile to just dump that feature.

How can "some folks like it and others not", i.e. a comment on opinion, apply when the OP is about the story failing to follow its own sequence of events correctly, i.e. a failure to align facts?

Dungeons: Just not finding them fun at all.

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: synk.6907

synk.6907

A problem for any MMO is having the single-player experience help prepare for the group play. In GW1, you always had a party, even if it was full of AI. So when real players were involved, running a dungeon became even easier. Here, you can easily handle groups of mobs in the regular world, but two or three in a dungeon against your group of five and suddenly folks are corpse-running all over the place.

Granted, you pick yourself up and dust off and give’em Hell and win, but the point I am making is that, in a general sense, there’s a steep learning curve between general PvE and dungeon PvE*.

* I’m willing to bet those with a decent chunk of their time invested in PvP fair much better, on average, their first time in dungeons.

I don’t have all of the solutions or anything, but it’s my guess this contributes to people not having fun.

Me? I view it as a challenge and have enjoyed it, both when I have died a lot and when I have had smooth sailing groups.

For the love of all that is good in the land, plz shut up vendors!

in Crafting

Posted by: synk.6907

I’d like to add a suggestion, as I believe the issue is that whenever a vendor near a crafting station is being talked to (by anyone), they will be prompted to speak. If this speech was instanced to the player that is talking to the npc, then I believe it would be easier to live with them.

I’d like to chime in and bump this idea — making the greetings just play for the player talking to the NPC. I really enjoy the NPC chatter all over, even if I’ve heard the back-and-forths before (it really makes the NPCs more alive to see them wandering around and bickering or joking or whatever), but I hate hearing the same couple of vendor lines as people constantly barter with an NPC next to a crafting station or whatnot.

Oh god that bonus was considered canon? I always thought it was out of place and random...

Well, it was at least an amusing nod to the mission+bonus by the author.

In any case it’s been my assumption that, for story purposes, your hero is included in a party of your friends/henchman/hero NPCs all rolled together (obviously ignoring the MMO aspect of the game for the main story). They should be able to sufficiently dance around characters’ names well enough to still give our GW1 players a nod alongside Cynn, Devona, Mhenlo, Koss, Gwen, et al.

Kormir?

in Lore

Posted by: synk.6907

synk.6907

Agreed with the above being pointed out. It wasn’t killing Abaddon that made a person a god -- it was making the choice a mortal could make to do something about the huge, tremendous outpouring of energy and knowledge.
Also it didn’t "only happen in Elona". Kormir’s priests/priestesses are just as prevalent throughout Kryta as the other gods’.

All of the six human gods got a human racial skill. I realize this is going to be a generalization, but I suspect hers and Balthy’s are the only ones that will see widespread use. But that’s just a mechanics issue.

i just started my mesmer, but as i understand it ( i am not sure, so u have to test it urself by standing still)

confusion build is useless in PvE, but amazing in PvP,
Condition build is the oppositte, it is amazing in PvE and i dont know about PvP because the stacks are random.

reason: people attack fast and confusion eats away at there lives, unless you find a smart guy that takes it away, in PvE, monsters slow and I am not sure if they take dmg from the confusion, but they mostly take dmg from your basic impact attak, but as i understand your main damage is from stacking confusion which doesnt help you in PvE. so your better off switching to another build.

After 56 levels of playing a mesmer so far, I don’t feel I have any problems with PvE enemies failing to kill themselves thanks to my confusion. It only got better as I got more traits to make confusion pop on them virtually endlessly.

The two-characters-talking style of cutscene is really bad, imo, but I’m guessing there’s not much that could be done, if anyone was even willing on the team, about that at this point.

I’d like to see more variety in emotes. I know, real high priority, right? ha. I am assuming more are coming, based on how some I’ve tried don’t tell me "unknown command" at the moment. But it would be nice to have more than one dance per race. An MMO that does this "right", in my opinion, is Star Trek Online. There are several available, and you are free to perform any of them.

OK real stuff now.
Let us move more of the interface around. While I never felt the need to customize the UI with addons like in other games, part of that was due to GW1 letting me resize and reposition virtually everything. Being able to size and move the chat and map/compass is a nice start to this.

I mean, in general I do like the UI layout, but it would be nice to know I could alter it if I preferred.

Per-character hotkeys could be great, too.

The Trading Post UI really needs visual work. The font is terrible, things can’t be resized, and there’s no means to preview items. Functionally it does what I’d expect, though.

Yup. the city is definitely capable of handling gates to another expansion or two’s cities. And the Orders [Priory, Vigil, Whispers] seem to have gates at their HQs that aren’t usable yet. My current guess is for linking headquarters in different continents.

also, for anyone who wants to know, this is the map of southeastern Kessex Hills. as you can see, there are 2 options for which Waypoint to use. if you go with the one i used, there are ogres most of the way ’til the water, and in the section of water you land in, there’s a Veteran Sea Scorpion (i think that’s the right name), so be either quick or strong.

I’ve wanted to go out into that floating castle ever since the first time I walked out there in GW 1 [probably one of the times when I was killing Verata] and took a few screenshots.
