Steel Tide personal story

synk.6907

I have been experiencing this as well.
After firing the first couple of shots with the tank, any attempt to move its turret and continue to engage enemies has the camera moving to whatever direction my character is facing and controls spit back to the default character controls from the tank controls.

The tank itself appears to continue processing the last order, turning its turret forever.

Trying to regain tank control results in the camera jumping around a little and then the same thing happening.

Completing this mission required use of the mortars and personally running up and pulling the giant to kill it.

I remember in other MMO’s I played.. not gonna mention

The GZ spam in Guild chat when some1 achieved something… that was kinda awsome… even if it was like “Overall Gold Gain 1 Achieved”

That stuff got ridiculous. Someone would read their mail and proc an achievement and usher in tons of “grats” lines. And then there’s the people who run addons to automatically say something whenever an achievement is reported.

I, for one, am quite happy that others’ achievements aren’t spammed to me, though I totally am happy for people who are proud whenever they get one.

Bad heal fix

synk.6907

No, it says “players’ minions and NPCs”

That means the ones YOU own, not the random NPCs that may be accompanying you. But it does likely mean that it will prioritize your minions over your party members. Personally as a minion necro, I love this, now I can use my staff to keep my minions alive without random other people stealing my regen proc.

Yeah, this is how I’ve interpreted it, as well. When you’re running about, especially in story or solo, you likely want to heal your summons and not the random folks that might be around you.

I suspect this won’t harm your ability to heal party members.

For example, when you have the dagger on your hip (sheathed), it’s kind of folded up into a smaller shape. When your character enters combat/draws the dagger, the blade unfolds to its extended position. Sadly you don’t get any idea of what this looks like in the preview window before purchasing, as that only shows it extended.

Interestingly, I wasn’t able to quickly find a video to show it, but the wiki article for the Whispers weapons links to a good pair of pictures already: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/69809-dagger-skins-lack-of-good-ones-post/#entry2000011

Grinding isn’t fun. EotN had some awesome stuff in it, but it also plopped in a ton of grinding to make it Grind Wars. Titles reigned supreme, as did the collecting of drops for weapon skins. GW2 feels very similar to Eye of the North. I look at what I need to do for the sets and stuff I want on each of my characters, and I know I have a grind ahead of me.

But it shouldn’t just be handed to me, either, so I don’t know. But being able to get the armor skins I wanted at my pace / without necessarilly requiring others was nice.

45 characters is the maximum length for a topic title on the forums. It is this way to prevent titles from being cut off when viewing a thread. This is not a bug, this is by design.

I’ll be honest, as someone who spends a lot of time on these forums... I would much rather have a cut-off title then the 45 character limit.

I wouldn’t. Before they had any limit, thread titles were only visible in the URI as shown in the browser’s address bar. In the forum display and the thread display itself, the text was cut short with an ellipsis. There were plenty of times when the title didn’t quite make sense as a result.

Heck it still happens now with some thread titles.

What questions don't impact story?

in Personal Story

Posted by: synk.6907

synk.6907

I’ll attempt a run-through summary of the choices available and what they do, maybe that will help?

Profession
Everyone answers a professions-specific question for a piece of gear that helps customize what you look like (e.g. necro mask, guardian shoulders or helm, ranger pet, etc.). You can keep this gear skin via transmutes or discard it at your leisure.
Does not affect story.

---

Personality
Everyone answers the same personality question.
This affects some of the dialog choices you have and how some NPCs might react to you (such as a person saluting or waving when you are near). You can change your personality via the many dialog choices presented as you interact with NPCs and complete story missions.
Does not affect story.

---

Initial Personal Story Missions
Every race has a question that affects the initial personal story missions after the intro tutorial and completing your first renown heart. These also influence your home instance and, while slightly different in the details more or less determines who you typically "hang out with" until you start getting more involved with the famous NPCs.
- humans: childhood
- asura: college
- charr: warband
- sylvari: vision in dream
- norn: character quality

Directly influences Part 1 of your character’s storyline and which missions/mission paths are available.

---

Second Story Set
The other question helps identify what your second set of personal story missions are and further connect your character to the major NPCs of his or her race.
- humans: regret (lost sister, circus, etc.)
- charr: background of sire
- asura: first well-known creation
- norn: regret from a previous moot
- sylvari: most important of Ventari’s teachings

Directly influences Part 2 of the story and what missions/paths are available.

---

"Wildcard" Question
Each race has an additional question, and these are the only ones that have a chance to do "nothing" currently.
- human: god selection = no bearing on anything yet
- charr: sparring partner = which NPC hangs out with you in the racial story missions (i.e. up until about level 30); can provide additional perspective on other characters, mission events, and the like as well as some jokes
- asura: previous mentor = nothing, except maybe some references to your style of approaching problems
- sylvari: cycle = alters some dialogue, NPC presence in early missions
- norn: spirit = nothing currently

So I guess really for the norn, asura, and human character creation it’s just fluff for now. It’s minor and affects some details for the charr and sylvari, but overall it’s still kind of fluff for them as well.
Kind of but not really affects story??

what cycle you were born in for Sylvari, advisor for Norn. Sparring partner for Charr chooses the character who will stuck with you from 1 to 30.

Granted, I haven’t leveled a sylvari too far, but even in the early missions some of the dialogue brought up the cycle I chose. And the first mission brings in my cycle’s “leader” as an NPC. I have not read about the later sylvari missions to avoid spoilers, but I expect little things like this are present throughout, making the story not rely solely on which dream you chose.

We don't like Trahearne *Spoiler Warning* [merged]

in Personal Story

Posted by: synk.6907

synk.6907

Every single named NPC you meet along the way as you complete your racial story elements and as you deal with the Orders and then the Pact is better to get along with, more interesting in what they say and do and how they interact with the player character and one another, display a broader range of emotion and perspective, and are more entertaining than Trahearne in this game. His story and concept has a lot of potential, sure, and has good parts, but it falls so very short.

But the personal story writing** at around level 60 and above doesn’t hold a candle to all of the story elements prior (racial/character background, Order recruitment and mentoring, racial sympathy) and lacks many of the cool little details of the open world, cities, and dynamic events. And it’s mostly Trahearne’s story then, making him worse.

** to be fair, I liked almost everything about the various NPCs you meet and work with on the Pact missions. They were a total blast, be they ones met previous or new, and I feel like I’ve grown close to many of them [making some of the potential deaths in the storyline really uspeetting]. I guess it’s mostly just the Trahearne parts, which are honestly a large part of these missions.

Commander Icon Hatred?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: synk.6907

synk.6907

Yeah, it’s more a clutter thing, I believe.

I’ve enjoyed seeing the icon when out with the zerg in Orr or in wubwub. It’s a great means to easily rally people, regardless of whose giving the good advice in /map or /team.

But in cities, such as LA, they serve no purpose. As more folks decide to get the books or guilds pool together for them, there is definitely the potential for many of these to be floating all over the map display. Since the UI provides no way for a player to choose to see these icons, it will remain an annoyance. While I bear no ill will to any commanders, I don’t like that another player is given control over elements of my UI. It’s a minor issue, to be sure, but it’s still an issue.

It’s nothing worth messaging someone or being rude about, though. That’s just unfortunate.

You have a legendary and think crafting is "too expensive"?
Note that I am not knocking the legendary, but there’s plenty of expense involved in crafting one. The money/materials/time needed for leveling crafting professions is really miniscule in comparison.

In any case, if there aren’t many people around and you feel that a DE is too much to solo, there’s nothing wrong with moving on and just completing the rest of the map / other DEs. It’s not like the NPCs will permanently die or forever lose ground to the enemies, and you can always do them another time.

Well, I’m sure there are some, but I suspect you’ve just been quite unlucky up to now.
And we can all bear with some technical limitations here and there :-)

There’s a vista up on the volcano’s mouth in Mount Maelstrom. While there are plenty of spaces around the mountain’s sides that are quite climbable, often you are met with an invisible wall (as in it’s not just a matter of not being able to complete a jump up to an edge or a slippery slope preventing your character from keeping a footing and, thus, falling) so that there’s basically only one real way up to it.

It’s true that I haven’t met too many instances like this, so it’s kind of glaring when it happens, but they’re are some there that aren’t just at the edges of maps to contain a zone.

I don’t think it’s worth crusading over, though. The world is far more explorable than other MMOs, as the fact that we have vistas and PoIs should built into the game should also attest.

Last suggestion about choosing the class

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: synk.6907

synk.6907

Engineer is the only class I haven’t played yet. I don’t know if any of my answers would change once I do go through that class.

I had to shorten all of my responses, as I am wordy and I guess we have post length limits.

1) Which is the profession(s) you’d like to play with in a dungeon?
All of them. While I don’t think some are as easy as others to run dungeons, I’ve never created a character without a desire to, at least a little bit, hit up the dungeon play.

Likewise, I am happy to see diversity in what classes are in my party in a dungeon. So far.

2) Which profession(s) you think is/are easier to play in PvE and why?
Guardian, warrior, and ranger are the easier ones, though I am focusing on the solo/leveling/farming aspects with this response.

Guardians can just stand in anything and, through their traits and skills, face-tank typical mob damage even in large groups.

Warriors output pretty ridiculous damage. While I dodge more on a warrior than on a guardian, warriors have excellent options at range as well as in-close and can shred through PvE mobs in maps.

While I have not gotten my ranger to 80 yet, the ability to send in two pets into combat and fire from extreme range has made the experience really straightforward. I mean, there’s a reason why bots are practically all rangers, I guess.

3) Which profession(s) is/are more rewarding for the skill you show with them?
Elementalist and mesmer have, to me, reflected more of the effort you put into controlling and mastering them. Both have a sort of fluid feel to their combat once you get going, including the efforts you make to kite and avoid damage while tearing into enemies and the ways you can support allies and friends. I think there are rewards for skilled play in every class, but because of how I feel in answering the next question I think mesmer and elementalist "reward" skilled play more.

4) Which profession(s) is/are the most difficult to play?
I think mesmer and elementalist are the most difficult.

I was leveling characters, especially at lower levels (under 40), I had more times where I was in dire straits with an ele or mesmer than with any of the others, especially before I learned how to better play both.

Thief had some terrible spots in personal story missions for me, but I never had that problem in other PvE.

5) Which is the profession(s) that,in your opinion, shine over the other in PvP?
I have not done sufficient PvP to answer this question.

6) Which profession(s) can draw the aggro on itself/theirselves the best?
Hmm. That’s an interesting question.

The short answer is that I believe this is largely dependent on who does the most damage.

For groups of enemies, dump your AoE as quick as possible. Bursts of damage work great regardless of class. For champions and bosses, dodge attacks in close and go for solid, high sustained damage.

I’d love to say that, similar to GW1, your armor type/stats and if you were the first enemy in range contribute to this, but since we don’t have "true tanks" in this style of play I don’t think that’s true.

7) Which profession(s) has/have the highest dps capability?
any of them

Though I do feel that warriors are sitting at the top right now, with probably thieves close behind. We can’t be certain of this due to no means to accurately record damage (the combat log is a joke), but aside from attacking the Master of Damage NPC in Guild Wars 1 we never cared about it there, either.

Any class can pump out sufficient damage, though.

8!) Do you think people should play the profession based on how them like the design (without even playing the game) or based on their ingame preferences?
People should play whichever class(es) align the most with what they want to see when running around Tyria. To me, it’s equally valid to pick a class because you like their armors, their spell animations, and their design as it is to pick a class because you like the damage numbers you can toss out, the way the class skill and utilities work, or the traits they have.

synk.6907

Bunker (see it used with ele and warriors)
Blink (not sure what profession)
Vertical/horizontal progression
PBAoE (something area of effect?)

Bunker is often used to describe trait/stat builds with the intent to be very "tanky" and self-sufficient, being able to defend against a lot of damage and support. In other words, a tough shell to crack, much like a bunker.

Blink is a mesmer skill that allows us mesmers to teleport a short distance horizontally (but cannot be used to climb or cross gaps in, say, a cliff).

Vertical progression usually means introducing new gear and items that are better than the last and having players continually advance among the ranks of equipment without necessarilly ever reaching the top [as it keeps being added and extended]. Most MMOs have vertical progression in them.

Horizontal usually means that the things players go for and get on their characters are more for cosmetic or personal interests due to a more level "power" structure (meaning one type of armor wasn’t better than another, instead offering a new look or customization of the character; the stats and upgrades on the equipment are essentially the same at max level) of the equipment. GW1 was a great example of relying mostly on horizontal progression.

PBAoE: I used to think that it stood for "place-based area of effect", meaning that the AoE occurs at a specified place. But that place is typically where the caster is, and being able to target where an AoE goes is different. So, correctly, it is "point-blank area of effect", as it occurs only around the caster.

Hmm, where is that? I want to check it out -- if it’s as you describe, perhaps there’s dialogue before it to set up a joke?

There’s a harp-sounding bit of looping music in The Grove near the center/top area. It’s quite peaceful, but at first I was confused due to not having the background music on when playing.

The monastery in Queensdale used to play this weird sound when you were around it, like machines or something were going to work underneath the ground (different from the spaceship sounds of the Underworld portals). I don’t think that happens anymore, though.

I recently decided to actually play my ranger, and I am hearing “I’ll revive you soon” or whatever a lot lately. I am the worst.

I really hate that Norn line:

“I pray to the Spirits of the Wild, but they rarely answer.”

Just drives me nuts, really.

We marked those lines for a rewrite because the norn don’t really pray to the spirits. For whatever reason they didn’t get addressed (tools bug? oversight? budget?) so we’re sort of stuck with them for now. We may change some of them the next time the actors come back.

Oh man, I really hope you get a chance to change them/replace them. Even aside from any in-game lore errors, this line always seems to be delivered so kitten and lazily [you’d think something like this would be jarring or important to the character saying it] and also just kind of comes out of nowhere (why is the merchant I have accosted to engage in trade suddenly informing me about her spiritual issues?!).

I realize this is late, but at least here’s an answer:
It was for new purchases of the game -- so if you didn’t have the game at all, you could get the Digital Deluxe edition for no more than you would pay if you just bought the base version.

Those of us who already have the game could not use this sale to add the Digital Deluxe upgrade for free to our accounts.
