I had this happen in GW1 one evening. My guild gave me a lot of... interesting responses as they tried to decipher what I was typing.
Unfortunately I cannot remember what keys I had pressed to cause this to happen, and it didn’t seem to affect anything other than Guild Wars. I do remember logging out and back in a few times with no change until I tracked down what I had pressed.
So I guess look to see what language options are on your computer and what potential shortcuts would trigger them.
While you’re waiting to get on your friend’s server, you could also try out joining her across servers / meeting in Overflow.
While the clanging tin is a little weaksauce as far as sounds go, I’m more annoyed by the cloth "fwip" sound effect my mesmer is getting whenever I jump around on her.
The sylvari are too full of joy to know how to properly cry and instead are just mimicking what they’ve seen.
No I don’t know why you aren’t getting any audio, but I also don’t have a male sylvari to see if I experience the same.
Perhaps it’s an issue of the number of people in there with you at the time? When I’ve gone in, I’ve found large groups of other players running about. As a result, doors seemed to spawn in more than one place and spew forth a lot more enemies. I have some screenshots where a group of us split from the main cluster, found a door, and got owned by superior numbers. I think there wouldn’t have been so many if the number of players in the area was lower.
But if you just mean that there are only a few champions, OK, guess I can’t offer any insight there.
I finally did it yesterday.
Asura mesmer 5 times.
I feel like I could do it whenever. It’s so easy now. It’s funny how difficult it was but once you get it, you get. It’s awesome. Thanks for this awesome jp!
If you wanted an added challenge. one thing you can try for is going fast enough to have time to loot the chests on the way to the top.
But I agree -- the times I was all, "uggggh" when I was still learning the paths and timing seemed silly once I did it.
Mostly Halloween items and a green or two each run for me so far.
Well, there was that one just now where the group leader left and it kicked the rest of us to LA before we could loot the chest. I bet something cool was waiting for me that time.
At this point I’ve done it at least once per race, no speed boosts involved.
The charr can be tricky due to running on all fours; I had to adjust to stop misjudging when I was actually on the edge of platforms for optimal jumps.
Boots for everyone!
Being asked to change character name before i could login?

It’s because your character’s first name is "Lucifer." I am pretty sure that’s not an allowed name due to the religious connotations, etc. (Naming Policy).
It’s very likely someone could have flagged you when they ran across the name. Not every name or character is going to be seen immediately, so I wouldn’t take the fact that it didn’t happen until today as a sign that it was OK before. It’s more that it wasn’t caught.
For what it’s worth, it’s not a punishment or that you really did anything "bad", it’s just a naming policy issue.
But I am not staff, so I suppose I shouldn’t say that with such conviction. But I am pretty sure. ;)

I just want to add that being pretty intoxicated has not prevented me from logging in and doing this in one try again on my asura.
So stick with it, everyone! You’ll get it eventually.
I like it. Well done.
I see that some various threads got merged, so I have lost some of the threads of conversation since my earlier visit to the forum.
However it seems a prominent thread still is the "large folks are in the way" bit.
I did this on an asura and tried to get a feel for running in the crowd and camera issues. But neither really impeded me. I am sympathetic to folks getting frustrated and not making much progress in the puzzle, but it’s difficult to agree that it’s due to other players or poor design. I’m also not claiming that makes me "right", but if many of us are happy with it and many of us are not happy with it it helps to try to step back and attempt to be objective about it where relevant. Hence why I re-did it on a tiny asura to try to get all the "bad" characteristics of the puzzle.
Jumping puzzles aren’t for everyone, I would say. Perhaps not everyone will ever get this one.
And maybe some practice in other puzzles, forcing yourself to go faster and faster, will help you shrug off the nagging feeling about speed in this one, helping you relax and make those jumps with confidence. When I sat back in my chair, for example, and did my best not to get frustrated was when I was less likely to make silly mistakes or early jumps.
went back to it this afternoon
Having done it with a norn, I wanted to also do it with an asura and try to see it from the perspective of my fellow players who have been posting about how awful being small in the group is.
I did it in a handful of tries.
Asura elementalist, smallest size, no speed boosts
So
I just did this on my asura in only a few tries.
I wanted to see how this was with "fat" characters in the way.
It really didn’t affect me too much. I mean, my character is always in the center-ish of the screen, so I had a pretty good feel for where I was even if another character was clipping into me or over me visually.
Interestingly I more often had humans on top of me than norn or charr, as most of those folks this afternoon kept falling in the earlier parts and not coming along for the later ones.
The camera did spazz out slightly and zoom in close and then pop back out once or twice in the area right after everyone is forced to wait for the rubble to spawn in place, yet I haven’t yet had that happen with larger characters. Which is odd, I originally would have assumed larger characters’ cameras would flip out more.
I am not posting this to tell anyone having trouble that they are bad or that they need to learn to play. However if folks can keep providing anecdotal evidence about how "bad" the puzzle is, I feel it is fair to provide the same about how it is not.
@Whiskey: OK, that is just downright unfortunate and terrible. I am glad I haven’t seen that.
Ah, gotcha.
It’s hard because you want to give everyone a chance to enjoy the content, but you want to reward the people who actually took the time to master it.
Not making it part of the Halloween meta-achievement was a smart move in that sense.
Warriors have a trait called Warrior’s spirit, which is a ’run faster while weilding a melee weap’ In the discipline tree.
Except we don’t have our weapons out when doing this. So I don’t know if that trait actually comes into play. Admittedly, I didn’t test it on my warrior, and 10% isn’t all that much.
But in any case speed boosts aren’t needed to have the time to get through.
But if you do use one and you aren’t used to having the boost, be careful -- you may out-pace yourself!
EricGORE, that was my point. It looks like you’re trying to make that point to me, but that’s what I was saying -- it’s a simple puzzle if you take away the mist.
For my own curiosity, are folks who have camera issues here using "Free camera"? Or maybe it’s just a matter of the angle of aim.
The camera spazzes generally happen at the beginning of the puzzle proper for me, where parts of the tower break off. If you look at the course, there’s very good reason for that: there are debris scattered not that far above. The camera then goes in-and-out in rapid succession, throwing the screen into confusion.
Yeah, I get why it would do that, I just had no runs with camera issues myself despite being zoomed out pretty far. I’ll play around with it some; I actually want to make it do that. I hate when the camera collides with junk as you play, so I would like to see how awful this section of the jumps becomes with seizure mode activated.
I can do the jump puzzle part FINE and smooth until I reach this part where its stairs connected to two beams.. i get to the end of the beams and there’s nowhere to go… A few of us just cannot see where to jump or go, Ive tried looking around and everything is too high! Any help much appreciated!
You make a leap of faith down to a cog platform that has a chest on it. If no one else has been there ahead of you, additional platforms spawn in as you fall that you use to continue the puzzle.
If you get there too slowly, this platform may be under the green mist already.
Mad King's Tower is Too Hard (edit: It is hard but i mostly posted this topic out of frustration)

Perhaps it may be of some help to find another jumping puzzle -- specifically one with some nice jumps on it and not just weird paths -- you know you can do and try to force yourself to go faster as a means of practice.
Also relax and try to keep a smile on your face. Frustration will only make you more likely to jump too early or accidentally dodge-roll off a beam, etc. Or step back and take a break and try it again later.
I swore aloud a few times and got frustrated, but that was mostly due to messing up jumps I had done in previous attempts.
The speed at which you NEED to do the first part shows you have no skill when it comes to designing levels. We all know it is supposed to increase in difficulty the close you get to the end, but this one starts like a hassle, which pretty much burns most people who try to get it. They never even get close and it feels so annoying.
it is as if they put the final part of the puzzle at the start just to annoy everyone
Wait, the bit after the cutscene but before the forced pause? As in the easiest part of the entire puzzle?
Slow down the green goop, doesn’t have to be a lot, just give us some time to move our darn mouses.
I mean heck, top down view zooms in when trying to jump because something is above my head, or too close to the side of me.
If the "timer" wasn’t included or made much slower, this puzzle would be quite simple to complete, I feel. There are a few tricky jumps, sure, but that’s more due to not being able to stand there and gauge them at your leisure than their being some kind of wacky angle.
If you can make it to the part where you fall to a chest without the green gas getting you, you’ll definitely get it eventually -- the rest can actually be done at a slower pace.
As for the camera, I am certainly not trying to claim you are wrong, but I am surprised to see that. I have definitely had the camera spazz out inside caves or tight, indoor spaces, but I often have a zoomed-out, above-player angle for jumping puzzles. In particular, I have had no camera collision while working the tower. For my own curiosity, are folks who have camera issues here using "Free camera"? Or maybe it’s just a matter of the angle of aim.
norn warrior, no boosts of any kind
I kept forgetting norn jumps look like they will be shorter than they are due to heavily playing my human mesmer recently, so I had some terrible timing on some of the more sensitive spots for a while.
I wonder how silly asura will feel by comparison.
This was fun.
Shootin’ the "kitten" with my fellow players between attempts and learning from my mistakes, pushing myself to always be at the front of the pack at the beginning, and trying out both forks in the later portion to compare them resulted in quite a satisfied experience at the top after lootin’ the chest.
This is like that one ride at the park I happily get in line for again and again after testing out most of the others.
I’d love to be a middleman in one of these trades both a) to help people actually complete an honest trade and b) apply the condition that I get to see the two involved complete their legendaries. My broke kitten is quite a way off from crafting/attaining any of those.
In any case, I wish you the best in finding a trade partner!
1. Will you or will you not be buying black lion trading company or random number generation materials again?
I haven’t yet, and don’t plan to do so in the future.
2. Did you buy them in the past?
Nope
3. If you would not buy trading post material/gamble, would you support direct to buy weapon skins and what general price do you find acceptable from a business standpoint both as a customer and realizing that they must make money as a business?
Yes, as I did in GW 1 on a few occassions.
I thought those prices were fair -- seven dollars for an account-unlocked costume was amazing. I would jump at that again -- the Witch outfit has me considering it already despite being a little more expensive and, as I understand it, usable by only one character at a time.
4. Do you believe that future events will also be handled with random number generation to make profit based on limited time item acquisition?
Sure do
It’s worked in other MMOs, unfortunately.
5. If you believe that the future events will be handled in the same manner, does this realization negatively effect your trust of Arena Net in regard to handling micro transactions for permanent content?
I’m not sure what you’re getting at here with "trust of ArenaNet". I won’t like it, and it won’t motivate me to participate, but I don’t feel I will think they are somehow messing up everything. Ultimately, the affected items are just for fun and don’t impact gameplay at all.
6. Did you obtain a skin or whatever it is you were looking to get from the black lion trading chests? From the Mad King Chests?
Nope, but if I get any more free keys I’ll give it a go.
7. Have you bought any of the direct purchase, set priced halloween items. If so, will you be buying more?
Not yet. Thinking about it, but also kind of turned off by the Perfect World lockbox style of things. Still, those costumes are well done. I hope they continue making more of those, as they did in GW1.
I was going to chuckle at the idea that there is "prestige" behind something you might randomly get or you may choose to spend gold on, but then I thought about how none of us really needs a luxury car or supercar when a generic sedan will do the same job. So I guess grats to all those who have already or will get the skins! I look forward to running into them as I play.
I think it’s safe to say no one will know if these skins are unique to this year or not. In GW1, things like the gingerbread focus, peppermint shields, and so forth were the same every year, but that may not be true here in GW2, especially with the boxes promoting key sales. If you’re not looking to purchase them to keep, then I would wager it is likely worth the risk of buying them now to resell later, after they are no longer attainable outside of the trading post.
Tangentially, I lament not being able to access my wings from a GW1 costume set here in GW2 :(.
In GW1, at least you get to see everyone there and present despite only the party lead getting to speak. And then the group could click to skip, provided all agreed to it.
In SWTOR, they have a really neat system wherein everyone gets to pick a response and then it seems to roll and randomly pick one of the party members to deliver the player-spoken line. It’s pretty cool that everyone gets to participate in their "dungeons" like that, but that’s certainly a different system than here.
Here, we have the two-person display over artwork. Since in dungeons a player who skips through the cutscene will see her teammates standing still with the cinematic icon over their heads and has to wait for them anyway -- i.e. party members are not all watching the cutscene together, like in GW1 -- I would love to see your suggestion taken to heart if possible. That way for each of us we see ourselves at the forefront in the storytelling.
So this thread has me wondering how PvP with two (or three, for WvWvW) ships broadsiding each other while players swing across to do battle might work.
PvE could throw the mechanic into a scenario with, say, one of Zhaitan’s undead ships or, as mentioned, some deep sea dragon-related monster.
It could be a lot of fun.
And here I was glad to see it stop teleporting me through terrain / the ground. I will have to keep an eye on how often it sends me backward vs. a random other direction.
I’m very curious in how this “human” holiday is going to be celebrated by the other races. Just doesn’t make sense with what we know.
Didn’t the update claim that even among humans no one but children actually believes in him anymore?
I think the weird events in LA, which have the Priory investigating them with gusto, and the doors, etc. will get everyone’s attention, human holiday or not.
Whoever said Drakkar’s a dragon? It could be a corrupted now-extinct sea creature. The thing always looked like a huge kitten mandragor to me though.
Speaking of them... during the headstart weekend, while running about in the world, I lamented to my friend that "this was not an authentic Guild Wars experience" due to the lack of mandragor attacks.
Those buggers *shakes fist*! I know they’re out there, somewhere, plotting my demise.
You’d have a different problem, then -- classes that only use one of those items may get an extra item. For example, a warrior might want to dual-wield axes and use two. A necromancer might want the axe mainhand; does the necro also get two?
edit: Unless the idea is for offhands (focus, torch, warhorn, shield) as well as one-handed weapons to all just be half the cost of greatswords, hammers, bows, and staves. Then I guess the player is free to choose.
Perhaps the reward token itself should come in two flavours: one that’s good for one two-handed item and then one that’s good for any desired pairing of one-handed weapons. The vendor would have to be altered to fit this logic, and I still wonder if there’s ways this might somehow be exploited, but perhaps it might help alleviate the annoyance of only being able to skin half of a weapon set with the token.
Though, to be fair, this is the same way it works with the token at the end of each campaign in GW1. Fortunately daggers always came as a pair, but warriors and paragons who used shields and any caster using a one-hander and a focus had to steal an alt’s token or buy another player’s if they wanted multiple items.

Seeing the choices you made in character creation play out in the earlier portions of the story definitely makes them very enjoyable. I certainly understand how it’s quite difficult to account for every race and the various "paths" within each race when fleshing out the Order portions, though.
For us alt-a-holics, at least our characters aren’t all humans from Ascalon venturing out into the world every time. ;)
Stone cold, Cappy. Stone cold.
And I see what you did there, Keiran.
Hmmm. I’m not much for making bad jokes myself, though I do hope he still makes fun of dwarves despite there being virtually none around.
This one seems more relevant now:
"I know you mortals are always interested in the future so I will give you a little preview."
"Two hundred years from now..."
"YOU ARE ALL DEAD! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA"
I eagerly await being killed for screwing up an emote or failing to laugh at the right time. And seeing how a couple centuries has affected the Mad King’s sense of humor.
Also I randomly found some toilet paper outside Beetletun to throw around. Perhaps that was mentioned in notes somewhere, but it was a neat little thing to find while running through the world. Little touches like that are definitely one of the great characteristics of how Anet throws parties.
A plain rule that if you spent over 1000 gems, you get a skin for free if you didnt get any from all of the chests, not oh kitten you get another chance. Learn from Star Trek.
Learn from Star Trek?
If they learn anything from Cryptic and boxes it’ll be that players will spend ridiculous amounts of money chasing rewards.
Last night I got silver for an event I soloed. That’s when you KNOW the game doesn’t like you, lol.
You had to have been hitting the wrong mobs or something.
I am currently only level 62 on my mesmer, but I have never not gotten gold on dynamic events with groups, barring ones I came in late for or ran through. Does this suddenly stop being easy to do at 80?
Each mentor is amazing in their own way. These portions of the personal story have some of the best moments, regardless of Order chosen.
I felt this way about most of the Charr involved in your early personal storyline, as well. They’re pretty neat additions, and it’s unfortunate that they are not more involved.
You don’t move the camera constantly while on the move or in combat or mouseover targets/friendlies?
*shrug* Interesting. I certainly understand the appeal to having both hands on the keyboard for hotkeys paired with movement, but I just cluster my hotkeys around the movement keys and on extra mouse buttons as needed [10 keys in GW makes this even easier to accommodate] in MMOs.
I am almost always doing something with the mouse despite not needing it to move or activate skills. I probably could get away with the "cast at cursor" as a result, but I prefer seeing the circles first.
Perhaps if you tried mapping your keys to reflect having a hand on or able to quickly guide the mouse, you may find more use for the mouse.
However if that ultimately fails to meet your liking, I hope you are able to find a solution.
I’d prefer a scaling reward per boss; for example, 10 for killing one boss, 20 for two, and 30 for three. Each reward is collected upon the boss’s death, resulting in 60 total. This way, if 3 people kick you to bring a friend for just that last boss, their friend is only getting 10, giving them, I hope, much less incentive to kick you.
Using a system like this, if a player just wanted to kill the first boss 6 times, the amount of time/effort to do so would be equivalent to completing the entire dungeon. Or perhaps the investment would actually be more, giving the player greater incentive to complete the dungeon instead. At the same time, this provides those who contributed along the way to some reward.
I honestly don’t know why the system doesn’t award you upon dungeon completion/your exit from the dungeon in a manner like you’ve outlined instead of the current setup of dumping most of the tokens on the last boss. With the current party system and the way dungeon grouping works it’s ripe for unfortunate situations like the one described in this thread.
The second portion quoted could be a positive side effect of such a system that could help out groups having trouble getting through a dungeon / people getting in PuGs that wipe before completion still get something out of it.

During my fist visit I met grieving Gullik there. :’(
Ahh, I missed him, then. I just saw a random NPC. I definitely paid my respects, though.
I don’t like that these are a money/mat grind with no, say, instanced missions or unique fights or anything for components. I mean, kudos to those who already have the money to put these together and to those that will -- I will likely try going for a couple at some point --, but it doesn’t feel all that legendary to me to get them in this fashion.
I appreciate the work that’s gone into their designs, for sure, from the media I have seen.
250 years is a pretty short time in the history of a world, too. That’s almost like if folks in the US ran around without much of an idea about anyone involved in the establishment of the nation.
What’s weird, to me anyway, is that this mission is a cakewalk with even just one other person. Maybe I was just kiting poorly solo?
I sometimes wonder if Trahearne is a text-to-speech program rather than an actual actor.
You might say his performance is wooden.
No but really it’s one of the least engaging ones in the game.
Oh, bummer. I haven’t been in there since, like, head-start weekend to see it’s gone away. That little karma pop-up for sending scared people on their way gave me a good feeling.
Yellow creatures have nice bonus XP. I don’t see the problem.
Additional points for when an enemy mob tags one and gets his-/herself owned.
Why can’t I just go talk to the Pale Tree and have her give me a unique weapon? Worked for our hero.
The charr have been consistently the most engaging aspect of the game with respect to personal stories and good NPC lines as I explore. I first made a couple of human characters out of respect for GW1, and I like them and the ones I eventually have made of the other races, but currently I think charr are my favourite.
