Fortunately, they don’t balance thieves based on WvW as much as they do in sPvP. Once culling is fixed, I’m sure I won’t be able to CnD my way to an enemy siege line and just drop caltrops while doing no physical damage to anyone else.
The discrepancy between thieves in spvp and wvw is crazy. I jumped into spvp for the first time today. Was fighting a thief and wondering why he wasn’t going into stealth. Then I realised it was because he was actually visible for the full 3 seconds of Reveal, lol.

Yes, this is another one of those threads because I don’t think this can be stated strongly enough.
CULLING IS AN ABSOLUTE MESS.
At least before I could see our commander and our own guys, so I knew how strong we were and where the commander was going. Occasionally we’d get hit by a zerg so big it didn’t render properly until we were all dead but to be honest, those instances were far and few between (maybe 5% of fights). Of the other large battles, about 30% were of the “I can’t see much but I can generally fire in x direction and hit stuff” type. But the rest of the 60+ battles I’ve been in (65%-ish) were fine.
Now our side shrinks and grows randomly so I have no bloody idea if half our guys are dead or where the live ones are, but worse: our commander (and his/her tag) are culled from my screen about 50% of the time so I have no idea where we are going. Sometimes I have to glance at my mini-map to see where the commander is going but this isn’t a good option in battle.
My suggestion is generic race/class/weapon models and skins for players, and/or render names before you render models. Don’t bother with that silly stand-in model.
Big guilds might ask for (or mandate) 1 or 2 mesmers from their own guilds OP, but I’ve never seen 5. Methinks you are exaggerating for effect.
I wouldn’t say thief is extremely unbalanced OP. Thieves should be hit-and-run 1v1 specialists. However, they shouldn’t be able to perma-stealth with blinding powder and heartseeker – that kitten is so broken!
Imagine if a guardian found a way to get perma-retaliation by comboing off his own fields. How quickly do you think that would be fixed?

I wouldn’t say revenge as much as I would say rivalry. It’s been a while since our super close matches of the past, and many of us are looking forward to some equally fun matches when we meet again.
Personally I had a blast playing against SoR. It was the first time I saw the kind of strats you’d expect to see in the top tiers. Excellent server.

I don’t see why this tank is specifically designed to kill seige when we can do this pretty effectively just by hitting it.
Zerging is caused by players not wanting to lose. What will happen is everyone splits off in there 5 man grps. team A brings there 5 but team B doesn’t wanna lose so they bring 6. Grp A goes screw this and brings 7. ect ect
You hit the nail on the head there. In addition, the zerg forms spontaneously in response to some perceived threat or need, for example, if you know theres a 20-man enemy zerg running around, then you need at least 20 (probably more) to be able to counter it.
If theres no enemy zerg, then having smaller parties is easier.
Too funny! Numbers start to get even so SOS up and quits. They sure loved zerging all around when everyone else was outmanned. Now it’s an even field and it’s no longer the same for them…(insert excuse # 45103)
Stop trolling please. Last week we fought you off but we had to burn out a few commanders and exhaust ourselves to do it. This week we’re facing the same skill but with 10 times the numbers.
I’m not begrudging you your transfers, or your skills at wvw but trying to claim that the numbers are even when you’ve got 20 people taking a tertiary objective like the quaggans island is pretty disingenuous.
I’ve levelled and geared all 3 and I have to say, all 3 are a blast and they each have their unique set of strengths.
Like you, I pretty much ruled necros out but now I play my necro more than my ele or my mesmer.
There is a guild on SoS that has +1500 members who wvw…one guild. Do the math on your servers wvw #’s.

I actually quite like fighting the same servers week after week. It builds up camaraderie and rivalry with the other guilds and servers you’re playing and you learn a lot of new tricks. A single match-up is not really a long enough time to do this.
I agree the tier system is a bit boring though.
I like the concept of each server having an identical borderland to defend. That takes away any arguments of “your server is winning only because you have XX borderland this week!”. But some variety would be nice. Maybe 3 sets of borderlands that rotate weekly, or randomly… so each server has the same BL, but each week’s match is different.
I agree that the borderlands should be identical. If they were different or even different to the extent that each server had its own bl map, inevitably one server would have a tactical or blatant exploit advantage over another.
I don’t get your guys obssession with stamping out the zerg. Any system that you put into place that rewards one or the other is just asking to be gamed.

This is our coverage. Taken just 5 minutes ago. 2 people vs 30 PRX zerg. If they can spare 30 people to wipe 2 person then u guys ARE the stack server
I had a similar experience at the middle island on SoS bl. Was fighting 3 JQ for the temple when 30 more show up. This was NA primetime, but still, when you have 30 people free to go take a tertiary objective on someone elses bl… geez.
Yeah, its certainly going to be a struggle this week but I reckon we can do it. We are pretty awesome afterall, not to mention modest.
Let’s not get into these mud-slinging matches guys. None of our servers can claim to be without sin, just report it and move on.
I had the pleasure of seeing VotF in action today. WoW those guys are brutal… we got caught inbetween a JQ and BG zerg and VotF destroyed them both.

I’ve only ever seen one person use that tonic, ever. It was an SoR commander, and they were ALWAYS the first person to render. Mind clarifying what you think it does?

Yeah, what is it with commanders and the ghost potion? 3 times I’ve seen this in the past week. It just makes it easy to find the commander (bless you, AoS commander).

My experience of WM on SoS was a good one. No complaints or exploits there, except maybe having too many committed wvw members.
Where is the exploit here? All I’m seeing is a couple of dedicated thieves taking advantage of SBI’s lax tower-sweeping to take the tower back. I’m not trolling or anything, proccing stealth from a door seems legit to me, unless ANet have specifically said that proccing stealth from enemy walls or doors is a bannable exploit.
I agree though that it seems to be a design oversight that you can get stealth off inanimate objects or one-hit critters.

I only get invites from people I kill in the JP. I just assume it will all be garbage coming out of their mouth so I never accept them

If you need to resort to using a broken rendering trick to win, you might want to examine why you even play the game.

Cool idea but it goes against ANets philosophy of balancing once across all game modes, i.e. to implement this there would presumably have to be a “wvw mode” for toons which opens the door to “pve” and “spvp”

Only thing I hate about this week is the coming of a certain guild that heavy abuses culling erhm… Basically my computer runs well enough but the other 9/10 players who do not suffer so badly they can’t do anything.
What am I talking about? Mesmer stealth. That ability lets you stealth an entire group of 40+ with just 1 mesmer due to how bugged it is at the moment and add stealth culling on top of it, I salute that guild that uses the broken mechanics of WvW to its fullest.
In case people don’t know yet, stealth culling adds another 3-5 seconds after you lost stealth before you can even see them load on you screen. RG you are great at keeping you’re guys together and moving like godzilla but you’re nothing but culling 24/7 made me lost all respect. But hey whatever it takes to win got it.
Can’t say for certain that is is RG doing it intentionally, as I didn’t see any RG guys with the ghost thing on. I did see 2 prx guys running in their zerg as ghosts though. “The Professionals” lol

I think the reason these threads get so heated is because there are a lot of people in these servers that are more passionate about the WvW experience than even they’ll admit.

Meh. You read what you want into it. Zerg is 4 letters and easy to spell, militia is 7 and easy to misspell. When you’re typing fast, the easier, shorter word is preferable. Plus, ‘zerg’ is a word that cuts across languages by now with a common gaming meaning. Militia – not so much.

Get every ally on your BL and steamroll everything.
If your server has the communication between guilds to mobilise everyone onto a single bl then more power to you I say.
By the same token if you completely capped your own bl, then left it undefended while you went somewhere else, then you get everything you deserve.
They really need to re-look into stealth. Watching 10 guys run around trying find a thief that has stealthed is amusing. What do you do? group up for protection in case he pops out again?
Try to interrupt a stealthed thief who is stomping? how? you can’t even target him.
Try to slow him down so he can’t run away? how? he’s stealthed and can simply cleanse effects off him.
Thieves are in a place of their own at the moment. (and maybe D/D elementalists with their healing)
Thieves say AoE, but most AoE is way too slow. By the time you’ve cast it the thief is no longer in the area, you’ve just wasted CDs and the thief is circling around to get you again.
The only class I’ve found so far that can throw enough AoE fast enough to actually get a thief is the necro with marks and wells. I’ve been having a lot of success with this.
D/D ele… not so much. Working on it.
You can have 1 person rez through the DPS of a superior ballista.

Personally, I like the downed state. It adds an extra dimension to combat and large battles. Do you revive a fallen comrade and risk both of you dying or do you fight the opponent yourself to buy time for your fallen comrade to get back up? Despite the way you want to paint this, it isn’t a get-out-of-jail-free card. There is a risk to reviving comrades. If it helps, think of downed players as bait. I do.
I agree that getting a rally off a nearby creature is cheese though. Would be good to remove that.

Majority of the force after about 5pm Pacific was pug group complimented by a good number of PRX and AoS and EMP. We didn’t have more than 5 FOO on SoS BL but you can think what you want.
There were other guilds in the attack(s) but PRX and FOO were the ones I was tab targeting and there were a lot of them, hence why I thought it was a PRX/FOO attack. Maybe it was just a fluke.
Besides which, I’m paying a compliment to your servermates – why are you quibbling about it?

The only time we have 30+ on is at reset, and then we always try to have atleast 1 5 man group seperated from the rest. Also we run without commander icon most of the time to avoid pugs following us. We usually field 20-25, and late night we only field around 15.
Good fights tonight Agg. I guess you took some revenge. It was to bad we got into BG bl that late, and even we couldnt get all of our 18 guys inside BG bl. Think we still had 4 in q when we decided to call it at 6 am here. Even with the backup of a few pugs, we just didnt have the numbers to take you head on. Gonna try and meet you guys again tomorrow. Hopefully we´ll meet you sooner when we still have some numbers on to face you
Be real now Smokee come on lol, i was on JQ border tonight and wish i had taken screenshots of your “18 man” team. Maybe i was drunk and seeing double, but then again i didnt drink.
We had 15 out and put it this way you had twice as many minimum. Not saying it was all HB, but thats the main tags we saw, and if youre all running together then you cant turn around and say it was 18.
Smokee did mention 20-25 HB at the end of the first paragraph of his post. The problem with Smokees numbers is that they don’t include pugs because pugs don’t count apparently, so if its 1 HB and 60 pugs, he defeated your 50-man group with 1 HB.
Now what will be interesting is what will happen if RG meet PRX on battlefield since PRX is the most popular guild in NA, too bad it wont happen anytime soon since they both at same server now.
I was under the impression RG HAVE met PRX on the battlefield, but it was another war, another place, another time…

We (JQ) have a guy hanging out on our borderlands at Spiritholme (north supply camp) constantly using supply to build golems. When politely (or otherwise) asked to stop, he makes some complaint about Temple of Balthazar.
So why don’t you leave a couple of your own guys there and when he completes a golem, jump in it and port it back to spawn?
We did just that. Got four golems from it.
The trollish part was he wouldn’t let us upgrade to double yaks, even after asking several times. It made it harder to upgrade our east and west towers.
Sounds like a strange individual. In the past when thats happened, we’ve just let the enemy take the objective, then get it back and make sure someone normal claims it. At least you got some golems out of it, lol.

Currently, some players causing the AoE are able to do more damage to one person
Compared to what? A thief can put a truckload more damage on a single target than an ele ever will using Meteor Shower. A thief also has no wind up for his big damage spam whereas an ele can be burst down from full to nothing in the time it takes to do the wind up for Meter Shower. To top it all off, a thief can do this while basically being untouchable.
Hell, a warrior with the stun, knock down, haste, hundred blades combo can do comparable dmg in 2-3 seconds (with the only difference being they are vulnerable to dmg while doing it).
