Shatter is still the meta (Guide by Jurica / Metabattle), however if you are used to playing PU then don’t expect to succeed right away.
I’d just like to point out that Sword/Torch shatter is just as popular right now.
According to the forum every new change will be the deah of thief. :P And yet somehow this is the only profession that never left meta if my memory serves me well.
Ehhh… I wouldn’t say this is true currently. Thieves are seen largely as sPvP liabilities, P/D dire conditions is the real contender in WvW roaming atm because it’s just blatantly overpowered (D/P and D/D are long gone from competitive small scale outside of killing low-skill players for the most part) because we’re facing a slow transgression into a condition-based roaming meta, and thieves were really never part of the speed-clear PvE scene before RT, and even then, it’s only for some encounters as generally speaking other classes deal more DPS through boon distribution capabilities.
The only role the class as a whole has done will with for an extended period of time is WvW small-scale/roaming, but that’s now changing quite a bit.
They’ve never really been part of an optimization strategy so much as they’ve been usable throughout formats because generally speaking the class is fairly balanced. Optimal or a metagame dependency, though? Not forever, no.
I was talking about PvP. Shortbow’s mobility alone will keep thieves in the meta for a long long time because of their backcap potential, and the burst + mobility makes them great for +1’ing fights.
Metabattle hasn`t all the builds for any game mode. Just has the more commonly accepted as good builds based on the metagame right now.
The number of pretty decent and also fun builds missing the site is big. But is a nice place to start. But don`t use metabattle as if that limited number of builds was all there is, cause it`s not.
There are many workable builds in the game that you could use, there’s just no point in that because they don’t stand out enough. Some key factors when it comes to judging a build on the site: it should be able to fill a necessary role and the build must offer something that other builds don’t cover yet.
But the roaming section is a bit lacking, if you think something should be there but isn’t then I’m open for new ideas.

Rule #9000: Run a non meta build when you don’t even know how to pvp to begin with. Auto win
Well… For example when you play engi, it’s better to get used to pvp using a p/s rabid build instead of the meta cele one. Or playing a PU mesmer istead of a shatter mesmer. You see the idea.
Cele engi is easier than Rabid IMO. And encouraging someone to run PU is the same as encouraging someone to stay afk. It’s just as useful for your team and the guy won’t get any closer to learning how to play mesmer.
On the topic:
Rule #14 – always push far first. If you fail, keep trying until the match ends. Top players often rush far solo while streaming, it’s obvious that you should do the same, 24/7.
You forgot rule 6 – destroying an unmanned enemy trebuchet is more important than capping points and should be done by someone built for condition damage asap. Duh.

Nothing changed, that is how Elementalist is, the damage is rather low compared to other classes, but you have a more skills to spam, to compensate with quantity over quality.
Afaik ele has the 2nd highest DPS in PvE.
In PvE, he is one of the better classes, in PvP, he is still mediocre.
The damage potential is there, but it still doesn’t take away from what i said, overall damage elementalist does, is with quantity over quality, we have to spam all our abilities in 4 different attuenements to be effective, while dealing suboptimal damage with singulary spells.
Not sure if trolling or got 0 experience. A Good S/F ele burst is far from mediocre and the build is hard to play.
And if we don’t go for pure burst – D/D ele is the strongest spec in PvP. Even top teams stack those on their roster. You can even see teams being effective on higher ratings with 3 eles.
@Numrud,
Below is a quote from another thread that I made. This is a really fun build based upon the traditional “Commander” build yet it will produce massive amounts of DPS.
@ OP,
I use a similar Medi build for my guardian and have had a great deal of success with it. Some may question the traveler’s runes but for roaming, it’s what I tend to use as well.
If you would consider something different than the Medi that is so popular right now, I highly recommend you take a look at the video below. This build plays like a Medi but has a crap-ton of regen and sustain while dealing out crazy damage. Even with a full exotic set, you can do some nasty damage while roaming. I’ve been testing this the last few days and while it does lack in mobility (I use the staff to move around), it’s really fun to troll folks with.
This is a WvW frontliner build designed for zerging and shall never be used for PvP.

They did not say Taunt will make your enemy spam his autoattack. All they say is Taunt will lock the entire skilbar except for autoattack. Or at least that’s how I see it.
Sounds nice, but to make it effective you need an AoE Taunt application with a range of ~1k and a duration of 3-5 seconds. Which is just OP. If the range is smaller, why can’t you just stomp without taunt, if the enemies are in range?
Not to mention this takes up 2 utility slots, gl surviving against anything :P
And 3rd, if you use taunt why would you stomp them away? They are balled up, cleave them down!
I don’t think it’s similar to mesmer at all. For example the Mallyx-theme was heavily inspired by the Contagion builds of GW1 (gaining conditions on purpose and sharing them with nearby enemies).
This issue can’t get buried. Not splitting ques is the worst thing they came up with since Skyhammer.
If we have to cry 1 year before they make the right call again then I’m afraid there won’t be anyone left in PvP by the end of the year.
Most WvW roaming videos are about killing PvE players who are keyboard turning and takes them 10 seconds to target a thief on a plain field with no other enemies nearby and the only skill they can use is autoattack. Even if the youtuber is good, they are facing PvE players doing daily gathering achies in nearly every video. This obviously makes good players seem indestructible and bad ones decent.

Apparently Zerk stance also works instead of “Fear Me”
With Cleansing ire + warhorn cleanses + shout cleanses you do not need it. A 3rd shout at least brings additional AoE healing/condi cleansing. Or take Balanced Stance for the stability.
All i have is a Warrior at 80.
If you aren’t aware you can use a character that isn’t lvl 80 in PvP, they are all leveled up to 80 much like WvW, although unlike WvW your gear is also statistically max. So even a new character at lvl 2 is just as strong in PvP as an 80.
Sy why i cant equip helmet and shoulders at my lvl 2 charr when im in pvp?SAys i need lvl 10
These are level restricted but do not countribute to pvp armor rating. You need to have something equipped in the chest, leg and boot slots the rest does not matter. Can be lvl 1 white items too, just have something in the slot.
They still haven’ t balanced ranger after 2 years and half.
So my answer is no.
Ranger’s balanced, imo condi ranger’s one of the best sidepoint contesters atm. But celestial specs are just simpy too good and leave no room for other specs and classes for this role. Instead of overbuffing rangers to be stronger than celes and creating insane powercreep, they should nerf what’s OP instead of making a balanced spec simply even stronger than the currently OP ones.
Mediocre troll 4/10.
It’s unblockable, so you can send the enemy guard’s heal (Shelter) on full CD without any healing recieved by your enemy. You can also mess up an engineer’s gear shield.
And ofc rupting stomps is always good.
I just ran tpvp last night and of course the number of shoutbows are stupid. I am 100% unimpressed with the build and i have not met 1 shoutbow so far that i havent killed with ease with my build.
Fear while unblockable does not mean the same thing as 100% hit always. Fear both necro, warrior, theif stolen or ranger pet ability can still be dodged/evaded, blinded, stabilitied and simply out ranged (though out ranging this is rare and hard to accomplish in most circumstances).
If anything i give this shoutbow build meta trend a 2/5.
Not a fan of the build either. It would probably fail in a power meta as mesmer/thief burst combo takes it out under seconds, but this hardcounters every condi spec with no effort and provides valuable party healing/cleanses.

Would be nice but still won’t solve the issue.
I have yet to hear a good argument on why build templates would not solve the majority of issues with the stronghold map being in the same queue as the other maps. Would you care to explain it to me.
Many people don’t want to que for hours just to be able to play a single match of Stronghold. Map selection is RNG and there are 4 conquest maps in rated rotation with only 1 Stronghold, go figure.
It’s also possible that a team does well in conquest but sucks at stronghold or vice versa, which leads to even worse matchmaking (people get paired before the gamemode is decided, which rating will count for matchmaking, conquest or GvG?)
If you hate your team and want to make sure the enemy wins, go zerker staff.
If you don’t like getting killed by everything that moves and actually want to climb the ladder, go cele.
These topics shouldn’t have been merged.. but if you do it, merge it by the topic of the discussion and don’t try to hide the shared que concerns behind this title.
Who’s making these decisions? (skyhammer, removal of soloque, existence of hotjoin, shared que with an entirely different ladder – how is that even supposed to work? matchmaking picks the teams based on conquest rating and then Stronghold gets voted?) Is it 1 guy we can blame or more?
Don’t even attempt to do it as a thief.
Will stronghold get its own que or is it just gonna be 1 of the maps?
A lot of the questions on here have been answered in the past already. So let me answer a couple for you so they don’t waste time during the cast; double stating what they have already told us.
1: Yes, you can solo Q into the game mode.
2: Yes it will have its own Q’s
3: Yes it will have its own leader board
4: When time runs out, if both lords are up, the team with the most points wins. This is how it already works in the event of a tie and how it will continue to work.
5: No, this is not GvG so stop saying that. It is sPvP.Source? Particularly for #2.
This gamemode will have its own guild ladder (because this is GvG), so it’s pretty obvious that it’ll come with its own que.
I’d like to see a source for #1 because I’m sure that won’t happen. Soloque on a guild ladder? Maybe he’s talking about hotjoin.
I think if you want a tanky mesmer spec you should experiment with Mantras on a Sword/Focus Staff setup.

they are saying that because along with it will come a guild leaderboard
I’m still amazed that WvW people “created” their own version of “GvG” completely ignoring the official gamemode established in GW1, and when that gamemode gets a successor in GW2 they say “it’s not real GvG” because it’s not the zergfest they created. I’m just speechless.
Step 1: buff ferocity
No, please don’t buff cele.
Seriously, there not any other decent build right now ? Normally I play Thief and Engi , but I decide to give a shot to the warrior because is one of my favorites and I want to play a little more tanky(Shoutbow), so far is comfortable and reliable but a little repetitive. However, there is literally almost no other build out there, 95% of the time is Shoutbow and the other 5% Hambow. Besides this two build , there any other “viable” right now ?
Axe’s still great just not as good as before the adrenaline nerf and you can still be successful with the Mace condi build, but stick to smaller fights with that. GS/Longbow is also workable but it’s significantly harder than other builds.
And GS/Rifle is still a joke.
requiem already posted the WvW one but here is the PvP version
I hope you know that PvE stats do not matetr in PvP so “stacking” berserker gear is pointless and a waste of gold and time. Every stat is in the PvP amulet. I’m pretty sure the guides you saw listed the amulet you just did not know that holds all the stats.
If you need help with how PvP gear works watch this video
Is it good in PvP atm?
It’s the best. It can do everything in 1 single build. Even top teams are stacking eles, sometimes going as far as 3 cele D/D in a team.
So the article doesn’t specify, but looks like it is gonna be another 5v5. RIP stronghold. I doubt anything less than a 8v8 will have the attention of the wvw and pve community.
And who cares about them? Should Dungeons be developed based on what PvP players want? Should they remove towers from WvW and replace them with PvE events because maybe some PvE players would want that?
In case some WvW players hadn’t noticed, this is going to be an addition to PvP, not your spammy zergfests, for that you get your new borderland which tbh looks amazing.

AoE only works vs horribly bad turret engis. If the engi has a brain then he won’t place any turret on the point other than Thumper in which case AoE won’t help that much. Zerker staff ele is a bad idea, you can’t crit hit turrets and anything will demolish that build, even turret engis who know how to place the turrets.
As atrocious as it may sound, I’d go with a D/F condi ele: you can chain 10+ seconds of anti-projectile skills / immunity while overloading the engi with conditions he can’t deal with.

@Uuni.3561
If they didn’t care they wouldn’t be making a new mode or attempting to do all this world tournament stuff.
Unfortunately, guild wars 2 PvP is handicapped by the fact that it isn’t a f2p, so it creates a loop where they aren’t enough ppl to justify resources and at the same time because of the lack of resource people dont play it.
I don’t think “justifying resources” is a problem now considering how they are throwing away 10,000s of $ evrery couple of months now at a WTS. Besides, GW1 had the same business model and PvP population wasn’t a problem. The lack of content is. Hopefully GvG will solve many of the current issues.
I think if they want to attract the max amount of players to Stronghold, they really need two different versions.
5v5 is too small for casual PvP’ers. But anything over 5v5 is too many for competitive PvP’ers.
Custom arenas are ok but it just splits the community too much. Two versions would be better.
A competitive bracket with 5v5. A non-competitive or casual bracket with 8-12v8-12.
The article highlighted that there will be some casual/PvE-friendly role(s) in this gamemode, there is no further reason to minimalize the need for individual skill by increasing the team sizes imo.
They tell a lot of things about the roles. NPCs alone won’t win you matches, you have to support them, and if you do that enemy players will obiously try to take you out as you get closer to their keep. Then there are the hero channels, those will give place for teamfights like lower buff on temple. Don’t forget the treb – you want to deal with it asap when it starts to rain fire, which creates an 1v1 scenario (or maybe more).
Some GW1 GvG tactics might make a comeback too like splitpushing. There’s plenty of place for PvP in this gamemode, but instead of capture points there are other reasons to engage in a fight.
Any mode larger than 5v5 would drive away PvP players from playing it I’d say. 5v5 is a good call (for multiple reasons) and it shouldn’t be debated. The only people who want a cap increase are WvW players, but I think it’s pretty obvious that PvP patches should target the PvP audience. They get a new borderland, we get a new map/gamemode, mind your own business guys.
Settler amulet is workable in condi builds with D/F, I personally love that build. But you just made D/D useless by trying to “improve” it, you can’t expect to play condi with the same skill and trait setup.
And why on earth would you want to make D/D more tanky? :P
Just a tip, never use an off-hand axe. Ever. And there are so many better sigils than force for pvp.
Another LB build…. Sad day! Why would you roll a Warrior to shoot a bow 70% of the time?
“another” – this is a pretty old build, also i don’t think you get the concept of PvP builds if you don’t know why longbow is something you can’t play without. :P
You don’t understand being facetious, I said another meaning, that what EVERY Warrior uses… Its pathetic that the only way a Warrior can be viable is to shoot from range being a MELEE class!
You need the bow to proc cleansing ire in a relyable way and to stack might, mostly. Also, the size and ~perma burning of that fire field is OP and Pin Down sets the stage perfectly for any burst. It’s still mainly a melee build. And lol there is no such thing as melee class in GW2.

First 2 results.
Digging it out, because after quite some time I’ve recently experienced same server lag which makes tPvP unplayable right now.
Sunday problems possibly.
It’s not “sunday problems”, it’s “every single late-afternoon/night problems”.
Lol. They did not nerf ele’s sustain at all, stop with the doomsday mentality, the cele build is still the best.
I seriously don’t get why counter comping is allowed. With the roster they should submit the builds they are going to play – maybe switch an utility or two but drastic changes like amulet wapping / rerolling should not be allowed.
I don’t think it’s so much that people hate bunker guardian as it is just an outdated spec. Why bring a bunker guardian with no damage or mobility when you can just have a celestial ele or engi that can bunker just as well but also actually kill people and rotate?
Outdated is not the right word, it’s just no longer meta. Bunker guard is still a great asset to the team with AoE stability/protection sharing, condi cleansing, res bubble, healing and might stacking with staff. They also stomp better than any of the cele specs.
I left GW2 about a year ago, wondering whats changed with the thief and how it does in PvP. What are some good builds that you can link? How should I play the theif now?
For build use this
Thief still fills an executioner role in teamfights and is awesome at decapping.
