-1, horrible way to spend resources. Developing a gamemode for what, 100 people per region? You can’t be serious. Besides the combat system was simply not designed for that.

The scene isn’t as busy now, but at its height I’d peg it at a few thousand per region. That’s with an unofficial game mode.

If there were some mechanic to allow guilds to fight outside of their tier (that isn’t color-based like EotM), the competition would be better. I think it would also open it up to more casual guilds that don’t GvG but see it as another activity to do on a large scale, a la Guild Missions.

You need too many players for a team. Qs would be dead for 20-22 hours a day, with no matchmaking. Because of the size of the rosters, 99% of the gw2 community would never get to experience it. It’s a bad investment for Anet.

Yeaaaah. Instead of balancing the build out it killed it.

“Killing it” means it’s balanced now. Considering the risk/reward factor this build is in the right place now in terms of viability (elohell), maybe even stronger than it should be but only with the flying turret exploit.

It’s not only about the stats. Healing Signet can’t be interrupted, keeps healing you even when you are CC’d and while a well timed 1-2 seconds longs Poison can be enough to reduce the effectiveness of other heals by 33% (this means thousands of HP) its impact on HS is much less significant.

i dont’ see much of a issue when it comes to interrupting a warroirs heal skill .
Healing signet is 1-1/4 sec cast more than enough time to stop it , it can be done same goes for surge though thats 1sec cast time.

If you are ever using Healing Signet for the active then there are problems.

Glass cannons are unreasonably strong in this gamemode. If a glass cannon encounters a player who is not a glass cannon, it is very easy for that player to simply ignore the other player and rush down their npcs while the other guy can do very little to really stop them. The whole idea of throwing npcs next to players in a pvp environment just wasn’t thought through looks to me. Tanky builds are all but useless since you can’t do much to protect your npcs. Don’t bring pve’s zerker meta into pvp please.

For once, there is a game mode that doesn’t promote shoutbows, cele engis, dd eles and such and you’re complaining about it?

Actually it does promote cele builds as those are capable of healing, cleansing and sharing boons with NPCs while also maintaining decent pressure. Escorting doorbreakers with cele staff ele or shoutbow was easy except for invading thieves. But with a bunker guard even thieves couldn’t take down a single one of our doorbreakers.

Metabattle canned the build? Why? I thought it was pretty effective when I played it.

It had a 2.78 overall rating after 9 votes, builds below 3.75 don’t qualify for the fronpage categories. You found it to be “pretty effective”, but compared to what? It has less boon sharing (and thus less party utility) than any other thief build under the Conquest category, longer CD on steal doesn’t help this. Steal doesn’t daze targets with this build, so there goes your instant interrupt as well. These are just some of the issues.

I think arguements can be made for every rating range from 1 to 4 for this build, but I feel it’s around 3 so the votes aren’t off. Here’s the definition of a “3 star build”:

3 – Mediocre: A build that does its role reasonably well but is outclassed by other builds. Has good ideas but in practice doesn’t bring many advantages to warrant it’s use.

TL;DR 3 is the “good, but not good enough” rating.

Edit: How do I rate it in metabuild? I have no idea…

You can click any category tab on the fronpage, dungeons, conquest etc and at the bottom of the list you’ll find builds labeled as “Test” – you can vote for those. After a build passed testing, it’ll either move to great, good or trash based on its rating and the voting is closed. If a balance patch or anything significantly affects the build’s effectiveness, then builds might be moved back to testing, or moved down / up (for instance from great to good).

Also keep in mind that builds are rated based on their effectiveness in a competitive environment, not hotjoin or low-rating soloque/pug stomping. (I’m not saying anyone in this thread plays on that level, but we all know the current matchmaking and farmboards I guess, so it’s not uncommon that good players get to play against newbies which might give false feedback regarding a build’s effectiveness)

Anyone can tailor a build to their liking for solo queue, the real way to get on the board is to actually do well in a tournament with it, get a team and show it off if its really that good.

That is correct. If someone proves that this build can be a valuable asset to a team and there is any kind of adventage for taking this build over a D/P or (power) S/D thief at a weekly/monthly cup then that surely helps the build’s cause.

Other sites posted all the WvW info weeks before Anet did I believe (around the end of february). So march 17 is a delayed repost with no new info.

Yes the glyph heal is so good for PvP that nobody uses it since ~2013.

I gave actual reasons why the heal is good and your retort amounts to “it isn’t popular.” If you can’t come up with an actual reason for thinking the heal is bad, you should probably change your opinion.

It has a rather long cast time which means it can be interrupted, unlike the signet. The boons aren’t good enough (yes the regen is nice but eles already have ~perma regen from the cantrip trait, soothing wave and attuning to water). What matters is that this skill is no longer being used and that doesn’t happen without a reason.

Few small changes you would make to the meta

in PvP

Posted by: witcher.3197

witcher.3197

I am not sure this qualifies as a SMALL change but generally: EVERY CLASS SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST ONE FULLY VIABLE META BUILD. The most objective measure I know of is the metabattle website, according to which mesmers, rangers and necros currently do not have a (fully viable) meta build. These classes are indeed the least represented ones in tournaments.

I believe that you have misinterpreted the metabattle website and how it ranks “Fully viable meta builds.” You notice at the top of the list of builds is the highest category labeled “META” where you see 5 builds. What needs to be noted is that those 5 builds are the exact same 5 builds ORNG used to win WTS in Boston, so I am a bit suspicious, that that level is simply reserved for the builds that won the last major tournament.

To confirm my suspicion, you click on each build to see what their rating is. They don’t the rating is simply given as "This build also received an overall rating of 4.75 or higher out of 5.00 and thus qualified for the highest category of working builds: Great. " This label is used for both builds in the “META” category, and the “GREAT” category solidifying my conclusion is that the only difference between “META” and “GREAT” is that the all the “META” builds won in Boston.

If this is true, then it is simply not possible for every class to have a working “META” build as there are only 5 team slots and 8 classes to choose from. That means the goal to shoot for would be every class has at least one “GREAT” which still means top tier. Right now, Mesmers have 2 (albeit very similar), ranger has 3 fairly different ones, and necro technically only has the terrormancer but I think that is just a case of lack of updating as powernecro has become more popular as of late at all levels.

Link for reference: http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki

If you hover over the Ranked Arena category you see a textbox which explains what the categories mean btw. Meta means most common builds at the highest level of PvP – this is not restricted to 5 man teams nor a single winning team. There are 5 builds labeled as meta atm because if you watch weekly go4cups, monthly cups, or any major tournaments, around 80% of the players run one of those 5 builds. oRNG just happens to run only the most common specs.

It is possible to have more than 5 builds under meta if we start seeing more diversity in team comps.

You are right about the ratings btw – meta doesn’t mean it has a higher rating than any of the builds in Great, it just means those are a lot more common at hihg tier PvP.

But let’s stay on topic, back to balance suggestions everyone :P

witcher doesn’t know what he’s talking about regarding the glyph; it’s a good heal. It’s solid for any build that invests heavily in water/arcana. The regen from water attunement gives it a high healing per second, it isn’t hard countered by interrupts as much as ether and the choice of boons gives it versatility.

The only arcana traits worth using are renewing stamina, elemental attunement, evasive arcana and blasting staff. Your other traits are acceptable.

I agree with everything that Phantaram said. Some other things:

Engi:

  • Reduce gear shield duration to 2 seconds.
  • 50% hp nerf to turrets.

Mesmer:

  • Make Ether Feast remove 1 condition for each active illusions (max 3)

Thief:

  • Sleight of Hand should no longer reduce the CD on steal.

I know it breaks the concept of celestial, but the defensive stats should be nerfed by 20-30%.

Considering how only interrupts can break channels now, I’d say there is a chance for CI closing the gap on Shatter mesmer for Stronghold, but it still won’t be better.

Since CI doesn’t provide you with additional interrupts I don’t really see how you come to that conclusion.

It actually does. CI somewhat justifies taking CC over the otherwise more optimal choices – if you play standard shatter then torch is superior to focus because of the Stealth, and Portal/Decoy are more valuable than a dazing mantra. If you play CI there’s at least a point at investing into more CC at the expense of valuable defensive skills and party utility.

Mesmers imo shouldn’t think about supply carrying builds as thieves will be superior because of their mobility, eles/warriors for both their mobility and access to stability while they are also able to take some hits all while running viable builds unlike the mesmer – a mesmer player would have to sacrifice too much to be even remotely close to other professions.

The 2 top tier heals for ele are Signet of restoration and Ether Renewal, forget about the glyph. Utilities are almost spot on, but I’d probably change the mist form to Armor of Earth. Elite should be either the Glyph or the FGS for extra mobility – it is OP for disengaging as well.

This one is the most popular D/D setup, it’s hybrid – decent condi / power dmg and is fairly tanky.

For condi I’d recommend D/F with signets but it’s not as viable as the D/D.

Are phantasm builds no longer meta?

in Mesmer

Posted by: witcher.3197

witcher.3197

Phantasm is inherently disadvantaged in conquest due to AOEs destroying your phantasms too often and the fact that it’s largely single-target in its focus with little team utility.

If I’m playing phantasm, I prefer the signet condition variety due to the fact that your clones dying ties into your overall dmg output. Click the link in my signature for a thorough discussion of the varieties it available. It’s a super fun build that I’ve helped to popularize, and I get a lot of positive feedback from it!! Still, even that build has some glaring flaws that can make it really hard to be viable in several situations.

As with universally all Mesmer builds, you will find it harder to be successful the higher you climb in tier based on skill level.

Countless’ build is a bit of a different case. Phantasm builds rely on, well, phantasms to do 90% of the work, and if you kill those then the mesmer becomes useless, thus it’s bad in every situation bigger than 1v1 and often even in 1v1s too (a thief with shortbow can entirely shut down phantasm builds just by autoattacking, or a warrior can use the longbow field to burn away all of them, etc).

The clone death build on the other hand is the opposite, it benefits from your enemies killing your clones/phantasms, while still having a decent phantasm/personal dmg with great sustain. It’s one of those situations where someone hit gold in a junkyard.

FitG-PoC Terrormancer utilities

in Necromancer

Posted by: witcher.3197

witcher.3197

You’re right, it’s not that simple. Flesh Wurm can be used to build up some life force at start (which leaves you with -1 stunbreaker). As it’s a teleport, it can be sesd as a panic button in many situations, teleporting to safety (likely to places that block LoS). Spectral walk is an extremely powerful skill for juking especially on places like Clocktower on Kyhlo or Keep on Forest, and it’s your only access to swiftness which can be useful.

Then there is the 3rd skill which is the mandatory Corrupt Boon.

I wouldn’t recommend swapping out any of these utilities, but if you do:

  • Epidemic used to be mete for almost a year after the game was released, but with DD / Staff eles and shout warriors around, AoE condi cleansing is just too high to be worth it, not to mention necro condi stacking was nerfed multiple times.
  • I’d go with Signet of Spite. Against mesmers/engis it’s insta-win.

Are phantasm builds no longer meta?

in Mesmer

Posted by: witcher.3197

witcher.3197

It was never meta in PvP, it’s only viable in very low tiers but what isn’t viable there?

(Metabattle is testing a full DPS phant build atm)

And it’s just as bad as any other phantasm build if not worse. The fact that it’s sitting at 4.0 not 1.0 out of 5 shows that the current rating system can be easily exploited, that’s why we’re not going to let it pass testing before the new system is in place.

A pvp player centered reward track.

in PvP

Posted by: witcher.3197

witcher.3197

I’ve always told my friends that if ArenaNet came out with a track that gave me overall less money than I’d get from other tracks, but it was JUST straight gold with no need to open anything more than some gold coin bags, I’d choose that on an infinite loop. How does this sound?:

  1. Bag of Coins (15s)
  2. Tome of Knowledge
  3. Bag of Coins (15s)
  4. Transmutation Charge
  5. Big Bag of Coins (30s)
  6. Bag of Coins (15s)
  7. Tome of Knowledge
  8. Bag of Coins (15s)
  9. Transmutation Charge
  10. Superior Bag of Coins (50s)
  11. (Repeat 3 more times to finish and get)
  12. Choice of:
    1. 10 Transmutation Stones
    2. 5 Tomes of Knowledge
    3. 2 Gold
    4. 20 Slot Slayer’s Bag (Account Bound)
    5. PvP Trait Unlock

Keep in mind, these are rewards for winning or losing in PvP. I think it’s fair to say that black lion stuff is out of the question. Those numbers are completely rough estimates. They’d have to be roughly equal to what you get out of normal chests from salvaging and getting random rares/exotics, which I simply don’t have the numbers for. The whole idea is that I don’t care about crafting materials or these worthless skins, so just gimmie money cuz i like it.

Just some stats, this track would give you exactly:

  1. 5.6 Gold (7.6 Gold Max)
  2. 8 Transmutation Stones (18 Transmutation Stones Max)
  3. 8 Tomes of Knowledge (13 Tomes of Knowledge Max)

Too much direct silver/gold generation which leads do more inflation. We need unique items we could sell on the TP to PvE guys who already make tons of gold, we definitely don’t need to make gold lose value even more.

GW1 got it right – PvP players gained 0 gold from playing PvP, yet good players were drowning in gold because they had all the zaishen key, celestial sigils and later victory boxes to sell. We need something PvP-only.

Anets loves their boxes, we need a reward track with boxes that have a chane to drop rare things (minipets, skins etc) – these must be tradeable, and we need some fixed rewards at the end of the track – also tradeable and this must be different than the RNG box loot.

There is a difference between hard and simply bad. Hard means it’s hard to make it work but it pays offs. There is nothing hard about the playstlye of a zerker staff ele: no burst combos, no big plays, no jukes. It’s simply not viable, the moment the enemy team notices your existence you are already respawning, there’s not much you can do about it. It’s simply a bad build.

guys,

this debate is getting out of hand, the only way I can see this debate can end is having an actual test involving recognized players in sPvP willing to participate in few 5 vs 5 games, and with one team has the same exact class/combo (that dont change through out the test), and going against another team with mesmer in the roster. The only variant should be the build of the mesmer (which is to be swapped out with power shatter build or mtd build).

Obviously this video should be recorded for educated debate and critique that’s been raging the past few weeks regarding mtd condi shatter build.

Top players test all the new things whenever something about their profession changes – they wouldn’t be on top if they weren’t open to new things. I’m sure Helseth, Supcutie, Countless and many others have tried MtD before.

The reason why you don’t ever see them play this is not because they are unaware of its existence, but rather because it’s inferior to what they are currently running.

It’s CI/Lockdown all over again. The mesmer forum is so convinced that it’s better than shatter, yet it’s not being used at tournaments and Helseth stated/proved a million times that it’s not better.

There is a reason why it’s tagged for WvW and not PvP. In WvW, higher stats will allow you to overwhelm people with your damage and anti-condi food makes up for the lack of longbow (and in general the lower skill level of your opponents, as roaming is sort of like hotjoin).

WvW builds in general suck at sPvP very very hard.

The gear stats on the other hand are ideal for doing dungeons too, so if you ever want to play some PvE then that gear is mandatory to have anyways.

Spirit watch is not even in rated rotation, so it’s as irrelevant as it can get.

The RTL nerf had nothing to do with Spirit Watch, it was just too OP for conquest in general.

Viability of condi mesmer in sPvP

and I can even last an additional 10 sec or so on point, but I’m wondering if this is mostly a result of the mid-level competition I’m facing.

For mesmer: power > condi. I think the main problem is you were actually trying to stay on the point, something a power mesmer shouldn’t even think about.

So I was thinking about this, say for example, I just wanted to roam, +1 fights, and gank the crap out of people in sPvP, what would I run? Assuming I don’t care about capping the points.

5/6/0/0/3 D/D? I don’t like standing on the point for fear of AoE bombs that can be dropped from at least 900 range away.

No. D/D is horrible for tPvP and any PvP thief build without 6 points in the last trait line sucks. What you need is D/P

I believe the OP’s point was that he was tired of the same D/P builds…

Ahh sorry completely zoned out. Well, what he described as a playstyle is exactly what D/P offers, he could try S/D too but I think he wants to keep the stealth play however D/D is just bad.

Shoutheal GS warrior sounds like elohell category to me. Besides, a shoutheal warrior only has 1 stunbreaker and 0 stability, it can be CC’d to death.

Oh, like the meta ele has more than 1 stun break on a 75s CD? If you can CC the Warrior to death, I bet that you can CC the ele to death even faster, because the ele has active healing, not passive.

People complain about how OP ele is, they are getting stuck in the past. After the might nerf, ele is not that strong anymore. Losing 100 damage per second may not seem to be that significant, but it’s all that was needed to overcome the passive healing. It’s still a decent class, but claiming it’s the best is naive.

D/D Ele has access to nearly perma protection, shout warrior only gets protection if he converts vulnerability. Ele also has a teleport on 40 sec CD, while not a stunbreaker, you can teleport to the highground and escape the burst. Then there’s Shocking aura, which stops enemy burts unless your opponent has stability (also applies protection). Don’t forget water attunement, which is another source of instant heal/condi cleansing and an aura that chills foes and gives protection to you. And if all fails, just disengage with FGS, which makes it almost impossible to chase you down.

But yeah, D/D ele is bad, despite thet fact that every top team has at least 1 ele. Or 2. Well sometimes 3.

As having human legendary figures (such as Barradin, Adelbern, or Gwen): that won’t work.

Do you think they will lend their powers to charrs ? That wouldn’t make sense lore-wise…

Shiro is human as well and appears to be one of the legends. If you mean Ascalonian humans specifically then I agree with you that those humans are unlikely.

Though I don’t think their willingness to lend their power is a factor here. Mallyx and Shiro seem like guys who would not be very interested in helping mortals fighting dragons and what not. Thus I think it has more to do with the Revenant wanting to channel legends and being able to channel legends than with those legends approving of being channeled.

Legends talk to players during combat. I’ve heard the Mallxy lines are about unleashing your power and give in to Mallyx, becoming his minion which he could use to break free.

So they have their own reasons to land their power to us :P

Pure BS. It IS against the ToC, a dev confirmed it a month or 2 ago. It’s match manipulation, no matter how you describe it.

Just because “it’s the server’s rule so it’s fine” no, it’s not. Just because in your household you make a rule that says you can kill whoever you like – you’re still going to jail because of your country’s law, because your house is in the country. Same case, your custom arena is a part of GW2 and match manipulation is forbidden in this game.

On the other hand anet does not bother to ban anyone unless it seriously affects the economy.

This particular game mode is influencing players to play a certain way (as do most game modes) but they’re not manipulating you (the user) or the game (hacking or changing source code) in any way.

Hacking is hacking. Match manipulation is match manipulation. 2 different things.

“In organized sports, match fixing occurs as a match is played to a completely or partially pre-determined result, violating the rules of the game and often the law.”

I forgot his name, but the King of Orr before it sunk into the sea was more impressive than Adelbern. Just saying.

We barely know anything about the Kings of Orr. The guy who sank Orr was a Vizier called Khilbron not a king, I think you are talking about him.

According to the Personal Story, Reza was the most powerful (magically) ruler of Orr by the time of the Cataclysm. We know he is a descendant of King Doric (like King Addledbrains, Prince Rurik, and Duke Barradin).

Also, Ralanost was talking about the last king of Orr, he/she didn’t say that Reza sunk Orr. Without the powers of Abaddon and the Scroll of magic used to summon the Cataclysm, it’s most likely that Reza is more powerful than Khilbron. Not only that, all player characters have a connection to him through the personal story.

We know a lot more about Khilbron, he played a major role in GW1’s story. Reza on the other hand barely shows up once or twice in GW2 which makes him a lot less likely candidate compared to the vizier.

But we already know the legends anyways: Mallyx, Jalis, Shiro, Ventari and Glint.
