Make minigames more competitive!

witcher.3197

Minigames are a pretty underrated yet awesome part of GW2, I feel like they should recieve more spotlight and I think there is a pretty easy way to incentivize them.

My suggestion is to add record boards for some of the activities, namely: Keg brawl, Sanctum Sprint (and maybe Crab Toss).

To avoid syncing there should be 2-3 assigned hours each day when people can join “ranked” in order to avoid making record runs at night time whithout real competitors.

Keg Brawl

There should be an option to make premades for keg brawl, and only full teams could sign up for the daily keg brawl tournament and it would work like Teamque in PvP, with matchmaking, rating and an own leaderboard.

Sanctum Sprint

No premades allowed, and it does not need a matchmaking – all that matters is your time in which you complete the run. Only runs where you play from start to finish would count, because it is known that players who start later get the skipping buff a lot more often.

Then there has to be a record keeper, an NPC who shows you the current month’s best runs, so you can know what and who you need to beat. It could also have a second tab for all-time best records.

The rewards

Each month, the top 50 players get a unique tradeable minipet (so people can turn it into profit if they’d like to) and a title, both with the theme of the given minigame.

Personally, I totally love the minigames, but there’s barely any reward for my time.

I’d like to see a 5v5 tri-lane map and a 3v3 dual-lane map with minions, towers, roaming jungle with small objectives, like a MOBA. Kill for tokens to purchase siege, jungle for resources to build siege, something like that. Could be Skritt minions vs Hylek minions or something along those lines.

If you want to play MOBAs why did you buy an MMO?

Actually, nobody. It was active for a day after it was released then people realized it’s awful.

But a GW1 style GvG is likely coming soon, so check back in 2-6 months.

Because you can learn the combat system and even strategies in an FPS 10v10, but here it’s just a big chaotic cancer. 5v5 is the limit and it’s a good decision.

-snip-

I agree it does feel like they are setting up way to many questions and are answering so few and it is really annoying

i think perhaps if u think of this game like a book
I think what they are doing right now is still the “begining” of their story they are setting up exposition (the rules of the universe)
asking questions that will be answered later
whereas all the players see it as the end of the “book” cause alot of them have finished the campeign

The thing is… We have no idea how long this “book” is
and for gw1 players at least we have been waiting a loooooooooong time for some of these answers

i understand that this is sort of the beginning of there story however (for gw1 players)
this is the end of the second “book” for us and we still have ALOT of unanswered questions about the first

Agreed, they are trying to set up an entirely different universe with GW2, witht tons of retcons because they are afraid that GW2 players wouldn’t understand a GW1-based story.

ArenaNet sometimes compares the game to Game of Thrones so i will do the same:

The TV show does not begin with the story of Robert’s rebellion (Gw1), but you need to know what happened there in order to understand the current events – Martell / Lannister hostility, fall of the Targaryan dynasty and so on. But they managed to recap that story in forms of dialogues.

But in GW2 they chose to throw their story away and rebuild from scratch. We have so many GW1 stories that they could tell, but instead they are creating even more stories they won’t finish. Fun part is that they are still doing a good job explaining the story of GW1 all around Tyria, I just don’t see why they couldn’t pull a GoT – in fact, they should, and in season 2 we might see some GW1 related stuff.

Most of the “new” story of Gw2 is highly disliked by most of the community, it would be wise to build on some Gw1 lore. It’s supposed to be a sequel anyways.

Sorry, but i don’t think OP is asking to be a hotjoin hero, or a wvw “pro”.

He is also not asking for completely wrong info about warriors.

Everything I said works perfectly fine in ranked as well as in hot join.

Non of i said is wrong, i have at least 20 x more tpvp warrior experience than you.
and i’ve played GS war forever and tried anyway to make it more viable then simple soloq fun build.

We are simply not on the same level, what you said only applies to your level of play. While OP is definitely not asking for this. or is he.

You might actually want to read the whole topic again. OP is just starting sPvP and wants to learn something, not just copy-paste faceroll meta builds. No one becomes better by starting off with “cheese”. He didn’t even say he wants to play tPvP. Not to mention that tPvP is not the best place for newcomers.

As for the rest, lets keep the “i am so pro” stuff out of discussion. That’s how children “discuss”. You might not like GS for sPvP but it doesn’t mean there aren’t people out there that actually like it and can make good use of it. I often play all three modes of sPvP with GS/mace+shield. Do I get owned sometimes? Yes I do. Does it mean I will switch to a lame build just to appear on some stupid “Leaderboard” which every “pro” thinks so highly off? No I won’t. I will play what I like and what feels right in my hands. And I believe that’s what OP is actually asking for.

The OP is new to PvP. He must learn the maps, the enemy specs, etc which is a lot easier if you have a working build. Even a top player would struggle with utterly inefficient choices like off-hand axe, I don’t see how does that benefit a newcomer. You know you are doing things right when you are able to win against more and more specs. But if you have one that just does not work, that time will never come and you won’t know what you did wrong. One should gather some experience before trying to make a build on his own.

By only using metabuild.com you will never learn the game. Meta builds are found when you experiment. I’d recommend experiment. This game is so much more complex then hambow………

1) It’s metabattle.com, not metabuild.com.
2) You clearly haven’t visited the site yet. I agree the name can be misleading but most of the builds on the site aren’t meta builds.
3) I wouldn’t recommend experimenting until you master the meta builds for your class and reach the point where you understand why those traits/skills/etc were chosen. After that, you can start to experiment. If somebody is convinced that axe off-hand is good, then there is much to learn.
4) It’s been a while since since the last meaningful patch for most classes (I’m talking about new skills and traits, we haven’t got a single new weapon skill since launch for example). People have spent quite a bit of time experimenting with builds by now, and it’s safe to assume that further experimenting won’t give you a build that’s just as good as any current one.

A bit more about point 4. At least 1 new gamemode is coming soon, chances are many new builds will be made for those, even ones that are unviable in Conquest. As for Conquest, we need a major balance patch or an expansion to breath life into theorycrafting (and maybe we’re better off without it, last thing we need are viable spirit weapons and more passive/spammy play, for example PU mesmer)

to set up your hundred blades is to use the sword burst for the immob, and swap to the greatsword for HB. If they break out, use a whirling wind in the direction they dodged. After, you can use the GS burst if they have low HP or continue auto attacking. You’ll want to use GS for AA and not sword, as sword AA is split with bleeding. Shield 4 sword 3 will work pretty well too if they’re under 50% hp.

everyone who isn’t thick as dogkitten WILL break out as soon as they notice that greatsword you’re holding. and after you fail your primary attack, you’re absolutely useless until you can try it again. GS relies too heavily on 100b which is too easy to dodge for everyone who actually knows how to dodge (17% of players in hotjoin at the moment).

and besides if you use sword for immobilize only, why won’t you use longbow that has even longer immobilize AND it actually does some damage AND it will stack you might AND it will cure your conditions, uuuuhhhhhh bro?

Sword 2 and 3 are useful too. Plus Shield 4 and 5. I think I even mentioned those things in my post but somehow you thought I said sword was only for burst immob? Sword 3 below 50% hp is on par with a full eviscerate, so along with the leap, immob, stun and shield block the sw/sh compliments greatsword.

Regardless of your playstyle though or mine, the guy wanted to know how to be a better warrior in sPvP with the weapon set he enjoys playing with. I suggested some strategies to help land his 100b and how to rotate his skills. Don’t like it? Go play some more cheese then?

Being viable is not the same as being “cheese”. You may give suggestions about how to be “better” on such sets, problem is OP will never reach “good” with the current weapons.

People would love it, I think it would encourage more people to try pvp, or farm solo queues which is good for everyone when we have more players actually playing.

With the current state of matchmaking, soloque would be an unplayable hell for everyone. After ~5 matches you can be matched with or agains the current rank1 – how is that fun for anyone?

Also, I don’ think they will give ways to earn gemstore items without gems – yes, sometimes you can get a booster or you can farm the human storyline for keys, but that method was not really intended IMO.

Metabattle isn’t only for meta builds The main difference between us and your build collection I’d say is that we collect only the effective ones (currently 36 and counting), while you also display some builds only made for fun. More experienced players can distinguish these builds while browsing your collection, but newcomers might think that all of those builds are good and will be surprised if they fail on a 4 signet ele.

Also it’s a community project, if anyone finds a mistake they can correct it under seconds. Besides most of the complaints come from people who are using a different sigil or rune and are too lazy to scroll down to see that we included them as possible options.

The culprit of everything that's wrong

in PvP

Posted by: witcher.3197

witcher.3197

GW2 was always meant to be innovative and regarding that it’s a success, no doubt. But not everything that sounds good in theory works when you carry it out – this post is about my personal feedback on PvP to the devs.

In my opinion everything that’s wrong with PvP is caused by a simple thing: devs want to force FPS element into a MMO. And in case of the combat, the result was an extremely fun and reponsive combat system – but experimenting with combat and doing the same with the structure of Pvp are 2 different things.

FPS browser – Hotjoin
When it was announced, I was pretty hyped for it so I understood what the devs were trying to do. “So I can just join whenever I want to and play? Also, new players won’t be farmed by veterans who prevent them from earning PvP ranks (main issue with GW1’s HA), great! I can rank up there and learn the game!” – this idea was really excellent.

But this never worked. Hotjoin is supposed to be a place where new players learn the basics of the gamemode and the combat, but currently it’s the worst thing a newcomer can do. Matches are never even (I’m talking about the number of players on the sides, not their skill), the entire place is about autobalance abusing and zerging for achievement points. A new player won’t know what’s happening and why, they will just simply learn what they see.

In an FPS it’s fine, because you will learn how to kill other players and that’s what matters, but there are more factors than that in an MMO – pve players, players who don’t care about the objectives because they are just farming, players who are busing autobalancing. There is no PvP in hotjoin.

There is no place for new players to learn the game, hotjoin is a place where they will master the exact opposite of how the game should be played. This place corrupts newcomers – people who think they know enough based on their hotjoin experiences will ruin every rated match they play, and they will have to learn how to play again – which means they must forget everything they currently know about the gamemode. No wonder many of them don’t bother and just leave the game’s pvp side.

We will never have a healthy PvP as long as hotjoin exists.

FPS elements in map design
Cough Skyhammer Cough. You never see a single post about players asking for the removal of Foefire or Temple, but Skyhammer-hate is a thing since the day it was added. Devs claim that it’s a map heavily influenced by Quake – but again, GW2 is an MMO, and this map is as close to adding headshot as a game mechanic as it can be. Except the fact you don’t even have to aim.

Side note: even if you think it’s the minority who dislikes this map, you, as developers, should stay objective and ask the question – “Is it suitable for rated play? A map where you can kill 5 people by pressing a single button, out of combat? A map, where you can kill other players with 1 skill even if the other was winning the duel with max hp?” – with such a random factor, how are we supposed to have a decent matchmaking, ever? Just because you can press 2 buttons doesn’t mean you can actually play the game. Playing the game, using the combat system as intended is actually a disadvantage on this map. Skyhammer is as suitable for rated play as Keg Brawl. It’s basically just another PvP minigame.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love this game, I just want to say, stop pursing FPS games, because everything that’s wrong with PvP comes from this intention.

Countless's PvP Suggestions

1 – This would be awesome. Builds and classes should be locked but then necro should start with some life force.
2 – Open to abuse. I would rather they just deleted skyhammer.
3, Don’t care
4, Yes and yes – two of the biggest issues with pvp in my view.
5, How do you mean? People shouldn’t be able to evade (weapon skill) when immobalised. Immobalised stacking should be removed, and getting immobed mid dodge should be fixed.
6, Pretty clutch I agree
7, Id rather have gold for rewards, the chests are just boring to open.

Regarding number 2- They literally said in another thread that they will never delete skyhammer, so a vote system would be the most logical compromise.

True but people keep asking for the wrong things. They don’t need to delete the map, just remove it from rated play and keep it in hotjoin. But people are just getting mad (for a good reason) and want to see this map 6 feet under.

Why lord rush over annihilation?

in PvP

Lord Rush over a deathmatch is better since in a 15+ vs 15+ environment (hoping these new maps are for 15+ vs 15+ matches) a deathmatch could last forever: half a dozen of thieves could “permastealth” the entire team, for example.

It’s been stated many many times that there won’t be PvP formats for more than 5v5. And that’s totally the right decision.

If you want to zerg and spam autoattack you already have WvW for that.

Besides, with smaller formats, every guild can participate and larger guild can just split into smaller guild groups = everyone is happy.

SAB is an April Fools’ Day content, and be glad Anet gave you SAB in september once. 2v2 and 3v3 deathmatch should be best of 3 rounds, if you die youre dead, not a respawn fest.

Obviously. The current implementation of Courtyard is terrible because it doesn’t work that way.

In GW2, guilds gain Influence and Guild Merits for doing regular or guild events, playing PvP matches, or doing WvW. You can get nice bonuses in PvE and upgrade your guild in many ways. Guild can also unlock guild content in PvE.

The only PvP related thing in the guild panel is a boost that gives you bonus influence for PvP matches. And that’s all.

Pvp desperately needs guild content and I’m glad they are finally doing it (or at least it seems like they do that).

How is lord rush guild content? It’s just a different mode.

A gamemode that will likely come with a guild ladder instead of individual ratings. It’s called GvG, not lord rush.

About Deathmatch: if you want 2v2 and 3v3, you likely mean an arena type gamemode which is not deathmatch but Annihilation (you can’t respawn in annihilation but you can in Deathmatch). Deathmatch in GW2 is like a clash of 2 endless zombie hordes, but Annihilation would be a good addition.

Skyhammer

in PvP

Posted by: witcher.3197

witcher.3197

The issue is not about who likes or dislikes Skyhammer.

The question is – is it suitable for rated play? Skyhammer is a map where you can bypass combat and still kill people with a single skill, and you can wipe an entire teamfight with a single button. I’d go as far as considering Skyhammer a minigame like Sanctum Sprint or Keg Brawl – just because you are “good” at skyhammer doesn’t mean you can actually play the game.

How could we ever have a working matchmaking with such a random factor in it? It’s basically the same as randomly giving players a win or lose after 3-4 matches. Or like making a football championship where every 4th match is basketball.

Biggest problem is that the devs aren’t objective when it comes to this map, and this attitude has no place in a company like ArenaNet.

It’s not that simple (IMO). Let’s say you don’t allow people to play rated matches until rank 20 – that means they have to play hotjoin where they will learn the polar opposite of things one should do during a match. Maybe this would just make everything a lot worse.

If we we ever want to have a healthy PvP, hotjoin needs to go and some kind of unranked que with hidden matchmaking has to take its place. CAs would stay ofc, but with rank rewards removed, solely for practice, fun, dailies or tournament organizing.

Or just no longer give rank points to the loser team, so they may actually try to figure things out and play to win – autobalance abusing would still be an issue and matches would still be uneven pretty much every single time.

[PvP] Making Warrior GS more viable in 2 mins

witcher.3197

Biggest problem with GS is that Hundred Blades is hard to land – which is fine because of how strong this skill is. People who try to make it work usually have to sacrifice a utility slot to pick a CC. Warriors using GS usually go with a setup of 4 in Strength, 6 in Defense, 4 in Discipline. My suggestions focus on enhancing it.

1) In Strength’s Adept part basically there is nothing worthwile for people who don’t dual-wield – but on Master tier there are 2 traits that benefit this build. My suggestion is that you move Physical Training to Adept and maybe move Short Temper up (I’m sure that won’t hurt any builds)? This way we can have Physical Training (to reduce the CD of Bull’s Charge or Throw Bolas) AND Slashing Power.

2) Tactics line – GS builds barely use it in PvP, but you could change this. Leg Specialist causes 1 sec immob if you cripple a foe and has a 5 sec CD. Considering that warriors really can’t spam cripples, maybe you should reduce the CD to 1 seconds – Bladetrail cripples foes in a line, and then comes back to you, crippling them again – from the right distance and with the right aim, this could Immobilize targets twice. This would give GS an option to root targets for a bit of time to land some 100blades hits. Best part is that it wouldn’t affect Hambow at all – they are using this trait but only have 1 skill that causes cripple.

These really are some minor things that could make it a lot more viable. Would it be meta? Probably not, but it could definitely improve the build.

@Absconditus.6804 – from the wikipedia article you’ve linked: “however, the precise determination of what is or is not considered an exploit can be controversial. This debate stems from a number of factors but typically involves the argument that the issues are part of the game and require no changes or external programs to take advantage of them” / “These are commonly achieved by going through walls, crossing invisible barriers made by the programmers, or scaling ledges not intended to be climbable.”

None of these fit these spots (I’ve alreay explained how you aren’t going through walls) And pretty much what Neptune said – people use these on higher ratings every day since launch, even at the all-star tournament at gamescom or ToL matches and when there are events where the devs face the community, they see mesmers using these spots against them – so devs are totally aware of it.

Neptune brough up that you need to destroy boxes in a corridor in order to make a spot work – which proves that the boxes mess up the pathfinding and put the destination out of range. You need the specific spots so the pathfinding won’t mess it up – look at it in a similar way how a ground targeted teleport’s aoe ring turns red if you are out of range, or if you are aiming at the wrong spot it won’t teleport you up, only closer, it’s exactly like that you just don’t see the aoe ring for this one.

Every single thief/guardian teleport that needs a target works without line of sight and they can pretty much follow the mesmer to all these spots by pressing a single button, they don’t even need to aim, do you consider that an exploit too?

I must say I’m having a great time reading these totally clueless comments that ignore my reasoning and keep calling it an exploit. All of these spots are accessible by walking, not even jumping is required. And it’s called teleport for a reason. There is no such thing as “works every 6th time” – you just missed the spot 5 times.

It’s just so clear you never tried this and don’t know what you are talking about.

And classes need these little things that people must learn to use over time The game would lose a really interesting and deep part by removing it (and there is no reason to do so).

I disagree: a skill behavior must be intuitive. If by you cannot guess what will really happen if you have not tried a skill in the same context (here loclisation/map) before..then it is bad design.

Well I doubt any skills have written guides to them when you are looking at the tooltips. You must figure them out yourself. Some are easier, some have tricks, that’s why guides exist

Vee Wee isn’t going to reply to such unfrandly remarks towards Vee Wee! Vee Wee is the #1 frandliest person NA

“UPDATED AGAIN AGAIN METABATTLE SUCKS kitten " – from your stream description.

“…so for that kitten you. secondly, yes like you said builds may be edited, altered, or REMOVED so kitten you again i am removing it…” – it’s you on the discussion page, pre-moderation. I think i don’t have to explain which words are there instead of kitten.

Suggestion: add Vee Wee #1 liar NA to your signature so it might have something that’s actually true.

The proof is the usage section in the meta mesmer build! It’s blank because they have no idea how to play it!

i lol’d!

the logic, it’s flawless!!

although i have to agree with the guide you posted. he is indeed one of the best mesmers around and the guide is very well done

The reason behind having a blank usage page is that Helseth said a while ago that he will make a mesmer video (promised before all-star vote) – likely he did not have enough free time or will to make it yet, but basically we are waiting for that one – why would we work twice. But it’s a community project, anyone can help out.

Don’t listen to ArrDee’s lies and have fun playing mesmer ^^ Double Ranged Shatter’s page on metabattle btw was checked by Helseth himself.

And I love how you are speaking about “buildS” just because you did not agree with a single sigil.

Stop embarrassing yourself with your lies Vee. We get it, you don’t like us, move on. This site did more for the community already than you ever will (no offense) so don’t try to shoo away people who need this. Thank you

Or do you have anything that actually contributes to the discussion?

@ nearlight – maybe it’s a strong roamer, but problem is, the guy who uploaded the build overtagged it for no reason – which means he made this build to be used in PvP, Zerg, roaming, Dungeons and general PvE – which obviously means it got negative ratings from the sections it does not belong to.

@ Bhawb – gwpvx never had such problems, for multiple reasons I’d guess. If someone’s running an entirely garbage build and is convinced about it being good, are not the players who have the dedication to rate builds on such sites (usually). Why would you rate something you have no clue about anyways? Sure, there may be 1-2 occasionally, but chances are there will be an overwhelming majority who knows what they are doing. Even with few voters this works pretty well currently (but has some flaws, nothing is ever perfect). The the number of users/voters grows every day, which improves the effectiveness of the rating system.

@ Killshot – people tend to forget that there aren’t more than 5-7 dedicated (and active) teams on each region (EU/NA). The scene’s pretty small currently. Securing the 8th(?) place is an achievement nevertheless, but does not make a build good.

I’m sure we wouldn’t be having this conversation if it wasn’t Olrun who submitted the build, think about it. And he said even he won’t be able to vouch for this build after the patch. Aside from the reasons mentioned above: I’m sure the only reason this build even did damage is the Asura who’s holding the rifle – 3 sec cast time, stationary, can be blinded / dodged / blocked / LoS’d / interrupted, you can’t pull it off vs half-decent players, except if you are so tiny they don’t even notice you – and even this will be gone after the standard enemy models become a thing.

Edit: don’t forget, GW PvX had more builds under the Trash/Archived categories than under the Working ones.

Off-hand sword fits soldier amulet too. It allows you to use the Dual-Wielding trait on the Strength line, and a full Impale still does 4463 dmg to moving targets on Soldier which is not bad at all. Not to mention off-hand Sword provides 2 and 1/4 sec block on 15 sec CD while shield gives a 3 sec block on a 30 sec CD.

But this build has many situational things, not to mention player preference (dogged march or sure-footed, warrior’s sprint vs signet mastery, hoelbrak vs pack vs str runes, etc). We can’t please everyone at the same time, that’s why we have the “Variants” sections.

About the voting, double ranged shatter isn’t the easiest spec ever, still had a 5.0 rating. I’d say it’s just that for most people killshot’s not worth the effort you have to put into it just to even make it acceptable.

How are you reproducing this with Blink then? Or a Shadowstep. You are teleporting through a wall, into a structure. Just because you can do it, doesn’t mean it’s not an exploit. Just because it has existed since Beta, doesn’t mean it’s right. Personally, I weren’t aware of it, nor have I seen many players take advantage of it when I have played structured on those maps, so I don’t think it’s necessarily widely known (Note, for clarification: I am talking about actually teleporting through the wall, not general teleportation up on ledges). Teleporting up on ledges and such, which you can also do with the ground-targeted Blink/Shadowstep mechanics, those I’m all for and think adds flavor to the professions that can do them, but when we teleport actually through stuff in the way presented in that guide, that should simply be reported and fixed.

And I agree, the skill is well designed, fun and adds depth to the profession. It’s just not working correctly if it sends you through a wall like that. That’s a very cheap way to get there. I remember when it used to constantly plop me below the terrain, they fixed that.

It does not teleport you through walls, that would be unintended and impossible.

Let me tell you that it totally does not matter if a wall is there or not.

Phase Reatreat works in a different way – it won’t take you directly through the wall and won’t make you able to teleport into boxes and structures, the skill calculates the distance between you and the destination by how big the distance would be by walking – so the skill is using the stairs of the Clocktower, your destination is a simple high ground, the wall is insignificant. This is why you can’t teleport up to ledges where the stairs are miles away or the given terrain has no entrances at all – the skill has a range afterall, if the distance is too big or you can’t approach it by simple walking it won’t port you up – this pathfinding even excludes jumping, so only works if the destination is easily approachable.

So again, this is an intended thing.

If you want to know what unintended truly means: on Khylo Shadow Shot recognizes buildings as “enemies” (because they can take damage from Trebuchets), therefore if you shoot into the wall it will port you inside (the skill takes you to the target it hits). Now that is kinda unintended and it does teleport you throught an objective – but even that won’t take you into places you couldn’t get to by walking so even Shadow Shot is borderline acceptable.

And classes need these little things that people must learn to use over time The game would lose a really interesting and deep part by removing it (and there is no reason to do so).

Your examples 4-7 of Khylo should be reported as bugs (I assume you already have, but why even put it in a guide then?). That’s no longer teleporting up on a ledge that is otherwise also accessible through running, that’s straight up glitching through terrain, a wall. Technically it’s reachable through running, true enough, but I find using stuff like that as being pure exploiting.

All of these spots are legit, these aren’t bugs or glitches, these things exist since Beta. Images 4-7 are harder than 1-3, but that’s the only difference between them – they are both accessible by running, it’s not a terrain glitch, it’s just a less obvious thus more clever usage of terrain. Phase Reatreat is a low CD teleport skill, only real difference between this and Blink or Infiltrator’s Arrow is that it’s not ground targeted, which makes it harder to aim with.

I think this skill is great design and adds depth to the class.
