And why would Anet make a gamemode for ~100 people? Not everyone can get 19 core players for a team who can be online at the same time.

GW1 had GvG. GW2 does not, but some people decided to call their abomination GvG. Now that GvG’s happening and is inspired by GW1, WvW zerglings are upset that “it’s not GvG”. What a joke.

I’ve never said portal’ll be abandoned. I just wanted to point out that mesmer’s still a threat to the enemy even without the utilitiy it brings. I know Helseth was experimenting, but I wan’t only talking about him. Supcutie and other mesmers have switched portal for some condi cleansing during some matches too.

Don’t get me wrong, I acknowledge the utility mesmer brings to the team. But don’t act like other zerker specs don’t have any utility. What about S/F eles? They have insane burst and Swirling Winds for utility, which hurts Engies / Rangers a lot. S/D eles got even more burst, mobility, and AoE healing. They can block, blind and teleport away too, yet you don’t see them around because thieves demolish them in teamfights.

After you use stealth as a mesmer and manage to get out of LoS the thief will lose track which allows you to reposition yourself for a bit (or allows you to counterburst). This is easy on Khylo, Temple and Forest. Just try playing without any stealth on mes vs a team with a good thief and tell me if you feel just as viable as before the change.

I disagree with this. Every class can buy some time against thieves by kiting. Ele has obsidian flesh for example, warrior is tanky as it is and has endure pain to buy the time.
Surviving against thieves for x time isn’t really the reason.
I think the main reason is that mesmer has better mobility and brings insane, unique stuff to the teamthrough boon rip (can rip more than any other class), a lot of stomp/rez negation through boon rip and dazes/knockback + portal allows you to do some insane stuff. Moa is insta death on enemy, no matter which class.Time Warp is also awesome and very underestimated.

Mesmer definitely brings some great utility to the group, I agree but this discussion is about hardcounters. Most mesmers don’t use TW anyways, some of them are abandoning portal even on higher levels, and moa is so easy to avoid (plus even when youre turned into a Moa you can usually kite away perfectly).

If the ele uses Obsidian Flesh or the warrior uses Endure Pain, the thief can just port away / wait in stealth and the second the duration’s gone the thief’s back on the target (steal, infiltrator’s signet, infiltrator’s strike, shadow shot, they have plenty of ways to do it). With stealth you can escape a lot better as the thief will actually lose track of you, which lets you reposition yourself a lot better with the additon of phase retreat / blink (without stealth the thief could still follow you doesn’t matter what kind of teleport you’re using).

My build in my signature was inspired by watching Countless wreck fools night after night. It’s heavier on the condi with taking Scepter instead of sword. Both are excellent dueling builds!! Signets for the win!

Out of curiosity, what makes this build effective in most cases over something like a zerker build?

Classic zerker shatter builds have 0 condi cleansing, while this build offers a fair amount of that. You have access to 5 different sources of distortion (shatter, sword, and 3 signets) which makes it very defensive, meanwhile a single Duelist phantasm can stack ~8 bleeds on your target if you make them tank it with a stun or root – and ofc, if they try to cleave them down that inflicts additional conditions.

The celestial meta came to be because those builds can do everything. To some extent it was a response to thieves, but even without thieves, people would have discovered the cele + might stacking potential.

However thieves make every other berserker spec unviable. Burst specs rely heavily on positioning, which is impossible because the thieves have so many (often LoS ignoring) gapclosers, and if they are losing the duel they can just go into stealth/port away almost anytime, reset themselves and land a burst from stealth.

Mesmer is not that much of a problem – stealth makes it a bit better than other zerkers, this is why it’s still around. It’s still hardcountered by thieves, but at least the mesmer can buy some time with stealth.

Your problem is your assumption as to why only shatter has made an appearance in top torny play. You could make arguments based on Mesmer vs Other classes as a whole, but you can also point fingers at those few top players who’ve run shatter (and not something different) themselves.

I’m curios about what “superior utility” shatter brings over lockdown builds. Is it portal? Because if its portal there’s plenty of room for portal on the bar as those builds aren’t so tied to their survival utils (decoy + blink).

In terms of CC, lockdown/rupt builds far outshine anything a typical shatter build can hope to dream of bringing to the table. Shatter is AoE burst damage with boon strip to keep it sexy. Other than that, Shatter Mes has to gtfo of the way almost all of the time.

The OP is rather mistaken. For a long time now, 20/20/30 CI shatter has been the meta shatter build to use.

It’s so meta that nobody ever uses it in tournaments. The forum fandom of ~r30 players does not reflect what’s viable.

1st – I’m glad you managed to calm down.
2nd – if you have no idea about what’s going on atm, then don’t derail a thread so hard that 50% of the comments are made by you being mad at something you don’t understand. I’d deeply appreciate it.
3rd – those warhorn nerfs are needed. Shoutbow provides insane condi cleansing and it takes even less effort than a hambow in its prime. It’s just another spammy spec that hardcounters every single condi spec. If we nerf shouts, we nerf PvE and WvW too which I wanted to avoid, while warhorn has a smaller impact in those areas of the game. Increasing horn skill CDs reduces condi cleansing and brings vigor application more in line with other classes.

Elementalist

  • Renewing Stamina – This still provides a permanent vigor uptime, every other class was nerfed in this regard (engineer, guardian, mesmer). Increase the trait’s CD from 5 seconds to 8 seconds, and decrease vigor duration to 3.5 seconds (as every ele puts at least 4 points into Arcana so the passive 20-30% boon duration will make them have a fair vigor uptime, and the 8 sec CD makes it more rewarding to remove vigor with boonstripping).

Lol. Every other class was nerfed? Well, are you suggesting minor adept guard and mesmer trait should be better than major ele adept trait? Guards and mesmers have 5 sec of vigor on 10 sec cooldown without wasting any trait slots while ele actually has to choose that trait over something else. Why should it be worse? Engis have 5 sec vigor on 5 sec cooldown in the very same tree that has boon duration, too. Again, why should ele have something worse? I know that the engi trait works with swiftness that doesn’t proc that often but that still doesnt change the fact the vigor traits are the same atm.

Warriors with traited warhorn are close to perma vigor, too.

Engineers must take 2 traits for it. And they did nerf engi Vigor, by increasing kit swiftness duration/proc from 5 to 10 seconds. You think they did that to spare your fingers?

Complete newbie to ranked arena is writing about how the game should be balanced, ha ha ha.

As I’ve said, it’s alt account mainly used for fun and build testing. But since this is so important for you, I’ve checked pre-december standings in both soloque and teamque. You never made it to the top 1k (strange I thought you were a true veteran). I made it to top 19 soloque and 222 teamque (mostly solo) using specs like GS warrior with this acc. Let it sink in.

And the guy you’re backing barely played more than 100 games in ranked pre-dec, while I have 7/8 champ titles on main acc. But yes, he’s a seasoned high tier warrior who is in a position to judge the viability of a build when he thought Hambow was balanced in 2013.

You’re always defending everything about your class (warrior). You don’t really have any credibility.

If anything, change Combustive Shot not to proc Cleansing Ire if the intial explosion doesn’t hit any non-minion/pet.

Not hitting anything with that is a form of art.

First of all I’d like to say I’m pleased with most of the upcoming changes, I just don’t feel like it’s enough. The following things are missing from the list, IMO:

Elementalist

  • Renewing Stamina – This still provides a permanent vigor uptime, every other class was nerfed in this regard (engineer, guardian, mesmer). Increase the trait’s CD from 5 seconds to 8 seconds, and decrease vigor duration to 3.5 seconds (as every ele puts at least 4 points into Arcana so the passive 20-30% boon duration will make them have a fair vigor uptime, and the 8 sec CD makes it more rewarding to remove vigor with boonstripping).
  • Elemental Attunement – ~50% protection uptime is OP, especially if it comes from a trait, and it’s just a part of a trait. Don’t overnerf it, but cut the Protection duration by ~20%.

Warrior

  • Warrior specs were slightly overnerfed with 2 adrenaline changes. You should revert 1 back, or alter it. I liked the counterplay of “you dodge it, his Cleansing Ire won’t proc and the adrenaline goes away”. But this clearly removed specs with well animated, single target burst skills from the meta such as Axebow. Another thing is, this made it harder to benefit from cleansing ire: You miss with axe, your adrenaline is gone, CI won’t proc, and you won’t have enough adrenaline for an effective Combustive shot-Cleansing Ire proc. What I’d do: if the attack misses, the adrenaline is depelted but cleansing ire will proc. So there’s still some counterplay, but more room for weapons other than Longbow/Hammer/Sword. Nerfed condi cleansig is part of the reason why Shoutbow took over.
  • Back to Vigor. Call to Arms – with the Shoutbow traits, this warhorn skill will maintain nearly permanent vigor on all nearby allies. Also cleanses a condition. Increase CD from 20 to 25 seconds and nerf the base vigor duration from 10 seconds to 8 seconds.
  • Charge. Another warhorn skill. Cures every single soft-CC condition, maintains permanent Swiftness and cures a conditon, all in a short CD and in AoE. Insane. Increase CD from 15 to 20 seconds.
  • Combustive Shot – that’s a pretty large AoE, but this makes it unique. However, duration should be reduced by 20-30%.

Mesmer

  • Ether Feast Make it remove conditions: 0-1 clones: 1 condition removed, 2-3 clones: 2 conditions removed. This is far from OP but still helps shatter specs a lot. They have enough problems with thieves, give them a break.

Engineer

  • Basically untouched in the current patch preview while even high tier teams are stacking them.
  • Overcharged Shot. More like OverPowered Shot. Add an animation and a 0.5 sec cast time.
  • Gear Shield – if traited, you’ll have a 3 sec long block on 16 sec CD which is obviously too strong. Reduce the block duration from 3 to 2 seconds.
  • Magnet- animation must be visible even if the engi is in stealth.
  • Turrets. We’re talking about self repairing, condition/crit-immune pets with good damage and CC. Yes they are stationary. Does not change the fact how hard the risk/reward balance is off here when it comes to combat. It’s easier to kill a bunker guardian than destroying a Thumper Turret.
    • Nerf turret hp by 30%, damage by 20%.
    • Rifled Turret Barrels – this trait should increase range by 25%, not 50%.
    • Metal Plating – currently reduces damage dealt to turrets by 30%. Shave it to 20%.

Ranger

  • More of a bugfix. Longbow skills #3-4 go on full CD if they are interrupted, this should be fixed.

Celestial Amulet

  • While the might nerf is good, sustain’s still too strong. Shave it by 10-15%.

Sigils

  • Sigil of Intelligence – reduces the amount of charges from 3 to 2.
  • Sigil of Fire/Air/Blood – these sigils just shouldn’t even exist. It’s an animation based game. You must learn what to avoid, when and how. Let’s say you dodge 2 hard hitting attacks because you know how you’re supposed to play against your opponent. But then the guy hits you with something that’s not even dangerous, and that hit takes 20% of your hp because it procced 2 sigils. An ideal DPS sigil is like Sigil of Force – hard hitting skills will hit harder, landing a burst is rewarding and avoiding a burst is also rewarding, there’s a lot less randomness.
  • Sigil of Doom – I’m not a fan of giving powerful conditions by sigils/runes to classes who don’t have access to that condition, like D/D eles or Warriors because it makes balancing a lot harder. But if it’s going to happen, then at least reduce the condition duration from 6 seconds to 3-4 seconds.
  • Sigil of Geomancy – reduce the amount of bleed stacks from 3 to 2. To spike someone with conditions just by swapping weapons does not promote skillful play.

I feel like these changes would reduce both sustain and damage to a reasonable level. What do you guys think? Have I missed something?

You want to use a well to bait out another classes cooldowns? Ok…. baiting out what? The defense against wells is just don’t stand in it lol….

Dps wells vs theif. Theif sees well theif waits while shortbowing you while you attempt to hit a theif with staff and marks on a power necro…. theif gonna win that one. I’d let a necro freecast staff at me all day and if I see he goes into ds I just back off for a second and come back and own the necro who just burned a utility for no reason as well as his ds is either used up or on cd now and that build doesn’t use ntd.

Yes it’s conquest but a necro right now is a +1 roaming class not a point holder.

Dark pact or DS fear (while chilled so the enemy’s moving slower) + wells, yeah sure walk out. You can force Distortion, Blink, Endure pain etc.

And the thief part is not that simple.. but I’ll just stop instead of putting effort into writing a guide about how to use wells vs a thief.

Also, don’t use staff as a power weapon. Swap it with axe/focus and make sure you keep that LF up so you can burst down anything in just a few seconds or even just to use DS as an oh kitten! Button

Staff fits every build and is a recommended one for every nec spec.

Like a year ago, for a short period of time, I believe we had profession locking. I logged out from warrior, changed to nec, map loaded in and I was on my warrior again. They should bring this back while keeping the DC grace period.

Another thing, if these suggestions happen they have to lock players to their base until the game starts so people can’t spy on the enemy comp by goin to their base.

I just don’t like it when people present their (often incorrect) opinions as facts. When I couldn’t manage to convince NeXed I’ve tried to point at someone who could, that’s all. Top players are the ones who are pushing builds to the limit and effectiveness becomes more important than difficulty. Like how you don’t see any PU mesmers in tournaments but it’s a popular build among beginners because shatter is a lot harder (but also a lot better).

So if I bring an environment artist here to tell you this spec is good you’ll believe him 100%, but you don’t trust someone who’s been playing on the highest level of PvP and has thousands of ranked matches behind him.

Maybe arenanet had an idea about what they are creating, but you can be sure it was not like: “people will use these traits with exactly these utilities/sigils/runes in that given meta”. Working/popular builds are created by players with considerable experience who are experimenting with the provided tools. You think the guy who invents a sport will be its best player of all times and will understand tactics better than top teams? Arenanet had no idea about dungeon stacking until the game launched and players began to bypass a part of the combat this way.

You’re just arguing for the sake of arguing and can’t contribute to this discussion so let’s not derail this thread.

But thanks for that link! Don’t know how I missed it.. But I see it’s a hybrid build with celestial amulet. I’ll definitely give it a shot, but is there a “pure” condition build? Or would it not be as effective?

For axe/sword you could use a tanky amulet too -> with Intelligence sigil you’ll keep the Eviscerate burst and you won’t be oneshotted.

For a pure condition build Mace/Sword is superior to S/S, as you’ll have access to an additional damaging condition (Confusion), another short block/reflect and significant single-target CC.

I really don’t think that particular build should even be called meta. It’s really not the best power necro build available.

There is always that 1 special snowflake who knows it better than Nos.. if this build’s good enough for him it should be good enough for you too.

What would you change? I assume you’d take the WvW approach and sacrifice incredibly significant AoE pressure (wells and DS piercing) for sustain.

Umm wait so Nos is the special snowflake? His word is law and we all must follow the all knowing Nos? IDK if a developer tells me something I’ll accept it 100% but Nos is just a player. Sure he has experience but he isn’t a developer. Nos is good but The Abjured is beast and make him look even better. To attack someone for not agreeing with you seems childish.

The part I highlighted just made me lol so very very hard.

You have no idea what the discussion’s about and I’m not refering to Nos as “special snowflake”, please read it again.

We were discussing what’s more effective and I referred to someone’s build who’s considered to be the best nec atm. Sad truth is, for most people on this forum “easier to play” means “more effective”.

While I agree that staying alive is not always an easy task with this build for beginners if they are being focused in a teamfight, dealing damage is pretty easy. It’s not like a mesmer where you have to be even more careful and bursting takes effort. You hit a mesmer 3 times with your DS autoattacks (and he can’t even use clones to bodblock it because the attack pierces) and he’s dead.

This is what I’m using, it’s more than 2 different traits. I’m only losing out on damage when someone is below 50% health. And I can stay alive a lot longer than the other build. I’m going to continue to use it as long as I keep winning. Only running solo i am 28-6, some of those losses are dcs that were only recently added. I suppose it’s just my personal style but anyone that is struggling staying alive with that metabattle build should try this.

But that’s what I’m talking about. You sacrifice way too much damage for a tiny bit of sustain, mainly anti-condition defense. If you have trouble with condies then replace Warhorn with Dagger. If you want more stunbreakers, you can drop 1 dps well (I wouldn’t do this tho), but dropping both is too much – a single well can destroy all the turrets summoned by Supply crate for example.

This version sure is more forgiving, but not better.

When does Nos ever use this build or any high level necro for that matter.

Power necs are not common at major tournaments, but top necs still use this build sometimes when they are queing for rated matches. Here is some gameplay footage by Nos using the exact same build (video starts as condi but then he switches to power). You can find the build in his stream description too.

I also wouldn’t keep the air fire sigils on the staff, I do use them on warhorn dagger. The builds not all bad don’t misunderstand me it’s pretty close to the one I use the most with the exception I do 4/4/0/0/6. D/w air fire, staff energy the next sigil is preference typically battle, fire, generosity are the ones I use. Pack runes and utilities sa and sw the next one is up to you but I typically take wos,wop,cb,bip depending on what I see I’m going against.

I understand what you’re trying to do with that trait change, but it’s not worth it at all. The rest comes down to personal preference and all of those are listed on the site as customization options, and regarding sigils/rune I’m running the same as you

What would you change? I assume you’d take the WvW approach and sacrifice incredibly significant AoE pressure (wells and DS piercing) for sustain.

IMO there is one thing that cripples most PvP mesmer builds: the fact that you have to put 4 points into Dueling for Deceptive Evasion, a trait that should simply be a part of the class.

In the standard shatter build, people could move at least 2 points from dueling for things like Mender’s Purity (which removes 2 conditions when using a healing skill) mitigating the condition problem of power-based mesmers without making it OP.

In case of this build, people could pick up both PB and CI, maybe even Mender’s Purity for a heavily interruption based build.

DE’s holding back mesmers really really hard and won’t allow for PB without sacrificing something more valuable.

Longbow can be considered mandatory for Power-based builds in PvP.

Shortbow is for condition builds, but you can live without it.

Some people try to use both bows in the same build, but it’s just not recommended.

For PvP, you either take Hammer or GS, not both as Scepter/Focus is a recommended secondary set in every DPS guard build.

the best way to avoid ‘build wars’ would be to hide display whos in enemy team before it starts, so you could just adjust your own setup by picking synergies in your team and counter class stacking. If you hide whos in enemy team, people won’t be able to pick ‘counters’ and ‘build wars’ won’t happen.

I really like this idea, passing it along to the team.

Just a note, hiding them on the scoreboard is not enough. You have to lock people to the spawn zone so they can’t go to the enemy base to check out their comp that way.

I think they had incredibly good ideas with the match making and the ladder but ruined it all with one stupid idea. Making solos play vrs premade teams.

I think the reason behind this is the following: they don’t want to have 4 join options for 1 gamemode, especially if other gamemodes will be added at some point, and this is a valid concern.

But they made a bad call. Instead of replacing Hotjoin with Unranked que (which is a recurring suggestion since launch), they replaced Soloque and kept Hotjoin – and we all know you can’t learn anything about the game in hotjoin.

Solution: hotjoin has to go and Soloque must come back.

Edit: there should still be a game browser tab for player-owned custom arenas, only for practicing / hosting tournaments, with rewards disabled.

It’s so fake.. the guy who wrote this does not even know WTS 2’s next and not WTS 3. And the necro nerfs are just too extremely harsh despite the fact barely any top teams take necs.

And there are just too many “dream fixes” like teleport/steal bug, staff mark animations, incendiary powder buff icon, etc. Basically every fix the community wanted for 2+ years will suddenly happen in the next balance patch? I doubt it.

After using your elite skill, Lyssa removed every condition from you and you gained every boon in the game for 6 seconds (with a 45 sec CD elite skill it was just kittenedly OP.)

Rune of the Pack should be nerfed too. Either reduced the duration of the AoE boon application (Fury/Might/Swiftness) to 5-7 seconds (down from 10) or increase CD to 30 sec (up from 20).

50% Fury uptime (or more if you’ve got boon duration) for you and your allies, passively, from a single rune is just not right IMO.

S/D’s not about stealthing, that’s not the type of utility you should focus on. And having the stunbreaker signet helps a lot.
