I’m not sure of the original posters intentions but from my perspective, having played thief for the better part of a year now is that I honestly wish the rare and minuscule buffs we get would be for anything other than damage. I understand that p/p has low damage outside of unload but I would rather anett buff anything else over giving us more damage.
I’m not actually against the damage increase, I’m just saying of all the things they could have buffed for thieves why increase the damage of a weapon set when they could have done any number of other more beneficial changes. And you can’t honestly tell me that as a thief player your first thought is “I need more damage”
Well he’s not wrong, Thief didn’t really need more damage…they needed a buff to everything else..
Disconnected my keyboard unintentionally while leading a zerg in the middle of an epic battle…trying to do the nae nae through the enemy forces using only my mouse.
I often wonder if it’s anet’s version of a social experiment, to see if it’s possible for any group of people to be content. I’ve been playing since day one and I’ve seen a new “sky is falling” thread every day..and the truth is every profession in this game has had some build/ability nerfed in a way we aren’t happy with. We don’t have the metrics to base our judgment on but I suspect the spread of people playing each profession is fairly balanced which suggests that we’re all in the same boat…except Ele…they’re on the yacht.
You could easily do a druid/BM/condition build with settler’s, torch and staff on swap. Honestly with three trait lines you could easily swap out one for duid and still maintain basically the same builds as before.
So it’s just me I guess?
My client has been fully updated since the last patch but today I had a random disconnect and now it’s redownloading 20,000 files.
The argument against stealth doesn’t come from a balance standpoint regardless of how people frame the complaint. It boils down to no one enjoys getting hit from stealth and then having to guess where to retaliate. Balanced or not is a totally different animal, it’s just not fun at all trying to guess where someone is. We will never get over this issue and come to a productive conclusion until this is universally accepted……Think about how annoyed you get when you can’t find your car keys……
if we could bet on matches with a viable spectator mode I’m fairly certain spvp would become a lot more active given that players love having fans/an audience..and consider the streaming viabilty
I love cleric BM ranger build. I run it on occasion in unranked and do absolutely terrible and literally do not care at all. People tend to forget it’s a game with no downside to losing at all.
I’ve seen you run that build on stream and it definitely looks interesting, but why pick snake trap over flame trap? I think flame trap does more damage even with poison master, and the cd is shorter too. It also opens up the WS grandmaster trait, so you could use survival skills for condi removal (this might be personal preference, but I have SoR).
I use Viper’s Nest over Flame trap because it actually does more damage than flame trap. You can stack so much poison with your pet swaps, viper’s nest and weapon skills. I really don’t feel like i need anymore condi clear when I have Healing Spring and Signet of Renewal. I can get poison to tick to 2.5k fairly well on top of the burning and bleeding I already can put with my weapons. The difference in CD is only by 4s which isn’t a whole lot when the trap does more damage and reduces heal effectiveness.
I tested this build versus good d/d eles and it can kill them extremely fast with the constant poison.
I had never considered this, does it really out damage flame trap? Must try this..Would it be worth getting poison duration at all?
Less is more for sure, we don’t need everything revamped, and we definitely don’t need more damage. What we need is utility that isn’t pet based..specifically from traitlines outside of BM.
Asura ranger here, I like the asura animations personally..the whole bobblehead feel is fun.
I love the betting idea.
Balance would probably be the most important thing for pvp also lower the particle effects so people can actually see the pvp. New maps, conquest mode is actually really really dull to play and watch. After watching ESL with a friend of mine the statement he made really summed it up for me, he said “It looks like a bunch of flashy spamming” So I suppose from an outsiders perspective things like that might limit pvp’s viability.
You guys sort of jumped all over the op about this, which sort of supports his point. I don’t think making it bannable is right but if I were a new player and I opened up LFG I probably would assume this is a f2p korean mmo. But, to each his own.. just cant imagine what people need all that gold for, I’m sitting on like 4k gold and i can’t think of anything to buy.
By least you must mean one of the most right? I would venture a guess and say thief is the third most played behind mes and ele.
I’m actually less concerned with the dps and more annoyed at the fact that they’re so hard to kill.
Lower damage on the hammer chain, buff damage on the other weapons. Give warriors a reason to explore builds that don’t really heavily on passive play, maybe by making fast hands baseline or even putting cleansing ire in a different trait line.
Hammer 1c - Suggest reducing the symbol duration by 1 second. Then lower the cast time a little and adjust the direct damage to line up. The biggest problem with hammer is the awful sustained damage and how clunky the auto-attack feels.
Hammer 3 - Projectile needs to be slightly wider. It’s way too easy to side-step it.
Hammer 4 - Mostly fine as-is. The cast time and cooldown is in-line with other single-target CCs. Possibly increase the damage coefficient.
if they reduce the symbol duration we may as well not even have it to be honest, its terrible in it’s current state. I’m sure anet could at least make our auto chain the speed of warrior hammer. Yes we have a symbol on the chain but warrior hammer is also twice as effective of a weapon so I think it’s fair.
It’s hard to tell considering the massive particle effects in teamfights as well. It was frustrating to fight given how my build relies heavily on baiting cleanses and this guy seemed to have an endless supply.
Maybe I missed something, but the only complaints I ever see about rangers come from the rangers on the forums. In my 3 years of playing I’ve never encountered a scenario where the ranger was berated for his existence.
It has no tell but fails unless you’re in range, looking directly at him, he doesn’t dodge it and Elvis reanimates himself to enslave the living. I can’t imagine thieves cry too much about it’s current state.
I see the opposite, way too many rangers…most pewpew longbow, all bad. The sad part is, they’re consistently getting the most kills because people refuse to focus them in teamfights >.>
The best thing to do is never use a longbow build period. In fact I try to never use it regardless of what I’m doing. But I"ve had had a 90% success rate against all manner of thieves using a rabid trapper build with axe/torch.
What would be the maximum amount of cleanses a guardian can have in a single build? I just fought a burn guard on my burn guard and it seemed like the same build, but he cleared twice as many times as I could. Just curious what I’m missing here
You’re the first person to touch on something that I’ve noticed quite a bit about pvp, it’s become less about skill and more about what class/build you happen to be running. Makes you wonder if maybe the least effective builds happen to be the ones with the highest skill required.
I used to play an mmo that had this feature and in this game you couldn’t jump, so I’m sure you can imagine how obnoxious this feature could be. use your imagination.
Just crashed about 3 minutes into a match.
I don’t know why thieves are surprised to receive such firm opposition to their demands for more sustain; they possess already the most annoying, frustrating mechanic ever designed in a MMO : stealth. Their demands become even more ridiculous as they refuse for great part to give up on their access to stealth.
If I’d be you I’d wait to ask anything, it’s crazy to think that mesmers will be left the way they’re now and you don’t want to be there with them when kitten train will hit with its full force
I find things like double endure pain, double elixir engie, distortion mes full healing eles and guardians way more frustrating than stealth. Remember, we can’t do anything to you in stealth except run away or reveal ourselves.
Basilisk venom, assassin’s signet, steal then backstab. You can try the heartseeker into steal combo but the success rate on that depends highly on your skill with it and latency.
Anet, why don’t you simply admit the Trinity is an essential part of gaming beyond the zergs we’ve had for three long years?
This incremental move toward roles, clearly demonstrated in the current and previous beta events, is tiresome.
its not that they trying to get rid of the trinity.
its that they trying to make it so the trinity is…blurredaka instead of being just a tank. or just a healer. or just a dps
you instead are a bit of a healer and a bit of tank(ex. guardian tank builds). or a bit of a healer and a bit of dps(ex thief stealth builds).
or a bit of a tank and a bit of dps(ex. necro power build).
making it so you can perform multiple roles
ex. necro tank/dps = power build. necro heal/tank = bunker build. necro heal/dps = vamperic crit build.ex2. theif tank/dps build = condition removal/crit build. thief heal/tank = stealth spam build with condition removal. thief heal/dps build = heals on crit dmg.
this means while you can try to focus on 1 side of the trinity, its harder than in othergames, as Anet wants you to be able to perform multiple roles. and not focus on 1.
as if everyone just focuses on 1 trinity role, then we only need 3 classes….. hence making it so u need to perform multiple roles to open up the way for multiple classes
Valid points certainly, but I feel like content could be designed in a way that would require things such as boon stripping, stealth, conditions, zerk dps and a variety of builds to succeed so that we don’t end up with the current system of stacking might and vulnerability and smashing the 1 key in a corner. Which I suspect is where anet is going with the new raids ( we can all hope anyway). It’s not even that we need a trinity, we just need content that forces us to think outside of the dps box.
I’m referring to anets stance on the originally proposed idea that everyone can fill every role, which in my opinion causes the game to be somewhat homogenized with no clearly defined difference between professions in pve. I do realize that it has to do with the way pve is designed. Sidenote: why is everyone against a trinity anyway? I’ve been playing mmo’s since EQ pc launch and the trinity was my favorite part of the genre.
All of the problems I just explained right above you.
If you have been playing mmo since Everquest you should know first hand the difficulties getting a tank and healer. Unless you play one yourself that is.
The only mmo that doesn’t have this issue is WoW due to the sheer number of players they have, and even then I heard people complain about top guilds poaching tanks and healers and having no one to replace them with because the replacements were several equipment tiers behind.
I really don’t see the appeal behind trinity unless you are one of the people playing tank or healer and love the special treatment you get over everyone else. Tank and spank is not any better than what we have now. And mechanics that extend beyond tank and spank is not something that only trinity systems can have.
I agree with your points, I’m not for the traditional trinity at all I just find it peculiar that people grab their pitchforks when they hear the term in the forums. zerker only speed run groups are ok though.
I’m not for or against the trinity, but I feel like people don’t consider how bad the “everyone can do everything” attitude really is. I always cringe when I read someone post about how bad the trinity is, yet rave about being mesmer #1,576 with whatever build they got off metabattle.com.
My warrior can’t remove boons. My mesmer can’t stack 25 might. My Ranger can’t send icebow. My Guardian can’t cripple. How come I can’t do everything in a game where everyone says everyone can do everything.

Thief has a place, but given the current bunker/burn meta we have to try a bit harder than perhaps we’ve been accustomed to in past years. This is compounded by the hefty supply of passive defenses every profession has received…except for thief of course.

it could very well be the injection of HoT files into the base client. Perhaps a red name could make that clear at some point. I just wondered if something was wrong with my client.
The patch size on the 25th according to my client was 625mb and I’m just curious if that’s accurate and if so, what was in it that would warrant such a file size?
Why is the birthday reward tied to characters rather than account? Out of curiosity.
I’ve never personally seen a hammer Guardian do anything but make an attempt at running away.
I just wanted to say that I love this matchup, and I highly respect both AR and DR for all the great fights.
I concur with the above poster. Mesmer is a great fit for what you’re looking to do. I spend most my nights back capping camps solo with mine.

If they aren’t overpowered, why is pvp filled with them? food for thought. they aren’t playing them because they’re pretty.
