we have not had any CDI topics for some time now and i wonder if Devs planing on doing more CDI’s threads in the future?

Not that I know of. It’s possible that could happen, but at the current time there are plans to communicate through other means, including forum posts from team members or on behalf of a team and of course on our official website, in the “news” section. (The “news” is really a blog, and that’s where a lot of info goes. Once posted, forum members invited to share their thoughts here on the topic at hand.)

Players can always create their own on an subject that they like and encourage constructive posts. A dev doesn’t need to lead it.

Absolutely! As Qugi suggested, calling it a CDI can be confusing, but you’re welcome to initiate or join a thread on any topic you’d like to discuss.

Hey all,

To better communicate API changes and developments with application developers, we’re trying out gitter. Gitter is basically an in-browser chat with github integration — to use it you’ll need to create a free github account if you don’t have one already (although I think that’s only if you want to post messages).

This is in addition to the forums and github and everything else; feel free to use whatever you’re comfortable with to voice your concerns/feature requests. The more the merrier

The team is actively working on balance changes. You may have seen this thread about upcoming changes to WvW. The changes outlined in that thread were based on designer analysis, testing, observations, and on input from players. After it was posted, the thread then gathered a lot of valuable player feedback which assisted in the development and polishing of changes that will be rolled out in the future.

You’ll continue to see such threads here on the forums. At least one such thread is coming quite soon.

Game balance is a really important topic, perhaps the most important of all. So watch for threads on that subject and we’ll look for your input, feedback, comments, and suggestions.

Account was banned for something i didn't do.

My Support Ticket (#2008478)

First i need to start of by saying that this isn’t really an issue that I’ve seen come up in the past. I’ve had people tell me about past cases of accounts being compromised and the problems a lot of people had because of Digital River a while ago, but this seemingly isn’t one of those cases.

What happened was, i got Heart of Thorns and some gems as a gift at the end of October (about the 28th or so). I played for a week and then my PC died so i went 6 weeks without access to GW2. When i finally came back i found out my account was banned due to a chargeback. Now this is where my case differs from others. Long story short, after a string of blunt and unhelpful emails from Customer Support and multiple phone calls to the bank i came across what seems to be the cause of the problem. Our bank took it upon themselves to cancel the card that was used for the purchase of HoT (which took place at least a full week after the purchase), and the cancellation automatically charged back the purchase(s).

The thing that is bothering me is that Customer “Support” kept specifically saying that it doesn’t matter that i didn’t do anything wrong, something was done and my account pays the price.

That is uncalled for. As a loyal customer for three long years, it should matter to ArenaNet that i have done nothing against their policies yet I’m still suffering the penalties that come with such action. I’ve offered to pay back the money, purchase everything again including HoT and apply the new serial code to my account, to use a new credit card for any purchases so that it’s a clean slate, I even asked if it was possible to have my progress transferred to a new account. But i kept getting the exact same emails over and over again saying that absolutely none of those solutions are possible and that i just have to suck it up and start from scratch because they don’t care that it wasn’t me who did this.

That is just plain wrong. Did i miss the warning somewhere letting me know that i can be punished for the actions of any third party? I assume there is no such warning because accounts that are compromised by a third party get reactivated for the account holder all the time. And so did accounts that had a history of a charge back due to the issues with Digital River (another third party). So is there a list of third parties who’s actions ArenaNet customers can be punished for? And which third parties are the exception to the rule?

I would just like to know how this can be justified and why I’m allowed to be treated like i don’t matter, regardless of how much of a loyal customer i have been for three years.

I’m looking at this; something seems wrong here. Hang tight.

Takes a thread about communication to get communication from the communications team. Bravo.

Oh, it gets even better! It takes a thread about communications to get the forum communication team lead to communicate about continued communications on behalf of the communications team! (But the truth is, the thread arose during our holiday break, so it was a good tidy-up project for today.)

In fact, having two threads allows continued discussion on both topics, without overrun, which makes forum viewing more efficient and effective for all of us.

Great…that thread was merged with this one. Something seems amiss these last couple of weeks.

I think it’s all clear now. Two topics = two threads.

This thread is a good idea. But I think it needs a little help.

Let’s try this:

  • Let’s have this thread be a thread for what was originally intended: The sharing of links to posts that ArenaNet Team Members make on Reddit.
  • Let’s not have this thread be yet another generic thread about communications. You’re welcome to share those thoughts in the forums — many have! But let’s keep this thread on topic: Posts by Devs.

As I’ve said previously, we don’t require posting by any team member, we don’t direct where devs can post, and we don’t approve forum posting by any team member. Please take a look at this thread for details.

This means that having a thread that gathers posts from other sources is a good thing. But putting forum members in the position of having to find those posts amongst a whole lot of off-topic commentary isn’t so good.

Can we keep this on the topic? Not to squelch your thoughts, but to give greatest value to a helpful thread, where other topics can be discussed in an alternative thread?

Hey! I’m really liking how fleshed out the API is becoming, and I was wondering: for the /account authorised endpoint, will total play time across all characters as well as current account AP be added in the near future? Calculating the former based on the playtime of all characters sounds like a workaround but doesn’t take into account characters which were deleted and are no longer providing data.

I just thumbed through the game code and am pretty sure we don’t actually track per-account play time — only per-character play time. Let me know if that’s wrong, but I’m not seeing a field for it anywhere in the account data.

The total AP is actually not a bad idea; I’m not sure why I didn’t add that yet. It’ll probably require the “progression” permission to match a related upcoming change. I’ll make a tracking issue on github for it later.

I just want to say that there is a lot of marvelous new Wintersday art on our Tumblr page, art that came in over the last few weeks. Because the December CSL show was actually scheduled, and art selected, only a day or two after the start of this year’s festival, we knew that the bulk of our art work would come from last year’s submissions. And because we didn’t even have Community Showcase Live last year, that was great — we had a treasure trove of art to highlight!

This year, I see all these wonderful art works and I’m torn. I mean, we could feature them in January, as it’s still Winter, right? But then… what how does that impact our Wintersday show in December 2016? With the lead time needed, and the start of the festival being about the same time as the show, if we feature the art now we’d find ourselves with a shortage of art for that holiday show — and that holiday show is one we really love!

So… I’m going to ask for your forbearance, and let those of you who submitted Wintersday art know that we will be looking at the forums and Tumblr in late November/early December of this new year in order to select from the fantastic pieces that have been submitted, as well as those that are yet to come. ~hint~

Specifically, in your own experience, how often would you say an item changes? Is there anywhere that changes are noted? I would assume after each patch? I am unsure if items can change mid version.

To add to Eearslya’s response, items cannot change unless the value of /v2/build updates — that’s the only time that the dat-reading component (from which anything with localized data originates) pulls updated data. For endpoints that are localized, if /v2/build hasn’t changed since the last fetch, the same data will be returned.

It’s a bit annoying, but our API backend is totally stateless so there’s not a good way for the API to respond to If-Modified-Since requests (or respond with Last-Modified). This issue has been raised a few times in the past (and I opened a github issue today to track it better), but my current recommendation is to do a complete re-fetch of any data persisted by the application from localized endpoints whenever /v2/build updates. There might be a better way to do this in the future, but right now that’s the only recourse available for application developers to always have an up-to-date version of the data.

Guild Permission

Yes, the key just needs the “guilds” permission. All of the APIs tied to it are read-only, so it should be safe.

To add more to this — the “guilds” permission will never allow access to anything that isn’t already shown in the in-game guild panel, but it does allow you to access the info for all guilds that they’re a leader of (e.g., bank guild inventories).

(also, the “account” permission is always required, but it only really allows you to see account name, created date, etc, which shouldn’t be a big deal).

Sorry for the long response time — was on holiday!

Been looking into this for about an hour, and I think the issue is that the permissions for that “Member” rank are deprecated permissions which aren’t currently serialized out properly. If that’s the case, then it should be fixed with the next release — or as a workaround, if you have the guild leader toggle off the existing permissions, save, then toggle them back on and re-save it should start emitting the correct list.

Working on verifying that the fix I’m tinkering with correctly serializes out that rank.

Sorry about that :x

Huh, I totally thought that we didn’t track this at all (and that behavior sounds like a bug to me), but just read through the game server’s logic for handling rank points and it totally does track the number of times the rank rolls over. Any chance we can get Last Login added to the members list?

Ideally also if they are repping the guild or not, so perhaps three states: Repping, NotRepping and Offline. If that isn’t possible maybe a Last Rep date on top of the last log in?

Can definitely look into it. If the rep status is on there, it’ll definitely be separate from the online/offline field — the tristate doesn’t support the “offline but repping” pair. I’m pretty sure last rep date isn’t tracked on the backend though, so that likely won’t be in there (might be wrong).

Is there any chance we could have the upgrades list the vendors they come from? I’ve got guild-aggregated list from a few people (http://gw2mathhammer.com/js/aetherium/upgradedata.js), but I would love to be able to pull from the API instead of crowd-sourcing guildies. Categories/vendors make it a bit unmanageable though.

IIRC when I looked into exposing vendor data in general awhile back it was totally infeasible — the way it works is that there’s a generic “open vendor $id” script command so to only show accessible vendors the backend would have to figure out which scripts it was possible for a player to trigger. A lot of them are pretty easy to figure out since they’re usually tied to dialog options, but there’s a both a handful of debug-only dialogs that you’ll never see as a player, and a handful of vendors that aren’t accessible via dialogs (e.g., the ecto gambling one that you open with an item).

Anyway, the implementation on both our sides would be the same — a hardcoded list. In cases like that I think it’s better to keep it on the application side since you guys can move faster if/when the hardcoded list changes/breaks.

Duplicate Recipes for same Item

in API Development

Posted by: Lawton Campbell

Previous

Lawton Campbell

Web Programmer

Next

I believe in the game, players only see one recipe per item which makes me wonder which one of those recipes are current or obsolete.

I just tried in-game with these recipes — they can be independently discovered and used. After discovery, there’s two instances of “Minor Rune of Earth” in my crafting list — one for each recipe — and I can select which one I want to craft. If the recipe is obsoleted it’s just deleted outright and will stop appearing in the API.

That said, I really have no idea why we’ve got so many dupe recipes.

As for group 2, I had trouble calculating the final cost of material for each Discipline is different and for example an item created by a tailor will be more expensive than the same item created by Armorsmith. I haven’t been able to find a way to implement an option for this in my UI yet.

If you’ve got access to API keys with the characters permission, you can check which crafting professions (at which levels) the user has access to across their characters (example). Using this you can determine whether it would be cheaper to use the more expensive recipe or to level up the crafting rating to use the cheaper recipe (though admittedly it’s a lot of logic to go through all that).

I suggest using the same recipes shared between disciplines (same recipe ID for all of them) just like most of other recipes in game which also makes it consistent.

That’s more of a design thing — I’m under the impression that it is the way it is intentionally, but I can certainly forward your complaint.

Items mentioned in recipes, not found

in API Development

Posted by: Lawton Campbell

Previous

Lawton Campbell

Web Programmer

Next

I’m not sure if this is pointed out somewhere. I was poking around with data extracted from API and noticed there are some recipes that their output item does not exists in Items API. Here are the list.

Guh, I think those are the items that are actually guild upgrades and deposited straight into the guild inventory. I’ll have to dig through the code that handles the crafting bits and see why the whitelist isn’t seeing events for those items — I was pretty sure I had it hooked up right but apparently it’s broken.

Also I would like to know, How you guys handle deleting items or recipes in GW2?

As background, the API gets the item data (and any other data that can be localized) from a backend server whose sole responsibility is serializing data from the .dat file. I’m not altogether too familiar with the internal format of it (I just work against an API for reading it), but my understanding is that all updates are opaque and destructive — there are technically deltas that are used to patch the .dat file, but they’re binary diffs. The only feasible way I know of to check on the before/after versions of an item is to check it in perforce — which the backend servers won’t ever have access to.

My recommendation is to, whenever there’s a new release (e.g., once every two weeks), to do a complete reindex of all the endpoints that have a ?lang parameter. Since you’ve got a copy of the old dataset, you can compute the diff against the new one and store whatever metadata you like.

Sorry I don’t have better news

Markus — I lead the forum team. That means we share messaging, we manage moderation, we handle forum appeals, we organize forums when new ones are required, give forum credentials to new team members, and more. No, I am not in charge of managing, vetting, or directing forum posts by members of the ArenaNet team. Nor should I be.

To be clear: I am not suggesting that the medium is completely UNimportant. I am saying that I feel that communicating is simply more important than the place where the communication is posted.

I take your comments about our non-English-speaking community very seriously. In fact, it’s at the forefront of my thinking every day. We’re able to localize some developer posts, including some of those we gather from other media and particularly the large update posts that you see come along (like the WvW Sneak Peek). Some comments by devs appear only in English. Such as this discussion, in fact. I don’t have a perfect solution for that, but please be sure that I do respect our non-EN community and will endeavour to see that they are served as well as possible, whenever possible.

HenleyLegoMan — that would be ideal. It would require coordination, of course, but it would ease the challenge of making sure our non-English community is well served. Definitely something I want to talk about in the new year.

Qugi — the topic was covered on December 4th here. Yes, there was more and more specific discussion yesterday on Reddit, but the general topic was covered here, first, nearly three weeks ago.

Here’s the quote:

  • Fix issues that encourage toxic play or interactions. No collectible should be gated behind failed events, or mechanics that make you upset that another player is playing a specific way. Unfortunately these things take longer to fix and test around the fixes (don’t want to break something else on accident), so the turn around will be slower

I’m sorry if you don’t understand, but let’s just agree that we see this one differently.

I think this discussion has run its course. I hope that the information I have provided is helpful to you and that you have greater insight into how things operate in relation to forum communication.

First let me clear up a few mis-impressions:

No one goes through a review or an approval process in order to post here. No one. I think I recall that years ago a team member mentioned something about approvals, but I do not know what that was about. I can say, though, that as the lead of the forums team today (for the last 15 months) we don’t review or approve posts.

What we are sometimes asked to do it post on behalf of a team. You’ve probably seen me do that recently about game changes, a WvW Sneak Peek, etc.

Sometimes we’re asked to read through a post to see if it makes sense, if it answers the questions, if there are other items that could be included.

Sometimes, someone asks me to give a “word smith” review. (I was a professional editor long before I joined Anet. Editing is something I like to do, and a help I can offer my fellow team members.) This doesn’t involve approval, this simply involves clarity.

Posts can be made where the ArenaNet team member is comfortable posting. No one is required to post. No one is forbidden from posting. I agree with you that sometimes there is info “out there” that I’d like to see on the official forums. In cases where I’m aware of it, I’ll ask the dev if he/she could also post here, or if we could synopsize the external post to share it here. I think it works, for the most part: the team member can post wherever he/she wishes, and we’ll do our best to share info here. (In the case of the concerns in the OP, I agree with Baconomics that we did cover the topic here, and I think we did that even before it was present on reddit.)

It’s true that each forum can have heated moments. Heck, I had a neutral info post buried once. It’s wasn’t personal, and I bear no scars. The fact is, members didn’t like the message and used down votes to “shoot the messenger.” (It was sort of a shame because then the info wasn’t known, which was the whole point of posting, but ah well.)

We don’t have up and down voting here, but people speak their minds, and sometimes that becomes over the top. We want to use moderation in the true sense — in a moderate sense — so we’re not likely to smite every single negative post, and I’m sure you know that. Getting more harsh here to encourage devs to post here is an interesting idea, but I’m not certain it’s good for the community as a whole, nor for the forum atmosphere in general.

ArenaNet doesn’t want to adopt a “post here and only here” approach to communications. I hope you’ll understand and support the inclusiveness of our communicating as being more important than the medium on which something is said.

Edit: Fixing italics.

Hi everyone,

We’ve made improvements by streamlining our Content Terms of Use and list of APIs. You can now find our updated Content Terms of Use that covers use of our APIs on our website at: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-content-terms-of-use/, our updated Website Terms of Use at: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/website-terms-of-use/, and a full list of our APIs available on the official Guild Wars 2 wiki at: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/API:Main

The do’s and don’t’s of using the Guild Wars 2 APIs are in one place and easier to understand. We haven’t changed how we’ve been working together, but we have made it clear that you may include the Guild Wars 2 APIs in applications that are sold or contain in app purchases as long as these in compliance with the Content Terms of Use and Website Terms of Use and are not in competition with us.

Thanks.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to ask in my first post: I’ve asked you a few weeks ago about the Character-ID in the games-api. There is only the profession listed, but if someone has more than 1 character of this profession. Beside this, I’ve asked for team-roster (both sides, with professions they played). Is this still on your list Lawton? That would be awesome

Yeah it is; the roster information isn’t current stored by the matchmaking server, so it’s gonna take some work to plumb all that data through. It’s definitely on the list though.

Greetings and ahead of the upcoming holidays: merry christmas!
Chris

Thanks, you too!

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue that caused too much supply to drop for minor supply drops.
  • Fixed an issue in which NPCs with set patrol paths would no longer move or respond to players. Lionguards, Seraph, dolyaks, and guild bounty targets will now resume their patrols and respond to players.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented magnetite shards from being correctly awarded for failed boss attempts in the Forsaken Thicket.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed multiple instances of Foxglove to be collected.
  • Fixed an issue in which schematics in a guild’s aetheric assembly device did not have a tooltip informing users of how long a schematic would take to process. Schematic tooltips will now report how long they take to process in the aetheric assembly device.
  • Fixed an issue in which guilds could not swap decorations with the decoration UI opened by using skill 6 on the skill bar.
  • Fixed an issue in which guilds could not always queue schematics into their aetheric assembly device in the guild hall workshop. Guild members with the appropriate permissions can now queue schematics in the aetheric assembly device.
  • Fixed an issue in which guilds with more than 40 schematics in their aetheric assembly device could not scroll through the recipes. A scroll bar now appears if the aetheric assembly device has more than 40 schematics in its inventory.
  • Updated the description for creating the Mini Munificent Gift Skritt in the Mystic Forge to correctly call out Wintersday Gifts in the recipe.

On an unrelated note, how goes the unbitrotting of the rest of the guild API? Any ETA?

Eh, ran into some minor technical issues with exposing the event log but everything else is coming along. Not planning on releasing anything else this year (this is the last week before our holiday break), but I’m hoping to turn on the treasury and stash bits sometime in January.

This would be wonderful to see. I would also like to see player ranks before the match and I would like to know the system’s estimated percentage chance of my team winning, the number of points I need to get a pip, and all other information of that ilk in the details tab. I hate guessing as to why I lost a pip or won a pip.

To be entirely clear; I’m not changing anything in-game, just adding additional data to the public API. I’ll ask about exposing the matchmaker’s predictions but I’m not certain that’s something I can expose (since we’re not exposing MMR values, I’d assume we wouldn’t expose a value that would you to derive your raw MMR).
