Play versatility and dps meter's

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Angelweave.1856

Angelweave.1856

With the introduction of dps meter’s it is apparent that player versatility is narrowing, i.e. if you see a thief running dual pistols you immediately know they bring little to the table whatever game mode they are playing (pve/wvw/pvp).

I personally like dps meters though the gap between meta and “play the way you like” is a substantially large gap (not because people run nomads vs berserkers) it is simply that some weapon sets perform subpar.

In a perfect world I would like to see that, head to head each weapon set and weapon combination is viable either due to direct damage output, additional utility, cc, etc…

I think you are missing the significant limitations that are at play here.

If anet marketed pvp with “Play pvp we will put you in games where you are expected to lose but we will not penalize you for losing because the matchup was never fair.” People would say “Hummm this doesn’t sound too good.”

Yet this is exactly what is happening right now.

I think the core issue is there are significant limitations and anet are trying their best to figure out a way to make pvp fun.

Angelweave.1856

The way I look at it;

1. There are 21 different armour statistic types
2. There are 71 different runes to augment that armour

There should be an effective/useful/wanted “meta” (though not needed) that corresponds to each armour statistic type and rune augmentation.

If game design does not allow those different “meta” to evolve, then create the ability for those different “meta” to evolve or remove the armour type (just like magic find armour was removed).

Angelweave.1856

I would like to know, what is happening.

Firstly here are my base theories

1. If the point difference of a ranked match s greater than 100 it is either a bad match up or a team made a bad decision

2. If the point difference is greater than 200 then most of the time it is a match up issue not player skill, I say this because for me a score of 300-500 would be expected when it’s 4v5.

Having played 1,340 ranked games and winning 630, I’m not the best player but I can hold my own in most situations and have enough experience to look back at a game and say, “that’s where it was lost”.

My last 15 games have been very frustrating, below are the scores;

Them My Team
500 – 204
500 – 191
500 – 264
503 – 77
500 – 154
501 – 304
458 – 500
401 – 501
504 – 494
500 – 231
500 – 300
423 – 500
500 – 314
504 – 220
451 – 501

So what do you think, am I bearing a run of bad matchups or is this a l2p issue?

I’m pretty sure there is a bug/corrupt file in my download of GW2.

I have a AMD FX-8150 Eight Core, 8.0GB Ram, AMD Radeon HD 7900, with 30gig free space on my SSD drive.

It started about 3 weeks ago where my frames per second dropped to average around 7fps.

What I have done; formatted my drive and re-installed (I run win 7, 64bit), unparked CPU’s, changed power options to 100%, installed a new fan, dusted down the computer, updated all drivers, I’ve even tried running the game through Razer Cortex to ensure I have nothing in the background.

When I run GW2 I can’t even browse on the internet or type a word document. The moment I exit GW2 my computer comes back to normal speed, which is pretty fast.

I’m happy to download a diagnostic program, run whatever tests you want… I just want a decent frame rate so I can play the game.

Cheers for your help

So what happened? The computer flew until I turned on GW2 then even browsing went to custard, turn off GW2 and everything fires back up to warp speed…

Though ok, maybe I’m just plain stupid and can’t get this right so I’ll play the game through razor, where I average 25 FPS.

Game is playable but seriously for a setup like this I should have everything on max and have 60 FPS.

Why look at Win/Loss ?

in PvP

Posted by: Angelweave.1856

Angelweave.1856

I believe win/loss percentage should reflect a standard bell curve and the outliers should then going into a separate tier.

This makes for more even matched games, which to most people are more entertaining/fun.

Just like sports teams, you have different grades. No one wants to watch an A grade team demolish a C grade team, which is why you don’t see it on primetime TV. It’s not entertaining.

The current system of players having massive win/loss streaks means it’s not entertaining/fun for either the winners or losers.

Would it be fair to say the majority of the player base are the same and are not that interested in their position on the leaderboard?

Which would then mean that have a 70% chance to win or lose a game isn’t what people are after?

Leagues in PVP leaderboards

I tend to side with the OP, though only cause I think it offers a valid solution.

To me the reason for leagues/rank brackets is that being put against people who are close to your level. I think the leagues would need to be fluid say changing weekly or something like that.

The core issue I see is that matches are not always close, nothing beats the feeling of winning by 5 points… and when you lose by 5 points you can genuinely say gg

I wouldn’t suggest having different rewards, just like the leader board there is no reward for being #1 other than saying I’m the best.

Solo PvP Options

in PvP

Angelweave.1856

Heya guys I’ve got some ideas to help improve to solo arena PvP

1. The time taken to form a 5 person group can be up to 10 minutes (granted I play off peak)
Options to fix this
a) Have 3 v 3 teams
b) Give better rewards i.e. faster track progression so that more people do it

2. Getting duds on the team, which can be legitimate like people testing builds, but it can just be people who plain suck.
Options to fix this
a) Match up people according to their percentage of win stats i.e. 0%-10% wins is one band etc. How it would work if you have a 80% win rate on a thief and a 15% win rate on a ranger and you queue with a ranger you go into the 10%-20% queue. If you play with your thief then you go into the 80%-90% queue.

I agree with the OP.

I would like GW2 to evolve to be more unique and I think the living story is a fantastic vehicle to try new things.

I personally don’t care what route anet take on that uniqueness and I don’t care if they fail hard. If anet decide to use the living story to experiment it’s only a small part of the game that sucks and only for a short period of time.

There are heaps of really good suggestions on how to do this all over the forums and I’m sure the developers have their own ideas as well.

For me the take home is that GW2 fan base love this game and want to see it get better… as a developer that must feel pretty dam good.

Why is zerging so encouraged in this game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Angelweave.1856

Angelweave.1856

The core issue i hear is not the number of people, but standing still pressing 1 = win.

Events need to require skill again… bosses send out ground targeting aoe and also blockable/dodgeable aoe but boss aoe works like Piercing Arrows so the whole zerg feels it, immobilize people for 30 seconds who dps through the wrong phase (kinda like Lyssa only more punishing), put reflect back on bosses so people can spike themselves to death, have bosses spread mass aoe conditions, rase the condition cap on bosses and/or make player applied conditions last 1/12 of what they normally do but cause 12 times more damage (so conditions are still viable but a zerg can use their condition builds), remove the blinding ball of light so that you can see boss mechanics, boss range is 0-2000 on all attacks so range or melee you gotta watch, blah blah blah…

It’s not the zerg that’s the problem it is making all fights a dps check instead of a dodge, heal, armor, vitality, timing and ultimately skill check.

For those who are still struggling with this… basically the idea is have a boss fight where the boss self destructs (aka dies) regardless of the dps, the reward is for those who stay alive inside a set area. This extreme would be boring I think but adding such elements into a boss fight to make them less zergy and more interesting.

World Boss Rotation and Megaserver

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Angelweave.1856

Maybe there could be 2 world bosses at the same time, one minor boss and one major boss (it would also help reduce the zerg size). This way temples and all the other world events could be easily added into the mix and major events would spawn a lot more frequently.

I know for myself I have played since the patch and since I generally play the same times, I get the same bosses.

I understand “prime time” but if all bosses popped more frequently and 2 events occurred at the same time we might have a rotating schedule that repeats itself say 3hrs.

World Boss Rotation and Megaserver

Angelweave.1856

After people’s thoughts on the topic…

First up what I love about the new bosses on timers;
1. I know when they are up
2. I now get a chance to participate in the warm up events
3. There are heaps of people so it feels like a “world” event
4. I can see anet are already working to counter the zerg fest, and can’t wait till that gets fixed properly

Things I think could be improved
1. The rotation seems to favour the minor events which pop all the time
2. Temples now with the mega server they always look closed but when you port in they are always open, either fix that or maybe put temples in the world boss rotation??

in Profession Balance

Angelweave.1856

I personally would like to see more diversity of builds in the game but to do that I think things need to be a lot more equal.

For example if you give up 10% of attribute ‘a’ then you gain 10% of attribute ‘b’
Let’s assume
1. Player one – gave up 10% health for an increase of 10% damage
2. Player two – gave up 10% damage for an increase of 10% health

For build diversity to work, if both players were put head to head they would both die at the same time.

The issue we have in GW2 now is that the loss in damage under the current system is not compensated equally in a practical normal game play application by the gaining of other attributes; therefore you will not get the build diversity you want.

To add to this nothing should be truly equal otherwise there is no evolution (see perfect imbalance).

Things I like, possible improvements

in Living World

Posted by: Angelweave.1856

Angelweave.1856

It’s probably been said before but oh well…

There are a number of things I like about the living story;

1. The new characters (granted the back story/introduction isn’t always there but it’s part of the mystery it makes Tyria feel bigger than all the characters we already know)

2. The length, I like how in 5-6 days you can realistically complete the achievement even if you only have a little bit of time to play, it means time poor players are not spending all their time on the story

3. I like the multiple pathways to complete the overall achievement, I personally don’t like seek out/go find or repetitive quests (others probably do) but I can still complete the achievements by doing the things I enjoy… I don’t have to do everything and I still get a sense of completion
There are more things I like but 3 will do

Things I think could be improved

1. Time gated events become part of your story and use phasing technology to affect the world. For example if you complete your living story about the jungle worms then when you enter the areas of the zone where they spawn on your map they spawn… if you haven’t completed that part of your personal story then you don’t see them spawn. (it not new technology and it used quite a bit to make your decisions/story feel like it has a true impact on the world in other games.

2. Make the living story leave permanent changes, use it to rebalance zones, fill in empty areas, re-align events so they flow rather than be just timer driven, add in zone meta events, etc. Make the world more alive. I’m ready for the next level in dynamic events were events have towns being created and destroyed (not waypoints, that’s just god awful), events flow across and around a map leading to a final boss fight.

Overall I want to see the living story leaving behind a changed more dynamic, more interactive, more full Tyria.

New World Bosses

I like the idea of the new world bosses and I have some suggestions to improve them.

Bosses/Champs use a lot of ground targeting aoe, why can’t they target 60% of players individually (put a red circle at the players feet so they know they are targeted).

Change some of the dynamics from just doge to using line of sight – like a homing missile. Players have say 5 seconds to break line of sight, which could be used to move players to desired areas.

I would like to see lower scaling options, if there are only 25 people in a map why can’t they have a fair chance of taking down the boss as well.

Agree 100% with what you are saying, we need more variety in choice (I still think people who like fishnets need to be catered for as well). The cultural armor issue aside (which anet will get flamed over), reskinning an existing armor is in my opinion not in the top 10 the best ways to expand armor variety in the game.

Living Story
I didn’t think it was ever a story… if it was I could never follow it. I thought it was just the dev’s filling in/fleshing out areas of the game. So I’m not disappointed with it. I would like to see the filling in/fleshing out expand a bit more and shift away from getting people to one zone/area for 2 weeks, later leaving the zone dead and hard for new players who are trying to solo/level in that area 3 months later… there is a whole world out there make it all re-interesting.

variety to the end game

in Suggestions

Posted by: Angelweave.1856

Angelweave.1856

I find the variety of things to do after you have setup your character/s falls away, though I believe there is enough in the game to easily remedy this.

Allow previously onetime events to be repeated (say once per month or something like that), the reason for time gating is to stop people chain repeating the same location. The goal is to give players a reason to re-explore all areas of Tryia expanding the “end game options”.

Things that could be repeated are; Hearts, Skill Points, Vista’s and Personal Story.
The rewards for subsequent completion would need to be enough to encourage people to re-explore Tyria especially in the lower level areas.

One of the other things I really enjoyed about GW1 was hard mode and timers on missions/dungeons, which could also be used to add more “end game” variety.

For hard mode, instead of buffing monsters why not further down scale the player another few levels. In the open world this could create problems but if the “hit to tag” was significantly increased only for hard mode players, 3rd party healing/buffs were also reduced when in hard mode and other such minor tweaks the hard mode player not will not overly benefit from those playing normal mode in the open world. For instanced areas; like re-doing your personal story and dungeons hard mode is a lot easier because everyone in the party enters at the reduced level.

Timers were also great thing in GW1, not only does it allow time poor players to complete something without fear of it dragging out it, the added benefit is creating variety to existing content. For example put a speed timer on dungeons. If you finish it under the timer you get an additional speed clear reward, if you take too long then your party wipes or they could still complete but just get the normal reward.

This can also open up a whole new range of achievements essentially doubling the size of the game.
