This game is just becoming a “prettier” hybrid of other already established games. It really is a shame because ANet had a vision that actually was different from most other games out there, but that vision is gone. It simply wasn’t a sustainable business model, otherwise it wouldn’t have been changed.

The AMA answered the only question I had right off the bat. This game’s direction has shifted. You cannot appease both groups of people (vertical and horizontal). They are ideas in direct opposition of one another. Good luck moving forward ANet. Hopefully you are more steadfast in your decisions moving forward, or you will risk losing even more players.

Hardcore players, what are you doing?

Animus.6073

Okay, any hardcore players around willing to suggest great games that you would leave gw2 for?

That is the biggest issue for me right now. I would say that I am between dedicated and hardcore, but I find that there really is no MMORPG available right now that I enjoy. I played WoW for 7 years and grew tired of it. I played Rift for about 3 months before deciding it wasn’t for me. I thought Guild Wars 2 would fill the gap for me, but it really hasn’t. I’ll admit, it has been a nice placeholder for me while I wait for something else that I really take to.

I haven’t played since the mini expansion and I’m not sure I will, but who knows. In the meantime, I’m keeping myself busy with DOTA 2, which is absolutely awesome if you like MOBA style games. It isn’t an MMORPG but it is fun and addictive.

Like I said, I have no hard evidence to support the theory, but neither does the person you are quoting. How do you know his or her group was playing properly? Was he or she playing properly? Was the event bugged? All I can attest to is that while event farming in Orr, I have seen a noticeable difference in “tagging” ability based on whether or not I was part of a group, with no change to my play.

I believe that each group is treated as an entity, like each individual player who is not grouped, when being evaluated for loot/xp credibility. However, if players in a group do not contribute, they do not get included in the group’s credibility. I know that I am not incorrect in stating that group play increases your chances of “tagging” mobs, that much is confirmed in my mind. Anything beyond that is speculation, unless someone has a definitive answer.

Your group’s damage is factored into the kill in addition to your contribution. So if everyone else is grouped up and you are alone, it means that your damage potential is essentially 1/5th of everyone else’s. That probably doesn’t account for everything but that would be my best guess as to what you are experiencing.

Do you have any proof of this? Guesses are fine, it’s just it would be nice to see something official backing this up.

You can join a group with a friend, have him kill something while you stand there (even if you’re healing/buffing him), and you won’t get kill credit.

In fact, I often do my dailies with a friend and they will not get credit for a kill if they don’t do enough damage to the mob (which happens often if I do most of the damage before the get in range and hit it). In such a scenario they ARE doing damage to the mob that their party member is kiling, yet still not receiving credit because they aren’t doing enough. This often leads to me completing the kill task portion of the daily well before them, despite the fact that we are hunting together.

I don’t have any hard evidence, just some anecdotal evidence. I know it doesn’t matter whether or not you are grouped if you stand there doing nothing and your party does all the work; you will not receive loot in that fashion. However, the threshold of damage you need to output decreases based on your party status (and may be impacted by the number of people in your party). I have no numbers or percentages I can give you but this is what I have noticed.

Yes it should. People are now getting turned down from group for not having full exotic gear.

This is the sort of mentality that is killing online gaming. Getting full exotics is about as difficult as installing GW2. If getting a full set actually required time and dedication, that would be a different story. Even then I wouldn’t see it as a problem.

I don’t see it as a lie because that implies they already knew they were going to add a new tier when the manifesto was published. It’s more like partly changing their mind along the way based on findings with the live game. Probably if they would’ve had certain data / feedback or had already started developing the new content in time for launch, then ascended gear would’ve been in at launch.
If applying the same logic folks now use to call them liars to RL, this means that every time you change your opinion on something you have been lying about it prior to that.
It’s part of development to change things along the way while still trying to hold to your design philosophies and although it’s on the border of it for me the manifesto still holds true for now.
Almost every other MMO I’ve played I’ve seen less rage about more obvious empty promises or changing to something priorly stated would never be done.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand the concerns of folks but I think too many are overreacting. Especially the childish threats of ragequits before the patch is even live and feeling entitled for refunds etc.

We don’t speak about changing opinion we speak about breaking moral contract with thousands customers for no proper purpose.
They always planned to release new content periodicaly and they always swear not to add superior gears.
That’s it.

What makes you think they don’t have a “proper purpose”? What if this game were out for 2 years and they release a tier that was slightly more powerful than exotic. Would you throw a conniption fit even after 2 years because they promised you there would be no treadmill?

It will take people no more than a week, if not less, to get this gear. There is no raiding, there is no serious time commitment, there is no treadmill. It is just a stepping stone to acquiring legendary gear so that the gap between exotic and legendary isn’t quite as large as it was originally intended to be. Get over it already.

I’m not a content locust, but I love them. I love that they are willing to number crunch and theorycraft so that the rest of us who don’t have as much time can use their examples to progress and build proficiently. They are no less entitled to play games the way they want to play than anyone else. The only way to kill off these types of players is to produce overly simplistic content. That isn’t good for anyone.

On that note, and this may be even more crucial, do not include prolonged aspects of underwater combat in the new dungeons. This is, of course, unless you plan to overhaul how underwater combat works.

The teaser was pretty awesome, but those drills and underwater shots are cause for a bit of trepidation.

Why should you not believe them when they say that it is the “final” tier? More importantly, why do you ask that question when they never said that? They only say they will not release new tiers of sets every three months (because that is what a lot of those paranoia people whined about). They did not explicitly say that there will never be any other tiers than the existing ones, and they also did not say that there would be.

Because I’m not born yesterday and don’t expect somebody to honor a new promise when they already broke an old one?

Sustainable business model will trump creative innovation every time. ANet’s stance on gear is obviously not as concrete as they had their consumers believe pre-launch. This update isn’t any reason to lose your head, but certainly take what they say with a grain of salt.

The overwhelming majority of people who post on forums for big games like D3 and GW2 are extremely volatile. When things disappoint those people, there is an outcry. D3 has been a chain of one big failure after the next. I think a lot of GW2 fans are concerned that this game is heading down that path.

I would wait to see what happens with this pseudo expansion pack before taking up the pitchforks, personally.

Guys, just a small clarification: it is “grief” or “griefing”, not “grieve” and “grieving”. I know it isn’t a big deal but they mean very different things. Grief is not a verb in the English language but in the MMO setting it means harassing other players through verbal or in game abuse. Grieve is a verb meaning to mourn or be sorrowful. Grieving, likewise, indicates the action of a person who is mourning or is in a current state of sorrow.

That being said (sorry, English Major bad habit), I agree that this sort of behavior is very bad form. The pseudo-anonymity that MMO’s create for players lets them act in ways they would be ashamed to act in real life. It is the mark of a very small person.

I always hated this system. Today I did 2,5 hours of shelter/penitent farm. Not because I like it, I rly hate it. I do it because if you want to farm money in this game, you have to do some group-based zerg farm. It’s so far more effective that you’re really slowing yourself down if you choose to go solo farming in some nice spot far away from the zergs.

Imo the current mechanics therefore suck, and I honestly wish they’d make drop rates unaffected by group status.

Drop rates are not affected by group status as far as I know. The reason it seems that way is because you kill many more mobs while in a group than not in one. The issue I believe the OP is experiencing is simply the “tagging” mechanic which, I agree, needs some tweaking to account for more support oriented players, as well as professions that don’t do massive AoE damage.

Hey everyone, was just browsing some of the other profession sub forums and the Necromancers and Mesmers have come up with a pretty fun game. Basically just post a quote that you are likely to never hear come from a Guardian or about a Guardian.

For example: “I totally just two-shot that Thief from 1200 range with my sick new rifle. Thanks ANet!”

Or: “It is so rewarding trapping an enemy in my Ring of Warding, knowing they have absolutely no way to get out of it!”

Anywho…hope you guys can have some fun with this.

Animus.6073

I could be wrong but I believe it has to do with the “tagging” mechanic in GW2. If it functions the way I believe it does, you will notice that when not in a group, some of the mobs you thought you tagged didn’t grant experience on death either, because you didn’t do enough damage before the enemy was killed. I believe that in a group, some of the damage that your group members contribute to a kill goes to your tally as well, thus successfully granting you the “tag”.

In this instance you should receive experience for the killed mob as well as the same chance to loot it as if you were not in a party and killed something that you “tagged”. Hope that wasn’t too confusing, and again, not completely sure that this is how it works.

I have to assume that each trait adds for a total of 20% damage against enemies who are burning. Since they are worded as “enemies who are burning/suffering from a condition take an extra 10% damage” it implies to me that the extra 10% is based off of your regular damage, before modifiers are applied. I am just speculating, though. If someone has an official answer, I would like to know for certain.

I flat out dislike the trait system. All of it...

I agree. I feel like, more often than not, the minor traits you are forced to take do not have any synergy with the build you are attempting to make. Couple that with the fact that many major traits belong in different trait lines and the whole system just feels off. I hope that this will be addressed in an upcoming profession tweaking patch, whenever that will be.

Animus.6073

LOL at how ignorant so many players are.

I rolling on the floor just thinking about people blaming a game for frying cards and laptops.

Unless you’re using a actual toaster GW2 is not killing hardware.

It isn’t really that GW2 is killing hardware, it is that hardware is dying while it happens to be playing GW2. In reality, it probably would have given out on just about any game if it was bound to crash sooner or later.

As for my GTX690 frying while playing GW2, I’m much more inclined to believe it was a problem with my cooling systems rather than GW2’s “demand” on my rig. After I got my card replaced it still seems to be reaching around 75 degrees even with Vsync on. If I turn off Vsync the temp climbs well over 80 and I have to turn on Vsync again to prevent any future damages to the card. If anyone else is experiencing this problem they should probably contact their manufacturer or responsible party to get their system checked out. I am having a dell rep take a look at my system soon.

Since Aegis will block the attack that would have caused the burning, the burning is never applied. Subsequent burning would continue to strip boons once the Aegis was removed, though.

Hammer has a circle wall, a gap closer, a knockback, and a snare. A greatsword has a mobile AOE, an AOE snare and pull, albeit an unreliable one, and a gap closer. A sword has a blink, a scepter has a single target snare. A shield has an AOE knockback. A staff has a knockdown wall. You can pair all these things with projectile reflection/absorption. I’m not quite sure what the issue is. You can prevent ranged damage, you have four gap closers, two snares, one pull, and two walls. That paired with the guardian aesthetic of preventing damage is incredibly powerful already.

Lets break this down.
1. Hammer has a circles wall, that any player can dodge roll through, jump over, teleport through, or us stability and walk through it and /laugh.

2. Hammer has a knockback, that flings the target AWAY FROM you. Even though it knocks them down they havetime to get up and run before you have time to get to them, so this ability really is pointless unless you are knocking someone off the edge.

3. Hammer has an immobilize, not a snare. 2s, the thing is, its casted, slow, and you can jump over it.

4. Hammer has a gap closer? Oh please tell me what that is? Mighty blow is not a gap closer.

5. Staff has a knockdown wall, that they can just run around? Also who uses staff as a secondary it is the most waste of a weapon for guardian unless you are support.

6. Greatsword does have a nice gap closer, but its a on a longer cd that most other classes. It is also only 600 range

7. Greatsword does have a pull, but its ranges is only 600, by the time you try to use it, the [insert other profession] has already gone 900+ range

8. Greatsword does not have an aoe snare

9. 1hand sword flashing blade is nice, 10s cd, but again 600 range.

Our problem that you are not following, is we lack holding power. For a class that is based all around melee only, we have very little in the form of CC on targets.

QFT. The issue is not getting to the target. It is staying on top of it, like any melee class/profession should be able to do.

Guardians have two blinks. One with 600 range and a 10 second cooldown (sword) and one with 1200 range with a 45 second cooldown. No, guardians do not have much CC relative to a warrior, but that’s class mechanics. Warrior is built to be great at CC. However, comparing a guardian to a thief, guardians have plenty of control. In fact, AOE control. I don’t see the need considering a guardian can close an 1800 range gap in an instant, which is even more powerful than the leaps or rushes that a warrior has mind you, and the guardian isn’t built to “chase” things.

They can close the gap but what happens after the gap has been closed? It opens again as soon as the target, unless it is another melee intense build, decides to dodge roll away or teleport or whatever they decide to do.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but do that many classes have more manueverable options as us? The only thing we need really is close the gap and have a speed boon on.

Close gap with JI with speed boon.
Guy doesn’t have speed boon. Win.

Close gap with JI with speed boon.
Guy has speed boon->doesn’t matter cause we are at the same speed and I can touch him. Win. (Winning meaning, actually knowing how to fight and win in close combat)

Close the gap with JI with speed boon.
Guy does some teleport.
Close gap with leap of faith. Win.

Close the gap with JI with speed boon.
Guy does some telport.
Close gap with leap of faith.
Guy does another teleport.
Close gap with sword #2. Win.

Close the gap with JI with speed boon.
Guy does some teleport.
Close the gap with leap of faith.
Guy does some teleport.
Close gap with sword #2.
Guy does some teleport.
Bind blade him and pull him back. Win.

Now if he can teleport away after all that WITH speed boon. Then yes, idk what you can do then. we need lower cds or whatnot, but I’ve never had that happen.

All of those situations can and do happen. However, I don’t see any situation you listed where the opponent snares/stuns/slows/knockbacks/knockdowns/blinds. Every profession has access to at least half of these abilities and in WvW or sPvP, you will not find people that don’t take these abilities and use them as escape mechanisms as much as offensive mechanisms. Add the natural dodge roll and blinks/teleports/repositions on top of any of that CC and your target will leave you in the dust.

Yes I did forget to ask where you are playing. I always get beat down by the boss that downed me unless I do something to actively lose agro like I can do on my thief. I’d love to start playing in area’s where I do get to rez myself before getting downed.

You are now confusing the argument and yourself. You are talking about a group, not solo play. Your team picks you up, you do not get up on your own. It happens in just about every single boss encounter in this game if you get downed. If you are dying after getting downed in a boss fight, it is either a wipe or your team is playing rather poorly, or both now that i think about it.

For the sake of promoting balance and preserving roles, RPGs require that you suspend your disbelief a little bit. Even in GW2, any boss you fight has a sporadic “aggro table.” A boss downs someone and then runs off to hit someone else while teammates pick the downed person back up. That doesn’t sound too realistic to me. The boss would down them and pummel them into the ground. If you are willing to suspend your disbelief for GW2, then why not for other MMORPGs. Reeks of bias in my opinion.

So I have a taunt skill that encourages a monster to pay attention to me, or I have binding blades that forces the monster to stay near me even though it may not want to pay attention to me. You are dam right this reeks of bias, I am biased the towards system that makes more sense to me and perhaps spent a bit more time ‘filling in the gaps.’ Rather than telling me to just imagine that skill X pulled the monsters to you, it actually does.

Now I’ll fully admit at this point that this type of CC is now working right. Standard groups of monsters are too easily run over by multiple players thus I don’t need to tactically use CC. Then it doesn’t work on Bosses. I truly hope they do something about this…

Death Knight Death Grip? Don’t know if you played WoW or not, but just in case you didn’t, this ability literally pulled a monster to you and served as a taunt. I see you also completely ignored my reference to aggro tables and bosses not pounding downed characters until they were good and dead. You reek even more of bias now than I originally presumed.

In the sense of what it means to actually play an RPG, the traditional models actually support gear trumping skill if the margins are large enough. If you look at it from an RPG or Role Playing Game stand point (I emphasize only to remind people what the meaning of the abbreviation is) the hero/character/player who is the “oldest” (most time played) is the likeliest candidate to beat the newcomers. Not always the case, but in most cases it is true.

What? RP (role playing) is acting out a character. It has absolutely nothing to do with levels or the amount of time spent playing a character. Making it a game involves scenarios to solve, etc. Toss in 100+ people and it’s massively multiplayer. Do that online and bam, you have a MMORPG. Notice that nowhere does that imply that you’ll loot, level or anything of the sort? Hell, it would be an MMORPG about ants in an ant hill and it would still apply. Not sure how awesome gathering crap for the mound would be… over and over doing the same gathering quest.

Semantics are not arguments. If you split hairs like that, it is obvious that I cannot agree or refute your claims. An established meta has become prevalent in the RPG genre. That meta defines the genre. GW2 goes outside of that meta to an extent. Like I said, nothing is wrong with that, but it cannot be passed off as the exact same type of game. A sub-genre would be more accurate. Horizontal or Vertical MMORPG, if you will.

By those same RPG standards the enemies you fight are stupid enough to go after the guy who they can’t kill. They completely ignore the guys they can kill and are doing more damage. They are also stupid enough to fall for a taunt, which will supposedly enrage them enough to attack the guy who actually damages them when they hit him. This is another thing GW ‘fixed.’

I don’t consider the fact that a game has inherent stupidity a good quality of an RPG. Just because old games did it that way doesn’t mean we need to continue. We can all strap on the same armor and weapons and whoever is better or luckier that day will be the winner. That’s more in line of the RPG I want to play.

Another common fallacy is that hitting “taunt” in an RPG literally means that if you were that character, you would be taunting the enemy and making them blind to the real dangers posed to them. There has to be a little suspension of disbelief. Your character is not literally flipping the monster the bird and then holding its attention. The tank is grabbing the attention of the monster by forceful means, even if not through the highest damage. Even though you know that your teammates do more damage than you do, would the monster inherently know that? Maybe in some cases, but definitely not all. A well placed blow to the head from a mace would certainly do more damage than a glancing blow from a greatsword.

For the sake of promoting balance and preserving roles, RPGs require that you suspend your disbelief a little bit. Even in GW2, any boss you fight has a sporadic “aggro table.” A boss downs someone and then runs off to hit someone else while teammates pick the downed person back up. If meaningful character progression means getting better gear so I don’t need to be skillful to beat other players then good riddance to ‘progression.’ GW has a set model where you get a level playing field (relatively in GW2) and if you want to beat someone else you better actually be better than them, not just have better gear.

While you guys can wonder off to find a game that makes you a stronger player because you have better gear, I’ll stick around here where I can smack down someone who may play longer hours but has little ability to adapt and play well.

That hero, if you will, has spent more time honing his skills and acquiring his gear, and is therefore more seasoned than some newcomer who picks up a sword and shield and happens to be good at fighting. That new guy can still win, and people will be impressed when he does, but he is inherently at a disadvantage.

GW2 is not true to its RPG claiming title by those standards. Nothing wrong with that, but the fact remains that GW2 is much less an RPG than traditional styled games. In those games, gear is very much a reflection of your character progression. Nothing wrong with that either.

It sickens me that people are celebrating a lack meaningful character progression in RPG games for the sake of “fairness” and going as far as calling it “the way of the future.”

In the meantime aka the way of the present, 99 out of 100 online RPG games fizzle out in the first year due to being unsustainable in their content and progression.

I agree to an extent. The traditional RPG meta does not condone the formula that you see in GW2. But as I have said in some other threads and earlier in this thread, I don’t think that is a bad thing. It just means that GW2 isn’t the exact same genre as the other MMORPGs. It is very similar, but the difference between horizontal progression and vertical progression set it apart. For better or for worse is up to the player to decide. Strictly based on the definition and tradition of RPGs, it doesn’t fit, but ANet doesn’t really want it to fit – so there really isn’t a problem. If the player takes issue with the new formula presented in this game, they have the option to take a more traditional approach with other games.

It does not have to be gear based though. That mentality does need to change.

No it doesn’t. The mentality is the reason people like what they like and don’t like what they don’t like. I agree that, if you are making the decision to play GW2, you do need to change your mentality if you believe their should be gear progression. That is just simply not in this game’s meta. It will never be.

However, if people are simply voicing that they don’t like that there is no gear progression once you hit 80 exotics, that is totally valid. It is moot and frivolous, but it is still valid. Those people should simply play other games.

I’d personally just prefer a fix to the broken content, but I would consent to this if that isn’t possible in the near future.

Stop saying GW2 is better or worse than other MMO’s based on the vertical vs. horizontal progression mentality. On that note, stop comparing it based on the holy trinity either being here or not. GW2 is different because of that – not better, not worse.

Some people will like it better than other iterations of the MMO and some will like it worse. I personally prefer apples to oranges. Should all the orange eaters learn that they have been doing it wrong all these years? No. Get over it.

Just because these games are in the same genre (that being the MMORPG) does not mean that every single aspect can be compared as a tangible pro or con. If you crave vertical progression, play another game and get it. If you like the casual pace of horizontal progression, GW2 is just right for you.

I hope no heads explode here….but what if I told you that you could play both?

Welcome to the community and I’m happy you are enjoying your Guardian so far. Your build will most certainly be viable, but you have to gear and trait for it, as you would with any build. That is where it gets a little tricky. You have to decide what you want your main focus to be.

Scepter/Torch + Hammer is essentially all out offense, unless you are relying more on the Hammer with the Altruistic Healing trait. One benefit you will see with your build is that you do not have to stay up close to do your damage. That will inherently give you the ability to take a more offensive approach to your build.

I would put at least 15 points into radiance, or more if you like the trait options in that line. You should take 30 in Valor to grab Altruistic Healing or Monk’s Focus (those really are our best traits, regardless of your setup), depending on what utilities you are running. If you use meditations, go with Monk’s Focus, otherwise pick up Altruistic Healing. You definitely want to pick up some points in Zeal, but how many is definitely up to you. I would also snag 5 points in Virtues if you can spare them (it has amazing synergy with Altruistic Healing if you chose that route).

As far as gear goes, if you are focusing on heavy condition damage from your burning, go for condition damage. If you are focusing more on direct damage, go for a combination of power and precision. Supplement either choice with adequate amounts of vitality and toughness (priority on those two would be toughness). You will get a feeling for what values you need to hit as you run dungeons more and more.

With a build like that you will be set for almost any PvE encounter as long as you play smart. As far as PvP or WvW goes, you would need to change some things up and take a bit more survivability. The Torch doesn’t tend to bring too much to the table in a scenario like that, but for PvE you will do fine with it.

At the end of the day, play what you enjoy and try to make the weapons you love work for you, and not the other way around. Hope this helped. If you need any specifics answered, send me a PM or reply here.

I'm just not happy with this game...

Good write up and definitely addresses many of the problems the player base is experiencing. I’m sure Arena Net is aware of all of them and is working on improving where they came up short. I find that playing this game like a traditional MMORPG tends to force people into this disappointed state. If you play this game in moderation, it is much more fun, seemingly at least.

They are all pretty boring, I will definitely give you that. However, as others have pointed out, Renewed Focus is very very good. It would be nice if one of our elite skills was actually exciting to use.

No it really isn’t because LoL and GW2 are in two completely different genres.

This point is irrelevant to the discussion, that being about balancing combat mechanics.

Your entire rebuttal is moot and beside the point.

You are attempting to compare a MOBA with a MMORPG and you are claiming that my point is irrelevant to the discussion? In a MOBA, there is no such thing as PvE. Any non PvP content simply serves as a test. You are not being compared to other players in that vein.

Anything non-PvP in a MMORPG, or PvE, is completely different. You are compared to your counterparts in everything from efficiency to level of excitement. No MOBA would ever balance their game on any “PvE”, or bot, content. That is simply ridiculous and if you can’t see that your argument really has no place here.
