im quite long time not checking GW2, but lately find some interesting streams and actually find out there is finaly (one year late, but still) solo and team arena.

Just if someone can explain me, why why why? i dont see team names in team arena ladderboards?? whats the point ?
GW2 is teambased game, so i would like to see team names. Is this planned or should i just came back in 2014? when its ready? (sorry for a bit of irony, can´t help myself)

So how to improve that?
Lets start with something easy.. Forest of Niflhel. There are NPC´s http://www.twitch.tv/soacgaming/b/407722149 and in this discussion it was mentioned how during the GW2 launch we had reward 50 points. Thats was not working well and it will not work well right now again. The problem is position of the NPC and the mechanic of the thief.
- Position – because right now where they are – its not something you fight for and something you can plan in advance or defend. Also the fact that you only need 1 person to kill the NPC is just bad. So i would propose to have only 1 NPC that will be located in middle on the map (downstairs of keep) and increase their HP pool so at least 2 persons need to go for kill. Then you can increase the reward to 50 or 60 points and teams will start to fight and defend. Also important is thief mechanic. The problem is “last hit” and Thief is the best one to do that – and from stealth. Thats needs to be tweeked as well.. .

Now lets move fowarad how we can improve.
Remember GW1? one of the most “deeph” mechanic was
- Death Penalty
- Moraleboost
- Flagrunning

This 3 things made some important game changes.
1) Death penalty ment once you died – you had 15% less HP pool after ressurect. This scalled up to 60% so once you reached that level.. it was pretty much easy to eliminate you as thread. This was additional “skill” level and “tactic” present in game.
2) Moraleboost was a great mechanic to negate Death penalty or get additional bonus.
3) Flagrunner defined new strategy options (builds, options etc).

These 3 points are just great additional deepth of the game. I know the game should be accessible for newcomers but hey.. how hard is to understeand to theese mechanics? Look at starcraft 2. You can watch and have fun and you just understadnd the basic. Im playing it almost 1 year and im only platinum league meaning i still have lot of work to improve myself.
In GW2 you reach your maximum potencial in game very soon. and its hard to say.. well.. we need to improve this .. specific part in order to get better.

So i was just thinking what if we have these 3 mechanic in GW2 sPvP? would that work? i think with some tweaks it could work. And it could bring much more to the game and improve the game potencial not only in terms of strategy and therefore for players. but mainly for viewers and commentators. Because then you can do so much more..

so – i dont want to goo deeply on how it can be implemented. Thats not the goal of the topic. But i just want you guys to discuss about options how do you see it and if you think these mechanic can improve game or not.

Hey guys, and Hey ArenaNet (hope someone will read it).

Lately i was watching those tournaments (king of the beta, gw2guru tournament). I have say im glad that people were watching and enjoying streams. For a start is a good starting point. but i also have some comments / feedback if you want.

1) Its a mess. Im not talking about switching and commentators not able to swtich views properly. But in general if you see a team fight (2v2 or 3-3) – its just a mess. I have hard time to recognize whats going on and what a total newcommer or just random vievew of the stream can say? the problem is so many light efects. Every spell has so hudge and visible animation that when you see 2 or 3 at same time – its just a mess.

2) http://www.twitch.tv/soacgaming/b/407722149 – clachs. How to improve this. I think thats very important. Right now we have one or maybe 2 interesting game mechanic. Thats Guild Lord kill on Foefire map. Or tripple cap buff on Temple map. And thats it.

3) Death of the players doesnt matter in long turn. You maybe lose one point, you can have hard times to get it back. But in general. you respawn and just go fight somewhere else with full effectivity. Thats something whats leads to simple builds (burst or tank) and also limit players classess choices.

4) There is not too much you can comment as commentator. Most of the time – you can´t describe any interesting situation. Because there is not that interesting situations. Basically you fight 1v1, 2-2, 3-3 and you get point capped or you die. nothing else.

5) class limits / same builds. There is no diversity because all you need is tank and burst. Nothing in between. No need to create specific builds or for example Necromancers are just not used that much – because they dont fit well as burst or tank. With more goals and strategy in game – more builds and diversity will be needed

6) team cooperation. Right now the biggest cooperation is to spike target or to outnumber someone on point. Thats the only strategy you can use (well there are some others but not as important if you play this part well.. ). In order to improve we need some more different options for team cooperation. combofields just are not enough. Im speaking about timings, fake rush, spliting, stoping flags, getting boost, killing someone who does have death penalty. just add more strategic options..

The point is to have competitive matches. If you are so good that you beat every other solo group. Then yeah you should have at least a reasonable shot at beating the lower tier premades.

So what i understeand we have our “personal” rating. When a group is made (solo or full premade) then this rating is counted and game is searching worthly opponent.

Well.. now imagine the situation Im in and i believe more player do have same.
I play in my team, on top of that i play in other teams and to be honest, i have quite long friend list. So its pretty offten i play with totally different people. Therefore my personal rating is going up and down like crazy depending on my friends i play with. For example with my team i can fight pretty good. But on the other hand, when i play with some of my friends that play mostly PVE – then im going to lose a lot.

Well.. now imagine the situation Im in and i believe more player do have same.
I play in my team, on top of that i play in other teams and to be honest, i have quite long friend list. So its pretty offten i play with totally different people. yea. Basically what i think is that Anet is trying to avoid “smurfing” which become pretty common in GW1. Top teams just made “smurf” guild and played there with other teams. Of course they dont had much challenge.. and so the lower players were stomped fast. That was a team rating.. = smurfing possible
Personal rating = smurfing is not possible, but instead you going to be worried to play with anyone except your own 5 man team.

So there are some + and – in both systems.. and therefore neet to be carefully implemented. Personal rating that dont allow you to play with friends because you then scary of your rank / rating (at this point is same) will hurt the game.

I think you may have misunderstood.

We are not planning on showing your RATING, but you will know exactly where you rank in relation to other players – you will know your rank, but you will not know the actual #. Other games have done something similar.

You will know your “worth” or how “skilled” you are, you just won’t need a # to show it, you will have a placement in relation to other players.

Sorry I didn’t explain it better in the SOTG.

Im still a bit pesimistic about how it will work. This is a team game after all. I have a team of 5 players and .. where is OUR TEAM rank?
Im simply asking because lets say i have more teams i want to play in. Sometimes with my guildmates and we try to be e-sport material so probably i would go to high rank. But then im going to play with my PVE friends.. and possibly lose a lot of games. Which will in fact decrease my invisible rating and therefore move my rank down.
An obvious question is there.. why would i play with my PVE friends then? if that would mean loosing ratings and rank?

And how it affect my real team ? If im loosing with other teams then my main team, then my rating is going down.. meaning also team rating is going down because our summary or average or doesnt matter how is calculated is going to drop. At the end.. MM system will recognize it and it will matchup us with sligtly underpowered teams..

so.. The rating / rank im not really sure a personal rank is the right way.. instead i would like to see guild rank or team rank with some kind of “team registration” so you can have more “ranks and rating positions” similar to SC2 system.
Im pretty sure you know SC2 system – i think thats a good way how to do it..

Im just wondering.. many times i said here and also other players that adjusting of entry fee would make a magic trick even in old 8 teams format.
As we see – adjusting the entry fee is like few minutes of work.. so the question here is obvious

WHY did you let us in old system with 5 tickets without any change and let us not play paids due to their high price?? It was 2 months at least you had all the data of how offten they pop, homany different teams plays etc.. why it wasnt possible ? and instead you keept premades fight in free tournaments stomping pugs??

Played some frees yesterday. When we faced 40+ premades they had the bunker ele. But only one in setup so it was trully annoying but our mesmer + thief were able to handle it fast enough.
In order to kill that ele you trully need to know when he has mistform on CD.. and then time your burst. If you burst only yourself.. its not enough.

Speaking about two eles, well we use two eles as well but offensive speced. Their mobility is just very important in current state. And they are killing Necros pretty fast so its two in one.

Anyway.. i believe the problem is that ele has access to everything.. and thats just bad. But not sure how to balance it out without making ele total obsolete.

Thats all sounds good in theory. Im definitelly going to give it a try.. but i still see the problem in “time”. The time you need for move from one point to another, and the time you need to kill him.

Cheap and Cheesey.. was huge part of GW1 and it will always be a hudge part of any competitive game.. so we just have to adjust.. and learn to play against it..

Hey,

during the weekend i have seen some discussion between Team Paradigm NA and Xeph from EU. It was quite interesting discussion to be honest where they discussed exactly how EU meta is starting to be more and more cheap and cheesy. In fact 2 DD eles is still only part. What Xeph described in that discussion was build that was with 2DD eles, 2 portal mesmers, 1 guard bunker.
Basically you have lot of DPS and survivability. All your DPS is AOE. You have instant taxi between points true mesmers portals. You have 2x illusion of life so if you die.. you technically can´t die.
This team is also extremly survival due to stomps. There is no way you stomp at first try. Only if you manage to kill guardian first.

Well, i think thats going to be. And since i dont play paids lately.. and free are still Necro dominated. I understeand and im pretty much against those DD builds. In fact a good DD or S/D tank can hold your team and its pretty hard to outrun or kill.

if this is new meta.. then i think we are in more trouble .. And thats my personal opinion.. but i dont find it fun at all..

or do you want to wait till maybe Feb / march (date wasn´t confirmed) and see the changes? what if they will not be that good? what if till that time playerbase will be so small that it doesnt make sense anymore?

Actually, what prevents them from doing something “really quick” is that all of these changes require coding that can cause bugs. Remember that temp fix for WvW’s culling issue? Screwed things up even more so they reverted. The only reason that was even attempted is because they don’t have the proper amount of people in-house to test culling fixes themselves.

Another thing to keep in mind is, there is NO sub fee. So there’s no harm in things taking awhile to be fixed because no one is being charged for access to the game. There’s also absolutely nothing preventing players who’ve taken a break from coming back. They just have to launch the client, patch up, and test it out. They like it, they keep playing, they don’t, they stop until the next patch.

I dont think that adjusting entry fee in paid tournaments or any different kind of adjusting will require some “serious” coding. Actually these are numbers in databases and program call them via variables..
And speaking about adjustments there is few options what Anet can do fast in order to try FORCE premades to play against PREMADES and leave solo players in better enviroment where they compette against other solo players.
Yes im speaking free tournaments vs paids. If there is adjustment done, then paids can be pretty much used as premade queue while free is solo queue.

1) decrease entry fee of paids
2) increase free rewards in terms of tickets gains
3) adjust crafting of tournaments tickets so its easier to craft one

The only thing what prevents them to do so is because there are probably some players that spends money for buying tickets.. and if thats the reason then .. well.. then we are in pretty bad position. Altought i dont know who would be that stu-…pid to spend real money for tickets..

Why ArenaNet is not doing something as immediatelly reaction in order to split premades and pug groups. There is so much ideas how to do that in current system and even that without any kind of MM system, that would move the game to the right direction.

Nope, not at all. Random arenas were very popular for people that just started learning the game, and/or didn’t have competitive team.

Making free tournaments solo-que only would solve many problems this game has. Remove hot-join all-together, or just leave 5 vs 5 servers, and try to transfer all your population to actually doing tournaments, and learning how to play. They’d also get some knowledge of tactics, make some friends, learn some tricks and so on, which you just can’t do in hot-join, because it’s all about killing others, doesn’t matter if your team wins or not.

Removing tickets from paids, at least for now, would also make a difference. I find it shameful that you need to either pay with real money to get to play paids, or farm free tourneys, which is disgusting, and no game that called itself competitive has ever been asking for real money, or farming, in order to stay competitive. Remove those tickets, you’ll get a nice amount of money through custom arenas, if you somehow manage to bring your playerbase back.

I fully agree with you. And of top of that – glory gain need to be changed. In fact you should get a glory as a team and every team member should be rewarded equally for its contribution. I mentioned this one earlier – kind of glory pool should be made during the match and every activity just add a glory to this pool, at end of the game – its all glory equally divided between players.
Thats absolutely needed otherwise PUG mentality will always make the game only gloryfarming instead of going to WIN game.

time for this post to be closed. i read on johnathon sharps reply they are putting in a 1 team v 1 team q so looks like they are scrapping tournaments all together.

like i said before im happy either way i actually am more happy now that i know i can do paids whenever i want.

to bad we didnt get a dev reply to this i was actually interested in what they would have said.

They are not going to scrap tournaments.. .. 1v1 will be on top of that with minimum rewards.. not really a good change to be honest..

MM obviously won’t be used in public matches (because people are jumping in/out all the time), and instead will be used in tournament formats.

defeating guardian need time.
If you face a good one, even necro or any condition speced char will need a time. And thats the main issue. You will kill him eventually in 1v1 with = mesmers, necros, rangers, engis. But more or less it will take you several rotation to do so and finally kill him. Even corrupt boon necro will need time for killing the guardian and we talking about 10-15 sec as minimum. Thats the time guardian is allready calling for reinforcments (well he probably did it even before you got to the point and started to attacking). At this point you can expect a friendly staby staby Thief in your back very soon…

So back to our problem How do you counter bunker fast enough? You ignore him! You let him stay in the middle point for eternity keeping him bored as hell and instead you make sure you have capped 2 other points. Its all about capping. If the point is holded by enemy bunker guard, it doesnt make sense to go there in 1v1 situation. Never. If the point is neutralized or its your, then its fine and you can keep there your own bunker to have an endles fight while enemy team is not getting points from it.

We will be using our MM (matchmaking) system to match teams up against one another. Each player has their own rating, and these ratings are used when 2 teams are fighting one another. MM obviously won’t be used in public matches (because people are jumping in/out all the time), and instead will be used in tournament formats.

Thats a big mistake Jonathan. Sorry if you dont see it but there is serveral issues you probably discussed on meetings but let me just tell you what i have in my mind right now when i read it.

1) Personal rankings means that system will try to put together in same team rank 1 and rank 40. Still nothing to prevent this happening.

2) Noone care about personal ratings. This game is team based from start and since relase we dont have fix teams. Guilds means nothing, teams are not recognized as teams but as players. Everytime i go in game play PvP i have 2 choices. I can play with my team if they online or i will setup a random team from my friend list. In second case. At this point there is no way you give me equall opponent as the system will only care about personal rating.

3) We need somehow recognize teams. Even make GUILDS important (like in GW1) or make some kind of team registration (like in Starcraft you can play with different friends 2v2 or 3v3 and have separate ladder and ranking).

In general i also see you still want to keep up tournament system – i dont think that will work.. to be honest ..

so at this point – your post actually means im loosing hopes even more..

You know at first a new player would think that Ele is much harder to play due to the fact that he has twice as many weapon skills as other classes and constantly has to switch attunements.
It’s sadly not the case. It takes a few hours to get used to playing Ele, and when you do, you realize it’s actually the easiest class to play, it just takes more button mashing than other classes. Especially the bunker ones. It literally does NOT matter what your opponent does, just roll through your skills in all attunemets and make sure to save a dodge for when you switch to water so you can heal up with Evasive Arcana.

Yes, Ether Renewal is ONE of the reasons Ele is so strong right now, but it’s far from being the main problem.

Bingo….. rotate your skills and watch the grass grow. You do not need to react to your oponent since you outheal his dmg.
All the reaction you need is stun break.
This is sadly what Anet considers ‘skill’.
The fact is, ppl who are terrible on thief for example can do very well on elementalist. Because they do not need to play against anyone on ele, they can just rotate their skills and once they get that down it is up to their enemy to actually dodge elementalist stuff and put out enough dps to kill them.

Ele is by far the hardest class to play.

Ele is by far one of easy class to play till average level. BUT pretty much harder to master and with skill cap like no other proffesion.

Thats also what should be taken in consideration speaking about eles.. most of them are just average spammers who just benefit from the class – BUT then there is few that are masters and they are trully pain in.. you know where..

ok guys Ele is totaly underpowered and a trully class that can´t be viable in sPvP or in any form (WvW). Because its just not that good and everyone can do better.

what you describe is that other classess have like 2-3 maybe 4 of those abilities. While Ele has them all in one build.
Lets count it

Ranger: condi remove + aoe regen + quickstomp = 3 points
Guardian: Tanky + DPS = 2 points
Thief: condi build + tanky + perma swift + mobility = 4 points
Engi: ressurect, perma swift, self condi removal = 2,5 points (only selfish condi removal)
Warrior: mobility, Elite rez, shout heals, quickstomp = 4 points

now standard D/D ele.
- decent DMG output
- hudge mobility
- CC
- Lots of buff (pernament furry, nice swiftness, protection, regeneration when needed)
- more ways how to healthemselfs (not only skil nr. 6)
- lot of abilities to cleans condition from themselfs and also allies
- Best downed mode in game

= very easily 7 points.

OF course i made it a bit obvious ans some aspect can´t be comparet with others. But you see where im going? All classes have like 2 areas maybe 3 where they are good at and rest is their weaknes. While Ele can spec into all of them and still be usefull. Its the most versatille class.

Im not really calling for nerfs or blaming it. Im just pointing out that this is the reason people find it very good and thats the reason you want them in team instead of other classes. Why would you for example take Warrior when Ele just outshine him ?

one of the reason Ele is strong is that he “CAN” and offten is specced well ballanced.

There is no other class that have
- decent DMG output
- hudge mobility
- CC
- Lots of buff (pernament furry, nice swiftness, protection, regeneration when needed)
- more ways how to healthemselfs (not only skil nr. 6)
- lot of abilities to cleans condition from themselfs and also allies
- Best downed mode in game

So technically you have all and you are decent at it or best. I dont blame eles for that. But its true that sometimes i feel pretty bad when fighting them. If the player know what to do and when to avoid burst.. then its just GG and there is not that much i can do against it.

If you count it.. there is no other class that can be specced like this in whole game. Even Guardians are not that strong as they will be missing mobility or the decent damage, or cleasnsing …

negative side of it? you light armor and going with 14k HP. Well.. thats not an issue if you know how to play it.

I’m having the same problem with just thieves.
I can see they have no aegis/stability and i do not have any blind conditions.
I hit them a few times to make sure there is no blind and then click the knockback ability but sometimes it will not work. I ask some of the thieves if they used blind or had aegis/stability and they said they didn’t have any,so this is really strange.

you need to fraps it and then check in slow motion.. because it can be very fast.

As mentioned, Aegis and some Blinds doesn´t have any casting time animation and therefore can be casted during stomping instead of “precasting”. Ands thats likely the case. I do it with my mesmer so offten. everytime i stomp i just wait when i see my target doing interupts i hit my distorsion and .. stomp is finished..
Its pretty much visible when you are going to be interupted so aegis and blinds can be timed really well..

GW1 PvP was far superior in terms of gamemodes + gvg had a ladder from start till now its still running = http://guildwars.com/competitive/ladder/

lately i started to believe that ArenaNet was under pressure of NcSoft to relase the game. Its the only possible explanation because they know how to do competitive game.. so i dont get how they can serve us something that is like 20% done.. and relase it..

We know there is matchmaking and some update comming in feb/march (who know when)

but its also true the game need fast reaction. I mean even in December was allready late.

PREMADES are fighting in free tournaments. Thats reality. ANd thats the main reason people started to quit sPvP because they are being farmed without chances to improve.

If we do anything to balance out and force PREMADES to play in paid. Then this will most probably happend

1) Best teams will have easier times, they will find themselfs maybe less challenged but in fact we talk about 5-6 teams so its not a big deal and im pretty sure they also will understeand that the game need to split premades and soloplayers as first.

2) Premades will move to paids. Just because they can and they will get better rewards
As a result – free tournaments will probably have longer queue times but they will be almost premades free.

3) now we have Free tournament where solo players will find themselfs able to continue and play. Sometimes they will be of course roflstomped by premade who do like to be “king” but we all know its not that much. Paids will have their queue times drasticly improved. As most of remaining premades will go there.

How to achieve? Just reduce the entry fee for paid tournaments, or increase the ticket rewards in free tournaments (like 1place = 4ticket, 2 place = 3 ticket etc.. )

MAKE PREMADES PLAY IN PAIDS AND PUGS IN FREE TOURNAMENTS.
Do it now – and we will have better times – at least till any update will come (there is a lot of people that can´t wait any longer right now)

Anyway, don’t get your hopes up for january. Colin said in another thread Jan will be rather small. So it’ll be febr/march.

We will be very happy to have something new in feb/march too!
Simply better than nothing have..

but only paid tournaments entry fee reduction would do a magic in our game right now..

I strongly believe we pretty much know what is comming. It was mentioned by Jonathan in few threads and also in first GW2GURU state of the game disscussion.

The main issue here is

When its comming?
and maybe even more important
In what form it is comming? Will Anet try to stay with tournament system? or will we see 1v1 queue? or system that is more like GW1? or something totaly different? Will Anet have enough courage to rewamp their hot-join, free and paid tournaments?

Also one interesting question is
Why the hell any reaction is taking so long? We know since start of PAID tournaments that they are very very limited and they are not really working for premades well.. So why why why? till now nothing (or almost nothing) has ben done in order to move premades from free to paid – and yea, im talking about entry fee here..
As a short term solution going from 5 ticket entry fee to 3 ticket. Or giving as reward for free tournament winn 5 ticket instead of one will have immediatelly simle effect.. and that will be – more PREMADES in paids while less premadess in free tournaments.
Why there has ben nothing done in this?

Inb4 Rangers and Mesmer tourny only.

Actually no Ranger and only two mesmers in whole tournament. And from those two one didnt made it to playoff and second was eliminated early in playoff.

And here we are back. Yesterday we had our third tournament in 1v1 duels. This time with elite skills and this time 18 players were figting. First in groups and later on in playoff where we used double elimination system.

I dont want to get into the who has more numbers and better skills war here.

I just want to say thx to all 3 servers for the best Match up in months.

And eventhough FS and UW are ahead on points it’s RoF that is the only server with + in evolution atm due to the fact we did so bad last week ;o)
In the end it seems we all 3 do great this week, seeing so far noone move up or down atm.

Keep it up and we’ll all fight each other again during next week =)

quickness is too strong. too bursty, too much quickstomps, just sooo soo powerfull.

And yes, its not fun to see haste / frenzy / time wrap that just decided the game.

1 with macro, and 1-2 with mirror image.. i’m ok with the normal combo from blank without macro. How can u ban them? everyone keep saying that they dont use that kind of stuff LOL even the mesmer in my team, and trust me i dont believe him.

Havent played sPvP lately.. but how do mesmers macros their shatter? I mean there is a rotation of skills and some of them are casted so its not like they can do it in second or ?

I skipped a bunch of stuff. But let me say that one of the main arguments is that this will hurt streamers. Do you forget that ALL high level pvp matches were streamed (in a fashion) in GW1? Granted, it wasn’t real time but that is something you will have to make decisions about.

My point is that all top pvp was viewable by the entire player base if they chose to watch it. You had a reasonable idea of what the teams you were likely to face were going to be running. The top teams didn’t win by secret, they won because they knew what they were doing, build-wise, team-wise, strategy-wise. Everything was built to work together and cover as many voids as possible (short of gimmick builds).

Builds were set when you went into a match, you had to adapt within a set of pre-determined conditions to win. And the best did. Right now, you can freely change from one gimmick to another to abuse whatever combination is more op. In the long run, freezing builds like they did will be a better place for GW2 gameplay, especially if there is an esport future.

fully agree with you.

The only difference in this case is that in GW1 we had the choice of 8 skills… while in GW2 we are limited by weapons and only few utility skills and traits.
Even it looks better on paper, reality is that i had much more options in GW1.. but thats a different story..

1. there are many counters to thieves, and if he won 5v1 then i dont think people are doing something right.

Normally im not against Thieves but in WvW they have an upper hand on everyone due to the enviroment.

- lags
- rendering issues
- targeting issues

These 3 reasons are doing insanelly good stealth mechanic more than only OP mechanic. I never believed Thief is an issue and i have killed so many of them.. and so easily. But in sPvP where they dont have so hudge advantage. In WvW i have seen a thief killing one by one in our zerg and noone was able to target him.

Yesterday i played in group with 2 of our friends. He wasn´t able to kill us.. but so we were not able to kill him. Not because of we play badly, but because we simply can´t see him.. can´t target him.. and his first shots are usually from stealth.

So at this point – there are builds in WvW Thief metagame that allow the Thief to go stealth so offten and so easily.. that its not possible to counter him..

Lol man the metagame itself depends on that. And its not just about weapons swaps we are talking about here.

Metagame is like a woman.. its always there, sometimes against you sometimes with you. But well, its true it depends on that, but not that it require it. There will be metagame no matter if there is or isn´t weapon swap.
