Given the toxicity (as opposed to CONSTRUCTIVE criticism) that pervades these forums most of the time I can hardly blame them.
Besides, is it really THAT difficult for people to check into Reddit?
Hell, even some of the best user-created information is there. When I’m researching builds, I almost always end up on Reddit….

You know that the toxicity people talk about, really didn’t exist until we had massive voids in communication stemming from the change in policy right ?

Really? I have played this game since launch, and I well recall that within about a month people started with the self-entitled whining. Don’t misunderstand me, I don’t have an issue with people offering criticism on a product, this is necessary. Moreover, there are things that irk me about the game as well. However, none of that gives people license to be uncivil kitten s.

I admit to being of two minds when it comes to Reddit’s downvote system. On one hand, it does help to filter out a large chunk of the petulant crap, but on the other.. it does indeed have the effect of silencing dissent.

sigh I don’t have a problem with people criticising a product. Hell, it’s not as though I don’t have my own periodic gripes with the game. However, it is possible to express your concerns in a civil and constructive manner. You don’t need to act like this:

I am inclined to agree. The thing is, though, this game tends to go for glamour and glitz where cosmetics are concerned. with an exceedingly strong underlay of animé- everything. My sense is that the player base generally likes this, and it seems to be Anet’s style.
That is all fine and good, these things are always going to be highly subjective, fair enough, but I’d at least like some more choice in terms of hair and everything else related to appearance.

That said, though, I’m of two minds on the subject.. I generally dislike most of the cosmetics available in the Gemstore, which means I can save my purchases for things like character slots and storage space. In a way.. I don’t want to be tempted to spend money on things like hair.

On a related note, while I don’t have any particular issues with all the skimpy female armour, personal choice and all that, I’d really love to see more options that don’t show huge amounts of skin. There are some, but not enough, which is one reason why I like playing Asuras, their armour looks essentially the same on both male and female characters.

Even though I have a decently-sized screen, I’ve been wishing for this myself, because I hate extraneous clutter. I would, eventually, like to try Forsaken Thicket, but I don’t need a constant visual reminder. As to the PvP Leages, ESL and whatever… I simply do not care, and the in-your-face advertising of those events will NOT change that.

They were so worried about “visual noise” when they nerfed skill effects, but apparently they are far less worried about seemingly permanent on-screen noise.
I don’t have an issue with Anet trying to generate revenue; after all, the game is Buy to Play, and they do need to make money. However, if people are not interested in something, they are not interested. This is why I roll my eyes when companies on the Internet complain about Ad Blockers; if people are going to the effort of installing things like that, clearly they are not potential customers.

Ok, I just got it working by running a repair.

Go into your GW2 main folder and create a shortcut of the launcher (I used the 64 bit one). Right click on the shortcut, and select Properties. In the target line, paste exactly as follows:

“E:\GW2\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -repair

After some pausing and hiccups, this will eventually start the repair, and it should successfully patch. I have the game up and running now after doing this.

Please ANET, consider changing the need to Fail events in order for people to acquire precursors and whatever else they require. This completely goes against the premises upon which the game was founded: cooperation between players and playing the game however you want.
Yes, I know there have already been threads on this topic, but I seriously feel this is something ANET needs to address, and soon.
Earlier I landed in Snowden Drifts, saw that an event appeared to be in progress and decided to join in, only to be told to let it fail. I was happily enough to comply, there were no hard feelings, and the general consensus was that ANET is to blame for creating the whole mess. I’m not typically one to slam ANET; overall I feel they have created a unique and amazing game. However, I do think they rather dropped the ball on this one.

It might not be so bad if the name were changed to something like “Flame Spike,” but honestly…that little orange pinprick is NOT a fireball. It even looks out of place when cast by my tiny Asura, which is saying something.

Why Would Anyone Buy Black Lion Keys?

Artemis Noir.3804

Look at it this way… At least the chests actually stack. Prior to returning to GW2 I was playing a game with a similar chest/key system, except those do not stack, which is infinitely more irritating.
Here, I have something like 200 happily sitting in my vault and only occupying one inventory slot (once they exceed a stack, I list them on the TP). When I acquire a key from map completion, personal story or an extremely rare drop, I open a chest, roll my eyes at the paltry contents and then carry on about my business. I really do not understand why people buy keys.. but then again, I’m a hard sell, to the point where I’ve actually had phone solicitors slam down their receivers on me. :P

How do rangers feel

I have not played WoW, but I did play a Hunter in LOTRO, and I find the LOTRO hunter to be much more fun. (and that was without pets, which I actually preferred)

I’m not saying the ranger is a terrible class, but it lacks spice. If you use traps it gets better, since they provide variety, but still..

I find they actually communicate a lot. Patience is something we have lost long ago.
If they have to communicate at the rate you want then they won’t have any time to actually do something…

Except that usually the people working the communications lines are not the same as those doing the actual programming.
Also, as mentioned, other MMOs (and yes, they do have their own set of faults) do a much better job with communication.

But anyway… Here’s to hoping that it will all improve in the new year.

Equally, though I have never played the game, I have seen WoW’s patch notes and they are extremely detailed as well.

I’ve worked in marketing… regular and informative communication with your customers or client base is KEY.

Lack of communication during holidays

Artemis Noir.3804

For the most part I become irritated by the non-constructive moan threads, but I agree with the OP.
One of the major causes of failed relationships is a lack of communication between the parties involved. Most marriage therapists will tell you this.
The relationship between a business (especially a game developer) and its customer base is very similar IMO. If people feel as though they are not being heard, even when they are polite and constructive, they become disheartened, and previously supportive customers start to feel disgruntled.

Even with something so simple as patch notes there is a distinct lack of communication on the part of Anet. I’m sure we all remember the recent temporary removal of armour previews outside of one’s class. Had Anet included a detailed explanation in the patch notes the ensuing kerfuffle and confusion could have been easily avoided. Instead, it took at least three threads on the topic before receiving an official response.

Further, without communication there is a far greater tendency for people to concoct absurd conspiracy theories. Is this really what Anet wants?

The Salvage Gamble: Why?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Artemis Noir.3804

Artemis Noir.3804

I feel as though maybe I am missing something here…
I have singularly terrible luck trying to salvage ectos from rares, even if I use a Black Lion kit. Most of the people I know have from bad to average luck with this endeavour. Some time ago I made the decision to simply sell my rares. Currently ectos average between 25 and 30 silver each; rares sell for between 25 and 40 silver, depending on the item and supply. Assuming I buy ectos with every rare I sell, that translates to a 1:1 ratio (sometimes more, in my favour)
It’s not a great gain, no, but it is a certain gain.

Meanwhile, most people I know with luck similar to my own persist in salvaging rares… One fellow felt he did OK upon obtaining 4 ectos from a total of 6 rares. I told him that had he sold those rares and bought the ectos instead, he’d have ended up with at least 6. Yet, he still seemed to think he’d come out ahead.
I don’t understand. Is it the thrill of gambling maybe?

People can argue posting fees, but what about the cost of the salvage kit?

At this point, unless I want a shot at the rune/sigil contained in the item, I don’t see much point in salvaging.

So, if you salvage, and you don’t have great luck, why do you do it? I’m honestly a tad perplexed.

And people who salvage exotics? Unless the item has something like a Divinity rune, I don’t understand at all.

p.s This is NOT intended as a gripe thread about “nerfs” or the RNG etc. etc. I’m seriously just trying to satisfy a curiosity.

Artemis Noir.3804

One thing seriously bugs me about this topic…do you also consider everybody who runs power/vit/toughness a leecher? Or power/precision/toughness? Or any set that includes toughness/vitality?

Except that people running vitality and toughness are far less likely to die, which means they are doing damage because they are standing rather than in a permanent downed state. Further, if they are standing, they are also able to rez, bringing even more to the party. The person in full MF, on the other hand, is like the individual who shows up to a group lunch in a restaurant and “forgets” to bring their wallet. They take, but they contribute nothing.

Do I have an MF set? Sure I do. But, I only wear it while farming easy DE’s like Pen/Shelter, or while running around solo sometimes. If I end up in a dungeon group I immediately replace it with my good gear.

As to servers, I was lucky enough to get on TC when I first bought the game shortly after launch. It is a really great server with a fairly mature community. I am typically wary of PUGs, but so far I have only had one bad experiences, and I think that says something about the server population. Best class for a solo player?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Artemis Noir.3804

Artemis Noir.3804

But after that i want to start playing a different class. I found ranger unsuitable for playing alone and overall kinda weak. It’s only good against single targets and has no survivability. I play alone most of the time and i want to pick a class that is the best for playing solo.

I have an 80 ranger that I have mostly soloed. No offense, but when I read this I actually wondered if we were even playing the same class. The ranger is extremely good for solo PvE. Both the longbow and shortbow have a nice AoE, and if you are specced in traps you have even more AoE options. I have also found the ranger to be surprisingly tough and eminently capable in melee combat.

Now, I have read that rangers tend to be weak in PvP, but I have only played PvE, and as I stated, they are very good in that area. It’s no accident that most botters pick the ranger and brown bear combo; it’s very survivable and provides plenty of AoE options for loot tagging. Now, we even have a 25% speed buff, which makes the class yet more effective in PvE.

My only real issue with the PvE ranger is that it feels a bit one dimensional. However, my main is an elementalist, and I figure after playing the ele any class aside from engineer or mesmer is going to seem a little bland. But, that is just my personal bias, others will obviously differ.

Chance of Salvaging Ecto Changed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Artemis Noir.3804

Artemis Noir.3804

I think, given the varying results people seem to get, that much is based on the RNG. For example, I have several friends that always manage to salvage at least one ecto from a rare, if not three. I personally have such bad luck (even when using a Black Lion kit) that I have simply started just selling any rares I find. This is guaranteed to net me between about 25 and 40 silver, depending on type and availability of the item, which is roughly (give or take) the price of an ecto. It’s not a fantastic return, sure, but it is a certain return. I suspect that in the long run my stack of ectos is going to be quite similar to most salvagers who average between zero and three ectos per attempt.

And why would anyone salvage an exotic for ectos? Depending on the type of exotic, you should be able to buy at least three (or considerably more) ectos just from the profits accrued from selling it. I only salvage an exotic if it has an amazing upgrade on it.

Why even have armor types?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Artemis Noir.3804

LOTRO allows people to cosmetically wear any kind of apparel, no matter their class, through their very excellent wardrobe system (hint hint) and it works fine. Yes, some pieces do clip, but from what I have noticed there, players avoid putting together things that clip. I mean, who (unless they have the fashion sense of the average Risen) is going to wear items together that look entirely hideous?

Besides, a lot of armour and weapon combinations already clip as it is. The huge, wide greatswords cut right into leather coats. Apart from the fact that I dislike the pearl skin, this was a major reason why I changed my Norn ranger’s GS into a Krytan design.

Why was armor preview disabled?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Artemis Noir.3804

Seems like it was decided to stealth remove this, then when the outrage started foaming, they back peddled.

I was entirely with you until I read the above. Why on earth would Anet “stealth remove” such a completely innocuous feature? It doesn’t impact game-play or balance AT ALL. It’s not as though they were secretly nerfing a class, or reducing loot… I can understand why an MMO company would be less than forthcoming about such changes. However, removing something that was solely a convenience ?!?

That, I simply do not buy.

Anyway Anet, glad to hear this is just a temporary change… just.. next time, could you please include this kind of information in the patch notes?

As far as clipping goes…
Some pieces clip even if they are of the same armour type.

Further, how many people have seen how horribly massive greatswords clip into leather coats? I couldn’t stand the Pearl greatsword on my Norn ranger anyway (ugly and it doesn’t fit thematically), so I transmuted it into the Krytan style, which clips much less.

So honestly, I do not think clipping is a valid argument.
