My idea to fix population in WvW:
- Don’t touch servers, no need to merge.
- Reduce tiers to only two:
- Tier 1 will be as it is right now, the top 3 servers.
- Tier 2 will be temporally merged servers as it is in EotM map.
- Every week, the 3rd place of T1 will go to T2, and the best performing in T2 will go to T1.
- If the queue is too big in T2, a new instance could be created, etc. (there are multiple solutions to this problem)
Just to be clear, you’re advocating leaving T1 alone, with 3 servers… and merging all the rest to the second “tier” where they fight it out in multi-instance EotM style matchups???
I need to make sure that I’m actually reading that right…
It shouldn’t be the case that a server can lose every fight but still win the match.
Has this ever happened? I mean, EVER? In Tier 1, this would be nearly impossible, as most weeks Points From Stomps are at least 1/3 of the winning server’s total.
What’s going on down there in Tier 8?
Let’s go ahead and cut this off here.
Of course he is biased towards his own personal experience, just as you are biased towards yours and I am biased toward my own. Don’t devolve this into server bashing and trash.
Everyone, contribute towards the discussion or please refrain from posting.
Here are some of my hastily compiled ideas. Keep in mind that I’m going off NA server numbers, and EU would have to be set up slightly different.
1) Encourage de-stacking of population
-Transfer downward: Bronze-free – Silver-200 gems – no Gold to Gold transfers
-Transfer upwards: Bronze-200 gems per WvW rank up – Silver-400 per rank up – no Gold upward transfers – (e.g. going from Gold to Silver is 200 gems flat rate, but going from rank 24 server to 20 server is 800 gems, from rank 13 to rank 10 is 1200 gems)
-Limit so that everyone does not simply agree to stack onto a low ranked server
-Possibly set a publicly visible transfer cap – higher caps for lower ranked servers
2) Run a month of traditional matchups
-Test population balance and determine effective strength – transfers are LOCKED during this time
-Effective Strength = weekly average for the # of players in WvW for 15+ minutes in a 24hr period
3) Set up Alliances
-Treat each server as a “nation” – each alliance will be made up of 8 nations – 3 total alliances.
-Alliances must have equal as possible combined effective strength
-Having only 3 alliances allows flexibility with 8 nations per team that can be matched up for balance and fresh matchups each week
4) Begin new matchups
-Matchups will be will be linked together, two nations to a side, each with their own borderlands (6 total) but only 1 EB
-Matchups will be balanced around the combined effective strength of both nations on a side (i.e. side A&B strength ~ side C&D strength ~ side E&F strength)
-Matchup results and scores contribute to overall “war score”
-After a set time (3 months?) the alliance with highest score wins the war
5) start the cycle over again
-Skip step 2, as effective strength of each nation should be tracked throughout the war
Hey everyone!
Just wanted to introduce myself. I’m a server programmer here at ArenaNet and am excited to be part of the Adopt-A-Dev program for the WvW fall tournament.
I will be running with the League of Tyrian Adventurers [LoTA] on Kaineng. While Kaineng isn’t in the top tier, it is my home. I’ve been with it since starting the game and I feel a sense of allegiance towards it – so I hope I can help in some small way.
Regardless, this will be a lot of fun. If you see me in game, I am usually the big Charr Engineer named Vox Machinum. Say hi if you see me.
So we have a dev after all! I hope Anet considers your perspective just as much as all the devs playing in Gold league. It can be hell on lower tiers, with barely a wvw population to speak of at times. I’d rather deal with queues on higher tiers than wander aimlessly through empty borderlands.
That’s why I don’t believe the ranger in itself is a problem, only the amount of them.
This is probably a big reason why a lot of people are complaining. Many people were eager to try out the new changes, so they brought out their rangers and there’s a metric ton running around right now, rapid firing everything in sight. It should die down in a week or two.
That much damage that fast from that range is game breaking.
That much damage from range was ALREADY POSSIBLE BEFORE. Suddenly, when it’s 1.5s faster, it magically becomes “game breaking.” Hilarious.
Ok I’ve been tossing this challenge around for like 12 hours straight and not a single taker. I’m going to bed, but this thread will continue to exist. Great critiques Zefrost, you really proved you have any idea what’s going on.
You have a problem? I don’t have a ranger.
Clearly capable of a rational discussion on the matter, then.
Melee burst ( warr/thief) needs a buff to compete with rapid fire.
lol at this. Never thought I’d see the day.
Ranger finally gets viable burst and everyone loses their mind. To the point of claiming warriors and thieves need their burst improved.
And I’ll just leave this little tidbit I found on GW2 Reddit …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWfPM8yc2ZA&feature=youtu.be
people have been talking about this for an hour or two now. prepare for some kind of nerf
Why? Because he put himself under ideal conditions, activated every utility (including pet), and killed a garbage pve mob?
Meanwhile a single dodge would probably negate all that damage.
Ranger is only Easy mode for those of us that learn’t to use dodges and evades as a life line because without those pre-patch a ranger is dead , regen or not.
easy mode you say it was one of the hardest classes to use because of it being underpowered and heavy reliance on evades to survive.
now we have SotF and signets baseline its much more balanced out of using the classic Power/condi Evade+dodge bunker.
This always makes me laugh. Every time a spec is OP, the OP class always says to dodge.
And every time a class gets a buff, the other classes all cry “OP!”
Welcome to Guild Wars 2 forums.
At any rate, Rangers got a buff because they needed it. It’s as simple as that.
I wonder if they will spend much time in the bottom of Bronze League, wandering aimlessly through the empty borderlands.
As a side note, who wants to send me transfer gems!?!?
Ehhh it lacked emotion. You need to let it come from the heart!!
See attached:
**Please note gifs and jpg get extra style points. This allows you to save up for the ultimate GAMEBREAKER!!!!!
Kaineng scrubs, please stop tanking. I know you just want to blob and PvDoor in Bronze League, but save yourselves the embarrassment of losing to servers with half your numbers!
….wait…. that’s not right. I play on Kaineng. I think I’m not very good at this.
Something’s probly wrong with mah gif too….

Ok, you…. stink at this game. I mean all you guy do is get into a large group and take our things! And you’re not very nice, either!
How did I do?
I will say that DR is doing well given the difference in ranking between servers. Every time I check you guys are holding +200 or more ppt.
Kain wipes whenever they encounter half their numbers.
Good thing they have more than the other two servers put together. They do OK if they all run around in one big blob.
Seriously, some of your wipes have been the most fail-tastic I have ever seen in Guild Wars. Ever.
Because why keep things civil if we can bash and generalize another server, right?
You were all in one Zerg. You all did the same thing. It’s hard not to generalise when you all act like clones.
The only time I saw Kain who weren’t in the Zerg, they appeared to be lost up levels trying desperately to keep up with the Zerg.
Dude you’re talking a lot of trash for absolutely no reason.
Why?
I guess some people need to be anonymously abusive over a video game to make themselves feel better.
Seriously, Wanderer, it’s all been heard before. How about we relax and play the game?

This kind of talk is so stale. It’s in every matchup, every week. It ends up sounding like you just rage quit and came directly here. Please cool off a bit before posting in the future.
lol it’s nice to see the Kaineng super zergs scratch their heads in uncertainty after their first plan fails.
I missed you guys!
lol@ super zergs. What was it? 10 Kains?
Sorry for the poor quality, it was hard to get a good screen with everyone dry humping the keeps door.
And? Aren’t we being a little dramatic?
lol it’s nice to see the Kaineng super zergs scratch their heads in uncertainty after their first plan fails.

here are the estimated probabilities for the next matchup.
-ken
That’s excellent, thanks!
Looks like we may have a decent shot at seeing the Mag/SBI/SoS matchup, but I’m at least hoping to see 2 of the 3 in a match together.
As for Kaineng, well I hate to say it but we need a morale booster badly, so any server that we actually outnumber.
Is KN really this depleted, or perhaps just tanking to try for… I guess they’d call it Bronze League?
It’s hard to tell what we actually have in terms of numbers anymore. I usually stick to KBL when I’m in WvW and the most I’ve seen recently has been around 20 at any one place, but that is becoming exceedingly rare. I’m often lucky to find 10 people in a group.
Agreed that some GvG guys are pretentious, but it’s hardly fair to generalize the whole community that way. That type of attitude exists in every aspect of GW2. Stop by the Dungeon forum for a few minutes, and you’re guaranteed to see it. MMO’s tend to breed that kind of behavior.
I have never participated in a GvG even once, but I’m still willing to support it because the bigger issue to me is that Anet has done almost nothing to improve the state of WvW since launch. In fact, I feel that the majority of updates have caused more harm than good. So, I will support players for coming up with ways to break the PvDoor grind because the company running the game has failed to do so.

I find it entertaining that the most consistent posters to the warrior forum are people complaining about warrior. It’s like a dedicated QQ squad.
Guardian is the safest bet. Guardian is perfect for in a lot of situations and hardly ever gets nerfed.
Warrior might be better right now but if the people in this thread keep complaining about how OP it is then it might not be next month.
I can’t remember the thread, but I’m pretty sure Anet has said that Warrior is one of the few classes that they are actually happy with at the moment.
Most likely, they will be balancing other classes around where the warrior is currently at….. i.e. the warrior can fulfill many different roles in a meaningful way, which is what they hope to accomplish for all classes. But that is simply just speculation on my part.
Lots of warrior hate in here. It’s like being on the warrior forums hahaha.
Server pride is one server bragging because they are able to pull in the most uncontested PPT due to coverage.
Fully agreed, but I’m just trying to come up with reasons I think it would be a good idea from Anet’s perspective. With the forum trash talk and the uncertainty, this would be one of the very few matchups I would actually follow that I wasn’t involved in.
What are the odds of us getting Anet to suspend RNG for a few weeks to make sure that when leagues lock in that servers are in the right position?
It’s too late for that. For example, Ehmry Bay has had weeks upon weeks of being matched up with servers ranked much higher than they are so their actual rating is vastly inflated.
Hmmm. Perhaps just arranging this matchup, then? I think it would be a fantastic move on their (Anet’s) part, since we have a lot of people who want to see how this matchup would end up. I think it would be very competitive, something that WvW on the whole is sorely lacking, and it also plays into the whole idea of “server pride” that Anet keeps trying so hard to push.
Also consider that it would be for the last spot in gold league, meaning that the winning server would face an extreme uphill battle at the beginning of the season, and they are actually competing over it.

What are the odds of us getting Anet to suspend RNG for a few weeks to make sure that when leagues lock in that servers are in the right position?
The last time I ran into queue issues caused by a gvg match, we were trying to take a well defended Bay keep. A significant portion of our players were locked out of the map, and the defenders were able to easily outnumber what should have a been a full map queue.
I know we weren’t queued against you when you were crying about the horrible mag zerg in August – how long ago was that incident?
I have no idea what you’re referring to, but I don’t think it’s related. This did happen in the last month or two, I’m thinking it was maybe Dragonbrand. I’m not really sure which server it was, though.
We had a large force, full queue or very near it. When we moved to a different map, quite a few were unable to follow because of a queue. I don’t know if the defenders had a full queue or not, but we were hitting the player limit despite clearly having fewer players with us. They definitely had more than we did, despite the game telling us we were at the limit, with no other apparent forces on the map. It was right afterwards that we found out about the gvg that was happening on that map.
There was a bit of confusion when people started reporting the queue, because we knew the number we had with us wasn’t enough to cause it.
I’m sorry, but out of the 168 hours of match time, that ~1/2 – 1 hour the GvG may have lasted was a decisive turning point? Not to mention the 2 other borderlands + EB that must have had objectives to take.
And I know you’re saying “Well, the queue was keeping out the people who wanted to play WvW the way its meant to be played,” but that argument doesn’t hold either. Unless Anet officially condemns GvG, there is nothing wrong with two organized groups fighting in open field. I don’t understand why people are getting so upset because guilds found a way to break the monotony of the PPT grind.
These anti-GvG people are baffling to me. I love WvW, or at least the idea of WvW, but in practice it is just not working. Because in my experience, all that happens in your standard WvW session is one zerg enters a borderlands, caps undefended objectives, and either wipes once and leaves or gets bored and leaves. After that, the home server retakes everything they lost, which is again undefended. The only time its really any different is on reset night. The PPT game is boring; you know it and I know it so there is no point in denying it.
I have to chuckle at all the negative whining about how Anet is destroying wvw. First of all, they kinda maybe sorta OWN the game, not the players. People need to get this through their thick heads. Anet does not force transfers, or condemn transfers. They very clearly gave those choices to the community, so how in the kitten is all the transferring Anet’s fault? And please spare us your “logical” reasoning for consistently bashing the dev’s, as the arguments for such idiocy are simply ludicrous. The guild that I am currently repping, and myself, transferred to a lower tier server, near the bottom of the field, and found a much better wvw community as a whole, and they really really want to win matches and see their server rise to the top. But the funny thing is, the same week that roughly 25 of us join the server, that particular server just happens earn it’s second only, first place match up.
Imagine that. Just a handful of players actually can make a difference, if they all work together for a common goal. Who woulda thunk it?
I… I don’t know how to respond to this. It’s so fallacious that I don’t know what to even say.
Trash talk for future matchups? That’s a heck of an indication of just how boring this week is going to be.
Pleas to ‘keep trying and playing’ and ‘come out and fight’ fall on deaf ears when servers that were bandwagoned on to created their own bed. Then they have to lie in it.
I think I’m a little confused about what you mean by “created their own bed.” Even back in T8 days, I don’t remember Kaineng begging for mass transfers, because we knew what would happen. And it’s exactly what did happen; we climbed our way all the way up the rankings only to be abandoned, and left into matchups we can’t possibly compete in.
Our current WvW situation is so bad that even day 1 Kaineng guys are leaving. It’s not even about winning, it’s about being able to play. 90% of the time its either PvDoor or 10v40, and it’s incredibly demoralizing.
You ever wonder if the boss’s son over there is a psych student who has drafted the WvW team into a messed up prolonged experiment in voluntary masochism in electronic entertainment, which he’s writing his thesis on?
In all seriousness, I’d love to read the end result.
This thread is lacking in Kaineng, so….
Kaineng. Kaineng, Kaineng; Kaineng: Kaineng.
That is all.
I’m fairly new to Guardian, so I’m playing around with different traits and builds, kind of a “throw it at the wall and see what sticks” deal. At any rate, I came across the Searing Flames trait in the Radiance line and I’m a little unclear on how it works. I haven’t been able to find much clear info on this trait so far.
Description: When you apply burning to a foe, remove a boon. This effect can only trigger once every 20 seconds.
Now, does this mean literally one and only one foe, for a 20 second cooldown, period? Or say I have Permeating Wrath, so I’m getting an aoe burn on 5 different enemies at once; does this mean that it will remove a boon on each one? If it’s the former, it seems like a waste of time, but the latter scenario may make it somewhat useful.
Seal Team 6! [SEAL]
Success on Kaineng BL.
Just about anything is successful on Kaineng BL.
It takes a minimum of 2 keeps lost before we can even start rallying support.
EBay zergin’ the buttlust. Amazing reset so far!
If that was Maguuma BL, that was Mag’s group attacking our two people who were capping. Never see fewer than 10 mags in there at a time. Way to “Breakup the Zerg”
No, it was not Maguuma attacking two people. I have no idea what game you’re playing but there were plenty of small skirmishes that involved less than four maguuma players in buttlust.
And with that, we’re just back to the same ol’ game of people over exaggerating numbers or not knowing how to count :T
Buttlust
You like our name for it, eh?
I use “BloodClot” because it just clogs up stuff that was once open and generally causes or is indicative of a bigger problem
Excellent!
Hello, I’m Alpha Squared and I approve of this topic!
Seriously, though Rieselle, I think you are really getting to the heart of the issue with WvW here. Whether intentionally or not, the design of the game mode has created a style of play where players actually ignore and avoid other players because it is both a) more beneficial to the server’s overall score and b) more beneficial to themselves personally.
It can not be overstated how harmful this is. WvW is a players versus players game at its very core, yet right now the best way to play it “successfully” is by avoiding players.
I do like the ideas you have for changing the incentives, but honestly I have no idea how difficult (if even possible) it would be to implement something like that.
WvW is lucky for now, because there’s no modern RvR type MMO alternative. So many of us are playing this game, even if every corner of it screams about PvE.
We are those who find it a waste of time to play against an AI, we want to play with humans and against humans, not for our own “glory” (sPvP rankings and such) – but for our team (guild, realm, world).
I’ll never play it because of monthly subscriptions, but if what Bethesda says about ESO is true, it sounds like it will blow WvW out of the water.
My video shows that
1. The server with more coverage wins even with or without the buff.
2. That you can still beat one another even if your opponent has the buff and you don’t, and while I was fighting that thief – we ganked him and eventually I also had the buff, but not at the beginning of the fight, which meant either way, he’s dead.
3. You can still do gvg’s at the usual spot with the usual guys, you just have to time it where both of your servers has the same buffs – and then duke it out (but this time has a limit, where the buffs add to one party or not, both parties now can choose whether to stop the fight or continue it. Or send players and allies to ensure that the buffs remain similar all throughout the borderlands (just a manner of working together with players)
4. And I always end up with a Think; win. because if only players thinked a little bit more, the solution to adapt to the new meta will appear. On your reply to my post. Thank you, I appreciate your position. And I do hope that the developers can gather ideas from what you guys wish to share.
Even if GVG’s 15v15 or 20v20 isn’t really a part of wvw proper, it’s still a fun way to play gw2, and should be incorporated into the system. That’s a free idea worth 100’s of thousands there.
If I may respond to a couple of your points:
1. Yes, but that’s not the issue. A server that has better coverage can more easily control the capture points for the buff in each borderland, making their players stronger across the board because of coverage alone. This is one of my biggest problems with it because it emphasizes the power of coverage even more. Granted, they are relatively easy to cap (normally just having 3 roamers in the area will be enough on lower tiers), but that means it will be just as easy for an enemy zerg entering your borderlands to cap it from you, and easier for them to maintain with their larger numbers.
2. Again, yes. 1v1 or small group situations, individual player skill can overcome stat advantage. We’ve seen this from the beginning of WvW, just by the nature of players being on uneven ground (gear/food). But, the more players that are involved, the more that stat gap is magnified and begins to have a more meaningful impact. This is especially true in a situation where a smaller, organized group (say 20-25) is trying to take on a 35-40 man zerg. It weakens the power of organization over numbers, while WvW should be about exactly the opposite.
Obviously, that’s just my opinion. Eventually players will either adapt or leave, so it probably matters very little who is “right” or “wrong” about this.
Why do we not have verification on this information? As in, why would Anet not spell out how points are earned?
It seems to me like it makes all the sense in the world for players to learn how to score points and develop a strategy around that. After all, this is supposed to be at least a semi-competitive game mode.
I have been on Devona’s Rest from day 1. As I remembered it back in the first few weeks I started playing, we were the underdogs being placed at the bottom, but managed to pull our selves together, and bring ourselves up to 5th tier. But with school becoming a problem and other personal reasons, I took about a 3-5 month break from playing Guild Wars 2. After finally returning a couple of weeks ago, I was sadly greeted to a devastated WvW community. Seeing this happen was quite devastating to me, and decided to take up commanding DR forces, and after a a few weeks of doing so, I have been able to understand better the sever population problem with WvW. Seeing as a WvW tournament is coming up, I can only morn over the fact that this tournament will potentially ruin our entire WvW community, since most people will stray from WvW for good after realizing that there is potentially, “no point”, into playing WvW due to us being stomped purely by overwhelming numbers repeatedly.
I won’t ask for a band aid for our sever as it will potentially create more problems, but I will one day hope that the population deficiency for DR WvW will be resolved, and that more people will find the great fun in WvW even if we are outnumbered around the clock.
We (Kaineng) were right there with you in T8 getting beat on by Borlis Pass and others. We used to put all of our resources into just holding Cliffside tower. Like you, I was gone for around 5 months, so I wasn’t here for Kaineng’s rise to power, but since I’ve been back this server has been on its way back down, and we are soon to suffer another significant blow. And even though OP specifically mentioned us, I can tell you WvW is often not much fun over here either.
You guys will be greatly missed. Good luck, and I hope you find a server that’s a good fit.
At least they should make a darker version of the shortbow like twilight/sunrise
Clearly they need to make a heavy metal version.

What are your thoughts on swapping balanced stance and endure pain for Dolyak Signet and Signet of Stamina, and changing Vigorous Focus to Signet Mastery?
…banning….for gear?…..
It wont, and shouldnt convince them. Personally I could care less either way about the stat points, though i love the stomp ppt part. However to argue against a WvW development for GvG (ie NOT WvW) reasons, is just not going to work, and it shouldnt. Thats like arguing against a sPvP change for PvE reasons. GvG is NOT WvW, it should not even be considered when making changes and developments regarding WvW. They can go stroke their kitten in the sanctum
Fine, don’t consider it. Plenty of non-GvG players have posted saying they oppose this, mechanics that favor the most populated server in a match are bad for obvious reasons that have been pointed out over and over. Straight stat buffs are also the least interesting means of giving a reward for holding these new points, and lead to confrontations that would have been even before feeling like they were unfair.
Yes uneven fights are part of WvW’s appeal and a big reason why many (including me) prefer it to sPvP, but that doesn’t mean Anet should make it mechanically impossible to have an even one. What I find amusing (in a depressing way) is that most of the people posting in support of Bloodlust seem to be doing so because they want GvG to fail/be ignored.
Exactly.
@Shemsu, every post of yours has just been anti-GvG. Consider that a big part of why GvG has evolved is exactly because of the way WvW is functioning. People don’t enjoy PvDoor, and ppt is based almost completely on coverage and numbers. Why would you enjoy taking an undefended keep? There is no sense of accomplishment. The enjoyment of WvW comes from clashing with other players, whether in open field or in a siege. The buff discourages clashing of players period.
Your post completely misses it. GvG didnt evolve because of the way wvw is functioning, it evolved because wvw is anonymous, and thats not good enough for some players to stroke their kitten too, they want everyone to know how leet they are so they can get off.
Not only that, I never once argued for the stat buff, I could care less, its 500 health, 50 toughness, thats 1/6th of an autoattack not gonna be a game changer. The ppt on stomps i think is an amazing mechanic that could change things up alot. Like i said before, if a FAIR and EVEN fight is what people really wanted, custom arenas exist, but they cant walk around with flashy legendaries stroking themselves for being so amazing at spamming a skill rotation
I guess I just don’t see it the way you do then. Maybe the guilds you interact with are different than the ones I see. The best WvW guild on my server is CNB, and they are not at all like that.
As for the buff, which after all was the whole point of this topic, I think my point still stands. All it accomplishes is further reinforcing the power of map coverage via WvW population.
It wont, and shouldnt convince them. Personally I could care less either way about the stat points, though i love the stomp ppt part.
