First time signing into the forums in months, I have to say I am impressed Anet. You really did a good job in fixing the bugs we outlined, with reproducable steps, 4 months ago.

I loved signing into pvp for the first time in months and getting perma-immobilized within 30 seconds due to phase retreat being bugged.

I was over-joyed to test out Illusionary Elasticity and see it working correctly with clone bounces now.

I was humbled that Anet thought my skill level was so good that they will make my sword skills not work, since I can obviously win without them.

Thought I am sad that I am such a poor leader that my clones won’t attack my enemies, worse they will make neutral parties want to kill me. Maybe if I become a decent player my phantasms will start working properly.

I started to write a detailed and analytical post outlining contrasting factors and elements that make up the current state of the game then I realized; why bother? We have made threads with hundreds of pages of details outlining what you have asked for. We have tested over and over again. We have provided detailed reproducible bug reports.

And what does it announce to? Nothing.

If you want to actually have a constructive and positive discussion with your community about balance or game factors, start by showing your willingness to actually do something instead of just making another ‘lets divert attention by talking about it’ thread every few months.

As for pretending our input will change something:

PVE: Warriors far too dominant due to how many mistakes you can get away with yet out survive and out perform other classes. Somewhat relevant to other game modes.

Small scale WVW: Stealth far too dominant. Theives/lesser degree mesmers gain far too much for such a forgiving mechanic. Revealed should be 4s.

Large scale WVW: Would be nice if something other than warriors/guardians had a reason to exist outside of tech.

My main class Mesmer: pointless to even discuss balance with so many bugs. I love being perma-immobilized constantly due to bugged skills (phase retreat, blink).

You may want to change the topic to wwvw/pvp as this is worse in wvw due to multiple thieves chaining refuge/lower revealed/much more z axis movement potential.

Shadow Refuge also becomes instantly useless if you manage to knock them out of it. Most other skills doesn’t have that risk involved.

That relies on your opponent having a push/pull available on the current weapon/weapon swap available and being close enough to the thief to use it, as well as the knockback being non-targeted as stealth breaks targets. A well placed shadowstep/withdraw will migrate most of that risk, as does using refuge on the appropriate terrain.

As well as that, being in refuge isn’t stopping a thief dodging, moving (the radius of shadow refuge is decent after all) or using basi to proc lyssa runes (obviously this is an assumption on the thives build, but is very common due to the low cd on basi and the strength of Lyssa runes).

Yes, Shadow Refuge does have some counterplay. But in terms of risk/reward, especially in comparision to other skills in the game, the skill is simply too rewarding.

Thanks for the bug reports guys, these are important to us and we will make an effort to have them resolved within the next few patches so you can play your chosen class properly without worrying about your play style failing due to technical errors.

You may want to keep a text copy of the first few posts so when the anet’s Ministry of Truth… I mean moderators storm in here to close the thread it can be reposted in the bug section.

On topic, regarding point 5, if you target a thief and summon a phantasm, then the thief stealths with a long duration stealth, the phantasm often changes target. This means you accidentally aggro nearby mobs…

Torch phantasms projectile often misses, I spent a while testing this. If the target is moving the projectile often just fails to hit. Same with scepter clones.

Illusionary elasticity does not affect staff clones but affects other clones… really unsure about this one, it would be extremely strong if it did but the behavior being inconsistent is questionable.

If I recall correctly, Illusionary Celeratiy does not correctly lower the duration of scepter block.

Decoy still stealths you when you have revealed up. Possibly due to it giving ‘Decoy’ as a buff not stealth.

Also the behavior of Mimic could be considered buggy, if that counts.

I know there are a lot more, but am at work atm so cannot verify.

If your going to change Deceptive Evasion (clone creation on dodge) can you atleast deal with the targeting issues that have plagued this since release…

If a Mesmer dodges with this trait equipped, it does not create a clone on their target, it often creates a clone on the nearest possible target (though this still acts strange at times). Including ambient mobs, yellow mobs etc. This is horrible in wvw as you can be fighting someone and accidentally aggro nearby mobs. Warrior about to killshot you? Dodge so the nearby veteran firewood can be accidentally aggro’d and proceed to immobilize you. Trying to set up a well placed shatter for a final burst? Lets target that nearby rabbit instead and waste your clones and dodge.

It’s been over a year since release. These class bugs – for all classes, affect balance and playability in multiple game modes, yet they still exist. If you are going to change how a skill functions, at least fix the bugs which have been reported time and time again. Get your act together Anet.

I would like to ask about the torch phantasm (illusionary mage). In a power spec, he offers nothing. In a condi spec, a staff clone is more useful for condi application. His only ‘use’ other than as an illusion is the condi clearing on skill use, but the application is so slow it isn’t exactly reliable.

What are anets thoughts on this skill and do they understand that the torch is taken for the 4 skill (stealth), never for the phantasm. (spreadsheet balance causes assumptions)

Hopeless thieves. Some of the best fights I have had are against good thieves, many who became friends as a result. But seeing thieves spam stealth/22222/attack 1vX with far more confidence than skill… instant targets.

Meta warriors. So many of them misplay and make constant mistakes yet there is almost no punishment due to how easily builds can carry them. That moment when a trolling warrior engages you then realizes they picked the fight with the wrong person… when their health is low and can’t escape… it’s so amusing.

Ok look, I want to be honest.
Guild Wars 2 Player vs. Player is fun to play. It is the best at the moment but it is so underdeveloped when there is this giant monster called World vs. World.

World vs. World is fun and all. But if anything, it is killing every thing that could have been devoted to making PvP better in this game.

Sure, honesty is good, but I think you concerns are misplaced.

1. Designers
They are making Edge of the Mists, which is a very large WvW map. This new map is coming out this year. It took away designers that could have been deployed to make new PvP maps or improve existing ones (looks at Skyhammer)

Speaking of which, we’ve never heard about ANYTHING about new maps or upcoming game modes after Skyhammer. Are they being worked on, or the developers simply cannot do more than making empty promises saying “there will be new game modes” after 1.5 years of the game release?

I would guess that map designers are a completly different role to mode designers – in which the fundamental point is balence (lol) rather than map design.

That being said, EOTM is sort of required, the current setup of WVW. For most players, you are either on a lower tier server (not active) or on an active server which you have to deal with queues. If you sign in and have to wait for queues constantly, a lot of people get fed up and stop playing. This is bad for anet.

WVW has seen very little content updates since release. The major one – the map changes, were hated by large numbers of people as they basically added a spvp map into the middle of wvw. Ranks were added, but again that was another ‘wtf are you doing this anet’ when most of them are blatent power creep while in reality provided no content change. PVP has seen far more focus and updates, even if many of those are misguided.

2. Balance
I need to talk about the balance, but essentially a quick example~when PvP players complain about AoE being faceroll-strong WvW players whine about AoE not being strong enough to kill mindless zergs. HOW are you going to balance this game at all if people are completely asking for opposite balance changes???

The game is balenced fully around pvp. WVW means nothing in terms of balence. I cannot think of a single balence change since release that was designed for wvw. The only minor exception was changing retal/confusion to their pvp levels instead of wvw levels in wvw, which was obviously required from the start – and worse was bugged for months and different maps did different amount of damage. gg testers.

I don’t think it’s fair to complain, in any sense, about wvw impacting balence.

Also for what it’s worth, the complaints about AOE are often tied to AOE being limited to 5 people rather than the strength of the skill.

3. Community focus
It is being taken away and distracted. Josh “Grouch” Davis is now being moved to the WvW forums as its new director.

I’m not saying it is a bad thing, yes alright, it is definitely a good thing for WvW crowds because Josh really knows how to improve this game. As you know, WvW has been even less improved than PvP. Players there are even less satisfied than we are.

Are you aware that the pvp forums were the only forums with any developer response for a long time? Other than small comments or casual remarks in pvp forums?

Are you aware the only dev who ever responded to wvw forums was Devon, who seems to have dissapeared, the majority of the time there was nothing?

Are you actually aware of how favored pvp is over other game modes on these forums? Grouch expanding to other sets isn’t a bad thing, especially when these forums have such little activity now. It’s not like it matters, half the posts from dev’s are pointless or full of mistakes anyway…

In all respect, I have to ask, don’t you think your post and concerns are a little biased? PVP is not doing well, a lot of that is from decisions made by developers rather than focus from wvw/pve. I don’t anet make much, if any, money from the current state of pvp – yet every other game mode has to deal with the amount of attention given to esports and lack of actual balance again due to esports.

In reality, most of the points you said could be said on the wvw forum about pvp. The problem is decisions made by developers – you don’t have to take a team of wvw to fix healing signet. You don’t have to stop living story for a month to realize the dumbfire patch really messed up balance. But if you continue to allow the resources allocated to make the same mistakes over and over again, then your problem is far more concerning than what this post is referencing.

So yeah… please less ill informed threads pointing fingers at wrong thing and more telling anet to get their act together.

A lot of the condi application from the PU build which has been around for a while comes from Debilitating Dissipation. Run the build without it and the it becomes noticeable. This change to DE makes decent skill shatter builds even less worth running and is the wrong approach.

If you want to tone down the passive nature of that condi build, replace the bleeds from that trait with something else. At the same time, can you look at mesmers overall and consider changes to allow a decent condi build that doesn’t rely on staff clones/clone death traits. Previously that was possible with confusion but with so many class changes, often making no sense, it doesn’t really work anymore.

For clarification: if you have 0-2 clones out and you dodge, you will summon a clone.

If you have 3 clones out and you dodge, nothing will happen.

That’s why I suggested 2 options before saying just fix the pathfinding. Having a skill just not work should not be an option. They said they were looking into fixing it in March, it’s time to change the skill if the game engine can’t support it in it’s current form.

Fixing it sounds like too much work knowing Anet…

I would guess 1 would be avoided as then sword MH has no way of generating clones. I can see people complaining about 2 as it lacks the animation that gives iLeap away and makes it far more difficult to dodge/avoid the Mirror Images → Mindwrack burst.

Maybe having a clone materialize at your opponent like your suggestion but it takes 1s to before you can use leap or before it fully materializes to offset the burst.

The crit damage changes may be to accomidate the balence differences in pvp/wvw. All balence is based around the glourious esports yet crit damage can be so much higher in wvw – meaning burst skills become far more powerful than their pvp components when comparing the ratio of offense to defense stats other than crit damage.

Anet may be trying to tone down the burst so people complain less about 15k killshots, 8k backstabs etc (while burst is nice, we have to be realistic about how much shere burst can be achieved in wvw and how this affects the game as a whole, not just for people who want to ‘one shot all the noobs like a master assassin’. Ascended gear has made this even worse.

That’s true., critical damage numbers are way higher in WvW than in sPvP. They are not, however, the only big difference between both modes.

  • 40% condition duration food is a monster. It can be countered with another food, that’s true, but that gives only a situational advantage (when facing a condi spec), while a condition build will always get the benefit of those pizzas.
  • Runes of perplexity are insane.
  • Dire stats are ridiculous for any form of PvP

Berserker amulet isn’t the most favored choice in sPvP either.
Condi bunkers tend to work better for 1v1 and PVT usually offers a quite even battle.

idk, I think condi bunkerish specs (some of them really trollish, like pistol thief or PU mesmer, that can’t be competitive in sPvP because of conquest) clearly outperform berserker in WvW roaming.
Against PVT there might be some advantage, but they fit zerging just too good to also deserve a roaming advantage.

That’s true and a very good point. I can imagine the rage if + 40% got into pvp. At the same time, -40% food/+100 precision +10crit/life steal food is also deadly in the right build.

Condi bunkers are especially troublesome, especially Apothecary warrior… this is often due to imbalance in some defense mechanics (stealth, warrior passive regen) and condi application being harder to counter (mes clone death, necro marks, warrior pin down etc).

I have seen some very good players running in full zerk, I avoid it due to lag on Aus connection. The risk is how much of a target you become in larger fights. Soldiers (or knights) is still capable of putting out a lot of damage in pvp/wvw, people may want those big numbers in pve but with power as a main stat and building correctly you can still put out decent damage and survive any unexpected surprises.

Ok Grouch, topics which need to be brought up:

0) Warrior sustain.
- Healing signet + adrenal health HPS is too high for a passive that cannot be interrupted and poison has less effect on than other heals (requires perma poison rather than carefully timed poison burst)
- Zerker stance too long for perfect immunity, either reduce length or lower immunity to %. (Jonathan we discussed this ages ago…)

1) Warrior mobility. Mainly for wvw, warriors can escape anything with little risk in some weaponsets due to how their gap closers can be used to bridge distance without a target. Bring these in line with other gap closers and lower the movement spam. Having warriors in heavy armor outpace thieves is just wrong.

2) Condi burst is too high, ie can apply too many condi’s too quickly. Necro dumbfire/signet of spite, mesmer clone death traits etc

3) WVW revealed – why is this only 3s? PvE doesn’t matter, but wvw should use pvp balance for this, being a pvp mode. Stealth is far more exploitable in wvw than pvp (more targets to cnd, mobs to distract opponent with, more port spots, more z axis advantage).

4) Stealth is still too strong as it little counterplay and no disadvantage for being used. Thieves and mesmers can chain stealth for a long time and there is no disadvantage in doing so. Blocking attacks in stealth does not reveal. Shadow refuge stealth is too long.

5) Immunity traits - automated response and diamond skin, both hard counters to a particular build type. There have been hundreds of posts on this with your usual silence. Is it so hard to change them to -80% duration (does not stack with mel/food etc). Also, why don’t these have a buff to show it’s up? You expect a new player to guess why their opponent is immune to their attacks? Anet being so logical as usual.

6) Something needs to be done about ele base health/survivability. The ratio and dependency on having to build defensively when other classes don’t require it is just too far off atm.

7) Many thieves want to be less stealth dependent and more interesting, many non thieves want less stealth spam. Win win situation.

8) Can you like give rangers a bone or something so they don’t spam how bad they are in every thread? Maybe a tsun cat pet or something to distract them?

9) Particle effects? Why hasn’t this been fixed yet, I spoke with a dev ages ago about this who agreed it needed to be dealt with. Engine nades/bombs, d/d ele, guardians fire like skills, petting zoo’s, sigil of hydromancy/fire/geomancy etc they are all far too flashy and make it hard to focus on the fight with all the particle spam. Worse trying to spectate.

10) WVW guard stacks too strong - well mainly the guard defense ones. Getting +250 vit (2500 health) is a huge boost to many builds, especally for glass classes. This needs to be toned down – what about splitting it like the offense stacks to 25 vit, 25 toughness per stack? (Even then it should be less but this is a start)

11) Perplexity runes 6th skill having 8s cd is far too short for how strong an effect it is. This should be 15s or something, being able to acheive constant 10 stacks of confusion simply by timing two interupts properly is just wrong. Also these runes are messed up – the confusion duaration doesn’t work at all. If you wear the runes and a thief uses basi on you and interupts you, the runes proc on you and give you confusion for some reason? Fix it, this was reported 6 months ago.

Please stop avoiding the actual issues and address the problems. We don’t need to see your devs spend half an hour trying to locate a ranger skill, we need to know how you plan to address the issues that affect the player base.

Guess I’m a noob, but what exactly are Necro Minion Master Botters? and how would you know when you see one?

They move in strange ways/paths (for several reasons actualy), they randomly dodge in combat, they perform a very scrypted and clear not optimal or ‘on the fly’ cycle of skills (very easy to tell), they usually have random nicknames such as “Addkkrtyer” “Rtyufgjasmg”, etc., etc.

You just have to know how the program makes the character behave, then they become even easier to spot.

I’ve seen lots of these MM necros as of late too.

Today I learnt Cthulhu runs a MM necro…

I’m seeing this happen quite often on my Mes when using blink. Defiantly not immobilized/CC’d but can’t move at all.

Interestingly it happened once when I had staff equipped, using phase retreat didn’t do the usual movement – which is odd. Phase retreat can constantly glitch you in/out of maps yet it does nothing in this case… I presume fear would have the same issue.

This was a bug that Anet fixed up a few months ago, I can’t recall the exact patch. Supcutie’s post is very old.

Anet, if your reading this, timer and range indicator on portal would make life a lot easier for players new to the mesmer class…

+1 it is repetitive and annoying. I wish there was an option to disable novelty items effects (unlimited tools, this) so they just work like normal items but unlimited. Knowing people spend real money on these it shouldn’t be too much to ask…

I was a little frustrated at the ascended armor patch as they released not only ascended armor but special ascended back pieces – which require cloth. If they required leather it would have lowered the cost of the back piece and made it far more accessible, especially to light armor classes which need so much silk.

I would guess the next ascended backpieces will require leather, maybe also making the ascended leather items more expensive in terms of mats required. Unless another ‘trade mats for rare items bags’ scheme is implemented…

The recipes for silk ascended upgrade thing cost far more than the other items, so there is going to be a constant demand for larger quantities of silk compared to the other components. Also it’s required for all ascended armor sets iirc, which adds a lot more demand.

Even if the ‘rushers’ are finished, if it takes over a month to make ascended light there will still be a lot of people in progress. Especially knowing it was released just before the holiday period.

I don’t understand, these would be huge buffs to the mesmer. The only thing that may hurt would be moving blade training, but this wouldn’t mean much as deceptive evasion is being moved down to compensate.

If you want to tone down PU condi mesmers, I think torch 4 needs to have the CD increased. Traited it’s a stealth every 24 seconds, but as a 4s stealth once you use it, it’s only 20s before you can reuse it. It may not sound like a lot on paper, but that increases the stealth uptime dramatically compared to other weapon sets. The trade off has always been the torch phantasm (5) being useless, but that also needs to change. Also changing PU to a boon every 2 seconds would lower the sustain a bit.

Dodge as soon as you are moa’d. Try to put some distance between your opponent and you before using the escape. Take note if they are using a pistol first for the stun (they won’t likely have another stun available).

Mesmers have been nerfed pretty constantly, they have received a couple of small buffs recently (more to less used functions than anything class changing other than IC change) but nothing that would make them anything like what you said. It’s a class which requires focus to fight 1v1, but I wouldn’t say it’s harder to fight than a decent thief/ele/engine etc.

Are you sure it’s not just a case you have trouble fighting them so are more likely to remember such fights rather than an overall recollation of your roaming? If you really are having trouble, wouldn’t it be better to ask for advice on how to fight them or atleast state what the actual issue is? I know a few people on here would be likely to help out if you have questions, but will also ignore you if you just rant on about a class you don’t know how to fight.

Btw, Moa is normally a really bad skill. Outside certain situations it isn’t likely to be used unless you annoyed the mesmer, they are trolling or they don’t have the best grasp of the class. As a mesmer main I would love so much for that to be removed and actually replaced with something usual…

Just to add to the above, dedicated shatter can require quite a trait investment to pull of the burst (10 in dom for mw damage, 20 in dueling for clone generation, 30 in illusions to increase shatter effectiveness) plus utilities (mirror images required for burst, often portal for pvp) and zerker amulet… doesn’t leave a lot of room for mistake in higher levels of play or versatility when faced with a heavy condi meta.

Around the time condi’s started to become more dominant mesmers were nerfed in a couple of key functions which was helping the build in pvp. Shatter is definitely a good build, but don’t forget how many mesmers rerolled theif or left the game around this point, which hasn’t helped at all.

I can sort of see shatter coming back, but only when a couple of tankier specs which can put out a lot of damage/condi pressure while having such good sustain are toned down.
