Carrots, and the Means to Obtain Them.

Rewards are tricky because they could encourage behavior like tanking to get a more favorable match, and/or server stacking.

Even skirmish rewards would likely result in this behavior.

The first thing that should happen is adding stuff that would encourage more participation – an ascended equipment vendor and better WVW specific skins.

I agree with this person. If you do server rewards it will be a mess of musical servers and what WvW needs the most is people spread out and fighting each other. Not stacking a server and blobbing around PvDing. Honestly at this point I say the population is too weak to even support server based match ups even with linking. Make 3 teams like an ESO where people choose their side and fight. Stack a team? Enjoy a queue and since your not in the game mode; you’re not earning the sweet rewards such as the ones listed below.

Ascended gear – Why is WvW the only game mode where you cannot earn ascended gear when it is almost required since you are fighting other people in ascended gear? You are sending people from a dying game mode to go play in other game modes so they can compete at a high level. That is dumb as hell.

Armor skins – Look at the most popular PvP games right now. They are all about collecting pretty/cool skins. I’m sure you can make a light, medium and heavy set every month or two for people to earn before the news to come out. Make them available for a limited time to push the urgency of earning them before they’re gone.

Gold – It costs money for food and oils and mats to make new ascended sets and you’re not making enough in this game mode to support that. Again making people who want to play optimally go to other game modes to compete is dumb as hell. Why not an end of campaign bonus ala ESO’s to give a boost to WvWers wallets?

All these rewards should be gained based off of individual contribution and multipliers given for enemy presence on the map.

A full queue on the map for all factions? x2.0 multiplier. This is where you want to be! Yes, objectives are going to be harder to take, but defense is rewarding you greatly and when you do cap a point it’s going to be worth it.

High to full pop for at least two faction on your map? x1.5 multiplier.

Medium pop for at least two factions? Standard reward gain.

Out numbered buff for two factions on the map? 0.5x multiplier. Seriously… spread out or consider a transferring.

I love this game, but I just don’t play it anymore because there is no fun to be had in WvW due to lack of players/good fights and that is the game mode that kept me playing for the last 4 years. So, I’ll keep doing the PvE stuff as it is released and blow through that with friends in a day or two then shelf the game while spending my time and money in a game that has an active siege game mode (ESO currently with an eye out for Camelot and Crowfall) while wishing GW2 would fix my favorite game mode.

Something MUST be done about the RP in DR

This whole thread is pretty pointless if we’re being honest.

Is Anet supposed to enforce a rule that RP must be done in a new RP channel? Is that RP channel on by default? What makes you missing your friend’s /wave more important than a new player going “Well, I guess no one RPs in this game.” because we’ve hidden all the RP?

Only fixes I see for this “issue” is the two I suggested earlier and the ability to click on names if they are using emotes to be able to block them since I know /block can be hard sometimes.

Plus, emote channel is the most likely one to get spammed. And not by RP’ers. I can’t even recall all the times I’ve been in LA (where I spend a lot of time) and I just get a 3 minute wall of grey text saying “XxInsecure Player xX is busting out some moves. Some sweet sweet dance moves” as someone repeatedly starts and stops dancing. Because reasons I guess.

All the more reason to QoL the emote text to include clickable report/block names, like with /say.

And Miku’s suggestion of a separate channel/command is spot on. Those who are interested will keep it, those who aren’t will do the smart thing and shut the /rp channel off, while keeping /emote so they can see some game notifications. And those trolling the channel will be obvious, and thus easier to report (with clickable names in emotes).
It also does give legitimacy to RP as a play experience. If left on by default, it could signal interested players to finding roleplaying spots, and those who aren’t interested in hearing all of Rata Sum making out can unclick the channel and not worry about regularly blocking people.

So would this RP channel be a zone wide chat, emote 2.0 or what?

The RP channel would not do a single thing to prevent the issue the OP is talking about and if anything might make it worse since it might result in more RP since it will make organizing the public and non guilded RPers a lot easier.

So I say make the channel if Anet wants to, but lol if you think it will be used for actual RP. /say and /e is where it will always be unless of course Anet goes full potato and bans it and then we will see a mass exodus of RPers. I’d probably jump off a roof with my pants on my head thinking I could fly too since in that world everything is kitten backwards.

1 – Bring down the emote range to /say.

2 – Give an option to disable custom emotes (/e /me).

Why anyone would have emotes on if they are not an RPer is beyond me. Friends still do the “Hey! Over here!” wave on your screen so you know they are waving at you and you don’t get “Silver Invader laughs” spammed 20x in WvW, but you do you. I’ll be over here enjoying the game and RP.

For example because guildies and friends always greets me with a /wave and I always have something open on my screen (TP, bank) if I’m somewhere like the Terrace so I never see the animation, but I see the message.

Turning off emotes is not an option for me. Those two fixes would fix all problems.

Those are the best solutions. I spent all of 10 seconds thinking them up so you know they are good!

But honestly the way RP works (a lot of people are clueless so sorry if I’m repeating known stuff) is we need to be semi public. If we are not we die out. Just like any aspect of the game we have turnover. We also need our own little sandboxes to play in. Public sandboxes that others can join us in, but if we had just one big box it would be chaos and unreadable.

We can hope Anet will do those suggestions, but in the end they are not too keen on throwing RPers a bone. Though this is more of a non RPer request… so I dunno.

Turning off emotes is an option since it is literally in the chat settings you just choose not to use it like I choose not to go private and let my community die off. You could also just ignore me and my kind. I won’t be heartbroken.

An RP channel won’t do anything besides be where people go to troll or at best organize to meet up to RP. I’ve seen RP channels in other games and they are always exactly that. RP will never happen in them since it is how some else mentioned. Stacy and Joe might be at a tavern, Rob and Burt might be at the Seraph HQ and Linda and Rachel are in a house across town. Those pairs do not want to hear the conversations of the others. Not because “Grrr… RPers”, but because it gets hard to try and sort through dozens of posts when your character wouldn’t even be aware of them since they are not even in the same district. Now let’s actually use the real size of what a zone like DR would look like during prime time and it would be an endless unreadable stream of text.

Not happening.

I use /e because that is literally what the command is for and has been in many MMOs before and after GW2. This will not change, but do not despair! I have come with solutions.

1 – Bring down the emote range to /say.

2 – Give an option to disable custom emotes (/e /me).

I’m an RPer in an RP guild that I would not trade for all the loot in the world. I do also have a mesmer I can use if that is what the group needs, but I would be a novice at it. I am pretty chill in game and will not suffer elitism or strict schedules.

With that said, I’m a pretty awesome player if I do say so myself, have been playing since launch and can be serious when it is time to get stuff done. I have raided in other MMOs with much success and really just want to start raiding in my favorite MMO.

Banono.4597

@TheDarkScion – What Fhaeris said may sound like elitist crap, but it is exactly what you are going to find when you get to endgame PvE and Spvp. No raid is going to take a thief when they can fill that slot with someone who can do every job a thief can but better, unless you make the raid yourself and they are okay with semi carrying you along. Also for fun, if you want to hear the most QQ in your life team up with another thief and queue up some PvP. Chances are your team will literally quit if you do not switch classes before the match starts.

I feel that since we are the stealth “gank” class (mesmer does it better though…) that we are the ones who get shafted because of all the crying. DP thief use to be something feared; now DP thief more accurately describes how we’ve been getting screwed from both ends with each patch. Players cry about getting ganked, so devs nerf the thief class and stealth (this is the DP) while everyone else gets stronger.

It’s a crying a shame with how things are for people like us who main the red headed stepchildren of GW2, but hopefully we’ll get buffed and those who stuck with it will get rewarded. So use daredevil because it is awesome and get your ascended gear and pray that the balance that is coming soon will make us viable again. Otherwise do that Fhaeris said and reroll now because we are dregs of the game.

I have been trying to get my raid on with my thief, but so far all I’ve gotten is “lol good luck!”, “Just quit now.” and “You are so brave!” when trying to find groups to do VB. On my chrono people seem to trip over themselves trying to get me in their raids. I have groups who pick me first when they are about to go in, but as soon as I say “Can I take my daredevil?” I can hear them cringe over TS and those are the polite ones who do not outright laugh.

Am I naive to think Thieves/DD are not in that bad of a place? Are we really so awful that a well played thief is still worse than a a facerolling scrapper who has 50% of his buttons not working due to all the drool he has deposited into his keyboard?

Can we please get an elite thief/DD to make some videos of them just kicking kitten in the raids so that maybe just maybe we can stop this notion that my favorite class is useless.

Alternate Ways To Get Ascended.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Banono.4597

Ascended gear is expensive and burn you out IF you are trying to craft it fast.
Take your time crafting the time gated materials, get gold from whatever places you want (dungeons, SW, TP flipping, whatever) and before you notice you’ll have your ascended set.

I’m not talking about me burning out since I straight up I refuse to craft. It is boring to me and just like there are people who won’t step foot into a PvP arena; I will not craft. I tried it and I hated it.

I’m just saying there should be other ways of getting the gear. If there were I’d be logged on right now doing it to get ready for HoT. Since there is not I wear exotic armor and use exotic weapons only logging in to RP with my guild while I wait for the expansion. If for any reason A-Net forces ascended gear on me without another way of obtaining it I will move on to other games.

It just really seems silly that crafting is the only way to get BiS gear. One way of getting sure? The easiest way of getting it? Awesome. But the only way? dumb.

I don’t care about a gear treadmill, power creep or any of that, in fact that sounds awesome. It will give us players something to work for, but can we please get a reasonable non crafting alternative to getting the gear?

Currently unless RNGesus has blessed you to the point you are his pope you will most likely have to craft your ascended set and that is it. The drop rates are insanely low and for BoP that most likely will not have the stats you want it is just not a viable method.

Currently the only method to getting this gear is very anti social (mess with a trains farming and you will see this first hand) and brings about the dreaded MMO burn out that leads to people either quitting or going on long breaks.

Everything in this game screams “play how you want!” except this one area. It is awesome you made crafting something people can get a real benefit from and I in no way want to take from them, but can we get some sort of alternative for people like me who refuse to craft due to finding it a loathsome and boring chore?

I purpose adding to ascended gear as the next tier to vendors that sell exotics. Make them require crazy amounts of dungeons tokens, fractal, relics, laurels and badges of honor so that crafting is still the fastest way to obtain your set, but please ArenaNet give us options here.

Banono.4597

The solution is simple, make ascended gear have the same drop rate as exotics from the same sources exotics drop from currently.

Solves the WvW issue, the new player barrier, and you will be able to more easily mix in stats to your current ascended gear you lost from trait lines. Plus, if you hate crafting, your issues are solved as well!

Win, win, and a ………………….WIN!

That works.

If they were smart they would have a variety of ways to get the gear that promotes group play such as Spvp, dungeons/fractals and WvW. Right now the only way to get the gear is to go loner/farming train to get gold/mats and then go off to a crafting table and level up that which seems to get most people nice and burned out so that by time they get the gear they are ready for a month long break from the game.

Make it purchasable in the TP, I flat out refuse to level crafting. Or gimme a dwarf, Lineage II style.

And with the random Ascended drops, selecting the weapon doesnt help if you get stats you dont need for your main, or do I have to switch main and alt’s position? So, let me ask what’s the use? You don’t need it, and you can’t sell it…so it accumulates dust in the bank.

I’ve played this game since launch and have never had an non-accessory ascended piece drop. I would be happy if I got some random stat I didn’t use just so that I know I’m not cursed.

If they change this at least make Ascended gear buyable on TP. I hate crafting…

Make it buyable, available by spending tons of dungeon tokens, badges of honor, fractal relics or laurels, end a reward tier in Spvp, achievement points or any other method that is not crazy RNG drops or crafting.

This game has so many “play as you want” systems in place yet ascended gear is locked away behind crafting and I know I’m not the only person who hates it enough to never bother with it.

I honestly do not care if Anet decides to make a gear treadmill and adds a new tier with each living story update, but for the love of all six gods, make them obtainable without having to torture yourself crafting or praying to RNGesus. I refuse to craft especially in this game. The second I am forced to; I move on from this game.

Over at the RP site we have a thread (http://www.guildwars2roleplayers.com/home/page/1/m/2737230/viewthread/22508737-waypointing-while-incombat) that has divided a lot of people and it is all based on head canons and different interpretations of waypoint lore and it would be awesome if we can have some clear knowledge on this so that we can put it to rest.

First off, how does one activate a waypoint? Is it something you can do from anywhere?

Is it monitored? Is there some guy in Rata Sum making sure people are cleared to use them? Can they tell if someone is in a fight and if so do they lock like the game mechanic?

Are there actually waypoints in dungeons and other bad people places? I can see this being an issue about game scale vs actual lore based distances.

If I missed any questions feel free to throw them in and hopefully we can clear this all up.

As it stands, this change makes me question the integrity of the gem store. If I can’t trust that things I buy with cash will maintain at least a recognizable semblance of the functionality I purchased, then why should I ever spend more money to support the game? I understand the Terms & Conditions indicate that all content is subject to change, and we accept those terms every time we play. But you took something that was functional and removed everything I liked about it (customization and unique looks that could not otherwise be obtained with combat armor) in order to make it do something that I never needed it to do (function in combat). In any other part of the game, that’d be disappointing but acceptable. But this was part of the cash shop. It would have been nice if the community had been solicited for their opinion before such a major alteration.

Well put.

As an RPer with a in-game closet of just about all the town clothes Anet has ever made I too will lose faith in the gem store if this change goes live.

Out of all the outfits I have never used a complete set on my character. Always a mix of them and with this change I will probably just stop using the town clothes all together and be one of those people who RPs their character always in armor (Not that there is anything wrong with that).

“The Shuttered Gate in Lion’s Arch is said by its tengu guards to lead to the Dominion of Winds, but isn’t likely to lead directly there as Lion’s Arch is not directly next to the Dominion of Winds”

Also if you look at the map the Wiki provides it shows that the two are no closer to each other than Lion’s Arch is to the Priory or DoW is to The Grove.

Like Gabby above said, I just don’t see them releasing a new race/zones without some leaked info coming out weeks if not months ahead.

I am in the same boat as you OP and it happened right around Dec 10th when they added the Ascended gear.

In game I do a bit of everything; WvW, RP and dungeons with friends. In that order.

Dungeons with friends is exactly as it has always been. An easy 30 min past time where we blast through them with pretty much no problem as we gear up alts or do them just for fun.

RP is what it is, but is suffering from player burnout and fewer and fewer of the people in my guild and on my friends list are logging on. Which makes for a less than optimal experience due to all my character friends, allies, and enemies not being around and story arcs being left half finished.

WvW being my go to game mode has been the saving grace for this game for me, but now with the new tier of gear I have lost the drive to keep playing it. I can still kill most people just fine in my exotics and I am sure some math whiz can spout off the numbers and tell me the new gear is not even noticeable in Zerg vs Zerg combat, but it still bothers me.

My favorite thing about this game was the play as you want and not get left behind attitude I felt in the beginning . No longer did I have to suffer a dungeon long after I was bored with it, no more were the days of being in a huge guild full of strangers so I can get in on the raids to get a chance to roll on the piece I need to go do the next set of raids and no longer were the days of getting ROLFstomped by someone in PvP due to them grinding the game mode and having more of the special PvP stat than I.

But now after GW2 has added a whole tier of gear only available through crafting, I want the old system of MMOs back. I’d rather run a dungeon 30 times then spend 30mins crafting.

In the end I can’t change Anet’s game. So, in light of all this and the fact there won’t be an update for a month I have picked up another MMO and have been having a blast. Maybe one day they will go back to the “play as you want and not be left behind” policy they had back in 2012, but until then I got other things to do.

I think most intelligent people use different builds for zerging vs roaming.
If you have a group build, you shouldn’t bother trying to take on folks in small numbers.

You are not doing anyone (least of all yourself) any favors if you try to do one or the other with the wrong build(s).

the thing is there is this strange misconception that if you’re running away from someone (either because you have better things to do/you were just catching up with the zerg or guild group) apparently you’re some kind of baddie who’s committed some mortal sin. like wtf if i’m catching up to my guild because i just got on or whatever, i’m not gonna waste some time on some thief who will do no damage to me and to whom i will deal no damage to.

i won’t duel with my tanky warrior who is built for support and cc, especially against classes who shine in dueling.

tl;dr: a lot of people seem to think that you need to be roaming/be ready to duel ALL DAY ERRYDAY and if you aren’t you are WRONG WRONG WRONG and BAD BAD BAD. fml

I agree.

I constantly get the angry rant party invites from people saying “Bad thief…. 1v1 me.” cause they are kitten that me and a few server-mates killed them while they were roaming on our way back to the zerg or while running supply.

If I want small scale PvP there is a whole game mode that gives me exactly that. Where I am spec’d for such things, but in WvW I am spec’d to give my server the best chance at winning and couldn’t careless if stranger on a server I will never be on thinks less of me for declining their duel or kiting them into my friends.

Reset nights do get queues (EB can be up to a couple hours, TCBL 30min, others 15-20mins depending on who it is.), but I think that is the case for any server that is T2 or above.

Imagine the queue time for season 2 if the rewards for season 1 was something like, an asceded armor chest? That would have ended WvW….

While I don’t think an ascended piece is warranted, but I need to ask; How is a influx of people supposed to be the end of WvW? Are you on a T1 server perhaps?

I am on BG

Thought so.

How do you explain the WvW reward?

Cause most servers need more people.

Here’s what I don’t get. Are you people new? WvW has always had less the stellar rewards to investment in it. This should come as a surprise to no one who has actively been doing wvw for any amount of time. I’m more shocked that the chest actually has a decent amount of dragonite in it.

I’ve gotten a number of exos and two ascended items from regular WvWvW rank chests and I’m just at Rank 72…

RNG likes you.

RNG is pretty much asking that guy to have his babies… I am rank 260 and best I have got was a 1g exotic named Arc.

I think I said this on map chat like six weeks ago; “Anybody know what the rewards will be aside from the finisher? Cause knowing my luck I will not bother with the meta and everyone who did will get a free ascended weapon of their choosing, but if I do it will be a handful of greens and some boosters.”

I completed the meta and was right. So, you can all blame me for the rewards.

(But for real, guys, this shouldn’t be totally unexpected. We are the red headed step children of the game. I WvW for fun knowing full well I am not going to be rewarded like the drones in the champ trains.)

Do you get WvW reward w/o completing meta?

Maybe this is just another way to push us towards Spvp…

“Hey guys wanna try a new build? Spvp has you covered!”

Why do PvE players need stat bonuses? It’s not like ANY PvE content is so hard that you’ll need it.

I dont know about that, i was spamming one for a good few hours, nearly had to press two…very stressful.

Spoken like a true PvE’r who’s never stepped foot in WvW? (except to blob grind out season 1 living rewards of course).

I on the opposite think that your attitude is totally wrong.

You make it sound like gaming was an epic task, a daily struggle to survive, like you were on a holy crusade for awesomeness.

But this is just a game. A video game. There is nothing epic to it. Nothing you can do or make in here is of any importance. Nothing what you did in a video game before is of any importance either. Same stands for what I did in video games before (your not the only adult in here, although you like to make it sound that way). So trying to make players think they are special when they go out day after day to farm champions is just lying to them.

Games should be about fun, having a good time with a couple of friends on voice communication, some laughs. That’s all what it is about. And that’s why this whole “work” argument in a video game is completely wrong.

Amen!

Video games are nothing more than a fun waste of time. To say otherwise is foolish.

I never understand the people who say “You gotta earn it.” like it some how makes you a god among gamers cause you spent 100 hours grinding something you did not enjoy to ‘earn’ some stat bonus.

I feel this game is in danger of slipping into old MMO ideas such as grind forever if you want to be on par stat wise with the top players. When we were told during the prelaunch hype that is something the were against.

Just looked it up and the wiki and sure enough. Thanks for the tip, Jerron.

Now if I could picky I would love an option to buy them using WvW gained currency since the drop rate is crazy low.

I was more less talking about the new armor coming out.

If I could get them like the trinkets in WvW that would be perfect for me.

Edit; It might just be me, but I do the world bosses nearly daily and have yet to see someone link or say anything about getting a ascended piece aside from Teq which is a ghost town.
