Outcry for Change

*1.) Content designed for groups only

No. Some content is designed for groups. Most is soloable. The story is soloable except the very last step (and that only because of bugs). Hero Points are partly soloable, some not. Exploring is soloable. Events chains are the usual GW2 fare: you can play alone with others (because you simply cannot avoid other players helping you – and why should you?).

Not only is your statement false, it is also misleading, in that we play a Massive Multiplayer game. This category of games hints strongly at doing something with other people.

There is no disclaimer in the game that warns you about this.

The disclaimer is the fact that GW2 is a MMO.

My opinion: Don’t change anything here.

2.) Hero Point difficulty needs to be toned down

No. They are HERO challenges for a reason. They give you 10 times HP than the Tyrian ones, and it is only natural that they are more difficult for that. Sadly ArenaNet has already turned the difficulty down with some hero challenges. Please do not water down them more. If people do not like to play with other people in a MMO, they play the wrong kind of game.

4.) Mastery system needs a review
The system is a total and catastrophic failure, forcing people to grind in silly ways just to do the content they like. Example is fractal mastery and people being unable to get enough agony resist because the fractal vendor with +7 infusions is tied to a generic experience bar and they didn’t grind out enough CoE P1 to get it. This system is so monumentally bad (starwars NGE level of bad), I have no idea how to “undo” the damage it wrought.

The mastery system is ingenious. New masteries should (and as I understand it: will) be introduced to keep up the sense of endgame progression. There is no grind necessary. It is possible for the impatient, but not necessary. That said, I think they should nerf the cof p1 farm in the near future. It is not healthy for the game. My opinion: Do not change the mastery system.

5.) Rewards need to be better
There just needs to be better rewards to incentivize players into doing content like Dragon’s Stand and Tangle Root’s meta. Sitting there for 3hrs for a box of greens is not going to cut it anymore. Even the professional reviewers ripped the game for this. Rewards suck, they have always sucked. Now that content is harder and takes more time, that needs to change. It’s silly how many people are in SW still chest running because the HoT rewards are so terrible.

I don’t think the rewards need to be better in the sense of “being worth more gold”. But it would be nice to have even more map specific rewards which are account bound (not tradeable). When I do an event circle in Auric Basin my inventory (max bags, all 20) is usually full. And only after I cleaned it up I can open the countless containers.

6.) Dead content needs to be put into a incentivizing rotation
Do you see people in dry top? I don’t. Good luck getting mawdrey or amberite weapons now. Something needs to be done to funnel people into dead zones to complete the meta. Make a weekly quest with a good reward and have that quest go and complete the meta for these zones to get players to do this content.

That would be a good idea.

7.) Get a better balance team

I think they do a good job. Not that the balance is perfect: there will be always balance issues, that comes with the nature of the beast. And shortly after HoT dropped it can’t be expected that all professions are balanced in all game modes with the elite specs. But all in all I am cautiously optimistic.

8.) Get your class roles and visions straight
WTF is going on with healing? You state how zerker meta won’t cut it, introduce healers, then fill the game with timed bosses that enforce even more zerk? Whhhhhuuuuuuuuttt? I just head desk so hard looking at this.

I don’t get your point here. If the raids are designed correctly (that means: making healing valuable), you can’t survive without a healer, just because you need berserker or sinister gear.

9.) Your communication with the community/fanbase sucks, fix it

Just now the communication is very good. The 400 hp issue was not an issue for me, but sadly ArenaNet gave in to the protests, and they did it very quick while communicating openly about it.

Same here. I have all items for the treasure hunt achievement but every time I go near the event region for the Orrian Pearl (Straits of Devastation, Shark’s Teeth Archipelago) I find a broken Broken Spit event. The broken thing is, as described above, that you cannot attack or otherwise delete the replicators.

OP, the German forum thread you quoted was more about that PLAYERS are insensitive. Running around with arms stretched out and a Snoopy pilot cap on your head making bwwww noises with your lips has nothing to do with the Germanwings flight which ended so tragically. But PLAYERS who cry “German Wings!” and throw themselves from high places in Divinity’s Reach – those are insensitive.

I don’t like the April Fools joke either. But not because insensitivity of ArenaNet but because it lasts longer than 10 minutes. It was fun for a short while, but then I wanted to switch it off. But that is no problem for me, there is still a galactic empire in Distant Worlds Universe waiting for my tender but strict care…

Gem Store updates have never been predicated on live game updates/patches, so whatever may cause a delay in updating the Gem Store may have nothing to do with whatever is delaying the upcoming game patch.

On the other hand: it may. Take for example SAB. If the patch containing SAB is delayed it would make sense to delay gem shop updates containing SAB items. Otherwise it would spoil the surprise.

Disclaimer: the example made above is completely grabbed out of thin air.

But I believe….

Everything you linked is something tied to tradition or holidays, living story, content updates not ordinary “patches”. I never said that they “must” release patch on tuesdays, but they always done that get your facts straight.

When they release content as you described they do it via a download which alters the files in your game directory (or adds new ones). This procedure is commonly known as patching. How one is able to state seriously that content updates aren’t patches eludes me.

That said I am happy that ArenaNet takes its time to deliver a decent patch, even though I really hoped to experience the first person view today…

Is the daily thing on the right side of the screen viewable to lowbie characters/new accounts? I can’t remember and I also leveled before all this new leveling stuff occurred anyway. Because if it is viewable I’d say that’s a huge flaw and certainly not something s/he made up.

It’s not viewable on level 3. You have to go look for it.

That is not correct. I bought a new account two days ago. I got the wiggly login chest and then a screen popped up showing me which dailies to do (the same as Astral Projections). Of course I knew how to get to Lion’s Arch and then to EotM and had fun there (after that you can use the shortcut even though I was still below the NPE level) but for a new player it may be confusing. That would not be so bad (after all finding out things is part of what I like in games), were it not that the NPE was introduced to lessen confusion.

Hm, I seem to play another game than you who tell us GW2 is grindy.

I bought a second account months ago after they introduced the NPE, just to check that out. And I hold it strictly separate from my main account (no helping). I played about 15 hours per week on it. After about 3 weeks I was at level 80 with that account’s main character. After 4 weeks I had a full set of exotic armor and the most used weapons. Two weeks later I had the ascended trinkets. And that without feeling that I grinded too much. Just the opposite: It was fun. Except trait unlocking, sigh…

Like today, Fractals and Exotics. No time for a fractal, no money to level up anything to craft an exotic, and forgive me for not giving a flying flip about either.

To craft an exotic the easy way:

1. One character should learn the artificing craft (level 0 is sufficient).

2. Have some essences of luck (2 rare OR 4 master OR 20 fine).

3. Craft one exotic essence of luck.

Easy and very, very cheap. Your reward is 3 globs of ectoplasm, at the time of writing more than 1 gold worth.

And here a suggestion to the general topic:

Add a fourth kind of dailies: “General”.

There are to be four general achievements which can be done every day, like daily dodger, daily kills, daily aoe (joke) and so on. They should be achievable in any game mode.

These general achievements have no reward but they count for the daily achievement points.

This way, people can get their achievement points without going out of their way and get EXACTLY the same as earlier (only easier). Ok, that is not true: they get 10 AP instead of 5.

The other achievements are for those who like to do them as a challenge and/or for the reward.

Edit: Sorry, just read Lishtenbird’s post who suggested more or less the same…

In the Old system, I got about 50 Laurals and Big Coins from daily+monthly. Those are important materials only can got from daily/monthly. Now I don’t think I can get more than 20 per month………………..

In the old system you got about 40 × 12 = 480 laurels per year.

In the new system you get 55 × 13 = 715 laurels per year (if you choose the laurel alternative on the 28nd day of each cycle).

I don’t know what you mean with Big Coins. Mystic Coins? They are at 3 silver per piece if I remember correctly. One run of citadel of flame path 1, and you are covered for a month…

Nice suggestions. While I like the new system your suggestions would improve it even more. But as one of the posters here already suggested: If you randomize dailies don’t do it by account. Do it by server (for example: four different sets of dailies, Deso, Gandara and some others get the first set, Seafarers, Far Shiverpeaks etc. get the second set and so on). The probability is very large that friends are playing on the same server, so that they share the same set of dailies.

Oh, and 5 or 6 dailies per game mode (instead of now 4) would not hurt either.

Sure, the new ones are a load off the backs of AP grinders, but they require full attention and very specific side-tracks to finish them…

What did I do today?

o Mining some ore in Frostgorge Sound and my home instance. Specific side-tracking: I had to choose Hoelbrak for my home instance instead of Divinity’s Reach, which I normally do (which in itself is weird because my main is a Norn).

o Did the bell choir as an activity. Specific side-tracking: None. I would have done that anyway -for wintersday and because I like it.

o Did the kyhlo-pvp farm with my level 10 elementalist once (about 7 minutes). Specific side-tracking: yes. I had not much time, otherwise I would have played wvw instead and automatically fulfilled an achievement or four.

Full attention? Not really. Very specific side-track? Yes, somewhat (pvp).

But I had accidentally done even more than 3 daily achievements with it (my kyhlo farm led to two achievements, sorry…). Besides the 10 AP I got also orichalcum ore and other ore from the mining (other rewards were more or less ignorable).

All in all, from my point of view it was easy as heck and the “specific side-tracking” was about the same I have to do when after an hour of normal play the 5 dailies of old weren’t completed. Because that happened, too. It is not that ALL old daily achievements were ready to be completed while playing normally (story dungeon completer, fractal completer and such spring to mind).

On a side-note: Some time later I did Claw of Jormag. Yes, because it was in the daily list. No, I did not felt side-tracked. I had already gotten my 10 AP but I thought: hm, good idea. Haven’t done it in a long time. In that case the new system worked as intended, I think.

World bosses in daily

I’m a huge fan of PvE, but for my dailies I just go to PvP…

I’d rather have that they make the daily bosses in 2 categories:
Kill a world boss (any given event on the list)
Kill a mega world boss (karka, tequatl, mega wurm)

I really like your idea of spliting the world bosses on two types.Right now the daily for them is to specific.

I like this idea, too. May be combined with the idea of another poster to increase the spawn frequency of the daily world boss?

Hello Gaile, you know, i’m not a native english speaking player, so sorry for that
i just want to talk about the way i played the daily before the patch
i have now 10 or 11 level 80 chars
i buy a new slot and create a new charakter and gave him a 20 level roll
gave him new equip and played the daily, due to the events gathering, rez and all 6-8 PvE daily rewards the new character rise for 1 level and i can do the daily with my new charakter by just playing it for 10-20 Minute
After doing it i just switch to my main Charakter and play as i want.
with the new system its nice to get laurels and co for doing nothing but just log in
but with a new charakter its not as easy to do the daily stuff, some points are in just level 80 restrivted areas and / or in regions the charakter is not able to walk
the xp reward is not as high, as it was before the patch, if you do all PvE daily you just get a half level
so in my point of view, the new system is crap and i do the daily with my main without buying a new charslot in future.
and if there is someone who will say “its easy, go to PvP or WvW”, i did not play PvP before and i’m not willing to do it, just because of the daily. WvW, i played it a lot, but play on a german server and allways against SFR with a 24h manpower….. you just get blue eyes……..
so i hope, you will change the system a bit, so i can do this stuff, by just playing it where i want and with a charakter that i want

(Note: I like the new system in general)

I can see your problem and I share it in a way. I used to level new characters with dailies up to level 10 and then did the keyfarm-thing (playing personal story, open a blc, rage at God Of RNG and delete character). That doesn’t work anymore – at least not in the old manner. My plan is now to do the dailies which I like with any character I like, collect the xp scrolls and then make a new character and feed him the xp scrolls and tomes of knowledge I get from dailies and login rewards. While that should work I readily admit that it is not the same. I liked to walk through Queensdale, Wayfarer’s Foothills and Caledon Forest, doing an optimized daily achievement run. On the other hand, now I have more time for wvw, killing Seafarers…

Solution to the new dailies

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Claudius.5381

Claudius.5381

There have been a few people posting here and elsewhere that they enjoy the new dailies that everyone else hates. These people say that they like the focused nature, they like being told exactly which activities they should be doing with their time each day, rather than having to choose from the thousands of options that would otherwise be available. I’ve come up with what I think is a good compromise.

I am one of those people who prefer the new daily system over the old one. But not because of a focused nature. I like the new system for 2 reasons basically:

  • It allows me more than the old one to play how I want. Because I felt obligated to do dailies before to get the laurel, a currency I need for crafting ascended gear and for ascended trinkets. Now I can skip dailies altogether without the feeling I miss something essential.
  • In case that I am just having nothing better to do (which is rarely the case) I have now a list of things I could do with extra loot. Nothing overwhelming but a nice additional option.

I don’t need you to define my goals. I am perfectly able to choose my own. I am glad that ArenaNet has added to the catalogue of things I can choose from and removed the feeling that dailies are mandatory.

I like the new daily system.

If you only wanted laurels and the daily reward chest before, you had to complete 5 dailies. Now you have to do – nothing (save logging in). Because laurels and the rewards are distributed over the 28 day reward table now. That is easier.

If you wanted 10 AP, you had to complete 10 dailies, and could not remain in one game mode but had to do pvp and/or wvw. Now you have to do only 3 dailies. They are more specific but they also reward you with an additional chest, and these are – while not outstanding – quite nice. And you can do your daily in one specific game mode. That is better.

I am very glad about the changes. Because I like wvw I am now able to do most of them there. But I am not averse to win one pvp match with a guardian (you can always do the battle of kyhlo farm thing for it if you don’t like pvp) and I do like silverwastes events. While I have to change my routine I can still do the dailies while I play what I want. The great thing for me is: I don’t have to. The most important daily reward for me is the laurel and that one is free now.

I am really craving for a sequel to GW1...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Claudius.5381

Claudius.5381

I bought GW1 three months ago and play through it now. I played GW2 since last open beta weekend. I decided to play GW1 on the side because the Living Story season 2 made me curious about the lore behind it and I began to feel a greater appreciation for the background and the past of Tyria.

I bought the complete set of campaigns including EotN. So far my experiences with GW1 are mixed.

It is great to experience the fall of Ascalon. It is also great to see Piken’s Square as an actual location and not only as a server name. It is nice to be able a real healer again (Monk/Mesmer in my case).

I have mixed feelings about the skill system. There are a lot of skills, but many of them are of very limited use. The crafting system is rudimentary. You cannot jump. More importantly: you can’t even slide down a tiny slope and must walk really long to go around obstacles. Quests are old fashioned (though they usually fit in very well into the background) and you must walk, walk, walk. And in between you kill trash mobs for uninteresting loot. And then you walk some more. In an instanced landscape, only your henchmen, my one rl party member (a warrior) and me. Did I already mention that you have to walk a lot?

I can see why GW1 was a good game in its time. You know, when we had still to invent tv and the summers were warmer, when there was snow at christmas, the young ones behaved better, furniture was made by hand out of real wood and plums were sweeter than today. But I am so, so glad that there is GW2 now. It is in my opinion superior to GW1 in nearly every aspect, including skills, weapons, landscape design, “quest” design etc. The only feature I really like in GW1 so far are GvG battles.

Otherwise the sequel to GW1 is right here.

I like this episode for the story. It was too short, though. I do not measure that in time only but also in plot progress. We got three flashbacks out of four. Flashbacks support a plot but they are not plot.

I disliked killing the centaurs. Yes, I know, I only reenacted history, but I would have preferred a simple cut scene there. I personally was on the side of Wynne and the centaurs. Games are about enjoyment and I did not enjoy that particular fight.

The jumping puzzle and the corresponding cave, on the other hand, are awesome. It was the best part of this patch for me.

What did you want out of GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Claudius.5381

Claudius.5381

What did I want out of this game?

I wanted a game without gear tread mill. It should not have a subscription fee. It should be possible to play it even with my aged reflexes (ideally with turn-based combat, which my former MMO had). It should be pretty. It should have no item shop things which you are more or less obligated to buy.

I got all of it.

Why are you here and not in any other game?

My last MMO was Atlantica Online, a MMO with turn-based combat. It had an obnoxious item shop and a steep gear treadmill (I can only smile reading posts here about how grindy and pay-to-win GW2 is – those posters have lost their connection to reality, or so it seems to me). When that game was taken over by Nexon it got worse and worse. So I looked for an alternative and GW2 was the new kid on the block. I was (and still am) not convinced of the new Unholy Trinity, I liked the Holy one better. But all other alternatives were worse.

I like Tyria because the designers were brave enough to invent a world and its lore which is different from the run-of-the-mill fantasy setting (elves, dwarves, humans, orcs). To each his own: you, OP, go play LotRO, I continue to play GW2. I think that a fundamental change like introducing elves would be a grave mistake for this franchise.

I kind of understand your point with buying gems. But you can always buy missing gems with ingame gold. For example if you want a permanent mining pick for 1000 gems, buy 800 with your money and pay 42 gold for the remaining gems.

Living Story season 2 is a leap forward from “kind of a mess with shots of brillance” to “solid delivery with a really well done episode 5”. The two new maps look smallish but are very different from the old maps: more to do, local currencies with unique rewards, players can work together map-wide for a common goal. Especially Silverwastes is very nice – but the chest farming should be tuned down a bit.

Wvw is sadly stale at the moment. No serious changes there.

Simply halve the crests given out by chests. That would force farmers to participate in events because otherwise you will run out of keys.

Silverwastes – Poor reward design

in Living World

Posted by: Claudius.5381

Claudius.5381

Generally the rewards in Silverwastes are ok but I agree that the chest farming has to be tuned down. OP’s proposal is a bit radical, though. The main problem is that buying keys does not depend from doing events. That is because chests give the currency to buy keys themselves.

To remedy that it should be enough to decrease the number of crests a chest gives. Halving it sounds like a good first attempt to handle the problem without making the farm completely impossible. It would lead players to participate in the events about half the time.

All other rewards could stay the same imho.

then I needed some time to figure out the fragile mechanic – but that was a welcome challenge. Because if you figured it out you had not to overcome an additional reflex hurdle (where I am not good at). It was reasonably paced and felt just right.

A very satisfying experience. If the next episodes can keep up with this one I see a bright future for GW2 and me. Only the botched trait unlocking system remains…

Will level cap raise?

If they raise the level cap and don’t introduce a mechanism for keeping my exotic and especially ascended gear at top level, I would leave the game.

Game Feels Too Empty

I seem to play a different version of GW2. In the last weeks I visited each map in GW2 open world (due to map completion) and every map was quite populated. I play in the early morning and the late afternoon, EU data server.

Which world you are on does not matter (much) because of megaservers.

Rebound, which MMO do you like more than GW2?

It does not help (me, at least), if you say GW2 is bad. It would help more if you tell me which MMO do you like more. If you don’t like any MMO though you may be in the wrong thread.

For those who do not find GW2 the best MMO:

Which MMO is better?

Please don’t name MMOs which are out of service (CoH) or not published yet (they are all better, as it was with ESO, Wildstar and so on). And please don’t name GW1 – I am just testing it myself.

That is a serious question for me because I do want to have an alternative mmo to fall back on if I have to take a break from GW2.

Here are some MMO which I tried already:

  • Tera – combat is clunkier, graphically worse, boring quest system, tried for 25 hours.
  • Rift – worse than Tera, tried for 6 hours.
  • TESO – nice storytelling, acceptable graphics, weird phasing, I will try that again if free to play, played for 20 hours.
  • Wildstar – does not run well on my computer, graphic style not my taste, combat could be good, weird story, weird (but interesting looking) skill system, may try it if free to play, played for 30 hours.
  • World of Warcraft – ugly graphics, super boring quests, boring combat, gave up after two attempts which did not last more than 5 hours each.
  • ArchAge – after 2 hours of soso game play bluescreen of death (first time ever on my computer), had to deinstall, too afraid to try again and not enthused by unavoidable open world pvp.
  • Neverwinter – foundry great idea, nice levelling up process, graphics ok, combat system better than average, like the setting, evil item shop, grindy end game, played for 150 hours.

As you can see I did not invest enough time in each game (except Neverwinter) to judge them competently. My conclusion so far is that GW2 is the best MMO currently available. I would really like to get arguments which other MMO surpasses it.

"Network Error"

It started about half an hour ago. I get continuously Network errors when I log in to my level 10 character in Divinity’s Reach. Either while logging just in or when I try to enter the personal story step “On The Mend”.

Server: Desolation
Country: Germany
Internet Provider: Deutsche Telekom

Other Internet services run fine (including but not limited to ArchAge).

Edit: Posted it, tried again – now it works.

For the time being I will continue to play. I am more miffed about the new trait unlock than about the gem conversion thingy (but only because I don’t use it), but GW2 remains a good game. I like the Halloween update because I did not have the opportunity to play it properly last year. And I am curious how the LS will continue.

I wonder though, how such blatant blundery (trait unlocks, commander tags for 300 g for each colour, entertaining cows instead of feeding them, blockwise gem gold conversion) could ever have passed QA…

Lets talk about the new Gem conversion [Merged]

Please: a custom exchange button, where I can put it every amount which strikes my fancy (and I have the gold for).

My personal grief is the trend here. First ArenaNet broke the tier unlock system. Then they decided that it is less confusing to entertain a cow than to feed it (on a farm!). Now they seem to have overlooked the fact that the gem store world does not start with 400 gems (and that there may be leftovers, especially after a discount weekend).

That points at a certain “thoughtlessness” (don’t know if that is an English word). And I am starting to become afraid of GW2 patches…

It would be better if the champion bags of champions who come in existence because of scaling up are hold in “reserve”. The game counts them internally but awards them only if
the event succeeds, together with the event rewards (for example in a wiggly box above the mini map). The champions who are “naturally” there, without being triggered by the presence of many players, drop their bags as usual.

Whats your story on why you started GW2?

I played 2 Korean MMOs before GW2. The last one was Atlantica Online, a turn-based MMO. While the combat system was great (at least for people who like to play turn-based games), the publisher wasn’t. And I grew tired of the gear spiral. Every time when you caught max level and got all equipment to the highest level a new patch raised the max level and the grind started anew. And when I was really fed up by an especially greedy decision of the publisher’s marketing team, my son showed me videos of GW2’s beta.

From then on we theoretized, planned race and builds, and even participated in the last two beta weekends. I played and play continuously while my son comes back every now and then. I am so glad that there is no gear progression to speak of. Even though ArenaNet made some questionable decisions, especially the trait unlocking, I still think that GW2 is the right game for me.

And that in spite of being not turn-based…

coverage/population imbalance:

Another mechanism to approach the problem that servers with good coverage “run away” too fast would be to erase the lowest third of the tick ppt scores per day per server.

Currently in a 24 hour time period there are 96 ticks. For every server the worst 32 tick point results (the points earned in the 15 minute period of the tick) are erased. Only the remaining 64 “best ticks” remain for the score.

A server with great coverage loses more points than a server who cannot cover all times, giving them a better chance to fight back.

A modification would be to count stomps/player kills seperately (no deleting of points here). Reason for that would be that a server with lower coverage offers less opportunities for the more populous server to get stomp points because there are less potential victims to stomp on.

So, each server keeps their 64 “Best” Ticks, is that what you’re saying? Because that makes score gaps caused by coverage vastly worse than they are now! A server with 8 hours of massive coverage that their opponents don’t have might tick @ +500 several times during off-hours, while during NA, if even 2 of the 3 servers have decent coverage, it would be nearly impossible for any of the servers to match that +500 tick. This system greatly favors servers with better 24/7 coverage.

No. Simplified example with only 3 ticks:

Big server A: 500, 350, 380

Small server B: 110, 200, 180

Even smaller server C: 80, 140, 130

Currently the scores would be:

A: 1,230, B: 490, C: 350

My proposal would lead to:

A: 880, B: 380, C: 270

As you see the gaps are smaller. And I chose an extreme example with a very strong server A and 2 very weak servers (in these cases my proposal helps the least because these weak servers in the example are weak during all 3 ticks).
