What is the point in transmutation stones?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Coffee.7058

Hi all

As the title says, I’m asking what is the point in transmutation stones?

From my understanding, this kind of functionality is normally introduced to assist for reasons such as (but not limited to) balancing the economy. For example, some ascended recipes are time-gated so that the ingredients required don’t suddenly fluctuate wildly in price on the TP.

When it comes to transmutation stones however, I just don’t see the point? Changing your skin has literally no effect whatsoever on other players, or even the game environment itself. It’s an entirely personal thing that neither effects your stats or your game-play.

Therefore, what is the point in limiting us? It’s especially strange to consider in a game with so many skins available, and where one of the main rewards is in the pursuit of such skins.

Anyways – all thoughts and comments are welcomed. Perhaps I’m simply missing something.

EDIT: I’ve used the word “stones” rather than “charges”, which has rightfully been pointed out. They were renamed to charges when the wardrobe feature was released. I’ve spoken out of habit here I’m afraid.

EDIT 2: General consensus is that charges are simply a money-grab, or one of the games “carrot’s-on-a-stick”. Those are pretty pessimistic terms for sure, but that’s what comes from such vitriolic responses. I should have expected as much really.

Money — things do not run on mom and dad alone.

Not the OP, but I’ve been experiencing the same problem. I’ve filed a support ticket, and posting a screenshot here of the error that keeps popping up.

This is how mine started, now it takes me an attempt or 2-3 to login and then, the TP wont load ever.

P.S.
None of the above info has helped.

I tried filling out the ticket but it kept telling me I was missing info when indeed I was not — so I gave up on that page.

I had TP open as I was buying/crushing ectos when I started to get a DC error (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT) — I kept going just clicking ok on the error as it didn’t effect me at the time. Now, I cannot connect to game sometimes, and when it does it takes a while.

My browser works fine and I flushed the cache/history.
I performed a repair on gw launcher.

TL;DR Cash shop and TP don’t work for me anymore.

P.S.
Tried to make a ticket for help, that made me want to pull out my hair in all honesty. I filled everything out that HAD to be filled out (Including my Serial Code) and it still says I am missing something.

You grind trains for gold or buy low sell high. The first option is easiest.

PvE Servers. Which is best for beginners?

Hey, so i’m now starting to play GW2 on Crystal Desert. There seems to be not a lot of low level players and it also feels empty. Which servers are best for beginners?

Trust me on this, leave the server. Playing on a high population server will make your experience 100% better especially while leveling and you will be less likely to quit the game. I am speaking from experience having playing on three low population servers and 2 high population servers.

Go here:

https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en/na/wvw

Pick a Tier 1 server. Or even Tarnished Coast. I personally recommend:

Blackgate
Sanctum of Rall
Jade Quarry
Tarnished Coast

I am on blackgate right now and anything after level 20 and you will be alone. Very rarely do you every see anyone. It was this way at launch too but not this bad.

Only lvl 80 in Group or leave....

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Coffee.7058

Hey guys,

I wanted to compare my feelings about following topic with other players.

A few weeks ago I started a new Character …. at lvl 35 I wanted to go into Dungeons and then everything began…. I got kicked out, insulted etc.. when I dared to join a Group for AC at lvl 35….

It took me about 2 Hours to get together a Group for AC to enter it…!!

In my honest opinion many people have to change their mind in this game….
Of course I didnt join Groups which inteded to Speed-farm it…Just normal runthrough groups…People have to accept that its a Game and that profit is not the most important thing.. It should be fun which is bigger if you share it with others….

To put it in a nutshell: STOP kicking lower levels out of your groups, just because it will take 10 minutes longer…. Lets be a good community and be friendly to everyone!!!

What do you guys think about that?
What is your experience about that topic?

Thanks in advance

Blame Anet tbh.

They have designed this game to be so grindy and gold making unfriendly — these are one of the few routes in which one could make money. I remember them saying they hired an economist for the Tp — no comment.

You try to farm outside of dungeons or champs and you will get diminishing returns — yet the bots in orr say other wise.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

But they are meaningful as long as anyone has interest in them, and several people still do.

I dare you to find me one person in the game who cares about PPT. And when I say ‘cares’ I mean, would continue to play for PPT even if all rewards were removed. No champion bags for killing lords, no WxP, no ascended materials, no experience, no karma, no gold. Absolutely no incentive but the PPT. Find me that person, and that person does care about PPT.

Because I’m rather inclined to think that the people upset about GvG are more upset about having their karma trains stolen away.

Well today marks one year since I deleted my thief and created an engineer. And I find myself shaking my head that I have only now realized yet another glaring flaw in the engineer profession. The tool belt is even more useless if you play a turret engineer. I know some will argue with that, but I honestly fail to see how they can do so with a straight face. How can you sit there and honestly tell me that the tool belt is fine, that its skills are worthwhile, when turret engineers can’t even use their tool belt skills?

Please, give me a rational explanation why I should slot the Thumper Turret for the stun break tool belt skill, when that skill gets replaced by “detonate turret” the second I place the kitten thing. Well, I was already reluctant to play a turret build, being merely sick of kits rather than legitimately interested in the skill type, so I guess it is no great loss. Anyone know any decent gadget builds?

Do not use ANY turrets…EVER.

I know this sounds dumb but in the current state they’re garbage.

What are your feels of having a Healing Role?

Coffee.7058

What are your feelings of having a dedicated healing role in GW2, once again like GW1 and other trinity games have it?

Whats your opinion on Healing role?

Explain why you hate the healing role?

===============
From what I read so far against Healing role, usually the argument is that people dont like waiting for healers for group play.

well thats not really fault of the Role itself, but the community in the game. So I never really saw that as a reason to hate the role and eliminate it, when it was never bad. just the community was.

Also since Dungeons and Events in GW2 can be done without it, I dont see the harm of having a dedicated healing role. Also would be great for WvW to counter zerg’s anti-melee design.

In a real MMO you HAVE to have meta or you will have chaos. Look at every MMO that was a BIG success. They all had at the very least a need for heals.

The biggest thing that turned me off to gw II was the lack of a gear grind and no meta. I still purchased the game as I knew I would find some fun in it till the next MMO that did have what I enjoy (wildstar).

You say that as if chaos were a bad thing. I love chaos. Even A.net described dungeons as organized chaos.

So no gear grind and no trinity are the 2 primary reasons why people play GW2 and you don’t like teh game because of it ….. maybe you’re playing the wrong game. Nothing wrong with that. If wildstar is more your thing, go play wildstar

Plan on it.

Remember, don’t go by the forums to see how people like this game. Most of the people that go to gaming forums only go to complain.

I am really enjoying this game. Its true, i have only been playing for a month and half but it takes up a good amount of my time. Most of the time i have no idea what items i need to get but the fun part is figuring that out.

When i started i had no idea what the LS was. I didn’t start realizing what was going on till the end of the Queen’s speech. This time i was way more involved with Tequatl and have been having a blast. I spent all my gold on exotic Valkryie armor for my Ele to the point it took me a few days to get enough gold to finish it. At that time i was broke but then i was able to beat Teq each of the last 3 days and i’m already back up to 10g witch is good because i haven’t been doing any other farming since i’ve been busy.

So to sum up, the more i learn, the more fun it gets for me.

GW2 is basically pretty fun.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Coffee.7058

Coffee.7058

I think sometimes in the intense debates about stuff on this board, which I sometimes participate in, this fact does get a little lost. There is a lot about GW2 which degrades the fun, or distracts from the fun, and indeed it’s why I stopped for a few months, but getting back into it, that’s my big takeaway – so long as you can find the right class and spec for you:

GW2 is basically pretty fun.

Just messing around in the world, doing zone completion (and all that entails), zerg-surfing in WvW (which I keep accidentally calling RvR – it’s not yet as good as DAoC, but could be one day), trying out new dye looks, new gear appearances, doing the new world bosses (except Teq – he’s got potential but is too frustrating), and so on – it’s really quite a lot of fun in a way that most MMOs are not, and I really hope they can continue to make it feel that way.

There is some stuff which probably should be fun but isn’t quite there yet – dungeons are a bit too dependent on detailed pre-knowledge, Fractals can be very fun but can be a tad tedious, depending on which you get, sPvP is a bit too same-y and faceless (it’s good – not great – good though), the Living World stuff is a bit too “GIT IT DUN!” because of the short time scales, Dailies are almost fun, now, so that’s an improvement but could do with more, and gearing, sadly, is little fun outside PvP, because elsewhere it’s just zerker or gtfo. More fun doesn’t necessarily mean more rewards, either – rewards support fun (and prevent you having to do anti-fun things to compensate for “wasted” fun time), they rarely create it – but it does mean being careful about them.

But again, I keep coming back to how basically fun the actual, underlying game is. how fun the abilities are, how it’s fun to combine them, to defeat normal enemies, veterans and champs, how it’s fun to dodge abilities and so on.

You know what other game was like that? GW1. Yeah, GW2 isn’t as awesome in that regard as GW1 was after two expansions, but it’s getting there. So I think the devs are, in a lot of ways, on the right track. I really hope the new skills and their acquisition help with this fun (hopefully involving the open world, not instances!).

Couldn’t of said it better myself.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Coffee.7058

Coffee.7058

I don’t get how some people can enjoy running a champ farm all day. Yes it is good gold and loot, but it seems so boring.

The only reason why I think people would do this would be because they want to get that final piece of gear or skin. What happens after they get it? They quit the game I would think if they are just PvE players.

Anet cannot do anything about this. If they changed it to loot certain champion once per day people would quit because they are so invested and used to this easy stuff. It is no wonder why people say they are quitting. They are getting their skins so fast that its doesn’t even put any stress on the brain at all.

I hate football, baseball, and pretty much any sport one could name but it doesn’t mean many other folks wont enjoy it.

GW 2 was advertised as a fun, casual MMO.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Coffee.7058

Coffee.7058

I remember when this game was being advertised as being very casual and that you could jump into any aspect of it and have fun. I feel like Arena Net has drifted away from this in many ways. First, it was ascended items. We were told we would get our end game gear and never have to worry about it in the future. But no. More and more ascended items keep coming out. Next, it was spvp and tpvp and their attempts at making this so-called casual, fun mmo a certified esport. Now it’s tequatl. Arena net. If you think a random casual that plays this game for 2 hours a week can still have fun and remain in the swing of things through these changes, you are wrong. (I’m not even in this category, I play about 12 hours a week, but a few of my RL gw buddies are.) They simply can’t keep up.

Your games design is lovely. It’s beautiful, yet complex. A casual has a hard time retaining all of these complexities, while at the same time maintaining a grind to get better gear. A year ago, we chose a lower tier wvw server so we could do small group stuff and not just run around in a huge “competitive” zerg ball simply because it’s not fun. Cool you were world 1st teq kill and top wvw server? Well numbers are an amazing thing in this game aren’t they. Too bad that takes almost no individual effort (I transferred away from Blackgate, and have also killed teq.)

Please Arena Net. Stop going down this slippery slope that every mmo seems to go down. You guys are different. At least I think (hope!). We want challenging small group stuff that we can PLAY through now, with our current gear. That’s why we chose you. We love the gameplay. It’s time to cater to your beautifully crafted game and stop the useless progression by zerg game.

You see a sign “Hot food served here!”. You enter, eat and find the food isn’t as advertised and doesn’t live up to your expectations. What do you do?

A. Continue to go to said food joint and try to enjoy a product you don’t like.

B. Go online and give them feedback in hopes they will change their food to fit YOU (As advertised), and not the masses.

C. Find another restaurant that better fits your appetite.

See how silly it’s to come on and complain and even try to give a company feedback?

Sure, you hope they see it and change to better fit you but in reality they have spent millions in marketing and they know how to run their game better than us, the gamer’s. Speak with your mouth, shout with your wallet.

I didn’t like AoC when I bought it at launch. Do you know what I did? No, I didn’t bother to run to the forums and give them game changing ideas to better what could never be. I un-subbed and never logged in again because like many things in life you have other choices to choose from.

It doesn’t seem like MMO’s fit you — try another style of game because <<O=grinding something ALWAYS, that’s half the fun for many.

I would disagree. There’s no real need for grind in MMOs and that’s why MMOs now try to minimize that. Speaking about that though GW2 is very not grindy.
I, myself, never thought that I could ever afford a legendary. Saved up some money. Started working towards what I called “a poor man’s legendary”. Took me about 3 months. Because I didn’t buy everything at once I did not even notice how much money I’ve spent. In those 3 months I probably got and spent about 500-600 gold. You CAN get it. Just focus on it and work towards it.
Speaking about that though I do disagree with the karma nerf. For one thing now you get zero karma for running dungeons and that’s the exact activity that I enjoy participating in.

Yep, not for you.

1. I will probably never have a legendary, now that you’ve nerfed karma. I toyed with the idea pre nerf, but imagine my surprise when I started getting karma vials from completing dailies a few days after I spent most of my karma on temple armor. I will not grind 2000+ events and/or dungeons. I left that other MMO precisely because of this type of treadmill/grind.

2. I will never have ascended trinkets. I’m sitting on 62 laurels, but I am loath to spend them because I have multiple characters and I never know what wonderful changes you will implement next. I don’t want to be caught in a situation like I was with karma points, where I spend most of laurels and then you implement some change that makes them more difficult to get or they become necessary to obtain even better items. In addition to this, I only do dailies if they correspond to whatever I’m doing that day. I don’t log in to do chores, ANet.

3. I will never have ascended weapons. That is, unless the required mats build up in my bags through daily activity and leveling crafting isn’t cost prohibitive. As it stands now, leveling that one crafting discipline is cost prohibitive for me.

4. I will never have ascended armor, for reasons stated in point 3.

5. And because of 1-4, I will never participate in WvW because being at a constant disadvantage when playing against other people isn’t fun.

I log in to have fun, ANet. Not to do daily chores, not to grind, not to chase more powerful, and required gear…I log in to have fun. When I bought your game, you led me to the impression that the best gear would be easy to get at level 80, so I could spend my time doing whatever I wanted. Looks like I was wrong.

Has your philosophy regarding the type of player you’d like to retain, changed as well?

It doesn’t seem like MMO’s fit you — try another style of game because <<O=grinding something ALWAYS, that’s half the fun for many.

Bullcrap, it’s a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. It is an RPG, within a massive world of other RPers, nothing more, there is no requirement for grind or farming for the genre to apply.

"Rewards"

Ive sort of come to the conclusion that, like Blizzard, Arenanet is conditioning us.
Warning: a bit of a wall.
TLDR; We are conditioned by Arenanet to play only for rewards, and not for the sake of playing. This is because they pump the game full of rewards, checklists, achievements, minis, and shinies. They use this word “reward” often in order to trigger this type of behavior.

Blizzard brainwashed a generation of MMO players into thinking a themepark MMO with endless gear grind, and a paid subscription is the way to go for the MMO industry. Many MMOs tried to follow their footsteps and failed. Miserably. So we come to, what we thought/think, is a unique game in GW2 and people wanted the same thing. They wanted verticle progression. Arenanet gave it to them. They wanted more. They wanted more rewards. Rewards, rewards rewards. We cannot have a patch without being enticed by rewards. You cannot read an article about GW2 these days without the use of the word ‘rewards’. Everything is centered around rewards. If you aren’t being rewarded, why bother? We can attribute a lot of this mentality to WoW, in a sense, because in WoW…we wanted verticle progression, gear grind, and rewards.

Arenanet takes rewards to a whole new level. And this is bad. They reward you for a lot of things. They reward you and shower you in currency. The more rewards you get, the more you want to play, right?

This whole idea that a game must be centered around “rewards” is creating a Pavlonian society where you guys (the playerbase) salivate whenever arenanet uses the word “reward”. If the article doesn’t have that word in it, suddenly it loses meaning. Have we all become the dog in Pavlov’s experiment?

A few months ago I created a thread about instrinsic vs extrinsic rewards. Playing for fun vs playing for reward. A lot of good points in both camps were made. People agreed with me that we no longer play for fun, but for reward. People also said that rewards ARE fun to them. Thats OK. But don’t you think those people are falling into the Pavlonian way of thinking?

For those of you that don’t know who Pavlov is:

Pavlov performed an experiment where a dog encounters food, they begin to salivate. He began to associate this with a bell sound. Eventually whenever he struck the bell, the dog began to salivate even if no food was present.

So..what is my point here? Arenanet has associated every patch and all content with some sort of reward system, and they use the term frequently. So frequently, that whenever they use the word ‘reward’, we as players begin to salivate and want more..and more..and more rewards. Its becoming a vicious cycle.

I believe most of you(myself included) have lost the purpose of a video game…to play for fun. I believe Arenanet definately has lost sight of this. Otherwise they would create content just to have fun. Not to check off achievements, and be rewarded. We would simply be enjoying their content, rather than rushing to complete achievements, or get the next ascended slot.

Its a vicious cycle started by Blizzard, and perpetuated by Arenanet. Blizzard conditioned us in WoW. Arenanet is doing it again with GW2.

Don’t believe me? Try going to another game after you have had your complete fill of GW2 and try not to expect the game to reward you for everything. I bet for a lot of us, it will be difficult.

If anyone responds to this, try to respond by not going to the opposite extreme in the case. Yes, rewards are part of game. I understand that. Yes, we all want some form of progression. I understand that. This isnt the age old verticle vs horizontal progression argument. This is just laying out how we are being conditioned by this company to expect rewards, because without a reward we do not have fun.

Games need rewards at some level, but not to the extent to which arenanet has gone to. They have removed a lot of the fun of the game and replaced it with something “virtually tangible”…if those words could ever go together.

Welcome to the MMO genre?

Am I the type of player you want?

Yeah, if it wasn’t for Dulfy you all would have to actually play the game or worse (GASP!), search for things!

*Trembles

If it wasn’t for Dulfy I would spend all my time searching for a needle in a haystack. Instead of “gasp” play the game.
The game is not very good at giving information related to the game in the actual game.

I never knew about the site till I googled it for champ trains. So, how did I get by on my own?

I am sure it does a great service to most but it also holds your hand. The things you eventually find in the game extend your enjoyment and reward when you do figure them out.

I have always hated the guy who bought the puzzle and set the box up to wear he could see what the puzzle would look like complete — but to eaches own.
