Okay, so I JUST rolled engi before reading all this but…. if turrets attack my target (instead of, say, a weapon rack), does this mean I can unleash all of my toolbelt, use some CC, drop turrets, CC some more, Overcharge and unload a buttload of DPS on a guy?
Again, pretty new to the engi.
Also, I read in a leak that the rifle turret will now stack a 5 or 8 second vuln per shot instead of bleed.

Are you kidding right now?

I think you guys are missing the point where the mace shield combo has a ton of stuns, plus other things. Waste up their stun breaks with those, use one to get him to sit still, then pop Skull and 100b. Yeah, the other person would have to be just a little newer… but lets face it. 80% of people are going to eat that 100b. Not everyone on here is just that good.
Does this mean it should be nerfed? Idk, I think this is just a build that people should expect and be prepared to deal with. Like spirit ranger is… wait. Like spirit ranger was. That got a little nerf to it.
What irks me is that as soon as a build comes out, it gets nerfed. People need to learn to counter instead of just QQ until big daddy Anet nerfs the hell out of people. Ranger is a good example of this.

Pet dmg to get raised with Ascended tier?

No idea about your pets, but mine got 27% dmg nerf, not 50%.

And tbh, as much as I don’t like being nerfed, I’m happy with anything that lowers pet share in my total dmg. If we get nerfed too much, sooner or later we will get buff, and there is hope it will be ranger dmg, not pet.
And before talking kitten about how our dmg is weak, look at sword dps WITHOUT pet.

How much more nerfing can we get though? Not sure if you have been keeping tabs, but we’ve been nerfed every patch that touched us save one that I can remember. Guardian hasn’t been touched really, and Warriors can do everything now.

Looks great? Nice. Thanks.

That whole special attack sounds like what a kid would dream up during playtime to make his toy the coolest… not to mention how gamebreaking that would be.
If you want to be so special, just ask for special animations on existing skills. Like 100blades with twilight causes a black hole effect in front of it, like your tearing the space time stuff. kitten like that.

Any dungeon builds for a lvl 80 Ranger?

in Ranger

Posted by: Conix.4589

Conix.4589

I think I need to state that the build up there is mostly a pug running one/WWW one.

With my full Zerker set up, my character hit nice. Not anywhere near most other classes, but nice. My pet was dead almost all the time, so he had no DPS output.
With this new build, I hit the same as far as power goes. I don’t ever really crit though. BUT my pet stays alive, and is able to land a crit on almost every strike, so in the end I feel like I do just as much damage, if not more, as a zerker build.

I already stated that if you are running with a good group you can do DPS, but if you are going to do that, just play another profession. The ranger can’t compete. You have so many evades and a few good regens at your disposal, that is what you should be doing. On another class, a bunker build is not good in dungeons. As rangers we can go bunker, without nerfing our pets in power. So it doesn’t hurt. That last skill trait tree buffs the pet a lot.

I ran full exotics with zerker stats and scholar runes. I do up to 40% extra damage (10 for health, 10 for stamina, 10 for flanking, then the sigils) and the damage is still subpar to other classes. It’s just how it works because of the pet. Sure, zerker gear is great for those first few PvE dungeons and fracts, but you WILL be beat out by every other player still. You (the Ranger) can NOT do the DPS that other classes can. On top of this, they can survive better than you. So its a double F you to us.
Though spotter is really nice, most groups don’t care enough about it to lose out on a Warrior/Guardian/Mesmer. Healing spring is great in stacks when everyone blast finishes, but a run with pugs and it comes useless. Go Knight’s if you want that Precision, but I use Soldier’s right now.

By buffing your pet, you put out a constant stream of DPS, while picking up the DPSers who will fall. This way, you really lose none of your dps, Because your pet is still putting it out, and no one dies.

My group gets those speed run times with this build, so I see no reason not to continue to play it. I never go down (Unless I’m running with randoms, and only after they all die) so that’s a plus. Can’t say that with my zerker build haha. Ultimately it comes down to what works for you.

New Player Advice

Conix.4589

As for profession, it is really about how you want to play. If you’d like to be on the frontlines and in your opponents face, then Guardian, Warrior, and Necromancer are good choices. If you want to be evasive and tricky, then Thieves, Mesmers, and Elementalists are for you. If you want to sit back and shoot things, then the ranger is for you. If you want a strange bag of tricks, then the engineer is for you.

Please, don’t ‘sit back and shoot things’ as a ranger… you’re not living up to your potential. Most other professions do ranged better than the ranger, so pick one of them. In open world PvE, longbows are good at max range only. In Dungeons, you will almost never be at max range, so just use melee weapons.

But as far as fun classes go, my favorites will have to be Ranger or Guardian. They just feel good. Mesemer is fun as well.

As far as race goes, just pick what looks cool to you. Racial skills are almost never used.

Any dungeon builds for a lvl 80 Ranger?

in Ranger

Posted by: Conix.4589

Conix.4589

I go with a 0-0-30-10-30 build. I use Greatsword always, with my swap being either Sword/WH or Dagger, and shortbow for those times that I need range. Found it better than a longbow in dungeons.

The greatsword has an amazing block (3 seconds, and blocks and infinite number of projectiles) on a super short cooldown. Also, in it’s auto attack you have a 1 second evade every 2 seconds. The 3 is great at covering distance, or making a quick escape. 2 is an okay burst.

Sword has 2 good evades, and dagger has a free one as well, so you can evade almost everything while your pet DPS bosses all day.

As far as gear goes, there is no point in going Zerker gear because your pet does not benefit from it, thus 40~% of your DPS does not get buffed from it. Your pet will die instantly, and you will never out DPS any other class that is even close to zerker gear. So just boost up your ability to live while boosting your pet so it can live and dish out the damage.

My gear is power, tough, and vit mostly. My job in a dungeon is to pick up the DPSers that drop while being able to regen my health back, so there is no lost DPS on the bosses. While I pick up dropped people my pet is still dishing out the damage, so there is no huge loss. It actually works better, because you don’t have to sacrifice much damage when a player drops. Just remember to switch out your pet if it is about to die, so you don’t have that huge wait time.

As far as skills go, the only MUST HAVE would be Rage as One. 22 seconds of stability, fury and swiftness? Alright! The rest change out depending on how I feel. I guess SoR and MT are great too have too.

If you get in a good group (say your guild’s group) then you can go more DPS, but then again, why play ranger?

If you’re looking for big numbers, check the other professions, ranger will never get a big number on anything other than a mosquito.

eles attumenet swap yet we cant control pet

in Ranger

Posted by: Conix.4589

Conix.4589

The point of this is that we would like more control over our pet’s moves. Why does my eagle cast swift every other move instead of DPSing? Why does my dog never knock down? I know he has it! Stuff like that. It would allow me to actually USE the game mech ANet decided to hamper me with.
Also, dodge. Sure, a random champ out and about can be easy enough to solo… but the harder ones WILL one shot your pet unless you trait. And that really kills build options for reasons I won’t go into here.
Even if they just made your pet invuln during your dodge, that would be something.

How important is pet choice?

in Ranger

Posted by: Conix.4589

Conix.4589

Sigh. There’s so much misinformation here.

Pets do not insta die vs bosses. They just don’t, outside of a few specific bosses with mechanics that heavily punish pets or completely suboptimal strategies on the part of the team. Even the squishiest pets(birds and cats) are able to stay up a reasonable amount of time vs most bosses, especially if everyone melees(since there is an AOE cap in stacking situations the pet often will not get damaged at all) and if you manage your pets well, switching often you can keep good pet up time vs most bosses. For Dungeons high DPS pets like Cats and Birds, or if your party needs fury, the Red moa are good choices. In some situations ranged pets are decent, but for the most part they shouldnt be used.

Please, please do not use Bears or Pigs for bosses because you think that Bosses will insta-kill your pets, if you really have trouble keeping your pet alive Drake’s DPS is far better, while also having significant survivability. Further, keeping your pet on passive in dungeons is frankly worthless, the best buff pets(Moas) are actually very tanky, and their damage is actually a bit more than you would expect while being able to keep up quite a bit of fury. If you keep your pet on passive you’re losing out on anywhere from 20-30% of your dps for no reason.

As to the actual question, yes pet choice is highly important. In dungeon situations, even fully damage specced, your pet is a significant portion of your damage and choosing to use relatively low damage pets is going to significantly hurt your contribution to your team. In WvW roaming or SPVP its often a good idea for instance to use a wolf for the CC alongside a cat or a bird for damage. In Zerg fights pet choice tends to matter a bit less, albeit its not completely unimportant, mostly because Zerg vs Zergs do legitimately put down enough AOE to kill even the tankiest pet.

So I would suggest not simply choosing a pet you like and sticking to it if you are interested in playing at all optimally (if you don’t really care about playing at all optimally then there wasn’t much point in making this thread I suppose)

Do you run dungeons with a bird? They insta-die. Cats? eh, maybe not all the time, but you keep the bear on the switch to give that cat time to heal up. I was talking dungeons. Almost every speed run ranger build in dungeons uses cats and bears. I use sword/horn or Greatsword and a longbow. With zypher the cat’s might to stack on top of the others, I can hit 16-18k and over in about 2 seconds, while staking 20 vuln, then I switch out and jump in with the sword, swapping pets as they need it. leap out on cool downs and repeat. If someone else can stack the vuln, just stay in there with the sword and use zypher with its auto attack, better DPS. Let the pet attack here. When you are away, bring the pet with you. I have full zerker gear, scholar runes, and exotics. Combined with my traits, I can hit for 35% extra damage. With that, pet DPS is negligible, even more so when they nerfhammered the crap out of their damage. Before the nerf, a pet might make up 35% of total DPS… after? Not even close.
look up any good and actually fast speed run on youtube. They are all done with bears and cats, doing that thing. It’s really all we have. I’m guessing your that ranger is the one that sits in a corner plinking shortbow’s 1 all day, not actually doing anything?
bottom line, we have our own blast finisher. We don’t need the drake (not that it is bad, just not a great choice in the dungeon vs other things). Birds use swiftness during fights, so they are out DPSed by cats, and they die in 1 good AoE. wolves are not good in a dungeon. Well, they aren’t bad, but their big draws don’t work. Brown bears are tanky, while having a good utility. Remember that the F2 takes forever and you’ll do well. Pop that a bit before you need it. Forgot about the red moa… but my warriors keep up max fury anyway, so I’d rather take the bear/cat combo. Guess that’s up to you.
But my first comments were to help you if you were new to dungeons, which it sounded like. I am assuming he does not know about stacking in dungeons either, but staking isn’t really fun either haha. Speaking of, I have to wonder if they will change that, it seems too big of an exploit…

How important is pet choice?

in Ranger

Posted by: Conix.4589

Conix.4589

Pets in PvE (not dungeons) are important. Hounds, Cats, Birds, and Drakes are considered the best. Hounds have a knockdown and howls, Cats and Birds are DPS machines, and drakes have a blast finisher as well as breaths. The drake used to be the Ranger’s ONLY blast, which was dumb because you can’t control it. Now we have the warhorn’s 5, and soon maybe the greatsword’s 2. Drakes and healing spring are good.

In dungeons, pets are useless. They die too fast to the bosses. If you want to, keep your pet on ‘avoid combat’ and use the ones that buff you. I use the cat that gives 5 stacks of might, and the bear for it’s condition removal roar. The birds are a good choice as well. Keep it out of combat. When you need a speed buff, just target something and have it attack. It’s first attack will be a screech that speeds you up. Just remember to call it back right after, before it actually hits something. If it does, you slow down to combat speed.

Also, if you want to attack a boss with the pets, use a devourer or spider. They have range, but they will be AoE’d anyway and die fast.

If you MUST use a melee pet to attack that boss, use a bear or pig. They are the only ones that can survive multiple heavy AoE attacks from a boss.

Conix.4589

WEB SITE: http://thealtruistic.enjin.com/home

OVERVIEW

To be altruistic is to put a high priority on the welfare of others, sometimes even above your own. With this guild, we hope to change the tired ways of other guilds. In every guild, a circle of friends reap the rewards of those beneath them. Essentially, everyone in the guild is a gold farm for them. With a little bit of democracy, we’ll put the power in your hands with votes and elections for leadership positions. Everyone will be given a clear path upwards in rank. Everyone has the chance to become a guild leader. Everyone contributes to the guild!

WHAT’S SO GOOD ABOUT THIS GUILD?

We have a rank system in place that gives you a clear and defined path for progression. We won’t play favorites here. If you are accomplishing your mission you will get rank, and reap the benefits of it.
We WILL NOT spend the guild’s gold on ourselves. We will use that gold to help members advance, based on their ranks. The gold you guys make will go back to you.

SO WHAT DOES THIS ACCOMPLISH?

This system guarantees that rewards will be spread out to those that deserve them. The guild’s funds and resources will be put to better use than just making the circle of friend’s gear better.
Also, with this system, YOU have a say as to the direction the guild heads. Want us to spend resources gearing deserving members to rule the WvWvW scene? Done. You want us to start focusing on PvP? Well, if that’s what you guys want. Maybe do a huge mat collection campaign, whatever. Bottom line, your voices will be heard!

WHY JOIN A SMALL GUILD?

We are trying to make a guild everyone is actually happy to be a part of. A guild where everyone feels like they contribute, and where everyone feels a part of the big picture.
We are still taking our first step. This is good though, as in these first moments you can have a lasting impact as to how the guild is structured. Our charter rules are still being worked on, and we’d value the input of anyone who has been guilds before. Either successful or those that failed, we’d like to learn from mistakes as well as accomplishments.

WHAT CAN THE GUILD DO FOR ME?

As of right now, there isn’t too much, but I’ll put what we can offer into bullets for you.

  • Teamspeak 3
  • Access to many crafting mats
  • Fair advancement system, no favorites here
  • Gear upon reaching lvl 80
  • Leveling assistance, as well as knowledgeable players
  • Stable play hours, without asking that you give up your life. Honestly.
  • Webpage
  • Events

WHAT WE ASK OF OUR MEMBERS

Members must be able to act like an adult. No spamming chats or being annoying consistently.
We would insist that you only represent us.
Treat each other with respect. That being said, a little fun can be had as long as no one is hurt.

AM I REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN GUILD EVENTS?

No, not unless you are of higher rank. Though you will be more eligible for advancement if you are seen to be participating in a large number of events

MUST I BE A HIGH LEVEL?

No, there is no level requirement. Anyone is free to join. To add to that, we are also not looking for any class either. We do wish to increase our high level members though, and if you are not there we will do what we can to level you. This includes powering you through story missions and making sure you have the mats to craft your levels up.

WILL THERE BE A TAX?

Although I understand why a guild would want a tax, we will not enforce one. Donations will be taken though. Maybe as we grow, we may need to include a sort of tax, but not straight gold. This is so we can continue to fund and gear our new members.

NOTE

If you have questions, PM me here or in game. Also, don’t worry about the questions on the recruitment form on the webpage. You can fill it out, or PM me to join. The questions are just designed to see where we should put you.

When is the next pet overhaul happening?

in Ranger

Posted by: Conix.4589

Conix.4589

If they got rid of pets all together, and just upped our damage, I’d be happy with that. Maybe the pets could instead be different ‘spirits’ of the wilds…. eh…. and they would grant us a different support option based on what animal spirit you had out. And you could have 3 or 4 at a time for the F# functions, seeing as we have no other way to support. Except spirits in PvP, but they are going to be nerfed and they suck everywhere else anyway.

Which Class should I play?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Conix.4589

Conix.4589

Guardian is a good class to play, always need those. Honestly, if you want to be useful without too much skill or thought put into it, play Guardian, Warrior, or Elemental. Avoid Thief, Ranger, and Engineer. The Thief has been hit hard by the nerf hammer, and is only good if you are super good, and it only has a handful of viable builds. The Ranger is better than people say, but also only has a few good builds and you have to be on top of your pet… because holy kitten they are dumb. Engineer is a hotkey clicking monster of a class. You have to know which kit to have, when to deploy turrets or elixers, when to swap out, memorize cool down times… ugh haha. Fun though, but a single slip up in WvW and you drop. I only played Engi to lvl 52 though, so eh.

WvW: Mildly Disheartening

in Ranger

Posted by: Conix.4589

Conix.4589

I don’t know why, but I’m having a pretty easy time killing things in WvWvW. I run longbow and greatsword. I use cats and birds. I’ll keep the bird passive, and when ever I need a speed boost, I’ll just click something random and tell it to attack then call it back real quick. It starts every attack with a screech that boosts speed.
I’ve got bezerk gear with scholar runes, and a lot of ruby stuff.
If I’m hitting random people with 1 on the longbow at full range, I’ll usually take out about a quarter of their health in one hit. With Hunter’s Tactics, Eagle Eye, Steady Focus, and Sigil of Night (if it is night) I get 35% extra damage and crits are insane. Before hand, it is easy enough to use Quickening Zephyr, the cat’s might boost, and Rage as One then hit them with rapid shot, the number 3, then 4 if they need it to knock them down and finish them off with 2 or 3 regular shots. If they aren’t squishy and running, and they start to get close, I loose a barrage right on top of me, then switch real quick and hit them with the greatsword’s 5, 3, then 2. Once the cool downs reset, I jump away with Lighting reflexes and switch to LB, hit them with 4 and about two more arrows should finish the job. I’ve slaughtered a guardian and warrior wielding legendary weapons (So I assume the rest of their gear was pretty good) this way. I didn’t mention the pets, because not much you can do with them. They die pretty insanely fast anyway. Just switch them out right before it happens so you don’t have a minute long cool down. Also, my build stacks vuln like a champ.
I use lighting reflexes to get out quick, then number 3 on the GS away from the enemy to get out of combat. The 5 and 4 works well at stopping a player in their tracks as well, and if they are extra squishy, the 2 will just murder them.
In Zergs, I’ll stay on the outside and blindside unsuspecting warriors for massive damage, and mesmers as well… I don’t like Mesmers… I’ll also switch the bird for the bear, and just keep pet swapping while using their roars to give the group might, and condition heals. Its a lot to keep track of.

But yeah, enjoying the ranger in WvWvW. I think people still think of rangers back when all the kids where pew pew pew with shortbow’s 1 and didn’t do anything else. Not even dodge.

My favorite build was a healing tank. I traited my mace to improve healing, while also making all symbols heal and larger. I would use Mace+shield/Hammer. The hammer can pound out symbols super fast, plus with the leap, you can stay on top of your enemys, along with the cc abilities.
When I need to stay alive, or use a heal, I switch to the M&S combo. The number 2 symbol on there would save me many times, because of my high healing stat, it would fully regen me in a pinch, and I would also slam it at the base of my teamates.
If I’m running a dungeon with him, I’d use the healing wind because the symbols and dodging almost always kept me at full health. No need for the heal haha! Us it on your party!

Ranger or Engineer?

The shortbow had its range reduced, but the damage was taken up by almost 20%. The short bow now has a range of 900, witch is average for a ranged weapon. So please, this is balanced. Also, the speed of the arrows for both were made 17% faster, which really helps on taking down that health bar.

But to answer OP’s question…

A ranger is very reliant on their pets. The pets have the smarts of a rock. Also, even though you would think them to be ranged, they do better DPS with melee weapons. Risk VS Reward. The sad part is that (probably) their best melee weapon is the sword, which has a leap in the combo. This could send you into a mob that you aren’t prepared for at best, and straight off a cliff at worst. I understand that with the cripple, the le-a-p (sorry, it was censoring this for some reason) is supposed to prevent an enemy from getting away allowing your pet to just demolish them if played right… but it still kind of gets annoying.
Rangers play best in PvE where your pets can survive and be helpful. In WvWvW, they are great at harrasing, and really fun to play. Just run with a zerg, you’ll be fine as long as you know what your pets can do with their skills.
Rangers are next to worthless in a dungeon. They are a waste of a slot right now. Not that they can’t do it, but another class will almost ALWAYS be better. But lucky for me, I don’t care about dungeons really, or I just play them with my Guardian.
I don’t ever do PvP, so I can’t tell you.
But the key to playing a ranger well is to not just auto attack with your bows all day. Use the melee weapons. think of it like Aragorn from Lord of the rings, or like a D&D ranger I guess.

Engineers are great party enhancers, with good DPS to boot. Elixers, grenades, CCs…. A perfectly played engi can ruin your day hard. There really isn’t anywhere they aren’t good, but it requires that you know exactly what tool kit you need, which elixirs will help, and constantly adapt to situations as they pop up. If you can’t, your engi will stink. Its fun to run around with a rifle in WvWvW and just annoy people by not letting them touch you. Shrinking, nets, blasts… but really, I found them too boring personally.

Bottom line-

Rangers are not broke, but they do suck in a dungeon. They do well, but people that I see play them stay away and plink with their bows and ignore their pets. As soon as something starts attacking them, they freak out and try to stay with their bows, and die instantly. Don’t do this and you’ll be fine.

Engineers are great all around, and you can become either a DPS machine, or a boon/condition generator with the right specs. There isn’t an environment where they won’t be good if played well. Maybe hard to play.
