Jormag fight - why is this so annoying?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Daywolf.2630

Daywolf.2630

But yeah I agree, it is way too long fight for the normal boss reward it gives. Takes longer than Tequatl.

It’s actually more of a normal boss fight, just most of the other bosses were remade to be so very-very easy.

1.
a. Defend the turrets
b. Zerg into jormag when the wall is down.
2.
a. Destroy ice crystals
b. Zerg into jormag when the wall is down.

As far as for fears, the times I’m in range, I pop off a stealth.

About $60 the first few months after launch. This was before we realized they were going to abandon paid expansions in favor for floating the game on gem sales like an f2p targeting content primarily at cash cow players. I don’t spend money here any longer.

Retroactive sale refunds/compensation

If someone JUST purchased an item, and it goes on sale within a week after purchase, can you, like, do a partial refund?

This happens to me ALL the time, it’s beyond infuriating.

My friends originally talked me into this game, I caved in and bought it, and a WEEK later they go on sale and put it up for $10 dollars! (And then said friends go and get involved on some other game that had a major update and I’m left alone here ._.)

Only if you can get a refund on friends who talk you into something but don’t buy it for you as a gift. I mean, if I talk a “friend” into playing some game, I usually buy it for them, because they are friends. Then I kill them in-game repeatedly because caring is shari… decapitating.

Needs more Instanced PvE Content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Daywolf.2630

That is one of the things other MMOs such as WoW does great.

well… that should be your solution right there, no? I mean that if it’s so great, why be here wanting it in this game?? Or is it that… it’s not really great, and your bored? Now you want the same thing here that drove you away from there (at least temporarily til next expansion). The problem with WoW is that no one there really knows what they like, just accept what other people tell them they should like. Group think, or hive mind, a loss of identity just accepting that something is “good” when it’s not, just because everyone else there accepts the hive mind thought. Goes against human nature, because you are still bored with it.

Just say no to instanced content.

Latest thing in EVE is ship skins you can trade and purchase. Is it just me, or are all MMO getting a bit creepily alike…

Not really the latest thing, just continued production of them with now permanence to the skins with ship types. But yeah, there are actually a lot of active EVE vet players in GW2, was all the talk in forums and chat way back when (GW2 Pre-launch) regarding the WvW system here, many of which started EVE after games like DAoC, SWG, UO where stuff like this has been around in some form for a very long time.

Where is promised challenging HOT content?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Daywolf.2630

Daywolf.2630

I’m sure they will put “more challenging” content in there, but just how much is hard to say. Likely it’ll be mixed.

I pref more challenging content like Lyss or Grenth, not speaking of limp defense at all but the full assault chain… and even best with ~20 people during north America late night hours. That’s like 50% chance Grenth will fail unless everyone really pays attention.

But my hopes are not up for stuff like that, likely it’ll be more like DT and SW, which is ok, though a bit too dependent on having ~60+ people that know what they are doing as opposed to 20.

However, with day/night cycles… it really would be nice as some suggested where day focuses on building defenses and night just being insane fighting. Then casual players can hold out behind barricades, repair walls, craft temporary arrows with temporary mats – for arrow carts to be delivered, while the rest are out in the insane action.

imo there are ways to diversify tasks within zone wide event situations w/o it all jest being one big zerg and everyone doing the same thing. Games have done that successfully for years, an example being engineers in old planetside1 constantly repairing turrets and vehicles during a siege etc. Successful and entertaining events have diversity of roles, and not necessarily being class dependent.

In my opinion, we don’t need: A world channel stirring up drama; although we could turn it off (hopefully), there’s really no need for it.

Not just that, but technically it would be a nightmare with serious lag. Then to what extent a “world server” since we actually play on a “mega server”. So to whom, every player in the game, and constantly getting gold seller spam?? Then the huge lag with so many people on the channel? Is this something WoW? Really doesn’t change what I said. That it to say, they’re targeting the millennials because they now play. They probably weren’t, wouldn’t have been playing, at least not enough of them, if the industry hadn’t changed in the first place. It’s a chicken and egg thing.

When it was a very niche market, there was less point in milking it. There were already too many barriers to entry.

uh no, it’s all about RMT item shops and who are most vulnerable, a whole marketing science behind it. I’m not just pulling this stuff out of my butt or whatever, I mentioned where you can research this if you dare (imo it’s bleak), it’s no hidden secret in developer communities. You see, people like me, having had time to develop the part of my brain that manages money effectively, well are not the target. But young impulsive financially-undeveloped people are. In fact kids today are probably more vulnerable than ever, just like illiteracy rate is higher than ever before etc.

But not dogging on anet here, they’re gem store stuff isn’t really geared for instant win spending. All the dirty tricks you mostly find in pure f2p models, often the cartoony sort especially. But what the gem store is geared for here is mostly cosmetic purchases (hence fast leveling in a themepark), although the bl key gambling has been a hot button issue for many, and even rather blatantly as the ui functions like a slot machine. They have played the line, but doesn’t seem to work for them with active players bleeding away, many of those being adults looking for less rmt and more challenge. Something they seem to be trying to address with HoT being a more traditional paid expansion and “more challenging”.

list goes on.

What other games? Is it really necessary to mishmash single-player, multi-player and mmo all together? Fine dining out of a dumpster, bon appétit.

Instancing is not mmo, it’s multi-player. Instance raids isn’t even really raiding, it’s just dungeoning with a large group in some multi-player game instance. The word “raid” was stolen long ago.

eh not really, industry leading periodicals published on gamasutra and such linked/supported GDC sites for many years on marketing practices (monetization) pretty much favor targeting millinials for RMT. I think the end answer, if I’m perfectly frank is “This game just isn’t for really hardcore dungeon types”.

I knew that when I started. It was much the same from GW1 that I spent a few years in. But not once have I said in forums “GW2 needs public dungeons like UO does/did etc”. It’s called self control. Lest why would I screw up my gameplay having multiple games with the same exact gameplay? Oh yeah, they [public school systems] teach kids now-a-days (for some time now) how the hive mind is king and everyone/everything should be the same. It gives marketing a single target to focus on (makes them happy), rather than the diversity of interest that is hard to contain. So if one game is popular using instanced raiding, every game needs to have it, comrade.

Isnt it funny how the MMO players have aged with the genre? Ive spoken to plenty of people, and of course myself, that feel the same. Hardcore MMOs were a blast back in the day, I could game all day and night. I still recall those days fondly but in reality, just cant do it anymore, which is why I love this game (though, a bit more tougher pve and instanced content would be nice.) I played Archeage its first few months, and while I had a lot of fun for a while, just not something I can maintain anymore, so I came back here. I love how easy that is to do in this, and even if I play another MMO in the future I know Ive always got this one! I guess it was kind of proof of owning a pair of ruby-tinted glasses.

Hmm? no idea what you are talking about. Back in the day, early EQ etc, I was the raid leader for my guild (played UO too where I was the events officer for 3rd largest ranked guild, global, first three years). We had people in the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and even 60’s. Maybe even 70’s, but that generation was more modest (much like my parents were). Many of these players came from MUDs, pure massively multiplayer online role-play game experience. I think it’s more a generational thing, and why so may genX’ers, baby boombers and wwii gens dog on millennials /shrugs (I like some). And sadly, RMT item shops target them and revolve game development on how they can pull millennials into spending tons of cash (and they DO!) cha-ching. [Repent, the end is nigh].

Not all of course, like in this other mmo I play, Mills show to be able to be truly hard-core. I’m just a genX ‘core’ player myself. I really believe it’s generational though, much study into mmo development (and practiced on the indie side) and studying the uhh AAA marketing side of mmo’s. It can be truly diabolical. We old folk play just as much, just maybe not your games. Like lol? what’s that…? hah

Yeah, I’m glad that GW2 (and the other games I play) aren’t anything like the old MMOs. I like the relaxed atmosphere of this game.

Well I don’t think that they should all be the same. Like in those horrible old mmo’s (hah), I played both UO and EQ1 (launch state). Loved them both, especially because they were both so very different to each other. I currently still play mainly two mmo’s, both as different as day and deep space night where no one can hear your screams as you are awoxed and looted. I don’t need or want one to be like the other, or like when UO started to become gear dependent like EQ1, I eventually ended my UO sub; didn’t need a second EQ1. If you don’t like something, leave, don;t try to make it like your other game which you will eventually come to the same conclusion and walk away.

  • Easy leveling
I learnt this from my previous post, “GW2 leveling is way too fast”. Now I understand why leveling in GW2 is so fast. “It unlocks all the contents for all the players quickly, so every players can play all the contents in the game.”. That’s my conclusion from my previous post. I am actually pretty shocked by this answer. “Access to all the contents”?? Isn’t this an MMORPG? From my previous MMORPGs experience, only top ranked or top level players can access to “all the contents” in the game. Why make all players accessible to all the contents in the game? It makes GW2 feels like a Single Player RPG with multiplayer feature enabled.

Well then your experience with MMORPGs is limited. You are speaking of the pure progression themepark mmo, where as this is nothing new to sandbox games at all. GW2 just does the themepark a little differently, with some afterthought of a sandbox. Fast levleing is nothing new, more of the problem here is it’s still mostly easy once you do get into lvl80 zones. Didn’t start that way, but over time most stuff got hit with the casual kitty hammer. HoT is suppose to be more challenging, but we’ll see…

Raids?

Daywolf.2630

Umm EQ1 still had instanced raiding before WoW I believe, implimenting it about the time WoW/EQ2 released. Open World raiding had developed into a major problem with the social implications of competition and zerging.

Like I said, WoW popularized instanced raiding, at least among their own existing fanbase, many of which originally flooding the mmo genre from Blizzard titles like Diablo etc (who for years argued that Diablo was an mmo) into WoW. Then went through all the existing mmo games when they got bored in-between expansions (and those clones to come) demanding WoW features, such as instanced raiding which is a multi-player mechanic, not an mmorpg mechanic; it’s more attune to Diablo multi-player gaming.

It was in EQ1, instanced raiding, but not until late expansions. I was there from launch, it was not happily received by the majority of players. It was a part of the whole slide into obscurity that started from around the time of the PoP expansion, a slide into more multi-player style casual play (instant travel, instanced raids, solo friendly and content on demand etc). It doomed EQ1.

It doesn’t matter if you liked old-school raiding or not, many that played mmo’s before WoW did like it, it’s a part of what made MMO’s actual MMO’s and not just multi-player Diablo freak games that an army of Blizzard fanboi’s demanded cloned into every game when they finally discovered mmo’s for the first time through WoW – and the blitz promotions to existing Blizzard network members to try it – pushing it into a snowball effect for marketing purposes. WoW never developed anything new in the mmo genre, apart from boredom where the players are bored to tears between expansions.

Daywolf.2630

What does having raids have to do with turning a game into WoW? GW2 is nothing like WoW and neither is raiding. Raiding in games has existed long before WoW and will exist long after WoW. It is almost like people want actual content in GW2. Just because you’re content to join an open world map and spam 1 doesn’t mean everybody else is. If that is what you want to do then do it. But stop being selfish and trying to keep others from doing what they want to do as well.

It’s instanced raiding, and WoW popularized it. EQ1 had raiding, but not instanced raiding until later… as the game began to fail after that point once introduced. EQ2 had instanced raiding, but EQ2 was never really popularized, not within the existing player base of the genre, it always suffered from the design decisions. Then came WoW and popularized instanced raiding, and from there every WoW clone had to have, and every WoWkitten newbie (the hoards of Blizzard fanbois who suddenly discovered mmo’s) had to swarm every existing mmo game/forum and demand it like the plague.

Instanced raiding is not even “mmorpg”, it’s casual multi-player gaming. It’s about as stupid as Barny the Dinosaur. I fail to even rationalize why they call it a “raid”. It has nothing to do with the actual persistent game world with other players, just an instanced copy of the game to play on your own time and choosing. That’s no “raid”.

You see, in REAL raiding, players do not raid the MOB’s, the MOB’s raid the players. That’s how it started, and sadly only few games still do this.

As for your presumption of what I do in this game, I don’t 1 1 1. Well.. apart from some of the more lame world boss events when I’m just doing the circuit and like Shatterer happens to be up next or whatever. But for PvE I mostly do temple assaults. It’s about as close to real raiding as you can get to in this game. Better early on though, it’s been hit with the casual hammer a couple times easier and shorter on most

Daywolf.2630

Most MMOs are not made specifically with the roleplaying community in mind.

Yeah not most (most are wow clones now) but there have been some that do make a good effort to provide an RP environment, and even GM’s and Dev’s that participated in games to foster such in-game communities.

One that really comes to mind is…was UO. Well still is, but long since got rid of their seers and volunteers that really helped the RP communities prosper. There were huge RP events there, with 1000 player RP alliances (many guilds). Player towns, elections, wars (pve and pvp), all sorts of stuff. SWG had strong RP ability, especially around RP player towns. Then EQ1 had a dedicated RP server, different rules, though they eventually changed that drawing in a lot of non-RP’ers for various reasons. Then probably king of the RP communities is secondlife, in the actual RP communities, not speaking of the weird stuff there. Some examples, there are more. A bit far away from immersion casual gaming.

“meant for”? No, it’s not. It’s an immersionist system (immersion gamers). It lacks the social tools specifically for RP purposes (beyond emotes anyway). So technically it’s not “meant for” RP’ers distinctly and thus the public zones must be shared with all sorts of play styles, even if they act like little meow meow kittens that cant control their rude behaviors.

Race doesn’t matter much outside of the first parts of the personal story because the skills assigned to each race are not really worth much and that’s by design. So go with what race you prefer as far as appearance and story line.

As far as guild, try the looking for sub-forum.

Racial skills. At present, guard has no real ranged weapon (but will soon) so many have picked Charr for the Charzooka on elite skill. When I used to run dungeons, especially in AC, it was very useful for like killing wall turrets in that spider room. Not a strong weapon, but better than just standing there watching everyone else do the work.

Like many of you I don’t want GW2 to be like WoW; except for one thing that I believe WoW does exceptionally well, and that is raids.

No, that’s exactly what you are saying. I’ve seen it in every mmo game since WoW released, and the sad thing is some developers listened to it and changed their game turning them into failed ghost towns after the WoW players wound up saying after their cries for change were listened to “but it’s just now WoW enough yet” as they went back to WoW. If you like WoW raids, I suggest playing WoW, not every game needs to be a cookie cutter of WoW game style, that even WoW players constantly complain about and get bored of within their own game until the next expansion. I truly wish WoW were never made, the mmo genre would have fared far better rather than just being a few non-wow-clone holdouts with hoards of WoW clones everywhere.

A game that tries to become a game for everybody, becomes a game for nobody.

We weren’t beta testing the rev though (beta in your title). It was all about the events. That’s why I didn’t spend much time with the rev, I was there to test the events and see if I noticed any bugs to mention. The log files they collected, they are likely all about how the events ran and ways to fix and optimize them.

I don’t think they are even close to the point of worrying about nerfing the revenant as you suggest, and we likely didn’t even see the actual current build of the class as their in-house testers are likely testing… which could be completely different at this point. I think once they put it all together, we’ll have a better stance to offer critique.

I did run rev a little, but I didn’t see anything op in it’s current playable state. After all, the gear stats were limited, and when bringing in my engi I was breezing through stuff a lot faster than when I was using the rev. Just seems to be a waste of time at this point to be calling for nerfs, of which I’m just saying nerfing rev at this point hah I pretty much disagree with.

Likely they had the servers in debug mode churning out log reports to read from the server client/app (ass opposed to the entire server on a stress test). So from three two-hr blocks, they took enough data to work with for a while. Likely we’ll see more testing once they make tweaks and/or move to test out other new systems.

Awkward Controls?

Maybe it’s the POV cam. It does feel a little off, but they just put it in so still a little rough. But, still a lot better than no POV cam at all, terribly needed for certain situations. For someone like me that has always switched cam modes, it’s not an issue.

But yeah, it feels a little slushy in POV, and aspect ratio isn’t quite polished; like no real peripheral stretching/lateral fish eye to make it look more human eye like, rather its like looking say though a flat box. I think on wide screen it is more noticeable (passively), so then moving looks a little odd, a little less natural compared to RL vision. This way when you move, the corners of the screens seem to move faster, giving you a better sense of velocity, and a stronger feeling of peripheral vision.

A small callus spot under my right wrist and a table mark next to my mouse/trackball.

Yeah it was a good short run. I really don’t have anything to report regarding obvious bugs, nothing game stopping for sure. Graphics ran smooth, but I was expecting to not have many problems with a fairly current geforce card as normally developers use nvidia’s graphic dev tools so likely optimized already. I’m sure they have lots of server logs to look over out of whatever debugging mode that they had going (likely reason for no huge massive zergs). Looked pretty darn good though.

LOL… Half of the OP was complaining about movement in the new map and the other half was complaining about forums and people on the forums. Awesome.

But what else is he / she suppose to do? Accept that other people have different opinions then him / her? Of course not, pre-ad hominems for all!

Hmm hey well, when someone starts a thread “My Personal Impression Of Beta” and then spends half the great wall of text gibberish blaming forum posters for not letting anet make it kitten (the little fluffy animal thingy) easy enough for him… well fair game I say :P heh

I’ve been slapped plenty of times at Dwayna and didn’t go down, but then I’m not in full zerker build. Same with grenth when it glitches and doesn’t show rings before you bounce multiple times. That’s just unavoidable, and when I do die I promptly TP out if there is more than 25% health on risen high priest (for the example). It’s just about being considerate to other players, I realize that the universe doesn’t revolve around me, and I have time to make it back before the end of the phase. Of course if it’s a wipe and less than 25% health, I still WP. But like I’ve said, I’ve seen people lay there at Lyss, 30sec run from a WP, just demanding a revive. Sure, they can lay there and watch the chest decay for all I care.
