Who to Boost to lvl 80

While I’m biased on this, I’d definitely recommend boosting your elementalist up to a tempest. It’s a really versatile class once you get used to it and you’ll have access to pretty awesome DPS as well as substantial support. There’s really nothing like pumping out a ton of damage in fire, then swapping out to water and healing everyone up to full health when they’re almost dead. It’s a serious power trip, haha.

Tempest in this case adds the option to use shouts which allow you access to speed/condition damage/etc as well as auras, which are immensely helpful in group play. It also allows you to “overload” an elemental attunement, which is essentially just a strong attack that also applies conditions and lingers for a little bit. As a tempest, you have more survivability than a base elementalist, pretty much constant access to swiftness depending on which weapons you use, and it expands on your ability to support others in group play.

Daredevil vs Revenant

What class do you currently main? What playstyles are you looking for?

DD and herald are both pretty similar in feel. Personally, I prefer daredevil as it’s a little faster-paced and the initiative-based gameplay is really satisfying. If you like playing glass cannon/dps, I’d recommend daredevil. Herald feels a little slower (very minimally, but it’s there), but you can also take significantly more damage than a thief and it’s easier to get used to if you’re not someone who usually plays squishy characters. If you’re used to playing a tankier build, go for herald.

Thank you all so very much for your answers! They’ve all been immensely helpful to me and I’ve learned a ton.

I’ve luckily already got all ascended weapons and trinkets for the character in question (Tequatl’s been very kind to me in terms of weapon chests), so I’ve settled for just upgrading to a more suitably statted exotic set and some superior runes of strength. Once I’ve collected a bit more in raw materials, I’ll craft some ascended pants, but that’ll be a long term goal.

I’ll also give fractals another shot. I’ve heard they’re more fun in the higher levels and with a dedicated group (more experience and fewer wipe-outs than your run of the mill PUG), so maybe I’ll get some ascended drops once I bring my level up a bit.

Thanks again, you’re all fabulous!

Ascended armor - worth it?

Emergencee.8259

I play PvE and WvW with a long term goal of “someday raids.” Never really been interested in PvP or fractals.

Recently, I’ve been looking into ascended gear and dabbling in collecting some of the materials needed to craft a set. In theory, it shouldn’t be difficult to craft, it’d just take a couple of months to make all of the damask/elonian leather and it’d be comparatively expensive to just buying a new set of exotics.

Having just taken a more in-depth look into the cost, however, I’m kind of wondering if the 500g+ sink is worth the price. I know historically it’s been said to be necessary for upper fractal levels, but is it needed for raiding? Or is it just something that’s kind of nice and useful to have?

this helps a lot and so does the rest of your post and the other posts here. So, to be clear though, there isn’t a way to test my Characters look out in the game before purchasing the kit, right? Especially if I want the exclusive features?

There’s a way, but you’d have to make the character first. If you go into any starting city or Lion’s Arch, make your way over to the Black Lion Trading Post people. Standing next to them will be a human lady in a bright purple dress with a little mirror icon over her head. Talk to her and you’ll be taken to a character creation window that includes all of the exclusive stuff in addition to the normal features. You can try out your look there.

I’ve been playing around with character creation as well recently and the main difference I’ve noted between creation and gameplay is that humans and norn are going to look about 2-3 skin tones lighter in open world than they do in the preview. And they look kinda plastic-skinned due to the minimal texturing on the body/older faces.

Could you specify a little more about what it is that bothers you? Is it that you can’t see the changes you’ve made to the face, skin texture, colours are different, etc?

Specializations - which to play?

in Players Helping Players

Emergencee.8259

Hey friends. I’ve been playing for a little under two years now and I’m dying to try a new profession. Unfortunately, the insta-level 80 silverwastes boost doesn’t let me try specializations, which I know affect classes pretty heavily in the end, so I’m having a hard time picturing what the final result of leveling will be and would love some input. I currently play mostly PvE with a bit of WvW thrown in (sea of sorrows server, so it’s an itty-bitty zerg if that matters). No PvP or raiding for now, so it’s very much okay if the class is in low demand for those areas.

I currently play tempest, daredevil, and chronomancer. Tempest (main) and daredevil are very fun and I enjoy the fast pace, damage output potential, and maneuverability. No complaints with either class, I’d just like to try something new and different than the glass cannon I have set up on both characters. Chronomancer might have been a little too different for me, however, and I’m finding the combination of high survivability and low personal damage a bit too slow and frustrating. (Entirely my fault, I should have predicted that switching to the exact opposite playstyle wouldn’t work for me.)

I’d love to try something with middle of the road survivability and damage that allows me to try and solo some higher level content/WvW a bit more effectively. Something that doesn’t immediately get downed if a champ (or opposing zerg member) catches me and gets a hit or two in, but where I still feel like I’m doing enough damage to keep my sanity. If it has a moderate speed playstyle, ranged attack options, or a speed boost skill, that’s a definite plus. I’m cool with steep learning curves and I don’t mind if I end up dying a lot while learning the ropes. (I do understand that I’m going to be exchanging some dps for some survivability. I promise I’m not expecting sky-high damage output and bomb-proof damage absorbing capabilities.)

If you guys have any suggestions or recommendations for me, I’d absolutely love to hear them. (And if you want to spell out why you love those options as well, that’d be appreciated even more!) I have another 2-3 character slots that are just kind of sitting around, so I’m more than willing to try out a few different professions to see how they feel/fit. Thanks so much in advance for your input, I really appreciate it.

in Looking for...

Emergencee.8259

Hey there! My bf and I (and potentially my brother) are casual players looking for an equally casual guild.

In a perfect world, this would be one that offers some combination of exploration, occasional raids, dungeons, world bosses (TT would be a huge plus!), SW/Dry Top/HoT maps, and general friendly chit-chat.

Other bits and bobs:
-Two of us are mainly EST, one is CST
-18+ is preferred, but definitely not necessary
-We’re open to any region, not just NA
-We’re all currently on the Sea of Sorrows server, but none of us really do WvW
-We all try to be on every day, at least for a few minutes

If you’re not in a guild and just want friends to keep you company, feel free to add me in-game or send me a message on here! We’d love to have some friends to explore with!

World bosses, silverwastes, HoT event maps, and even Dry Top are good farming locations. Sell the rares/exotics you get (unless you feel like gambling for globs of ecto), salvage everything else, and then sell the materials.

Key farming also used to be pretty popular, but I’m not sure how valid a method it is anymore. Haven’t heard anything recently.

Venom build suggestions for thief?

in Thief

Posted by: Emergencee.8259

Emergencee.8259

I’d say probably trade in D/P for D/D and it’s death blossom. good duration bleeds on multiple targets and get a bit more condi damage aside from the poison on AA as well as the x2 dmg backstab. As far as gear goes, you can try looking into sinister gear. might go nicely with the hybrid sort of thing you’re going for.

Threw this together real quick of what I would do sorta based on what you had: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vZAQJAoYnMJCNNhFNBOOB8PhDaiiXD5wNoDgJMC69VQEoA-ThRDABHrEsG1fWW5nJ6BSa/BAM/BA-e

Also, another heal might keep you alive easier. the venom one is frustrating sometimes with it’s cast time and lack of any condi clear.

Only thing is, with mine there’s no way to trigger fury but it’s usually plentiful in dungeon groups and pve events. You could also add an accuracy sigil and get ~40% which is decent enough. You’d basically be playing a CnD BS build with venoms. Hope it gives you some good ideas.

This is perfect, it’s exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much!

Venom build suggestions for thief?

Emergencee.8259

Hi there! I leveled up a thief a while ago and with the overhaul of the traits system, I decided to totally redo his build. Venoms and conditions in general look very fun, but I’ve been having a heck of a time getting that balance between doing enough damage and not dying when my computer lags (average of maybe 11-13 fps on a low-population map). I was hoping maybe an experienced thief or two could help me adjust this into something workable.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vZAQNAoaVnMJCFNhNOBONBsPhjWiivoHRRoDgDYB6L2TsFA-TBxMwAX2fQrmgHq/AQPBA-e

Armor/Accessories: I’m currently running full exotic carrion armor, with a mix of berserker and carrion exotic accessories.

Runes: Superior runes of rage

Weapons: Dagger/Pistol and Shortbow. (I’m currently running carrion exotics, but have two teq hoards I was considering using. Would these be viable for this build?)

Current trait lines:
Shadow Arts: Concealed defeat, Leeching venoms, Venomous aura
Acrobatics: Pain response, Hard to catch, Assassin’s reward
Deadly Arts: Dagger training, Panic strike, Potent poison

Skills:
Skelk venom
Spider venom
Assassin’s signet
Skale venom
Thieves guild

Ideally I’d like to be able to do dungeons, general PvE, world bosses, that sort of thing.
Thanks so much for your help in advance! This class seems like a ton of fun and I’m really excited to continue learning to play it!

As far as I can tell, people don’t like to do turrets because of the amount of abuse that turrets get when something doesn’t go well. People are always barking orders at them and blaming them when things go wrong or are taking too long. I have infinite respect for people who regularly do turrets because I personally won’t be willing take that kind of heat.

S boats has a hard time drawing people because champs spawn there, but people pop in and out from the zerg all the time, so it’s not too bad if you’re missing a few. Same, to some extent, with S hills. S boats tends to work double duty these days and, again, the zerg tends to lend a hand whenever they notice things are getting iffy.

I’ve never seen N boats not full, though, and N hills seems to be pretty easy to fill as well.

Kicked at Server Reset

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Emergencee.8259

Emergencee.8259

Hello Emergencee,

My question to you would be, why would you start a world boss fight when you know the server is going to reset? That seems highly counter productive and will overthrow a win for that encounter probably as a guarantee. I would suggest picking a time relevant to the event after the server reset has occurred so you won’t be forced into this situation.

Best,
Van

Hey, thanks for the response! Like TechnoBill said, the it’s the server time, not the actual server that’s resetting. I just didn’t know how to phrase that correctly.

I choose to fight Teq at this time because I’m in class from 8-5 everyday and the only alternatives are to fight him at 11pm (I do sometimes catch this one if I’m up late), 2am, 5am, or in the middle of class. I’m not quite that dedicated, so if I miss him at 8pm (00:00 server time), I’m pretty much out of luck.

Emergencee.8259

I’m not sure if this is a bug, but it’s happened a couple dozen times by now, so I thought it’d be worth mentioning. I show up to fight Teq at server reset several times a week and make sure to get there at least 30 minutes early so that I can join a defense team and be on an organized map.

Within the past month or two, I’ve been kicked from the map consistently (around 50-75% of the time) at exactly server reset. I get redirected to the character selection screen and, while I can go right back to Sparkfly Fen, I lose my place on the now-full map and end up on an overflow.

This occurs only at server reset.

I’m running on a 2010 macbook on university internet (35mbps).

Classes related to player personality?

Emergencee.8259

Yeah, a person’s preferred classes probably says something about their personality or other preferences. People are going to play the classes that they like best and which fit them best. They’re not going to play something that doesn’t fit them well because they won’t enjoy it as much. Everyone also has their own playstyle, so it’s natural that they’d play different classes similarly to some degree.

Refresh my memory, was anyone offended by Cantha in Guild Wars 1?

From what I heard from various people on the forums, Japan, China and Korea weren’t happy that their cultures were mixed together.

Mixed architectural styles and cultures don’t sell well historically in east Asian countries, so they’d miss out on a wide number of players if they made Cantha a melting pot kind of area like it would have been in Divinity’s Reach. It’d probably work better if they picked a single culture to base it on, but I’m not sure how accurate to lore that’d be.

Look! Another armor skin butchered to the outfit level.

The gem store will keep having outfits while ingame rewards will focus more on armors. Would you prefer to have it the other way around? : >

I think we’ve had 3 outfits and no armor pieces since they announced this. I’m not sure if you compare 1 outfit to 6 gear pieces or a single cross-weight helm but at this point I’d take a gem store sandles over another outfit.

I dare say it’s safe to presume they are heavily making armors for the expansion currently, and outfits mean a third of the production to drop in while they work on the good HoT stuff. But That_Shaman rendered some BEAUTIFUL upcoming armors. I can drop some youtube links here so you all have something to look forward to.

There’s a lot more up and coming and rendered by him but I hope this is a good start.

And as far as the Monk’s outfit goes: I’m sad it has so much clipping on female characters. If that goes away I’ll consider getting it.

Those are gorgeous! Medium armor without coat and wow, that light armor!

While it’d be cool to see, it’d cause problems with the personal story, like everyone else has said.

From a lore standpoint, there’s also the issue of it having sat at the bottom of the ocean for hundreds of years. Realistically, the ground would be so full of salt that Orr’d be pretty much doomed to stay barren for another several hundred years. Nothing could grow there and that has nothing to do with the dragon.

Jormag fight - why is this so annoying?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Emergencee.8259

Emergencee.8259

As another ele (and a pretty weak one too), It’s totally possible to survive a Jormag fight without dying or spamming heal. Stay back out of the frost areas and if you don’t want to use flamethrowers/bazookas to take care of the wall, just take care of the vets/elites/champs or the ice pillars, depending on which phase of the battle you’re in, or res people. Go attack him once the wall’s down and you’ll still get your damage in for gold participation.

You can even break fear by toggling or avoid it entirely by standing in the right places.

I’m not saying it’s not a really long and monotonous fight, but it’s not broken in any way and it is survivable.

Is you’re not going to run conditions, swap out blinding ashes for pyromancer’s puissance. It gives you might for every fire skill you use, which is useful if you’re not taking advantage of earth attunement.

I personally find water attunement points super helpful and use 4 for mine. Soothing wave and cleansing wave in particular are nice for running dungeons or for some of the world bosses because both you and some nearby folks shake off a condition and regain some health, so you spend less time in fear/poison/etc and more time doling out damage. Saves your heals as well for when you really need them.

That said, it really depends on what you want to be doing. If you’re not into group activities or if you just want more damage per second, you’re probably better off skipping water.

It’s totally tough to be less than the best at something when everyone else seems to take it really seriously, but you’ll get better as time goes on and you figure things out. I’m not sure what you’re involved in, but it sounds like maybe group events and dungeons might be the main problem. If that is the case, consider maybe joining a casual guild – a lot of those are really friendly and helpful – and making your own LFG postings to fit your needs rather than responding to them like RSLongK suggested. For newer people, speed runs are often a problem, so maybe specify that you don’t want to skip the low level mobs. Practice makes perfect. You’ll be rocking it soon~
