It’s true, warrior is the best class, ele and necro are useless, the others are somewhere in the middle.
Ranger – Keeps their distance from people
Because rangers always use bows right?
I picked ranger because I picked elementalist first and it was fun for a while but the class is simply not viable. When I rerolled, the community didn’t know yet that warriors are the best class so I went with the safe pet class bet. Can’t be bothered to reroll warrior now.
but there is a point in laying out your concerns instead of insulting an imagined percentage of the player base per se. and if there is no point in those things you mentioned, why bother posting apart from feeling totally l337 ?
You got me there.
However, I think trying to come up with the best League of Legends kit to go with each weapon is pointless. The skill system is so far removed from the GW1 ideal that there is nothing that can be done to salvage it.
great, until now this was a rather mature discussion somewhat concerning the facts, congratulations to you, man.
No point in discussing something that is bleeding obvious. No point in suggesting something that won’t be implemented anyway.
Build Wars.
They removed build planning in favour of action based combat… which boils down to either pressing “1” and mashing hotkeys when they come off cooldown, or (against bosses) dodging every hit or else you die.
The combat in this game is disappointing, which is a shame because the game was supposed to be about that. They took away builds for this reason.
Might as well play Diablo now.
Some people don’t even know how to attack or what the buttons do…
Lick Wounds: This skill now functions only with ranger pets.
I almost got hopeful there.
Lick Wounds: This skill now functions
Alas.
Better luck next time?
Yes there is…Look at my reply. I believe it is ctrl +right-click on the skill. You will see the arrows around the skill icon disappear. If you hover over the skill with your mouse it should say in the tool tip how to disable auto attack.
I have done this on my sword so I know it works. You will just have to press the 1 key whenever you want to attack.
Which adds up to about five thousand “1” presses per day.
I was hoping for the equivalent of “S” in Dota.
It doesn’t matter that it’s over time, but its damage is not enough for the lengthy cast time…
Warhorn and Axe 4 useless? Nope.
The point of a minor dot that deals less dps than “1” due to a huge cast time or a minor bleed with a cast time is…?
So basically there is no stop button.
Meh.
So, how do I stop auto attacking so I can actually dodge? Is there a button to interrupt auto attacks?
The point of fighting with a warhorn is that people get tired of switching to it for running and back to their axe for fighting. Both warhorn and offhand axe have a useless “4” and the single remaining skill has a long cooldown and isn’t really going to influence the fight either way.
Whirling defense is epic against swarm type encounters though. Have the bear tank half a dozen spiders, get in behind them and spin2win.
I have lernt that there really isn’t a reason to use a bear unless you want it tanking a champion, dungeon mob or a crapton of mobs.
Tanking a crapton of mobs is the whole point though. Have it draw aggro from all of them except your current target and if you tanked it up enough it will die at the same rate as you, meaning your heal is twice as effective.
Why bother with a pet that does slightly more dps when you could use a pet that prevents you from taking any damage?
I love the tricks you can do with a pet
I’ve had my bears tank significant bosses from start to finish. “Press F1 for 30 second stun”.

So yeah I would really love to dodge….
…shortsword ranger here. You physically can’t dodge during your melee cycle because auto attack 2 and 3 are ranged leaps so after you dodge you just leap right back in. The only thing you can do is use your “2” which is a leap backwards with enough range to stop your auto attack… but it doesn’t cancel your ongoing auto attack so you have to mash the button until your current attack ends.
Or I could just get out my longbow, send in the indestructibear, press “1” and afk.
Great, you removed DR! Thanks for listening to the comm—
Oh.
Great, now do the same for every flipping environmental weapon in the game or they are still all useless.
You’ll do less damage than everyone else who just stands there and mashes their buttons.
Unless you’re an engineer with the stupid bomb kit.
Never believe pre-release hype.
So who here uses xfire?
I don’t know anyone who does.
I guess people who use xfire are more likely to be those who spend a lot of their time in gaming. It is natural for those who have played for over 200 hours during the first month to get bored and decided to take a break.
But they are far from representative for most of the player base. A casual player who spend 2hrs a day in gaming will need at least three months to reach 200 hours play time. And casual player is always by far the dominant force on gaming market. But do these people even use xfire? Seriously, have you ever seen a guild or clan in ANY game saying, “Hey we’re looking for members, must have xfire!” or people in GW2 in the mists saying, “need 1 for tournament, must use xfire”? I never have, I never hear anyone ever talking about using xfire for anything in games at all. Hell, I barely even remembered that xfire existed until this thread came and started claiming that xfire was the best metric for determining if a game was failing or not.
People are claiming that the “hardcore” people use xfire, well, I’ve gotten to nearly 200 hours in GW2 so far, and have probably thousands of hours in just the last year playing everything fro MMOs to RTS and FPS and no one I know uses xfire nor does any guild, clan, or group I know of even talk about using it.
Doesn’t matter, when xfire says a game has collapsed to 1/3 of its original playerbase in 1 month this is an accurate number. Even if only 1% uses xfire that’s still enough people to be statistically valid, and declining popularity of xfire itself does not manifest itself on such a short timescale.
And while you’re kiting you’re not doing damage so say goodbye to your rewards.
By the way, it’s not just about who does the most damage and has the lowest health. Rangers are unlikely to pull aggro off their bear even in melee even though they’re much squishier.
At least you didnt get tea bagged like in some other game I wont mention. But ya dont be like them.
It is ever hilarious when 6 mobs get trained into you by some bleep who got in over his head and decides to make them your problem. Epecially when you kill 5 and die to the 6th and the guy walks back in, loots the corpses and walks away. This happened several times.
Also, I did a few skill challenges where people just stood there and watched for 5 minutes and shot 2 arrows when the boss was almost dead so they got credit.
Also, I helped a guy through a difficult passage, rezzed him a bunch of times, finally died within sight of the vista and the guy ignored me and hit the vista and ported out.
Remind me why exactly I should be nice to people again. Going to Caledon Forest and annoying some noob by grabbing mobs with scorpion wire before he can tag them is fun. And it’s not like helping people benefits me in any way.
Except for that one guy who was doing a boss in an area that was out of the way and he asked for help and we did the boss together. I almost thought the game had a mature community willing to work as a team. Then I got to the norn starting zone, got called an idiot twice in five minutes because I suggested the classes were not balanced and decided humanity is still scum.
I bought this game hoping against hope it still retained some of that GW1 Build Wars aspect even though the previews looked pretty dire. I never got into GW1 before it was too late, but a strategy based MMO seemed like a great idea.
But no, noobs might be unable to figure it out and would cry so Anet made character building irrelevant. Just lug around all of your weapons, get the best traits and spells and you’re set.
Hell, you don’t even need the best traits and spells. In fact I didn’t even spend my trait points yet and I don’t use my unlocked spells. No problems at all killing 2-3 monsters 3-4 levels above me.
The only decisions I made on my character were 1/ replace my standard heal with the obviously better Troll Unguent, 2/ get two bears because they are obviously the best pets. This game really has awesome depth.
Add slot machine loot.
Rename to “Diablo 3”.
That’s all the game needs (especially #1). It is exactly the same as Diablo, but in a persistent world. Exactly the same. Well Diablo is a popular format, it’s just the game was sold as the sequel to Build Wars, the "M"MO for discerning players. It’s like if Eve Online 2 would be Wing Commander.
So just stop trying to cater to the GW1 crowd, announce the game stands on its own two feet, and add tons of loot. Loot keeps people playing, and spamfest gameplay is par for the course for a Diablo title.
Done.
Just get out a ranged weapon like you’re supposed to, and if you get aggro then disengage and kite in circles until someone else gets aggro. You know, like how you defeated Diablo 12 years ago.
In the end it doesn’t matter. If a bot can teleport to monsters and kill them, the bot can also teleport around the map and kill monsters. It could go through portals and kill monsters.
I think they may have actually meant to type “goons”.
The letters aren’t close. They must have been angry with some Chinese colleague while typing up the quest description.
I hope Anet doesn’t listen to anyone complaining about balance because I was smart enough to roll an OP class from the start. If people didn’t, well, their loss…
Thing is, there is no sudden break in the Xfire player count as would be expected when a new game comes out. It peaked at the very beginning and then just gradually and steadily slid downwards.
Of course, why bother rolling an elementalist if you need to spend more effort for less results?
Elementalist: get the bomb kit, run around in circles, never get hit by the mobs and just kill them with “1” bombs dropped behind you. Ridiculous.
Edit: the only melee class that doesn’t need to dodge nonstop is the ranger. Get a bear (like everyone else and for good reason), have it go in first and draw aggro, then go in afterwards and beat away. Adds can be dealt with by having the bear attack them first so he draws aggro from all of them. It’s easy to melee if no one ever attacks you ROFL.

Killing mobs PvE is something every class is capable of. The question is: how many can you kill, how many levels above you? In the end, if you don’t farm faster than other classes there is no point in playing that class.
It seems the viable PvP classes are thief, mesmer and guardian, so don’t bother with either class if you want to PvP.
In PvE there are more viable classes, but the necro is heavily bugged and the ele is just useless. If you really absolutely have to choose between these two, go with necro because their bugs are getting fixed and it doesn’t look like eles are getting buffed any time soon (the latest patch even nerfed them).
Eles are fun until you realise everyone else kills twice as fast by pressing “1” than you do by frantically using 15 spells in every fight.
To be fair, according to Xfire the developers are not alone in not playing the game anymore.
Fix botting.
It’s funny how people flame him for wanting to play the best class in a competitive PvP setting. It’s like playing to win is now unacceptable.
I abandoned Giant Enemy Charr and the thief Kill Death Ratio because Anet embarked on this crusade to wipe out unfitting names and people got automatically banned for 3 days just because 3 people reported them. I didn’t want to run the risk of someone reporting me because their sense of immersion wkittentered harder by Giant Enemy Charr than by the fact that they just took 20 bombs to the face and didn’t die.
So I ended up with Oskoreia which is Norse for Wild Hunt etc etc yawn. Boring.
At least I have the freedom to name my pet bears: Broken and Overpowered.
…WoW veterans who are disappointed that the game doesn’t have enough of a grind, and GW1 veterans who are disappointed that the game has a grind.
Insert massive Anet facepalm here.
I’ve seen several bots myself, one farming moas for some reason, one farming windriders in an early Asura area.
Since Anet can’t be bothered to do anthing about the problem I took the law into my own hands and fetched a ton of nearby spiders. Choo choo!
Except you get the best rewards in Orr so there is no point in going back.
Complete all hearts, do all DEs, complete all pois and vistas and STILL not outlevel a zone? Really? And then the next zone starts off with monsters that are 6 levels above me.
Oh well, went on to farm them anyway, didn’t particularly care about a couple of glancing blows. But people who play mesmers, elementalists, warriors, necromancers, guardians, thieves or engineers may have problems.
29 Ranger – 8/10 powerful pve class outside AoE-based events, pet allows for aggro juggling
25 Engineer – 4/10 repetitive and uninteresting gameplay, clunky kit mechanic
22 Elementalist – 6/10 combo potential is fun but overall power level is ridiculously low
Maybe I’d have a level 70 ranger right now if I didn’t waste my time with classes that are not viable or are just a pile of random skills thrown together with no cohesion.
Three words.
Bank Tab Microtransactions.
Nope, not even in actual towns. It seems only RPers even bother…
Not sure what conclusions to draw from this (why are people happy with ele but not ranger when ele is not viable and ranger is very powerful and easy…?) but it is interesting anyway! Especially GD being so far down…
Guardian seems to be the best class overall followed by warrior, elementalist is not viable and the others are mostly at the same level except ranger and engineer have some cheese that is sure to get nerfed.
As far as WoW clones go, it’s a pretty good one and feels like an update to WoW but free to play. It even has largely the same races.
Still, the incredible lack of thought that went into the skill system (from the inability to pick and choose skills to the lack of an auto attack on things like the bomb kit and environmental weapons) is discouraging me.
Remember when there were no heal assists in League of Legends? No one EVER played a healer.
We should have a decision on what pets to use, as of right now the decision is No pet, 2 bears, or dead pets. This along with our final 2 trait lines is class breaking, we need these things fixed so that the Ranger actually has choices.
We do have choices, it’s just that defense is so much more powerful against bosses than offense that anything that leaves you more vulnerable in exchange for what amounts to killing the boss 1% faster is useless.
Why do you want a decision on what pet to use when you along with everyone else will just look for the next best pet again and use that? There is no reason in this game not to use the best profession, best build, best pet and best items. The game does not reward you for deviating from the beaten path even though it easily could (increased event rewards if your build does not match the standard build etc). Being a unique snowflake only makes you farm slower and also makes fights harder for other people during group events, which means you hurt both yourself and other people because you’re a hipster.
I know, “choice” in RPGs usually just means “the best build is hard to find” but after a couple of weeks at most people will figure out what the best build is. There has never been an RPG with real long term choice and there will never be. The only reason RPGs even have skill points and let you build your own character is for those first few enjoyable weeks of discovery where no one knows yet what the best build is.
I think you can avoid the swimming problem by using amphibious pets.
