Err… Why would I want to salvage my legendary armor? Or my ascended armor for that matter? This is not a solution that makes sense.

You could replace runes on legendary armor with new ones without losing the armor so there would really be no reason to salvage BiS item. Although it’s unfair for those who had bought karma or wvw gear for not beign able to salvage their upgrades when they upgrade to ascended/legendary.

Legendary Armor skins & recipes

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gynok.1756

Gynok.1756

Some speculation:

1) I know skins are a subjective topic (if people like them or not) but i really hope anet can do better than ascended armors and spvp glorious armors.

Think the armors will have an animation in combat so go figure.

2) Armors recipe. I think anet will keep the same ratio of ascended armors so an expensive piece (chest, probably similar to a weapon) and other lesser expensive pieces.

The legendary armors will most likely be raid exclusives. Also I think they will be collected from raids so you don’t need much materials or gold to make them. This is only my speculation though.

I was wondering if map completation always will be a requirement or only for weapons.

In general I’m really curious about legendary armor and backpiece recipes and how much will be different from legendary weapons recipe.

Probably they differ alot from what we have now. The precursors for any new weapons will be collectable only and nontradeable so from these facts I would see them alot different from the legendary weapon recipes we have now. It’s also unlikely that the backpieces or armor needs the map completion.

Designing Challenges vs. Designing Gimmicks

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gynok.1756

Gynok.1756

A good level is one where you can be successful even if you didn’t know it already by using your knowledge and skill of the game and its mechanics. For example there should never be hazards or attacks which bypass combat mechanics such as evade or invulnerability. On the other hand there could be hazards that bypass blocks or reflects in certain preferably rare situations but this should always be foreseeable. It is bad design if the player must “just know” if one attack is magically unblockable and one isn’t. Level bosses should not have absolute immunity over certain game mechanics like boon stealing, conditions or crowd control but rather be balanced reasonably with combat mechanics that can be countered for example with defiant (can be removed), stability (which can be removed or interrupted), cleanses (that can be interrupted) or heals/invulnerability skills (that can be interrupted). A better AI and higher diversity of bosses active abilities should be the factors that make a boss more challenging rather than his superior health, damage, immunities or in the worst case gimmicks.

Ohoni and others who do not favor exclusive rewards:

Would it hugely bother you if in say 6 months to a year, they come up with an equivalently difficult and time consuming process in another type of game play and awarded legendary armor pieces that were of a different skin?

Personally, it would bother me.

If Arenanet gave away the Heritage armor sets for free just because it’s 3 years later, I would be upset. That skin is there to show that I have done a bunch of stuff in Guild Wars 1. That game is still running, so go play Eye of the North if you want it.

Same thing for raider rewards. Prestige skins are there to represent their exploits in the game’s world, so if you want the items, do what they did.

What I would be okay with would be if they made a slightly modified version of the skin and made that one easier to obtain. So you can still tell who did the raid and who didn’t.

I think a few players got used to having access to all the skins due to Guild Wars 2’s failure to provide players with enough prestige skins, but the game was clearly advertised as rewarding with such skins, just like Guild Wars 1 did.

I think they realized their failure to have enough prestige skins by 2014 when they put those those new PvP and LS armor sets, and with Heart of Thorns’ legendary armors it looks like they’re finally getting on with the program. I expect the 2 new armor sets announced on the website to be prestige skins rewarding specific feats.

I wouldn’t care if they put GW1 skins or any other skin in the game as reward for something you do in GW2. Most of the people who want exclusive gear only want to brag about it. Why does one need to know if someone has done a raid and if one hasn’t? Sounds like someone needs to prove other people that they’re better than others in the game but why? That I really can’t understand.

Yes, GW2 needs lfg filters. The filters should at least have: stats, profession, level, traits, achievement points. There should also be this dps meter so leaders could observe if one is slacking or playing the profession wrong. At the best there should also be keybind checkers etc. to identify if one is a filthy clicker and of course an autokick feature if one tries to chance gear and traits during the instance.

So you are suggesting that rewards should be balanced on how much time is consumed doing any content (that you say is viable as gameplay activity?) but not on players ability or dedication?

It should be based on a certain combination of these things. If a game type is completely effortless then it shouldn’t necessarily be massively rewarding, but so long as the activity involves a certain amount of player attention and interaction, then yes, it should be as rewarding as any other. Having higher skills as a player should not entitle you to superior rewards, that’s just something you do, and that’s great, but that shouldn’t mean that someone who can’t do those things shouldn’t be able to get the stuff they want. It might take them longer, but they should have a path.

The thing is SW chestfarm train isn’t any different from event karma train in terms of ones effort.

Ehh, chest farming takes less effort, but I agree that both are fairly minimal engagement activities.

So would it really be any different if the event train person got the legendary armor as reward from doing the events and the chestfarm person got it by buying it with gold in about same amount of time.

Yes, but really neither should be eligible, or at least if they are eligible it would be a vry long road. Events that are part of the legendary train should be only the kind that involve relatively high player engagement, nothing overly challenging, but a bit more than “tag the mob and go afk until its over.” You did understand that my point was that karma was also a devalued currency, right? Both gold and karma are hopeless at this point. Any currency that would be used going forward needs to be a new one where everyone starts at zero.

This I can agree with. I just would like to see that some content that requires considerable amount of dedication to it would have relatively higher chance at gaining the legendary gear than the other which required alot less dedication. I think its very bad for the player if whatever he does has about the same rewards per time consumed even if the other content was alot harder or took ones dedication to next level. It only encourages people to do these karma or chest trains. I would never lock rewards behind hard content though, exclusive “account-bound” rewards (especially gear) only make the community more toxic and stoke bragging.

To me when I’m reading your comments on different areas it’s starting to sound like you want gear and rewards to be locked behind things YOU enjoy in the game. Trading not play style?

No, it should just be locked through actual gameplay activities, including many that I do not personally enjoy. Trading, at least the way it’s implemented in GW2, is a grossly distorted mechanism, like Silverwastes farming. It interacts poorly with any other element. if you want it to be treated as equivalent to actual gameplay, then it would need to be balanced as if it were gameplay, in that highly effective methods of earning money would need to be nerfed. Is that something you would like to see happen? In any case, it’s a bit too late to even try that now, a bit like Karma. The existing gold markets have become so distorted that there is no way to fix them and so they should be ignored whenever possible by future content.

So you are suggesting that rewards should be balanced on how much time is consumed doing any content (that you say is viable as gameplay activity?) but not on players ability or dedication? The thing is SW chestfarm train isn’t any different from event karma train in terms of ones effort. I have to disagree on this. I don’t really see gear as a trophy and thus should be tradeable. Trading is pretty much a play style as well and should be one of the ways to obtain the said gear. It would also benefit those who already have the gear as they could sell the parts they don’t need anymore.

There should always be ways to convert unwanted bits into something useful, but no it should not be trading (ideally), and trading is not a play style. and I do agree that gear is not a trophy, but that doesn’t mean that it should come without any effort. That is the whole point of the reward cycle, that you need to put forth effort to earn things. So long as that effort is enjoyable, then it’s a good gaming experience. If there is no effort in the game that you do find enjoyable, then maybe it’s not the right fit for you.

Like Legendary Weapons, any other Legendary item should be tradeable on the TP. Otherwise, what’s the point of doing content over again? One and done should not be a design in raids. We should get rewarded for repeating content too. This is also how we all get to play any content in game and still have access to items. Multiple avenues of acquisition wouldn’t be required if everything flowed through the TP.

No. There need to be multiple methods so that there can be multiple ways to EARN the armors, not so that raiders can make huge profits selling off unwanted armor to everyone else. Legendaries should not be a revenue stream. There should be ongoing reasons to complete the content, but it should be in the form of standard loot that is comparable to other activities.

To me when I’m reading your comments on different areas it’s starting to sound like you want gear and rewards to be locked behind things YOU enjoy in the game. Trading not play style? nonsense. It has been in every mmo out there as long as I can remember. Some mmos even offer character progression towards trading. Who is talking about effortless rewards? How is getting gold and items (that you don’t want) from different sources of the game and buying the gear (that you want) not considered as “putting in effort”?

This is actually very bad direction to head towards. Every piece of gear in a mmo should always stay tradeable. What you should not be able to trade are titles, achievements or used gear. I can’t really see your point why nontradeable legendaries are somewhat better?

My stance on this is that I would prefer Legendaries to be non-tradable IF they offer a wide varieties of ways to earn them to account for multiple play styles. If they force you to raid to get them then I support being able to trade them as a slightly less evil option.

Ultimately though, I don’t think high value items should be tradable because you should have to earn them through some form of direct tasks yourself, they should not be about how much gold you have. In a different economy that might be ok, but this game’s economy is completely dysfunctional due to gem selling and TP-barons, and can’t be trusted to deal in anything important. The market should only be used to trade consumables, materials, and other generic goods.

I have to disagree on this. I don’t really see gear as a trophy and thus should be tradeable. Trading is pretty much a play style as well and should be one of the ways to obtain the said gear. Those were only examples I gave there and tried to keep them in same category in dedication. As many people here actually want the legendary armor to be more of an achievement than a milestone. I would see open world content here as par with spvp reward track or wvw badges/rank (edge of the mists).

Yeah, but the thing is, the people happy with Legendary armor locked behind Raids are likely the same sort of people who are hardcore into PvP or WvW. Rewaring them is a bit like saying "We have heard that you guys are upset about hedgefund managers making the most money, so we’ve decided to also give money to yacht aficionados and a people who own at least three homes. I hope that satisfies you peasants. "

It is healthy in an online game to have things that only the top players can acquire. I believe this actually motivates ALL players, including those who aren’t “top” players, to play the game more, because there is something symbolic of your status that you can strive towards, even if you never get there.

Nope. Common misconception, but total trickledown nonsense.

I’m talking about dedication and effort here. The real life comparison is a bit fallacious as we can’t really tell if the owner of three houses ever put any effort in having them, he could be one of those who guessed few numbers correctly. If legendary armor was obtainable from a less effort needing content like open world event chains or spvp reward tracks it should take considerable amount of more time in comparison to one getting it from a raid or higher tier spvp.

I would personally like to see legendary armor obtainable in the three “game types” (for example): spvp (higher level tier), pve (raids) and wvw (achievements). The best would be to make the pieces and the final armor also tradeable in trading post. This would make it possible to get by many types of gameplay. And please don’t hate me for the fact that trading is and should always stay as a part of every mmo.

Legendary armor / weapons should NEVER be tradable !

It is one of the BIGGEST mistakes a.net ever made in gw2.

Hence, new legendaries will NOT be tradable, not even the precursors.

Wow, considering you can cap every craft within 4 hours I would say crafting is perfect in GW2. It’s fast and painless, that is one part of the game they definitely got right.

I’m sorry, I’m just not interested in how “easy” it is. I don’t want to do it at all. From what I can see in guides there are even daily timers on crafting the ascended mats (which is disgusting).

well, isn´t that cool? So you only have to do it for about 10 seconds a day then.

You guys can defend the crafting system all you like. I think it’s great that so many of you enjoy it. And yes, it is better than most MMOs out there. But I find it interesting that none of you have addressed my main concern:

Why shouldn’t ascended level gear (full sets) be obtainable from looting and just playing the game? Sure, there is a very small chance to loot the gear in Fractals, but nobody here would seriously argue that it is a viable alternative to gearing in full ascended.

Those of you who are in a position to loot a lot of ascended gear most definitely crafted your way to that point. Which is the problem…imo.

Would it help you guys if lootable ascended gear was really ugly so that everyone could see all of your hard work over the years as a crafter?

As I stated earlier: all gear and materials should be tradeable.

Alternatively, you can purchase the product of the time-gated materials if you aren’t interested in crafting them for yourself (Bolt of Damask etc).

I should add, I’m also not interested in the Trading Post.

I’d like to loot gear or win it from my accomplishments in combat.

The crafting system isn’t all that bad in this game but it sure is another minigame which only involves spending of gold to get it leveled. Don’t like trading post though? “I See No Tomarrow” I agree with you. having the elite stuffs is meant for the Elite, not for the little kids that want it easy all they way.

Just saying Elite is elite not basic or even intermediate. its elite, lvl 80 stuffs, if you cant look for your spec points(that’s kitten easy), then you don’t really need Elite specs. just place the core game and get bored of the same shazz.

Adding new rewards on old content isn’t really considered new. I’d rather play new content which rewards me the new elite specialization than grind the same old stuff we have been doing for 3 years.

To some extent this would be interesting and it’s kinda what I expected when they announced elite specs: that we would unlock them somehow within HoT similar to how one unlocks the ability to switch between secondary professions in GW1. But that’s not what’s going to happen and wanting it now is likely fruitless. If they add it in the future, that’s great, but this is the system we’re getting when they ship HoT.

And it’s not that bad. Revenants who aren’t lucky enough to read 80 tomes of knowledge will have to participate in the mainland Tyria content before exploring HoT. Getting hero points from central Tyria doesn’t take too long as it doesn’t require actual map completion to just grab the points.

Plus as I said earlier, there will probably be ways to get hero points in HoT itself once it comes out.

I can see your point here but I’d really like to see real content in HoT rather than pseudo crap we’ve already seen. As in comparison they could scale fractals to level 1000 and add new rewards and tell me it’s new. It wouldn’t really feel like it though.

Specializations and skills should go in the leveling category anyways. Anyone remember that weird change to traits that required you to do different tasks to get the trait, or you could alternatively buy them off with skill points and gold? That was actually very bad direction to head towards. It really was just pseudo content which Anet added there so it would feel there was real content added but it really was just todos that were already in the game. It was just a dumb idea to give people something to grind on instead of putting in something actually new. Contentwise rich doesn’t necessarily mean time consuming. Gladly though that horrible “feature” was deleted. Hero challenges make more sense, but the requirement for how many the new ones cost should be in par with the old ones or otherwise it feels exactly the same.
