Rift even included a nice wedding ceremony where you could invite up to 200 people. The rewards were strictly cosmetic although attending and participating in a wedding counted as achievements.
The reason zerk-groups work is because the DPS is so high that the target/s die before they can harm the group. Currently, having the entire team in zerk is over-kill. It’s FUN over-kill, but not really required to make the team successful — non-zerk pugs are just a tad slower and less fun.
I understand why DPS and Zerk works. I would also concur that if you advertise in your LFG request for certain types of players that should be honored. But what I most vehemently disagree with is that this is FUN. It is not challenging and it is certainly not FUN. For me, strategy and tactics and a well-fought tooth-and-nail experience is FUN. Sadly, that’s almost never the case in this game.
Which is why I find myself playing the game less and less. If it were not for the fact that the game does not have a monthly subscriber fee and I have friends who play the game I would probably quit altogether. And this is why I played Deep Fritz last night in a game of chess. To me, that was FUN, even though after a couple of hours I lost the game. (I always set the computer to be slightly better than me.)
If they’re totally incapable of fixing this issue then perhaps it would be easier to compensate instead. If one toon is doing DPS to a target they are 100% effective. If two toons are attacking the same target they are only 50% effective. And if five folks are attacking the same target in say a dungeon then they should be 20% effective. Now THAT would promote build diversity.
In my very subjective humble opinion I enjoyed Guild Wars 1 more. Yet it’s very difficult to compare the two games as they are in so many ways different. And therein lies the rub for some folks, as Guild Wars 2 is not the true sequel that we were promised and/or hoped for.
I still visit the classic game from time to time but alas my friends have moved on to Guild Wars 2 and almost all new content and development for Guild Wars 1 has ceased.
I have to respectfully disagree with the OP. These bells and whistles are part of the game. Their value and prestige would be diminished if others could just hide them..
I think I’ve felt both frustration and optimism about this game. The way I think about it is this….
Playing Guild Wars 2 is like taking your second-choice date to prom.
You’re happy. You will have a good time. There’s nothing wrong with your date. But it wasn’t the date you really wanted. And the more you think about wanting that other person, the less happy you’ll be.
I think most of us wanted more from GW2.
This post has haunted me and I just have to say that yes, this reflects how I feel as much as any other statement I have ever seen on these forums.
It may have been unrealistic to expect Guild Wars 2 to have been a true successor to the first Guild Wars. But they made so many promises and then there was the manifesto. It was such a harsh, brutal letdown when we finally experienced the game for ourselves.
Like you said, it’s not so much that the game is bad, it’s that the game could have been so much better.
I bought the game, made three or four gem purchases….
Then they announced “Ascended” and a new tier of weapons, armor and trinkets.
I haven’t spent a penny of real money on this game ever since and I never will.
No monthly fee.
Is there any effort being made to integrate the Destruction of LA into the larger game?
Havens are still protecting trade to LA. Lionguards in the world are protecting trade routes to LA. They allude to this in chat, in heart letters, in flavor text. At this time, they are blissfully unaware of any pressing problems in LA.
Also, flavor text in general. I laughed for 5 minutes when the Claypool Villager announced they wanted to move to LA “to be safer”.
A world changing event should… change the world perhaps?
This. Contradictions like this make the Living World seem like a facade. My friends and I were discussing this very issue over the weekend.
As Leo said, that IS griefing. You are purposefully doing something to ‘harm’ another player.
You are all absolutely correct. In retrospect I truly regret my actions. The situation also exemplifies just how difficult it would be to discern the true reasons and motivations of someone who is AFK.
Without knowing the details of your system it’s difficult to determine what would work best for you and how much of an fps increase you would enjoy. One thing is certain, GW2 benefits from CPU power more than GPU power.
The logical next step for you would be to advance to a Sandy Bridge E chip. Assuming this is even compatible with your system the 3930K is the best chip that fits within your budget. Also, don’t forget the advantages of overclocking so long as you can keep your system cool enough.
I found someone downed at a particularly dangerous location so after mostly clearing the area I revived him. The toon didn’t move, and there was no other indication that there was anyone behind the wheel. So I opted to spend some time letting the toon die and be revived several times. The gift of an entirely broken set of armor.
Gee, sounds like someone is having a bad day. The OP wants a refund on unspent gems purchased with real money. Looks like ArenaNet has a policy to handle just that situation. To be honest I’m both surprised and impressed.
You could use the gems to buy items that aren’t account-bound and give them to your guild mates. Minis come to mind.
I used a Toymaker’s Bag from way back to transfer a soulbound back item. Check your bank to see if you have any of those.
Sorry to see this happening; glad to see this thread so that I know it wasn’t just me.
Speak for yourself. I had far more fun in GW1 than I’ve had so far in GW2. I’m still waiting because the potential is there. Soon enough alternatives will be on the market, and lots of folks won’t have to wait – they’ll just move on.
Amen!
Scarlet sabotaged the release.
I have zero love for this kind of progression. When ArenaNet announced Ascended Gear I vowed never to spend a cent of real money in the game ever again. I have held true to that promise. If they raise the level cap then forget it. Good-bye and good riddance.
That doesn’t mean they are bad people.
I strongly disagree. It’s perfectly fine to play the game the way you want to. It’s another thing altogether to be rude, callous and mean-spirited to other players if they don’t share your world view.
The word “bad” doesn’t even come close to the correct adjective to describe these folks.
If you join a party that is tailored for speed runs and you refuse to take part in that, then you deserve a kick for wasting everyone’s time and being selfish.
If you join a group that specifically advertised it was looking for uber players and/or speed runs that’s one thing. That’s not what the OP is talking about here.
When I post a LFG for a dungeon, I always specifically put “No elitist kitten bags.” at the end. Group usually fills pretty fast lol.
I will definitely have to be on the lookout for these.

I have seven toons and I play them all roughly the same amount. I have no alts in the traditional sense of the term.
When it’s the players and not the equipment that matters most this game will finally have become interesting. The computer A.I. is simply too dumb, and the encounters are too rudimentary. A glass cannon assault should always fail but instead it’s the current uber-Meta and nothing else really matters.
I played a game of chess on my computer last weekend and as usual I set its playing strength to always be a tad better than my own. It was an exciting, tooth and nail experience. Guild Wars 2 will never ever come close to this. I still play the game for a variety of reasons but certainly not for the strategy and tactics.
Let’s see…
(1) Reduce Warrior damage by 99%
(2) Reduce Warrior boon duration by 99%
(3) Reduce Warrior health by 99%
(4) Replace all Warrior utility skills with the Cower emote.
(5) Replace the Warrior’s voice regardless of race with that of a crying baby.
And now let’s start talking about how we’re going to nerf Warriors.
With the exception of Summon Flesh Golem I would gladly swap out the elite for all my toons with an ordinary utility skill. There’s something fundamentally wrong about that. And of course the only Necromancer elite that works underwater, Plague, kills all my remaining kitten minions.
Complete, total, and utter fail.
Neural, you brought a tear to my eye.
Whatever happened to the Manifesto?
Per Donari’s “piano playing” comment. No doubt that you have to give a little more thought and a lot more key pressing to play an Elementalist. I personally find that a reason to play the profession more — but your mileage may vary.
Last I checked if you bought every eye on the trading post you still wouldn’t have enough to craft one Immobulus. Proof enough that we need more giant eye drops.
Be forewarned that these are probably the hardest classes to level. They both become far more potent as you approach level 80.
That said, the mesmer is probably the more coveted class at level 80. It has the Portal skill for Jumping Puzzles and a couple of great Elites for parties. It also has a greater variety of builds if you’re into that sort of thing.
I like my elementalist as well, and it’s the only toon I have with a full set of ascended weapons. One important tip is that when you switch elements it counts as a weapon swap for various traits and sigils.
Consider visiting the forums for both classes and best of luck in your choice.
Don’t go overboard buying them by the way. They’ve recently been nerfed to have a thirty minute cooldown. Still quite useful though. However, once purchased they’re soulbound.
In a span of less than one week a friend of mine received The Chosen and a Wupwup Weapon Chest from opening Tri-Key Chests.
On the other hand, I have never seen a Giant Eye drop. I have seen a handful of Black Lion keys, my best dye drop was White, and as mentioned above I finally saw my first and only precursor drop.
I’ve been playing since the beta and this week I FINALLY had my first precursor drop, a Howl. Not necessarily the one I was hoping for; but it was nonetheless a pleasure to see. Occurred while I was guesting on another server. Just happened to see on GW2 Stuff that the Inquest Golem Mark II was up and joined in on a whim.
RNG can be even more random than you think.
As an experiment a while back I visited many different servers during prime time hours to see how the trains differed between them. The first obvious difference was which champions and in which order they were encountered. The second was the attitude. I noticed that most of the well-known heavily populated servers were ruder, more egotistical and far more mean-spirited then the less populated ones.
I will refrain from naming servers to avoid a flame war. I am happy to point out that my own server was (and still is) one of the nicer ones.
The trains are no less legit than any other activity in the game. They’re not an exploit. They have already been stealth nerfed once with very little impact. The problem is not with the trains but with the game. Give people something else to do that is more rewarding with as little preparation, peer pressure and requirements and the trains would mostly disappear.
Not during normal play. I just usually buy or craft 25 of the cheapest foods imaginable and eat them rapid fire. Q.E.D.
If they want some ideas for new armor and weapon skins look no further than Guild Wars 1. That said, I have a strange feeling that even bringing up the original game in conversation is grounds for termination. They don’t want to be reminded that the original game, while lacking in some ways, was so superior to its sequel in so many other ways.
Creation of a duplicate ascended item should be allowed but a nice warning popup message would be a welcome feature. Should take a developer all of five minutes effort.
There are definitely certain facets of the game where the Warrior is way too OP. I have seven toons and none of them are Warriors. I refuse to play the game in tutorial mode.
Emphasis mine.
You’re hardly qualified to criticise a profession if you never play it.
I did and I deleted him.

Of course, this topic has been discussed many times before. It’s been recently announced that one of the Warrior’s overpowered skills, Healing Signet, is being altered so that the passive mode isn’t as effective. In turn the active ability is being improved to compensate. This will help.
Hundred Blades is a skill that really needs a massive nerf — but only in PvE. Against another player there are many ways to anticipate and deal with the skill. But against the stupid A.I. it works at maximum efficiency all the time.
Be prepared for backlash from the Warriors who zealously guard their class from criticism, constructive and otherwise.
That’s a really bad habit for ANet to get us players into, though, because eventually, we’ll forget to go back to GW2.
LOL. That probably explains some of the folks who end up AFK.
With TTS I usually arrive about an hour early. After I’m situated where I need to be and receive my marching orders I put TeamSpeak/game on speaker and do other things until I hear the signs that the encounter is about to start. Not exactly “fun” but I try to be “productive”.

It’s rare, but I too have seen ruined materials if harvested during combat. Certainly nothing new and definitely not a nerf. Just a touch of realism in an otherwise unrealistic game.
Oh…. I used the Ogre Pet one on my Ranger for double pet fun! The fire ele comes in handy too.
That’s why my ranger uses Runes of the Ogre.
They never, ever said it would be a part of this patch. Late March or early April was the target, along with most of the other proposed skill and balance changes.
Gee, all my high-level toons have a few powders and whistles. I only use them when the situation really calls for some extra help. I never realized that some folks spammed them until I started reading these posts. Looks like they were way overdue for a nerf; although I give a thumbs down for pretending that the primary reason for the extended cooldown was graphics-related.
There are certainly some very unpopular traits out there. Sometimes though you might find yourself in a peculiar situation where they might be helpful. For example, I recently used the Elementalist Arcane Abatement trait to reach somewhere that otherwise would have taken me much longer without falling. As it was one of the switchable traits it didn’t require me to reset them. I wouldn’t have used it otherwise. It was a temporary one-time moment.
We’re actually missing a lot of emotes, not just this one.
Very common complaint about the kits. My engineer is a dual pistol pure gadget lass for that very reason.
