while thief needs to constantly disengage as soon as he gets hit by some random condispam
This pretty much sums up thief sPVP at the moment. And it’s not just against D/D Ele’s. Nothing quite like getting taken down to 10% health in a fight where they didn’t even know you were there.
I’m surprised this post has stuck around so long. They’ve been deleting a lot of the D/D ele complaint threads.

I swear to God necros will complain about anything.
Hello. My name is Iconik. I also go by Oh Hey Girl. I’m the team manager of tPVP hopeful Girlfriends from Highschool [exGF]. We currently have 2 slots open for a meta Mesmer and D/D Ele.
I’m going to make this short and sweet, because what we’re looking for is basically the same thing that anyone is looking for:
1. Team cohesion
2. Can take direction
3. Knows rotations
4. Knows their respective professions
5. Has experience in a team setting in GW2 PVP
That’s all it takes. We aren’t looking for egos. We aren’t looking for jerks. We’re looking for likable, fun individuals that know how to kick butt and want to win. We’re currently practicing and scrimming to do some AG tourney’s and beyond. This is a team with serious aspirations. They aren’t interested in wasting time. Every game, every scrim, every fight is a lesson.
Please contact me at Iconik.8712 if you are interested in trying out. I really hope to hear from you.
Ambush and Thieves Guild with Rock Dog is hilarious. I run P/P on my stream quite often as well and melt stuff. If this class didn’t rely so much on having Shadowstep and SR in sPVP there’d be a ton of room for fun, but sadly you almost definitely need those two skills.
I’ll be there for sure.
Thanks for your advice and build. And you’re welcome for showcasing P/P. I stream it quite a bit and it’s soooo much fun. I don’t think people understand how devastating it can be. I mean, right now, no one knows how to react so I think that has a lot to with it but whatever….I love it.
Well I do a lot of Silverwastes farming so I’m not actually ALONE per say.
SW is different from Orr farming in that you are not trying to tag mobs that die to a sneeze, and instead you are actually trying to do the most damage you can to succeed the event. Therefore staff should not be your main weapon for SW but you can use it for swiftness on the run.
I was thinking GS/Staff then? Would that not be viable? Got any build ideas?
Well I do a lot of Silverwastes farming so I’m not actually ALONE per say.
Guardian was the first thing I ever rolled and she’s largely gone ignored for nearly two years now. Finding a dungeon build is easy enough, but I spend a lot of time outside of dungeons and sPVP doing SW, Dry Top, Orr and the like.
I’ve searched but couldn’t find a suitable “running around the map farming events and stuff” build. Any one have any ideas?
I’m seriously thinking about rerolling, sadly. As it stands right now, a thief has to be 100% on his dodges, 100% on his skill usage and have 0 errors in a fight in order to give him a chance. And even then you aren’t guaranteed a thing. I feel you have to work twice as hard to get a kill.
I can’t beat them 1v1 anymore. If I do, it’s always close. You essentially have to beat them twice. I try to CC chain them with their fear. It’s like I’m alive one second then at 10% HP the next and I have no clue where it all came from. Those soft targets that we always excelled at dropping in a teamfight aren’t droppable anymore.
Anyway. WTF do I do against Necros? Is it just me? Am I approaching it wrong? What changed so drastically that I can’t kill one anymore, or if I do I have to reset the fight 10 times. Can’t take too much more of this.
Backstab crits are fine. They are part of a burst that you have to sit around and wait for because when your burst isn’t up, you’re just a kitten warrior with no survivability. It’s high risk.
Thief is a mess. This is just one of the reasons. I’ve often thought why in the hell thieves having some of the lowest HP was even a thing. You can’t really say that a thieves way to deal with damage is to not deal with it when mobility was turkittenfed. Couple this with the fact that I can get out-stealthed by a mesmer, and you’re starting to see that ANet really has no cohesive plan on how to deal with the Thief profession.
Outside of our initial burst, we’re an easily handled kitten melee range fighter that gets insta-gibbed by dmg that wasn’t even really meant for us in the first place. I got on my warrior today and practiced REAL damage, survivability and mobility and had the time of my life.
I just feel that there’s a TON of dmg going on out there and Thief damage is only really good when you have all your cooldowns ready for your Black Powder > Heartseeker > Steal burst combo (or whatever one you like to use). In between these combos you’re just a sitting duck in a teamfight trying to escape the 834 condi’s accidentally applied to you through AOE or getting 100-0 hosed by rampaging warrior.
There are so many traits on other classes that are basically elites that I don’t think lowering the CD on the Haste buff from Flanking Strikes is too much to ask for since it’s pretty conditional to even get the buff.
Everyone knows once the Thief is out of stealth he’s the easiest target. Even a shadowstepped Thief is an easy kill. You could SR, but it’s not really stealth if you KNOW WHERE they stealthed (its confined – which is silly – I’d love a wall like Mesmers or even a decoy). I don’t mind change in meta/PVP in a game as long as classes aren’t completely left behind, but that’s the way it feels right now. Thieves are a one pump chump where you have to ask everyone nicely to hold off on fighting while you wait for your combo to come back up. Everyone has burst combos, but they still have damage in between burst combos. I’m not saying that spamming 1 isn’t dmg, but it’s awfully silly. Even with +200 power from revealed, you’re still a sitting duck.
Anyone? This isn’t a HUGE change, but it could help those in between periods a little bit.
Acrobatics is the way to go for this. I understand that a lot of people are whining about that trait line right now, but I was running it the other day in sPVP and surviving fights I had no right surviving. Sadly, most of the recommendations you got in this thread are all conditional.
sheesh a P/P build in PvE… so much bad in this thread. Opponents that ignore you in the middle of a team fight while they allow you to pew pew. Excuse me if i question the quality of players you have highlight matches of. Sure you can throw of people who expect a different playstyle but once someone realizes you main P/P it is VERY EASY to counter thus “trash”.
Unless you’re doing dungeons, you can P/P in PVE all you want. I tried it out in SW a bit tonight just for the heck of it and found it to be a lot of fun. A lot of us have been using the same boring meta’s for so long, a little change is nice.
For Dungeons, the meta has already been set by Nike. So just use that. There’s no need to call people bad for wanting to do something a little different.
There’s no difference in people allowing you to pew-pew in a teamfight as a P/P Thief than there is allowing a Mesmer, Ranger, Engi or Ele doing it. You don’t allow them to pew-pew do you? Nope. You adapt. You hardswitch targets. You prioritize. There’s no difference at all…except this time you have a P/P thief to look out for as well.
Again, when you have 1000s of Thieves all either running S/D or D/P, it’s just as easy to counter that as it would be to counter a P/P. We all saw D/P and S/D last meta all meta. People knew how to counter it…but you still ran it didn’t you? Any build when used a lot can be countered. Every point you’ve made against P/P can be made against every meta build in the game.
The single target burst from a safe distance with this build is devastating. With correct positioning, knowing when to reset and using your interrupt/stun correctly, you’re just as much a threat as any build we saw last meta.
From stealth going into Sneak Attack > Unload > Steal > Unload is just plain murder. Switch to bow to cleave when necessary and move across the map quickly. I went into this build just wanting to troll but after several 2v1 and 3v1’s later, I realized it’s got some power. Adjust your gameplay and get out of the last meta frame of mind and you’ll find you’re pretty effective. I don’t expect Magictoker to be using this build anytime soon, but it’s a lot more fun then getting blasted by AOE in melee range.
Have fun with it. Or don’t.
(edited by Iconik.8712)
Here it is. Even getting targeted in a teamfight I never felt like I was out of control. This build is about 70% positioning. If you aren’t positioning yourself in a fight correctly, you’re going to have a bad time. I had several 2v1’s tonight where it wasn’t just me “pew pewing” largely going ignored as a poster earlier said. It’s quite a bit of fun.
No one is saying that this build will be the thing to do in a tourney. It’s fun, it’s effective and you will mow crap down like whoa. It’s time to think outside of the box in regards to thieves. No one likes a one trick pony.
Have fun.
http://intothemists.com/guides/6013-thief_pp_spvp_mow_em_down
Well. I’m streaming this right now and so far so good. I think the best part right now is that people aren’t expecting it. They think I’m just a D/P thief, then they get absolutely mowed down in about 4 seconds. The Fury on Rage runes is good in a teamfight. So far I’m actually kind of digging this.
OK. Tried this out, but not his build. All you really need is Ankle Shots and the rest is just the psuedo-meta flying around since the patch. It’s actually kind of fun. You most definitely can mow people down but forget 1v1’s. You really shine in a teamfight. Approach the match a little differently than you’re used to and you can actually have some fun with this build.
So where’s the build lol
Yeah I have no clue what in the hell was going through their mind with some of these changes. Just seems to totally bassackwards. PVE is a ton of fun still, but spvp (I don’t WvW anymore) you have to do 10x the work of other classes to secure the kill if you’re initial engage combo didn’t 1-2 shot.
Isn’t Sinister kind of a pain in the kitten to get a hold of? Are there alternatives?
IGN: Oh Hey Girl
Playstyle: sPvP/PvE
Server: Tarnished Coast
Experience with thief: Picked up Thief about 7 months ago and have played it and nothing else. I even stream my sPvP. I would say my knowledge of sPvP thieves in the last meta was fairly strong. I work on builds and have published one for the new meta. There’s always more to learn.
If this guild is active and actually helps out with all things teefy, then count me in.
If rifle is the specialization, I’m out. Played Thief forever, and I’d drop it like a bad habit. Please no rifle.
I run with this kid. It seems to work. I hate giving him credit, but it seems solid.
Day 3 with this build and it’s still testing well.
I don’t think a Venom Share in a solo queue will ever work, sadly. With friends like you were doing it’d be great. If you want to share your sPVP Venom Share, by all means, do so. I’m interested.
I just don’t feel like a lot has changed. I’ve seen some people say that we aren’t a +1’ing profession anymore but I don’t see it. I’ve been playing my Thief the way I played last meta but with a few minor changes. +1ing and between node ganking is still viable. DPS harassing and peeling are still viable goals.
I totally understand S/D Thieves being upset. I get it. It appears they’ve forced us into a D/P situation, but you can make it work with all the changes to PVP.
Our burst is good. Let’s be honest. What’s not good is being fairly squishy in melee range in a game that has a metric crap ton of what I like to call “accidental damage”. This is damage that wasn’t really intended for you. I’ve fixed some of these problems with the trait line we all seem to hate: Acrobatics. We’re no good getting burst down in half a second. You can still be the Thief you were, you just have to adapt a little differently.
I’ve always just followed meta, while occasionally finding fun troll builds just for my stream, but this time I wanted to be proactive. This build has worked for me the past 2 days and it’s removed the black cloud from the recent patch that seemed to knock the wind out of us. I didn’t go into a ton of detail in the build because you know how everything works by now.
I donno. I’m finding it fun.

I’m talking about weapon skills here. Why does Torch skill The Prestige stealth immediately, and CnD takes half a second. That half a second can mean the world. Guess I kind of figured that the Thief would be able to vanish a little quicker than a Mesmer. I’m not talking about Utility Skills here. We have those that vanish quicker, but on longer CDs. Just doesn’t make much sense to me.
None of this fixes the main issue with thief which is how easy they are to kill in any team fight setting (pvp and pve) by accidental AOE damage. You get melted and it wasn’t even done on purpose. It’s just consequential damage. I don’t think this class will ever be anything but lower tier due to its design. You’re really only ever good coming out of stealth, and since its unrealistic to always be in stealth, the times you’re fighting out of stealth you’re just a kitten warrior with no hp. Sadly, not even specialization will save it. I’ve played A LOT of thief and I feel like you need to do 100% more work for a kill than most other classes.
Whatever. Suppose it doesn’t matter much as I basically quit 3 months ago and only recently came back to see what they’d do with the patch.
First and foremost…I don’t want to play Courtyard. Ever. It’s the Call of Duty of maps. It’s for bros. I shouldn’t be forced to play it if I don’t want to. Same goes for Skyhammer. I don’t want to play it at all which really leaves me only a few maps that I’m constantly playing. Certainly, more maps need to be introduced when 2 of them are garbage and we should be allowed to exclude certain maps when we queue up.
Which brings me to the reason why I came to post. Map voting is pointless and should just be removed. If Khylo wins, why is it we end up playing Courtyard? May as well not even vote. I see this all the time. The pie chart obviously shows XXXXX winning, but the one with just a sliver end up being picked. How is this even a thing? Do I just completely misunderstand how map voting works or is this broken?
Can we please get rid of the profession based sPVP dailies and replace them with daily caps or daily kills instead? It really ruins sPVP and comps. No one wants to go up against a team with 2 rangers and 3 engis when you main only 1 class.
I just feel like there are better options for sPVP dailies that don’t completely bork team comps.
Are you talking about Immersive Combat Mode?
Yeah I’m working on 100% map complete on my 4th character and it’s actually pretty annoying. I always have to trick myself into leveling a new toon because the thought of doing map complete again always makes me not want to do it.
I’m with the OP on this and I’m a warrior. My first 80s were Engi and Guardian, but I went warrior because I literally wanted an easier melee class that just herped kitten ed her way through the game. And boy did I have a TON of fun on my warrior. I actually got my legendary on my warrior. Sadly, now I’ve grown tired of all the warriors and me being on of the faces in the multitude so I’ve gone Thief. Feel like I see a lot of these now too though. :*(
With as many telegraphs going on on the ground where you just accidentally hit melee by virtue of the fact that you just laid a skill on the ground, you’d leap out, disengage and re-engage as well.
I’m not sure where you are getting that china is not included. The presentation specifically says that profit is up on GW2 because of china…
they only made 25 million INCLUDING china’s launch.
Not really new information, we knew the game was in trouble, the devs just refuse to give the players what they want.
Oh Lord. I love this sentiment. You’re right. ANet has NO interest in pleasing it’s playerbase. They’re in business to not make money, and the obvious best route to take in achieving this insane goal is to kitten you off. Ugh.
While we’re talking about improvements for the sake of new players, I think a big opportunity for improvement would be in the conditions area of the game. Especially those conditions I have put on an enemy. Making conditions I’ve placed or someone else has placed on an enemy needs to be more visual.
As it stands now, there are just tiny boxes. I understand you can memorize what’s what, but on the flipside of that it wouldn’t hurt to make them more visual. Bigger icons for ones I’ve placed. Maybe a blue border on boons the enemy has placed on himself (I understand these are yellow generally, but putting boons underneath conditions would help immensely instead of having them share a space with conditions).
You could even color the border for the TYPE of condition that it is. Purple for dots. Red for bleeds maybe. Black for movement impairing. There’s a lot you can do to make looking at conditions on an enemy easier.
Make the soundtrack available again. PLEASE!
>The situation is pretty simple: failing the event is about 20% more rewarding (for repeat customers) than succeeding. That creates tension between those who want more stuff and those who want to do events (and get credit for LS or regional achievements)
Luckily, video games are 100% voluntary. We had a huge map doing this yesterday for 12+ hours. Every one that was with us was there voluntarily. That is to say, they were OK with the way we were doing it. If they disagreed, they were free to leave and do it their own way.
- How do you know whether anyone had “any problem” with the way the event was being done? People don’t always say.
- “They were free to leave and do it their own way” — how was this true? The farming group dominated the map.
In any case, it’s moot: the point is that there are competing incentives and, as a result, ANet’s going to change the way the event works. This would not have happened if the hard-core farmers had voluntarily chosen to give up a fraction of the maximum possible loot. Instead, ANet is going to decide and, based on past experience, we can expect that the max possible will be less than what we have seen to date.
1. Yes they do. Have you learned nothing about MMOs and the internet?
2. Because you can always find a different map. You aren’t going to get a ton of sympathy on a map that voted to all come together and do it right.
Steady….steady….steady….
You convert gems to gold then buy the T6 mats for the gifts as T6 mats have really bad drop rates. A precursor for a GS is 1400g.
Yes, but converting Gems you bought with your credit card to Gold is an entirely different matter.
Are you saying that Zerg-farmers farm Gold and convert it to Gems, then convert the Gems back to Gold? I can see how that might work, with the fluctuating exchange-rates – but I honestly can’t imagine many Zerg-farmers have the acumen to do that.
I’m saying that Anet dislikes lucrative farming and nerfs it because they’d rather you buy gems and convert them to gold to buy what you need instead of farming it.
I wasn’t justifying failing the event. We completed the event 98% of the time all day yesterday. Those that complained were free to leave. If you complete the event you have 20 minutes until respawn. In that time there was 100% farming uptime with trio, quaggan and regular champtrain.
So then I am not sure what the issue here is, if you were successfully completing the event and the timer for successfully completing the event is not changed then it really does not impact you.
It does affect me because an ANET employee said in this very thread that they’re looking to “fix” the event. Basically, they are trying to “fix” an event that is being completed legitimately. WUT?

I’m in agreement with you. Something is coming.
… they want you to struggle for loot so you eventually cave and buy gems.
Just as a matter of interest – what exactly are you buying on the Gem Store that needs the vast amounts of Gold Converted to Gems Zerg-farmers claim to make? (There are better ways to make Gold by simply ‘playing the game’, imo, but that’s another matter.)
I’ve bought nice Costume skins, new character slots, gathering tools and so forth from the Store. They’re nice to have, but they’re hardly essential – it’s not like you can buy Legendaries, extra stat-points or a big red Win Game button from there.
Getting a legendary is an extremely pricey proposition. Especially for Greatswords. You convert gems to gold then buy the T6 mats for the gifts as T6 mats have really bad drop rates. A precursor for a GS is 1400g.
Closest thing this game will ever come to a race change is an everlasting tonic for a race of your choice.that lasts 5 min and has 30 min cooldown.
Not sure you can use skills in any of those.
I cannot stress this enough. There are tons of us that are organized and dedicated to running this daily for several hours a day and doing it right. We run the event, stack up, gets tons of loot and have tons of fun. We complete the event if even one person needs the achievement. If you’re there for LS, you’ll get that too whether it fails or succeeds.
The difference here is this:
If you fail the event the respawn timer is 5 minutes.
If you complete the event the respawn timer is 20 minutes.
When you complete the event you have 20 minutes. So what happens is is that someone tags up and runs champtrain on Drake, Wurm and Troll. We wait for Quaggan Queen and Trio to pop. We do those while we wait for Coil to respawn. Once it respawns, we head there, complete it and repeat.
I absolutely do not see the issue here, other than ANET using the complaints of toxicity in those few maps as an excuse to justify them fixing the event so that we aren’t too lucrative because, again, they want you to struggle for loot so you eventually cave and buy gems.
