Y'know, I actually kinda like this patch.

Just wondering where does everyone experience these obstructed hits?
I get them every so often, usually when my grouping is mobbing a single enemy or when I attack inanimate objects. Other than these two cases, I don’t really get this problem.

If something is strafing in you can get obstructed on most of your shots.

I’ve noticed that vertical distances can increase your range somewhat, I’m not really sure if bug or feature, but it’s kind of cool sometimes.

Why do spirits "die" in combat?

in Ranger

Iggy.9482

Because otherwise it would make it imbalanced. If they didn’t die, then what would be the point of them existing in the first place? Why not just give all rangers an aura around them that gives a few players buffs?

I’ve fought against a good guardian. Was a complete and total stalemate. I took down his HP by half, he healed it back up, he took down my HP by half, I dodged and kited to fill it back up. Kept going back and forth for 5 minutes, with neither side winning. It would have kept going had that thief not shown up.

Quoting a story without any kind of backup or sharing of information isn’t going to benefit anyone. Not that I won’t take your word for it, but bragging about something would be really good if you could maybe share your build with the rest of us, if we are doing something wrong we are, but I really doubt that so very many people are getting the same results from our class because all of us are doing it wrong.

In regards to the opening strike calculations, I don’t really think you can count on your pet applying their opening strike because if you are standing at 1500 range, your pet probably isn’t going to be doing much of anything to the enemy anyways.

Downed pet res only works 50% of the time

Iggy.9482

So with the pet res skill, if you have the pet actually res to heal you, it works pretty well. However, if the pet was already alive it stays at the same health that it had before, has to run over to you, and if it dies it stops healing you.

Hopefully you can make sense of that sentence…

It depends on the individual skill level of each player, their own skill level and reactions to scenarios, and their build. A bad thief could lose whereas a good thief with the same build could slaughter the ranger every time.

Thoughts needed on gear

Iggy.9482

If you are looking to have some extra survivability while focusing primarily on damage I would probably have just gone with power/precision or power/cd gear while using the upgrade slots to get toughness and vitality.

If you already have the toughness-vitality gear, I don’t really know what to tell you as I haven’t done anything with that.

You will obviously be sacrificing damage, but it really depends on what exactly you want from your character, and how you personally play the game. You might look into Valkyrie gear.

New to Rangers, any tips on managing pets?

in Ranger

Iggy.9482

I tend to find that if I attack first, the mobs will tend to aggro me. However, this only really happens when I’m using my greatsword. If I’m using a ranged weapon stuff tends to focus my pet or me depending on the weather or something.

My thoughts on Ranger balance

in Ranger

Posted by: Iggy.9482

Iggy.9482

I would say that ranger should excel in the use of ranged weapons. I fantasize that pets can benefit you at range by assisting you by keeping enemies away/buffing you, while if you get to melee range they will fight to protect you in combat.

I didn’t pick this class to be a melee user. In fact, the reason I picked ranger rather than warrior was specifically because it should be a primarily ranged class. In the current state I would argue that we can almost be more effective as melee users than ranged, because of the fact that if you are standing next to the enemy, they don’t really move as much and my cats can kill them better.

Piercing arrows

Iggy.9482

Honestly, the skill has it’s benefits and drawbacks. I’ve recently been using a SB/GS combo, where I mainly use the GS so I don’t have the skill currently, but I would tend to say that I like it. You can control the pierce by your proximity to the enemy, and targeting the enemy in the back will always pierce what is in front, so you can get some pretty solid damage on multiple enemies that way.

Explain Sword Root?

in Ranger

Iggy.9482

If it isn’t a bug, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t need fixing, which is something that people should understand. Just because something is working as intended doesn’t immediately make it the best thing in the world that can’t ever fail.

Having to make special allowances to use the basic attack on a weapon that adds a high difficulty level to a weapon without tangible and significant benefits is, at a base level, simply bad balance. If using the weapon was extremely difficult, but it also had a large amount of potential damage/arbitrary bonus then it would be balanced. As it stands, though I find using the sword to be extremely fun, I also can’t justify using it when there are better options for damage with much less required on my part to actually get the damage.

Iggy.9482

I mainly think that they are just distancing themselves from the forums, likely encouraged by the kittentorm that occured after the last update thread. Our forum members are extremely angry at the ANet team as a whole and I don’t really think that any posts they make at this time will be of any significant benefit, unless they are going to tell us what they mean to do with our class and actually follow up on it this time, which is a dangerous prospect at best.

What ranger NEEDS

in Ranger

Posted by: Iggy.9482

Iggy.9482

What rangers REALLY need is for Anet to allocate MORE staff to handle class fixing/balancing issues!!! seriously 2 ppl is a joke…

The amount of changes that are made in each patch to various other classes would indicate to me that it probably isn’t as much a lack of time that they are restricted by, but rather a lack of prioritization. Apparently ANet has decided that ranger isn’t worth allocating the resources to fix, so they simply are going to ignore the issues.

Disabling pet

in Ranger

Posted by: Iggy.9482

Iggy.9482

Honestly, I would say that a pet disabling with stat bonus would be a good idea in only one scenario. That is to say, I think that what they should probably do is to allow us to do that for a temporary length of time, noting ahead of time that this is a “band-aid” solution while they can figure out how to make the pet system in the game better.

Iggy.9482

The “last debacle” never really should have happened. If they can’t live up to the expectation they post, they shouldn’t make the post. Any kind of continued, honest communication with us will probably work out great for cutting out the constant rage.

Honestly, if they posted that they were having trouble working with our class or something, but gave us some kind of indication that they were working on it I would be absolutely content to wait. It’s really the silence on their end after the update that frustrates me, as it indicates that they must obviously just have abandoned our class because no news is, in this case, bad news.

Perhaps if, like passive and aggressive mode, we could toggle between having the AI choose things for us and manual control? I know that sometimes I just don’t have the time to micromanage my pet while in a large battle, but other times I could really benefit from vulnerability by using the double hit on my cat, for instance.

Tips and Tricks?

in Ranger

Iggy.9482

So I recently (well, a while ago, I’m not very on top of things) found out that I still retain full control of my pets while I am downed. I use this a lot to keep enemies off of myself while I am lying on the ground healing, and I can use it to get an easier rally. That said, I notice that a lot of rangers have their pet just attack a random enemy or sit next to their downed body while they attack things.

Anyways, what tips or tricks might you all have that other rangers might benefit from knowing, or that aren’t well known?

Got kicked out of a group again :D

in Ranger

Iggy.9482

I’ve actually found that a group with a few rangers can do some things rather well. For instance, you can’t get hit by an enemy if it is constantly being knocked back.

That said, I don’t think that ranger is in a good position. Don’t start arguing with me as though I think we are the best class, whatever. Requiring several members of a class to be effective is stupid.

Change to Class Mechanic: Non-Permanent Pets

Iggy.9482

Just image how the overall game community would take all monsters hitting on the run. First was the bot-based ranger hate, next would be ‘was this change worth it?’ hate.

That monsters might one day hit on the run is simply a suggestion in an attempt to create some kind of balance to the broken pet system. All solutions will come with problems, but yeah you are likely right in that it would be very hard to control specifics if you make the pet AI work too well.

Axe or Sword?

in Ranger

Posted by: Iggy.9482

Iggy.9482

The main issue with the sword is that the auto attack bug makes it annoying. That said, I rather liked using a sword when I used one.

I really don’t like the axe all too much, it feels a little bit awkward to me and, from what I can tell (I WAS NOT RUNNING EXOTICS YET) the sword does a bit more damage.

I would probably just carry around both, since sometimes having the range is going to be nice while at other times you might want to engage straight up.

When is the next balance patch?

in Ranger

Posted by: Iggy.9482

Iggy.9482

But I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that it should really not take you over a month to come out with the amount of fixes and balance changes that you inevitably did.

“It shouldn’t take you over a month?” You know this how?

Sorry, I’m as annoyed as the lack of changes as many people are here, but this statement…this “it shouldn’t take you that long to make changes!” attitude annoys me even more.

I’m a programmer. Often, when I talk to my boss who isn’t as familiar with programs, he mentions things like “Hey, can you implement this new feature? It’s pretty simple. Shouldn’t take too long right?” And the answer is almost always no. He doesn’t know the process that goes into the design, creation, implementation, and testing of code. So what he thinks is very simple, in reality can be very difficult to implement.

Same thing with these developers. These developers don’t simply go “Oh, rangers are underpowered, lets give shortbows a 10% damage increase.” I am pretty certain they have to debate the merits of the buff, its impact on various aspect of gameplay, discuss with programmers the possibility of implementing these changes, testing while fine-tuning the changes, etc…But the thing is, no one here knows what this process is exactly.

Since you don’t know what this process entails, please don’t make silly assumptions like “oh only 15 changes? That shouldn’t take a month to implement!”

Complain about the changes? Or the lack of? Get frustrated that the changes promised weren’t implemented? Perfectly fine. But to expect certain amount of things to be done in a certain period of time WITHOUT knowing the process behind it is…very silly.

The silence from ANet is what has a lot of people frustrated. If they just told us what they planned to do, or gave us some kind of an idea of WHEN or HOW this will be done, it would help. But all we had from them were vague promises that our class wasn’t forgotten in the Halloween patch, and if this latest patch is all they have done in the time, why is it that all other classes have had multiple times the amount of changes?

I don’t want to stow my pet all the time, and I very much doubt that that will be a thing. If we could have just ONE THING out of the next patch, I would probably want it to be that I want my pet to walk next to me. At all times. If I jump up a 8 inch ledge, that doesn’t mean my pet should run around the bend past the 2 dozen enemies and a champion. I would rather have pets look stupid and float around then be a constant cause of my deaths.

Rangers should be able to reveal thieves

in Ranger

Iggy.9482

No class should have a skill specifically made to counter another class.

This is a fair point, but the problem is still valid and rangers still don’t have anything unique or useful.

Regardless, thieves are rather broken with their stealth, and something probably should be changed to add a counter.

Why Do People Dislike Their Rangers?

Instead of copying what other people do, maybe you should try experimenting until you find a play style that’s fun and interesting to you. I’ve already shared a few of the builds that work for me and given details on how I play those builds.

I’m not going to spend my time making a video to teach you how to play the class too. If you can’t make a build/play style work, try something else. If you enjoy the class, experiment until you find something that works for you. If you don’t enjoy the profession, go make something else.

Seems like a no brainer…

It’s not a no brainer. People here all enjoy the class and want to play the styles that they find fun and interesting, but because most of the styles are sub-par compared to other classes they’re pidgeonholed into a condition damage SB build.

Going along with this, rangers can be interesting to play. The main issue, however, is that they are outclassed in whatever they are doing, regardless of what they are doing. The ranger doesn’t excel at anything and is generally worse than another class at doing pretty much anything.

Trap Detonation

Part of the problem with just throwing traps is that many times I don’t want to get that close, or I can’t because there is stuff in the way. The trap throwing range isn’t that far compared to your range if you are using a bow, especially if you have an increased range longbow.

I actually enjoyed my time as a ranger until I reached around level 50 or so. It was at that point that, as the game became more challenging and I noticed more things, I understood how bad the pet AI really is. Your pet will not attack while the target is moving, which is fine assuming that the enemy is attacking your pet, but enemies also stop attacking your pet after you reach a certain, seemingly arbitrary point in the game. Also, my pet commonly aggros extra enemies because the pathing keeps it relatively far away from the player and it also walks in weird patterns.

Pets no longer holding aggro

in Ranger

Iggy.9482

I’ll chime in here, I’m a level 80 ranger with a mixture of gear. I did a bit of testing earlier and found that regardless of how far away I sent my pet (if you target a really far enemy and manually attack it) the mob would attack my pet until it reached a certain amount of health (somewhere around 50%) , at which point the enemy would just come right at me, even from what I estimate to be a range of 2000. This is extremely infuriating because of the bad pet AI and it more than halves my potential damage.

Are rangers in really as bad of shape as they're being made out to be?

in Ranger

Posted by: Iggy.9482

I wouldn’t recommend ranger to anyone. Other classes do much more damage and the combat is not very interesting. In WvW you can’t compete with anyone really, and in PvE your role is rather limited and other classes do more damage and have more sustain.

Your pet will tank for you for a while, but it has gotten to the point where for me, most things ignore my pet after a few attacks and just come screw me over anyways.
