Season 1 | Lack of Major Male Characters!

JGBarbarian.3579

(Males don’t -need- more game heroes… there are countless, countless, countless of them)

I fundamentally disagree.

Everyone needs heroes, well written characters that exemplify virtuous traits. The vast majority of heroes in video games may be male, but how many of them are actually well written? The proper answer to a genre that is skewed in a certain direct is not an equally skewed backlash, it is ascension. It is rising above the current model and creating a greater work with well written characters from many archetypes to make the best story possible.

We need good female heroes. We need good male heroes. We need good heroes of various ages, ethnicities, vocations, and personality types. And we will never, ever reach a point when we do not need heroes.

Everyone does. So, less male ones (86% of the time are protagonists according to the study linked above), and more needed ones — you know, the groups of people who don’t have a lot of heroes representing them. The ones that are underneath that 86% take more priority from my perspective, as… well, males get this huge bucket full of chocolate raisins, whereas females get slightly more than a tenth of that. Other groups less.

My point is: There’s so many male leads, so many strong males, so many Mary Sue “Good at everything” males, that giving screentime to female characters, working and spending time on female characters, is more important because of how females lack those heroes to begin with. And it might shift the incredibly sexist attitudes that pervade the gaming community in general…. well, one can hope.

There are tons of other underrepresented groups in media as well, and they do, to me, take more precedence on the basis that they aren’t on equal footing with what’s already out there for the (yes) privileged group of people who have just about everything catered specifically to them.

I don’t understand you. You want a mmorpg virtual world to be only for women and only certain males because they are underepresented in another games? Are you serious? You know why some games are so successfull and why some hero style is overepresented? Maybe because that is what the majority of the gamers wanted? I know that today gaming is expanding, but you would really like for people that want those heroes to simply put their money in to some other game? That is like putting a wall and saying “we accept only traumatized/submissive males here, you have to be how we want or leave”. Would that be smart? Would you be happy in that type of closed, selective, not very much plural world?

Addition: An mmorpg is a game of its own kind and specially guild wars 2, with the intention of beign inclusive of all people. Is a game of interactions between many many players, a virtual world. I am not against you having your paradise free of macho heroes but is it smart for that to be an mmorpg that takes so much time to create and requires a big amount of customers to be involved in a long period of time? I can answer that I know an example but in the other way around, Age of Conan never interested females (almost none) because over representation of the hero you hate and I like and I think it was a mistake. Why? It was a mmorpg, to survive it has to bring a wide type of players and if it alienates a group it is not smart because there is no mmo without many players. Going back to GW2 now: I am starting to feel alienated by the story, like this world does not want me. Should I silently take my money elsewhere? I am alone in that sentiment or there are others (lots or few)?

I don’t expect a new map until the end of season 2. I think that we will have a lot of stuff on already existing maps in the beginning. Invasions on Brisban and stuff like that. Speculation of course.

Bazaar of the four winds for many reasons but 1 in particular is the feel of leaving the cage of the normal map.
Yes the world map we have now makes me feel caged and being able to leave outside its walls was so refreshing.

I am a huge fan of Kudu, so I would prefer an asura BUT! I think Anet chose a sylvari because there are bonds between Pale Tree/Dream/Sylvari/Forest Dragon that we havn’t seen yet.

Yes! In fact I was going to put it in the original post but didn’t want to make it too long. I would like a Forgal without drama (living family) but in the main group of the game.

Their is nothing wrong with Forgal or wanting a character like him, but if you had a character similar to him he would still have to bring something new to the table. Something that Forgal did not have and a role that Braham does not currently fill.

This is why we need good variety of all characters in personality/class/sex, the Living story core heroes does not quite yet have that diversity where it can satisfy the majority of people.

Yes indeed, we are discussing about an mmorpg, this type of games try to reach a wide type of customers. But Forgal was not part of the LS, not even a secondary character like Magnus, imagine if you were to lvl up only 1 toon and it was in the Priory. Then bam! Forgal does not exist for you.

I hope they do develop the traditional strong male character. I also hope they don’t push out any of the strong females. We don’t have to like each others styles but we should respect it on both ends. I like diversity but I also like inclusion.

They don’t need to push out any female character, in fact I think that the LS would be a lot better if instead 1 looooong and slooooow story like season 1 they make 3 shorter stories inside a year. You can rotate characters inside those 3 stories, the traditional strong male could lead 1 of those stories and rest on the other 2.
Truth be told, I also think they need to put interesting females as well. I don’t see “strong females” either, my favorite female character of all times/media is the classic Amanda Waller (not todays sexy doll) and I havn’t seen anyone like her. You see, right there is another style of hero I would like to see: female, tactical genius, charismatic, strong leadership, overweight (like my mum and many other women out there I love), does not dress sexy to be seen as a sex icon, serious, heterosexual married with children, no drama, no jokes. The interesting point of her would be how a tactical genius she is and her strength of will for tough decisions. Pair her with my “Forgal” style hero and add frictions like different style of tactics. I would love something like that.

What you find interesting I do not, the hero you want I do not. I want a warrior that wrestles bears with his hands, is a tactical genius, charismatic leader, emotionally strong (not daddy issues or anything lie that), mature, heterosexual, married, father of 7 kids (could be more), with huge arms, a huge beard with a mustache. Basically I want a mentor I can respect. You see, people is different and wants different things. Calling me misogynist, sexist, racist, communist, satan worshiper, heteromonster, beard supremacist, evil macho or any other card up your sleeve won’t change that fact You don’t like my style of hero and I don’t like yours, simple story.

Sound like you want Forgal version two.

I just hope, for future male characters, we get interesting people. Traditionally “effeminate” sorts would be lovely to see, rocking flashy outfits and bringing a sense of uniqueness to the game (or more gay male characters, or bi ones, or something). I swear, though… if I see one more stubbled, middle-aged, gruff speaking warrior who wrestles bears with his hands and is a tactical genius… I’ll just eat a shirt or something.

Explaining the same thing 5 times in 2 pages aint condescending

You have much more patience than I do! I agree with your points but at a certain point don’t you get a headache from banging your head against the wall (i.e. trying to reason with those who are unwilling to listen)?

Also, we must remember that men have the “onerous burden” of being over-represented in politics, business, movies, video games, etc. Hilarious actually that some men are complaining about being marginalized in one small part of one video game – oh, the heavy burden of privilege and always being the focus of attention.

I believe the post is about iconics and biconics. Together they are 10 characters of which 7 are female. This group is not “one small part of one videogame”, it is the main group of heroes on a videogame we care (at least to read the forums). That group is the core of the story, the poster boys. In that core I see few male heroes, only 1 that actually is still active and I don’t like it (I didn’t like any of the other 2 much either to be honest). Me, OP and others are not happy about it, that is what this thread is about, not about what men should or should not accept or what happens in another videogames.

Question about KasJory Romance [Spoiler-ish]

JGBarbarian.3579

As a teacher of history (almost) that is studying the last subject, “history of art” I can give you my opinion about your post Imperios.
First: when you analyze an art piece take into account “3 different times”. The first time is the era depicted/inspired by in the piece. The second time is when it was created, the third is the one you live in. The third is important because you will always analyze the piece with the glasses of your era, and you would do so differently had you lived in another time. The first “time” is much less important than the second, the truly important one. In other words it matters more, way more when a piece was created that what time it depicts. Example: compare the art pieces of the birth of Jesus in different centuries and you will see differences in all of them because they were inspired by problematics and social insterests of different eras, (the “eras” when they were created).
If you understood the first part then let’s go on to your topic: why lesbianism seems so normal in Tyria? The answer is in the “time” (and place) it was created, on the problematic of the era when the art piece was produced and not in the time it is trying (which I don’t think they are actually trying ) to depict.
Even if the game were trying to represent Renaissance or the Industrial Era, it would be a product of the XXI century, you should understand that XXI century to start on the analysis on the characteristics of the game.

JGBarbarian.3579

When you go the the Dead End Bar I see all those characters as lead characters. 4 females discussing the latest event and one dimwitted male grunting in the corner who they laugh at.

Why can’t they just add in another Male character to the group who actually has some insight to contribute and isn’t just a grunting fool that needs everything explained to him. Keep all the other females, just add one more guy… too much to ask? a privilege? pft.

This is exactly what I saw on the Dead End, after it me and my wallet feel both offended.

I personally don’t care about ratios. I want just one strong male lead. Intelligent, cynical, physically strong, composed, occasionally drunk and NOT flirting with anyone. One who takes victory with a shrug and defeat with laughter. I want a hero that doesn’t wait for a villain to make their dramatic speech, but shoots the kitten mid sentence. His dialogs shouldn’t be about his mommy issues, but rather about telling people to shut the hell up and pass the ammunition.
I guess I just want something between a Krogan and Bruce Willis.

This hero would make me and my wallet feel less offended.

The lack of nations during the Living Story.

in Living World

Posted by: JGBarbarian.3579

JGBarbarian.3579

I don’t really see any of the races, except the Charr, as having any actual nations.

The human nations all got destroyed, and only a few towns forts, and cities survive, and their borders are ill defined, and overlap with other races. The Norn and Asura are displaced from their homelands and mostly concentrated in their home cities. The Sylvari are spreading, but they don’t seem to have established national boundaries.

Kryta still exists, with it’s monarchy and council. But I agree that the borders are ill defined, that however does not stop the existence of certain people/groups/institutions that can be seen as more or less “racial government bodies”. For example the Pale Tree and the firstborns of each cycle are somewhat leaders. The council of Rata Sum leads it’s secret police and so on. I believe OP wants those bodies to be more active in the story, I wouls like it as well.

This is ultimately the comment that made me log in to respond to you, fighting for one cause because it affects you and not other causes because they don’t affect you does not make you a hypocrite or in any way wrong for doing so, I would argue hypocrisy would be if you fought for one cause and vehemently opposed similar causes, something I would argue you are doing in this thread by making it seem as though these men are somehow doing something wrong in not liking the skewed representation when you personally do not seem to like it when it occurs the other way around.

Just because you don’t fight actively for other causes regarding equality does not make your comments less valid or invalid and, all of these forms of inequality you listed clearly should not occur and it is a shame they do.

However, for example, just because a male over female inequality occurs and has occured for some time, does not make it right for the complete opposite to happen, that would still not be equality.

Agreed

JGBarbarian.3579

I did like them at first, but if I see characters inserted into some type of media propaganda then I reject them immediately. I don’t know if that was the writer/game intention cause I can’t read minds; but I see Braham, Kasmeer and Marjory being representatives of a particular way of thinking that is not universal/eternal but is presented as such.

What does Braham represent to you, out of curiosity? I’m struggling to think of anything potentially controversial about his characterisation.

I don’t think Kas/Jory is propaganda, either, for what it’s worth, I think they just are what they are. Certainly, where I live, and among my fairly ordinary circles, their relationship would not really raise any eyebrows.

I will try to be more clear. The way of thinking of your “ordinary circles” is just one among many, that is a reality and no matter how hard you try you can’t force the whole world to think the way you do.
My criticism to the characters is this: they represent 1 way of thinking disregarding many other.
Possible problems: the game will sell well only where that particular way of thinking exists or it will alienate a part of its costumers.
Sorry I can’t be more clear, english is my forth language.

Oh believe me, I am very, very aware that homosexuality is not accepted in all places. My parents would find Kas/Jory disgusting and immoral. My point was that so many people are fixating on the Kas/Jory relationship as being ‘controversial’ and ‘propaganda’, when in other places and cultures, it simply isn’t: there is nothing shocking or political about their relationship.

Also, I notice you did not respond to my question about Braham. What do you find problematic about him? Braham is straight, as far as I am aware.

I see Kas and Jory as propaganda/comercial story because various reasons (as I said on the fist post it is just a feeling, I don’t claim to know what is on the devs mind):
1 – It is not the first gay relationship, it is like the third or more. I have seen more gay romances than straight romances in the game. If I am not mistaken gay people is 10% of the population, but in this game they are overepresented in regarding to that number. There is even a whole species of neuter beigns where heterosexual relations have no difference from homosexual relations.
2 – It is the most important romance in the game. Imagine if they are a girl’s idols, what does she see? Lesbian idols.
3 – Pay attention when the game is published, where, and most importantly check out media and political trends. Then compare to the game.

Final notes: When I found about sylvaris and the gay relation of Caithe/Faolain or the two in the personal story I thought it was cool to be inclusive and give gay people a place in Tyria. I don’t hate gays, I hate propaganda, I hate when the media tries to subtle impose a way of thinking into the people, I hate it even more when that way of thinking is indeed controversial on the world, and I hate it even more when it is a card used by political parties. Can’t talk about Braham, you will have to realize for yourself.

Rate the LS as a whole

in Living World

Posted by: JGBarbarian.3579

JGBarbarian.3579

I liked the structure of the LS: the 2 week cadence and the different types of LS (zerg, solo challenge, dungeon, big map bosses, etc).
I disliked:
Weapon sets on the BL chests (yeah I know I can buy them on the tp too).
The story – Too long for how simple it was, some things continue unresolved even after a year. I agree that in a year there should be 2 seasons. Also the story almost didn’t touch any of the world misteries, like the floating castle or the tengu for example.
How much content can we have from 1 LS patch – I mean can we have an entirely new map (normal size) in a LS patch? Can we have a new race? It does not seems so.

6.5 but I expect a much better season 2 with giant reptiles

More NPC's having heterosexual relationships.

in Living World

Posted by: JGBarbarian.3579

JGBarbarian.3579

I agree with the posts saying that the game lack interesting male characters. The ones I liked on the top of my head (and the reasons why) are:

Forgal – A true warmaster, knows when to kick the door and when to strategize. Suffered the worst tragedy a man can suffer and yet continued to fight with an iron will. Norn among norns.
Azalus Poisontongue – epitomy of funny (sadly just an event npc)
Khudu – No morals, no jokes, no smiles, no crying, no bullkitten. Just one asura genius trying to create the best weapon ever.

To me they are so much better than the main male characters we have:

Logan – Idolatrizes a woman like if she were some kind of goddess creator of the universe or something like that (and to this day he didnt get much in return it would seem xd)
Rytlock – Such a massive anger (love?) because his friend left him for his girlfriend. Buddy this happens everyday; he is your friend, she is his girlfriend, you lose.
Tybalt – Nyaa nyaa I have a big trauma with explosions.
Braham – Nyaa nyaa I hate my mum because she never loved me, nyaa nyaa Rox does not love me either buaaaa.
Canach – My past is wrong buaaaa.
Male leaders (Smodur, Flax, Knut): They never do a thing.

My opinion, not necesarily the same for other people. Sorry for the off-topic, I do want more heterosexual relationships

JGBarbarian.3579

Why is it every patch has to require a zerg to play?

I’m not a fan of zerging either. But it’s not “every patch”. It’s actually the minority of patches.

In the last year, patches gave us, yes, several “zerg updates”, but also dungeons, fractals, solo instances, party instances, PvP and WvW maps, scavenger hunts and much more.

If you look at the individual releases, the ones that introduced new zergable content are actually in the minority. While I personally didn’t like all of them, and some player types got more new content out of them than other player types, I find it extremely fair of ANet to release bits for everybody – including zerg content.

This. Absolutely this. It would be nice if a less lazy person than me were to check all the LS so far, the result would be a pool of different types of updates where zergy content was just one kind.

Possible strategy for Marionette

in The Origins of Madness

Posted by: JGBarbarian.3579

JGBarbarian.3579

There will be a time when most players will know all the boss fights (or phases) and this won’t be required, but until then I thought of this strategy.
It requires 2 coordinated guilds or groups; G1 needs to know fights 2 and 4, G2 needs to know fights 4 and 5.

Lane 1: new players with a commander to explain the easy fight 1.
Lane 2: G1
Lane 3: G2
Lane 4: new players (just defend correctly)
Lane 5: new players ^

The fight goes like this:
Fight 1: Lane 1 succeeds (since it is an easy fight)
Fight 2: G1 succeeds (since they know what to do)
Fight 3: G2 ^
Fight 4: lanes 4, 5 and 1 fails (probably), then G1 succeeds on lane 2
Fight 5: G2 succeeds on lane 3

The idea is to have 2 groups of players that knows the fights and how to use them for maximum gain. Putting one of those on lane1 would be a waste since the first fight is so easy. The strategy is a bit close on time but for what I have seen is doable.
I am enjoying this fight a lot and wanted to share this thought. Sorry for typos, not my mother language

Yeah, I can see something like that happening but with these differences:

Kasmeer dies on the end of LS 1 (There are 2 humans and Jory is more important I think)
Scarlet won’t be the sylvari member because she is female like Caithe, and the members of “Destiny’s Edge 2” have been of different gender than their race representative of DE1 (that is why I expect the asura coming next patch is male). Canach? :O
Group race/profession combo would be like this (DE1 and DE2):
Male charr warrior – Female charr ranger
Female norn ranger – Male norn guardian
Male human guardian – Female human necro
Female sylvari thief – (If Canach) Male sylvari warrior
Female asura elementalist – ? (Male asura engineer?)

Playing as a charr your options for armor will be extremely limited, even of weapons (floating staff). Anet fixed some clipping issues but the human style armor looks horrible anyway with or without clipping.
Another thing to be aware of is that guardians also use fire a lot, especially with a torch (although the fire is blue) so you can make him into somewhat a flame legion heavy (fire themed gear is abundant)

Halloween Outfits - Costume Brawl only??

started playing just after halloween last year

Anyone else disappointed you can’t wear (at least the executioner’s) as armor?
ANET, I would buy this if it was wearable in open world, but definitely will not as a costume.

I wouldn’t say it’s not worth buying just cause you can’t wear it in combat, they’re still cool outfits. Even though, it would be awesome to be able to use them over your armor.

They are cool outfits, but Anet says that creating armor is harder and takes more time than creating weapons. If so, then I would prefer that they used their time on creating combat armor instead of town clothes. I really like the executioner armor, but I won’t buy it because I don’t feel like supporting town clothes.

I disliked them at first, but when previewing them on one of my toons I had this feeling of them beign orrian oriented. Thus I tried some dark and decay colors and this is the result:

A Response To Charr Armor

Indeed, Anet cant say that charr are 13% because only 13% of the players like, or prefer charrs. I have 7 lvl 80s, of them only 1 is a charr, 2 are humans and 2 are norn. Even my engineer is human but the reason is not because I prefer human. The charr are my favorite race and I would like to have many of them BUT if I do my armor options is too limited: If my engineer were charr I would be stuck in the cultural T1 forever. By making it human I can have multiple armors that looks good on him.
Bottom line: you play a big role in keeping charr population low Anet.

Isolationist policies usually result in the opposite, where the isolated nation is left behind by the rest of the world.

False, actually. The U.S. had an isolationist policy up until World War II when we were forced out of seclusion due to the attack on Pearl Harbor, and was the fastest progressing nation in the world both industrially and artistically. Cantha could be the same way, opened up by the rise of Bubbles who guards the Unending Ocean.

Bad example, the Canthan isolation is more along the lines of the Edo period in Japan.

Issues with character art, weapons, or armor?

Bug: Clipping of stowed greatswords on charr cultural T1 (hvy)

The images show the problem, when greatsword is stowed it dissapears inside the armor. The problem is not specific to a singular greatsword and that’s why I provide image of 2 different greatsword skins. The problem does not exist with certain other types of armor such as the Vigil skin heavy (screenshot provided) so I believe the problem is with the charr cultural T1 hvy. The naked screenshot is to provide the build for my character body, in case it could be relevant.

I am really happy that you guys are taking the time for this. Keep the great work.

I agree with the post and want to support this protest. I understand if a lot of armor that were made for humans (since we all know is going to be the most played race) don’t go that well for a charr. But, T3 light with tail clipping? COF armor made for humans? No, I don’t think that is acceptable. Considering this game gives importance to appeaerance rather than stats (something I like a lot) isn’t it negative to have a part of the playerbase with so little choices on armor? On my charr necro I only find acceptable the T1 and 2 cultural, Tactical armor and some parts (not all) of the Shadow armor. The rest has clipping issues (T3) or look bad on a charr. I refuse to believe you don’t have artists capable of expanding that Anet, since this is a game about visuals then I want you to give the charr (your most unique race of the game) the proper work we, charr fans deserve.

Post here if you had enough of tail clipping.

My favorite race in the game is the charr but of my 7 characters only 1 is charr. The reason is the clipping and the human armor looking bad on them. I feel like forced to play something else to look acceptable.

Indeed the most pleasant surprise for me as well, more than the jade wpn ticket I got or the nice looking wings.
I absolutely love this type of cutscene like they used in the intro and the Order welcome.
I want more of them and to be able to watch them anytime (even the intros xd)
To the people involved in Marjory cutscene: good job guys!

When we are first building our maps we go completely for aesthetics. Then we slowly pull them back to make the map realistically run on min spec machines. This is how most developers work. Sometimes things get ‘scrapped’, sometimes the props are changed pretty radically in the optimization process. Sometimes that means we get to make things looks better because we can pack more stuff where needed. And sometimes it means we can’t. It’s all part of the joys and frustrations of working in an evolving medium.

I have a low end video card and you made me feel guilty for the game missing such beautiful places Ç_Ç
