Plenty of us who play thieves can attest to the fact that the ability to continuously attack while stealthed is a broken mechanic. I hope anet realizes this too so that my class can be a little more challenging to play.
Desperate for a challenge, eh? Two suggestions:
1. Play a different class, or
2. Play without stealth (gasp!).
Oh, and finally I, as a thief, would love to know how you have “the ability to continuously attack while stealthed”? I feel so foolish since for over a year now my backstab/tactical strike always breaks stealth. How do you do this? Please share this secret!
forgive me if i’m not a complete video geek like you.
btw, it’s not just me who’s asking for it. there are more people who wanted to get that broken class fixed.
The point he is trying to make is that you are calling for nerfs to a class that you don’t play, all while not even understanding or taking the time to learn even the simplest of in-game mechanics such as binding keys to increase your in-game reaction time and overall PvP performance.
No need for name calling.
Could you please tell me how you remove conditions? With P/D and shortbow?
And do not say Pain Response, please. I wait some serious arguments from you.
Perhaps he could give us a link to a video of his play. That would help settle this little debate.
So, Jitters, up to that challenge? Let us watch you and let us decide for ourselves.
Here are the changes I made to compare:
Hey man your 2 cents is what I’m looking for. I laughed at “no stealth. admirable, but pointless” Theres always room for a good SR. Anyway by mixing gear you think i should throw in some Valkyrie? The goal wasnt to make my crit chance super high, but i needed executioner there. Essentially the problems you listed would mean to make this build perfect. You want me to go 15 into trickery, and at least 10 into shadow arts to give me more toughness, that or soldiers gear. and all of those things would reduce damage, which understood is already pretty high. I’m hoping that with these changes i could retain enough damage for the survivability to be worth it… which brings in the whoe active defense over passive defense argument.
Hoping my response doesn’t look like I’m dismissing your suggestions! They were well made and appreciated sir
Hmm, I don’t have exact suggestions, only some things I’ve noticed that work well for me. So, here we go:
1. Cavalier gear is pretty nice when you want to lower critical chance and increase defense without nerfing damage too heavily. I like it, but only on a few pieces of armor. Personally, I use Cavalier chest, boots and one trinket to add in some toughness. I usually go for around 2300 armor and this will get you there.
2. I don’t go into the toughness tree because, quite frankly, last refuge is quite possibly the worst trait in the entire game. Believe it or not, that one trait keeps me from all the others in that tree.
3. I like Valkyrie weapons myself. They give a great boost to health and power. Again, you’ll lose precision here but that’s okay, since you need to lower it some anyway.
4. I run with around 40% critical chance, which is, according to the golden ratio table, still a tad high for my critical damage. Remember, if traited appropriately, you can achieve 70% critical chance for unload so long as you’re above 90% health with fury. That’s plenty for two unloads.
5. If you have the money, I would get Traveler’s runes. Their condition duration goes nicely with the power line as well as body shot’s immobilize. They have decent damage, as well as the ever important run speed constant.
6. P/P main set and P/P offset just don’t have the escape mechanisms that other weapons bring. If you want to keep both, you may want to consider Shadow Trap for those times you need to get out of dodge quickly. With planning, combining Shadow Trap and Traveler’s runes will get you quickly away from the battle to somewhere safe when overrun. Perhaps exchange Agility Signet for Shadow Trap. That should be enough to save your kitten when the kitten hits the fan.
7. Finally, I would go 15 into Trickery for fury on steal (see above), initiative on steal (see above) and +3 initiative (see above).
8. Every thing else pure zerker.
That’s how I would change it up a bit.
My personal opinion:
Weaknesses:
1. No stealth. Admirable, but pointless.
2. Lack of initiative. 12 initiative for a P/P, even with RfI, is not enough in my opinion.
3. No toughness. Nasty thieves will C&D/Steal + BS, killing you in one second.
4. No escapes except SS, which is easily overcome by most HS thieves, blinking mesmers, leaping guardians, leaping rangers, porting elementilists, etc., etc.
Finally, a lot of folks may disagree with me here, but your precision to power ratio is really, really off. You don’t need that much precision. You’ll get more damage for initiative spent if you weaken your critical chance significantly and increase your power dramatically. You can do this with power food, buffs from guards, and different runes, mixing that with a tad different armor.
My two cents.
(edited by JakobGW.5730)
I run 25/30/0/0/15 on my S/D setup. I used x/30/x/x/30 several months ago and I still think it’s pretty viable. I don’t like spec’ing it now since most thieves are running 30 trickery nowadays.
My condi removal is a constant upkeep of Infiltrator Return and the occasional quick Shadow Step if I need a large amount of removal. I used to run Lyssa, but I’ve moved past that to Traveler’s for the constant speed. The beauty of IS/IR is that you can find a safe spot, even sheathed, click the ground and dump initiative into spamming IS/IR to clear dangerous conditions. I find I have to do that every so often, but not generally.
Man this was really good and I really like the fact you playing something different keep up the good work.
Agreed.
P/D power build. I’ve tried it, and I love it. It doesn’t sound like it works, but it does. The only problem is the lack of escape-ability that I’m still trying to tweak. Trust me, folks get a little surprised when they see a P/D thief approach and suddenly strike for 9k using Shadow Strike.
“Isn’t that a condition weapon set?” I often hear.
I apologize for criticizing, and I enjoy making and watching videos as much as the next guy, but it would be nice if you would record a video that is not the same ol’ setup that almost every single D/D thief runs since the beginning of the game. The typical x/30/30/x/x with Shadow’s Rejuvenation and Hidden Killer, spamming Cloak & Dagger and BS is nothing we haven’t seen before and is simply just not interesting anymore.
I’m sure you’re a good player, but I stopped watching halfway through when I realized that I’ve seen your video hundreds of times before today.
So these are my feelings, if anyone is in the same boat as me feel free to speak up, cut I’m getting sick of the trash. When i first started playing at launch, I wanted my thief to do crazy damage. Stumbled across berserker and thought, “This is a great way to do a bunch of damage”… then after months of getting flack and cry babies kittening(and yes i simply spelled out kittening) I decided to swap to conditions so people couldnt cry when i beat them. NOW, every time i beat some one i get called a meta loser, or perplex thief, i don’t even use perplex!!! At this point i feel like if i play condis people spit perplex at me, and if i play damage, people spit stealth or OP at me….. any one have a good non crit, non-condi build i can play!?
I’ve been gone a while and recently came back to play a bit. Do you play with other folks often? If so, seriously give venom share a shot, it’s a ton of fun when played correctly. You won’t roflcrit someone while being “perma stealthed.” You’re simply giving your teammates the ammunition to completely wreck someone while the other team hardly knows it’s because of you that they just got destroyed while unable to even move.
In other words, you’re essentially “stealthed” while in plain sight.
SoS is taking WvW to the next level! Running, supply trap, tower hugging, ballista vs. player, moa morph, and 2v1 all in the same engagement. FA is going to have to step up their game!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31tK-utNCm0
As a thief, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed watching that glass flavor of the month d/d d/p thief get wtfpwned after he jumped in for what he thought was an easy kill. All he did was 3.5k cloak & dagger or backstab, couldn’t tell (weak!), three dagger hits, and one headshot before he was dead, dead, dead.
Good work.
Oh, glad you got the Moa’ing Mesmer, too.
I still think CD has the potential to beat and become better than SoS, but that’s just me.
Can’t compete with their oceanic/sea. Even today, they were ticking at +510 during early morning NA time.
Toe to toe, we can compete with SoS very well. It’s the coverage that kills us.
That is, of course, if you care about winning/losing in the first place.
Come on FA! Stop running back to your towers when you outnumber us 4 to 1.
Maybe it’s just because we’re fighting T1 and T2 servers more and more, but I’m seeing two pretty big trends these days when it comes to smaller groups and/or havoc groups. First, T1 and T2 servers seem to now classify havoc/small man as 10+. Seven or so may be guildies running together but there is always a few pugs leeching as well. T3 and below typically consider a single group to be small man/havoc. We consider 10 to be a mini zerg, especially since you can place two superior rams on a door and 10 folks is plenty to take an objective without being all ninja-like.
Second, most single groups nowadays consist of primarily the same make-up everytime: 2 guardians and/or 2 warriors with the remaining being Necros/Elementalists. Your picture is a perfect example of this. A Mesmer may be thrown in the mix on occasion but only for veil or mass invisibility.
I guess folks really can’t complain these days when we only see thieves and BM rangers roaming solo since they don’t really have a place in the meta mix. Most Engineers will get left out since Necos/Elementalists do a better job with AoE’s, and Guardians/Warriors can stay alive much longer. And let’s face it, the Engineer is a hard class to play, with the others being much easier to accomplish the same things that an Engineer can.
It kind of sucks for players who aren’t interested in the meta classes as they will get tired of always fighting the same thing. It would be nice if things got changed up a bit.
Just my opinion.
Sounds good, perhaps we can both roam SoS bl tonight if it looks good. IF you wish to contact me ingame around when your starting to wvw ill see if I can get a team in there to roam the same map. GL out there.
Sounds perfect. I’ll send a whisper.
Good Fights this weekend. Had some fun fighting some larger groups, good fun.
Still looking for some more smaller groups to fight tho, HL normally will be roaming in CD or SoS bl depending on which has less FA owned stuff on it at the time we start with around 4-7 members. GLHF to anyone we meet out there.
Until then, heres some footage from this weekend.Quick note: HL wouldn’t mind some Small scale GvG’s this week, we normally field around 8 tops if anyones willing to do a gvg scaled down to 8v8 or lower depending on who we have on.
Don’t have a lot of experience with GvG’s, but would love to get some practice against other groups out there.
We typically don’t roam our own borderland, but we’ll be looking for you from now on. We typically field 1 – 7 or so ourselves. We’re [FKVA] on Crystal Desert.
I need more DB, at least the few players that I found alone tried to fight back.
Lucky.
You did forget to QQ about nightcapping though, that’s number 1 in the Official Dragonbrand Guidebook! For future reference, #2 is we only zerg, #3 is we’re all numbers, no talent; good job hitting those. 2 out of 3, Meatloaf would be proud.
Well, I just can’t imagine why your server keeps hearing the same criticisms over and over, as you’ve attempted to sarcastically point out in your post.
Maybe if you’re continuously told the same thing, perhaps there’s some truth to it?
But I have to say, DB and SoS, you are some classy folk. Not a single /laugh or /dance or anything like that.
Are we even in the same matchup?
Here’s a quick video of just two hours this morning that I made of your typical Dragonbrand players. This is what I had to deal with all week long when I struck gold and actually found a Dragonbrand player or two not zerging. Emotes like /laughing when they couldn’t walk the talk or had numbers advantage, running to guards or behind doors, doing anything to avoid any actual conflict instead of karma grinding.
Trust me, this is just par for the course for this server. I, for one, hope we don’t have to face them again anytime soon.
They should’ve just carried over the assassin class from GW1 in the first place, much more interesting than this rogue-imitator designed to get all the kiddies from WoW to switch to GW2.
Why you gotta dog on my class, bro? :P
Also,
Why you never roam wid us, bro?
Matchups like this are fun for no one. At least you have people to kill – everywhere – around the clock.
This looks good on paper, but in reality it doesn’t work that way. Sure, you guys have folks everywhere, but usually it’s one or two and then when they’re killed, a huge group of 25+ comes for revenge. Then it’s back to the ol’ cat and mouse game of dragging the overzealous away from the pack to get a few more kills if possible.
The solution to this mess is very simple, and the best part of it is that we don’t need ANet to do it. It does, however, apply more to the bigger servers than the unpopulated ones. The best way is to explain it is by giving a scenario:
DB has a 25 man zerg running a borderland. They steam roll everyone on the map and complain that there is not enough competition. On the same map, CD and SoS are running 2 – 3 havoc groups of around 5 or so, who, not surprisingly, run when a zerg of 25 approaches. So, why not split the zerg up? Why don’t more DB folks run in havoc groups of 5 – 8 or so? By doing so, they run into enemy havoc group of 5 – 8 and a fight ensues instead of the cat and mouse bullkitten. Ta da! Everyone is happy.
At this point in the week, who cares what the ppt/total is? DB wins, enough said. Congratulations. Everyone, not just DB, but SoS and CD, take a few of your friends and run a havoc group. If just five people do this, with 5 of their friends, then there will be fights everywhere and everyone is happy.
Unless, of course, zerging is your thing and the only thing you enjoy. If that’s the case, though, transfer to SoR. They need you.
More DBBL solo roaming for Eviator! It’s true, sometimes DB players do travel alone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QawjIwudEqY
You timed your dodges almost perfectly, man. Good showcase of skill. Keep them coming.
I love the cute “just stand in the black power circle to stop the thief from stealthing” comments. The heartseeker puts him into stealth while hitting you and does NOT apply reveal. Yes, you heard that correct.
I have a thief and so do most of my guildies and every single one of them agree that this blackpowder + heartseeker needs to be taken out.
I’m a guildie and a thief. And I approve this message.
Whatever Jakob, you are entitled to your opinions and delusions and there is no value in continuing this.
Wait! I must have the last word:
You’re delusional, not me. So there!
Now, if there truly is no value in continuing this, then don’t repost.
Yeah, because I don’t see how doing 6v1’s is fun for anyone.
Actually, it is fun for us when our victim is sporting a [Fang] tag, regardless of the numbers.
What’s with CD’s obsession with Fang? Do we need to get a doll out so you can show us where they touched you?
Because we know when we wreck you in-game, you’ll come to the forums and cry about it. Which you’ve done yet again in this match up, just like you did in the last one.
I don’t sweat it anymore, as I said I typically run in a ZERG and haven’t seen you guys for a while.
Fix’d for ya. I can’t say I blame you, though, considering that you’re matched up against CD. There’s safety in numbers.
All you do is zerg and hide in numbers. Whatever makes you happy I guess is what’s important. I won’t pretend to understand it, but since your group is dedicated to it I guess I can try and respect that.
Yeah, because I don’t see how doing 6v1’s is fun for anyone.
Actually, it is fun for us when our victim is sporting a [Fang] tag, regardless of the numbers.
I was just there this morning myself. What’s your guild tag and what toon were you running?
rB on my Asura engineer
I saw you once at the lake tower this morning. I would have engaged, but I was having too much fun trolling two DB d/p perma-stealth thieves ([qT] and [SYNC]) just waiting for me to hop down from the tower to try and gank me. They even ignored other CD roamers who ran by which tells me that they really had a kitten for me. They must have used the Black Powder + Heartseeker combo over 100 times waiting for me to hop down.
Sorry to disappoint, fellas. But it was fun watching you waste your time.
I’ve been solo roaming in CD BL for about 2 hours now, and so far I’ve seen no indication that either CD or SoS has any interest in solo roaming. I beat CD 1v2 (admittedly one was upleveled), only to be interrupted while stomping by 3 SoS. At the south camp the lone SoS built and killed me with a ballista while I was fighting vets. Just now I thought I found a solo SoS “champion”, but no, 10 seconds in his three buddies come around the corner. I don’t want to read another word from you guys that DB doesn’t solo roam…
I was just there this morning myself. What’s your guild tag and what toon were you running?
Massive respect to qT, some of the best fights I’ve had in this game.
Special shoutout to that Shortbow Thief. That guy’s a boss.
can we have a video of the GvG please?
Once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all, man. Guardians/Warriors leading the pack, Necros/Eles right behind, all AoE’ing and cleaving, while granting stability. It’s even discouraged to target someone as you may trigger an ability that sends you in an opposite direction from the group, which is a very bad thing. No need to be careful on dodges or watch your enemy movements to counter them, just spam those AoE’s/cleaves until you see little red triangles.
On another note, as I mentioned earlier I’m trying a really wacky build that I’m not used to. It would be nice if the DB solo roamers didn’t run all the time. I’m very easy pickens right now. Seriously, guys, please stay and fight, especially if the odds are even. TC wasn’t even as bad as DB, and that’s really saying something. What’s with you guys?
Good job you killed 3 people from probably the biggest PvE guilds on our server while playing probably the most face roll easy class in the game.
In the context of a solo roamer, did you seriously type a post claiming that necromancers are the most face roll easy class in the game?
SERIOUSLY?
Good job, Waffler. Excellent fight.
Just needed to put this here. I would be embarrassed if this squishy got away from me on my thief.
I can tell you that that wasn’t me, but I’ll be trying some weird and wacky builds this week to try and find something different so it’s possible that others will do the same and have some off-the-wall numbers. I have a feeling that most of the experimental builds will suck, but this is a perfect time to do some testing as we’ll be outnumbered most of the week in all the borderlands.
I’ve BEATEN my own profession WITHOUT STEALTH, I have beaten other professions WITHOUT STEALTH and the professions I have yet to beat I LEARN ABOUT BY ROLLING THEM (i.e. mesmers and engis).
Have you ever posted a video of your gameplay? If so, I’d like to see it.
anyway, recruitment is our problem, and there is no reason anyone else should have to worry about it.
My apologies, but posts like these:
Well, time to log on and see how much PvDooring was done by CD again while I slept. It would be really cool if primetimes were all around the same times.
With the nightcapping, there also exists the problem that no matter how much effort you put into defending your BL late night, it will all be undone by the time you wake up because a swarm of noobs comes and knocks it all down unopposed.
do not mention anything about recruitment, and even attempting to interpret your server’s recruitment issues from these posts is quite the stretch.
But you’re right, recruiting is your problem and no one else’s.
With the nightcapping, there also exists the problem that no matter how much effort you put into defending your BL late night, it will all be undone by the time you wake up because a swarm of noobs comes and knocks it all down unopposed.
The point I am trying to make is that it shouldn’t matter to you that a swarm of noobs took points in your BL after you logged off. In my opinion, what should matter to you is whether or not you had fun defending it when you were online. Did you fend off a swarm of 20 with your 10? Did you ninja a tower with only three people while your commander was taking a keep? Did you run into a small 5v5 around ruins and later chat with your opponents to give them props for a good fight? If zerging is your thing, did you enjoy the karma train while pwning newbs across the battlefield?
Ignore the score. Ignore which server took points when you were offline. Pick an objective and try to accomplish that objective competitively. Attempt clever siege placements. Even troll your enemies.
If you truly cared about the score, you’d be on one of the T1 stacked servers, but you’re not. So ignore the score and enjoy the fights. Trust me, you won’t find a higher server morale than when most of the folks who fight along side you have this kind of attitude.
Well, time to log on and see how much PvDooring was done by CD again while I slept. It would be really cool if primetimes were all around the same times.
Who gives a kitten about what happens when you sleep? Just make sure you have good fights when you’re awake. Isn’t that all that matters?
Yet again, and for the 1,498,938,294,971th time, who gives a kitten about who wins in WvW? What does it even matter? Just fight for the fight and try to be competitive in the objectives you set for yourself, and your allies, during the times you’re online.
If you’re so worried about 1st place, go play Mario Kart against five-year-olds.
By the way I heard some FTKV got mad after losing a 1v1 shortly after your babysitters left. Jakob please comment, was it you?
I have no idea who “FTKV” is, but guessing on your previous posts regarding numbers, I certainly believe you’re just making kitten up now.
I think he’s in that one called DREP or something? I don’t know.
No, no, he’s in [PYRO].
We had 25 against what we were told by CD was 50
Kindergarten counting lessons →
I don’t see what’s wrong with admitting that we have a ton more people than both of you when all of our fairweathers come out to play.
I’ll admit that.
Holy kitten. I agree with Saiyr on something! The world truly is ending. Mark my words.
Shout out to the [NOVA] Necro and Warrior for the duels near Briar on Mag BL this morning. Always appreciate the fights.
Hey guys! FKVA has been having a really great time with the new match up. I just put together a clip of our first day but I wasn’t sure which soundtrack best fits, so lets take a poll!!!
Here is video one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUG_L2NgY6cAnd Video two:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ASihfeh474See you all on the field!
Video two is excellent! His skills really are pretty sub-par 1v1. I don’t know why he talks so much kitten.
Obviously his self-worth is tied so heavily to this video game. His tears and rage posts taste so good, nonetheless.
I’m a little confused since you’re claiming this is the best build for WvW, yet in a different thread you said:
thief condition builds are like 3rd worst in game. we really only have bleed and semi available poison now.
So which is it?
Second, I disagree with essentially every single point you’ve tried to make in this thread. But the following is what I wanted to respond:
really show me one video that can get into the fray of a LARGE scale fight and do stuff. not just run on the edges and pick off the lambs…..or with shorbow….ping ping ping.
Your problem is that you think a thief picking off low-health, retreating enemies looking to heal up and reset cool downs is worthless. I pick off enemies retreating to the back of the enemy line as S/D, something you can’t do as P/D. I’m ganking people well out of your pistol range before you even know they’ve been downed. Those enemies now can’t return to the fight because of me, while you’re invis spreading bleeds that can easily be cleansed in larger scale fights by other teammates or by condition cleansing.
Just because you’re “into the fray” invis’ing and staying alive doesn’t mean you’re doing jack kitten. There is nothing wrong with targeting – and ultimately killing – hurt enemies that are out of range from your teammates. The ultimate goal is to kill after all, isn’t it?
I’m thinkin maybe going to BP to fight the CD guilds and heard a couple on EBay?
I’m on CD and I’d be happy to fight you guys; we have a bunch of roaming groups nowadays. The only issue is whether or not we’ll be paired with BP and/or EBay on a regular basis or if this week’s matchup was just a fluke or not.
Only time will tell, I suppose.
Other than the 1 small man we know about on CD, any other small mans actively run 5 people on any of these servers or is it all just “meta ppt” land? Truthfully?
I’ve read some of your past posts. What you’re looking for doesn’t seem to exist in my opinion. If you want small man, and nothing but, you won’t find it here or anywhere else for that matter.
If your small group wants to pick apart semi-zergs, then this may be the place for you. I would strongly recommend that you stay away from T1 and T2, nothing but zergs there. Roaming groups in those tiers are typically 15+.
I’ve been involved in more open field fights with lesser numbers in this matchup than any other matchup since RNG was implemented. You’ll find a lot of smaller group fights here, but you’ll also be running from the zombie zerg as well.
PvD commanders and players get no respect from me. The fact our guys are happy to beat on an empty map and back cap wood towers from CD is pathetic lol. PPl will never learn how to fight if all they do is run to the empty bls.
I agree. So we should implement a simple rule. Everytime your forces are going to attack a keep or tower, you must let the enemy know about it. Before the attack can commence, the enemy zerg must be there in full force. That way, there will be no PvD and everyone involved learns how to fight better.
You must be a player who loves the karma trains/wxp so your defending it calling it strategy. Its not a good strat to beat on a the 2nd place server when your third. I guess I will break it down for ya wxp farmers. Its simple. CD beats on ebay and holds a +300 ppts. CD leaves ebay and BP walks in and back caps ebay’s stuff. BP hits +295 while CD continues to sit at +300 because no pressure is in your home bls or in EB. Third place server(currently BP) may over take 2nd place server(currently ebay) and if tht happens. Ebay will make sure to hit our bls everynight during primetime, causing BP to have to hold off ebay while CD sits in the back laughing holding the most ppts and holding first. Do u think im dumb? You say you and the rest of CD are trying to help us? Yea I guess u tricked idiots to think that. Your just trying to get ebay and BP to clash more so CD can sit back and enjoy first place. Truth is, CD doesn’t even have a comfortable lead. Its only Tuesday. If Ebay and bp really wanted to, we could take tht lead from you, but you have our guys believing your really trying to help us when in reality, Ebay and BP are duking it out for 2nd place while CD is pulling the strings of both servers. So I guess its well played on your part for being able to do tht lol.
Thems a lotta words, we ain’t nuthin but humble country folk.
Here I always thought “nuthin” was spelled “nuttin.”
Thx 4 da grammer lesin.
Your just trying to get ebay and BP to clash more so CD can sit back and enjoy first place.
How many folks from CD do you think actually give a kitten about 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place? How many from CD do you think actually give a kitten about PPT?
I can’t speak for the entire server nor would I even pretend I could, but every person I fight with on CD doesn’t care what tier we’re in, who our enemies are, or what place we’re in. We care about fights, whether it be over some building (a tower or keep) or in the open field. We care about improving our game and doing the very best we can even when we’re outnumbered, which tends to happen a bunch lately with our luck in match-ups.
We do not “sit back” and enjoy first place. I can almost guarantee you that if BP and Ebay want to double team CD, no one on CD would give a kitten. It would only make us better.
So go for it, if 1st place is so important to you.
Superior Runes of Lyssa do not give stability to the character when a heal is used. I have tested this extensively using a heal with a very short cool down (thief withdraw). I have been able to get every other boon but stability.
