Nothing quite so elaborate is needed. All that needs to be done is for enemies to

A. Hit more frequently and have higher total dps, so you can’t use active defenses to avoid most of all damage (though still require active defenses to avoid a large part of it depending on profession)

B. Put party wide relatively unavoidable pressure damage, so some amount of party support and healing is necesary.

C. Not rally downed players on death. Rally on kill in pve has always been bad design and should be a pvp thing, it lets players go all out knowing they’ll rally anyway if they burst something down.

Edit: Also more enemies need cleave attacks so corner stacking dies horribly.

Stronghold Changes for 6-2 Beta

in PvP

Posted by: Jelle.2807

Jelle.2807

Also – during the last beta event – once people had gotten used to the format (later into the evening) – many matches simply became a PVE race down respective lanes. Basically the winner was determined by who could get to and kill the enemy lord first rather than any sustained actual player vs player activity (small potential for some as people were getting mist essence). The generally accepted “strategy” was for all players to stay clumped in their lanes and rush the enemy NPCs to clear for the doorbreakers. If either team deviated from that strategy, it usually didn’t end well.

Has anything been done to discourage or change that approach since the last beta? I also worry that removing a set of guards will make this an even more accepted strategy.

Nope none at all.

Honestly I’m not even going to bother logging in to test this. Devs can have fun tanking what’s left of the pvp in their game.

Which parts of the lore annoy or depress you?

In defense of the humans:

Firstly afaik there aren’t many details about what sparked the first charr human conflicts. The original ascalonian settlers may well have been peaceful, while what we do know is that the charr have a history of being territorial and agressive. And even then if you look at the wall the ascalonians only took a small portion of the land, only a fraction of what lay north of the wall and east of the blazeridge. It’s only after the charr continued throwing themselves at the humans and lost their khan that they started losing land, in part due to violent infighting.

Secondly, claiming land because at some point in time some far ancestor called it home isn’t particularly good ethics. Hell, the forgotten have a greater claim on ascalon than the charr in that case. In the end land belongs to those who are born of it, which then were ascalonians and now are modern day charr. The ‘this is charr land’ justification is no more than an excuse for the glorification of their warmongering history.

The charr didn’t attack ascalon out of malace, they attacked it to take back land taken from them, and to avenge an entire GENERATION of their people massacred by humans.

You realize the charr invasion was nearly a millenium after they were driven out? By all accounts it was ancient history by then, especially when you consider the searing was no more than three centuries ago current time.

Reading forums is like watching the news. Each channel (or person) will slant the details to match their own point of view. It is up to the viewer (or reader) to try and look past the personal bias and determine what is true

When they are not complaining that every other class is over-powered, they are complaining about content. When they are done griping about content they feel the need to flame other people’s posts. When they are done trying to make themselves look good (by putting down others), they complain about something else. It is as if they sustain themselves by doing nothing but moan and groan.

-Edit- One thing that will never change is this :Every balance proposal you’ll ever come across will in one way or another, benefit the class played by the one making the proposal

The Human Male PC is still Nolan North, same as in the core version of GW2. Could you be more specific about what you mean when you say it sounds significantly changed?

Tonally, we did shoot for a terser, more urgent and in-command feel to the PC’s lines, as arriving on the scene of the Pact fleet wreckage is a much more intense situation than, say, bantering with Lord Faren at a party (as seen in the Human Noble Personal Story).

It totally worked, great voice acting really felt like the player character was taking command.

Sylvan Hounds and Mordremoth corruption

in Lore

Posted by: Jelle.2807

Jelle.2807

Yeah, but there’ve got to be more than two species who’ve died on that spot. We know Ventari did- why no planty centaurs? There were absurd numbers of riders around that island as well, and krait and drakes not too much farther out, certainly within the bounds of the Grove today. If you want to trust the overlay map, in fact, half of Arbor Bay was engulfed. I don’t object to the idea that she used what was around her/rotting in her soil as a template, but of all the variety she’d have to pick from, why humans and dogs? That’s the part that mystifies me.

Yep that’s the mystery of the pale tree, somewhere down the line she not only broke free or mordremoth, but chose to make her ‘mordrem’ based on humans and hounds exclusively. Maybe it’s the influence Ronan had on it, though that doesn’t explain how it could happen.
Hopefully we’ll find out more about the pale tree and her motives in HoT.

Sylvan Hounds and Mordremoth corruption

in Lore

Posted by: Jelle.2807

Jelle.2807

Nope. We don’t even have lore on why she makes hounds- hell, even the explanation for sylvari has some holes in it right now.

Mordremoth seems to design it’s minions based on living creatures it finds. e.g. Mordrem trolls look similar to flesh and blood trolls.
It’s not a huge leap to say the pale tree did this as well, but then with the remains of Ronan’s village. It’s likely there was a hound buried there somewhere.

Warrior ranger and necromancer are all fairly straightforward and robust professions. Good if you want to keep things simple, should be good for new players.

As for the other professions, elementalist engineer and revenant feel more like high apm ones with lots of combos and skill usage if that’s what you prefer. Mesmer thief and guardian are more nuanced professions, mostly.

They do resemble tree frogs somewhat. In fact the second image I posted has heads that look very closely to Randulf’s image, whereas the HoT hylek looks rather different.

All in all real life tree frogs have relatively big heads, but the HoT hylek is just way past that. Nevermind that tree frogs are quite small compared to other frogs, whereas these things are just about as big if not bigger than a norn.

The hands and feet are a good matchthough, those are fine. It’s just that huge massive head.

I realize this is a matter of taste, but personally I very much dislike the cartoony design behind these new big headed Hylek. I realize the big heads and popping eyes are part of the spritely frog look you were going for, but their bodies are just way out of proportions and just look silly. I shudder to think this game is going down the same path as WoW where they continuously cartoonified their game.

I’m assuming these guys are based on an older hylek (heket) model back from GW1, and I must say they looked way better with more realistic proportions.

On another note, the new big Hylek (the one that has you collecting wyvern eggs) looks brilliant. Great job on that one.

Nerf Runes/Sigils! Say NO to RNG !!!

in PvP

Posted by: Jelle.2807

Jelle.2807

I keep seeing people mention “there is no counter-play around the sigils/runes”. I feel these players believe that every attack should be obvious and easy to dodge/block. Let’s not forget that “counter-play” involves a great many deal of aspects far beyond “is something RNG? Is it dodgable?”

Let’s not forget why games like “Magic Cards” are exciting.
You never really are sure what you or your opponent will draw next.
Even though, you put the deck together yourself.

I think it’s important to distinguish the forms of design where randomness comes into play here. In your example of a game of magic, you and your opponent do indeed get a random card drawn, however there usually no random element as to the player’s action when they play a certain card, they know exactly what effect it will have. This is the difference between randomness that encourages the player to be adaptable, and randomness that takes away control of the player and puts it on a diceroll. The latter is not healthy for a competitive game, or at least so long as it’s in moderate amounts.

Mind, I don’t necesarily agree with the sentiment of the thread title, I think the issue goes deeper than just RNG.

Sigil of Fire – your attacks deal additional 5…17…20 fire damage while your enemy is burning.
Sigil of Air – your attacks deal additional 5…17…20 lighting damage while your enemy is stunned or dazed.
Sigil of Earth – your attacks deal additional 5…17…20 earth damage while your enemy is bleeding.
Sigil of Water – your attacks deal additional 5…17…20 frost damage while your enemy is chilled.

Just chiming in to say I agree this is what sigils should have been. Situational effects that enhance builds, not ones that just tack extra power on it. In the case of fire/air, way too much power.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Flipping only exists because many sell their goods for too low a price. To benefit from others passing up potential profit is perfectly fine.

What is bad is, as others have pointed out, if it happens with incredibly rare items and a single person with a lot of gold at their disaposal to completely buy out any competition. That is a serious issue that indeed needs preventing.

Help with a Norn name?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jelle.2807

Jelle.2807

Norn names doesn’t necesarily have to be a norse one, the Norn are also heavily inspired by celtic culture (celtic knots all over their tats). A germanic, dutch (friessian) or pictish celt/scottish (gaelic) name will work. In fact Rhiannon is a celtic name I believe.

For the second name you can either go with somethingdottir, where you pick some other name or you can go for a title. Really, norn aren’t too fussy about their title so long as it’s something they’d boast about or brings them fame.

Phantasm doesn’t need a taunt, it needs to not have to suicide run into melee, get an easily evaded melee attack in just for it to trigger its effect. This way it will A. give its buff in a reasonable and timely fashion and B. cause it not to get killed instantly by aoe and cleaves.
