Simple way to fix Mirage: Remove Ambush skills. Instead, your autoattacks gain additional effects. Scepter gets the improved projectile, Greatsword gets the laser beam that dazes, Axe can still have the Mirage Axes flying around.

No more rooting in place with scepter, no more leaping off a cliff (or rooting you) with sword.

Boom, mirage is half-fixed. Can I haz a cookie?

Perfect Inscriptions during KC

in Guardian

Posted by: Kain Francois.4328

Kain Francois.4328

Hi,

During my Keep Construct run, I encountered a Power Guardian who claimed Perfected Inscriptions is bad during the burn phase of KC.

I’ve also had someone else tell me it’s bad.

However, looking at the trait, it appears to be +216 power for the subsquad.

What is the reason people consider it bad, and what is the alternative for KC? Virtues’ Unscathed Contender?

Tome of Healing :^)

Kain Francois.4328

Post 2:

For our Skill 6, which passes our healing to allies, Receive the Light heals allies 12,403 hp every 30 seconds, Wash the Pain Away’s heals 9246 hp every 25 seconds, and Druid’s Glyph of Rejuvenation heals 6862 hp every 20 seconds, but it applies a GoTL stack. Poor Druid yet again comes out behind, and Guardian comes out first for the crutch-burst heal.

Thus’ far, it seems the only healing capability in which Guardian is behind Tempest is the autoattack, and traited soothing mists.

Next, it becomes a bit harder to compare the data, since the rest of Guardian and Tempest capabilities differ vastly, especially how they trait themselves. A guardian can have a million different builds thanks to Honor.

If we use Honorable Staff for a Staff build, we gain extra boon duration and reduced CDs on staff, which allow us to heal 3827 hp every 6 seconds using Detonate Orb of Light, and Empower heals about 4144.8 hp in a 600 radius with blanket might. (With Full Minstrel Gear, Alacrity, and Firebrand, it is possible to solo-maintain 25 stacks of might on a group, allowing Firebrand to fill in for a chronotank, a PS, and a healer, all at once!) Note that Orb of Light is significantly stronger in PvE, since it scales sharply with the additional Healing Power of Ascended Gear and Rice Balls.

Pure of Heart heals 2092 hp every time aegis ends on someone. This essentially turns Mace #3, Shield #4, and a whole bunch of our traits, into massive heals. Retreat becomes a heal. (It also plays into Firebrand, significantly!)

Signet of Courage is a free 2348 hp heal every 10 seconds.

Selfess Daring heals allies 2361 hp with EVERY dodge!

Traited Sanctuary is the single strongest CC in the game, which heals allies 9143 hp and blocks projectiles as a bonus.

Merciful Intervention heals allies 6071 hp on a 40s cd, but it’s useful for escorting on Matthias due to its 1,200 range.

Anyway, as the data establishes, Guardian is more than capable at healing, with many options. What we lacked were buffs, which is where the Firebrand comes in.

With Liberator’s Vow and Mantra of Solace, we grant additional Aegis + Quickness to allies every 12 seconds. Mantra of Potence also applies more Quickness and Might. Keep in mind, Liberator’s Vow apples Aegis, so it procs Pure of Heart for more 2k hp heals.

With Virtue of Justice, using Ashes of Just allows us to boost ally damage without having to invest in a DPS aspect ourselves, similar to Sun Spirit. This capability is further enhanced with the Grandmaster trait Quickfire.

The real star of the show is the grandmaster trait Loremaster, which finally allows us to use our tomes without losing the passive. This isn’t too important for Tome of Justice, but is super important for Tome of Resolve and Tome of Courage.

Thanks for the grandmaster trait, we can actually use Tome of Healing while maintaining the passive 328hp we heal on allies. What’s important to keep in mind is that Tome of Healing isn’t meant to be a direct source of healing like Celestial Avatar is. Stuff like the Healing Auto is merely a bonus on top of everything else. Epilogue: Eternal Oasis improves the effectiveness of every other heal we are using, allowing things like our dodge to heal 3140 hp, and our Virtue of Resolve passive to heal 436 hp. This is something always available, lasts 8 seconds, and it’s only on a 32 second cooldown, further reduced by alacrity. However, the true beauty of Tome of Resolve is its condition removal. Thanks to Virtues, merely activating it removes 3 conditions from allies. However, once in the tome, activating Radiant Recovery will cure allies of even more conditions, on a very tiny cooldown. This will have practical uses on Slothasor and Matthias, where condition removal is necessary. Even without Virtues, the fact this is ALWAYS on our skillbar means we always have access to a condition cleanse on allies, no matter the utility skills.

Then we get Tome of Courage which, yes, it has an insane cooldown. However, we ALWAYS have access to it! Despite its high cooldown, it can be used effectively on fights like Slothasor, where we can quickly proc Epilogue: Broken Lines and Stalwart Stand in order to protect allies from the Shake attack before it even happens. We also always have access to Valiant Bulwark, which means we will be able to cover as an emergency reflect on Matthias.

As for other goodies the Firebrand brings, we also get Imbued Haste, which increases our Healing Power by a free +250, making the numbers I mentioned before even higher! In my testng during the beta, Detonate Orb of Light was able to exceed 6k on heals!

Also, need I remind you, all these calculations assume a single stack of Invigorated Bulwark. We will likely have many more stacks in raids

As you can see, Firebrand, and Guardian as a whole, isn’t exactly lacking anything in the healing department. It has yet to be seen if we exceed the Tempest, but we definitely heal much more than a Druid.

So why not just use Tempest for pure healing? Why not just use Druid for buffs? Simple: Boons. With the addition of Firebrand, we exceed the Quickness sharing capabilities of Chronomancer, we gain more consistent methods of applying Aegis to allies, and tons of stability. As mentioned before, it may be possible one day that we can tank, heal, apply 25 might, and perma-quickness, all at the same time.

It has yet to be seen how Firebrand performs in practice, but I hope to make it more apparent to you, and perhaps the forums as a whole, that a Guardian has potential to become a viable healer with Firebrand.

The reality of Firebrand is that it’s supposed to provide buffs rather than depend on tome

Such as?

since base guardian is already good enough at healing. Tome is just a bonus.

Have you seen any healer guardians around? Tomes are not a bonus, it’s our profession mechanic, the base of the spec as a whole.

Let’s assume a Guardian has a single proc of Invigorated Bulwark. In a practical setting they will have more, but let’s assume a single stack for now. A properly geared Magi Guardian has 57%+ outgoing healing, with tons of heals to go around.

First, let’s go over the main heal, Mace autoattack. The full chain completes in roughly 3.26 seconds, and heals 1706 hp. Let’s break down how other heals compare:

Druid’s Solar Beam heals 450hp every 1.35 seconds. Multiplied by 3, that is 1350hp every 4.05 seconds, less heals/per second despite a longer duration.

Tempest’s Water Blast heals 1038 hp every 1.2 seconds. Multiplied by 3, it’s 3114 hp every 3.6 seconds.

As we can see from the data, although there is no competing with Tempest auto, the Mace heal itself is very middle of the road, and in fast stronger than the Druid heal.

As for passive heals, Traited Virtues will give us a shareable Virtue of Resolve. Each second it heals 328 hp and increases endurance regen by 15%. Soothing Mist heals for 315 hp each second., while traited Soothing Mist heals 435 hp per second, so let’s assume they are traited to share Auras instead. Druid, do not have a reliable passive heal.

Geyser can heal 7989 hp and partially revives every 20 seconds, Bow of Truth can heal 10,314 hp every 30 seconds, with additional ammunition for emergency clutch situations. Both skills require allies to stay in an aoe for 4 seconds, and are overall similar in capability. As for Druid, yet again they come out behind, with Ancestral Grace healing only 4237 hp every 18 seconds.

Spellbreaker feedback pve only

Kain Francois.4328

The real question is what kind of power build can compete with Berserker, which is one of the highest condi dps in the game?

The obvious answer is niche.

We may have use on Xera with Winds of Disenchantment in order to cheese her in the boon fields. Perhaps also Keep Construct, since he is disabled during Burn phase.

We may also have use in certain FoTM encounters, such as boss of ascalon fractal.

Spellbreaker will not be optimal for raids, and I think that is perfectly fine.

It does, however, seem useful for FoTM. Since we do damage when ripping boons, we are going to have a lot of burst against foes with the instability “No Pain, No Gain”, and the boss of Ascalon Fractal.

Am I the only one at least a little pleased?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Kain Francois.4328

Kain Francois.4328

I’m pretty happy. It’s a condi spec in pve, while multipurpose in pvp. Axe is pretty cool.

If anything, my only complaint are Ambush skills. I would prefer they either not exist, or if they made the ambush skills strictly superior versions of autoattack. Currently, some of the Ambush skills deal less damage, or have weird effects like charging a mesmer forward on 1h Sword. This is a huge problem because the whole point of Mirage is being able to attack while evading on demand. However, Ambushes effectively remove our attack, and lock us in place with something like an unreliable leap.

The simplest way to fix Ambushes is to simply turn them into an improved version of autoattack, with additiona effects. That’s all.

Once they fix Ambushes, I think we will be in a decent place.

When I think of home instance, I think of dailies. What if we had the ability to feed it in the home instance? Perhaps it can give them a very modest buff for the next 24hours? (+10% tail swipe damage?)

I really want to get more use out of the home instance, and giving our new friends a home sounds like the perfect opportunity!

Firebrand: Please change Imbued Haste stats

Kain Francois.4328

Firebrand has a Minor trait you cannot remove: Imbued Haste, which restricts build diversity and complicates tanking in raids.

Gain increased attributes while affected by quickness.

Condition Damage: 250
Healing Power: 250
Toughness: 250

The problem is that it increases Toughness instead of Vitality.

Guardians will not be able to freely use many of the Healing stat combos besides Magi, since it increases increases toughness by a whopping 250. The consequence of this is being unable to use Cleric’s Gear (ascended trinkets without LS3), or Minstrel’s gear (for boon duration builds), since it puts us miles above the Chrono in similar gear.

My suggestion is simple: Change Toughness toughness to Vitality.

Hopefully this is fixed before launch.

Kain Francois.4328

I’m pretty sure the original tomes sucked. I’ll go through each skill, one by one, and even show the skill templates to see how they scale ingame.

Firstly, Tome of Wrath and its subskills. [&BgMkAAA=]

A pathetic 30 seconds and 180s cooldown. 1s cast time where we had to stand still. What’s in it, exactly?

Conflagrate. [&Bv4jAAA=] A bad autoattack which has very bad direct damage and a mere 2s of burn with viper gear. Note this skill was pre-burn change, making it even worse of a skill.

Affliction [&Bv8jAAA=] Surprisingly powerful if facing exactly 2 targets, since it can bounce 5 times. However, if facing only 1 target or more than 2, it quickly falls to mediocrity as a low duration cripple and weakness of only 4s with full viper gear. Context-sensitive skills like this that provide advantages in specific situations can be really good additions, so long as the rest of the kit is balanced. However…

Smiter’s Boon [&BgAkAAA=] It applies might to allies. Can mantain 10 stacks of Might if used off cooldown. Nice on paper, but I really don’t recall others using it.

Zealot’s Fervor [&BgEkAAA=] It’s like a bad version of Feel My Wrath. You can only use it twice during the entire tome duration (180s cd), and it has a 2(!!!) second cast time.

Judgment [&BgIkAAA=] The only skill on the entire kit that actually does decent damage outside the context-specific skill #2. However, it has a MASSIVE, and I mean MASSIVE cast time that just doesn’t justify the damage. Perhaps its combination with stability and huge radius means it might have use in PvP, but in retrospect it really wasn’t worth the risk.

What is Staff good for?

in Guardian

Posted by: Kain Francois.4328

Kain Francois.4328

Staff is a surprisingly high-damage condi weapon in pvp and wvw

Its huge range means you can easily cleave enough targets to trigger Virtue of Justice, which becomes dangerous once trait.

The autoattack also has very little means of countering it, since it’s not a projectile, and it can hit through walls.

However if you want my frank opinion, I don’t think it was designed to be that way. It seems like it was a failed 2012 attempt to make a Healing weapon, that got gutted with nerfs before the game even released, and pushed to the sidelines.

In my opinion, they should increase its healing capabilities and get rid of the cooldown increase on Orb of Light.

Glint was kitteny at might application in PvE, and raids do not need a dedicated Furybot in an environment with Tiger Druid and Signet of Inspiration mesmers. Swiftness has little use in PvE encounters. That leaves protection, which still doesn’t justify using Glint.

What Fractals and Raids want are exclusive buffs not capped by another profession. In the case of Renegade, it has exclusive buffs that increase condition an critical damage.

Sword MH: It’s working as intended. The whole idea of it from a design standpoint is to 1v1 foes. Do you ever wonder why Sword Offhand has a pull? Because you are supposed to isolate them from the group and pick them.

If anything, the problem with Sword is the autoattack. It creates a rift for each foe struck, doing max damage when fighting multiple foes. This, I think, is very counter to its design of devastating an isolated opponent.

Revenant Needs a Major Buff Before PoF

So… Your point is essentially that Glint is a PvP/WvW spec, with perma swiftness for open world. I’m cool with that.

What PvE raid/fractal Revenant needs most of all is damage buffs, damage, damage, more buffs, and more damage. Perhaps a context-sensitive niche that allows it to excel, as well.

It’s hard to tell at the moment with PoF still in beta, but we can theorize it may be meta for Keep Construct, since the boss is completely stunned during the burn phase, and the Spellbreaker would gain full benefit to deal its burst damage.

The outlier for me is Storm Spirit. Vuln is plentiful and the traited swiftness isn’t too useful for fights that stay in spirit range.
The stun is nice but you have to lure your target to the spirit and sacrifice it. Not tactfully sound.

Now I don’t know how you might fix it… Maybe traited pulse 1 sec quickness instead?

EDIT: Oh and Water Spirit is just…it’s just bad.

Water Spirit is good. Perma regen for 1000 range, plus the heal when allies attack. The active effect is nice too.

That said, it could use a buff.

Buff spirits please :D

Spirits already have 1,000 range and can be traited to give boons for that entire radius. That includes traited Stone Spirit’s near-perma protection, which not many classes besides Guardian can do. Traited Sun Spirit pulsing vigor for 1000 range is also pretty ridiculous, on top of its already powerful damage buff.

Sorry, I’m going to have to disagree. They are already meta for dungeons and raids. If they could move they would be OP.

Besides, the whole point of Spirits in Guild Wars as a franchise is that Spirits DO NOT MOVE. You’re supposed to be able to destroy them to remove their buffs. They need a nerf/fix in that respect since their effects remain even after death.

I can agree with the active of Bow of Truth needing a change (among other things). It’s basically a really crappy version of Sanctuary right now. No ally is gonna sit in a healing field for that long unless the healing it provides is absurd or the field provides some sort of protective effect. At the very least they should half the duration and double the healing (in regards to the active effect specifically).

Actually, Bow of Truth is great in a healing build. It’s one of the few ranged healing options in the game that can keep a whole group of 10 people alive for 9 second intervals, twice during the bow’s uptime.

The main problem is that Bow of Truth has such a huge cooldown. Again it’s a common problem with Spirit Weapons. But the effect itself is great, and it would be severely missed.

The reason why Bow of Truth is an issue (besides recharge) isn’t because of the effect, but the fact that it replaces a potential offensive spirit weapon, limiting us to only Hammer and Sword when we want offensive spirit weapons.

I guess if I wanted to nitpick, the trait to improve Bow of Truth is in Zeal, despite being exclusively a Healing skill. Perhaps Bow of Truth shouldn’t have been a Spirit Weapon in the first place, but its active a Consecration.

Similarly, Shield of Courage should’ve also been a consecration.

Support Spirit Weapons honestly have no business being Spirit Weapons in the first place.

Spirit weapons ideas

in Guardian

Kain Francois.4328

I think the only issue with spirit weapons is that they do not function as proper minions, and have underwhelming effects.

What I mean by this?

Firstly, they have a huge downtime. Recharge does not start until after a spirit dies. For the effects they provide, it is very whelming.

Second, only one of our spirit weapons function as genuine minion. Shield of Courage is more of a PBAoE projectile block, while Bow of Truth is a heal. Hammer is nothing more than a knockback machine, and does poor damage. Leaving us with Sword of Wrath, but that deals only slightly less damage than Hammer but not high enough to justify the requirements.

There may be use of spirit weapons in a Burn condition build. However, they are weak in current state. Furthermore, Hammer would need its passive knockback removed or replaced with knockdown.

Guardian was THE backbone of dungeon runs prior to HoT. Our utilities were absolutely necessary to survive some of the encounters. Wall of Reflectionw was necessary for Sorrow’s Furnace path 1, for example. And in AC Exp we had to place a Cleansing Flames down for the spider boss.

It’s become cheesed with the introduction of breakbars and power creep, but don’t forget it wasn’t always like that.

HoT made a huge mistake giving us the pvp spec. But I don’t think it was that bad.

Guardians have been a support-heavy class right up until the release of Heart of Thorns. In fact, during the days of dungeon running, people OFTEN would depend on a Guardian for things like Aegis, Wall of Reflection, and Stability.

Now the waters are a little muddy. We have a very efficient Magi healing build thanks to the traitlines of Honor and Virtues, but it doesn’t do much besides heal, making it a tiny wee bit inferior to Druid and unrecognized in today’s meta.

Can we PLEASE have a healer spec?

in Guardian

Posted by: Kain Francois.4328

Kain Francois.4328

I have since updated OP with my newer opinions. It seems that Magi Guardian with Mace/Shield is actually a VERY good combo for healing if you share Virtue of Resolve and equip Signet of Courage. For utilities, you have Sanctuary, Merciful Intervention (the shadowstep that heals 4000+ on allies), and Bow of Truth. Take the trait that heals off aegis, too. Valor and Virtues will be glued to your traits, but the third traitline can be swapped with ease, and all augment your healing capabilities in some way. Radiance improves signets and thus your Signet of Courage passives every, while Honor can reduce shield and meditation cd, Zeal reduces Spirit Weapon cd for more bow of truth uber heals.

I was able to successfully heal groups through Gorseval No Updraft and Keep Construct.

The problem when I say “viable” is Grace of the Land, and Spirits. First, despite Grace of the Land being 10-man now, pugs have yet to adapt to a single-druid rotation. Secondly, because spirits are 5-man only, when we run a mirror comp, the second group does not get spirit buffs.

My suggestions would be to add Grace of the Land to Empower on staff, and to simply change Ranger spirits to 10man. If we compromise like alacrity and add Grace stacks to other healers (or remove it from the game, frankly), and allow spirits to be 10man, we will see a new meta where people use a 1-druid meta, with options for second class to be a versatile healer.

Personally, I like the way skill 2 has a short enough cooldown

The single problem with skill 2 is its radius.

Try switching between solar beam on druid to Orb of Light on Guardian, you will see what I mean. Allies do not receive heals unless standing exactly inside the orb, while Solar Beam has a wider area of effect.

If they fix that, then Guardians will be able to heal quite well.

Of course, the alternative is to not increase the recharge on detonate. That is a stupid mechanic due to WvW fears.

1 – Heals allies when used like Water 1 for ele on staff.
2 – Increased base CD and area targetted, travels to that area and blows up there.
3 – Symbol should heal or cleanse conditions when dropped (like how Longbow burns when it is dropped).
4 – Remove might, make it heal per pulse instead of at the end, and make it give 5 stacks of GotL at the end.
5 – Heals those who pass through it.

Boom, Staff is fixed!

Was that so hard?
