I imagine 2 years from now people will still call this game new, right?

You name a single MMO that came into it’s own during the first year. That was fleshed out with a lot of end game content. Just one. I’ll wait here.

Most MMOs have either no end game, or tiny worlds, or tons of bugs. No one has a big huge world with lots of content and lots of end game and lots of bugs at launch nor do they have all that stuff a year later.

And you know, if it were easy, someone would have done it.

Rift came pretty close, except that the world was very small at launch and there were still some major gaffs. And people complained about no end game content.

Aion

Aion?? Did you even play the game? Did you visit the forums?

Aion released with a big world that had no quests in it. People ran out of quests completely and had to farm mobs over and over again to level in order to get to the PVP side of the game, so they could level some more.

The game had tons of bugs, not enough quests…and after the Asian release, when it released in the states, the retention rate was dreadful because of this.

Asians don’t mind EXTREMLELY grindy games and that’s really what Aion gave you. Not more content. A longer wait to get through the content they gave you. Eventually Aion has more content and more ques and more things to do…but that was more than two years after release.

I can’t even imagine of all the possible games you’d bring up Aion. I remember people freaking out over the fact that you simply ran out of quests and there was no way to level up without just farming the same bosses over and over and over again, until you leveled.

By western standards you could call it grindy, but i’d come from Korean games where the level cap was like 150. So i wouldn’t call it grindy at all. And you didn’t have to farm or grind to get to the PVP side of the game what are u on about? You could go to the abyss at level 20 and start entering rifts at level 20. I could get to level 10 in 2 hours and reach level 20 within a day. It was not hard to level at all.

Can’t comment on quests because I leveled through PVP and dungeons, I only really did pvp content, the abyss, forts and rifts were pretty solid and were good end game.

Did not experience any bugs.

Speak to anyone who played Aion at it’s release and that was the best the game ever was (expect for when they added Dreg) I can tell Vayne you didn’t reahc max or even half way .

I certainly reached more than halfway to max level. The PvP balanced was complained about everywhere. The whole Abyss thing lost more players than it kept. As for your personal taste in grind, or that the game’s PvE at least released incomplete, that’s again a personal taste.

It’s like people in this game who complain PvP released incomplete. The game was incomplete. It’s really that simple.

You could tell by the number of complaints on the forums.

You have no idea what I have and haven’t played but obviously we’re approach games from completely different angles. But to say the game had no bugs because you didn’t encounter any is just ridiculous. Did you even see the bug list at launch? It was many many pages long.

Edit: If you happened to have played the Western release of Aion, you’ll note it was two years after the Eastern release. The western release was the release of a two year old game, in much the same way Terra’s western release didn’t have all the problems that a new new release had. Some of those bugs were fixed by the time the game reached the west. And it still had tons of bugs.

So you reached level 25 and didn’t realise you could start pvping the moment you hit 20 and even got a quest that sent you to the opposite factions territory to pvp.

There are always people complaining about imbalance, doesn’t mean they are right, in Aion , people were only complaining about sins because of their great potential in rifting but weak potential in fort raiding. The people who wanted to pve were getting disturbed by twink sins who would come out of no where and 3 shot them. Like in GW2 theives pick of opponents easily.

And i did not write there are no bugs, if you actually read what i typed i wrote “Did not experience any bugs” not “There are no bugs”.

You are joking right ???????? I remember the loud and long screaming over the imbalances etc on Aion. Still not fixed to this day either

Well i did play a sin, and pvp was solid till they tweaked everything in the Balauar patch. They killed my class.

I only pvped and Rifts, Forts, Abyss.. were solid in the first month of release.

Yoh is very right, action combat needs action on both ends. Monster Hunter is the best feeling game I’ve played in a long time.

I’m getting goosebumps imagining the Shatterer acting like a Rathalos (including hunting them down accross the zone)

Kitten you for making me think about getting a Wii U , i bloody love MH

Fellow monster hunter fans

I just wish this game could give me the same epic feeling of fighting a Barioth, Tigerex, Narcarugua, Diablos!!! kitten i would come back to this game in a heartbeat goes back to playing MH3G xD

This is correct.

Why Do Most GW2 Players Hate Hard Content?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kakeru.2873

Kakeru.2873

As far as GW2 goes its still new, almost a year old. Yes we want more challenging content and it will come in time. Most of the dungeons have unfinished content in them so maybe they will extend them.

What I do dislike about GW2 is how unrewarding it can be most of the time. No matter how well you play, how fast you are, how hard you hit or how much you kill it all comes down to that RNG.

If i could get a 6 person party and have the RNG being a little more forgiving I’d be happy.

Only coming up to a year old BUT IT’S STILL NEW GUYS! Gw2 is still new man whole 5 years of development and a year of actual release BUT STILL NEW GUYZ.

It’s a dead argument, you can no longer use the “the game’s new”.

e-sports?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kakeru.2873

Kakeru.2873

MMO’s generally do not become e-sports. Guild Wars 2 will never be an exception.

As of now, we do not really know if sPvP is balanced as it has not been picked up competitively. There are no tournaments with monetary prizes and as such no one has gone “pro” in it. If it ever did, I guarantee some combination of classes/builds would be discovered and abused. Anet would have to keep up with patching sPvP and updating it with new content about every week to keep people hooked. sPvP will become vastly different than PvE, which is something Anet is against. This will never happen.

The other issue occurs in match length and actual interest by observers in the match. Playing sPvP is interesting, but watching it is a real snooze fest and does not generate much excitement. Do you see players with large viewer counts playing sPvP on twich? Nope, hardly anyone streams this game and nobody of interest does. There is absolutely no interest in watching other people play the game. That is a big problem if you want to make it an e-sport.

The last major issue is competition. Anet would have severe competition with other e-sport games and unless they spent a ton of money promoting the game as an e-sport, they will only just be pushed out by bigger e-sport games.

Moral: Leave e-sports to the arena games.

MMO’s generally do not become e-sports. Guild Wars 2 will never be an exception.

Looks at EVE Online.

I swear the majority of people playing GW2 actually don’t like the MMORPG genre at all, and are constantly coming up with ways to push GW2 out of the mmorpg genre and turn it into an Action Adventure Online Game.

First, the roles and dissolved and almost removed to the point where, 9 times out of 10 someone is playing a damage dealing role. “soft” classes that can do everything. Next we remove the need for grouping and social interaction to tackle content, next we remove levels and make this a Action World Simulator Online.

@ the guy who mentioned monster hunter, MH isn’t an rpg of any sort and also there kind of are levels (there are HR ranks) but they don’t effect your character in anyway they just allow you to face harder monsters.

I like how you assume that MMORPG requires leveling, stat increases, gear grinds, healers and tanks.

These design systems are primitive and obsolete. Just like the elevator man and soon paper mail.

Stats, gear, levels, roles however soft ARE the basis of RPGS. Take them away and the game isn’t an RPG it becomes an Action game.

GW2 encourages teamwork and cooperation. Not a bad lesson for real life.

What ? Guild wars 2 is more about working beside people rather than with people. Rather than depending on other people to fill a role and support you, it’s everyman for themselves.

None of the content requires any sort of co-operation or communication to be complete.

I can tell you now, by the end of this year people would of had enough and the majority of pvp players will just leave this game.

People forget the reason we are all here is because since August 2012 there have been NO Big western game releases, the reason Anet rushed there game out of the door was because they saw that they would have 0 competition meaning they have all the market and all the players to themselves.

Wait until the Big MMOS release near the end of this year, Wildstar, The Elder Scrolls Online, Archage (not this year but), B&S… when people have more options they won’t be willing to put up with Anet’s terrible job at handling this games PVP they will just leave and not come back.

I am 48 and I must agree with Gundam Zephyr. Why be proud of being sloppy? Yes it takes time and I am the last to complain about peoples writing skills but ill thought out and poorly written does not make me want to take the effort to figure out what it is you (not directed at anyone specifically) are getting at. Time away from school is no more an excuse that someone in school making what is basically the same point.

I’m reading a lot of poorly written posts by so-called ‘40 and 50 year olds.’ Did you people actually go to school? I was under the impression the public school system is getting worse, not better, as time goes on.

As for the topic itself, I love the SAB. I’m quite a fan of exploring and platforming. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Super Mario 64 are two of my favorite games ever. SAB appeals to players like me, who enjoy doing things in-game that don’t necessarily get us better loot or achieve specific ‘hardcore’ goals. It’s just a way to blow off steam and enjoy a little bit of what made games like Super Mario 64 so iconic in their hay day.

P.S. I’m 25.

The longer it’s been since you’ve been to school, the less you remember about things like grammar, and sentence structure. People who don’t use the written word often will often not be better at it than people who use it frequently. How about a bit of tolerance?

The way schools teach has indeed changed quite a bit. There are, from my point of view anyway, huge omissions in the current day curriculum. Calling people out for not typing or speaking well, it’s just not cool. Not to mention for many people, English might not even be a first language.

And I just make a lot of typos because I make a lot of posts and don’t want to spend the time constantly rereading them.

What about people who aren’t as educated, people who aren’t as smart, people who don’t speak English as a primary language. What about people who suffer from insomnia and have trouble concentrating.

Tolerance doesn’t mean I’m tolerating someone being “sloppy”. I don’t know anyone’s personal situation here. Maybe they’re on prescription meds and it affects their ability to focus…who knows.

A bit of tolerance goes a long way.

English isn’t my first language and I often miss out words due to dyslexia or type sentences as I would speak them irl.

People forget things like that.

I’ve finally realised why I can’t enjoy or begin to enjoy this game even though it’s amazing and is in my favorite genre.

I’m not the demographic at which they are aiming for.

With the “Super Box Adventure” commercial I realised GW2 is made for the 35 year old gamers, or gamers generally older than me in their late 20s to 30s, who love this nostalgic feeling of 8bit games and bad american commercials. I didn’t grow up with this so to me it’s just not something I can relate to on any level.

Did you grow up in the middle ages when there were witches and wizards and saints would slay dragrons, the kings and queens would stay in their castles and the knights of the land would go forth and do their bidding?

Surely you must be too old to still be gaming….

No, I’m not even in my 20s

That is really sad.. my daughter is an young adult and she loves the game.. Seems like some of your generation just don’t know what fun or know how to have fun is..

So… because i don’t particuly enjoy 8-bit and don’t really like the whole retro gaming thing I don’t know what fun is or how to have it?

“Grrr! I’m mad this game isn’t grimdark! Grrr!”

Been saying this since last night! hahaha!

It’s soooo funny! Like, they didn’t realize this BEFORE the SAB? It took THIS to make them realize? haha

What’s with everyone dolling out their age as a reason for why they don’t like something? Jesus, some of you people are going to be grey, in rockers, and begging to be taken off life support by the time you’re 37 with the way you talk.

“WELL I’M 31 CLEARLY THIS GAME OFFENDS MY SUPERIOR TASTES.”

If you don’t like it fine, but stop acting like “your age” inherently means anything. It only means something if you let it. It’s so annoying to read. I’m all for people not liking things and expressing why, but again, age is inherently meaningless here. We are talking about a video game, not someone trying to attend prom night 15 years after they have graduated from HS.

Well age clearly is a factor here. As the the superbox commercial and 8bit in general is homage to some gamers childhood and growing up. Sometime I didn’t grow up with and do not understand or enjoy in any particular way. I do not relate to it in anyway 1 because of my age and 2 because of my interests. So age kinda is a factor.

Now I’m not trying to bash on TESO, because I am anticipating it. But rather, the fact that another company is taking the ideas from GW2 and integrating into their game used to be something that very popularly happened to WoW. And GW2 is only half a year old.

That’s just fascinating in my opinion.

I think you’ll find that TESO is taking its inspiration from multiple sources not just GW2.

Well of course it is, any MMO takes inspiration from multiple MMO’s, but I mean, 4 man dungeons, dodging by double tapping a directions, weapon swapping, combo fields, weapon-specific skills. The list does indeed go on, it sounds like GW2 in Tamriel.

I know obviously they’re mixing in some traditional elder scrolls mechanics but it literally sounds to me like it’s GW2 Meets Elder Scrolls, and that’s the game. I’m not bashing either game either, it’s just the observation I’ve made.

Because double tapping to dodge has never been in a game ever….
Because 4 man dungeons have never been done anywhere……
Because weapon swaping is something COMPLETELY NEW to MMOS!….
Because combo fields have NEVER been done before in ANY MMO EVER! cough FF MMO/cough*
Because Weapon Specific skills have never been done ever!!!!

It’s so funny how horribly informed you are :/

And what the poster you responded to ment was, TESO is taking more from DAoC than GW2, even some of the devs are people who worked on the original DAoC itself/

GW2 isn’t a grind at all, it’s the least grind MMO I’ve ever played. And I’ve played them all. From Meridian 59, The Realm, Ultima Online Diablo 1,2,3 GW1, WOW, Asheron’s Call, SRO, DS, WH, SWTOR and everything in-between.

I can tell by the OPs stance that the only MMO they’ve ever played or are ‘used to’ is WOW. WOW is not the standard, it’s a watered down copy of a copy.

In GW2 I have never had to grind, I go from event to event, quest to quest and get double XP, the reward is the XP, if you are max level the reward should be PvP, if you are looking for the best ‘gear’, use this thing called the auction house.

GW2 isn’t a grind at all, it’s the least grind MMO – clearly subjective.

People need to start their posts stating that it’s their experience or opinion rather than adding it on at the end. It seems like instead of adding to the discussion in a meaningful way you are just saying here’s what i say it’s right because I say it is.

And that’s what your post is. For me GW2 was an endless meaningless grind. The last thing me and the one person left playing i knew did before we quit was farm mats which we then realised what for and we quit.

How Many Play GW2?

Since there are no official numbers there are likely less then 10% of the people that bought the game actually still playing it.

If it were any impressive amount of people then ArenaNet would be publishing the numbers far and wide.

So I’d say under 100’000, probably more like 20’000-50’000 regular players.

You can guesstimate the number of players roughly by the amount of WvW worlds: there are currently about 50 worlds with likely no more then a few thousand players in total (maybe even less). Not sure how many players fit on a single world but at least in the case of WOW a “full” shard has about 1’500 players per faction maximum.

But anyway… no numbers from the devs = it’s not going well. Otherwise they’d be hyping it to attract more investors for their future products and expansions etc.

I agree with this guy.

Remember that GW2 sold 3 mil over a total of 6 months, and like 1.5 on launch. Meaning box sales took 6 months to reach 3 mil. While games like Diablo 3 which sold 6 million and MOP (WOW) sold something like 2.6 mil on launch are also still growing in box sales.

But as we know there was a huge fiacso around Diablo and it has lost a huge amount of it’s followers much like GW2 with the lost shores update, one of the reasons it took so long for GW2 the on quote “Fastest growing MMO” to reach half of what Diablo 3 sold on launch was because of what happened there.

Also GW2 isn’t a game that most people play as their main game, it’s mostly a casual experience that people play every now and then there is no dedication needed (as said in their manifesto) people often have 3 months break come back for a week then have another break.

From personal experience, Out of 30 people I know that bought this game 0 people are currently playing it, 25 out of the 30 left in the first month of release (September not August), 5 out of that 25 went back to Wow, 7 out of that 25 went to Tera, and the remaining 13 aren’t currently playing any mmos. The 5 people that didnt quit, only one reached max level in november and quit in december.

Guild Wars 2's Trinity

Bring back tanking, having a shield in PvE is pretty worthless.
Bring back healing roles – so that tanking can be possible.

Having a focus in off-hand as guardian is far better than shield in off-hand.
Every class can fulfill all 3? yah right… Have you seen the aggro mechanics? also lack of support/healing skills for some classes.
Sorry but if you’re not dps as a warrior you’re either bored with pure dps or playing it wrong. Warrior is top dps & that’s the best thing you can bring to a group. If you’re not supporting your team with useful boons & blowing “Save Yourselves!” every time it’s off CD to “burst” as guardian.. you should either be doing pvp or you’re playing it wrong… play a warrior if you want heavy armor dps.

Best utilities – Mesmer, Best support – Guardian Best dps – warrior.

OP is 100% correct, don’t kid yourself. At least if we had a real trinity people would have a defined place & sense of being wanted. Basically any class can replace another class, nobody has any responsibility in the game, you could be wearing Lv.60 gear at lv.80, you can tunnel vision as much as you want since it’s basically all about your own survival – few play on teamwork – stop kidding yourselves that trinity roles like tank & healer aren’t important.

You’re probably playing a different game than the rest of us. Some people play to have fun. Guild Wars 2 was designed for this.

If you’re telling people they’re playing it wrong…you’re playing it wrong.

Fencers is that you?

There is nothing u can do.

Gw2 has one of the most terrible enemy AI, I have seen in a game, they just line up and take it, they don’t move expect in random directions (see the Tameni) .

TESO boost actual AI which there mobs, I just say if your wanting a challanege with World Content and such GW2 isn’t the game for you, if you want a casual experience were you can sit afk and press 1 then lucky you :P

March 26 update - Pre patch notes

I want to be teased and surprised. I like the lack of early patch notes. It also leads to less rushing and more polish (see sig)

The “expansion worth of content” really did happen but not like a traditional expansion. Just print out the full patch notes for january and february and you’ll see they take up several pages in word. That’s a ton of changes. Mostly improvements, which is exactly what an expansion is about… fleshing out the game experience.

If you think a few pages of bug fixes and changes on a patch notes is an “expansion’s worth of content” Then the last 5 patches lol has had were all expansions.

An expansion is about fleshing out the game. While most games tack on a few useless levels, and because of that a few areas, that’s not the core idea of an expansion. Filling in gaps of the game is actually the relevant part of an expansion.

Compare to WoW. Obviously, the 40 man raid system didn’t work, and the gear system was hopelessly convoluted leading to meaningless pvp. Instead of rebalancing the existing game, they threw it all out, tacked on 10 levels and made all existing gear with failed stats irrelevant. Not only that, but they had you pay 40 euros for what was basically a service pack to vanilla. If no one does Molten Core, there’s no need to fix it. That is the easy solution which has become the MMO standard.

As such, guild missions, dungeon overhaul, fleshing out Southsun Cove/Consortium, making WvW relevant … those would be core features of an expansion. However, instead of slapping on a few arbitrary levels and creating all that content from scratch, a.net decided to actually work with the existing content. Imho a far superior yet decidedly more difficult position.

The core philosophy of the jan/feb/march patches clearly resembles what an expansion pack is about, minus the active destruction of existing content. I agree 100% with that position.

You have sugar coated everything. I’m too tired to come up with a proper response now. but i will later.

This game isn't for you...

*If you like gear progression… this game isn’t for you
*If you like playing a certain role in trinity… this game isn’t for you
*If you like raids… this game isn’t for you
*If you like mounts… this game isn’t for you
*If you like amateur pvp with different modes… this game isn’t for you
*If you like semi-amateur pvp with ladders etc like wow… this game isn’t for you
*If you like pro-pvp like moba… this game isn’t for you
*If you like real open world pvp… this game isn’t for you
*Most importantly if you like to have a goal… this game isn’t for you

1) We have gear progression, just not WoW tiered style
2) If you mean challenging large-scale fight, yes. World bosses are cool though but agree on this point.
3) True but important to mention Waypoints as a faster form of travel than you can do in other games
4) PvP is growing, making sure that every mode works as intended before adding more. Going to have to disagree with this after the addition of the newest maps with unique objectives to just conquest.
5) No clue what moba is so can’t comment and I don’t do pro-pvp
6) WvW took open world pvp to the next level, putting standard world pvp to shame in my opinion.
7) I try to be nice and open to thing but had to laugh at no goals. Need to change the wording on that because there are a million and one goals in this game

Just wanted to put my input in as we’re all welcome to our own opinions.

> Doesn’t know what a moba is
>Thinks this games pvp community is growing.

Fyi mate, the moba Lol has one of the most professional esports scene round atm with 5 million active players, you know the esports that GW2 was abvertised as?

You realise that this games pv kitten hrinking not growing, do you realise that there are 2 pro NA teams and like 3 pro EU teams, there are no paid tournaments, sponsorships, an average of 200 viewers on twitch.

You know twitch the website used to stream gaming, runscape has something like an average of 500 viewers and lol an average of 100k viewers and Wow an average of 20k players.

So easy it hurts

Its a casual MMO meant for pick up and play, they made the game accessible to anyone meaning anyone can do anything type of content meaning for people with any sort of mmo background the game feels mindnumbingly easy .

No Love for WvWvW I see yet again bet it’s all going to come in the expansion pack in August.

There is no expansion pack in August :S and no expansion this year AT ALL.

First of all, the WvW changes will be in this update – it has been confirmed by devs. The small blurb about the living story obviously isn’t going to be the entire update…

For the expansion, it is not confirmed when it will happen, but this year is definitely not out of the question.

WvWvW update is not an expansion and rather features that should of been implemented either with release or within months of release like individual actual progression.

Also no expansion this year http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/03/05/no-guild-wars-2-expansions-currently-planned.

This “Living Story” is their idea of an expansion.

If they weren’t stealthing off your pet they would stealth off you. Atleast this way your not taking the inital damage.

I dont see you shutting down a thief ablity to go into stealth no matter what you class are.

You can dodge CnD, your pet can’t. I’ve done it many times, and it kills me that even though I had the skill to pay attention to the animation and dodge it, the thief can just turn around and go cnd off a pet that won’t dodge.

Yeah this, it’s actually a pretty good tactic to use against thieves because it forces them to blow cooldowns to enter stealth. But as pointed out if you send in your pet any decent thief will use your pet to stealth and then hit you with the burst/opening conditions.

As pointed out though, BM specs loose a lot of DPS because of this.

Blow cooldowns ? you realise theifs have NO cooldowns on 1 to 5 skills right? It isn’t even a waste of innitative as during the stealth duration 50 to 100% of inniative used is restored depending on the build of the thief.
