Do you hate on Valkyrie/ Soldier’s/ Rabid sets for not contributing as much as Beserker/ Knight’s / Carrion sets too? Do you hate on people who wear sub-exotic gear too? I don’t know, the argument that Magic Find decreases efficiency loses it’s appeal once you realize that you do roughly the same damage in exotic Soldier’s as masterwork MF.

That being said, I find the haters quite hypocritical that the exact same people are fine with sub-exotics and pirateish gear, which essentially are the same/weaker than magic find sets, and still hate on magic find because it is weaker. I say go the whole way for consistency’s sake.

So let’s start bashing people who wear Valkyrie’s. Why are you not using Beserker’s good sir? And those offensive Soldier stats! Two minor stats all for yourself? How selfish!

Now that I think of it, it does seem to be happening in CoF 1 at least.

CM Exp Since Update

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Kid Taylor.5479

Kid Taylor.5479

I believe that I have explained this before but I’ll do it again. I believe that CM is a dungeon which can prove extremely fatal as it is highly amped up in difficulty and is a large attraction to new dungeon players.

As CM was exploited/farmed heavily in a similar fashion to today’s CoF path 1, CM had its difficulty increased greatly, resulting in mobs that have very powerful conditions and damage that would be difficult to counter even with level 80s. It is also unnaturally long and doing it the “right” way may lead to anywhere from a 25~40 minute run depending on how experienced your group is.

That high difficulty is combined with people who run CM as a newcomer. From my perspective, CM is a newcomer magnet, as people who just hit 80 and want to run dungeons for the first time may pick CM as they believe it to be easy, and at the same time, they do not want to look like noobs by playing AC, so the pick the supposedly “second easiest dungeon” to run. This will also allow newcomers to blend in since it will be believed that they are “one step up” from the easiest dungeon in the game.

Furthermore, CM does not give unique armor. Unless one is going for looks, the rabid, rampagers exotics that can be obtained can be easily found in HoTW and AC respectively, which are much more easily found. Only Shaman’s is unique to CM and you will be hard pressed to find anyone who specifically wants Shaman’s gear. Runes of Noble is easily replaced by Runes of Pirate which are relatively cheap on the market. This causes experienced players to shun CM as there are better alternatives.

So yes, quite a few factors play in causing playing CM to mostly be either a long, arduous experience or just plain hair-splitting.

CoF P1 Elitism, gold farmers and efficiency.

Kid Taylor.5479

First, I would like to contest the assumption that you can make 6-7 gold per run. The fastest recorded CoF 1 run is seven minutes, with a range of a seven minute low to a 9+ minute high for speed runs.

Let’s assume that you are able to do it at the fastest speed. A base CoF 1 run would net 15+21 silver from bosses. Throw in 5s for the chests that appear. So you have around 40 silver per run at base.

Assuming you run consecutively, you would be able to manage 8 runs in an hour, which will net you a profit of 40 * 8 + X where X is the silver from dungeon completion.

Now, if you run it consecutively, you might have noticed that the silver rewards for completion diminish after every run, from 26 > 21 > 13 and so on so forth. You are simply not able to reach 6-7 gold even if completion silver did not diminish. At most you would be able to earn half that amount, at max 4g, diminishing rapidly after first hour.

My question now is, is this an honest mistake? Or has there been something wrong with my calculations?

I do think there is something wrong with how people are requesting for 4x warriors and 1x mesmer, but what exactly is your point? That the existence of such groups negate the existence of other groups which farm CoF 1? There is high demand for such groups and yet there is nothing that prevents you from forming such a team. The only difference is roughly having a 7~9 minute run extended to a 12~15 minute run. Besides, CoF 1 will be changed in the next patch anyway.

There is nothing “competitive” about running dungeons, no speed clear scoreboards, no killboards at the end, no dps race. You are free to form your own groups as you see fit. Bearing this in mind, you are not losing out on anything at all. The only problem that may arise might be from 1) extremely extremely low takeup rates to farm path 1 without that specific composition (highly unlikely, and would have to be absymally low to justify a change) or 2) Prices of Omnomberry MF/Gold food goes up dramatically, speed running will be justified due to high cost (likely, since prices have been rising).

How we break the spvp learning curve

in PvP

Posted by: Kid Taylor.5479

Kid Taylor.5479

I don’t think sPvP has a learning curve… Many high profile live streamers flocked to GW2 on release and left just as quickly because it is immediately recognizable as an imbalanced PvP game. The people who stayed all populate the most OP and imbalanced class/traits possible and pretty much live on a loop playing against the same teams day in and day out because there is no sPvP community.

The first step is to not live in denial and make excuses that the game didn’t have enough popularity or people didn’t know how to play. The people played it and didn’t like it and moved on. Address that. Fix the game. Maybe people will come back.

I agree, the player base is quite limited already. To get more people to play Spvp, you are trying to draw from the people who are currently playing Guild Wars 2 right now. There is little to no external audience to reach out to.

If people are not interested in the first place, spvp will remain unpopulated with little people playing.

I also find the community to have some sort of collective cognitive dissonance about wanting new people playing pvp in this game. On one hand, more people would definitely increase the popularity of this area of gameplay in Guild Wars 2. on the other hand, the community repeatedly makes remarks about how 8v8 hotjoin is bad, is for noobs, you don’t learn anything from it. How only 5v5 matters.

Guess what, the first game mode that people coming into pvp play is most likely 8v8. Why would they want to continue playing if they are met with hostile and elitist attitudes as such? The hardcore players who have invested time and money into playing pvp are going to stay, but the casual players are not.

Fractals of The Mists Upcoming Segregation

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Kid Taylor.5479

Kid Taylor.5479

What I think will happen is that people who run fractals will separate themselves into tiers. There are two types of players: People who are in it for the level advancement, and people who are in it for the farm/dailies. Such a system will benefit both.

For example, the first tier would be 1-9, so people of that range will play with each other. If the difficulty scale is set at 9 at highest, people lower than 9 will be able to advance, and people who want to get some easy relics will still be satisfied as the difficulty difference is negligible.

The second tier would be 10-15/20. At this point, agony starts to take effect, and people who are doing this tier are starting out to acquire ascended rings. Dailies would also give pristine relics, so setting the difficulty at 16/20 would allow people who want to advance and get daily rewards to group together at the same time.

Ideally, each tier would be separated by a significant change in mechanics that increase the difficulty in completing the fractal. Since I have not played fractals much, I am unsure of the difficulty changes as fractals go beyond the level 30 ranges.

I very honestly doubt it. The price went up a week or so ago to the above 1s prices recently. From gw2spidy, I notice that T5 prices took a large drop on 17-17th December due to large influx of supply. Also, I guess that the snowflake exploit lowered demand for them due to free ectos being created, reducing need for T5 materials. Prices have steadily increased over the past few days and appear to be going stabilizing at the 1s mark.

The price is most unnatural and I will be looking more into it.

I think there is a technical difficulty in implementing your suggestion. I imagine it would be difficult to return tokens instead of gold. For now, I believe that the confirmation system is adequate in preventing mistakes such as this.

New to dungeons?

in Players Helping Players

I concur on the need to speak up if you are new to a dungeon. The community overall is much more mature here than in other MMOs so there is really little chance that you will be laughed at if you are new.

A common culprit and killer when not speaking up can be found in CM. CM is a much tougher and longer dungeon for new people even when they come with experience with Catacombs.

There are certain parts of the dungeon which require very good teamwork like the door bombing part which need everyone to be informed of. I would very much rather people say “I am new to this path” than have someone go in and makes things difficult by failing that portion.

Is there difference between "op" and "cheap"

in PvP

Posted by: Kid Taylor.5479

Kid Taylor.5479

Since OP has framed the question in terms of fighting games, I thought this video might be relevant:

http://youtu.be/tehc8UP--VE?t=3m01s

The video talks about a fighting game which had to be completely rebalanced around a single character because that character was really really powerful and strategies revolved around that single character.

Another point raised is that “a combination of a team is what you might want to consider broken”. In a team-based game, a different perspective could be that certain team setups are broken and gives a gigantic advantage to the team using it. So rather than a single character being broken, it may be certain characters working together that are broken.

Video also mentions some opinions on what makes a broken vs powerful character:

- How safe are they when they do stuff
- How punishable are they on their moves
- Ease of playability, how long it takes to learn

Dungeon Equipped Gear Poll

Comparing the stats of a masterwork to an exotic, there is a large gap. It makes me wonder why aren’t there more people hating on others who wear “pirateish” gear, a sure sign of armor below the level of exotics. It also makes me wonder whether magic find hate is more of a “monkey see, monkey do” syndrome, as I hardly encounter this kind of dislike towards on particular armor set ingame, but see it often on the forums.

Arah dungeon- seers path is impossible to finish.

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Kid Taylor.5479

Kid Taylor.5479

After three hours and twenty two minutes, I have finally cleared this paticular path which has given me much pain in the past with a team of 1 mesmer, 1 engineer, 1 elementalist, 1 warrior, 1 ranger. It took very accurate running of sparks after phase 2 (because we lacked about 10% of Simin’s hp in dps ro do it in 2) to wait on Time Warp’s cool down, before setting down a second time warp in phase 5 or phase 6, while the dps group constantly kept her health low.

It should be noted that the group that I ran with tried and tried and tried again until we wore it down though.

Some stuff I noticed after going through the footage I recorded of the hour long fight:

1. “Worship the power of Zhaitan” appears to be the cue before her turning invisible. I think this is the single most important piece of information that I don’t see posted on the forums. Knowing this could save some time by moving the people to their positions for spark running. It will also prevent any bad time warps. I can’t get a bead for the time interval between sparks appearing and when she says this, but from the video it seems to be seven seconds.

There is an anomaly though. At the “g” of “high” in her name, she will say this phrase again but she will not turn invisible.

2. Shuguard’s diagram in the page before this was extremely extremely helpful. There is a proper way to run sparks with two people only. A few things need to be ensured while spark running. A. Who will do north 2 sparks, who will do south 3 sparks. B Backup runners. C. Which person slots sparks in first to avoid cross aggro. D. Knowledge of what phase Simin is on.

3. The cooldown for phase 2’s invisibility is 1 minute. This timing should be fairly accurate as I derived it from footage of repeatedly fighting Simin at Phase 2 and failing. Note that Simin must be in phase 2 in order for the invisibility to go into a one minute cooldown. Otherwise, she will go invisible at around 50% of health in phase 1.

4. The video “[DnT] vs. Simin, Arah Path 4” is possibly the closest to a perfect run using current technology and tactics. Note how Simin disappears for Phase 2 at 3:18. [DnT] beats Simin at 4:11, about eight to nine seconds shy of her disappearing again. It is perfectly possible to do this is two runs as long as you can beat the clock.

5. Another possibly important piece of information: Simin will ALWAYS turn invisible at the “o” of “of” in phase 1. Or to be very precise, the middle of the “O” and “f” of “of”. That is the 50% mark for phase 1.

6. Every little bit helps. The potions of undead slaying at the Arah vendor will help in the fight against her. You can mail people the potions so if the dungeon starter (who cannot exit the instance) or anyone lacks them, just buy some more at the vendor, return, and spread them around.

I hope that these cues would help people in the fight.

Sidenote, I have a theory that because the important cues in this fight are sound and hp-percentage based, people are confused by it. Most people look for visual cues like Kohler’s sword shining so may miss this out.
