To me it just seems like the game drops my target a lot for no reason. It happens the most in pvp fights against mesmers (blinking behind me?) and at world event fights against dragons when they fly up or otherwise mostly end up outside my camera (I might be melee). I don’t pick a different target either, it just clears. I’m using right clicks to position and aim, and left clicks to look at other directions for approaching enemies. Also seems to happen more with far away targets – I once stood checking keep wall hp for a treb user from max targeting distance and target cleared up every time I looked (turned camera) away from the wall.

I’m willing to learn a new keybinding for target clearing if needed, although I’m used to left clicking empty space. Left clicking another target still needs to pick them but click-hold-release never should, whether dragged or not. And right click should definitely never affect my target. I disable any double click to interact style thing too. Target should remain as long as they would be rendered to me (so until stealth or disappearing in the horizon) no matter where camera is panned.

I would give a lot to have the camera stick to my target, especially because I consider re-targeting to be a huge hassle in Guild Wars 2. The tabbing logic uses closest to nearest instead of left to right and doesn’t pick from a narrow front cone before widening to frontal arc like other games. Also the tab cycle reseting logic when people enter and exit your view doesn’t feel natural. It’s really hard to look at a view with moving targets and know how many times I need to hit tab to pick the one I want by the time it gets to him, or at least I haven’t intuitively learned it in over 1k playing hours. I’d probably put all of WoW, Rift, WAR and Allods ahead of GW2 as far as tab targeting functionality goes.

I lose fights due to people attacking my UI, not only via stealthing but by simply providing a lot of pet, minion and illusion targets to interfere with my targeting. Left click targeting alone is obviously undesireable or difficult in many situations.

What I’m surprised at is I think the craft -> crack with black lion kit -> recover jewel -> repeat loop has been in game all along. It made leveling Jewelry BY FAR the easiest craft to level since you could retrieve your blue mats by salvaging with a good kit rather than having to farm them every single time (unlike the salvage returns of any other craft). I doubt the snowflake jewel is the only way of looping this.

The Black Lion kits one would be using for these have a gold value via the gold —> gems transfer. Even if the gems were bought with real money, it’s only a different way of achieving gold from gems. What I believe most did was actually use master/mystic kits. They have a chance of losing the jewel 20% of the time which then needs to be replaced. The snowflake jewels had clearly lower replacement cost than normal jewels – until people caught on and price of snowflakes went up. We saw it climb to 23s I think which was probably around the break point relative to ecto price at that time. Which tells us that the cheap snowflakes before that left a hefty room for profit.

A LOT of people exploited this method over and over. Some have made several thousands of gold since Saturday. Ten thousands – if not hundred thousands – of gold have been created in no time without any effort. I hope that those exploiters will get punished.

You seem confused. No new gold has been created. No new gold has entered the economy. Ectos did, which lowered the price of ectos and thus made any gold you had worth more ectos. Gold changed hands but this just resulted in 15% TP taxes and gold EXITING the economy.

It really is Chri… Wintersday.

I’m skeptical, given that the last time one of the devs commented on the Fast Hands bug he was utterly wrong is describing how it actually worked.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if only part of it was fixed.

It was that exact comment describing the dev’s experience with the bug that made me chase down how it works because it was so different from mine. Turned out there was reasonable explanation resulting from what I assume is a difference in gameplay style as a warrior. The exact bug mechanics I found were by no means new, they had been tracked down before, but my new thread managed to actually explain things in a more helpful way and I got a private message mentioning it had aided to reproduce the bug better in internal testing.

Still patching but I’m really hopeful that it could actually be fixed for good. Or if the fix itself is buggy then they’ll know how to fix that soonish hehe. This has been the single bigger personal enjoyment-draining issue that I run into while playing, basically. ~giddy~

Gotta say I’m a bit doubtful about the NPC commander thingy beforehand. AI will matter a lot. More importantly it could create a situation where most people are telling everyone to not take the last enemy tower (because it’ll spawn this event) yet a small group is sieging it regardless of the yelling. Meanwhile enemies are letting them taking it and waiting in their base for commander+dolyak.

The supply from spawn sounds good though. Perhaps the special dolyak is all that needs to be spawned, permanently or temporarily. Note though that zergs will fetch unlimited supply from these dolyaks – even from other maps – so that needs to be kept in mind while balancing.

I can’t wait for that day when Anet will introduce duels. It will be really great to see warrior vs guardian fights. Who do you think will win?

The better player will win consistently more if they keep dueling, as it should be…

Besides that, I think the duel terrain will heavily affect this. With an offensive and mobility based warrior spec I have pretty good chances to beat all guardian builds 1v1 in the open WvW but suffer much more in the cramped surroundings of sPvP and some puzzle spots. If you add a goal based feature like a small capture point then I give advantage to the guardian due to their better area control.

Keybinding Help

Compared to many games, I actually want to have a backwards button in GW2.

The mouse buttons are usually some of the most important keybindings that I need to use immediately, on demand. I experimented with many different setups in beta. Best choices I think were the ones that I want to press simultaneously with movement keys on my keyboard. Dodge on mouse 4 and skill 1 on mouse 3 are what I started with. Later I changed skill 1 to space and jump to mouse 3 and I’ve been really happy with it – thumbing space is also convenient while moving in any direction. Mouse 5 has been weapon swap but that could’ve been on Q or something.

Looking at my setups in other games, I could also use scroll_down or modifier+scroll for stun breaker for example. Haven’t bothered since GW2 doesn’t support that binding naturally.

You’re doing somthing wrong then. As a glass cannon Shortbow ranger my pet often don’t reach my target before it’s dead. A shortbow build with Power/Precision/Crit can easily give you 60% critchance – Combine this with bleed on crit and you have some solid damage.

This said, I don’t think ranger reaches the highest dps.

Do you have faith in reaching the highest dps at 900+ range on your ranger, though? (Not sure if that ranger trait gives you 1200 shortbow.)

The effect of damage stats you can stack in this game is huge. On the other hand, the skill still needs to be decent for people who aren’t stacking all those glass cannon stats. Their crit multipliers are much smaller and base hits are lower in the first place. Even the glass cannon guy who was shooting here would’ve done only 5k if it didn’t crit. That’s less than double the typical (glass cannon statted) ranged skill 1 in the same time plus extra downsides from the burst skill.

If original poster had 500 more toughness, that would’ve been 10k. Still really big but he could’ve retreated to safety easily in that position. Toughness as full secondary stat gives about 900. A typical guardian running around in Knight’s gear and with protection would’ve only taken 2-4k – if it didn’t get blocked.

What I’m trying to say is that there’s a really wide scale of potential damage here that they have to balance for. From both attacker’s and defender’s stats and effects. And a defensive guy – with only power or condi as secondary stat – should still be able to slowly kill another defensive guy. To avoid stupid bunker situations.

So it’s quite possible that people will never stop being alarmed about damage numbers in this combat system. In the end it’s a game of active defenses. The burst skill has increased weakness to interrupts, blind, block, evade and so on, and self-rooting is more hurtful than in other games in the first place. I think arguing that culling needs fixing if opponent was really within attack range and not visible would be more successful.

Why so many glass warriors in dungeons?

in Warrior

Ksielvin.1587

Why so many glass warriors in dungeons?

This is related to an issue that many modern MMOs have: the solo-viable leveling gameplay doesn’t teach players to tackle group content.

There is no reward for using anything other than glass cannon builds while leveling up, only added inconvenience if following a different personal preference. Only Orr and the karka begin to teach caution and leaving a wider margin for error by increasing the amount of time you’re not in control of the fights though I don’t really like how it’s done. Mostly though PvE players have to learn “dungeon only gameplay” and those who are not dedicated to dungeoneering will be reluctant to develop separate “dungeon only” gear or builds.

I’ve felt that WvW focused gameplay transferred well into dungeons, on the other hand. In my case I have a glass cannon~ish trait setup with a heavy dose of secondary defensive stats. This buys time to stay and be effective in melee combat, but a secondary plan for contributing from range – or quickly cycling back into melee after retreat and recovery – is also necessary.

So, simply put, people are trying to be glass cannons because it worked for them in the past. And for some it can work in dungeons too depending on circumstances but for many pick-up groupers it won’t.

Well even though this is my opinion I would say that it is not really silly. Read up on what other’s are saying, the warrior is relatively balanced. Yes like every profession there are some bugs, but hopefully they will be looked at. Try playing a ranger and have half of your ranged shots “obstructed” there are few things more frustrating.

Warriors are balanced, that’s what I was saying too. The public opinion I referred to was how this is used as some sort of counter argument when bug fixes are desired. Separate things.

The obstructed shots are not a ranger bug but an issue with projectile mechanics in the game. Warriors have very few ranged abilities that are not projectile based and we see this as well. It’s the main thing stopping Bolas from being popular I think, and besides both ranged weapons also happens with ranged slow gap closers on melee weapons. Shortening the distance and making sure the terrain is completely flat if not actually concave helps of course but reduces the useful situations for these skills. No need for any particular profession to feel insulted here though, even casters have many projectiles.

Ksielvin.1587

Thanks for the insight on this, i gave up on Fast Hands because of this bug and wondered why it behaved like it does now. Lets hope for a fix, even though ANet seems to neglect Warrior…

Don’t give up on the trait, it feels so good when it works that I still kept using it. For example when facing someone who’s better at controlling the range combat happens at than we are, you can swap to melee or ranged weapon without much worry. With 10 second cooldown you have to be more careful about being tricked into swap then left with sub-optimal weapon right afterwards.

Thanks for the great summary. You should copy your post to the sticky bug thread, so I dont get lost!

I edited a link into my recent related post. Cogbyrn had already posted these bug mechanics there afterwards. This thread is meant to focus on living with the bug and coping with it. We have no idea whether a fix might come or not.

Warrior changes in 15th Nov patch.

in Warrior

Posted by: Ksielvin.1587

Ksielvin.1587

You obviously haven’t properly looked through other profession patch notes to see where their all at because comparatively warriors are in a good spot right now, they really are.

I had hoped to just ignore silly public opinion but as it seems dev resources are scarce and affected by words repeated enough times, here goes.

Balance-wise, I’m fine with warriors as they are. PvE leveling could maybe use a nerf but who cares about that. Spvp has issues but those aren’t really warrior issues as such, just the spvp in general has been in bad state (bunkers) and thieves too good at filling mobility/burst role comparatively. WvW is fine.

Bug-wise, warriors aren’t better off than many of the others. Our popular builds avoid bugs where they can, same as others. With a special case like necros, I’ll suggest fixing 3 necro bugs for every warrior one. But in the end of the day, we need our stuff fixed too.

Fast Hands bug: details and working around it

in Warrior

Posted by: Ksielvin.1587

Ksielvin.1587

Fast Hands minor trait, 15 points in Discipline:

Weapon-swapping recharges 5 seconds faster.

Fast Hands is one of very few unique warrior mechanics and gives you some of that weaponmaster feeling we’re supposed to have. It can be useful in nearly any build and makes playing around with your weapon sets feel much more smooth – when it’s working properly. Sadly it’s bugged, often triggering the full length cooldown instead. This thread is about documenting how exactly the bug happens and how to work around it as much as possible.

BUG DETAILS

Normal weapon swap cooldown is 1 second out of combat and 10 seconds in combat. You’re in combat after successfully hitting or being hit by something. This is indicated by a yellow glow around your skillbar and being slowed to moving at combat speed. You get out of combat by slaying your foes, getting far enough from them or waiting a long time without refreshing combat mode via new hits. With Fast Hands, the in-combat weapon swap is supposed to trigger a 5 second cooldown instead. (A further -1 second is available via Superior Runes of the Warrior but I haven’t checked if they stack.)

For a long time, I thought Fast Hands would basically bug out for every first weapon swap in a fight. I knew this wasn’t strictly true since it wasn’t quite consistent but for my use cases it was mostly true. But recently Jon Peters (GW2 Game Designer) posted this:

Fast hands only is broken on the very first swap after you turn it on our load a map. After that it works. Fixing that first time bug is extraordinarily difficult, but we think it is worth it to keep the trait.

He described the bug as much less severe than I had thought. How could this be? I figured out that some difference in playing habits caused this vast gap in how we experienced the bug.

After some testing, here are the exact details:

  • After speccing into the trait or loading into another map, first in-combat swap will cause a 10 second cooldown. This seems unavoidable. Further swaps in that fight are only 5 seconds.
  • If you exit combat and start another one without swapping weapons in between, you can keep the 5 second cooldown on swapping.
  • If you swap weapons outside combat, the first time you will trigger 5 second cooldown instead of 1 second. Further out-of-combat swaps will be 1 second but damage has already been done because…
  • After swapping weapons outside combat, next in-combat swap will again give you 10 second cooldown before returning to 5 second swaps as above.

To minimize the effects of the bug, you must never swap weapon sets outside combat.

Jon Peters likely uses a setup with 2 melee or 2 ranged weapon sets. The sets serve a similar purpose or perhaps have offensive/defensive or fight/utility split where he isn’t overly concerned which one he starts the next fight with – or he nearly always ends a fight with the preferred one.

I on the other hand use melee/ranged and fight/mobility splits, mainly in the highly variable WvW environment. I want to access the mobility weapons outside combat yet often start a fight with something else. I cannot predict what I want to do in next fight when I’m ending the previous one but right before a fight starts I usually see it coming and swap weapons to adjust to the situation. As such, I have nearly always been triggering the 10 second cooldown during the next fight.

BAGSWAPPING

Bagswapping is the act of swapping weapons from your bags (aka inventory) while outside combat. You can bagswap to a warhorn and back about every 20 seconds to access the swiftness cooldown for example. I consider this to be a common routine in experienced warrior gameplay.

Bagswapping does not trigger the Fast Hands bug. You can keep the 5 second swaps in next combat while using it. You will run a risk of being caught in combat with wrong weapons out but that is mitigated via situational awareness. Bagswapping for mobility can allow you to run weapon sets where you care less about what you engage with and may only lack in-combat gap closers and creators.

In cases where your mobility and engaging weapons differ, you should strive to end fights with your engaging weapons while having duplicates of the mobility weapons in your inventory. You can then bagswap to them without triggering the Fast Hands bug. So in case of using greatsword/rifle I would try to end fights with the rifle in my hands and use a second greatsword from my bags to access skills 3 and 5 outside combat.

Yes this is a lot of trouble. We can only hope the bug eventually gets fixed. Meanwhile, this thread may help people avoid some issues with it. Any other workaround ideas are welcome.

'Vision of the Mists' not Ascendant?

I know, right? Before this stuff I had a personal goal of getting Volcanus. Now, it would be a crazy purchase because it takes a significant chunk of the effort one could put towards a legendary weapon and legendaries get improved when ascended weapons arrive whereas Volcanus doesn’t. Nevermind that Mjolnir takes equal or more resources compared to legendaries even.

Getting the ascended stats to transmute on the Volcanus could be all sorts of unreasonable when the time comes. Already WvW badges were unviable for collecting all my exotics (About 10 to 1 or worse ratio of effort compared to dungeon stuff. The money/karma items I would also consider “WvW obtainable” though there are extra loops to jumps through.) and now best-in-slot items are being added exclusively via dungeons yet allowed to make you stronger in other content. This is what they’re doing, not saying. Legendary weapon could be the only thing saving me from choosing between ridiculous effort put into content I don’t enjoy or having to wait months and months to collect some new nearly worthless loot token type in other content.

That’s for one weapon. Nevermind my budding collection or different gear sets for different builds that I was happily putting together thinking that Exotics were the stat cap.

My worry about this reached a new level after finding out ascended weapons will have higher Weapon Strength (big power creep) and infusions (which they said they will be adding more powerful versions of) will raise their non-dungeon stats too.

I never understood why a MMO isnt automatically rated M. They cant control what people are going to say ingame, even with in game filters. There for its unfit for small children whos parents dont want them exposed to profanity.

They don’t want you cursing and cussing the air blue. It’s a standard of behavior and manners, not age or maturity.
