There are guilds recruiting now that, half the time, I don’t even know who or what they’re recruiting. I saw a guild recruitment in map chat several weeks ago that referred to “muggles.” Tonight there was a guild recruiting in Mount Maelstrom targeting “the international transfeminist transpiracy” and referred to “gross cis people.” I looked all that up out curiousity. I wasn’t surprised by any of what I read. So, yeah I’d say a hetero guild would be fine. Personally, I think it’s getting out of hand.

I’ve always kind of optimistically considered that second one satirical, but at the same time I’m not willing to find out because so often what I think is satire turns out to be genuine.

Was this topic supposed to be controversial or something?

Personally I’d like to see this happen just because now I’m curious if the OP could think of anything such a guild would do. Can she be more pro-heterosexual than basically any other guild in existence without resorting to being anti- something else? Tune in next time as OP tackles being completely normal in a world full of people who don’t care…

Social progress is not all it’s cracked up to be. For example, the communist revolution in Russia was seen as social progress by it’s adherents. Millions of Russian citizens were killed by their own government. How’s that for social progress?

I, too, can apply terms used for one thing to other completely unrelated things and pretend that this casts doubt on them in some way. Of course, seeing as it doesn’t, probably not worthwhile eh?

Just because you are intolerant Magicus,

If their point of view is just as valid as yours, why are they the intolerant one? Just wondering.

I think you’ll find that to most people, an accusation of ‘intolerance’ refers to intolerance without reasonable justification rather than just generally not tolerating something. For instance you likely don’t often come across accusations of being ‘intolerant’ of, say, murder or theft. In a very literal sense a lot of people are intolerant of those, but few would think they deserve a great deal of tolerance in the first place and thus accusing someone of being intolerant of them would get you little more than shrugs and funny looks.

Marriage equality as a term is about as accurate and meaningful as climate change. The left realized global warming was a loser, so they had to change it…except that the climate always changes and has historically been both warmer and colder before man came on the scene.

This right here pretty much invalidates anything else you’re saying in my eyes

Moreso than ‘moral and biological imperatives’?

Still, I have to agree with the last part:

No one has a right to not be offended.

This is exactly how I feel whenever I see people flailing impotently about some bit of social progress they’ve been unable to stop or undo as though this time, finally, it’s really gone too far!

I agree Anet has a right to post what they want. The op has a right to disagree with them doing it. The forums are partially to let anet know what you feel they are doing right and what they are doing wrong. Anet then decides whether they want to do something about it…… All the hate, insults, and abuse heaped on OP by all of the "openminded " posters just make me laugh

And all these other players are letting a-net (and the OP) know how they feel about it. So essentially everything here is working as intended.

Why is openminded in quotation marks?

OP only asked that ANET not try to represent the entire player base by posting political statements since the entire player base doesn’t agree

You’re talking about a business, not some group that players have elected as representatives. It doesn’t matter if they have a position on something that contradicts how you, the OP, or anyone else feels. They can do that. If you don’t like it, all you can do about it is not buy things from them—but they’re obviously not worried about that.

That Endless Common Clothing Tonic is annoying as it only lasts 15 minutes and you can’t change how it looks. It’s always this same red and black clothes. I would much prefer if we had access to civilian NPC clothing as Outfits.

I’ve always wondered why they didn’t do that. Seems like an outfit would solve the same problems as the tonic while being much more convenient to use. Maybe they just don’t want to give us a free outfit, even if it isn’t anything special…

There’s not much point rezzing in a city (outside of puzzles). That said, a lot of times people can die in such a way that where their body appears to be is not where you need to be standing in order to revive them. Sometimes those two places are far enough away that you cannot stand within range of the correct place to revive them and still be able to interact with their body to begin rezzing. So it’s possible that even if people did see you they might not have been able to do anything about it.

All pve can be solved, therefore no pve can be challenging. You just follow the solution and you win.

Math problems can be solved, too. Doesn’t mean there aren’t challenging math problems.

That’s actually a pretty good comparison because both generally only need ‘solving’ when you first encounter them or something changes. Dungeons also seemed more challenging when the game first released, before everyone began to memorize what worked and just repeat it. So did Tequatl when it changed, but now all I have to do is show up early enough to avoid the ‘special’ maps (and hope not to crash) and it’s basically a sure thing.

It’s a big part of why so much content in this game gets boring so quickly.

No racial elite toolbelt skills?

in Engineer

Posted by: LameFox.6349

LameFox.6349

I realize these are things that are very rarely worth using anyway, but I find it kind of disappointing they’ve not even bothered to add some simple toolbelt skills to them. This is a thing that has been done in the past with the other racial skills, so that an engineer who equips these can at least do something with that toolbelt slot even if it isn’t necessarily very useful. But when I checked my engineer after the patch to see what they’d come up with… just a blank box.

Are these coming later, perhaps, and just weren’t important enough to make this patch? Or are they as dead as water combat and removing them just more trouble than it’s worth? Even a ‘press here for your bolt of lightning’ button would be better than nothing, if still vaguely sad.

From what I can figure out none of my characters aims directly for the bulls-eye of the green circles, they are all a bit off in one direction or another and to different amounts. This has gone from being a fun game of finding them to me the frustration of being able to see it but not being able to get the target just right.

Yeah, that’s why I gave up on trying to time it. The bullet never goes to the centre anyway; it seems to change every time I move my character as well.

That said, I’m unsure if the bullet graphic is actually related to hitting the target.

LameFox.6349

This isn’t new by any means, but I was finally inspired to post about it because I missed a good chunk of the LA intro cinematic.

I have the game on an SSD, so it loads pretty quickly by GW2 standards. One thing I’ve noticed since I did this some years ago, is that I can often hear things happening for quite a while before the load screen disappears and lets me see them happening. Not just ambient noise, but things actually going on around me (like players using skills to get around in a city).

Today I loaded into LA for the first time since the patch, and I heard the cinematic starting. Later I looked it up on youtube and found I missed 16 seconds of it staring at a loadscreen.

Minimise competition in relation to loot drops and resource node, not competition completely. Every item I get that another player cannot at a later point is another “point” so to speak for my account regardless of its acquisition method. It’s another addition of value to my account.

I guess I’m just not sure how you can consider that competition. The scarcity of the rewards could, assuming they’re not random drops, speak to the skill required to obtain them while the activity is available, but only then. Unless someone has the chance to try to get something I have, I can’t compare our abilities by whether or not they have it. They could be a much better player than I am in every way imaginable, but it wouldn’t matter, because skill no longer dictates whether it’s possible. I was lucky enough to be there, and they weren’t.

I mean I get being happy about it, but it’s in the same way I’d be happy about winning the lottery.

LameFox.6349

What no? why do you assume it’s preventing the other person completing the task
It’s doing difficult achievements that others couldn’t I.E their skills or abilities were no good enough, not physically preventing them except in the case of direct races , getting rare/prestige items like liandri, luminescent etc.
I was just saying that exclusives are a part of that in getting an item another person couldn’t , in Guildwars currently since there’s so few high end pieces of content it’s usually about volume rather than actual quality though. Like getting more AP for some people, more skins, more titles etc.

I don’t think it’s preventing other people from completing the task. You said that you treat it as a competition, which ‘[you] feel is in line with MMO/gaming in general’, and I was pointing out that GW2 features a lot of design choices that intentionally minimize competition. In addition to that, those few things that are genuinely rare in this game are almost entirely kept that way not by being difficult to acquire, but by being unlikely to drop or downright impossible to acquire. So even when you get one, it doesn’t really say a lot about you. With a few exceptions (speed runs, gauntlet before it was murdered, etc.) it strikes me as a very strange game to attempt to compete in, because what one player achieves is largely a personal accomplishment that is irrelevant to everyone else.

Also on an unrelated note I’m pretty sure Luminescent skins are rare because they take a perfectly good set of armour and make it ugly. >__>

Exclusive items should stay exclusive.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

LameFox.6349

I think this is where the difference between pro-exclusivity and anti-exclusivity comes in.
I treat the game as a competition (which I feel is in line with MMO/gaming in general), I don’t want to equal to everyone I want to beat them, have more , do more, be more.

I’ll also be the one to say it, if everyone looks awesome , no one looks awesome.
I also worry about your definition of rarity, while you don’t say it I believe you’re defining it as “they have to put some work in and then they get it” not "only a very small % of the player base gets the item (I,E actual rarity/scarcity)

That doesn’t even make sense in this game. Who are you competing against? You can’t take loot from someone else, you can’t stop them from getting an achievement by getting there first. Getting an item by happening to be around during the time it was available certainly isn’t competitive. Do you just farm a lot and buy things off the TP so you can feel like you beat someone to it?

I’m with the OP on this 1. I have items I got when GW2 launched and also couple things from first Halloween I think should stay exclusive. You weren’t there???? Oh well, sorry.
I was angry when GW1 started letting post 05-06 players start getting the hats etc. Or couple other games letting new comers get skins that others had to grind on for couple months to get (because it was the only way to get it). There’s pride in most exclusive items you get because you yourself actually accomplished what was needed to achieve it. Yes I am an elitist no shame there.

During the first halloween my brother and I were doing MK runs almost non-stop until they removed it. I got arachnophobia, he got two of them, plenty of other people I saw doing it consistently had nothing to show for it in the end. During MF he also got a jetpack, I didn’t. We were running it together in the same groups.

That has nothing to do with being ‘elite’. It’s just the sheer dumb luck to have been present and breathing at the right time, and the further dumb luck to get something out of RNG. If items are going to be exclusive for any reason, it should be the effort put into getting them, not because chance allowed a few people who got lucky to think they did anything special.

Problem:
After working normally for a time, during which I have used and picked up several rocket turrets, the turret will begin to stop firing after I have used Explosive Rockets. When first deployed it fires, but when Explosive Rockets is activated it will fire once and then not fire again, even after Explosive Rockets has come off c/d (and including if I use Explosive Rockets again).

Re-slotting the turret when OOC seems to be a temporary solution. Another time, I found it eventually just fixed itself.

This seems to be specific to the rocket turret, as I’ve been using flame turret simultaneously without this problem occurring.

TBH I consider standard player models a band-aid fix for what turned out to be a worse design choice than they originally expected. Different player races and various armour/weapon skins are not inherently incompatible with the ability to see what is happening, if they avoid excess. Which is exactly why I would like them to avoid excess. I don’t want to have to make the game ugly to be able to play it in the way it was designed, especially not for the sake of things that don’t really add much in the first place.

Unique Profession Dodge Effects.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

LameFox.6349

It’s actually ANet’s intention for you to pay attention to effects such as that. Their whole gameplay style is based on not looking at UI, but instead, the players/mobs around you. So it’s actually reinforcing that very principle.

Saturating things with an excess of visual effects makes that harder, not easier. You would have them take one action and make it look like 9 different things even though the action itself is unchanged. Not only does that mean more animations for players to learn in order to know what is going on when a single one would have been suitable, but it adds to the ridiculous number of other animations both meaningful and not meaningful (like armour/weapon skin effects) that are happening all the time.

If they want us to play by looking at mobs and other players, the last thing they should do is make it like looking out for certain needles in a stack of other needles.

Please no. In addition to making fighting players in PvP/WvW even less intuitive to get into than it is already (multiple different ways to show the exact same thing as well as having to learn which effect is a does-something-on-dodge trait that might actually matter, and which is just useless fluff), the last thing this game needs in general is more effects. Especially on a mundane thing like dodging.

As to fairweathering IMO thats mostly caused by the PPT system and duration of the matches.

I think a lot of it could also be improved by better map design. While it isn’t perfect, I’ve noticed that the maze-like nature of EOTM provides a lot more opportunities for small groups on an outmanned team to do things before the enemy arrives to flatten them.

On the older maps I would often see imbalanced matches turn to a team actually being unable to leave their invul zone until the overwhelming enemy blobs got bored of farming those few who tried. That sort of experience would invariably obliterate the population for the rest of that match, and I can’t really blame them for not wanting to show up for it. Being able to do something not-futile against larger enemies could certainly give people a reason to turn up in spite of the matches.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

LameFox.6349

Fast movement in this game is TERRIBLE with lag. My forward leap skills are always short. The ones that evade backward always rubber-band. The zephyrite #3 skill overshoots consistently and if there’s no room to aim far too short, I end up rolling off a cliff.

I once fell off the Zephyr Sanctum in the Labyrinthine Cliffs going after a vista, waypointed on the way down because it’s a really long fall, and then rubber-banded back from the waypoint to fall the rest of the way and need to WP again when I died.

I didn’t have this problem at release, even when I was playing on EU servers with higher ping, and it seemed to appear after some updates and stick around ever since. And interestingly, teleport skills don’t have the problem, aside from that one time I WP’d and I think even then it’s only because I was falling. I suspect at some point they changed the way the game keeps track of our movement or something, and it doesn’t like latency at all.

As much as people like to repeat ‘harden up’, ‘welcome to the internet’, et cetera, it’s not necessarily an inability to cope so much as not thinking that experiencing the gameplay is worth experiencing the gamers. If your form of entertainment turns out to be more unpleasant than entertaining, it’s become self-defeating and it makes no sense to continue.

Most likely the effect mistakenly isn’t being applied to the shorter cooldown version of that skill. I think there was a similar issue with a warrior skill some years ago.

If there was an issue with how fast the trait could apply vulnerability, consistency suggests they would give the trait itself a cooldown.
