Sanctum of Rall
(edited by Macovan.3650)
What is this build for? WvW? sPvP? PvE?
I don’t do much PvE and sPvP, but from the WvW perspective, this build seems lackluster. Conditions are a current meta in WvW roaming, and having a fast, reliable condi removal is the must. Your only condition removal is HiS which is usually not enough. Also, 1783 power and 171% crit damage is really low. You are going to hit like a wet noodle. I also feel, running 6 points into crit strikes (for Hidden Killer) is almost always necessary for dagger main hand. High toughness is only good against big hits, and your HP is still relatively low (14k), so the build is not really that tanky.
Even full Soldier thief build will have better survivability and damage output than your build. It isn’t the best build by any means, but as an example you can take something like this http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fZQQNAoYVlsMXmKd+O35scy7Z4E9z/5E7Ex2FBTcfeV2VOA-TRCBwA12f4oyvcq/A5BAA4UAoSfAjjAQCzfTUCSKA9UGB-e
And remember, a good player will do decent even with a terrible build, but only while using a good build, he will truly shine.

This is the build I run sometimes in WvW. Pretty much usual full dire p/d condition damage build (yes, it is a cheeser build, I know). It is probably the strongest and most annoying WvW thief build atm. Don’t worry too much about the alt weapon, it is not really needed for the most part. You should be able to fight the whole fight without switching weapons. I prefer to use Shortbow for some aoe bleed, poison field and Infiltrator’s arrow to flee from the fight when I have to. You could use also use D/D for the Death Blossom and Heartseaker (for the mobility, not damage). Other weapon sets are not worth using with P/D due to the lack of condition damage on them.
Sorry to say, but it is terribly bad build for WvW roaming, and probably for duels. It lacks reliable BS burst (no guaranteed crit from stealth), no condition removal at all. You are going to be a piece of cake for any half decent player running condi build. It is an absolute must to run some sort of reliable condi removal in WvW. Also, D/D is probably the weakest and hardest weapon set thief has. It lacks utility, and it is hard to land CnD on experienced player. Pretty much any other weapon set (except P/P and may be S/P) is superior for the roaming.
I’m saying this in all honesty:
Bad.
- TOO ZOOMED IN.
- More attempts to stealth while revealed is up than I can count.
- You are either key-turning or using your foot to hold the mouse.
- Breaking stealth with a stab and stomping after = bad.
- Target running away = Short-bow or Sword main-hand. Swinging the Dagger in thin air wont do anything.
- Infamous Heartseeker spamming (even worse because targets are usually over 50%hp)
- Stomping a Mesmer’s downed illusion – WOW JUST WOW LOL.There’s just too much badness in this video.
And for those who think it’s a “honest” video, think again. He shows only winning scenarios (those so-called highlights) apart from one where hes killed (after downing someone mind you!)The opponents were bad and so is the OP.
You have forgotten to add:
-Poor positioning (often face stabbing enemies instead of backstabbing, or backstabbing ranger pet instead of ranger).
-Poor CnD timing that leads to waste of initiative.
In addition, most of the footage is either fighting underleveled enemies or fighting while having a clear advantage in numbers. What can I say to author? You have a long, long way to improve.
Maybe i don’t want to waste a utility slot on DV, even running a venom share build i don’t take it in favor of IDV or SV to get the most out of leeching venom for the group, BV is also stun that works on most bosses or mobs the don’t normallly move. (Ever seen a stoned tentacle at jade maw? it funny and disturbing at the same time)
Well, may be you are right regarding pve, I don’t really know. I spend 90% of gaming time in WvW, so my judgement was based on that. In WvW I don’t want to waste my elite on BV because in many situations Thieves Guild and Dagger Storm are superior, and DV is better for CC, imo.
(edited by Macovan.3650)
Basilisk venom is inferior to the Devourer venom right now.
Detailed comparison:
CD – 45s(BV), 45s(DV). The same cd time.
Cast time – 1s(BV), instant(DV). DV is better than BV.
CC duration – 1.5s(BV), 2s(DV). DV is better than BV.
Number of applications – 1 hit(BV), 2 hits(DV). DV is better than BV.
Type of CC – Stun(BV), Immobilize(DV). BV is better than DV.
Conclusion: 3:1 in Devourer venom favor. The only thing Basilisk is better than Devourer is that it stuns the target instead of immobilizing it. I don’t know how can someone compare Basilisk venom to a Moa Morph if it is inferior even to the utility skill (Devourer venom).
They are working on fix. Not sure how long it will take though.
Anet team knows about the issue and is working on it. Unfortunately they don’t tell details.
You do know that these are entirely different issues as far as complexity goes, right? And that the team can work on more than one thing at once? It sucks. I get it. But this fix may take time.
Yes, I also know that the dye appearance problem is not a game breaking and minor, and bugged Hidden Killer trait is a major problem that breaks the game for many thief players, and therefore I think has to be the higher priority to fix. How much time do we have to wait? A month (until the next patch)? 2 month? Half a year (there are actually bugs that have been addressed since the beta, and still have not been fixed)? A year, may be? In order to make some people take action, you have to push on them and to be more active and demanding. If you just silently wait for an action to be done, there is a good chance those people will delay it for a good amount of time. That is how most things work in the life, may be some day you will understand.
My build is still useless without hidden killer, i cant even go enjoy the new WvW updates >.<
You can always switch a few traits around and use S/D, that’s what I did :P.
No one has to be forced to change their playstyle because of the broken trait. It is a problem that has to be fixed asap, and not to be left over in silence.
I can do it after patch, that means you can too.
I wounder if Anet even reads this, cause there have been no official reply on this yet. At least let us know if you are going to fix this soon.
It is bugged. Holly kitten, as always. With every patch anet manages to break something.
And his reward for being a glass canon?
Considering he did like, twice my HP bar in damage, playing in a full toughness build or full vitality build wouldn’t have save me. And I’m traited heavily in defensive stats, just using offensive armor/trinkets.
The last time I have fought a glass cannon warrior, he couldn’t even damage me for 1/2 of my life and he died pretty fast. I’m a full p/v/t, so go figure.
Last time I immobilized a warrior, he used Whirling Attack and downed me instantly XD I still prefer Basilisk Venom
That is your punishment for being a glass cannon.
Devourer Venom >> Basilisk Venom, enough said.
I think adding 1.5 seconds revealed debuff when leaving stealth without an attack would be much better solution than add 1 more second to the revealed debuff with the attack. It would at least prevent CnD chain permastealth.
Hey, great gameplay dude! Glad to see a mobile S/D thief, instead of another CnD spamming permastealth scrub. That is what I call a skill. Keep those videos coming!
op: “Oh my god, they are removing permastealth, how can I live after that? I will probably give up on thief sine I will not be able to use my ‘balanced’ thief build anymore. [cry]….” CnD→CnD→CnD→ and so on, you call it a “balance” or “skill”, I call it a broken mechanics. And anyone who rely on this deserve to be “hit to the groin”.
P.S. I’m a D/D thief myself, and I’m glad this broken mechanics will be fixed. CnD spamming noobs should get what they deserve.
Welcome to the club dude. Many people started having high lag spikes and disconnects due to Error 7, some time after January 10. Anet tech support, though, doesn’t want to admit that the problem is at their side.
I am having this problem for about 2 weeks now. Many people have been reporting it recently, especially after the Jan 10. Anet likes to say that the problems are on our end and not on their, constantly refusing to acknowledge that it isn’t true.
I’m playing a game since a late September, and never got that problem before. Recently, about 3 days ago I have started to get this error. For me it is so unpredictable, and it seems not to have a solid pattern. Sometimes I can play an hour or two without getting it, sometimes it happen after a minute after entering a game. I didn’t do anything to my computer before this error started to occur, so I guess the problem is not on my end. I also did everything suggested on that topic, but nothing works. It seems that the problem started after the wintersday patch for most people reporting it. So anet, please, fix it asap! The game is nearly unplayable right now.

I just get to the WvW today, first time after the patch and I was very disappointed. I have heard people were saying that rendering has become much worse after the last patch, but today I have witnessed it by myself. Before the patch I had this problem also in the big fights, but it took about 10 seconds for enemies to render. Today I have stood into invisible battle for about 15 minutes and no one has rendered, even allies. It is really something horrible. With every patch Anet is fixing something minor and breaking something major. Why? I’m not going to go to the WvW until this is fixed, which will probably take another week. Thanks Anet for the great week you gave us.
@Macovan.3650 Don’t let the door hit you….
Seems like the door has hit you to the head really hard at your not so distant childhood…
If there were such a thing like an equality of gear in WvW, why would the game even need levels and gear? If you can just go to WvW with lvl 1 character and have an equal gear than lvl 80 who spent his time, sweat and blood to get his level and gear, there would be no motivation for people to advance to lvl 80 and save badges, karma or money for the better gear, and therefore less reasons to play the game. And yes, you have a sPvP for equal gear and balance, I think it is pretty much enough.
Form what I know, you have to do about 2-3k damage on target (even if the target is in downed state) to get a credit for killing him and also for getting rewards. Professions that have a lot of AoE damage are getting more badges than melee professions simply because they hit more targets.
@Shadow Phage
I agree with mesmers being more dangerous. But the difference of course being a mesmer must be “well played” to be dangerous. Whereas any idiot can figure out a thief.
So, can you explain me why there are so many worthless lvl80 thieves in WvW that can’t do anything to anyone and just dying non-stop? I have played WvW for a long time and have seen a good thieves by myself only couple of times.
@Ruufio.1496 Tanky classes were always counters for squishy burst damage classes in pretty much every game. However, guardians are not op in any extent, they are countered easily with condition damage tanky P/D thieves.
Same here, I see ridiculously huge number of thieves in WvW, and hardly see a good ones among them.
Brome.7036, ele will not get nerfed because of a video. I would actually love to see a good ele in action.
aNet, doesn’t see the self root and the awful animation time on PW. Of course PW is great with haste, that’s undeniable. But then again, what isn’t?
What Anet sees is that you evade all attacks when doing PW, so it cancels out with the root and long animation.
Lie, you can shadowstep when you are knocked down, and you will actually be on feet after that.
Sorry op, but nothing to see here really. It is just another long build demonstration video. 3 people were killed (2 lowbies and 1 lvl80 ele, who was attacked by raptors), as well as countless number of raptors) You could have killed this poor ranger that followed you at the beginning of a video, but you haven’t done so. The phrase “You can’t take more than 1 person at the time”, is complete BS, if you can’t do so with your glass cannon build, it doesn’t mean other thieves can’t (go watch Wild Bill for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEWOGcU61ng). The video will be only somehow educational for lowbies and some starting WvWers, other than that 19:34 minutes wasted(
Simple solution for the insanely huge burst – delete Assassin’s signet and Haste from the game – problem solved.
@Jack Angelfoot.2697
100% agree with you. Haters always gonna hate. Whiners always gonna whine.
I think it should stay that way. Whoever owns the garrison is at huge advantage. They can put trebs that can reach the Bay’s walls on the cliff and safely destroy them. Now, imagine if arrow carts and ballistas couldn’t reach them, the only way to prevent enemies from safely destroying the Bay’s wall would be to capture Garrison. I think the side who owns Garrison shouldn’t have this big strategical advantage as trebs that can reach the Bay in the first place, well, at least there is a way to prevent it.
I think thief right now is a solid and balanced class. I’am a WvW player and I can definitely tell that about 90% of lvl80 thieves in WvW are just too bad. If this class is op, why those thieves hardly kill anyone, and just keep dying instantly? Thief, indeed, hits really hard in glass cannon build, but he has no survivability, and in most cases is easily countered. The only thing that I feel needs to be nerfed is Assassin’s Signet because it increases damage by too much. They should make it 25% damage increase with 30 seconds cd, like someone suggested in another topic.
@Macovan you never once posted anything until now? Why?
I’m not really a heavy forum user, but I had 24 posts before this last one that you was responding to. If you don’t see them when clicking on “Show all posts by user”, than you are blind. It is clearly not my first post.
We’re in 3rd place… just like NSP is in their bracket. The difference is that we never bragged about how awesome our organization and skills were.
I mean how is it working out for you guys?
Looking at the latest stats of AR vs DH vs FC your score is 3 times less than that of DH and it hasn’t even been 24 hours yet since the servers’ change. Yes, NSP is currently the 3rd place in NSP vs YB vs SoR but the scores are really close, and at the moment we are actually leading in captured points. There can be possible change in positions pretty soon.

Anvil Rock is getting smashed again? Seems like you are going for the lowest tier next week) What excuses will you make now? Darkheaven has hacked all your orbs, or they vastly outnumber you?
(edited by Macovan.3650)
Another reason to NERF this class..
Thief is so freaking op’ed.. Now we got 25k hits??!
ANet, fix this.. Nerf this freaking class..
I don’t know whether it is a sarcasm. But if it is not – “Shut up noob!”))
I think this will only give birth to more negative comments and topics on forums. For example, something like topics with the following titles: “Oh, ‘guy X’ I have killed you, piece of s**t, I’m better than you”, or “Oh, ‘guy Y’ you are a cheap-a*s cheter, please ban this noob” (‘guy X’ and ‘guy Y’ are being player names).
Getting a D/D or S/P build just to spam HS/PW is noobish. Players who spam HS/PW are no skill noobs, who don’t know what to do if their HS/PW was countered. If you are running D/D, learn how to land Backstabs, how to chain stealth with C&D, and when to use Dancing Dagger. You also can go to P/D with condition damage and survivability, as Calysto.7469 said, watch Wild Bill, he is really good at it.
To be fair, stealth is currently completely broken in WvW to the extent where I’ve been playing an alt ele rather than playing my thief main until its fixed.
Hard to kill an enemy who never renders, huh? In other games you’d have to hack to accomplish something similar.
I know what you are talking about. I have an old computer and a slow internet, so my rendering time is even worse than that for majority of people. Yet, I have fought many lvl80 thieves in WvW 1v1 and never lost a fight, even though most of them were using stealth at the same amount as I do. Also 90% of thieves playing WvW are complete noobs (sorry if I have offended someone for telling a truth). So, I think people should stop blaming only a rendering system, and start seeking problems in something else… You know what I’m talking about.
@HackerTeivospy.2031
Sorry, but going 5 points in acrobatics is not a solution. The problem is not that you can’t get to the target after a Shadowshot, but is that there is a root that makes you miss a dagger swing that is following a shot whenever your target is moving away from you. 5 points in acrobatics will not solve it.
I was wondering earlier….is the Angry Army Militia the overflow guild for the not so good players? I spank them 2v1 regularly with a 3 orb deficit.
Angry Army Militia has a small number of active WvW players, and majority of those WvW players are not lvl80 yet. Talking about quality, I have won a 1v5 fight against AR guys (didn’t pay attention to a guilds they were in) about 2 days ago, 2 of those were true lvl80. Don’t even know how many 1v2 and 1v3 fights I have won against AR players (there are too many to remember). But I’m not saying that AR players are inferior, just because those guys were. And yes, I am in Angry Army Militia.
I think legendary weapons don’t worth effort at all. First of all, they all look horrible and completely off. Secondly, their stats are not that much different from WvW weapons.
Just to compare:
Quip(Legendary pistol) damage 890-1044, 91 power, 65 toughness, 65 vitality. Costs a lot of stuff that you have to grind and collect for several months.
Invader’s pistol(WvW pistol) damage 876-1028, 90 power, 64 toughness, 64 vitality. Costs only 264 Badges of Honor.
So you basically need to punish yourself and collect so much stuff for the weapon that has only 16 more cap damage and +1 more to stats than the weapon that much easier to get.
Bump.
The problem with Shadowshot is still present, and I think it needs to be fixed. I personally see 2 solutions for this:
1. Remove the root while the swing animation goes, so you can actually move to the target for hit. It will add mobility.
2. Make it so the shot will immobilize the enemy for 1/4 seconds, so he will not run at the safe distance and you will not miss a dagger swing after you have closed the gap.
Shadowshot
The problem was reported several times, it roots you at the location of the target for swing animation for about1/4 second. This ability was created as a gap closer and suppose to be a great for chasing enemies. However, it misses the swing every time when you chase someone because at the moment you the character swings a dagger enemy is at unreachable distance. I see 2 solutions for that:
1. Remove the root while the swing animation goes, so you can actually move to the target for hit. It will add mobility.
2. Make it so the shot will immobilize the enemy for 1/4 seconds, so he will not run at the safe distance and you will not miss a dagger swing after you have closed the gap.
Good skill, very nice video. I wouldn’t go for this build personally because it doesn’t fit my play style. However, I have enjoyed watching your video dude, good job, once more. Keep up teaching those noobs a good lesson)
