Hi all! Played since BETA, I LOVE THIEF! If you don’t love thief, you aren’t thiefing. This is a thief appreciate thread.
Things I love about thief
1 – Mobility
2 – Damage
3 – Initiative instead of skill CDs
4 – Stealth
5 – Mobility
Thanks! I have played every other profession minus Engi and I love thief the most – always. See you in game maybe!
I firmly believe the new maps and changes have created overlooked pathing errors
I hate mobas with no dodge mechanics in this diablo-style aerial view. I’ll stick to this, thank you. But i’m sure they’re very fun games.
Bad Players accuse me of hacking all of the time. One guy sent a video recording to ANET. I’m still here. Look into mobility combos. Shadowstep + Sword port to enemy can cover A LOT of ground. Shadow Trap + Shadow Step + Sword port as well. Heart Seeker + Shadowstep mid air covers an excess of area as well. So does Bow 5 + Shadowstep or anything like this. A LOT of people don’t realize how mobile thieves really are if utilized correctly. Don’t forget Heartseeker + Steal, Shadow Step + Steal, anything.
It’s definitely not new, but recently a lot worse since the map changes. Like extremely awful, where line of sight is obvious but it still does not work. Also … the Hotm Arena…ugh
PvP Is super active, plus they JUST changed the map so.. I mean you can just play arena while you wait in a free for all frenzy. Condi thieves are annoying as heck, but from what I’ve experienced, P/D SB power is still the go to. I say that because from what I’ve seen condi thieves wreck in fights, but fail in decaps and mobility and escapes. Just my experience though. More rewards in PvP now too which is wonderful. Don’t be discourage if you get insta-whacked a few times in the beginning. The play-style for thieves right now is very sensitive
Just created one, what a ridiculous oversight. LOL
Vault is 6 initiative, shouldn’t the passive reflect the proper amount of initiative spent?
Condis Kill Us
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
It looks like you are in the Vault in LA. Have you tried going to a different BLTC NPC? I’ve noticed not all the NPCs in the Vault offer the same services.
Good luck.
Thank you! I just went into EBG and was able to pick it up.. So is this a bug or working as intended? I was using the Black Lion Merchants in LA
I’m not trying to be insulting here, but are you standing at a TP NPC? You can’t pick up anything from the TP without going to one of the TP NPCs.
It’s ok haha, Yes I was basically having intercourse with the NPC I was so close.
Title says it all. I just burned like 47g on materials and this happened. They’re sitting there, but the Take All box is greyed out.
Sweet idea =) I’d personally love to see some sort of monk/friar/acrobatic-like elite spec where thieves use staves as martial weapons. I think it could be cool, but I’m probably alone on that one
I dislike thiefs because of two things
1. Ricochet was taken away as i loved playing double pistol thief it was straight nerf to my fun and enjoyment of the entire profession
2. I suck at pvp so encountering something that can oneshot me just kills the fun for me and thief is the most annoying for me as most of the times they just faceroll me before i even see them.
Respectable. I’m just so tired of hearing Thief is not worth playing solely because of the Ricochet nerf. But I understand, if it was your bread and butter. I’ve never had a thief 1 shot me as a thief, but my pvp build isn’t glass, it’s more s/d with acro and endo upkeep / stunbreakers.
Just keep in mind that Thieves will only stealth when they get near the combat.
They’ll also only ever really jump you with Basilisk venom, which is why it’s crucial to know
a) where they are on the field or how close to a pivotal fight they are and
b) when they disappear, because you HAVE to have your stunbreaker ready for that initial first hit. Steal breaks stun, so does inf signet. Easiest thing to do is lay a target on them and watch for it to disappear.
Pop one of your stun breakers after the first initial burst and then dodge and fight. D/P thieves are nasty though for sure, they can just re-stealth after you pop that stuff, so you’ve gotta
- stay mobile or stealth when they do or negate their stealth by using
basilisk venom before they even jump you (so that when you use your stun breaker, you whack them and then lay into them. They’re way too squishy as D/P to generally survive those few seconds they are stunned… and most don’t utilize stun-breakers in their build.)
If you’re glass cannon yourself, it’s honestly whoever lands the first hit.
Edit: This is coming from a Thief vs. Thief scenario, but some of this info can definitely help others on other professions.
The only reason I’d buy HoT anyway is for the extra Character slots. I mean other than that all I really do is PvP and they’re not bringing much to the table for that kind of money..
If you can’t handle the heat STAY OUT OF DA FIRE, Thieves are great and tons of fun but demand time put into them if you want your opponent to cry about your thief on the forums.
Ele is so easy it’s almost a joke. After making the hard switch from my Thief I can just bunk anything to death, it’s pretty hilarious
Do what you want man, don’t let others keep you from having fun. I love thief, even in this state I have fun!
I struggle with Eles the most out of anything. At least the profs that can kill you in two shots can die in that many as well.
This uhh… I mean I’d be cool with it if I knew that it wouldn’t be bugged and stupid when it releases, and well after its release…
Doge: Much balanced many wow
LOL, o my god. How?!
Just realized some people who purely play spvp may not be familiar with skill lag. Skill lag is different from fps lag, skill lag is most commonly identified as when you press a skill (yes even insta cast skills) and the icon begins flashing but nothing happens till a few moments or seconds later.
You can normally continue to move your character around freely when this happens, in wvw it can get so bad that two zergs run through each other and nothing happens because noones skills are working apart from auto attack or everyone scatters because they can’t activate their heal skill.
Yeah that’s specifically what I’m getting, but it almost has never happened to me in PvP before
This entire guild represents what is currently wrong with the thief community. Banding together so you can 1 hit backstab people in WvW and Pvp. Its plain bug abuse.
I will be reporting this thread.
Looks like a merry band of Thieves stole your common sense! Make like a tree
It’s because it applies the condition before removing the boon now. That’s why you get the immune sign, its because it applies the fear then removes the stab.
So is it working as intended or was this change lack of foresight?
No was probably an accident in the coding, I said it hoping to show them what to look for to speed things up. Btw I guess I should say I haven’t tested this in controlled conditions myself yet, I’m just relaying the info from what’s been talked about in the necro forums the past few days.
Ahh , ok thanks

I know this would take away from people being together in HoTM, and there is probably a reason it isn’t already a thing, but I’d really like to be able to queue up from outside of HoTM so I can spend more time on my map completion inbetween battles.
yes the dmg was buffed but with vigor nerfed it became a death sentence, every one prefers to play with blinds now since it is safer than dodges.
You can’t blind aoe damage, and energy signet works fine to make up for the vigor loss in my opinion. Plus Dagger ability 5 works fine for stealth, just need to practice utilizing it
Armor matters though, don’t run around nekkid
from a pure pvp point of view, not wvw or anything…. after playing s/d for several days pretty intensely… I actually like it… a lot. More than d/p.
I still think d/p is better…. however, S/D still has a place. It is far superior to d/p in terms of mobility…. FAR superior. A lot more than before the patch. +1 a fight is easier doing than d/p MORE than it was before.
So, while mose teams will run d/p, i still think s/d has a place right now. I actually think it needs no change whatsoever.
That being said, other classes need to be toned down with their damage and/or cc/survivability… mesmer and ele especially. Warrior rampage on 120 sec is stupid.. it should be 180 at least, if not 240 sec. Engineer nades need fixing….
Necro minon master needs looking at, but it has some hard counters…
Burning damage needs fixing….
Thank you. S/D is viable, but in a different sense than D/P! People are tunnel visioning D/P because they don’t want to try things out of their comfort zone.
I’m so angry that all of my hard earned dollars are going into my monthly subscription for this game. Man, if only I could leave the game and come back whenever I want instead of complain on the boards all of the time, without a monthly subscription.
Nah SD is fine, get gud
hard to get gud when you got scrubs that only know the 1 & 2 buttons.
Guess what scrubby doo’s, theres 3..4.5.6
Scrubby doo LOL
Nah SD is fine, get gud
Oh wow, did you just call me a srub? yup you did
wanna duel my thief, friend? let’s see whos the real scrub
Scrub a dub dub scrubby mcscrubberson.
This was some nice, humorous relief. I’ve been feeling pretty down every time I visit the “forums” for the “community”. This place is giving me PTSD it’s so bad. I’m just going to stop coming here for anything positive or slightly constructive, because no, broken threads aren’t constructive when there’s twelve of them and nobody can articulate their problems without some slight bias.
All I’m reading is that I should get drunk one night and make a 5 man engi group focused of nade barrage, just for laughs
This topic has been brought up before.
I was watching some old streams of the PvP World Tournaments. As an experiment I brought my fiance in (who is an avid gamer who plays Smite and Couterstrike religiously) to spectate the game.
She has never watched a Gw2 game before and her synopsis was complete confusion. She complained about the particle effects obscuring all of the animations. Majority of people were using Asura characters so her comment was it looked like a “Chibi Smurf War.”
At one point, a Shoutbow warrior landed a final thrust and dropped a guy. She was like WTF just happened? The animation for the burst was so obscure she couldn’t figure out what was going on and why the guy died.
After about 10 minutes she got bored and wandered off to do something else. I wonder, how many other people watch tournaments and feel this way? How many are met with confusion and view the game as unappealing from a spectator standpoint because they can’t figure out what’s going on?
She complained to me that all she saw was “A kaleidoscope of disco lights spewing from every player and a ton of boring numbers popping up.” She couldn’t telegraph big hits or even figure out what people were doing. She seemed surprised when people died and kept asking me “How did that guy go down?”
Just something to take into account of how the game might look to a first timer from a spectator perspective. She never really got excited. It made me realize that the way the game is presented to outsiders and it’s not good.
My brother was the SAME way, because WoW’s moves and particle effects are so clear and easy to understand what’s going on. Then he played PvP for a little and is hooked. It’s really just a matter of learning a game’s graphic styles
Video wasnt bad at all, and you did well.
Can you post build any chance? Its hard to say s/d is viable or not…
We dont know if how well the players you were fighting were, if you or they were a premade. You could be getting lucky with good team member and bad opponents.
I have tried s/d many build since tuesday, And it just doesnt come close to d/p.
I want s/d to be good again back when you could strip 2 boons and put eles in their place. (I am a huge Artemis Entreri fan why i want s/d to work)
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Thief_-_Sword/Dagger
Faced a few premades last night, won em all. This build is more group friendly, but 1v1s can sometimes be a struggle. I don’t know if this is what they used, but I’m enjoying S/D myself. Energy signet, Vigor, Withdraw, Sword/Bow evades, inf. sig. stunbreaker, if you work on your reaction time, you can’t be touched. You’re also giving your allies a higher chance of avoiding nasty attacks if you watch their evades and time your signet uses right. Boon ripping, evades, endo upkeep, peeling is all the name of the game with this build I’d say.
Love all the QQ about this patch. I picked up theif upon returning and can absolutely dominate in PvP after two days of learning how to fight other classes intelligently. I sincerely don’t get all of this complaining, adapt to the patch – this isn’t the end of the world.
With you on this one, +1 – all the bads should pick up engi and nade spam
I’m having no trouble with S/D, guess I’m weird.
I prefer the new system because:
“Improvisation: One random skill category is immediately recharged when you steal. You can use stolen items twice.”
I don’t want to HAVE to use the stolen item twice if I want to Steal again. This right here. This trait is amazing. If timed right you can use a stolen ability 4x in a row with two steals. Fought a guardian last night and with daze on steal and the stolen ability I was able to interrupt him 6x back to back lol.
I love it too. Stealing from a mesmer is great for boons and nobody who can switch boons to condis thinks about thieves having all of those boons haha. Plus two ranger healing trees? Using combo finishers with it or stacking stealth heals really has saved my kitten quite a few times.
I’m having no problem with my thief. More squishy? Yes, but It’ll all pan out. Just like it has since release. The forums are just full of hysteria and over-hype. You’ll see a marginal difference between posting QQ threads and positive threads, because let’s be honest… The forums are mostly where people go to complain in hopes that the devs will hear their (sometimes legitimate) problems – with a side of positivity.
Please, remove this thread too.
Yesterday, backstab was bugged to reveal the thief if they used it. This was something that a lot of PvPers were hoping would happen. Few questions
- If you played a D/P thief during this time, did the reveal feel fair?
- If you played against a D/P, did the reveal make the build feel more fair?
- Would you want this applied to all stealth attacks (Backstab, Surprise Shot, etc) if they are used (aka, hitting air = reveal)?
- Would you want this applied to all stealth attacks if blocks, blinds, evades and invulns caused you to be revealed, but not hitting nothing?
- Would you want this applied to all attacks that miss in stealth?
1. Yes, the reveal didn’t bother me; I don’t mindlessly swing
2. No, not really. It didn’t really change anything, bad players got screwed by it, good players were competent
3. When you say all stealth attacks, is this exclusively regarding Thieves? If so, No. Any class with stealth/invis mechanics should deal with this as well. Otherwise, what’s a thief? The clumsy guy that reveals themselves when they miss, while rangers, mesmers, etc. can miss all they want and stay hidden?
4. No
Making these changes isn’t going to alter a scrub’s view of a thief. They’ll still suck harder than a heavy duty vacuum cleaner, then they’ll come on here seemingly triggered by some sort of gaming PTSD and complain about more game mechanics.
I’m Loving it
……………O.o
The ditch the zerk amulet part is way too true. My life is easier with marauder now
It’s honestly not that big of a deal, still hasn’t changed my thief. Still easy to land a BS.
