Why Is Leveling Experience *So* Inconsistent?

So I got the game a few weeks ago and have been faffing around trying to settle on a character.

Now one thing I like about WoW, for all it’s failings, is that whatever class I want to level, the early experience is going to be pretty consistent. Difficult or easy, the classes are balanced in such a way that nothing is a horror to level early anymore and most dps specs require a similar amount of effort and time to level with.

GW2 on the other hand…well, I really would love to level my thief, but I’m so insanely squishy that I have to jump around like a grasshopper on yellowjackets to survive 2+ of even similar level mobs.
On the other hand, my guardian or Warrior can just kerplode enemies endlessly, even if he is a few levels below them.

Since the early game experience is really important (first impressions on new players and all that) and can be so vastly different depending on what you choose to play first, I really think that some attention should be given to the fairly long period of time between starting and getting fully traited out and skilled up.

Perhaps the armor/mitigation/healing differential between the classes could be smoothed out early (and diverge more sharply later), and key survive-ability traits unlocked sooner? This would be a simple matter of changing a few numbers around.

Thoughts?

EDIT: For clarity. Also, please read this before jumping in with “L2P”. This isn’t a matter of the game being too hard. It’s more about certain classes/builds relying on tools that are not unlocked until late, versus others who have a solid kit from the get-go.

IT’S NOT. let me tell you why. the classes are different. you can’t play a thief like a guardian or vice versa. if you play style is tank and spank don’t play a thief. for a thief to survive you must learn how to move simple as that.

I play many classes and have not found any do be more difficult to lvl then the other through same content.

you don’t want anyone to respond with L2P yet what I read is what you must do. the vast majority don’t post this issue because they have spent the time to learn there class. took me awhile to learn theif. I practiced how to use what was given to me to survive before I put my self in tough positions.

the argument would be better if you we’re talking about time it might take to lvl a class, or how long it takes to learn.

but sorry I just don’t agree

well depends on what where talking about.

so lets get into one thing here. been reading forums and I just can’t help but laugh at most post. I’m more specifically talking about the ones mentioning stuff on the BLT.
it’s astonishing how many go right to how much RL cash something costs. What? are you who choose to see this not know you don’t have to spend a dime? plz tell me I would like to know what goes on in the mind of one who thinks this.

A-Net has put in ways so you don’t have to spend a dime of RL cash. If you are so impatient and want everything right now, well then that costs money. It is part of any business. I’m afraid that this generation is just not educated properly. I don’t know what the issue is in reality but I hope it gets fixed.

back to my point. don’t complain something cost to much here and to much there of RL cash if there’s a free way to get something.

go look at other games that have cash shops. you will see no way to earn in game currency to buy what they sell. If they do its a long kitten road.

well that’s my rant been holding back. The harder I work for something the less I want to hear these things.

it’s built for casual long term players. this usually means it need to be simplified. the few need to have a game be difficult to play. the many do not.

3d space is not really an issue. yes you can make multiple maps of levels. but that only need if say its a hole or a stair case. if say you have tree ledges and something is under you simply state it’s under this thing here.

the hard part is getting the area. since its not just a simple corridor map and you can’t zoom out it would take a bit to do. also there is no in game map so finding markers has to be really well done.

this is of course my own opinion. would love to see one. might try my self but not sure if I have the time

The GW2 Macro Policy directly forbids binding multiple actions (jump & dodge) to a single key or button.

well that’s fine and all I just don’t see what A-nets issue is.
I understand for multiboxing and bot reasons.

but it’s a bit strict. good luck one handed players and such.

these special event currency items need to automatically be a collection item on top of that they need to add more the 1 stack for them.
maybe a max of 5 or something. or maybe bump up collection stack amounts.

like me I don’t have a lot of gold to buy gems to then buy slots. I’m very casual and don’t have any high lvl toons. but my bank and bags fill up quick. might have to turn one toon into a hoarder.

I’m in the same boat, except that I have already purchased all the bank slots available. I’m not even really hoarding items anymore, probably half of my bank is tokens, upgrade things (like crests), or other one time things (like all the stuff from wintersday/halloween). I hope they add more bank slots or increase the max items of certain things in the collections (like candy corn, C.C.s, etc).

never even thought of some of those things. plus all the skin collections only so much one can hold lol

I know give me a house that I can display my weapon slash armor collections so I can store them there

World 1 cages are meant to be a cake-walk. The problem comes with grinding and feeling the need to fight them 20 times a day. That’s a problem I hope to address next release. Also the cages in future worlds will have more interesting attack patterns that will require some level of strategy. Also I fully endorse finding secret spots where bosses can’t hit you. That’s part of classic platform game strategy.

say your at the boss you know you have collected all the baubles in the zone. you have no lives left and can’t make it to a shop to bye more lives or maybe you don’t want to spend those baubles like that. so if you die your going to need a continue coin so you don’t have to start from scratch.

I was originally on the side of having a counter. but after I found all of them I realized it was my own stupidity and bad treasure hunting that pushed me towards a counter. so I recant my want of a counter I prefer to find things the hard/fun way.

Why Do I mini-sprint in SAB?

That also happens in the world of Tyria. :P
When you are in combat, you move a little slower.
Once you get out of combat, you start running faster. The running becoming faster it’s like a little mini-sprint, because we have to percept the change of pace.

The same thing happens in SAB.

i thought you slow down cause you are in combat. this is to prevent an easy escape. which is not the same as here.

now as stated its 1/50 chests per toon. so say you have 5 running. 50 chests is roughly 7.5 runs per toon. so that’s 37.5 runs x 6 chests is 225 total chest before you might see 1.

I have a question. Will the vendor remain in the game even after the SAB is removed, or will do we need to spend our points before it is removed (or save them for next time)?

probably remain for a short time after. so spend what you need now and save for what you need later

I honestly think this is a person to person thing. it’s not the game but the way your brain reads the information. might be a way to train your self not to focus so hard on every movement.

that’s why I believe it does not effect me. I take in the whole screen instead of focusing on one spot. this is as I perceive it to be.

if I spin I get sick and dizzy if I see something spin I do not. unless I start focusing on what’s spinning and my eyes follow then its possible

don’t move until you hit the cap.

tip: jump on it when in the air slightly move to center yourself. then once your lines up, wait till just before you hit cap to do a long distance jump. you will look like your about to run off the cap but you will spring off.

also wait a couple jumps to get this close and high ones.

Hi Josh,

first of all kudos on a) making a super super awesome adventure box and b) responding to feedback on here like a boss.

Secondly I wanted to elaborate on the mushroom jump glitch that crazylegsmurphy described above. For me, if I stand straight on a mushroom and just keep bouncing up without doing anything else, every fourth or fifth bounce (I think) it’s like the game skips half a bounce and I start the animation in the wrong place (vertically). If that happens to be the moment you attempt your jump, it will of course screw you over.

The Moto’s Breath tree trunk of hell was so difficult (in reality it took us over two hours to get up) because of the combination of three difficult jumps to even get started, swamp water, glitchy mushroom bouncing and our nerves getting the better of us after a while. With any one of these four factors removed I think it would have been a nicer experience while still being a challenge.

Only my achievement OCD kept me going (and the fact that I really didn’t want to start over with collecting all zone 3 Baubles). I mean, at that point I really felt that the SAB can go die in a fire, and I resolved not to play it anymore for at least a full day, although that wore off really soon so of course I was back in there the next day.

Thank you also for the clarification about corner jumps; I’m a mixed keyboard/mouse player (never thought about it, but when walking around outside I exclusively use keyboard turns, in jumping puzzles I seem to subconsciously switch to mouse camera) and I am not keen on corner jumps at all. But I guess at least now I know what’s coming, so I can use the time we have before world 2 release to practice those bad boys.

By the way, here’s my suggestion for that one; how about putting one of those rooty trees on ground level somewhere in zone 2, so you can use that to practice the corner jumping without losing a life every time? It is world 1 after all (If there is one, I haven’t spotted it, at least not in zone 2.)

Keep up the good work, the SAB is amazing and I love it, no matter how frustrating.

I don’t find it glitchy just takes practice to know what to do. also take your time.
I have run SAB more times then I can count and had no problems but my own.

I’m not sure what to say to this. the idea of SAB is to be challenging. you should have looked at the 2 lives as a challenge to get what you wanted done.

I did a full run of world 1 no continues, no pots, no deaths cause I thought it was an achievement. nope I read that wrong but I felt so good that I was able to do it.

might be a glitch but ill tell you my own issue with zone 3.

I always missed the bauble under the leaf when doing the 9 bauble run.
those are the ones that disappear.

I’m kind of disappointed they cost gold as well, I don’t have a lvl 80 character yet so it’s a lot of gold for me.

give A-net 10$ for some gems and you can trade those for gold. that 10$ will help go towards more content like this

Why should they have to buy gold with real money just to enjoy the content that is otherwise free? Just because they are a new player? Yeah, no.

no one said they have to. it’s the quickest way.

also if you think you should get everything for free your wrong.

people work hard on this stuff and I bet they put a lot of free time into this(time they do t get payed for). I do the same at work to make my customers happy.

The sad part of the S.A.B. is that it made me realize I was bored. I enjoyed the box somewhat, and when I was finished with the achievements, went back to WvW where I spend most of my time anyway. It’s just not the same.
Sure, still get in 1v1’s and 1v2’s (both ways), ride the zerg and run supply building siege. Spent way too many hours at WC and LL Friday night, stayed up about 4 hours past my normal bedtime, and it was fun. I think part of it is, I think back to how much fun I had playing all the games “referenced (used loosely)” in the SAB, and despite all of the modern programming, most seem to constantly miss the mark.
I must be getting old. I think Post SAB, I’m gonna go outside.

lol outside sounds good. still cold and snowy here so I have an excuse.
I also felt like getting my hands on some Mario/Zelda/mega man. But alas I don’t have anyway to play it as I never kept my collection.

when your young and dumb you give away anything for very little.

made a new asura named Lynk Twylight just to Honor SAB. he’s going to be rocking that gear.

I’m just curious about this.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the SAB since it came out. Not much time in the PvE or PvP world.

I don’t understand why it costs money to get a skin with the baubles. I understand that one gold is not really much, and wont be hard for many players to get, but in the past events like this never required you to spend gold with your tokens (IE, the socks from the presents), even though you get money for doing those dungeons (IE the winter event, you got a chest at the end that gave you items to sell).

In SAB, you don’t get any items other than the baubles and a rare chance at a skin you can sell on the TP (which I have not gotten yet).

So why does it cost gold? You are not guaranteed any type of money when you do the dungeon, so why would the reward for doing these dungeons cost gold?!

IMO it’s to warrant the need to play the regular game as well.

How those who do not want this content to be permanent, usually have the excuse it will get stale, boring, or loose its uniqueness. GW2 in of itself is just rinse and repeat of the same thing. What makes SAB different?

Some think of it as seasonal. Yet its not Halloween with its orange and black scare candy. Its not Christmas with red green jolly jumpers. So i don’t understand this thought. You could say maybe its a spring thing but really we do not buy gifts or go door to door for candy. Don’t try to shoe horn SAB into Easter either. So help me understand what seasonal significance SAB has.

They’re making a game inside of a game. Its not just a simple jump puzzle map or themed event. Its a huge work of art, love and dedication to memories of the past. You can not just have something like this go away.

I’m okay with it going away and coming back as worlds are added. But when its fully complete i expect to play it any time i feel with no time limit. I don’t want to have to rush through in one month it does not give enough time to take it all in.
