I completely agree with you OP.

I would personally describe this game as utterly horrible, boring, shallow, unimaginative, restricting, lackluster, annoying and disappointing EVER. The irony is that it had it’s potential, hence I bought it when I did. But obviously it has FAIL written all over it in huge, glowing letters for some reason.

I stop by occasionally to visit the forums to see if the much required miracle has happened to steer GW2 away from the path of self-destruction, but who am I kidding? I never actually expect that to happen.

Just stay away from this “fun game”.

Pretty much nothing. After being repeatedly disappointed ever since the first time I got my hands on this game, I came to expect nothing positive at all from it.

I find it boring, shallow… Just opposite of fun. There is a slight, slight chance I’ll be pleasantly surprised many, many patches from now, but I highly doubt that.

I went Planetside 2 and never logged back in, not even once. I visit the forums whenever I’m bored and can’t think of anything else to do to see what’s going on. But I might stop doing even that, because it appears that even thinking/talking about GW2 bores me as well.

It’s just that bad.

This exact same “observation”, in all its infinite variations, was put forth by a lot (A LOT) of people on SW:ToR forums, less than a year ago.

I guess we all know how that turned out.

On any MMO forum. I see this on the WoW forums as well, and that game is far from “dying”.

I really don’t judge the state of any game by its forums anymore.

Exactly, WoW is far from dying. GW2 is not very far from that, on the other hand. You do the math.

BUT! If the devs play it right, you get the following result:

non subscription “WoW” >>>>>> original WoW with subscription

The company makes a fortune, AND you have satisfied customers. It’s a win-win situation.

So wait – running a dungeon for 1001 times, getting tokens each run until you collect enough so you can buy a piece of armor WAS REVOLUTIONARY, UNIQUE and NOT A GRIND?

I’m… Speechless…

This is a good change indeed. WoW did so many things right, and this was one of them. Or it wouldn’t have 14 million subscribers at one point. So many years down the road, it’s still the most played MMORPG. Case closed. If YOU don’t like it, well that’s YOUR problem.

Sure it’s a grind. It’s a grind with logical progression, with tangible goals and guarantees that the work you put in will give you the items you want.

No, this isn’t a good change. If WoW does so many things right, go play WoW. Stop trying to turn every other MMO out there into WoW.

It IS a good change. It adds a suspense factor to the game play and makes things more interesting. “Logical progression”, as you call it, just bored so many people to death that the ANet guys had to change/tweak their initial system. And it’s a good thing they collect data and respond to it accordingly, there might still be hope for this game (if they continue to do so).

Now, I WOULD go play WoW but I don’t want to spend the cash on it’s money subscription. If GW2 manages to surpass, or at least reach the WoW heights you can bet your butt it will soon have 15-16 million ACTIVE players (if WoW managed to have 14 million with the monthly sub).

…why I loved the crafting in WoW and I was ready to do whatever it took to max different professions on all my characters, but I absolutely hate crafting in GW2 and couldn’t bother leveling it past lvl147/151.

Because, honestly, I have no clue why that is. Probably PARTLY I feel that way because I believe crafting offers little variety in item looks and serves no purpose. But I’m completely clueless for the rest of the reasons why.

Any ideas?

Edit: oh, I remembered another thing – I detest shared nodes for trees/ore/plants. Yuck!

The nodes that actually matter (orichalcum, orrian sapling and omnomnom berries) or so scarce that sharing is pretty much essential. To be honest, the map isn’t big enough to have enough nodes to justify competitive-farming.

Perhaps if each type of gathering (Mining, Harvesting, Woodwork) were a crafting profession itself (such as Tailoring or Armorsmith), it might make the TP market more interesting.

I agree with your post. But that’s still a problem – the fact that the nodes are shared, no matter what the reason behind it is. Maps are not large enough – that’s true. But the shared nodes create a feeling that there is no competition between players, trivializes gathering itself, and it further ruins my joy of gathering/crafting in a way I can’t seem to express in words.

Bottom line is – I really don’t like it at all.

Awesome news. Now just tell me one last thing:

Does the weapon drop for the whole group so we roll/whatever for it, or does the weapon drop for me/whoever only?

Personally I’m in favor for the first system (like in WoW) because it adds additional suspense if you compete over an item with a fellow GW2-er. Also, you feel way more rewarded/satisfaction if you do receive it.

Yeah, excuse me, but don’t call me a troll. Consider yourself as one if you like. If the game wasn’t in any sort of trouble, and if the direction they initially took was FINE, they wouldn’t be changing it later on (right now). There is, however, still much work to be done.

Incredible concept, and likely easier than you think as an alternative server type.

But a pipe dream all the same. The lead designer of GW2 is WoW’s biggest fan, you’d have to hand him a mop and bucket and order him to clean up this current mess.

How is GW2 even remotely similar to WoW, please, explain? If it was I’d be all over it! WoW with no monthly sub? Oh, please, yes.

GW2 is nothing like it.

80 levels, stat grind, gated content throughout, carrots over access, no horizontal progress… all these things at the core of both games, fannum, I’m looking at you.

It’s like saying “BF3 uses a first person view, has guns, uses ammo, you shoot stuff. It’s the same as Duke Nukem 3D”.

Yes, it has levels, it has carrots (kinda), it has grind… But it’s NOTHING like WoW. While WoW did MOST of these things well, GW2 did them horribly, and I mean horribly.

No, GW2 is nothing like WoW. These two games are completely different categories.

I actually was sitting around thinking about this. They obviously made GW2 to cater to WoW players, or standard MMO players, in general. The entire concept behind the first game is just plain gone. PvP focus, the skill system, the method of balancing, everything. There’s nothing similar about the two games at all other than the setting. GW2 probably should have been called something like “Guild Wars: Whatever,” as it’s definitely not the second game in the series.

I’d be interested in seeing some sort of PvP-only side game built using this engine, and preferably handled by different people, as I have no faith in whoever is in charge of this batch. Most preferably, I’d like to see a different company entirely make a very similar game, as ANet was already kind of crazy in the GW1 days, got nuts near the end, and is obviously now completely mad.

I’m sorry, but GW2 wasn’t made to cater to WoW players. If it was I’d be happy. Just to be clear, WoW >>>>>>>>>> GW2 and they cannot be compared. Having said that, I like GW1 as well. GW2 falls short when compared to both games and has no similarities with either. GW2 is just bad, that is all, don’t compare it with WoW no longer, please.

Everything is dead in this game. Anything I tried to do while I was still playing seemed pointless.

- Guilds mean nothing, community means nothing. I felt detached from the rest of the players.

- Dungeons mean nothing. They don’t provide a real challenge, they provide no interesting mechanics nor satisfying rewards. Basically “nothing happens” when you do complete them. They are awkward and feel incomplete.

- Dynamic events mean nothing. They just repeat over and over again. And just the same as the dungeons, they provide no challenge due to zergs, no interesting mechanics and no satisfying rewards. This game is just too shallow.

- Hearts mean nothing. You do these tedious tasks, and for what?

- WvWvW means nothing. No real impact on anything, no satisfying rewards. Everyone is anonymous, and the zergs really kill all the potential fun one could have.

- sPvP/tPvP means nothing. No matchmaking, no satisfying rewards, the downed state, no variety in builds, skills, maps, game modes.

- Core game dynamics are off. Like I said for sPvP/tPvP there are no variety in builds and skills, classes don’t feel unique enough, you are very limited in what you can do, everything is too simplified and shallow.

- Crafting means nothing. It is also awkward and no fun at all, offers no variety.

- TP means nothing. Awkward as hell.

Way to fix some of it: give us open world PvP. Merge WvWvW and the PvE environment, lose the “green invader” crap and show our real names, come up with gear and title progression system and make guilds mean something in this game.

Im not speaking against the idea, Im just saying it wont happen. Ganking has nothing to do with it, there is no money in it. You can keep wanting all you want, until you give a reason that pays, nobody will care.

You are talking entire code reversal and changes, world changes, lore changes, spell and weapon changes..all for what? 1-3 servers at best? with like…1k people? yeah…thats going to sell to the investors.

This I say also, except I say ganking has everything to do with it. Because of ganking people get bullied out of these servers. Not enough people enjoy being killed every minute by a level 80 top clan character being bored. So… not popular enough and so no return of investment and if they would implement such a thing on existing servers they will loose 80% of their population. GW1 didn’t have this mix either and sometimes it seems people really ended up in the wrong place; hating everything that makes guild wars guild wars.

Yes, that’s why EVE Online failed. Right? It’s wonderful how you apply your own preferences as a general rule.

Any argument I could make against open world PvP has probably been said, not going to read 117+ posts. Besides, this game was never designed with that in mind, it would completely destroy the PvE & WvW mechanics of the game.

Does PvE/WvW “mechanics” really need additional destruction? Can they be degraded even further? I mean, they suck so bad at the moment it’s hard to believe they can be any worse.

To DAVIDGX,

I don’t know what hole you play in but I am concerned as to why you think inspecting a player to see gear (instead of asking them to link you their gear, getting trolled or bashed for asking or possibly speaking to an afk player) would be abused. I CANNOT WAIT to abuse the INSPECT OPTION! I am going to inspect the kitten out of everyone!

/follow? Botting happens regardless. It will be handled the same way current botters are and without hitting mobs, you gain nothing. You can already go and sit down in a defensive event to get points. Your issue with /follow is dumb.

Dueling? DUELING. He didn’t ask for an SPVP tournament for players who want to 1v1. He asked for a dueling option. Meaning, I come up to you, right click your name and hit duel. If you accept it, I would crush you and the duel would then be over. They don’t balance around duels, just like you could always hit **********no**********.

Some of the suggestions on these forums are otherwordly and amazing. Some of them are kitten poor. The same goes for the responses by what seems to be trolls or players who speak without logic/intelligence.

Please, be gentle with the fragile GW2 community. They are so very sensitive and emotional about anything and everything, so many things insult them and so many things they find abusing. GW2 is like a rehab-program for emotionally endangered folks.

What’s the development process for then?

I’ve written posts after posts after posts about what I believe is flawed and what needs to be done about it, the best I could. Many other people have done the same thing.

This, right here, is just the result of ANet’s “efforts” that’s reflected through my interests and feelings. They did nothing significant about the game-play but fix various bugs, nor did they give any heads up about their intentions – which leads me to a conclusion that they HAVE no intentions to do anything about all the complaints.

And wow – give them a chance to iron out the bugs? The game has been in development for how long? And it’s been released for how long? So it should take them a whole year to just iron the bugs out!?

And in the following 3-5 years they might change their flawed game mechanics?? It’s completely irrational to expect that kind of patience from a customer. It’s not a game my parents or children made, that I’m so set to succeed. Who cares, I’ll move on to a next game.

It’s not negativity on MY behalf. It’s all the things they did wrong, and are still doing. I didn’t show up here swinging my fists and swearing/insulting, I just said that this game lost my attention and I happily showed up here to let them know that, because I think it’s just lame to let customers down like that.

Posting something like this on the forums is hardly constructive, more insulting.

ANet have made an outstanding game; yes, with all new games comes bugs and fine tuning, but i am sure in the long run will be as successful as GW1 or even more.

It’s constructive all right! If a ship is sinking, it’s a good thing to raise the question WHY and to ask for the repairs. What doesn’t help is to be “polite” and let the ship go down.

I was not referring to bugs – besides the bugs, the very game core is flawed. And I’m not insulting anything or anyone, I said the truth – how I see it.

i’m really glad others are of the opinion that this “story” is laughable. i’m the first to admit i’m a lit snob (whoever said diablo three made guild wars sound like tolstoy, if that was a joke, it wasn’t funny :/). but i’m also a game snob, and find that the gameplay of guild wars is deep and complicated in interesting ways. i’m sure there are those who will disagree. i like the tactical decisions, i like that they feel like they matter.
and this is exactly why the story is utterly miserable. none of your choices matter. you make lots of them, but ultimately, the only real choice is “what order armor do i want the option of passing up later on?” (not entirely fair, they do offer some nice skins). but in all honesty, the only interesting thing about the story is how much of it there is, and the only way to even appreciate this is to play an unbelievable number of characters through repetitious early stages. the writing itself is sophomoric at best and fan fiction calibre at worst. the story itself is worse than formulaic, it is boring.

but what infuriates me above all is the way it so blatantly betrays its own supposed themes and morals. for example, in a story centered primarily around racial tensions, a large chunk of lore and storyplay involved essentially “civilizing” “tribal” races (who you are just as often exterminating mindlessly). skritt, quaggan, and the like (with the possible tengu/kodan exception) are treated as entirely inferior beings. as a socialist, i was quite frankly disturbed to see my main racial foe as a norn was a miners’ collective of dredge headquartered in “moleningrad.”

it’s obvious that the story is “bad,” as even those trying to defend it seem to be mainly comparing it to even crappier game plots (or for some bizarre reason, quality literature). let’s explore exactly why this plot is pissing off so many people (voice acting aside).

It’s pissing me off because it’s made for either really really naive people or children under the age of 10 – and I mean this literally, because I believe they are the only ones that can be “awed” by the plot. I have a little sister who is 12 and trust me, she and her friends believe that the story “blows”. Let’s face it, even the kids have the chance to watch mature movies/content on the TV and Internet nowadays, thus their criteria grows further up. What can be said about the actual matures then??

It’s not just the story – it’s most of the game/encounter mechanics as well, it’s just that I didn’t mention them here because it’s the Personal Story forum section. But yes, it seems that the ANet decided to go “naive”, probably due to popularity reasons. Or at least they believed that the grown ups wouldn’t mind their lack of imagination, creation, depth or complexity, and that they’ll attract the youngsters as well.

Win-win, right? Wrong.
